HARPER TO CONTINUE ADVOCATING FOR HAIR DIVERSITY

CHICAGO - State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, is working to improve access to culturally appropriate and respectful haircare with new legislation that will train hairdressers to better tend to the needs of people of diverse cultures and backgrounds.

“When someone goes to the barbershop or beauty salon, they want to leave feeling confident,” Harper said. “An essential part of that is hairdressers being aware of different hair textures response to products, cutting routines, treatments, and color mixtures.”

Harper recently introduced House Bill 5879, requiring that a person seeking licensure as a cosmetologist complete training on diverse hair types and textures, including curl, coil, or wave patterns, hair strand thicknesses, and volumes of hair.

“When we ensure that individual differences are recognized in salons and barbershops, we foster an inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable,” Harper said. “That’s why I’m working to raise the bar on professional standards in hairdressing across Illinois.”

JACKSON PARK HOSPITAL EARNS AN “A“ HOSPITAL SAFETY GRADE FROM LEAPFROG GROUP

Chicago, Ill. – Jackson Park Hospital & Medical Center earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety. Leapfrog assigns an “A”, “B”, “C”, “D”, or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

“Jackson Park Hospital & Medical Center is dedicated to providing compassionate and high-quality healthcare for the patients on the South Side of Chicago. We take pride in being acknowledged as one of the few hospitals in Illinois to have received and “A” for safety during Leapfrog’s Fall 2024 grading period. This was a team effort on the part of the entire Jackson Park Hospital Family,” states, Dr. William Dorsey, chairman and CEO of the hospital.

Serving the inner-city of the South Shore community since 1921, Jackson Park Hospital provides all major services that are available at most acute general hospitals, including an outpatient center and emergency services.

“Achieving an “A” Hospital Safety Grade is a significant accomplishment for Jackson Park,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It reflects enormous dedication to patients and their families and the whole community should be proud. I extend congratulations to Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center, its leadership, clinicians and staff for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

Church Breaks Ground On New Worship Facility

On Good Friday, April 15, 2022, there was a fire at the church, which burned for five days and severely damaged the sanctuary building. Due to structural damage, the sanctuary building had to be demolished. The Empowerment Center did not incur fire damage, but did incur smoke and water damage and had to be renovated.

The Reverend Dr. Gerald M. Dew, Lead Pastor of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, recalled receiving the word from a trustee about the church being on fire, seeing the smoke from a distance, then seeing it up close.

“You could see from the Dan Ryan, at about 95th Street, I saw black smoke, 79th street, I saw white smoke, so I’m thinking they’re putting the fire out. By the time I got to 67th Street and Stewart, it was all black smoke and I don’t know how many fire trucks, ladder trucks and the main sanctuary was totally engulfed in flames,” he said. Dew said he was hoping to break ground on Easter Sunday in April of this year, so he is excited but disappointed about the time it took to get to the groundbreaking and start of construction. He added that he is thankful the groundbreaking and start of construction took place around Thanksgiving. Construction started on the same day as the groundbreaking.

Antioch Missionary Baptist Church engages the community through outreach, including a prison ministry, supporting seniors and holding discipleship programs. Dew said his vision for the church is that it serves the community and meets the needs of the congregation and beyond. Building the new facility is meant to serve the residents and congregation who currently are there, while looking forward towards the future of the congregation and community.

Dew said there is a large contingent of virtual congregation members who are from across the country. Those people were able to view the groundbreaking online and celebrate with the church. During the groundbreaking, Dew said the groundbreaking was a long time coming and he was happy that people were able to share in the event.

The construction project is slated to take 12 to 14 months to complete. The project will include a worship center with a 900-seat auditorium, a dedicated worship space for children and youth, a formal banquet hall, and a wellness center for the congregation and community. The Empowerment Center will have a gymnasium, computer lab, a cafeteria and banquet facil-

CTA Red Line Extension Project to Provide Financial Assistance to Far South Side Residents Seeking

As part of the historic Red Line Extension (RLE) Project, CTA announced a new program that aims to remove financial obstacles for Far South Side residents by paying for job training, construction clothing, transportation and other needs to obtaining training and employment and building careers.

The Red Line Extension Project’s Barrier Reduction Fund will provide funding to eligible individuals in the project area who are pursuing training and careers, even if they ultimately wind up working for employers and projects beyond CTA.

Red Line Extension (RLE) Project Overview

“As the Red Line Extension Project moves forward and connects the South Side to the greater Chicago area, it’s critical to include community members in the construction project. I’m proud to have helped secure the federal funding necessary to help South Side residents pursue training and career opportunities with CTA and beyond,” said Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02). “Basic needs, like clothing and transit cards, should never stand in the way of future employment, but financial challenges have prevented South Side residents from getting ahead. By removing financial obstacles, they can be in a better position for success.”

“The Red Line Extension Project is creating new pathways to training and careers that support families and strengthen neighborhoods on the Far South Side,” said CTA President Dorval R. Carter, Jr. “This includes helping people with some of the most basic needs, such as a pair of work boots or help buying a transit card to get to work. We’re proud that the Red Line Extension can provide a boost to people who need it.”

The RLE project is a 5.5-mile extension of the Red Line starting at 95th Street Terminal to the vicinity of 130th Street and includes building four new, accessible stations near 103rd Street, 111th Street, Michigan Avenue and 130th Street, each of which is expected to include bus, bike, pedestrian and parking facilities.

This year marked a significant leap forward in Alzheimer’s research and awareness, with progress in treatment options, diagnostic tools, and understanding risk factors. As 2024 draws to a close, here’s a look at five important breakthroughs that are shaping the future of Alzheimer’s care and prevention.

1. FDA Approves a Third Drug to Slow Alzheimer’s Progression

The FDA approved a third medication shown to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. This development brings renewed hope to individuals living with Alzheimer’s and their families, offering more options to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

2. Advances in Blood Tests for Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

Blood tests for Alzheimer’s made significant strides in 2024, providing a more accessible and less invasive way to diagnose the disease. These advancements improve early detection and ensure that more people can access the treatments and resources they need.

People who are eligible for the Barrier Reduction Fund are individuals who are actively participating in any of four workforce assistance agency programs that partner with CTA. They are: Chicago Women in Trades (CWIT) HIRE 360

The project will also build a new rail yard and related rail facilities near 120th Street to improve operational efficiency for the entire Red Line and CTA system. Construction is expected to start in late 2025 and be completed by 2030.

3. Calls for Better Post-Diagnosis Support Many individuals living with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers have voiced the need for more robust support systems following a dementia diagnosis. From emotional counseling to practical resources, this ongoing conversation highlights the importance of comprehensive care and guidance during a challenging time.

4. Wildfire Smoke Increases Dementia Risk

In a surprising discovery, researchers found that exposure to wildfire smoke poses a higher risk for dementia than other forms of air pollution. This finding emphasizes the need for environmental awareness and protective measures for at-risk populations.

5. A Shift in How Alzheimer’s is Defined Scientists are redefining Alzheimer’s by focusing on the physical changes in the brain—such as the buildup of amyloid plaques and tau tangles—rather than relying solely on memory loss as a defining symptom. This shift in perspective may lead to earlier and more accurate diagnoses, allowing interventions to begin sooner.

Hope Chicago Rallies New Public-Private Support for Chicago Families

CHICAGO – Hope Chicago, the two-generation economic mobility and gap-closing scholarship program, convened more than 500 supporters Wednesday evening at The Salt Shed for its annual Hopecoming fundraiser to showcase a movement of growing public-private support behind the organization’s mission.

Business leaders, philanthropists, civic leaders, and entrepreneurs enjoyed a night filled with surprises, including an opening performance by the Morgan Park High School marching band, videos from Governor JB Pritzker and House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, as well as surprise entertainment by The Dirty Thirty, Bruno Mars’ house band, and singer-songwriter Gavin Turek.

During the live auction, Chicago Bears’ Defensive Back Kyler Gordon announced a surprise gift of $200,000 to support Hope Chicago on behalf of Bears Care.

Event honorees, Monique and Melvin Rodriguez, founders of Mielle Organics, were recognized for their outstanding commitment to expanding opportunities for young people. Melvin is co-chair of Hope Chicago’s Board of Directors and Monique is a member of Hope Chicago’s Executive Leadership Advisory Board.

“After my 22 years in classrooms and leading Chicago Public Schools, I’ve seen Chicago students do all the right things to prepare for their futures, only to be thwarted by systemic barriers like the rising cost of college, which then changes the course of their lives,” said Dr. Janice K. Jackson, CEO of Hope Chicago. “With Hopecoming, we celebrate the collective efforts of Chicago’s business, philanthropic, and civic leaders, who are helping Hope Chicago turn these dreams into reality. Like us, our supporters understand that education beyond high school—whether it’s a degree, career training, or an apprenticeship—is the key to unlocking economic independence, and by extension, building stronger communities and a more resilient economy.”

In the three years since its launch, Hope Chicago has become a transformative force in Illinois’ higher education landscape, dedicated to breaking down barriers faced by low-income families in underserved neighborhoods.

With a mission to provide access to debt-free degrees and professional certifications for two generations within each family (students and parents/guardians), Hope Chicago has enrolled more than 1,800 Scholars in higher education institutions and workforce programs across Illinois. By focusing efforts in five high schools on the South and West Sides of Chicago, the organization is building a supportive ecosystem that empowers students and their families to pursue educational aspirations without the barrier of student loans.

Wednesday evening marked a new milestone for Hope Chicago with significant new and renewed investments by Chicago’s business community, including:

$1 Million donation from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois

$1 Million donation from BMO

$1 Million donation from McDonald’s USA

These early investors join a growing list of individuals, foundations, and businesses committing to Hope Chicago’s Promise Fund, a public-private partnership to address the growing need for postsecondary education and training, especially among low-income Black and Latino students. The initiative will help 4,000 students and 1,000 parents access and complete higher education debt-free over the next five years. Through strategic partnerships and evaluation by the University of Chicago, the program aims to reshape the accessibility and success of higher education for underrepresented communities.

“Hope Chicago strengthens the fabric of our hometown city and brightens its future, and McDonald’s is proud to join the growing coalition supporting debt-free access to higher education for Chicago students,” said Michael Gonda, Senior VP and Chief Impact Officer at McDonald’s USA. “This model is deeply connected to our purpose of feeding and fostering community, and we know that its impact will drive meaningful outcomes for multiple generations.”

“Investing in Hope Chicago directly expands access to higher education, career advancement, upskilling, and good jobs – for two generations of Chicagoans at a time,” said Stephen Harris, President of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of

Illinois. “By empowering families in this way, we’re strengthening their futures and building healthier, more resilient communities. When people have the resources to thrive, everyone benefits.”

“Working to help eliminate generational, systemic barriers to education and workforce opportunities for Chicagoans is an investment that drives real financial progress for our Chicago community,” said Eric Smith, Vice Chair, BMO. “BMO was Hope Chicago’s first corporate partner in 2021 and we’re proud to continue our support, to help strengthen the community we serve, aligned to BMO’s Purpose, to Boldly Grow the Good in business and life.”

This month, Hope Chicago released its Year 3 Impact Report, highlighting significant progress in the implementation of its model:

Hope Scholar’s first cohort (Class of 2022) has produced a 66% increase in the number of students enrolled through two full academic years when comparing the Class of 2021.

The percentage of CPS students enrolling in postsecondary education pathways grew from 51% (prior to Hope Chicago) to 74% (after the first cohort). This figure rose to 78% in 2023 and 81% in 2024 with the subsequent cohorts.

Latino student enrollment in the program surged from 31% before Hope Chicago to 85% in 2024.

Black student enrollment increased from 55% to 70% in Hope’s first year, with 75% of Black CPS students at partner high schools now enrolled in postsecondary pathways.

In its inaugural year, the Parent Scholar program enrolled 135 parents, with 85% persisting in their program pathways and showing progress by the following year.

The economic implications of increasing postsecondary education access are profound. A recent Georgetown University study projects that by 2030, 72% of jobs in the U.S. will require postsecondary education or training. Yet, currently, only 54% of adults earn a credential after high school. In Chicago, the situation is even more alarming, with just 27% of graduates from neighborhood high schools expected to obtain a credential.

The State of Illinois continues to prioritize its tourism industry as millions of visitors spend billions of dollars annually across Illinois, boosting economic development and supporting jobs in the industry. Illinois welcomed 2.16 million international visitors in 2023, reflecting a substantial 39% increase from the previous year, according to data provided by Tourism Economics. This surge in international visitation showcases Illinois as an increasingly sought-after global destination. Additionally, international visitors injected nearly $2.7 billion into Illinois’ economy in 2023, representing a 47% increase in spending compared to the previous year.

“Visitors from near and far continue to venture to Illinois to enjoy the Middle of Everything,” said Speaker Pro Tempore Jehan Gordon-Booth (D – Peoria). “This grant funding will help showcase Illinois’ appeal to an international audience while growing our award-winning tourism industry.”

The top five markets for visitation to Illinois in 2023 include Canada, Mexico, India, the U.K. and Germany.

Canada emerged as the leading market for international visitation, with an impressive increase from 425,000 to 627,000 visitors, representing a substantial 48% growth.

Overseas visitors (defined as visitors

not from Canada and Mexico) also showed significant growth, surging from 963,000 visitors in 2022 to 1,347,000 in 2023, marking a 40% increase.

India demonstrated substantial growth in visitors to Illinois, with an increase of 55% from 2019 to 2023.

Mexico contributed to the upward trend, with visitation numbers climbing from 164,000 to 183,000, reflecting a notable 12% rise.

The Illinois Office of Tourism attributes this growth to strategic marketing initiatives, enhanced partnerships and a wide array of unique attractions and experiences that appeal to international travelers. The Illinois Office of Tourism partners with offshore offices in the U.K., Germany, Mexico and India to promote and market Illinois to international travelers.

The Illinois Office of Tourism leads tourism industry efforts to inspire visitation to, and within Illinois, resulting in significant economic impact and quality-of-life benefits for all Illinois residents. We are committed to making Illinois a model of inclusivity and celebration of diversity.

extremely difficult discussions that will expose, illustrate, and offer suggestions of resolve through legislation and grassroot organizing.

“Chicago is one of the true meccas of the Civil Rights movement and has benefitted from so many of the van guard organizations that were birthed in many of our neighborhoods. Therefore, it is fitting that lawmakers, civic leaders, and African American business leaders from around the nation come here to discuss not only political and health issues, but also address gun violence in our communities, creating generational wealth and enhancing our educational system.” says Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation Executive Director Tiffany D. Hightower.

Joint ILBC Chairperson Representative Ammons adds, “This year’s summit will focus on sustaining, enhancing, and creating models of progress in wake of the recent elections. Collectively we must work tirelessly to improve the lives of all workers by supporting policies that strengthen workplace protections and expand economic opportunities. We not only have to prepare our collective agenda to address the anticipated challenges of the future but continue to address the historical inequalities that have plagued communities of color for generations. “

“The 2024 ILBCF summit comes at a critical time in the history of this nation where many uncertainties and unanswered questions must be addressed. With media reports of potential dismantling of federal agencies that were originally created as protections against discrimination and biases, it is imperative that we have a common agenda that is inclusive of pushing back against such dangerous actions.” Says Bishop Larry D. Trotter of the Sweet Holy Spirit Church of Chicago.

The two-day summit will offer numerous panel discussions that will bring attention to hardcore disparities in healthcare, economics, social programs, voter suppression, generational gaps, crime, gender equality and the criminal justice system.

The ILBCF hopes to build the capacity of community leaders to shape programs, policy, and care and to engage in evidence-based advocacy. But to also share community-driven practices and initiatives to tackle various disparities, including research engagement, innovative programming, policy/advocacy, and other unique topics.

(StatePoint) Even a short vacation from school can cause learning loss and leave kids feeling behind when they return to the classroom. Fortunately, there are many ways to keep minds active during the holiday break, some of which will reinforce the concepts they are learning in school. Here are a few of them:

Vacation Reading: Whether you’re traveling for the holidays or sticking close to home, curling up with a book is a great way to spend some of the inevitable down time. At the start of the break, hit up the library so everyone in the family will have plenty to read on subjects of interest to them. You might also consider giving at least one title to each gift recipient on your list this year to emphasize the idea that books can be treasured objects.

Online Math Tools: Casio’s suite of engaging education resources can help ensure students keep up their skills during the holidays. Those with the fx-9750GIII graphing

How

calculator or (other easy-to-use models with hundreds of functions) will find plenty to challenge them when they check out Casio’s expansive resource library of activities, Python programs and more, all of which are available for free online. From calculating slopes and finding derivatives to evaluating inferences and predications based on data, the resource includes exercises for every area of mathematical focus, including calculus, geometry and statistics.

Historical Day Trip: Take a day trip to a historic site to bring the past to life. Whether you visit a battlefield, the home of a notable figure, or a historically preserved city center, your trip will provoke discussion and keep minds engaged. If taking a scheduled tour is not possible due to limited holiday hours, do a bit of research on the site beforehand to give your family more context about what they will be seeing. This will make the trip more enjoyable and engaging. Exercise: Staying active is not just good for physical health, it’s also good for the mind and soul. With no P.E. class on the schedule however, kids may be missing out on their daily dose of exercise. Be sure to go on a walk or bike ride each day or get out in the yard for some touch football or frisbee. If the weather is frightful, visit a yoga studio or even stay home and do an exercise class on YouTube. This holiday season, balancing educational and healthy activities with fun and relaxation can help ensure your students return to school focused, engaged and ready to start a
