Residents Receive Free Health Screenings at Community Wellness Day Continued from Page 1 By: Katherine Newman

The Village of Dolton recently hosted a Community Wellness Day to provide residents with free health screenings for high blood pressure and diabetes, one-on-one pharmacy consultations, and wellness activities. This is the beginning of many free health events in Dolton, according to the Mayor of the Village of Dolton, Riley Rogers. “We have an aging population in the City of Dolton and what we want to do is assist these residents, who in some cases can’t afford healthcare, through trying to lead them in the right direction in regards to making sure they get regular check-ups. So, today we thought we could start the year off with the wellness program and we want to continue this throughout the year and future years to come,” said Rogers. There were several vendors who set up tables at Community Wellness Day to provide information about free and affordable healthcare for all ages, not just seniors. “We reached out to a number of vendors that said they had no problem with participating. This is just a smaller fashion of what we are planning to do in the future. We are looking for those vendors that will provide these services at no cost to our residents,” said Rogers. ST Medical Group was one of the vendors at Community Wellness Day. Jadwiga Stoklosa ran the table where attendees

could sit and have their health questions answered by medical professionals and participate in an overall wellness screening. “If you come to our table and we screen you and the results come right away. We check blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol, and we check mental status,” said Stoklosa. “Then we make recommendations. We send some people home, sometimes they need a home health agency, sometimes they need to go to the hospital, sometimes we will tell them to go see a primary care physician once a month.” Aside from the free health screenings, Community Wellness Day offered residents the chance to get out of the house and socialize during the cold winter months. Earlene Branch, a resident of Dolton, believes the opportunity to get out of the house and socialize is just as important as the free health screenings. “I am so thankful that they are doing this because I see so many people that are obese and people who sit around in their house all the time and don’t go out to mingle with others and that leads to other illnesses, so I think this is a very good health event and I think they should do this more,” said Branch. Mayor Rogers was walking around at the event because he believes in the importance of keeping the community healthy, but also values engaging with his constituents. “it’s important to maintain a dialogue with our residents,” he said. Upcoming Women’s History Month Performance Highlights Harriet Tubman By: Katherine Newman

South Suburban College has put together a free Woman’s History Month performance of The Life and Times of Harriet Tubman staring Cynthia Maddox. The performance will take place on March 1st at 11 a.m. in the Kindig Performing Arts Center, 15800 S. State St., South Holland. Patrice Burton, dean of student services at South Suburban College (SSC), was involved with planning the event. The performance will provide the historical story of Harriet Tubman and showcase the many roles she played during the American Civil War, according to Burton, “If we look at it from what she accomplished at the time she was a true ‘shero’. Not a hero a ‘shero’ because a lot of people don’t realize what all she did. Most people just know about Harriet Tubman and the underground railroad and that’s it, but she was so much more,” said Burton. Maddox is a Chicago actress, director, vocalist,

playwright, and producer who has performed all over the Midwest and Canada. For thirty years Maddox has been portraying a wide range of African American ‘sheroes’ in her performances, according to South Suburban College. Burton booked Maddox to come and give her Harriet Tubman performance because she believed her one-woman act was enlightening and would benefit the students and community. “All we wanted to do was chose a strong woman and I think both black, white, and latino people can get from this women a source of strength because she was an abolitionist, she was a humanitarian, she was an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War, she was an educator and regardless of her color I think that we as Americans need to know about as many ‘sheroes’ as we can,” said Burton. The upcoming performance is free and open to the public. For more information visit ssc.edu to

Black HIV Infections Cut Almost In Half In Illinois SPRINGFIELD – From 2000 to 2015, the rate of HIV infection among blacks decreased by 46 percent. However, as new HIV infections in Illinois plateaued in 2015, for every 100,000 black people in the state, 40 were still diagnosed with HIV (compared to 3.6 per 100,000 among whites) and more troubling, among young black gay men. Of the 224 deaths from HIV/ AIDS in Illinois in 2015, 140 were among blacks. > “While we have made great strides in reducing HIV infection in Illinois, African Americans continue to be disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. “Echoing this year’s theme, ‘Stay the Course, the Fight is Not Over!’ Illinois will continue working with communities around the state to eliminate these disparities and encourage people to get educated, get involved, get tested, and get treated.” In response to the burden of HIV among Illinois’ black communities, IDPH is partnering in Getting To Zero, Illinois’ framework to eliminate HIV in Illinois. Cook County Board Approves Four Tax Incentives Designed to Support Economic Growth Cook County Commissioners recently approved four proposals from President Toni Preckwinkle’s Bureau of Economic Development (BED) that will provide tax incentives to businesses in Cook County. The incentives, which will either create new or save existing jobs, were approved in the following communities: Bridgeview (two), Dolton and Wheeling. As a result of redevelopment activities, these incentives should support the creation of an estimated 43 new private sector full-time jobs, retain an estimated 86 full-time jobs and support 40 construction jobs. “The companies receiving these incentives have demonstrated their commitment to our communities and residents,” Preckwinkle said. “I’m pleased that we are able to use our tax incentive tools to either keep or expand businesses in Cook County.”

President Preckwinkle Urges Washington to Change Policy on ICE Arrests in Courthouses

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle recently called on the Trump administration and members of Congress to advocate against civil immigration arrests in courthouses, which pose a threat to public safety. Last month, the Trump administration issued new guidance directing immigration officers to make civil arrests in courthouses and claimed it would improve public safety. And recently, a recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) protections was wrongfully detained at the Cook County courthouse in Skokie, Illinoiswhen he appeared for a minor traffic violation. “I was disheartened last week to see the temporary and wrongful detention of a DREAMer — a rule-abiding beneficiary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals order,” Preckwinkle said. “Christian Gomez Garcia, who came to the U.S. as a small child nearly 25 years ago and has been a DACA recipient since 2012, was subjected to detention that began with an arrest at the Skokie courthouse.” Such detentions intimidate immigrants from engaging with the criminal justice system, which Cook County has an obligation to maintain for the benefit of all residents. By increasing civil immigration enforcement in courthouses, the Trump administration could discourage immigrants from cooperating as witnesses, appearing for trial or engaging with local law enforcement. “Furthermore, I am concerned that the Trump administration’s new shift in policy — to prioritize courthouse arrests — could threaten public safety by discouraging individuals from engaging with the criminal justice system, from serving as witnesses to showing up, as did Christian, to a court date for a minor traffic violation,” Preckwinkle said. “We are all safer when everyone in Cook County feels comfortable using our court system and believes in justice.”

IEMA Encourages People to Prepare for Earthquakes

Some of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in North America rocked the mostly rural central U.S. between December 1811 and February 1812, including parts of southern Illinois. The strongest earthquakes in this series were estimated to be around magnitude 8.0, and were felt as far away as the East Coast. Currently, this multi-state region is heavily populated and highly developed. A similar earthquake now would cause widespread devastation to buildings, utilities, roads, bridges and other infrastructure, as well as result in many injuries and deaths. Recognizing the earthquake risk in Illinois, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) and local emergency management agencies will promote earthquake preparedness throughout February. “In addition to the New Madrid Seismic Zone, where the 1811-12 quakes occurred, southern Illinois is also adjacent to the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone,” said IEMA Interim Director Jennifer Ricker. “We can’t predict when the next devastating earthquake in this region will happen, but we can help people learn how to protect themselves and reduce damage to their homes.” Ricker said people need to remember to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” when they feel the ground shaking: “Drop” down to the floor, take “Cover” under a sturdy desk, table or other furniture, and “Hold On” to the furniture item and be prepared to move with it until the shaking ends.

When it comes to women educators, Charlotte Forten Grimké and Fanny Marion Jackson Coppin stand out as distinguished Black figures in African American history. Currently, two ebooks highlighting the live’s of both women, can now be purchased online. Written by author L.A. Johnson, a former African American educator herself, the book, “Miss Forten of Philadelphia: Awesome Black Female Educator,” highlights the life of Charlotte Forten Grimké, the first Black teacher hired to teach white students in the public schools of Salem Massachusetts. Forten Grimké was an AfricanAmerican anti-slavery activist, poet and educator. Born free into a wealthy and socially prominent Black family, she, as were her parents and grandparents, was active in the antislavery movement and lived to see the success of that movement when slaves living in America were emancipated, according to a description of the book listed on Amazon.com. The book highlights her early childhood, her education, and her teaching experiences on the South Carolina Sea Islands. From slave, to world class teacher, to namesake of a Maryland State University, Johnson’s other book entitled, “Fanny Marion Jackson Coppin: First Black Female Principal,” tells the story of Fanny Marion Jackson Coppin, the first Black female principal. Both books can be purchased on www.amazon. com. Johnson, who retired from the Los Angeles Fanny Jackson Coppin School District with 26 years of teaching service credit, thought it was important to remember the significant achievements of educators like Forten Grimké and Jackson Coppin. “These two women are significant role models,” she said. “Especially Fanny Coppin who overcame seemingly impossible obstacles.” “Additionally, they paved the way for the achievements Black Americans have been able to make today. Had it not been for Charlotte Forten’s participation in The Port Royal Experiment which led to the conclusion that Black children were not only able, but eager to learn, God only knows what may have happened,” she said. “African American women who have made significant sacrifices and achievements for the common good, should unquestionably be remembered,” she stated. Johnson, who earned an A.A. from Fresno City College, a B.A. from Fresno State and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Educational Administration from Purdue

University, said, “As a graduate student at Purdue University, I found that while there were numerous books written about Black male heroes, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, George Washington Carver, etc. there was a disturbing lack of books written about our Black female heroes.” Hence, Johnson added, she was, “motivated to fill that void.” Both books, “Miss Forten of Philadelphia: Awesome Black Female Educator,” and “Fanny Marion Jackson Coppin: First Black Female Principal,” respectively, comprise book 1 and 2 in Johnson’s Forget Me Not Series. She is currently working on a third book for the series. She said most of her research was done while still a student at Purdue. “I still have the interlibrary loan requests, many of which were returned unfilled,” she added. “But relying on books and magazine articles that I was able to obtain, I began the process of writing. My work was put on hold when I began teaching,” she said, “But, after I retired, I revived my interest and returned to my unfinished project.” Johnson, a self-published author, added the process of self-publishing is creating additional opportunities for more writers, thus more stories are being told. “If you have a story to tell and no money or influence, there are avenues available to put your story in print and share it with anyone willing to read it,” she said.

Activist Kina Collins leaves Pritzker campaign, joins Sameena Mustafa for Congress CHICAGO – On the day that tapes were released of Democratic gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker speaking about African American leaders, Kina Collins announced her resignation from his campaign. “Character,” she explained, “is not what you do when the whole world is watching, character is what you do when no one is watching.” Days later, Collins joined the campaign of progressive Democrat Sameena Mustafa, who is challenging Congressman Mike Quigley in the Democratic Primary in the 5th Congressional district. “We don’t have to compromise on the leaders we elect,” Collins said of her choice to join Mustafa’s campaign. “Sameena is a leader who knows the community, has proven

her commitment to progressive values, and she’s challenging one of the most conservative Democrats in Congress. Democrats are demanding principled leadership in Congress, and I’m proud to work with Sameena and her grassroots campaign.” Collins is the CEO and founder of the Chicago Neighborhood Alliance which focuses on gun violence, criminal justice reform, civic engagement, diversity and inclusion, and women’s rights. “I could not be prouder to have Kina join this campaign,” Mustafa said. “Kina is the kind of leader that is transforming the city and helping bring people together to demand real change in our communities and in their elected leaders.” Mustafa, long involved in the local

business, arts, and nonprofit communities, has been running a robust progressive campaign against Mike Quigley. Mustafa’s campaign has boosted in recent weeks by endorsements from local and national progressive organizations, IVI-IPO and Americans for Democratic Action, but she says it’s the support of activists like Collins that show the most momentum. “This campaign is about making real change by bringing people together, and I can’t think of anyone who has embodied that spirit more than Kina. That’s why we’re going to win, because people want leaders who will push for bold solutions, not make excuses for Republican-lite policy.” The Democratic Primary is five weeks away, on March 20th.

Rent vs. own: Which is right for you? (BPT) - If you’re thinking of buying your first home, you’ve probably wrestled with the decision to rent or own your home - and for good reason. Owning a home is a big commitment. With it comes a lot of responsibility and a long-term financial relationship. But which is right for you? To answer that, let’s lean into the facts. The improving housing market Good news! Since the depths of the recession, the housing market has made a heroic comeback. That can be attributed to a number of factors, including a drop in unemployment and a stronger economy. But as the housing market has recovered, it has experienced some growing pains. With a sharp increase

in demand, housing supplies are being strained. This means, among other things, that prices are going up. For families and individuals still recovering financially, finding affordable housing options can be difficult. This applies to home sales and rentals.

Making the decision With rental and sales markets heading toward record highs, the decision falls back to what is best for you. Specifically, what is financially feasible. Let’s look at the basic numbers. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median gross rent

paid from 2012 to 2016 was $949 monthly. Compare that with the median selected monthly owner costs with a mortgage, which was $1,491 over the same time period. Then there are utilities. The median monthly electricity cost for renters in 2015 was $82, with owners paying $117. For piped gas, the median amount renters pay monthly is $42, while owners pay $58. For renters, it is wise to carry renter’s insurance. Some landlords will also charge maintenance and other fees. Utility costs will also vary depending on the quality of the structure and materials used as well as size of the rental space. Homeowners will pay property taxes, insurance and an estimated $500 annually for routine maintenance, according to the Census Bureau. The benefits of homeownership At a glance, it may seem that renting is the lower cost option. But there are certain benefits to homeownership that may offset the additional regular costs. According to the Tax Policy Center, the primary benefit

to owning a home is imputed rental income. Simply put, making a monthly payment on a home that you own is like paying rent to yourself. While that money is not taxed, it comes with another benefit potential tax deductions. When you file your federal taxes, you may be able to deduct a portion of the mortgage interest you pay. Talk to a tax professional for more information on the expenses you can deduct and the limits for those deductions. Beyond the numbers Homeownership provides a variety of benefits beyond the numbers. For many people, a home is the largest investment they will ever make. The upgrades, work and care put into the home that you own can add value to your investment. It also adds a sense of pride knowing that it is yours. “Having a place to call your own, a place to return to at the end of the day, makes life better,” said Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance, Inc. President Eric Hamilton. “You can see it from the moment they make the decision - that sense of pride. It’s a lifechanging event and a memory that will last a lifetime.” Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance, Inc., 500 Alcoa Trail, Maryville, TN 37804, 865380-3000, NMLS #1561, (http://www. nmlsconsumeraccess. org/), AZ Lic. #BK0902616, Loans made or arranged pursuant to a California Finance Lenders Law license, GA Residential Mortgage (Lic. #6911), Illinois Residential Mortgage Licensee, Licensed by the NH Banking Department, MT Lic. #1561, Licensed by PA Dept. of Banking.

• Check it off. There is nothing more satis fying than getting important things done except when you physically cross it off your list. Be sure to give yourself some sort of visual satisfaction for completed tasks. This should be done on both your digitized and paperbased todo lists.

• Double up. The best way to stay on top of important items is to double up use digital technology in tandem with tradition al paper to capture important notes, dates and more. Keep each book club meeting in your phone, but write down the actual books, the members’ names and your thoughts in your planner.

• Celebrate successes. Take time to review your progress and see what you have accomplished. It will give you a sense of control and completion and can motivate you to keep going. Celebrate successes as they occur, but don’t get dis heartened if something on your todo list carries over to the next day, week or month. Staying motivated will help you be more productive and be a great reminder of how well your system is working!

• Personalize it. The easiest way to stay organized is by having a planning system that reflects your personality. Watch your self surpass your goals by using tools that fit your style, like colorcoding, symbols or stickers. Remember that not all personal ization has to be for efficiency purposes. Patterned tape, fun designs and motivat ing quotes can be a great way to keep you committed and make your planner a reflection of yourself.
