Aldi Grocery Store recently announced the closure of its store, which was located at 821 W. 115th and Halsted. Ronnie Moseley, 21st Ward Alderman, said he reached out to Aldi to find out the status of the location, given the fact that the Walgreen’s location across the street closed in 2023. He said he was told that the Aldi would be remodeled.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW EV CHARGING STATIONS

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today the second official notice of funding opportunity through the Illinois National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, which will provide up to approximately $24 million for the construction of charging stations across the state. The second funding opportunity aims to make approximately 20 awards, building upon the 37 awards from the first NEVI funding opportunity announced by IDOT in September and aligning with Gov. JB Pritzker’s goal to have 1 million electric vehicles on Illinois roads by 2030.

“Illinois is leading the electric vehicle revolution, and my administration continues to build on our momentum by investing in EV charging infrastructure across our state,” said Gov. Pritzker. “Through our Illinois NEVI Program, this second funding opportunity will support the construction of charging stations to provide convenient access to sustainable transportation for all Illinoisans. I highly encourage all eligible entities to apply to this funding opportunity.”

Applications for funding must be submitted by Dec. 17 at 11:59 p.m. All application materials can be found on IDOT’s website at idot.click/ drive-electric. Awards are anticipated to be announced in early 2025.

Selected locations will have at least four fast-charging ports, each of which can fully charge a typical EV in less than 30 minutes. When complete, these projects will provide access to fast charging at least every 50 miles along all Illinois interstates.

“Under the leadership of Gov. Pritzker, IDOT is committed to creating and supporting safe, reliable options for how people wish to travel,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “The funding made available via our federal partners will help sustain a charging infrastructure that benefits drivers in communities large and small, while also providing economic opportunity by drawing travelers and generating revenue for local businesses.”

PRAIRIE STATE BOARD CHAIR NAMED

GLENWOOD VILLAGE CLERK

Longtime community organizer and youth leader fills vacant role

A community organizer and decades-long Southland resident was recently sworn in as the new Village Clerk in Glenwood.

Camiella Williams began her new role after Mayor Ronald J. Gardiner appointed her to the position, which had been vacant since Sandra Washington stepped down in the summer.

Williams works as a mentor for GoodKidsMadCity, a Chicago-based anti-violence organization. She also serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Prairie State College and is a volunteer for U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly’s violence prevention task force.

As Clerk, Williams is responsible for maintaining village records, including village board documents, while also serving as a local election official and registrar for voters. She is also responsible for village licensing and compliance with state and federal regulations. The 37-year-old is a graduate of Governors State University who lives in Glenwood’s Forest neighborhood and is a longtime supporter of Glenwood Hawks basketball.

“Glenwood is my home and I want to invest not just my tax dollars, but my time and work together to build a better community,” said Williams, a mother of two who has one son at Prairie State and another at Hickory Bend Elementary. “I’m looking forward to getting more involved with community events, summer programs, job creation for our young people and just building a better community.”

She credits Rev. Michael Pfleger, Sen. Jackie Collins, Cook County Commissioner Monica Gordon and Rep. Kelly as mentors who have helped her gain experience in community organizing, intergovernmental relations and grant writing. She helped advocate for the Cook County Assault Weapons Ban before expanding to work with the Blair Holt Memorial Foundation and Brady United, among other anti-violence efforts.

21st Ward Alderman Speaks Out On Recent Store

Continued from page 1

He said he didn’t hear anything else from them until Nov. 7th, when Aldi called to tell him that they decided to close the 115th and Halsted location. He said he was shocked by the decision.

“These are essential parts of our community, you need somewhere to go to get your odds and ends, and you need somewhere to get groceries to put food on the table,” Moseley said.

Moseley said there is not another grocery store in the West Pullman area, from 115th and goes all the way to 127th, from Indiana on the east, to Ashland on the west end.

“It’s the impact of our store. The only grocery store in all of West Pullman that is servicing seniors and those who are doing the best they can with their budget, I feel there was no consideration for them,” he said.

In a statement sent to the Citizen Newspaper Group by The Zeno Group, which represents Aldi, Aldi’s spokesperson wrote in an email: “ALDI will continue to proudly serve the Chicago metropolitan area at our more than 150 stores, including more than 30 within the city , as well as our distribution center and headquarters in Batavia, Illinois. ALDI employs nearly 6,000 people in the area while offering highly competitive pay and benefits. The recent closures are unique situations and not indicative of any larger trends. In fact, we recently announced our intention to hire more than 13,000 associates as we embark on our most ambitious growth plans yet, aiming to open 800 new stores by the end of 2028.

forward to seeing them in nearby stores soon.”

The statement also noted that it closed its Lincoln Park location at 1836 N. Clybourn on Oct.13th.

Moseley said that Aldi told him that the employees from the closed location would be transferred to other stores and that his constituents could shop at other Aldi locations that are within a 15-minute drive from the closed store.

“I said, driving? The majority of the customers here are walking, taking the bus. The representative said we have a partnership with Instacart and DoorDash, to which I responded is it free, is there a voucher or a coupon code? And, she said no,” he said.

“I said, driving? The majority of the customers here are walking, taking the bus. The representative said we have a partnership with Instacart and DoorDash, to which I responded is it free, is there a voucher or a coupon code? And, she said no,” he said.

Moseley said the assumption that people who shopped at the store could drive to another location or not know the additional impact of fees from using DoorDash or Instacart shows that they didn’t know their customers, who were very loyal to the brand. He said the whole thing is disrespectful to not take the time to get to know their customers, as well as the lack of notice to those same customers about the store closing.

Moseley said the representative from Aldi told him the store was seeing declining performance and low pedestrian traffic. He said he responded by telling the representative about the housing development projects that are slated for the community, some right across the street.

Moseley said his constituents told him they feel hopeless in the wake of the Aldi and Walgreen’s departure. He said although it might seem hopeless there are so many people working to ensure the 21st Ward thrives. There are talks to bring an ‘urgent care’ and pharmacy to the closed Walgreen’s location. In the mall where the Aldi closed, there are talks to put a sit-down restaurant there.

We strive to create an environment where our employees can thrive. We are proud to say all impacted employees have been offered a transfer to a store of their choice and no jobs will be lost.

Customers can conveniently shop at one of our many nearby stores, through curbside pickup or have groceries delivered to their door via Instacart and DoorDash: 12215 Western Ave., Blue Island, IL 60406; 13085 S. Ashland Ave., Calumet Park, IL 60827; and 8500 S. Holland Rd., Chicago, IL 60620.

We thank the community for their years of loyalty and look

Moseley said he has been in conversation with the Mayor’s Office and World Business Chicago. He said because Aldi owns the property, there has to be a joint Request For Proposals with the city for the location, so it will not just sit vacant, like other locations that the chain has closed.

“So many of our residents are hurt and angry and I get it, because I was hurt and angry and still am, and this lack of communication doesn’t help. My hope is that we get back to the table with Aldi and we figure out a path forward together,” he said.

Chicago Urban League Stands on Business Raising $4 Million at 63rd Annual Golden Fellowship Dinner

CHICAGO – More than 2,300 people gathered at the Skyline Ballroom at McCormick Place on Saturday, November 9, for the Chicago Urban League’s 63rd annual Golden Fellowship Dinner (GFD). The record number of attendees included federal, state, county and local elected officials, alongside some of the city’s top corporate leaders, human rights advocates, philanthropists, and clergy.

This year’s gala theme, “Standing on Business in the Fight for Equity,” helped drive efforts by Chicago Urban League board members, sponsors, and a host of dedicated volunteers to raise more than $4 million in support of the organization’s programs and services. The event’s top sponsor was NBA star and Chicago native Anthony Davis. This year’s gala chair was Toi Salter, President of Salter Financial Management, who is credited with bringing in multiple new supporters for the event.

“To all of our partners and sponsors, thank you for providing the fuel for the work we do,” CUL President and CEO Karen Freeman-Wilson told the crowd. “The presence of each and every one of you, as supporters of justice and equity, makes us even more determined to stand on business in the fight for equity.”

Funds raised through the gala are vital in supporting the daily work of the League with more than 15,000 Chicago residents serviced each year. The organization helps people find jobs and establish careers, become homeowners, enhance their educational experiences, strengthen their leadership skills, and grow their businesses. Succeeding and doing this work each year is the League’s commitment to the community.

In addressing attendees about why she agreed to chair this year’s gala, Salter said, “We are each stakeholders in this community, and as such, the onus is upon us to make sure that organizations such as the Chicago Urban League—a 100-yearold institution—not only thrives but survives.”

Grammy Award winner and Golden Globe-nominated actress and singer Fantasia took the stage as the evening’s performer with an energetic set that had gala goers dancing in the aisles.

Longtime nonprofit executive and community leader Dr. Carol L. Adams and Chicago State University President Zaldwaynaka “Z” Scott were also recognized for their vast accom-

This Giving Tuesday & Holiday Season, take the pledge to support families facing Alzheimer’s

The Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter invites you to make a difference this holiday season by participating in #GivingTuesday on Tuesday, December 3. This global day of generosity is an opportunity to raise vital funds and awareness to support the fight against Alzheimer’s and all other dementias.

The African American Heritage Water Trail is a powerful example of collaboration, community, and partnerships coming together to bring history to life and create new opportunities for education and recreation. This project highlights the rich legacy of African American history along the Little Calumet River, connecting significant sites along the Underground Railroad with modern-day stories of resilience, resistance, and activism.

The trail represents a collective effort to preserve and share local history through outdoor engagement. This initiative reflects a shared commitment to cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, and fostering connections between communities, nature, and history.

“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our partners for their contributions to the narratives, unwavering support, courage, and intelligence, all which have been instrumental in connecting families and children to the African American Heritage Water Trail,” said Openlands Regional Water Trails Manager, Lillian Holden, who attended the event. “This journey would not have been possible without your dedication.”

As the season of giving unfolds, the Association encourages everyone to honor those impacted by dementia and join efforts to create a future free from this devastating disease. Contributions made before December 31, 2024, will help the organization reach its annual fundraising goal and continue its critical mission.

Gov. Pritzker Joins U.S. EPA to Announce Clean Energy and Pollution Reduction Grants for Illinois

Climate Pollution Reduction Grant Program and Clean Ports Program propel Illinois towards a

clean energy future

CHICAGO - Governor JB Pritzker joined representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Illinois EPA Director James Jennings to celebrate funding for Illinois provided by U.S. EPA through the Inflation Reduction Act. The first grant, previously announced in July, was funded through the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) implementation program, totaling $430 million.

Illinois was also selected to receive two awards totaling $95 million through EPA’s Clean Ports Program, which was announced by EPA in late October.

“This unprecedented funding from the Biden-Harris administration will help build a greener, cleaner, healthier future for Illinois residents,” said EPA Region 5 Administrator Debra Shore. “EPA congratulates Gov. Pritzker for his leadership and innovative plans to fight climate change in Illinois and

power the state’s economy through zero-emission technologies and resources.”

The CPRG program is providing funding to implement projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Nearly 300 applications were submitted by entities nationwide for general CPRG implementation competition totaling nearly $33 billion in funding requests. U.S. EPA awarded 25 grants totaling $4.3 billion, with Illinois being the third largest award. This is the second phase of CPRG funding, and Illinois was initially awarded $3M for planning through CPRG Phase I in the summer of 2023.

U.S. EPA’s Clean Ports Program will support the deployment of zero-emission vehicles and infrastructure at water ports across Illinois. The program will also fund planning activities to build the

Get Your House In Order

Add A Finance Conversation To Your Holiday Gathering This Year Might Be Wise

We are in the Holiday Season of the year, stretching from Thanksgiving through the New Year. It is during this time of year that families are most likely to come together for events that include food, folks, and fun. This year I suggest that you add another “F” to the list – family finances, a too often forgotten area of family functions.

Too many Black families do not want to engage in conversations relating to the inevitable, aging and death. However, these are conversations that we should be having. Black families that do not plan for these life events are more likely to lose, unnecessarily, valuable family assets. Untold wealth is lost by Black families, due to our lack of planning for the inevitable.

In this Holiday Season of Thanksgiving, give thanks for all your blessings and express your good stewardship as scripture advises in Proverbs 13:22, create generational wealth.

May you and yours give thanks for the many blessings both big and small that you have experienced; Remember that it is your attitude of gratitude from which your blessings continue to flow. So, in all things be thankful, as Paul advised us in Thessalonians 5:18.

Have a blessed and happy Thanksgiving.

Bye for now, Bren

capacity of ports to transition to zero-emission operations over time. Illinois was selected for two grants through the program, a $92 million deployment award for zero-emission technology deployment, and a $3 million award for climate and air quality planning. In April, the Illinois EPA solicited projects through a competitive Call for Partners. Through that solicitation, the Illinois EPA partnered with the Illinois International Port District (IIPD), the Kaskaskia Regional Port District, the Rock Island County Metropolitan Mass Transit District (MetroLINK), the Shawneetown Regional Port District, and the Upper Mississippi River International Port District for the deployment grant. This $92 million zero-emission technology deployment award will fund zero-emission locomotives, drayage trucks, and other freight-handling equipment such as skid steers and forklifts, as well as electric vehicle chargers, hydrogen dispensers, solar power, and on-site battery storage.

“I’m thrilled that Illinois continues to benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act with this federal funding through EPA’s Clean Ports Program and Climate Pollution Reduction Grant,” said U.S. Senator Dick Durbin. “All Illinoisans deserve

clean air to breathe and clean water to drink, and these initiatives make that a reality for our communities that have long been overburdened by industrial pollution. With these significant investments, we will help protect the planet for the next generation by investing in climate-smart agriculture and decarbonization, reduce air pollution, and facilitate Illinois’ goal to reach 100% carbon-free power by 2045.”

In addition to funding freight-handling equipment, the zero-emission technology deployment grant will support the purchase of a battery-electric passenger ferry in the Quad Cities to replace a diesel-powered ferry currently operated by MetroLINK.

The planning grant will cover several port districts: Illinois Waterway Ports Commission (includes five port districts), the Mid America Intermodal Authority Port District, and the Upper Mississippi River International Port District.

Prior to the Clean Ports and CPRG selections, Illinois was already recognized as a national leader on climate following the implementation of the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, which puts the state’s power sector on the path to decarbonization.

‘Champions for Financial Legacy’ Program for HBCUs Launches

NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- The Shawn Carter Foundation, with generous support from Toyota Motor North America, is proud to introduce Champions for Financial Legacy (CFFL), a comprehensive financial education initiative designed to empower students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and surrounding communities.

Developed in collaboration with The Coalition for Equity and Opportunity at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, CFFL is modeled after Professor Keith Weigelt’s accredited curriculum at the Wharton School and Bridges to Wealth, a financial education and wealth-building program that Dr. Weigelt has offered to the Shawn Carter Foundation community of scholars and families since 2017.

CFFL is the latest initiative resulting from the ongoing collaboration between the Shawn Carter Foundation (SCF) and Toyota Motor North America, a long-time supporter of SCF’s annual HBCU Bus Tour. With Toyota’s generous support of CFFL, the vision to expand the program to HBCU students and local communities is made possible.

“We are excited to see our partnership with the Shawn Carter Foundation evolve to include this innovative initiative,” said Monica Womack, general manager, D+I and community engagement, Toyota. “One that not only provides resources to HBCU students but also reaches the heart of the community, through advocacy for financial literacy.”

CFFL aims to reduce the growing wealth gap by equipping students with the financial knowledge and skills needed for economic success and social mobility. Topics include budgeting, market risks and returns, mutual funds, credit scores, stock markets, and more. By fostering financial fluency and community engagement, the program seeks to change the trajectory of intergenerational wealth and build a more equitable future.

Recognizing the persistent disparities in access to resources and opportunities for Black women entrepreneurs, Southern Black Girls is taking a bold step to address this gap. The Dream Investment Program will equip participants with the tools and knowledge necessary to build sustainable and thriving businesses.

“It was a natural next step to partner with the Southern Black Girls on the launching the Dream Investment Program. We are not only providing financial resources, but also fostering a community of support and mentorship, which we know is essential to strengthening the ecosystem,” adds Kim Addie, Vice President of Strategy & Impact for Kindred Futures. “We believe in the power of Black girls and women entrepreneurs to transform their communities and drive economic growth.”

Rising above reports confirming that Black women and girls receive less than one percent of the $4.8 billion in philanthropic investments in the South, and recent data confirming that Black women and girls receive only 0.5% of $66.9 billion from foundations, totaling just $5.48 per woman and girl of color in the United States, the Southern Black Girls have made it their mission to raise $100 million over the next decade to financially empower the goals of Black girls and women. To date, they have already awarded $10.2M to 250 Black women-led organizations through the Black Girls Dream Fund and empowered 800 girls with

Established in 2017, Southern Black Girls has become a disruptor in grant-making and is positioned as a catalyst to fundraise and provide greater resources toward underfunded organizations that, intentionally, support and empower Black girls and women in the south. The collective leads alongside a diverse array of grassroots and advocacy partners who are dedicated to the mission and actively engaging in this work across the region. “Every day at the Shawn Carter Foundation, we dedicate ourselves to uplifting students and communities that are underserved,” said Dr. Gloria Carter, Shawn Carter Foundation CEO and Co-Founder. “To launch a financial education program that will reach more students and communities, along with dedicated partners like Toyota and the Wharton School of Business, is a vision we are finally seeing come to fruition. We are so excited to see the incredible impact of CFFL unfold and look forward to its growth.”

“One way to strengthen the resiliency of middle-class households is to increase their ability to generate wealth,” said Dr. Keith Weigelt, Marks-Darivoff Family Professor of Strategy at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and Founder of Bridges to Wealth. “I thank both the Shawn Carter Foundation and Toyota for their foresight in addressing a long-neglected social disparity.”

The curriculum includes real-world applications and service-learning components, allowing students to apply their financial knowledge in community settings, thereby expanding the ecosystem of wealth-building and fostering local development.

“The Wharton Coalition for Equity and Opportunity (CEO) is pleased to partner with the Shawn Carter Foundation and Toyota in launching the financial legacy program with several HBCUs. This partnership will help us remain committed to closing the wealth gap through an evidence-based approach,” said Dr. Fareeda Griffith, CEO managing director.

The inaugural CFFL program will be implemented in Spring 2025 at Lincoln University, Norfolk State University, and Virginia State University, with plans to expand to other HBCUs. University-appointed faculty from each school will receive free professional development training, and trained student ambassadors will amplify the Champions for Financial Legacy course offerings on their respective campuses for enrollment.

(StatePoint) Every student deserves a fair shot. Fortunately, opportunities exist to help people with disabilities pursue the education and training they need to succeed in their chosen career path.

Since 2017, Wells Fargo has partnered with Scholarship America to award 253 renewable scholarships to students with disabilities.

Recently renamed “The Stacey Milbern Scholarship” after the pioneering activist, the scholarships open doors to new opportunities and foster greater accessibility for all.

Stacey Milbern was a Korean American activist who helped create the disability justice movement and advocated for fair treatment of all disabled people. Born with congenital muscular dystrophy, a genetic degenerative disease, Milbern eventually became reliant on a scooter, a tracheostomy tube and a ventilator. Despite living with challenges, she found the strength to dedicate herself to disability justice from a young age. While she was still a student, she worked to

have disability history added to the school curriculum and raised awareness of disability rights through her blog and other outreach efforts. In adulthood, she founded the Disability Justice Culture Club, helped organize protests, and worked to meet the needs of disabled and unhoused people during the early days of the pandemic. She also brought her unique perspective to corporate America, serving as Wells Fargo’s accommodations management consultant, and was an impact producer for the Netflix documentary “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution,” which centers on the lives and voices of disabled Americans. In 2025, Stacey’s legacy will be celebrated by the U.S. Mint along with Ida B. Wells, Dr. Vera Rubin, and other honorees as part of the American Women Quarters Program.

“Milbern passed away in 2020, but her achievements are honored in many ways, including in the Wells Fargo Stacey

Milbern Scholarship. Wells Fargo was honored to receive an Irving Innovation Award from Scholarship America for its decision to rename our scholarship after her, and it serves as a testament to her legacy in advancing accessibility to education for students with disabilities,” says Andrew Holbrook, chief accessibility officer for Diverse Segments, Representation and Inclusion at Wells Fargo. This year, the program will award renewable scholarships of up to $2,500 for fulltime students and renewable scholarships of up to $1,250 for part-time students who plan to enroll at an accredited two- or four-year col-

lege or university in the United States for the upcoming academic year. For more information about the scholarship and to register to be notified when it is available in February 2025, visit scholarshipamerica.org. For more information about paying for college, visit collegesteps.wf.com.

“At a time when a college degree in the United States has never been more expensive, it is essential to create more pathways to success for students of all backgrounds,” says Holbrook.
