briefly LT. GOVERNOR STRATTON CONVENES WOMEN BUSINESS OWNERS IN BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS

BLOOMINGTON, IL – Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton gathered more than 20 women and BIPOC business owners in Bloomington, Illinois, for the inaugural We Chat. The Jan. 18th convening was the first of many forthcoming We Chats, as part of the newly launched We Thrive initiative. “We know that when women thrive, we all thrive, and these conversations are critical to informing policy decisions and achieving financial freedom for women and girls,” said Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton. “I look forward to learning more from the women of Illinois and connecting them with the resources they need to achieve financial wellness.” The Jan. 18th We Chat highlighted women’s struggles in the pursuit of financial freedom. When asked about the financial difficulties they experience, many women cited a lack of financial education and confidence. The group expressed a desire for additional support for small business owners, mentorship and making existing resources more accessible. The listening session was organized in partnership with Denise Moore, CEO/Founder of the Black Business Alliance Peoria Chapter, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit corporation overseeing both WPNV 106.3 LP FM, Peoria’s only Black-owned community radio station, and the Minority Business Development Center. “The Minority Business Development Center is honored to host the first-ever We Chat,” said Denise Moore, CEO and Founder of the Black Business Alliance in Peoria Chapter, Inc. “The women in attendance represent small businesses across the spectrum of goods and services. Many of them never thought their opinions were valued at the state level and just being invited to attend by our Lt. Governor already provides a feeling of empowerment.” Lieutenant Governor Stratton will travel throughout the state to call on women of diverse backgrounds and lived experiences. If you’re interested in participating in a future We Chat, e-mail LtGovStratton@illinois.gov for more updates.

Perinatal Clinical Psychologist said parents’ mental health can impact children’s mental health in early stages Continued from page 1 BY TIA CAROL JONES

In undergrad, Fisher was trying to figure out what he wanted to do as a career and debating whether he wanted to do child psychology or adult psychology. He found perinatal psychology, which was a combination of working with parents and understanding their experiences while also looking at the health and mental health of children. Fisher has been doing perinatal psychology work for 19 years and has been a faculty member at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine for almost 13 years. “It was a perfect marriage of both of those worlds to really understand the family system,” Fisher said. He added that he wanted to help children at an early stage, to help them to grow up healthy, and at the same time, since parents are the biggest influence on children’s environment and wellbeing, it was a way to prevent future mental health issues, while supporting adults dealing with their experiences. Fisher said that when a woman is pregnant the stress can have an impact on the fetus and once the child is born, parents’ behaviors, the way they engage with the child – vocalizations, eye contact, how much attention they give – influences the child based on the parent’s mood. Even though the child is nonverbal, the way a parent engages with a child can impact a child’s wellbeing, sense of stress and the way they deal with stress, even as infants. Fisher said as a child gets older and more verbal, day to day interactions, discipline approaches and a child seeing how a parent deals with their own stress, can have an impact on a child’s emotional health. “The goal is to provide a nurturing and stable environment for the child, but it is also about what the child observes; not only what you do directly to the child,” Fisher said. For example, if a parent is able to be positive and nurturing with the child, but the child observes the parent coming across as they are not doing well, the child has empathy and can become concerned, putting more of an emotional weight on the child. Fisher said parental leave has shown to decrease depres-

sion in mothers and fathers, yet the United States does not have federally supported leave for parents after a child is born. He added, not having enough parental leave doesn’t give parents enough bonding time with a baby after their birth. Fisher said that there should be maternal and paternal leave after the birth of a child. He said not giving paternal leave puts more of the childbearing and childrearing burden on the mother, which impacts everyone’s stress levels and can even make the man feel like a secondary parent. “We have to be conscious about how much our general policies and federal policies, state and local, how much are they structured for making sure a family is supported and we’re not overburdening the mom,” he said, adding that commonly a year of parental leave is beneficial for parents. He added that, having a year of parental leave gives children an opportunity to bond and engage with the parent. It also gives the mother and father the opportunity to psychologically and physically heal and come to terms with their new identity as parents. Fisher would like to see the United States give parents a standard three months of parental leave as a start. When parental leave is available, mothers get three months, while fathers get two weeks. Fisher always wanted to be a father and was blessed to have a daughter. Because of the nature of his work as a perinatal psychologist, he was able to prepare for fatherhood in a unique way, focusing on how to design the postpartum period to be healthy. He believes with preparation, purposefulness and collaboration between the parents and their community, there is a way to design that period that allows for healthy outcomes. Because of the transient nature of people, sometimes people have to be more creative around creating support and community, making sure they have people who share their commonalities and can give them emotional support. Fisher does a lot of international work that has expanded his thought process around the perinatal period. Being in other countries, the more he engages with other communities, the more he can understand aspects and approaches to parenting, as well as academically to understand the perinatal period better and to create better interventions to support families.

The announcement is the product of a year of work between the State and Wieland to ensure Illinois secured this transformative investment. Wieland CEO Dr. Erwin Mayr, was used as a benchmark for the modernization of the East Alton facility – a testament to the shared commitment for longevity and growth in Illinois. “Copper production is an essential part of a sustainable manufacturing future in Illinois, and Wieland’s commitment to increased capacity will benefit other sustainable industries across the state, further growing this thriving sector,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Wieland’s leading work in copper solutions is a major part of the East Alton economy, and I’m grateful that they have reaffirmed their commitment to sustainable manufacturing and to the community.” As part of its commitment to Illinois advanced manufacturing modernization, Wieland will invest $500 million to modernize its East Alton facility. Wieland’s footprint in Illinois also includes facilities in Carol Stream, Granite City, Montgomery, Tinley Park, and Wheeling. “Copper is not only integral to the energy transition, it is the foundation of a sustainable future,” said Wieland CEO Dr. Erwin Mayr. “This investment positions Wieland as the undisputed leader in North American rolled products and underscores our commitment to the revitalization of American manufacturing. This investment represents our dedication to respond to our customers’ evolving needs, bringing long-term sustainable solutions to the North American market. The project will allow Wieland to significantly expand future capacity and deepen our collaboration with our customers in building towards a more sustainable future.” The modernization paves the way for increased and improved production of high-quality copper and copper alloy components for EVs, EV charging infrastructure and renewable energy production through the installation of a new state-of-the-art hot rolling mill in the East Alton facility. By re-equipping, expanding and modernizing its facility, Wieland will increase its operational efficiency and deliver even higher standards of quality and reliability for its portfolio of copper and copper alloy rolled product solutions. “Today’s announcement is about leveraging Wieland’s more than 200year history to build upon the 100-year history of our East Alton facility,” said Greg Keown, President of Wieland Rolled Products North America. “I’m incredibly grateful to Governor Pritzker, Deputy Governor Andy Manar, Senator Dick Durbin, Senator Tammy Duckworth, Representative Nikki Budzinski, the team at the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Mayor Darren Carlton, and Madison County who worked tirelessly to make this project a reality. This is a shining example of how public-private

partnerships are intended to work.” Wieland’s total incentive package from the State of Illinois, which includes REV and other incentives, is valued at approximately $231 million. Through REV, Wieland is eligible to receive tax benefits totaling $172 million over 30 years. A link to the executed REV agreement can be found here. The remaining benefits include capital funding for infrastructure projects in East Alton, which includes the construction of a new electricity substation, flexible funds for workforce support, and additional tax incentives. “Wieland’s facility modernization project is an extraordinary example of what happens when we prioritize investing in our state’s world-class workforce and preserving a century-old relationship with a business that has deep Illinois roots,” said DCEO Director Kristin Richards. “This investment will help bolster the State of Illinois’ clean energy economy and is an investment in the future of manufacturing jobs in East Alton.” Wieland’s decision to modernize and expand operations in Illinois speaks to the state’s superior workforce, strong supply chain, infrastructure and unmatched location in the middle of everything. Wieland’s investment comes on the heels of a banner year for economic development in the EV and clean energy sector, including Gotion’s EV battery gigafactory in Manteno – which represents the largest manufacturing investment in decades and the largest EV battery investment to date, as well as REV agreements with Manner Polymers in Mt. Vernon, who is building a first-of-its kind solar-powered PVC compounding plant using clean energy generated on-site; Prysmian Group in Du Quoin, whose $64 million expansion will manufacture cables for the renewable energy and electric vehicle sectors; and Microlink Devices, which manufactures state-of-the-art solar cells and solar shields in Niles. “The Metro East is a fantastic location with strong communities and endless opportunities for growth and investment,” said Rep. Katie Stuart (D-Edwardsville). “I’m thrilled—but not surprised in the least—to see that another profitable and productive enterprise has recognized our potential and has chosen to continue to move forward with us and continue investing in the East Alton community.” “I’m thrilled that Wieland Rolled Products has chosen their East Alton facility to reinvest in advanced manufacturing jobs in the Metro East,” said Rep. Amy Elik (R-Alton). “Today’s announcement would not have happened without the collaboration and cooperation from state, federal, and local leaders coming together with company officials to keep these skilled jobs right here in East Alton.”

HUNTER ENCOURAGES ORGANIZATIONS TO APPLY FOR GRANT TO ADDRESSICKLE CELL DISEASE State Senator Mattie Hunter is encouraging organizations that work in the realm of prevention, care and treatment of sickle cell disease to apply for funding to increase services for people with the illness. “Closing the gap in access to comprehensive care and preventative treatment that some communities experience is a step toward curbing the deep social impact and mortality rate of sickle cell disease,” said Hunter (D-Chicago). “This funding offers hope for improved outcomes and a better quality of life for those affected by this disease.” The Illinois Department of Public Health will provide funding for eight organizations to grow innovative solutions to sickle cell disease. Organizations will be awarded grant funding with the goal of increasing access to comprehensive sickle cell treatment, pain management therapies, infusion centers, mental health resources and counseling opportunities for people with sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait. Applications will be accepted until March 18 at 5 p.m. For more information and to apply, visit IDPHgrants.com and search for this program under “Current Grants” and “Health Promotion.”

PRESTON’S NEW MEASURE SETS PRECEDENT FOR CONSUMER FOOD HEALTH AND SAFETY State Senator Willie Preston introduced new legislation to ban harmful chemicals in candy, soda and other food items sold and produced in Illinois. “This legislation, in its simplest form, increases food safety for Illinoisans,” said Preston (D-Chicago). “These substances have been used in food for decades, and new evidence shows they can pose serious threats to our health and to the health of our kids.” Senate Bill 2637 – the Illinois Food Safety Act – will ban specific, dangerous food additives from being used in the manufacturing, delivering, distributing, holding or selling of food products. These additives include brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propylparaben and red dye no. 3. Preston joined Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, State Representative Anne Stava-Murray and advocates at the Healthy Lifestyle Hub to announce the initiation of the Illinois Food Safety Act and emphasize the legislation’s intent. As a father of six, Preston stressed that the legislation prioritizes children, who face heightened risks from these chemicals due to their developing bodies and increased consumption of these types of food products. “Illinois families deserve to have access to the healthiest food options,” Preston said. “This legislation does not seek to ban any products or take away any of our favorite foods. This measure sets a precedent for consumer health and safety to encourage food manufacturers to update their recipes to use safer alternative ingredients.” Preston intends to work alongside his colleagues this legislative season to include additional additives like titanium dioxide. Additionally, his proposed legislation will call for studies on the potential health risk of

Chicago Public Schools Observes National Mentoring Month CHICAGO – Chicago Public Schools (CPS) celebrates National Mentoring Month and the ongoing efforts to provide both our students and educators with targeted guidance and support through vital mentorship programs. In recent years, CPS has expanded mentoring opportunities to strengthen teaching and learning practices for both educators and students. “To honor our commitments in the CPS Three-Year Blueprint, we have made intentional investments in addressing our students’ and teachers’ individual needs,” said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. “Our mentorship programs allow us to meet their needs as they develop tools that will help propel them toward a successful future as a student or educator.” School-Based Mentoring for Students The Office of School Counseling and Postsecondary Advising (OSCPA) is committed to ensuring all CPS students are equipped to be successful in college, careers and beyond. Mentoring is an effective tool to help students navigate the often steep, and uneven road to adulthood. CPS aims to provide students with support systems and positive adult relationships needed to thrive and successfully plan their future. School-based mentoring for middle and high-school-age youth focuses on improving the academic and social-emotional outcomes of students who require additional support and resources. This school year, the District’s School-Based Mentoring Cohort, consisting of 65 elementary, middle, and high schools, will match more than 1000 students to CPS staff advisors or near-peer mentors who have been mentored themselves and are now equipped to support others. “I joined the peer mentor program because, as a freshman, I felt like I needed guidance around dealing with this new experience, especially after Covid,” said Kayla Romero, a senior at Benito Juarez Community Academy. “As I transitioned from a mentee to a mentor, I improved my communication skills and I learned that we are all in the same boat on this journey.” CPS provides several student mentoring opportunities throughout the District and works with community partner organizations to extend and enhance that support and services. More than 65 schools run, “Becoming A Man (BAM),” during the school day which strives to improve academic achievement and reduce violence among disadvantaged youth through school-based group sessions led by community members with relatable life experiences. School counselors throughout the District are also creating programs tailored to serve their school population. Jorge Alaves, the School Counselor at Lindblom Math and Science Academy created “Colegio,” a mentoring program for Latino students that means “College.” “We launched `Colegio’ about six years ago when we noticed that Latino males at Lindblom seemed to be struggling academically and socially and were less likely to apply to colleges,” Alaves said. “Through targeted team building activities, peer mentorship, and larger discussion groups we have seen a growth in participants’ confidence in themselves, their academic capabilities and ultimately an increase in college applications.” More intensive mentoring programs, like the District’s, “Choose to Change” program, combine trauma-informed therapy with intense wraparound supports to reduce youth violence while improving educational outcomes outside of an institutional setting and serve close to 1,000 students in 27 communities in Chicago’s South and West sides. Back to Our Future aims to re-engage students who have become disconnected from CPS by connecting them with community counselors and individualized mentoring designed to get them back on track to complete their education. More than 400 students have successfully completed the pilot program allowing them to return to high school or earn their high school diploma. Through Chicago Mentoring Collaborative (CMC) the District aims to empower community-based mentoring and out-of-school time programs by helping community organizations learn the best mentoring practices and share resources. CMC supports the development of school and community-based mentoring programs that are effective, sustainable, culturally relevant and grass-roots driven to ensure youth from kindergarten to seniors in high school are equipped with the skills and opportunities needed to succeed - both inside and outside of school.

Gov. Pritzker Highlights Smart Start Successes in Belleville, Peoria, and Rochester PEORIA – Governor JB Pritzker highlighted the more than 5,800 preschool seats created in the first year of Smart Start Illinois. The Governor visited Rochester Elementary School and Peoria Heights Grade School, and yesterday visited Ellis Elementary School to highlight the program’s successes. Smart Start is Governor Pritzker’s transformative plan for early childhood education and care that represents the State’s ongoing commitment to children, families, teachers, and childcare providers. “As a longtime advocate for early childhood education and as a father, I know this work begins long before a child steps foot into a grade school classroom,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Quality early childhood care and education are vital for both working parents and their young children. That’s why my administration launched Smart Start, ensuring that every child in Illinois is set up for a lifetime of success.” “Every child deserves access to quality preschool, and Smart Start is doing just that while also uplifting the early childhood workforce,” said Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton. “The success of Smart Start further proves that Illinois is the best state to live, work and raise a family.” In the first year of Smart Start, the State invested $250 million, including: $75 million additional for the Early Childhood Block Grant to put Illinois on a path to creating more than 20,000 new Pre-K spots for every child who wants one $130 million for nation-leading Childcare Workforce Compensation Contracts that will stabilize providers and give childcare workers a raise An additional $40 million for Early Interven-

tion programs to enhance services for families and give providers a raise $5 million to expand the Illinois Department of Human Services’ Home Visiting Program so more families who want it can receive this early support In the first year of Smart Start, the Illinois State Board of Education awarded new funding to more than ninety-five programs in preschool deserts around the state to create 5,886 new preschool seats—exceeding the 5,000-seat goal set for the first year by 18%. Once all ninety-five programs are open, over 82,000 publicly funded preschool seats will be available across the state. The Pritzker Administration is committed to making Illinois the best state in the nation to live and raise a family. Building on these early childhood care and education advancements, Governor Pritzker also recently announced a proposal to house all early childhood programs under one unified state agency—increasing access, support, and equity for all families and providers. “We want every child to unlock their full potential,” said Speaker Pro Tempore Jehan Gordon-Booth (D-Peoria). “Investing in early childhood education eases the cost to working parents, stimulates the minds of our kids, and develops a strong foundation for children before they enter school.” “Investing in early childhood education expands opportunities for our youth, setting them up to be lifelong learners,” said State Senator Doris Turner (D-Springfield). “Smart Start Illinois exemplifies our commitment to education across the state. We are one step closer to ensuring every child will receive a high-quality education.”

Michael Strahan’s Daughter Undergoes Cancer Treatment, Puts Proton Therapy in the Spotlight SOMERSET, N.J., PRNewswire -- The daughter of former NFL star and TV personality Michael Strahan has put proton therapy in the spotlight since her announcement earlier this month that she is receiving treatment for a malignant brain tumor. The announcement from Isabella Strahan came during an interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Isabella Strahan, a freshman at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, was diagnosed in late October after she began experiencing headaches. She has medulloblastoma, which is a cancerous brain tumor that grows quickly, and is more likely to spread to other parts of the body. Dr. Brian Chon, medical director for New Jersey-based ProCure Proton Therapy Center, said proton therapy can effectively treat tumors in sensitive areas like the brain while reducing radiation exposure to healthy tissue in the brain by up to 50%. While ProCure did not treat Isabella Strahan,

ProCure sees patients with tumors in the brain and other sensitive areas of the body. ProCure was one of the first freestanding proton therapy Centers in New Jersey and has treated more than 6,000 patients in its first 10 years. Dr. Chon said the biggest advantage of proton therapy is that it precisely targets tumors while minimizing exposure to nearby brain tissue. Where standard X-ray radiation releases its maximum dose and continues to release it as it passes beyond the tumor, proton therapy releases its maximum dose directly within the tumor and then stops. “Because we can focus the dose of radiation within the tumor and minimize exposure to nearby brain tissue, eyes and the optic nerve, we find that many patients have fewer side effects than with standard radiation treatment,” Dr. Chon said. Proton therapy can also provide these benefits: Treating the most irregular-shaped tumors with greater accuracy Combining with conventional radiation, che-

motherapy, hormone therapy and/or as a follow-up to surgery Enabling patients to maintain their quality of life during and after treatment Learn more: https://www.procure.com/brain_ tumors/. ProCure Proton Therapy Center in Somerset, NJ, opened in March 2012 as the tri-state region’s first proton therapy facility, treating a range of cancers including disease of the prostate, breast, lung, brain, head and neck, and gastrointestinal system, as well as sarcomas and many pediatric cases. Using the most advanced radiation treatment available ProCure has treated more than 6,000 patients and enables many cancer patients to choose a non-surgical treatment personalized to their medical needs and lifestyles, often with fewer side effects and less downtime—giving them more freedom to enjoy what matters most in their lives. SHELBYVILLE, Tenn., PRNewswire -- Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey, the top-selling Black-owned spirits brand in the world, has announced the launch of its second annual HBCU Old Fashioned Challenge, a nationwide initiative to raise funds for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This year’s challenge will see the company work to raise $1.4 million, amounting to one full in-state tuition scholarship per accredited HBCU. The initiative kicked off on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (Monday, January 15) and this year it will run through Juneteenth (Tuesday, June 19). In 2023, it was widely reported that federal officials told 16 states that they have been underfunding their HBCUs by nearly $13 billion over the past 30 years, according to an analysis from the U.S. Department of Education. Tennessee - Uncle Nearest’s home state - underfunded its school’s land grants the most, according to the report. Through the Old Fashioned Challenge, Uncle Nearest’s goal is to not only raise money for these institutions but to shine a light on how HBCUs, which make up less than 3% of colleges, have a proven record of removing barriers to degree completion and postgraduate success, with their graduates making up 50 percent of Black doctors and Black attorneys, 40 percent of Black engineers and Black members of Congress, and 80 percent of Black judges. “Before we sold our first bottle of Uncle Nearest, we were already funding the college education of Nearest Green’s descendants,” said Fawn Weaver, Founder and CEO of Uncle Nearest. “Every semester, writing those checks brought me immense joy, knowing the significant impact they would have on each student’s life. This same feeling resurfaced when I began writing tuition checks to HBCUs for our Old Fashioned Challenge. It’s an honor, and my hope is that we can continue this tradition annually with the checks growing larger as the Uncle Nearest whiskey family expands.” Now through June 19, 2024, the public can participate in the Uncle Nearest HBCU Old Fashioned Challenge by: Ordering an Uncle Nearest Old Fashioned at participating bars and restaurants, where one dollar will be donated per cocktail ordered Purchasing any bottle of Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey at participating online and brick-and-mortar retail stores, where one dollar will be donated per bottle purchased Purchasing an Old Fashioned Bundle through ReserveBar, where two dollars will be donated for every bundle purchased Submitting a photo of a homemade Uncle Nearest Old Fashioned to www.oldfashionedcocktail.com, where one dollar will be donated per entry* “Uncle Nearest gives a lot, with ‘pulling as we climb’ being part of our DNA right from the start,” said Victoria Eady Butler, great-great-granddaughter of Nearest Green and four-time Master Blender of the Year. “But this challenge is something special, ‘cause we’re inviting our whiskey family to join us in giving back. Seeing the excitement from them, and our thousands of retail, restaurant, bar, hotel, and airline partners across the country even before this year’s challenge kicked off, well, that lets me know we’ve started something extraordinary. To our whiskey family and partners everywhere, thank y’all!” For more information on the HBCU Old Fashioned Challenge, including a list of participating bars, restaurants, and retailers, and to follow along on the road to $1.4 million raised, please visit www. oldfashionedcocktail.com. *Limited to one entry per email Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey pays tribute to the world’s first-known African American master distiller, Nearest Green.
