LYNWOOD MAYOR IS SEEKING RE-ELECTION
Jada Curry, Mayor of the Village of Lynwood, is seeking a second term as mayor. During her first term, Curry said she has learned a lot and grown a lot. She described it as a very interesting four years. She had to learn everything from scratch, because when she first took office, there were no files on the computers.

SIMMONS LAW PROMOTES RECRUITMENT FOR EDUCATORS AND CHILDCARE PROVIDERS IN ILLINOIS
SPRINGFIELD – To respond to the increasing demand for teachers and daycare providers across Illinois, State Senator Mike Simmons’ initiative to strengthen workforce recruitment in Illinois was signed into law.
“This is a step toward providing quality education and childcare for Illinois families to alleviate the burden many in our communities are facing,” said Simmons (D-Chicago). “With this law, we will collect feedback from communities across Illinois about their specific needs and how we can address them, ensuring families and children are being taken care of by the best.”
Under the new law, House Bill 814, the existing State Comprehensive Day Care Plan survey of day care facilities will include feedback from groups and individuals with relevant expertise and lived experiences with the goal of promoting workforce recruitment and retention for educators and childcare providers.
“This is about listening to the needs of everyone, ensuring we understand the specific challenges and needs of our workforce and the communities they serve,” said Simmons. “As we work together, we can uplift struggling providers and find more efficient ways to address the employment shortages we currently face.”
House Bill 814 was signed into law in December.
REP. MANLEY TOURS JOLIET TERRACE INTERMEDIATE & BEHAVIORAL CARE
JOLIET, Ill. – Mental health is among State Rep. Natalie Manley’s, (D-Joliet), top legislative priorities. Rep. Manley recently toured Joliet Terrace, an intermediate care center that provides custodial care to individuals who cannot care for themselves due to chronic mental health issues. Tours to facilities like Joliet Terrace provide legislators with the on-the-ground perspective needed to craft legislation that effectively meets the State’s healthcare needs.
Rep. Manley and Terrace staff discussed the center’s operations, residents, and the continuing need for legislative action on mental healthcare.
Joliet Terrace houses around 130 residents, with most having been hospitalized before being discharged to the facility. Many residents have previously experienced homelessness. Residents at Terrace receive regular medical and psychiatric care, and are allowed tailored meal preferences.
Joliet Terrace is bracing for a significant loss of funding following an administrative rule change that took place in October. The rule altered a formula that determines Terrace’s funding based on the number of hours a certain type of care each resident receives. Joliet Terrace also cited the need for change in the rules that would enable them to hire nurses with psychiatric skills. Manley emphasized the importance of mental healthcare and applauded Joliet Terrace.
“As a society, we have only just started down the path of truly understanding diseases of the brain,” Manley said. “We still have a lot of work to do, but Joliet Terrace is integrating into their practices the latest understandings of mental health to provide the best care that they can. I’d like to thank Joliet Terrace for allowing me to see the work that they’re doing.”

Curry and her administration have been able to successfully staff all of the departments within the Village and take a hard look at the Village’s financials. This included determining which items needed to be focused on first, then building out a strategic plan to get the Village completely out of debt over an extended period of time.
There has also been a focus on economic development in the Village of Lynwood. Dollar General and Dunkin Donuts now have locations there, as well as a dispensary, a car wash and a grocery store. Having a grocery store in the community has been beneficial to the residents. An equestrian university is also coming.
her first term, she said she has gotten more done than her predecessor, who was in office for 16 years. She said serving as mayor for a Village like Lynwood, a person has to prepare for the Village’s future.
“I think the residents see that I have a heart for Lynwood. I have a heart for them. They see evidence of my work through the businesses that have come to town. They see evidence of my work through the community events. They see evidence of my work through public safety,” she said.
“I think the residents see that I have a heart for Lynwood. I have a heart for them. They see evidence of my work through the businesses that have come to town. They see evidence of my work through the community events. They see evidence of my work through public safety,” she said.
“We’ve been working very hard to make sure that as we focus on all of the things that we need to fix, that we get the Village ready for the future, as well,” she said.
Curry said the future of Lynwood looks very bright. She said she sees Lynwood as a place where there are businesses that service the residents. Homes continue to be built in the Village, which means there are more families coming into town, as well as a change in culture and in the school system, in a good and positive way. She said she will continue to work toward financial stability and economic development for the Village and make sure the community stays connected.
Curry said she believes she has done the work and the residents should vote to re-elect her. Within
When it comes to public safety, the Village of Lynwood has 24-hour staffing in its Fire Department and more police officers on the street, as well as ambulances to service the residents in the Village, as well as in neighboring communities.
Curry has received good feedback from the residents. She said a lot of them were excited to have a new mayor come into office. She said she also has been able to win over a significant amount of the residents who loved the former mayor. She said the residents love the community connections, through movies in the park and concerts in the park. Last year, Lynwood Fest was expanded with more than 2,000 people and a change of venue to accommodate the amount of people.
Curry said the residents are excited about the future and what is to come. She said she is honored to serve the Village of Lynwood as Mayor and she is looking forward to growing and getting more accomplished in her second term.

ATTORNEY GENERAL RAOUL AND
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE SUE REALPAGE
AND NATION’S LARGEST LANDLORDS FOR PRICING SCHEME
Chicago – Attorney General Kwame Raoul and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), with nine attorneys general, filed a civil antitrust lawsuit against RealPage Inc. (RealPage) and five of the nation’s largest landlords for their unlawful scheme to decrease competition among landlords in apartment pricing, and against RealPage for its unlawful scheme to monopolize the market for commercial revenue management software that landlords use to price apartments.
The amended lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina, alleges that the conduct of RealPage, along with landlords Camden Property Trust, Cushman & Wakefield Inc. and Pinnacle Property Management Services LLC, Greystar Real Estate Partners LLC, Blackstone’s Livcor LLC, and Willow Bridge Property Company LLC deprives renters of the benefits of competition on apartment leasing terms and harms millions of Americans.
“Access to affordable housing is a basic human right. It is unacceptable that the people of Illinois should have
to pay higher rental rates because a scheme to utilize new technology and break a long-standing law has stacked the odds against them,” said Raoul. “My office will continue to enforce the antitrust laws to protect competition that will give Illinois renters housing options that best meet their needs.”
The complaint alleges that RealPage contracts with competing landlords who actively participated in a scheme to set rental pricing using one another’s competitively sensitive information through common pricing algorithms. The landlords allegedly agreed to share with RealPage nonpublic information about their apartment rental rates and other lease terms to train and run RealPage’s algorithmic pricing software. This software then generates recommendations, including on apartment rental pricing and other terms, for participating landlords based on their and their rivals’ competitively sensitive information.

Groundbreaking NYU Langone Health Study Published in Nature Medicine
A recent study from NYU Langone Health, published in Nature Medicine, reveals that the risk of developing dementia after the age of 55 is significantly higher than previously suggested by earlier research. These new findings reinforce that US dementia cases will double—reaching 1 million—by 2060 adding longstanding messages from the Alzheimer’s Association about the increasing risk and prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. While different studies may yield varying results based on methodology or population, all, including the Alzheimer’s Association’s Facts and Figures report, point to an escalating risk and prevalence of dementia in the coming years and decades.
Solopreneurs, fitness instructors, food trucks and other businesses are all welcome to apply. “New in 2025, the Forest Preserves are looking for food truck or cart concessionaires to sell items at Camp Bullfrog Lake. We’re also excited to provide more opportunities to small culinary and business owners interested in the variety of contract opportunities including multi-year contracts, which are available as part of the new concessions program,” Dailey says.

The Alzheimer’s Association emphasizes the urgent need to address the global Alzheimer’s crisis, which is expected to impact an increasing number of individuals both in the U.S. and worldwide. This challenge is particularly pressing for highrisk groups—such as Black Americans, Hispanic Americans, and women—who have historically been underrepresented in research. The latest study further affirms the heightened urgency and risk these groups face.

allege that in a free market, these landlords would otherwise compete independently to attract renters based on pricing, discounts, concessions, lease terms and other dimensions of apartment leasing. The lawsuit also alleges RealPage uses this scheme and its substantial data trove to maintain a monopoly in the market for commercial revenue management software. The complaint seeks to end the illegal conduct and restore competition for the benefit of renters in Illinois and across the country.
Along with using RealPage’s anticompetitive pricing algorithms, the landlords allegedly
coordinated through a variety of means, including:
Directly communicating with competitors’ senior managers about rents, occupancy and other competitively sensitive topics.
Regularly conducting “call arounds.”
Participating in “user groups” hosted by RealPage.
Sharing information with competitors about parameters in RealPage’s software.
Attorney General Raoul and the DOJ filed the lawsuit with attorneys general of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee and Washington.
On a positive note, we are witnessing a transformative period in Alzheimer’s disease treatment. Approved therapies now exist that can slow the progression of early-stage Alzheimer’s, and additional treatments are in development. Furthermore, advancements in detection and diagnosis are offering new opportunities for earlier intervention, while ongoing research continues to enhance our understanding of risk reduction for Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
The Alzheimer’s Association offers the following 10 Healthy Habits for Your Brain to help individuals maintain cognitive health as they age:
• Engage in regular physical activity.
• Continuously learn new things and keep the brain engaged.
• Prioritize a nutritious diet, emphasizing vegetables, lean meats, and foods low in fat.
• Protect against head injury.
• Maintain heart health by controlling blood pressure, managing diabetes, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking.
Despite broad recommendations for maintaining brain health, many individuals seek more specific guidance on reducing their risk of Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline. In response, the Alzheimer’s Association is leading the U.S. POINTER Study—a two-year clinical trial aimed at evaluating whether lifestyle interventions targeting multiple risk factors can protect cognitive function in older adults at increased risk of cognitive decline. The U.S. POINTER Study is the first of its kind to involve a large, diverse sample of Americans, and results are expected to be presented at the 2025 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference in Toronto.
The Need for Continued Research
As the population ages, the number of individuals affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias is expected to rise dramatically in the coming years. To confront this looming crisis, sustained investment in research is essential. The Alzheimer’s Association is leading efforts to better understand the causes of the disease, improve early detection and diagnosis (including blood tests), develop more effective treatments—including combination therapies—and identify proven strategies for risk reduction and eventual prevention.
We are in a new era of Alzheimer’s treatment, but many questions remain. The only way to answer these questions is through continued research, and the Alzheimer’s Association is committed to driving these efforts forward.

Nicor Gas celebrates its first renewable natural gas interconnection
NAPERVILLE, Ill., PRNewswire -- Nicor Gas celebrated the opening of its first renewable natural gas (RNG) interconnection with Air Liquide’s largest RNG facility in the world. The plant converts biogas from a nearby landfill into energy through the utility’s first-ever RNG interconnection. To mark this historic moment in Illinois’s clean energy future, the companies hosted an official ribbon cutting ceremony, attended by company leaders, local and national elected officials and community partners.
“This interconnection is a significant step forward for Nicor Gas and Southern Company Gas on the path to a sustainable energy future for Illinois and facilitating economy-wide carbon reductions while fueling resiliency, energy security and the growth of the clean energy economy,” said Wendell Dallas, president and CEO of Nicor Gas.
RNG interconnection marks a milestone for Nicor Gas, Southern Company Gas on the path to a sustainable energy future.
The interconnection was established under Nicor Gas’ Renewable Gas Interconnection Pilot Program approved by the Illinois Commerce Commission in 2021. This is the utility’s first-ever interconnection of a biogas upgrading plant to the Nicor Gas delivery system, which went live June 12, 2024.
Located in Rockford, Illinois, Air Liquide’s state-of-the-art plant uses biogas from the
adjacent Winnebago Landfill operated by Waste Connections, Inc. to create RNG. The plant is projected to produce approximately 1.3 million Metric Million British thermal units (MMBtu) per year, which is the estimated equivalent to replacing natural gas with RNG in 12,000 homes annually.
RNG is a low-carbon intensity fuel produced from biogas that is derived from organic waste sources such as household waste in landfills, wastewater treatment processes and agriculture. As organic waste decomposes, it produces biogas – a mixture of primarily methane and carbon dioxide. Instead of allowing it to be flared into the atmosphere, Air Liquide’s Winnebago facility captures it at the landfill and purifies it into a pipeline-quality gas that is interchangeable with geologic natural gas. In some cases, RNG is one of the only energy sources that can have a negative carbon intensity on a lifecycle basis, depending on the feedstock.
Nicor Gas’ pipeline infrastructure is a vital component in enabling reduced emissions for those entities who are purchasing and/or retiring the environmental attributes and delivering energy to end users, as well as encouraging RNG development. The company will receive and retire 13,900 MMbtu annually of environmental attributes associated with this project, contributing directly to Nicor Gas’ reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its operations.

Get Your House In Order
It’s better to have it, and not need it, than to need it and not have it.” We have heard this saying, however; few of us heed it. It is my intention and the purpose of this column to help more people to become familiar with the various processes and instruments of direction to preserve their assets and protect their general welfare.
Have you ever considered who would make medical decisions for you if you became incapacitated? If you are married, with few exceptions, automatically your spouse can make medical decisions for you, unless you have a court appointed guardian. However, for those without spouses it is not so clear who makes medical decisions for you. There is an order of medical decision makers for the unmarried as follows: any adult child(ren), either parent, any adult sibling(s), any adult grandchild(ren), close friend, or guardian of an estate.
For some, the order of the medical decision makers does not pose a problem, however, for those who do not want to chance who would make medical decisions for them, should they become incapacitated, it is highly recommended that you contact an attorney, financial advisor, or go on line and prepare a Medical Power of Attorney to designate who’s in charge to make your medical decisions, should you become incapacitated.
Bye for now, Bren.
QUIZ:
Is there a difference between a Durable Medical Power of Attorney and a Medical Power of Attorney?
Answers to last week’s quiz: Financial Advisors (FA) are most helpful to purposeful people, those who are already wealthy, but especially those who want to build their wealth and pass it on. A FA can provide with plans for tax protection, asset protection, building college funds, creating retirement funds, rapid debt reduction… just to name a few.

Singer-Songwriter Eugenie Jones’ New Album Penned, “Winner”
SEATTLE, PRNewswire -- BrightIDEAS Communications and Open Mic Records announce Eugenie Jones’ new self-titled release, EUGENIE, a profoundly personal and ambitious project, hitting airwaves on January 20.
Seattle-based singer, songwriter, and jazz legacy activist Eugenie Jones will release her highly anticipated album, EUGENIE, on January 20. Throughout her ten-year career Jones has become known for her smooth, powerful, satin vocal style and her intelligent, insightful songwriting, earning her comparisons to legendary songwriters Abbey Lincoln and Nina Simone. *EUGENIE*, follows five highly acclaimed albums, including the #7 Jazz Week Top 50 hit *PLAYERS*, which featured renowned artists such as Reggie Workman and Bobby Sanabria.
Following suit, EUGENIE – an exquisite, soulful, straight-ahead release with masterful instrumentation, beautiful string arrangements, rich melodies, and captivating narratives – is creating quite a buzz among music critics. “Highly recommended,” “impeccable phrasing and delightful,” “soaring vocals,” “emotive and enthralling,” “captivating,” and “instrumentally lustrous” are only a few of the encomium compliments the project has already received.
The album showcasing the depth and breadth of Jones’ talent is composed of 13 tracks. Six originals(bringing her total published works to 32) range from swing, Latin, slow-burn ballads, and bluesy originals
- and seven glistening contemporized classics initially recorded by Peggy Lee, Nat Adderley, Nina Simon, Aretha Franklin, and Marvin Gaye present a balanced array of sound and emotion.
The album opens with Jones’s self-declarative “Why I Sing,” with the compelling lyrics “DRIVE! DRIVE! DRIVE to wherever jazz lives,” ratcheted up by the exuberantly musical lockstep of McCune on piano, Plaxico on bass, and Carter on drums.
Originals, “Starlight Starbright” and “Nothing Better,” buoyed to another realm by cellist Jessica Wang and violinist Yoojin Park, testify to Jones’ ability to craft wondrous ballads with a sensuous vocal prowess that emphatically pulls listeners inside the throes of passion past, present, and yet to come.
But the album is far more than romantic melodies. The tenor shifts considerably with the hip, yet reminiscent, arrangement of Nina Simon’s ubiquitous “Sinnerman,” the bluesy, “put-the-blade-in-myheart-while-looking-in-my-face” original “Say What You Will,” the slowed groove of Peggy Lee’s “I Love Being Here with You,” and an intense rekindling of Marvin Gaye’s movie soundtrack hit, “Trouble Man.”
Also beautifully augmented by strings and highly complimented by critics is Jones’ version of “Natural Woman.” Writer C. Michael Bailey’s review states: “If this song can be more soulful, then it is so.” Comparably, The Ark of Music website states: “You’ve heard ‘Natural Woman,’ but not like this. The
strings and arrangement lift the emotional impact by at least 500%, and Jones’ vocals, harmonizing and accompanying, grant the song’s empowering protagonist a strength and tenacity not felt on the already capable original.”
With the desire to preserve the legacy of now-gentrified, musically historic communities, Eugenie Jones has served as Executive Producer of Seattle’s Jackson Street Jazz Walk for seven years. She presents a stream of community concerts and educational pop-ups that honor music icons of the once vibrant African American Seattle Central District, where Ray Charles and high school jazz musicians Ernestine Anderson and Quincy Jones began their iconic musical journeys. Jones doubles the event’s impact by using it to raise funds for non-profits that serve the needs of disadvantaged residents.
When it comes to her music, Jones describes her artistic journey: “Pursuing a music career is a Sisyphean act unlike any other I’ve taken on. But it brings unmatched joy and purpose to my life. So, with this release, here I stand, rolling that boulder up the hill again.”

Gov. Pritzker Celebrates $22 Million Investment in Critical Healthcare Services in Normal
NORMAL -- Governor JB Pritzker joined leaders from the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) and the Illinois Capital Development Board (CDB) to celebrate a $21.7 million grant for Lifelong Access (formerly known as Marcfirst) which will be used to purchase and renovate a new hub for health and wellness services in Normal. The event included local elected officials, state legislators, Lifelong Access’ interim CEO Rebecca Brennan, and agency directors from CDB and HFS.
“Over the past six years, we have undertaken an ambitious effort to rebuild and revitalize healthcare in Illinois – seeking to build a truly comprehensive care infrastructure across the state,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “The investments we are making here are not only about better healthcare, but community revitalization. Lifelong Access will have a home in the old Pantagraph building – a historical pillar of downtown Bloomington that will now become both a social services hub and an economic driver for the area.”
Lifelong Access will use the grant funding to purchase the Pantagraph newspaper building, which will serve as a collaborative hub for multiple agencies supporting services in behavioral health, psychiatry, a youth behavioral urgent care center, pediatric primary care, dental wellness, alternative youth education, community day services, food security initiatives and supported employment programming. The project unites several partners to provide services at the hub, including: Chestnut Health Systems, the Regional Office of Education (ROE) #17, Project Oz, Midwest Food Bank of Illinois-Bloomington-Normal, and YWCA McLean County.
By repurposing a historic building in the community, this critical investment not only expands access to healthcare services, but also helps revitalize a critical area of the community.
This announcement is part of the transformational $200 million Healthcare Transformation Capital Investment Grant Program, which provided 13 grantees across the state with critical funding designed to transform healthcare
delivery and outcomes in underserved communities.
“HFS is proud to be partnering with CDB on this unique new program, which builds on our ongoing efforts to promote equitable access to healthcare across the state, particularly in historically underserved communities,” said Acting HFS Director Elizabeth M. Whitehorn. “We look forward to seeing these 13 projects come to fruition and the positive impacts they will have on health outcomes in the communities they serve.”
“This capital grant program represents a significant investment in the health and wellness of Illinois communities,” said CDB Executive Director TJ Edwards. “CDB is proud to oversee the construction of these projects, which will not only enhance access to critical healthcare services but also create innovative facilities.”
Healthcare Transformation Capital Improvement grants will build on HFS’ equity-driven Healthcare Transformation Collaboratives (HTC) program, which was established in 2021. The goals of the HTC program are to expand access to care and improve health equity, especially in underserved communities, by leveraging shared resources among partners to create locally-driven solutions.
These awards also support six safety net hospitals, which are critical to providing essential medical care to Illinois’ most underserved communities. Safety nets are hospitals and medical centers that provide healthcare to patients regardless of insurance status or their ability to pay. Safety net health entities secured nearly half (48%) of the $200M in funding.
“We are thankful for the Healthcare Transformation grant program. The Town of Normal and the entire Bloomington-Normal community will benefit from these grant dollars,” said Town of Normal Mayor Chris Koos. “Since the pandemic, our communities have seen a rise in mental health-related needs. Expanding access to critical services and ensuring access is available to all, especially underserved populations, is key.”
“Programs like this show what’s possible when vi-
sionary leaders come together to create real change,” said Bloomington Mayor Mboka Mwilambwe. “These projects will directly benefit residents by addressing critical health needs while also contributing to the revitalization of our community, including Downtown Bloomington. We’re grateful to the state and everyone involved in making this transformative program a reality.”
“This is a huge step not only for Illinois, but for Lawndale residents and every surrounding community that, without more health care access, would be at risk,” said State Senator Lakesia Collins (D-Chicago). “Lawndale Christian Health Center serves thousands of residents, and with this funding will be able to make meaningful improvements to their facility, improving quality of care for all patients they see.”
“This funding further strengthens our state’s commitment to health care access, ensuring all residents can receive the quality care they deserve,” said State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago). “In the 3rd District, this support will empower Insight Hospital to expand resources for youth and families, reinforcing its critical role as a safety net provider.”
“I am proud of this impactful investment, which brings much-needed resources to some of the most underserved communities in our state,” said Rep. Yolonda Morris (D-Chicago). “As a healthcare professional, I know very well how access to quality care can change lives. I am proud of this compassionate investment that will help to uplift our residents and enrich our communities.”
“Through this major state investment aimed at increasing equity and access to health care on the South Side, Insight Chicago will be able to provide robust academic support, modern athletic facilities and welcoming community empowerment spaces for local residents,” said Rep. Kimberly DuBuclet (D-Chicago). “Insight has served our community for over 172 years, and with investments such as these I am certain that its work will continue for the next 172.”
MAYOR THADDEUS JONES FOCUSED,
PREPARED, AND DETERMINED TO CONTINUE TO ACHIEVE RECORD BREAKING TRENDS
PROMISES DELIVERED ON ECONOMIC GROWTH, BUSINESS RETENTION, PUBLIC SAFETY AND AN IMPROVED INFRASTRUCTURE
“FISCALLY SOUND, WITH LOCKED IN STABILITY AND AN IMPROVED INFRASTRUCTURE
“A PARADIGM SHIFT HAS BEEN ACHIEVED IN CALUMET CITY”
(Lynwood, IL) Thaddeus Jones- Mayor of Calumet City, Illinois- is motivated and clearly enthusiastic concerning recent data that shows enormous progress, stability, and fiscal growth over the past four years in Calumet City. From public safety to an improved infrastructure, Calumet City has experienced remarkable gains performed by the Jones administration.
Upon being elected in 2021, Mayor Jones was faced with dire inherited challenges that led to tough financial decisions and an ultra-conservative approach to the total financial health of the thirty thousand plus resident city. In addition, the mayor made it clear to the residents of Calumet City that something major had to be done about the much maligned and consistently declining property known as River Oaks Shopping mall.
Now four years later, Calumet City now has 121 new businesses totaling 1,481 in total. In addition, the Calumet City Planning and Development department have worked extremely hard in enforcing code violations against numerous businesses of the past that were allowed to not renew their licenses nor improve their respective properties. The Jones administration incorporated an improved culture of cooperation between the city administration and the businesses throughout Calumet City that has fostered improved production.
Mayor Jones also led the charge to seek out more grant dollars to offer relief to the taxpayers of Calumet City. In fact, the mayor and his team have delivered nearly 49 million dollars in grant funding. This measure allowed the administration to concentrate on tax collections throughout the business community as well as property tax collections amongst homeowners. Moreover, last month the South Suburban Mayors and Managers released a complete ranking of southland towns that have been successful in sales tax distribution. Remarkably Calumet City placed 7th on the list of 44 South suburban towns in this regard. Calumet City finished slightly behind other prominent towns such as Tinley Park, Orland Park, and Homewood. This is all an incredible victory for Calumet City that has led to an astonishing 4.7-million-dollar Surplus wihtin the city's
Mayor Thaddeus Jones
coffers.
Upon being elected the mayor promised the residents that he would reform the police department and reduce crime throughout the city. Today Calumet City is safer due to Mayor Jones and his outstanding Police Chief, Kevin Kolosh, and the entire Calumet City Police Department. In fact, here is a glimpse of the improvements in public safety:
•Added 26 new police officers since 2021.
•Created a 21 officer Neighborhood Police Bike Patrol
•Provided all officers with body worn cameras.
•16 new firefighters
•Equipped police vehicles with the latest dash cams
•Won over $4 million in public safety funding at no cost to taxpayers.
•Increased car patrols in residential, business and school areas
• Expanded training programs in Civil Rights, Use of Force, Opioid Overdose, Domestic
Harvey Police Department Assists in Swift Resolution of Armed Robbery Targeting Postal Carrier
Harvey, IL – The Harvey Police Department, in collaboration with U.S. Postal Inspectors, swiftly apprehended suspects and recovered stolen mail following an armed robbery of a United States Postal Service (USPS) letter carrier.
At approximately 9:55 a.m. on January 8, a USPS letter carrier was delivering mail near 15801 S. Halsted Street when an unidentified male suspect brandished a black firearm with a drum magazine and demanded money. The suspect searched the carrier’s pockets, entered the mail truck, and stole two bins of packages and a backpack before fleeing the scene.
U.S. Postal Inspectors canvassed the area in search of the suspect when they heard gunshots and pursued three individuals to a residence at 620 E 157th Place. After obtaining consent to search the premises, the inspectors, with support from the Harvey Police Department, detained the individuals, recovered the stolen mail, and seized two firearms.
All three suspects were promptly transported to the Harvey Police Department, where an investigation is ongoing, The successful and rapid resolution of this case reflects the excellent collaboration between the Harvey Police Department and the U.S. Postal Service.
The Harvey Police Department remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its community and thanks its partners at the USPS for their professionalism and dedication.
•22% decrease in violent crime
•23% decrease in burglaries
•130 guns taken off Cal City streets since January of 2024
•114% increase in narcotic arrests
Mayor Jones also pledged to remove the negative stigma associated with River Oaks Shopping Mall. During his campaign for mayor, Jones often described the mall property as nothing more than a gun range in that numerous shootings had occurred over the years. Well, after years of attempts to take over the River Oaks mall, Mayor Jones recently took steps to acquire portions of the property through eminent domain. Mayor Jones and the City Council approved the quick-take action to begin the process of eminent domain by making a final offer to the property owners to buy the mall for $13.2 million.
During the summer of 2024, Jones unveiled a $110 million development plan for the 11-acre campus that includes retail, restaurants, and housing. The mayor also presented updated ideas for redeveloping River Oaks for mixed use including a three-level go-kart track to be operated by the New Jersey based company Supercharged.
Mayor Jones has been very vocal concerning the spirit of cooperation he has received from select Calumet City Alderman. Specifically, there have been three Alderman, along with the City Treasurer , who have collectively ignored the sour political winds of the past and have raised their sleeves and worked extremely hard to ensure that the above mentioned accomplishments became a reality. 1st Ward Alderman Ramone D. Williams, 7th Ward Anthony Smith, 3rd Ward DeAndre Tillman, and City Treasurer Gerald Tarka, have played pivotal roles in the success of the administration. Mayor Jones has fully endorsed the gentlemen for their respective reelection campaigns for the February 25th Municipal Election.
“There is no way I could have accomplished as much without these incredibly talented Aldermen and City Treasurer who put the people of Calumet City before the ugly politics of Calumet City’s past. Together we have raised the standard of how local government should work and be conducted.” says Mayor Jones.
Mayor Jones is currently a candidate for re-election as Mayor of Calumet City. In addition to the aforementioned Aldermen and City Treasurer, the Mayor has also endorsed City Clerk Candidate Cassandra Holbert Elston, 1st Ward Aldermanic candidate Sharlisa Harvey, 2nd Ward Aldermanic Candidate Erica Jenkens, 5th Ward Aldermanic Candidate Roger Munda, and 6th Ward Aldermanic candidate Miacole Nelson.
