RICHTON PARK, Ill. — Southland College Prep Charter High School placed first in two categories in the Illinois High School Association’s State Speech Series this weekend in Peoria, Ill. Five Southland students competed in three categories: Humorous Duet Acting, Dramatic Duet Acting and Oratorical Declamation.
Junior Courtney Clemons was named the state champion in Oratorical Declamation with her performance of “The Power of Vulnerability.” Seniors and twin brothers Jeremiah and Jacob Smith earned first place in Humorous Duet Acting with their piece, “A Teenager’s Guide to Surviving a Horror Movie: Run! Run! Run!”

Coalition Of Human Services Organizations Call For A Living Wage For Human Service Workers

The Illinois Partners for Human Services has a coalition of more than 850 organizations across the State of Illinois that provide human services directly to people across communities in the state. The Illinois Partners for Human Services started the Living Wages, Thriving Communities Campaign with the goal of increasing state investment in community-based human services organizations.
Cosette Ayele, Director of Advocacy and Workforce Initiatives, and the Illinois Partners for Human Services, said for the last 20 years, those organizations have been saying that they have been consistently underfunded. Because of that lack of funding from the State, they have been unable to pay their workers a living wage. Ayele said with the Living Wages, Thriving Communities Campaign, those organizations hope that those human services workers can receive better pay.
Human services workers include therapists, disability advocates, childcare workers, afterschool care workers, health navigators and substance use counselors. Ayele said these workers play vital roles in supporting individuals and families, yet they still remain underpaid.
Ayele said that is only for one year and continued investment in the program is essential. She said she would like to see even greater investment in the program, so Illinois Partners for Human Services is asking for a minimum of $7.5 million, which would allow the organization to reach more than 750 people across the state and provide low wage workers with student loan repayment.
“This is a highly educated workforce, with jobs that require bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and advanced certificates and they are not seeing a return on investment due to their low wages. I feel like the least we could do is make sure they’re not burdened by student loans,” Ayele said.
The Human Services Equitable Pay Act would bring pay parity between people at community-based organizations and people who work at the Illinois Department of Human Services. Ayele said that in talking to coalition partners and community providers the coalition has found that what they are able to pay a case worker is often 50% to 100% lower than what the state pays workers at state agencies that do similar work. Ayele said the coalition wants legislators to support and co-sponsor these pieces of legislation so that it can pass in the State.
The Illinois Partners for Human Services is asking legislators to co-sponsor and support the Living Wages, Thriving Communities Resolution. The Resolution, HR151, SR122, which would ensure the State of Illinois prioritizes people who provide humans services in the budget.
“For the past 27 years, we have been underfunded and we want that to be increased. Part of the first step of that is passing a resolution that calls for the state to care and to really put their money where their values are,” Ayele said.
There are two other bills that are part of the campaign, HB 1588, SB 1306, which would seek continued investment in the Human Services Professional Loan Repayment Program and HB2695, The Human Services Equitable Pay Act. The Illinois Partners for Human Services was able to secure $5.25 million for Fiscal Year 2025, which would support more than 500 workers who provide human services in the state with a loan repayment of up to $25,000.
“We know that when community-based organizations are underfunded, that directly impacts Black and brown communities because people who live in these communities care more about going to their community providers. We want to make sure people who are providing direct services in their community are also able to make a wage that is comparable to those who work in state agencies,” Ayele said. She also wants to see legislators vote yes on the passage of these pieces of legislation.
Ayele said there is an immediate need to pass this legislation. She said in the wake of community-based human services organizations having their funding threatened, the coalition felt something needed to be done at the state level to ensure the state knows the direct impact of those organizations losing their funding from the federal government, as well as the historical underfunding they have experienced locally for more than 20 years.

Olive-Harvey College Launches Criminal and Social Justice Center
CHICAGO — Olive-Harvey College (OHC) has launched its Criminal and Social Justice Center to support communities across the city and beyond. A ribbon cutting took place on Thursday, Feb, 27.
Initiated under the vision of Dr. Jeffery Dillard, an esteemed professor at Olive-Harvey College, the Center for Criminal and Social Justice will advance justice through an intersectional framework that integrates social, ecological, and economic equality for every community. Olive-Harvey College is establishing itself as the central hub for Criminal and Social Justice on the South Side of Chicago, offering a wide range of programs including degrees in Criminal Justice and a pathway to becoming a police officer—to being a catalyst for positive change as it supports the community in finding and learning more about social justice and connecting people to impactful resources.
The Center for Criminal and Social Justice will provide
legal services that include expungement services, as well as social support services and advocacy such as “Know Your Rights” seminars for individuals and communities adversely affected or impacted by the criminal legal system. The launch of the Center also aligns with Olive-Harvey College’s Criminal Justice and Restorative Justice in Cannabis programs as well as its courses in Africana Studies, Sociology, art, music, poetry and more.

The Impact of Daylight Saving Time on Sleep Patterns and Dementia: What You Need to Know
Most of the country will lose an hour of sleep this weekend with Daylight Saving Time. Sleep pattern changeslike those we experience during Daylight Saving Time - have been shown to affect different aspects of our physical and psychological health, including our brain health. In fact, research is published regularly that suggests poor sleep -- like sleep apnea and insomnia -- may increase our risk for dementia, while getting regular healthy sleep may reduce our risk of dementia.
It is Jungman STEM Magnet School’s second year to be awarded as a Magnet School of Excellence, and this year, the school has also been recognized as a top awardee, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing journey toward excellence. The school’s Principal, Suzanne Luzzi, was also recently named by MSA as a 2025 Principal of the Year for Regional VI, which represents Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
When Principal Luzzi took the helm in 2014, Jungman was in precarious standing with declining enrollment. A decade later, Jungman’s transformation into a STEM magnet school is nearly complete, with help from a $15 million Magnet Schools Assistance Program (MSAP) grant from the US Department of Education. The school now has a thriving academic program with waiting lists for enrollment.

At the same time, people living with dementia and their family caregivers often experience changes in sleep patterns, wandering and regular bouts of insomnia. This can be exhausting and stressful for everyone involved. But there are effective ways to manage sleep issues.
Daylight saving time (DST) can have significant impacts on people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Here’s why:
1. Disruption of Sleep Patterns: One of the hallmark symptoms of Alzheimer’s is disrupted sleep, and DST can exacerbate this. The time change might make it harder for those with Alzheimer’s to adjust their sleep-wake cycles, leading to further confusion, agitation, and difficulty sleeping.
2. Increased Disorientation: People with Alzheimer’s may already have difficulty recognizing time or place. The sudden change in time can worsen feelings of disorientation and confusion, as it can be hard for them to understand the shift.

Companies Face Immediate Backlash for Abandoning DEI Pledges

Corporate America’s retreat from diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) commitments is already having significant repercussions, with consumer boycotts, stock fluctuations, and mounting legal battles reshaping the financial landscape for major firms. Companies that once championed DEI efforts in the wake of George Floyd’s murder have begun to abandon these initiatives under mounting conservative pressure, only to face economic and public relations consequences of their own. Target is at the center of a lawsuit alleging it misled investors about its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and DEI policies. The lawsuit argues that Target’s messaging led to widespread boycotts following its 2023 LGBTQ+ Pride campaign, which extended into a 2024 backlash. The impact on the retailer’s bottom line has been undeniable, with Target’s stock price experiencing a sharp decline. On a recent trading day, shares dipped another 28 cents. Further, Blue Chip Partners LLC reduced its holdings in Target by 6.8% in the fourth quarter, selling more than 10,000 shares.
Despite dropping its own DEI initiative, Walmart has fared better than Target, even as Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund recently divested from the retailer. On Feb. 14, Walmart’s stock slipped from $105.30 per share opening to $103.60, a minor dip compared to the larger financial instability seen elsewhere. Other corporations abandoning DEI commitments are feeling the strain in different ways. Ford, which eliminated its DEI program, is now facing what many argue is the karma of a staggering $2.5 billion in punitive damages from a recent jury verdict in Columbus. McDonald’s has seen its stock continue steadily declining, falling to $308.55 per share, with Blue Chip Partners LLC also selling off its holdings in the fast-food giant. Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, preparing to comply with executive orders to dismantle DEI programs, have also taken hits. Coca-Cola’s stock dropped by more than 63 cents, while PepsiCo saw a more than $1.19 per share decline.
Some companies that have retreated from DEI, such as Meta and JPMorgan Chase, have managed to hold their ground. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has cozied up to MAGA figures, shielding the company from harsher backlash. Meanwhile, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who has long advocated for diversity,advocated for diversity, recently downplayed DEI training programs, insisting the bank’s approach to minority communities remains unchanged. The company’s stock has remained steady at $276.59. Citigroup and Morgan Stanley have also largely avoided financial fallout, maintaining relatively stable stock prices despite walking back their diversity commitments. However, Citigroup’s decision to remove or alter its public-facing DEI language has drawn criticism. Goldman Sachs took a similar step, scrapping a requirement that companies it takes public must have at least two diverse board members, citing legal developments.
The entertainment and media industries are not immune. Disney has overhauled its DEI initiatives, dropping its “Reimagine Tomorrow” website and adjusting diversity-related content warnings. While Disney’s stock has fluctuated, it recently slightly increased by 79 cents. Meanwhile, PBS has shuttered its DEI office, citing the need to comply with anti-DEI executive orders. Corporate compliance with Trump-aligned policies is also apparent in the beverage and consulting industries. Bloomberg reported that Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are adjusting their policies to align with federal contract regulations. Deloitte has told U.S. Eemployees working with government clients to remove pronouns from their email signatures, rolling back its DEI goals. Accenture, another major consulting firm, has eliminated diversity targets in hiring and promotion, citing the Trump administration’s stance.
Retailers and financial institutions are also responding. Lowe’s has merged its employee resource groups under one umbrella and cut its participation in external diversity events. Truist Financial Corp. recently trimmed its stake in Lowe’s, selling off over 39,000 shares. Meanwhile, Amazon omitted DEI language from its latest SEC filing, signaling a broader shift in corporate strategies. Boeing has dismantled its DEI department, folding those responsibilities into human resources. Consumer and activist backlash have been swift. The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), representing the Black Press of America, has launched a national public education and selective buying campaign in response to corporate America’s retreat from DEI. The NAACP has also issued a spending guide identifying businesses that have abandoned or upheld diversity commitments. Pastor Jamal Bryant of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta has called for a 40-day economic fast against Target, urging 100,000 people to halt spending at the retailer. Bryant noted that Target had pledged $2 billion toward Black-owned businesses but rescinded that commitment in January.

The drop came on February 28, the designated economic blackout day, and coincided with mounting backlash over the retailer’s decision to abandon its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) commitments.
The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) has taken action through its Public Education and Selective Buying Campaign. NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. said, “Black consumers helped build Target into a retail giant, and now they are making their voices heard. If corporations believe they can roll back diversity commitments without consequence, they are mistaken.”
Reverend Jamal Bryant, pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Georgia, has led calls for a “40-Day Target Fast,” urging Black consumers to withhold their spending at the retailer. “Black
people spend $12 million a day at Target,” Bryant said. “If we withhold our dollars, we can make a statement that cannot be ignored.”
The NAACP also issued a Black Consumer Advisory in response to Target’s DEI rollback, warning Black consumers about corporate retreat from diversity initiatives. The advisory urges them to support businesses that remain committed to investing in Black communities.
Target is also facing legal battles. Shareholders have filed lawsuits challenging the company’s DEI policies, arguing that the commitments hurt financial performance. Meanwhile, conservative groups have sued over Target’s diversity efforts, claiming they discriminated against white employees and other groups.

BLACK FIRST-TIME HOME BUYERS see strongest rebound as national rates decline
SEATTLE, PRNewswire -- While recent first-time home buyer rates have declined nationally, Black buyers have experienced the strongest rebound. A recent Zillow® survey found that 62% of Black home buyers purchased their first home in 2024, holding steady from the previous year. In comparison, overall, first-time buyers made up just 44% of the market, down from 50% in 2023.
After a sharp drop from 47% in 2019 to 35% in 2021, the share of Black first-time buyers rebounded to 55% in 2022 and hit a record 63% in 2023 — outpacing other racial groups and the national trend.
“Despite affordability challenges, Black first-time home buyers are demonstrating a strong commitment to homeownership, a key driver of generational wealth,” said Zillow Senior Economist Orphe Divounguy. “While income disparities and saving difficulties continue to delay home buying for Black households, programs like down payment assistance, first-time buyer tax credits and flexible lending options have helped increase access.”
The rise of remote work has also expanded opportunities, giving some Black renters more flexibility to pursue homeownership in more affordable areas. Zillow research shows that Black renters are 29% more likely than other renters to be at a tipping point where remote work could make homeownership achievable.
Still, high housing costs and strict building regulations in many metropolitan markets limit opportunities for many buyers across the country, disproportionately impacting lower-income households — particularly Black households and other households of color. These areas often face supply constraints that drive up prices, and in markets with stricter building regulations, even fewer listings are affordable for
the typical Black household.
A key measure of housing affordability is the monthly housing burden compared to household income. Black households face the steepest barriers, earning a median income of $54,896 — far below the $95,213 needed to buy the typical U.S. home in 2024 without being cost-burdened (spending more than 30% of income on housing). As a result, just 17.6% of listings are affordable for the typical Black household, compared to 28.2% for Hispanic, 37.9% for white, and 56.8% for Asian households, underscoring persistent gaps in homeownership.
St. Louis is the most affordable1 housing market for typical Black households — those households earning the median income — with 30.3% of listings within reach in 2024. Birmingham follows at 29.5%, and Memphis at 29.0%. Other affordable markets include Detroit (28.6%), Baltimore (25.8%), Pittsburgh (23.7%), Cleveland (22.8%), Indianapolis (22.0%), Atlanta (19.2%) and Oklahoma City (18.8%). In contrast, the least affordable markets for potential Black home buyers are concentrated on the West Coast, including major California metros and Seattle.

The National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) recently released its 2024 State of Housing in Black America Report, shedding light on a troubling yet unsurprising reality: the gap between Black and White homeownership has widened since 1970. This disparity is not just a statistic—it represents a significant loss of wealth within Black communities, including here in the Greater Chicagoland area.
The reasons behind this decline are numerous and complex, but regardless of the causes, one truth remains—we must take actionable steps to improve our financial standing and build generational wealth within our communities.
In recent years, the term “generational wealth” has become a buzzword, frequently mentioned but rarely understood in depth.
Many recognize that wealth is tied to money, but few grasp the fundamental processes required to transform income into lasting financial security for future generations.
Like any long journey, the path to generational wealth begins with a single step. One of the most crucial principles to embrace is simple yet powerful: stop buying what you want and begging for what you need. In other words, “pay yourself first.”
Consider these questions when evaluating your spending habits:
• Do we really need to subscribe to every streaming service?
• Do we really need to buy designer brands?
• Do we really need expensive, high-maintenance beauty treatments?

vs. Brawn: Putting the Latest Tech to the Test
(StatePoint) Before making a big tech purchase, it’s a good idea to compare product claims with third-party research. That’s where Allstate Protection Plans comes in. Since 2013, the protection plan provider has offered consumers an independent assessment of the durability of the latest and greatest tech against the rigors of everyday life. And now, its researchers have turned attention on the new Galaxy S25 Ultra, which, according to Samsung, is the “slimmest, lightest and most durable Galaxy Ultra device ever.” Sporting Galaxy AI, Samsung’s most advanced artificial intelligence yet, the S25 Ultra features a sleek titanium frame, a Corning Gorilla Glass Armor 2 display, and new AI-powered tools, including photo editing, improved Circle to Search, and personalized daily summaries powered by Google Gemini. While these innovations are impressive, Allstate Protection Plans wanted to see if the advanced design and technology could help protect the flagship phone from the unexpected.
Breakability Meets Intelligence
In its signature Breakability Drop Test, Allstate Protection Plans dropped the Galaxy S25 Ultra on its front, side and back from six feet onto concrete. Here were the results:
Front-Down Drop: The screen malfunctioned, rendering the device unusable. The front display went black except for two horizontal rows of white pixels across the top. The screen shattered, including raised glass across much of its surface, and a large ink blot was visible across the bottom of the display. The device also stopped producing audio. Though the S25 Ultra was not usable, its buttons were still functional, and haptics could be felt by pressing the Gemini Live button. Therefore, it’s possible the device could be saved with repair.
Back-Down Drop: The rear panel shattered, including raised glass across the right side where the device impacted the ground. The rear panel also bent outward along the same area. Two of the larger camera housings suffered minor scuffing. The device was fully functional, including all cameras. However, the raised glass across the back display meant that a case would be required for safe handling.
Side-Down Drop: The titanium frame had only minor damage. Where the frame impacted the ground, it suffered small dents and chips but was otherwise intact. The phone was fully functional, including the volume and Gemini Live buttons, which were on the impact-side of the drop.
The tests also assessed whether Galaxy S25 Ultra’s AI features were still functional after sustaining damage from a drop. ProVisual Engine, Gemini Live and Circle to Search were not affected after back-down and side-down drops. However, no AI capabilities were usable on the device that was dropped front-down.
Can AI Save the Day?
Curious whether the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s AI could protect itself from further damage, Allstate Protection Plans asked Google Gemini: “What’s the best way to protect a Galaxy S25 Ultra against damage from accidental drops?” The phone’s own AI suggested practical strategies, such as using a durable case, adding a screen protector and phone grip, and developing better handling habits.
