The program is available through a partnership with the State of Illinois, the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) and Kaplan.
The program is currently available at Chicago State University, Eastern Illinois University, Western Illinois University, Northern Illinois University and University of Illinois Springfield. There are plans to roll the program out at Governors State University, Illinois State University, Northeastern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, University of Illinois Chicago and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, as well as Carl Sandburg College, Joliet Junior College, Malcolm X College, Morton College and Southwestern Illinois College.
Illinois legislature. Ford said that test preparation can make a difference in how well a person does on a test. Ford said when he found out his daughter’s University offered a free test preparation program, he reached out to Kaplan to find out how to get the program in Illinois.
“If we want to give our students in Illinois a shot at getting as much money in scholarships as possible, they need to test well. If we want our students to have opportunities to get their licenses so they can get into the workforce, they need to test well, so they have a better chance,” Ford said.
Lynne Baker, Managing Director of Communications at Illinois Student Assistance Commission, said the program benefits students because they learn how to take the test and test prep does impact scores, which impacts admission.
“We believe it is very valuable for all students to have test prep like this,” she said.
Baker added that it is also a workforce initiative. The goal is for students to succeed and move forward in careers where there are shortages, like doctors and nurses. Since its rollout at the five public universities, more than 600 students have created accounts and students have registered for around 400 courses.
Illinois State Representative LaShawn K. Ford was instrumental in securing funding for the program in the
He added that it benefits the students and the community because it will bring a more diverse and robust workforce.
Ford said that the program also can help people from demographics who sometimes struggle with standardized test, because having test preparation can help them improve their scores and making it free takes away financial barriers that might serve as a roadblock. Ford, who is the Chair of House Appropriation -- Higher Education Committee, said he wanted to make sure this program was part of the Illinois budget. The Prepare for Illinois’ Future Program is receiving $10 million.
“When you think about people that do well on tests, the majority of Americans are not just great test-takers, they actually prep for it … People spend money on prep, so they can have better outcomes,” he said. He added that it wasn’t difficult to get bipartisan support for the program.

For the first time in Illinois, the Secretary of State’s office is making Electronic Lien and Titling (ELT) available when purchasing a vehicle from a participating dealer, Secretary Alexi Giannoulias announced.
Illinois joins 25 other states that have active ELT programs. This new program allows vehicle titles to be processed, stored and released digitally, eliminating the need for arduous paperwork, physical document mailing or in-person visits to a DMV facility.
“An electronic lien and titling program will make the process of buying a car significantly faster, more convenient and more secure than the paper system. What used to take months can be done with a few clicks, dramatically reducing the ‘Time Tax’ customers were forced to pay when titling a vehicle,” said Giannoulias. “Implementing new technology strategically enables our office to create efficiencies and benefit consumers. These investments are crucial to providing convenience, but more importantly security, for our customers and their data.”
The Illinois General Assembly first approved ELT in 2000 but outdated technology delayed full implementation. Upon taking office in 2023, Giannoulias made modernization a top priority and created the infrastructure to allow for ELT to launch.
ELT allows an individual purchasing a vehicle at a dealership to complete an online title application that determines whether the lender has opted in for ELT. If they have, an electronic copy of the paperwork is sent to the Secretary of State for review, and a third-party vendor stores the electronic record until it is time to release the title.
Instead of customers waiting for lienholders to search through physical title records that may be stored for years, lienholders can now mark the title as paid, and the Secretary of State will send the released title to the owner.
The ELT system also reduces the potential for fraud
Richton Park, Ill. -- Calvin JordanRich Township Supervisor and Democratic Committeeman was joined by the Rich Township Board of Trustees, and more than 700 of business leaders, elected officials, civic and clergy leaders in honoring ten African American giants as part of the 6TH Annual Rich Township Black History Month Gala and Awards Celebration.
Jordan, along with all 700 confirmed guests, stood and sent a clear message to President Trump that they would fight tooth and nail to sustain racial diversity, equality and justice.
This year’s event was not solely fo-
cused upon the honorees, but preparing the black community for a future that appears to be uncertain in many respects. Supervisor Jordan spoke to the capacity audience about the need for a strong voter registration push amid the vulnerability of public policy as it relates to the recent Presidential election.
This year’s honorees include: Honorable Justice Freddrenna M. Lyle, Illinois Appellate Court of Cook County
The Honorable Carl McCormick (Ret)
The Honorable Mariyana Spyropoulos, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County
within the Illinois General Assembly as it relates to progressive governing, advocating for women worldwide, and even the fashion code for women in government. Without her commitment to the advancement of the African American race, we would not have achieved the enormous progress that we have enjoyed over the past three decades. We all are in debt to these leaders for their undying love, compassion, and commitment to the upward mobility of the African American community.”
Most of the country will lose an hour of sleep this weekend with Daylight Saving Time. Sleep pattern changeslike those we experience during Daylight Saving Time - have been shown to affect different aspects of our physical and psychological health, including our brain health. In fact, research is published regularly that suggests poor sleep -- like sleep apnea and insomnia -- may increase our risk for dementia, while getting regular healthy sleep may reduce our risk of dementia.
At the same time, people living with dementia and their family caregivers often experience changes in sleep patterns, wandering and regular bouts of insomnia. This can be exhausting and stressful for everyone involved. But there are effective ways to manage sleep issues.
Daylight saving time (DST) can have significant impacts on people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Here’s why:
Carolyn Palmer, Trustee, Village of Matteson
Jackie D. Lynch, Nationally Recognized Pioneer in Organ Transplantation
Shirley Bomar-Cole, RN, BSN, MHS Bonita Estelle, External Affairs, COMED
Dr. Nykoa Farmer, L.H.D.
Dreina A. Lewis, Community advocate
Dr. Gene Chandler, “The Duke of Earl”
The evening featured multiple tributes, laughter, reflection, and an appreciation of history. The honorees addressed the mass crowd by showing their appreciation, but also charging the hundreds in attendance that there is much work to do to fulfill the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Supervisor Jordan also challenged those in attendance to focus their efforts on promoting diversity and inclusion in all of their professional and personal endeavors.
1. Disruption of Sleep Patterns: One of the hallmark symptoms of Alzheimer’s is disrupted sleep, and DST can exacerbate this. The time change might make it harder for those with Alzheimer’s to adjust their sleep-wake cycles, leading to further confusion, agitation, and difficulty sleeping.
2. Increased Disorientation: People with Alzheimer’s may already have difficulty recognizing time or place. The sudden change in time can worsen feelings of disorientation and confusion, as it can be hard for them to understand the shift.

“As a community we know all too well of the sacrifices and challenges that our modern day heroes have had to endure. But their efforts were only geared toward enhancing the quality of life of African Americans throughout the state of Illinois. Rich Township takes significant pride in ensuring that we honor these heroes during this very precious month for people of color. But our focus for this event must also be centered around the uncertainty of the future of our children amid the recent presidential election” says Rich Township Supervisor/Democratic Committeeman Calvin Jordan.
Matteson Mayor Sheila Chalmers-Currin adds, “Justice Freddrenna Lyle and so many other past recipients of the Lifetime Achievement award have successfully blazed the trail for so many women who have entered public life. She changed the entire landscape
Jordan adds, “There is simply no way I could have the most prominent African American leaders in one facility and not encourage them to be the leaders of racial harmony, fairness, and justice. The Southland is now the mecca of opportunity for young aspiring African American businesspersons and government leaders. Diversity has brought us this far, but greater diversity will lead us to the mountain of acceptance and equality.”
I was honored to be in attendance at such a magnificent gala. However, the common denominator from this event is the belief that Dr. King had a lofty, but much longed-for, dream. Through this beautiful event, we all have learned that character will someday matter more than skin color. That people of all races should come together in unity, rather than in discord.” says Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon.

by preventing “title-washing” and fraudulent lien releases when applying for a new title. These practices can prove devastating to customers who unknowingly purchase a stolen vehicle and to lienholders that are unaware of titles being fraudulently released.
The Secretary of State’s office does not charge for this service, but some ELT service providers may
charge fees to participating lienholders.
The first phase of the Illinois ELT program is focused on transitioning new titles to the electronic format. Future phases of the program may allow lienholders to convert existing paper titles to electronic format and enable vehicle owners to hold their titles electronically on their phones.
3. Changes in Routine: Individuals with Alzheimer’s thrive on routine. The abrupt change in time disrupts their daily habits, which could lead to heightened anxiety and agitation.
Tips for Coping with Daylight Saving Time for Alzheimer’s Caregivers:
• Adjust Gradually: In the days leading up to the time change, try to shift bedtime and waking times by 15 minutes each day to help ease the transition.
• Maintain a Consistent Routine: Stick to regular schedules for meals, sleep, and activities. Consistency can reduce confusion and anxiety.
• Promote Sunlight Exposure: Encourage exposure to natural light during the day, as this helps reset the internal clock and improves sleep quality.
• Be Patient: It may take a few days for your loved one to adjust to the new time. Offer comfort and reassurance during this period.
Understanding the Risk: Alzheimer’s disease can cause individuals to lose their sense of direction and familiarity, making them susceptible to wandering. Statistics show that six in 10 people living with dementia will wander at least once, with many doing so repeatedly. This behavior can occur at any stage of the disease, and its unpredictable nature adds significant stress for caregivers and family members.
While daylight saving time can present challenges for individuals with Alzheimer’s, caregivers can take steps to make the transition smoother and help their loved ones maintain a sense of stability.

NNPA NEWSWIRE — The impact on the retailer’s bottom line has been undeniable, with Target’s stock price experiencing a sharp decline.

Newswire Senior National Correspondent
Corporate America’s retreat from diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) commitments is already having significant repercussions, with consumer boycotts, stock fluctuations, and mounting legal battles reshaping the financial landscape for major firms. Companies that once championed DEI efforts in the wake of George Floyd’s murder have begun to abandon these initiatives under mounting conservative pressure, only to face economic and public relations consequences of their own. Target is at the center of a lawsuit alleging it misled investors about its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and DEI policies. The lawsuit argues that Target’s messaging led to widespread boycotts following its 2023 LGBTQ+ Pride campaign, which extended into a 2024 backlash. The impact on the retailer’s bottom line has been undeniable, with Target’s stock price experiencing a sharp decline. On a recent trading day, shares dipped another 28 cents. Further, Blue Chip Partners LLC reduced its holdings in Target by 6.8% in the fourth quarter, selling more than 10,000 shares.
Despite dropping its own DEI initiative, Walmart has fared better than Target, even as Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund recently divested from the retailer. On Feb. 14, Walmart’s stock slipped from $105.30 per share opening to $103.60, a minor dip compared to the larger financial instability seen elsewhere. Other corporations abandoning DEI commitments are feeling the strain in different ways. Ford, which eliminated its DEI program, is now facing what many argue is the karma of a staggering $2.5 billion in punitive damages from a recent jury verdict in Columbus. McDonald’s has seen its stock continue steadily declining, falling to $308.55 per share, with Blue Chip Partners LLC also selling off its holdings in the fast-food giant. Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, preparing to comply with executive orders to dismantle DEI programs, have also taken hits. Coca-Cola’s stock dropped by more than 63 cents, while PepsiCo saw a more than $1.19 per share decline. Some companies that have retreated from DEI, such as Meta and JPMorgan Chase, have managed to hold their ground. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has cozied up to MAGA figures, shielding the company from harsher backlash. Meanwhile, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, who has long advocated for diversity, advocated for diversity, recently downplayed DEI training programs, insisting the bank’s approach to minority communities remains unchanged. The company’s stock has remained steady at $276.59. Citigroup and Morgan Stanley have also largely avoided financial fallout, maintaining relatively stable stock prices despite walking back their diversity commitments. However, Citigroup’s decision to remove or alter its public-facing DEI language has drawn criticism. Goldman Sachs took a similar step, scrapping a requirement that companies it takes public must have at least two diverse board members, citing legal developments.
The entertainment and media industries are not immune. Disney has overhauled its DEI initiatives, dropping its “Reimagine Tomorrow” website and adjusting diversity-related content warnings. While Disney’s stock has fluctuated, it recently slightly increased by 79 cents. Meanwhile, PBS has shuttered its DEI office, citing the need to comply with anti-DEI executive orders. Corporate compliance with Trump-aligned policies is also apparent in the beverage and consulting industries. Bloomberg reported that Coca-Cola and PepsiCo are adjusting their policies to align with federal contract regulations. Deloitte has told U.S. Eemployees working with government clients to remove pronouns from their email signatures, rolling back its DEI goals. Accenture, another major consulting firm, has eliminated diversity targets in hiring and promotion, citing the Trump administration’s stance.
Retailers and financial institutions are also responding. Lowe’s has merged its employee resource groups under one umbrella and cut its participation in external diversity events. Truist Financial Corp. recently trimmed its stake in Lowe’s, selling off over 39,000 shares. Meanwhile, Amazon omitted DEI language from its latest SEC filing, signaling a broader shift in corporate strategies. Boeing has dismantled its DEI department, folding those responsibilities into human resources. Consumer and activist backlash have been swift. The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), representing the Black Press of America, has launched a national public education and selective buying campaign in response to corporate America’s retreat from DEI. The NAACP has also issued a spending guide identifying businesses that have abandoned or upheld diversity commitments. Pastor Jamal Bryant of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta has called for a 40-day economic fast against Target, urging 100,000 people to halt spending at the retailer. Bryant noted that Target had pledged $2 billion toward Black-owned businesses but rescinded that commitment in January.
“Black people spend $12 million a day at Target,” Bryant said on the Black Press’ Let It Be Known news program. “Because of how many dollars are spent there and the absence of commitment to our community, we are focusing on Target first.”
Target Corporation’s stock plummeted by approximately $27.27 per share by the end of February, erasing about $12.4 billion in market value. The drop came on February 28, the designated economic blackout day, and coincided with mounting backlash over the retailer’s decision to abandon its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) commitments.
The National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) has taken action through its Public Education and Selective Buying Campaign. NNPA President and CEO Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. said, “Black consumers helped build Target into a retail giant, and now they are making their voices heard. If corporations believe they can roll back diversity commitments without consequence, they are mistaken.”
Reverend Jamal Bryant, pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Georgia, has led calls for a “40-Day Target Fast,” urging Black consumers to withhold their spending at the retailer. “Black
people spend $12 million a day at Target,” Bryant said. “If we withhold our dollars, we can make a statement that cannot be ignored.”
The NAACP also issued a Black Consumer Advisory in response to Target’s DEI rollback, warning Black consumers about corporate retreat from diversity initiatives. The advisory urges them to support businesses that remain committed to investing in Black communities.
Target is also facing legal battles. Shareholders have filed lawsuits challenging the company’s DEI policies, arguing that the commitments hurt financial performance. Meanwhile, conservative groups have sued over Target’s diversity efforts, claiming they discriminated against white employees and other groups.
“Consumers have the power to demand change, and Target is learning that lesson the hard way,” Chavis said.

SEATTLE, PRNewswire -- While recent first-time home buyer rates have declined nationally, Black buyers have experienced the strongest rebound. A recent Zillow® survey found that 62% of Black home buyers purchased their first home in 2024, holding steady from the previous year. In comparison, overall, first-time buyers made up just 44% of the market, down from 50% in 2023.
After a sharp drop from 47% in 2019 to 35% in 2021, the share of Black first-time buyers rebounded to 55% in 2022 and hit a record 63% in 2023 — outpacing other racial groups and the national trend.
“Despite affordability challenges, Black first-time home buyers are demonstrating a strong commitment to homeownership, a key driver of generational wealth,” said Zillow Senior Economist Orphe Divounguy. “While income disparities and saving difficulties continue to delay home buying for Black households, programs like down payment assistance, first-time buyer tax credits and flexible lending options have helped increase access.”
The rise of remote work has also expanded opportunities, giving some Black renters more flexibility to pursue homeownership in more affordable areas. Zillow research shows that Black renters are 29% more likely than other renters to be at a tipping point where remote work could make homeownership achievable.
Still, high housing costs and strict building regulations in many metropolitan markets limit opportunities for many buyers across the country, disproportionately impacting lower-income households — particularly Black households and other households of color. These areas often face supply constraints that drive up prices, and in markets with stricter building regulations, even fewer listings are affordable for
the typical Black household.
A key measure of housing affordability is the monthly housing burden compared to household income. Black households face the steepest barriers, earning a median income of $54,896 — far below the $95,213 needed to buy the typical U.S. home in 2024 without being cost-burdened (spending more than 30% of income on housing). As a result, just 17.6% of listings are affordable for the typical Black household, compared to 28.2% for Hispanic, 37.9% for white, and 56.8% for Asian households, underscoring persistent gaps in homeownership.
St. Louis is the most affordable1 housing market for typical Black households — those households earning the median income — with 30.3% of listings within reach in 2024. Birmingham follows at 29.5%, and Memphis at 29.0%. Other affordable markets include Detroit (28.6%), Baltimore (25.8%), Pittsburgh (23.7%), Cleveland (22.8%), Indianapolis (22.0%), Atlanta (19.2%) and Oklahoma City (18.8%). In contrast, the least affordable markets for potential Black home buyers are concentrated on the West Coast, including major California metros and Seattle.

Zillow’s down payment assistance tool connects buyers with financial resources through a simple questionnaire and dedicated page. Zillow Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: Z and ZG) is reimagining real estate to make home a reality for more and more people. As the most visited real estate website in the United States, Zillow and its affiliates help people find and get the home they want by connecting them with digital solutions, dedicated partners and agents, and easier buying, selling, financing, and renting experiences.
Despite a steeper decline in the share of home listings that were affordable to the median earner, Black homeownership increased more than white homeownership in 2024 compared to 2019. Only Hispanic households saw a higher percentage increase in homeownership.
Black first-time home buyers are driving homeownership gains, but barriers remain. Zillow, a leader in real estate and technology, is helping to tackle some of these challenges

1 Affordability is based on total monthly costs — taxes, insurance, and maintenance — with a 20% down payment and mortgage costs under 30% of income, as of 2024.
The National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) recently released its 2024 State of Housing in Black America Report, shedding light on a troubling yet unsurprising reality: the gap between Black and White homeownership has widened since 1970. This disparity is not just a statistic—it represents a significant loss of wealth within Black communities, including here in the Greater Chicagoland area.
The reasons behind this decline are numerous and complex, but regardless of the causes, one truth remains—we must take actionable steps to improve our financial standing and build generational wealth within our communities.
In recent years, the term “generational wealth” has become a buzzword, frequently mentioned but rarely understood in depth.
Many recognize that wealth is tied to money, but few grasp the fundamental processes required to transform income into lasting financial security for future generations.
Like any long journey, the path to generational wealth begins with a single step. One of the most crucial principles to embrace is simple yet powerful: stop buying what you want and begging for what you need. In other words, “pay yourself first.”
Consider these questions when evaluating your spending habits:
• Do we really need to subscribe to every streaming service?
• Do we really need to buy designer brands?
• Do we really need expensive, high-maintenance beauty treatments?
• Do we really need to eat out multiple times a week?
If these questions prompt you to examine your spending habits, then you are already on the right path. The money saved from small but consistent changes can be redirected toward investments, property ownership, savings, and wealth-building opportunities for future generations.
As the old saying goes, “Watch your pennies, and your dollars will take care of themselves.” The time to start is now—build habits today that will lay the foundation for a financially secure tomorrow. Pay yourself first!!!
Bye for now,
Bren.

Matteson, IL – The 2025 UNCF/ SCSDD Gala was an unforgettable evening filled with celebration, recognition, and a shared commitment to advancing education. The event, hosted by the Superintendent’s Commission for the Study of Demographics and Diversity (SCSDD) in partnership with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), exceeded expectations, raising over $250,000 in scholarship funds to support students in their academic pursuits.
A highlight of the evening was the recognition of Dr. Johnnie Thomas, Superintendent of Rich Township High School District 227, named the 2025 Superintendent with Distinction by the Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA) South Cook Region. This prestigious award acknowledges Dr. Thomas’s exceptional leadership, unwavering dedication to student

Township government has become more popular over the past four years due to the deplorable set of circumstances in the Township of Thornton. Most southland residents lack knowledge of the role of township government and the impact it has in the daily lives of residents throughout the region. In fact, many other residents seem clueless upon being questioned about the role of a township supervisor, let alone that of the other elected offices held by township leaders.
However, over the past four years there were many positives originating out of Rich Township in which southland residents were pleased to hear. At the core of this positive note is Rich Township Supervisor Calvin Jordan and the wonderful team of elected officials and administrators that have produced outstanding results. In fact, in 2022 the Townships of Illinois organization honored Supervisor Jordan with the Supervisor of the Year
Award. This award has not been bestowed to many African American Township Supervisors which speaks profoundly to Calvin Jordan the leader.
Additionally, Supervisor Jordan and his team has produced and delivered so many benefits and services to the people of Rich Township that Rich Township was given the prestigious 2023 Township of the year. This is remarkable given that many of the services rendered have been at risk for severe cuts from the federal government as well as the elimination of services. But Supervisor Jordan and the Rich Township Board of Trustees and constitutional officers have coalesced their talents and presented to the public a fiscally sound budget with moderate to conservative spending protocols.
Rich Township’s spirit of excellence in governing their operations is the most brilliant alternative to the isolated troubles in which Thornton Township has exhibited given the allegations of corruption and unethical behavior. But to see the talents of diverse individuals in Rich Township working daily to ensure that all tax dollars are geared to its residents, gives credibility to the true definition of what township government is all about.
As it relates to the future of Thornton Township, it is very refreshing that voters have credible options. That is because the voters of Thornton Township have boldly proclaimed that “enough is enough.” All of Illinois is watching and remain hopeful that Thornton Township will eventually mirror that of the magnificent accomplishments of Rich Township.
Kudos to Supervisor Jordan and the full Rich Township Board.
administrators, and community partners who work tirelessly to provide students with the opportunities they deserve. The success of this gala and the generous support we’ve received is a testament to the transformative power of education.”
The annual gala brings educators, community leaders, and supporters together to raise crucial scholarship funds that enable students to access higher education and achieve their dreams. This year’s success underscores the continued dedication to investing in future generations.
Congratulations to Dr. Thomas on this well-earned honor, and a heartfelt thank you to all who contributed to this remarkable cause. Together, we are making a lasting impact on education and student success.

ILLINOIS TOLLWAY BOARD APPROVES NEW 7-YEAR, $2 BILLION CAPITAL PLAN
Bridging the Future Capital Plan to address connectivity and safety while the Tollway continues long-range strategic plan development of the Tollway’s next longterm capital program
DOWNERS GROVE, IL – The Illinois Tollway Board of Directors today approved a new multiyear capital plan that provides for planning, design and construction services that will complement infrastructure investments already underway and serve as a bridge between the Move Illinois Capital Program and the needs of the agency’s next long-term capital program.
“The Bridging the Future capital plan is a smart and balanced approach that ensures the completion of critical improvements as we continue the engagement necessary to advance our long-term capital planning process,” said Board Chairman Arnie Rivera. “The Illinois Tollway Board has a fiscal responsibility to prioritize strategic regional projects with system upkeep to leverage funds efficiently.”
The new $2 billion Bridging the Future capital plan establishes a path forward for 2025-2031 ensuring the Illinois Tollway continues to modernize its infrastructure to meet future demands and address maintenance needs for the five roadways on the Tollway system.
Funding for the Bridging the Future capital plan is not expected to require any adjustments in the Illinois Tollway’s current tolling structure nor any additional debt financing beyond that already planned for the Move Illinois Program.
“Throughout the past year, we’ve been gathering stakeholder and community input as part of our long-term strategic and capital planning process, and one thing we’ve heard across the board is that customers, communities and contractors don’t want to see a pause in progress or wait for the next capital program to begin,” said Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse. "The Bridging the Future plan will help keep our regional economic engine primed, delivering jobs and contract opportunities and also ensuring our planned infrastructure improvements remain on track.”
Scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, the Illinois Tollway’s current $15 billion capital program, Move Illinois: The Illinois Tollway Driving the Future, has yielded many accomplishments including completion in 2017 of the new Illinois Route 390 Tollway and a rebuilt and widened Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) with its new SmartRoad corridor, as well as completion of the new interchange in 2022 connecting the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) to I-57. Work is on schedule for construction of the new I-490 Tollway and reconstruction and widening of the Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294).
Bridging the Future Capital Plan
Overview The 7-year, $2 billion Bridging the Future capital plan approved by the Board will fund planning, design and construction to address ongoing modernization efforts that advance the region’s transportation network. The capital plan supports the Tollway’s ongoing investments in the people and firms that help deliver transformational projects that keep the region moving.
Bridging the Future projects include:
• Connecting Infrastructure – $258 million for interchange work design and construction including the Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355)/ Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) Interchange as well as the Illinois Route 390 Tollway at County Farm Road and I-88 at York Road/ 22nd Street interchanges. An investment will also be made for improvements to the Lake Cook Road Bridge over the Tri-State Tollway (I-94).
• Improving Mobility - $725 million for investments for bridge reconstruction and strategic widening projects including local crossroad and mainline bridges on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294), railroad bridges on the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) and Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88), as well as local crossroad bridge reconstruction on the north end of the Tri-State Tollway (I-94).
• Modernizing the System – $532 million for investments in system improvements and maintenance systemwide, including for bridge repairs, pavement rehabilitation and funding for upgrades to toll plazas and Tollway facilities.
• Preparing for Tomorrow – $485 million for technology investments in active traffic management, back-office system improvements and funding for pilot programs and studies.

That’s where Allstate Protection Plans comes in. Since 2013, the protection plan provider has offered consumers an independent assessment of the durability of the latest and greatest tech against the rigors of everyday life. And now, its researchers have turned attention on the new Galaxy S25 Ultra, which, according to Samsung, is the “slimmest, lightest and most durable Galaxy Ultra device ever.”
Sporting Galaxy AI, Samsung’s most advanced artificial intelligence yet, the S25 Ultra features a sleek titanium frame, a Corning Gorilla Glass Armor 2 display, and new AI-powered tools, including photo editing, improved Circle to Search, and personalized daily summaries powered by Google Gemini.
While these innovations are impressive, Allstate Protection Plans wanted to see if the advanced design and technology could help protect the flagship phone from the unexpected.
Breakability
Meets Intelligence
In its signature Breakability Drop Test, Allstate Protection Plans dropped the Galaxy S25 Ultra on its front, side and back from six feet onto concrete. Here were the results:
Front-Down Drop: The screen malfunctioned, rendering the device unusable. The front display went black except for two horizontal rows of white pixels across the top. The screen shattered, including raised glass across much of its surface, and a large ink blot was visible across the bottom of the display. The device also stopped producing audio. Though the S25 Ultra was not usable, its buttons were still functional, and haptics could be felt by pressing the Gemini Live button. Therefore, it’s possible the device could be saved with repair.
Back-Down Drop: The rear panel shattered, including raised glass across the
right side where the device impacted the ground. The rear panel also bent outward along the same area. Two of the larger camera housings suffered minor scuffing. The device was fully functional, including all cameras. However, the raised glass across the back display meant that a case would be required for safe handling.
Side-Down Drop: The titanium frame had only minor damage. Where the frame impacted the ground, it suffered small dents and chips but was otherwise intact. The phone was fully functional, including the volume and Gemini Live buttons, which were on the impact-side of the drop.
The tests also assessed whether Galaxy S25 Ultra’s AI features were still functional after sustaining damage from a drop.
ProVisual Engine, Gemini Live and Circle to Search were not affected after back-down and side-down drops. However, no AI capabilities were usable on the device that was dropped front-down.
Can AI Save the Day?
Curious whether the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s AI could protect itself from further damage, Allstate Protection Plans asked Google Gemini: “What’s the best way to protect a Galaxy S25 Ultra against damage from accidental drops?” The phone’s own AI suggested practical strategies, such as using a durable case, adding a screen protector and phone grip, and developing better handling habits. It also recommended considering phone insurance—wise advice, given the phone’s $1,299 price tag. For more information on protection plans that offer peace of mind, visit AllstateProtectionPlans.com.
“Ultimately, no phone is indestructible,” says Jason Siciliano, vice president of marketing and global creative director at Allstate Protection Plans. “Our tests show that even the smartest technology can benefit from some extra protection.”
