EDUCATION

Thornton Township recently held their first winter coat give away at the Town Hall in South Holland. The event was for residents of Thornton Township and offered 400 brand new coats for children and adults at no cost, with valid proof of residency. “We not only targeted veterans and battered women shelters and other social service organizations that might need coats, but on top of that, we put the information out into the community,” said Ernst Lamothe Jr., community relations manager for Thornton Township. Lamothe plans to make the coat give away an annual event and purposefully chose to hold the event in February because he knew that there would be people who were forgotten during the more common coat giveaways that happen during the Christmas season. “It’s been colder than the expected temperatures and we definitely knew that the need was gonna be great and it could be a very long winter. That’s why we wanted to have it in February for the people who might

have been forgotten around Christmas time, they are able to get a coat now,” said Lamothe. There were a wide variety of residents who received free coats at the event, and everyone seemed to be grateful for the community service. “I recently lost my job, I got laid off at Sam’s Club and it’s been a little financially hard. [My daughter] got a coat already, so it will just be for me, I never have money for myself anymore,” said a Thornton Township resident who waited in line with her young daughter and did not wish you provide her name. Elmira Calhoun, a resident of Thornton Township spoke highly of Frank Zuccarelli, Thornton Township supervisor, and everything he does for the community. “Mr. Zucarelli is always doing something meaningful and is very supportive of this Township. If this community needs help for anything, it’s always there. Whether it’s food, clothes, shelter, it’s always there. Nobody has to be hungry and nobody has to be without a warm coat,” said Calhoun. Assessor Berrios Extends Deadline for Senior and Senior Freeze Exemption Applications CHICAGO – Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios announced recently that his office has extended the deadline for the Senior Citizen Exemption and Senior Freeze Exemption renewal applications and new applications for Tax Year 2017. The extended application deadline is March 2, 2018. Any application postmarked by Friday, March 2nd will be on time. The original deadline was February 7th. More than 270,000 applications were mailed in early January to seniors who received the exemptions last year. The Senior Exemption application is part of a booklet that also contains the separate, income-based Senior Freeze Exemption application. Assessor Berrios conceived and helped pass legislation increasing savings from all exemptions It became law for Tax Year 2017. Tax Year 2017 taxes are billed and mailed in 2018. Savings appear as deductions on Second Installment Property Tax Bills which will be issued this summer. Assessor Berrios has again stressed the importance of returning the applications in a timely manner. ”I extended the deadline so all seniors have extra time to return their applications to ensure they receive the expanded exemption savings this year,” Berrios said. “It is also important to remember that under Illinois law, seniors are required to reapply annually for both the Senior and Senior Freeze Exemptions.” To qualify for the Senior Citizen Exemption for Tax Year 2017, the property owner must have: ▪ been born prior to or in the year 1952, ▪ owned the property, or have a lease or contract which makes them responsible for the real estate taxes, and

briefly

▪ used the property as a principal place of residence. Please Note: The new law will increase savings this year for the Senior Exemption from $5,000 to $8,000 in Equalized Assessed Value (EAV). It is important to note that the exemption amount is not the dollar amount by which a tax bill is reduced. EAV is the partial value of a property to which tax rates are applied; it is this figure on which a tax bill is calculated. The Assessor does not set tax rates. The savings for a Senior Citizen Exemption is calculated by multiplying the exemption savings of 8,000 by the local tax rate. To qualify for the Senior Freeze Exemption for Tax Year 2017, taxpayers must have: ▪ been born prior to or in the year 1952, ▪ a total household income of $65,000 or less for [income] Tax Year 2016, ▪ owned the property or had a legal, equitable or leasehold interest in the property on January 1, 2016 and January 1, 2017, ▪ used the property as a principal place of residence as of January 1, 2016 and January 1, 2017, and ▪ been responsible for the payment of 2016 and 2017 property taxes. Please Note: The new law expands eligibility by increasing allowable total household income to $65,000, from the previous limit of $55,000. There is also a new minimum $2,000 EAV deduction for the Senior Freeze, which will help offset increases in assessed value and help ensure that more seniors benefit from the Senior Exemption. “If you don’t qualify for the Senior Freeze Exemption Continued to Page 3

Rush Introduces Resolution Designating the Week of February 12 through February 16, 2018 as ‘‘Black Women’s Heart Health Awareness Week’’ WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.) introduced, H. Res. 722, a resolution supporting the designation of the week of February 12 through February 16, 2018 as “Black Women’s Heart Health Awareness Week” to raise awareness and understanding that heart disease is the number one killer of women and that it disproportionately affects black women. As the country celebrates Black History Month and American Heart Month this February, it is critical to elevate both the cultural significance of the month and the awareness of the health crisis directly impacting black women. “This is an issue that hits close to home, as I lost my beloved wife and best friend, Carolyn, to heart disease last year,” said Rush. “I am personally committed to doing what I can to help educate black women about their health risk and how to prevent this disease from impacting their lives. Black women are leading the way in our country and we must do everything we can to not only promote their successes but protect their hearts.”

Pritzker, Stratton, and Rush Release Statements Regarding Leaked FBI Tape Chicago Tribune recently released a controversial FBI wiretap which showed Illinoisans a new side of J.B. Pritzker, democratic candidate for Illinois governor. On the tapes, you can hear Pritzker talking with then-Governor Rod Blagojevich about who should be nominated to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama, according to an article published by the Chicago Tribune Feb. 6. The phone call was recorded in late 2008 by the FBI during an investigation of Gov. Blagojevich who was later convicted of attempting to sell the Senate seat, according to a Chicago Tribune article published on Aug. 23, 2016. Pritzker suggests Secretary of State Jesse White should take the seat and says he is “the one that’s least offensive.” Pritzker tells the Governor that nominating White “covers you on the African American thing.” Pritzker also stated that White would be a good option for the empty seat because moving him would open up the Secretary of State position which he calls a “key spot” and then goes on to tell the governor “you don’t have to put an African American in that spot.” The recording can be heard on the Chicago Tribune’s website. Pritzker immediately released a public apology. “I’ve been longtime friends with Jesse White for more than 35 years. He is one of our great statesmen and one of the most respected public servants in the history of Illinois. I think now as I did then that he would have made a great United States Senator,” Pritzker stated. “Today, I want to be clear about one thing. I wasn’t my best self on that call, and I apologize for that. I regret some of the things I said and some of the things I didn’t say, but that is not what is in my heart and those are not my values.” Pritzker’s running mate, Juliana Stratton also spoke on his behalf saying, “I joined this campaign because of JB’s values, his record of helping people, and his compassion. All along, JB and I have had countless frank conversations about race, the challenges we face as a state and a country, and the path forward. He is someone who really listens and seeks to understand,” Stratton stated. Congressman Bobby Rush, who previously endorsed Chris Kennedy for governor of Illinois, released a statement on the matter saying, “It was discouraging to hear the despicable conversation between J.B. Pritzker and former Governor Rod Blagojevich, as they discuss leaders in the African-American community in such a dismissive and disrespectful manner. It was particularly jarring to listen to this audio as the country celebrates Black History Month and reflects on the historical and cultural accomplishments of our community.” “To hear these men describe the ways in which they believe they are covered, ‘on the African-American thing’ is simply outrageous. Black people are not ‘things’ nor is the black community a collection of political pawns on a chessboard to be moved around and manipulated by privileged white men. In that regard, former Illinois Senate President Emil Jones Jr. refused to accept his apology and the AfricanAmerican community deserves a more committed and sincere expressive change of heart. This type of rhetoric and thinking has no place in public discourse and should be widely condemned,” Rush stated.

Prairie State College Developing Mobile Training Centers By: Katherine Newman

Prairie State College in Chicago Heights recently received a $938,447 federal grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to help fund the development of mobile training facilities that will bring on-site job training in welding, computer numeric control(CNC), and robotics to companies across the south suburbs. The grant will go towards building two 53 foot semi-trailers which will be outfitted with hands-on and virtual training equipment. One trailer will be outfitted with welding equipment and the other trailer will be CNC and robotics equipment, according to Craig Schmidt, vice president of community and economic development at Prairie State College. “Our intent is to work with local business and instead of the employees coming to the college for training we are actually bringing the training to them. This way, we can do it either before, during, or after their shift depending on what we work out with the company,” said Schmidt. “We would utilize a

classroom at the company site and then when it came time for the hands-on stuff, we would have the trailer there to do the hands-on lab portions.” The school already has programs on campus to train individuals in welding, CNC, and robotics. With this grant, they will be able to travel to local businesses, schools, and communities to increase interest in the programs and offer more accessible opportunities for training. “Our initial intent is to bring this training to companies to up-skill the current employees, but our hope is to go to some of our local communities where resources are scarce so we can provide training in the hopes of helping individuals to earn a skill so they can get a job,” said Schmidt. “Also, to work with our local high school and middle schools to start getting them interested in the manufacturing industry.” Schmidt hopes to have the trailers completed and ready for trainees this fall. He said they are planning to train about 300 people in the first two years of operation based on commitments they received, while putting the grant together, from interested companies.

because you exceed the income level, this does not mean you will not be eligible for the Senior Exemption,” Berrios explained. “The Senior Exemption has no income restrictions and I’m concerned that seniors might discard the entire booklet and not receive the Senior Exemption savings to which they are entitled.” Seniors receiving the Senior Citizen Exemption automatically receive the Homeowner Exemption. Seniors receiving the Senior Freeze Exemption automatically receive both the Homeowner and Senior Citizen Exemptions. Eligible seniors, who have never applied for the Senior and/or Senior Freeze Exemptions in

the past, may visit the Assessor’s web site at www. cookcountyassessor.com and download an application or contact the Assessor’s Office at 312-443-7550 and request a form be mailed to them. Applications for the Homeowner Exemption and additional exemptions administered by the Assessor’s Office will also be made available on line. “One of the top concerns I hear through our Community Outreach Program is that seniors are struggling to make ends meet,” Berrios said. “I will continue to work for greater tax relief for seniors to ensure they can stay in their homes without worrying about the affordability of their property taxes.”

More Students are Going to Grad School: How are They Paying for It? (StatePoint) Career aspirations are driving more students to graduate school these days, and nearly two thirds believe an advanced degree is the new minimum standard level of education for any professional occupation. According to “How America Pays for Graduate School,” the new national study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, an independent global market research company, nearly all grad students (95 percent) said an advanced degree is necessary to enter, advance, accelerate or remain competitive in their chosen career. Cost is less of a factor in the enrollment decision than it is at the undergraduate level, as more than eight in 10 surveyed based their enrollment decision on a school’s academic offerings, prestige, location, campus culture, or other personal consideration. However, eight in 10 grad students said they took more responsibility for paying-for-school decisions than they had for their undergraduate studies. “It is human nature to plan for what you value, and that includes graduate school. Today’s students see graduate school as their ticket to a successful and prosperous career, and most have a plan to pay for their advanced degree before they enroll,” says

Raymond J. Quinlan, chairman and CEO, Sallie Mae. “That planning pays off: the overwhelming majority are confident in the financial decisions they’ve made about how to pay for their graduate education.” How much did they pay? Students spent an average of $24,812 on grad school in academic

www.thechicagocitizen.com

year 2016-17, and more than three-fourths of them (77 percent) paid for it, at least in part, by borrowing. Funds borrowed by students covered more than half of the cost (53 percent), while money students earned, including income and savings, paid for 24 percent. Grants, fellowships, scholarships, and tuition waivers accounted for 15 percent, while eight percent of grad school costs came from funds borrowed or contributed by parents or others. The study also reveals that scholarships and grants are less available for grad students than for undergrads, accounting for just 15 percent of grad school costs. In response, Sallie Mae announced a new Bridging the Dream Scholarship for Graduate Students that will award four $20,000 scholarships in 2018. Students may apply by Feb. 14 by visiting SallieMae.com/BridgingtheDreamGrad. To view the complete report, visit SallieMae. com/HowAmericaPaysGrad and join the conversation using #HowGradsPay. As a graduate degree continues to become the educational norm, students will continue to plan and find creative ways to meet the cost.

How to inspire your teen to expand their horizons and find their passion (BPT) - With mounting pressures and expectations, the high school years can feel overwhelming - for students and parents alike. Teens grapple with questions like: Which colleges should I apply to? What should I choose as a major? What do I really want to do with my life? What if I don’t have a clue? As a parent you naturally want to give advice and steer them in the right direction, but you also know it’s a tricky balance. It’s their life, after all, as they’ll often remind you. So how can you help? Encourage them to explore different interests, with no strings attached. Look for activities beyond the usual choices. Research extracurricular programs at your school, in your community, even overseas so they can see the breadth of what’s out there. Expose them to a range of possibilities and see what they pick. Does your teen already have a clear focus? Look for innovative programs that allow them to dig even deeper in real-world settings. Or maybe your son or daughter is shy or stuck in a rut and needs a gentle nudge to try something new? It’s amazing how a change of scenery can inspire students and tap hidden talents. Over time they’ll gravitate toward one thing or another, and the journey will be rich with selfdiscovery. From local to global, there are many valuable paths that help spark new interests while building self-knowledge, confidence and 21st century skills along the way. Global clubs and activities spark interest in the world at largeMost high schools offer a range of extracurricular opportunities to get involved in a topic of interest or try out something new, from sports and theater to robotics and debate. Many offer programs with an international theme as well. After-school language clubs provide a chance to practice conversational skills in a relaxed environment while joining in cooking and other cultural activities. And bonding with other language enthusiasts inspires many to want to travel to experience different cultures first-hand! Larger high schools offer more languages, from French, Spanish and German to Mandarin, Arabic and Japanese, while teens with more limited offerings can often find regional programs a bus ride away.

Model UN is another valuable program that teaches students about the world around them, and builds confidence as well as leadership and communication skills. A new activity picked up on a whim may turn into a lifetime source of joy or even a career. If options are limited at school, branch out. Urge your teen to get involved in the local community, meet new people, and bond with others who share similar interests. They’ll see what’s out there in the bigger world while demonstrating to colleges and employers that they’re engaged beyond the standard classroom requirements. Service programs help teens gain valuable perspectiveWhen teens offer their time and talent to nonprofits and worthy causes, they gain more than just real-world experience for their college resumes. They gain maturity, perspective, practical skills and a greater appreciation for what they’ve got. Volunteering can be customized to one’s own interests, whether it means walking dogs at an animal shelter or building a website for an environmental T:9.5” group. Adventurous students can take it one step further by S:9.5”

participating in service programs abroad. Whether working to raise social awareness, lending a hand with environmental and conservation project, or mentoring underprivileged youth, teens grow exponentially during a summer far away from their usual routine. Study abroad transforms the way a teen looks at fields of study - and lifeStudying abroad is not just for college. More and more high school students are making the leap overseas for summer programs or for a semester or gap year. As many students, parents and guidance counselors have discovered, this is an opportune time to develop valuable lifelong skills, learn a new language and discover career interests in a way that is not possible in an everyday classroom environment. Perhaps the ultimate opportunity for personal growth, studying abroad also expands communication skills and helps students understand different cultures and ways of living. Not sure study abroad has crossed your teen’s mind? Surf the web together for resources and get on mailing lists for brochures. CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange), a nonprofit that operates high school study abroad programs in more than 30 global destinations, is a good place to start. Transported to a world far different from their own, teens find themselves fully immersed in a new topic and a foreign culture. Programs range from three weeks in the summer to a full semester or academic year. Planning ahead is key. By involving a teacher or counselor in the discussion early on, you’ll ensure a smooth transition to and from the study abroad experience. It also gives you more time to plan finances and research scholarships to make the opportunity possible. Do your research sooner rather than later: Organizations like CIEE offer scholarships based on merit and financial considerations, but be sure to check the application deadlines so you don’t miss out. To learn more about CIEE’s Global Navigator High School Study Abroad program and available scholarships, visit ciee.org/ globalnavigators.

New book promotes spiritual growth and righteous living

TAMPA, Fla. — While compiling lessons he taught his five children over the years, Walter Gormley decided that the lessons are things everyone should know and experience. His new spirituality book, “Return: The Way of Perfect Love” (published by Balboa Press), lists all the lessons he taught his children over the years. A guide to spiritual growth and righteous living, Gormley’s book is intended to be a path for everyone to “return to their birthright: the perfect love of the Almighty God and each other.” Promoting inclusivity, “Return” puts the focus on the idea that the life one leads is proof of the beliefs they hold and imparts teachings from a variety of religions. “Our conflicts over religion, politics, race, culture, and morality persist and there seems to be no solution,” Gormley says. “The problems continue despite growing evidence that we can all trace our ancestry back to a common source. When we begin to perceive each other by those things that we have in common: not merely biologically, but in our very essence---our souls--- we open the doors to respectful interaction.”

For nearly half a century, Gormley devoted his life to seeking, learning, and living truth. His research and participation has taken him through several religious denominations. While none had everything, each had something. Through studying, practicing, and reaching beyond the “miresome” comfort of most religions, he has been able to draw out the most important themes and share them with his five children. He continues to do so near Tampa, Florida.

ADVERSARIAL AWARENESS

The prophet writer of Isaiah shared that just as the rain and snow fulfill the purpose for which each is sent, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. Likewise, our words do not return to us void and these same words are filled with the power to accomplish what we speak. So whether we realize it or not, we never really outperform our conversation. If we want to change our lives, we have to change the way we think of ourselves and if we want to change the way we think of ourselves, we need to change the words we say to ourselves. Life is already full of issues and challenges. Why add to them by discouraging yourself every day with negative selftalk? Beneath the surface, each of us has an inner voice on a loud speaker trying to convince us of something about ourselves. What does your self-talk sound like and what is it saying to you? Is it a blessing to you? Do you encourage you? Alternatively, do you curse and criticize yourself ? Become your own encourager, your own cheerleader. Every time you do a good job, do not just let it pass; give yourself a compliment. Every time you choose discipline over indulgence, encourage yourself; recognize how much you are helping you. When you make a mistake, learn from it and improve but do not beat yourself up and relive the mistake without getting the lesson. The help, boost, and acceptance you have been looking for might be found in the things you say to yourself! Speak life, especially to yourself!
