EXPANDING THE WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY FOR STROKE PATIENTS WITH IRAPID People who have suffered a stroke will benefit from new diagnostic software now being offered at OSF HealthCare hospitals in Bloomington, Peoria, and Rockford, Illinois. The iRapid software uses noninvasive CT imaging of the head that takes less than a minute to complete. “iRapid helps us determine who is going to benefit best,” said Ajeet Gordhan, MD, Interventional Radiologist with OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington. “The idea behind this is to give them a functional outcome and that’s the key. We are trying to rescue salvageable brain in patients who, in the past, may not have had that opportunity and although they might still have a deficit, the deficit may be not as profound and they may be able to attain some level of functional capability.”

Sauk Village Votes to Increase Available Liquor Licenses Continued from page 1 BY KATHERINE NEWMAN

t a recent meeting of the Sauk Village Board of Trustees, a motion was introduced to approve an ordinance amending chapter six, alcoholic beverage establishments, section 30, number of licenses, of the Sauk Village Municipal Code. The ordinance, which passed with a 4-2 vote, will increase the number of class R-3 Liquor Licenses allowed in Sauk Village to seven. The increase in R-3 Liquor Licenses might also mean an increase in establishments that operate video gaming terminals in the community. As defined in section one of the Illinois Gaming Act, a video gaming terminal is any electronic devices that, upon insertion of money, are available to play a video game, including but not limited to video poker, line up, and blackjack, utilizing a video display and microprocessors in which the player may receive free games or credits that can be redeemed for cash.
The term does not include a machine that directly dispenses coins, cash, or tokens or is for amusement purposes only. A precondition for holding a video gaming license in the state of Illinois is that each licensed establishment shall possess a valid liquor license at the time of application and at all times thereafter during which a video gaming terminal is made available to the public for play at that location, according to section 55 of the Illinois Gaming Act. Sauk Village Trustee Bernice Brewer voted against the ordinance and spoke out at the meeting to state that she thought the increase was a bad idea. “I think seven is a little excessive for this town and considering the kind of businesses that are here and the demographics, I think it would be a bad idea and I think seven is too many. I’m not saying that gaming is not a good lucrative business, but seven is too many for Sauk Village,” said Brewer. “I only see a lot of trouble coming.” During the Meeting Sauk Village Trustee, Beth Zupon, presented her own findings based on data from the Illinois
Gaming Board’s Video Gaming Report. The Video Gaming Report shows how many establishments offer video gaming in any Illinois municipality, how many video gaming terminals each establishment has, and how much revenue is generated from the video gaming terminals. As stated in the board meeting, Zupon found that the average number of establishments with video gaming terminals in the communities surrounding Sauk Village was seven. Nearby, the Village of Glenwood currently has seven video gaming establishments that generated $37,080.34 in revenue for the municipality from Jan. to April, according to the Video Gaming Report. “If you look at all of these municipalities, there is a lot of money. There is revenue made and we need revenue. When we sat down for six hours and went through every line item in our budget and every expenditure we saw that we need revenue. While I’m not the biggest fan of these things, they are generating revenue and that’s why my vote is yes,” said Zupon.
SPRINGFIELD, IL – Rank-and-file Chicago firefighters
would have greater oversight and control of funding intended for their department under legislation passed by the Illinois Senate today. Sponsored by State Senator Bill Cunningham and State Representative Fran Hurley, House Bill 5197 would establish a Foreign Fire Insurance Board, an entity that will be entrusted with the expenditure of fire insurance fees collected exclusively from insurance companies whose corporate headquarters are located outside of Illinois. Currently, the City of Chicago receives about $5 million in fire insurance fees, which are directly deposited into the city’s general fund. HB 5197 would transfer control of those funds to a newly-established Foreign Fire Insurance Board and require the City of Chicago to turn over fire insurance revenue to the board. “The legislation streamlines the flow of tax dollars and allows the Chicago fire fighters to determine how revenue intended for their own department is used,” said Cunningham, a Democrat representing parts of Chicago and the Southwest Suburbs. “The funding will now go directly to fire suppression instead of being spread throughout the city budget.” Advocates of the legislation say it will improve Chicago Firefighter’s safety and effectiveness through enhancements in their equipment and training. Under current law, the Chicago Fire Department is the only fire department in the state that does not have a fire insurance board. HB 5197 now heads to the House for approval.
First Fundraising Event for Blue Island Fire Museum BY KATHERINE NEWMAN
T
his weekend, the first fundraising event for the Blue Island Fire Museum and Education Center will take place at Fire Station #1, 2450 Vermont St., in Blue Island. An allyou-can-eat pancake breakfast will be held on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon and admission is $6 per person, children under 4 years old eat for free. All proceeds from the event will go toward construction costs for the Blue Island Fire Museum and Education Center that will serve as the new permanent home of Old Bess, a restored 1925 Seagrave motor pumper. Old Bess was the first new motorized piece of equipment that Blue Island ever purchased, according to Joe Di Novo, retired Blue Island firefighter and chairman of the Blue Island Fire Museum and Education Center Committee. The Blue Island Fire Department celebrated it’s 100 year anniversary in
1978 and in honor of the anniversary Old Bess was restored to its former glory. From that point on the old fire engine has been stored in the city’s garage. “The city had taken possession of a house across the street from Fire Station #1 that was in dilapidated condition and I said ‘let’s build a museum over there and we’ll put Old Bess in there and make it an education center to teach fire prevention classes to the kids.’ A week or 10 days went by and all of a sudden that became a good idea,” said Di Novo. In order to better house the scattered pieces of the Blue Island Fire Department’s history and to give the public access to Old Bess, the idea for the Blue Island Fire Museum and Education Center was born. While Old Bess sparked the idea to create the Museum, it will not be the only piece of history on display there. “There are a lot of deep-rooted firemen from Blue Island that have a lot of things that they are going to be willing to put
www.thechicagocitizen.com
on display in the museum,” said Di Novo. “It’s going to be part of the statewide bike path there so people will be able to go by it all the time and see what it looks like and learn a little bit of Blue Islands history.” The Blue Island Fire Museum and Education Center is currently working under the advisement of the Blue Island Historical Society and when construction on the Museum is complete it will become an asset of Blue Island and the city will own and operate it. The tentative fundraising goal to get this project completed is $250,000. Although, Di Novo is hoping that with the help of the Blue Island Historical Society they will be able to access some grants and investors to help with the cost. There is still no timeline for construction, it will depend on how quickly the money comes in, according to Di Novo. For more information visit the Blue Island Fire Museum’s page on Facebook.

ERIS Brewery & Cider House Turns to ELAN of Nortek Security & Control LLC for Total Control of its Cavernous 14,000 Square Foot Venue
W
hen two Chicago-based women purchased a massive former temple built in 1910 with the goal of turning it into Chicago’s first brewery and ciderhouse, they turned to local integration firm, Buchan Consulting, to design and install a control and automation system to manage the technology in the cavernous space. The ELAN® Entertainment and Control system Buchan recommended and installed is now providing seamless control over the climate, audio, video, lighting and security in the ERIS Brewery & Cider House. “With a venue this large, we had a lot of specific needs and requests that we had to address,” said Doug Buchan, Owner of Buchan Consulting. “The brewery and ciderhouse founders asked us to recommend a robust and easy-to-use automation system that would give them to access all of the building’s technology through a single interface. Without hesitation, we suggested that the brewery rely on ELAN to control the multi-room AV system, surveillance, lighting and HVAC.” The two-phase project recently completed its first phase, which consisted of a gut renovation of the basement and first floor of the brewery and restaurant. During phase one, Buchan’s team started with an ELAN gSC2 Controller, accessible through the ELAN app installed on dedicated Apple iPads, to control and automate the venue’s lighting, security, audio, video and HVAC. An ELAN 6x6 HDBaseT AV Matrix was also installed, to distribute audio and video throughout the main restaurant and bar floor. For power distribution, Buchan and his team added a Panamax® D10-PFP power strip to the equipment rack, for a convenient way to power a rack full of equipment. Control of the 14,000 square-foot main floor, brewery, cider/beer fermentation area and

office is now easy to manage for the owners and staff. Through the system, they’re now able to customize the climate, including both thermostats and ceiling fans, and adjust the audio and video needs of the separate areas, all with the swipe of a finger. The brewery’s owners sought to embrace
the industrial charm of the original building. To do this, they kept the original chandeliers, incorporating booths and tables made with reclaimed wood, and using repurposed radiators as railings for the new space. They were successfully able to transform the space so that the technology in no way takes away from the overall design, but helps to enhance it. “Through the ELAN system, we’re able to control and automate a unique and inviting environment that helps to fulfill our goal of making the ERIS Brewery & Cider House a gathering spot for the community. This system allows our staff to easily manipulate the everyday details of the space, all at the touch of a button,” said Michelle Foik, Owner
& Managing Partner of ERIS Brewery & Cider House. Another unique design element is the impressive Haiku fans, which were installed in the main dining space. The smart, WiFi connected fans, are controlled from the ELAN system, as are the Aprilaire® thermostats that run the building’s geothermal heating and cooling systems. Given the size of the space, security was another priority for the owners. To accommodate these needs, Buchan and his team installed five exterior cameras at the secondary entrances and two interior cameras at the main entrance, all of which are accessed and controlled through the ELAN system for easy triggering of building lights and push notifications when a security alarm is set off. “The security system that Buchan and his team installed is extremely comprehensive and instantly available to us through the ELAN app,” said Foik. “Having an extensive system gives me peace-of-mind when the brewery is shut down and closed at the end of each day.” According to Foik, “this system has been so easy to use. Our bartenders and managers can easily change the temperature, the channel on the TV, or crank up the volume at the bar, all through the ELAN app installed on the iPads we have throughout the space. Through this, owners can also remotely access the cameras and be notified of all happenings within the system, thanks to ELAN.” Phase two of the project will likely start in the summer of 2018 and will include the remodeling of the outdoor dining area, third floor event space and eventually rooftop dining. With the help of Buchan and their team of certified ELAN integrators, the technology involved in the expansion should be easy to deploy and even easier for the staff to use.

Chemotherapy Timing Could Influence How Well the Treatment Works Continued from page 3 factors. Our lab is studying how circadian clocks influence the repair of DNA in the cell – a natural process in which a team of enzymes travel along the DNA fixing breaks and errors caused by damaging effects of UV radiation and DNA-altering chemicals. Without these ever vigilant enzymes, our cells would accumulate mutations in our DNA that would lead to cancer and other diseases. Understanding this relationship between our body rhythms and DNA repair is important because there is mounting evidence that malfunctioning clocks are linked to conditions from obesity and epilepsy to insomnia and seasonal affective disorder. In the Sancar Lab, we have been exploring how the circadian rhythms influence DNA repair during treatment with the popular anticancer drug cisplatin.
In the past few decades scientists have attempted to use the circadian clock to guide the timing of cisplatin therapy. Their strategy was to give cisplatin at particular times and then monitor how the patient fared, thus revealing a time of day that yielded the greatest benefit with the least side effects. However, these experiments failed because the choice of times was somewhat arbitrary and not based on what was happening inside the cell. Cisplatin is used to treat most solid tissue cancers including testicular, ovarian, colorectal, lung and breast cancers. It kills cancer cells by damaging their DNA. However, it also damages DNA of normal cells, causing serious side effects that often force physicians to halt the treatment. Both normal and cancer cells repair the DNA damage caused by cisplatin. Successful treatment requires hitting cancer cells with DNA damage when they
are least capable of repairing it, while sparing the healthy tissue. In the past few decades scientists have attempted to use the circadian clock to guide the timing of cisplatin therapy. Their strategy was to give cisplatin at particular times and then monitor how the patient fared, thus revealing a time of day that yielded the greatest benefit with the least side effects. However, these experiments failed because the choice of times was somewhat arbitrary and not
based on what was happening inside the cell. When I (Yanyan) joined the lab a few years ago, Dr. Sancar’s team had figured out the connection between the circadian clock and DNA repair and developed a method to monitor how and when particular segments of DNA were repaired. I used this technique to chart when DNA in the kidney and liver cells of mice was repaired as we treated the animals with cisplatin for 24 hours. In this study, we recorded when and how well every one of the 25,239 mouse genes was repaired during a 24-hour day. We discovered which cancer-causing gene, or which cancer-preventing gene, is fixed when the drug is given at certain times of the day. Some genes were always patched up at dawn; others at dusk. That suggests the best time for chemotherapy is when the healthy cells can efficiently rebuild their DNA and when the tumor cells repair poorly.
With this knowledge in hand, we hope to extrapolate our findings to human tissues and cancers and find the optimum times to give patients their therapy. We hope this will help us develop a personalized chemotherapy regimen with cisplatin, which we’re calling chronochemotherapy, that synchronizes the delivery of the drug with their, and their cancer’s, circadian clocks. Our approach takes into account the repair patterns of individual genes over the course of the day both in healthy tissue and in cancer. With further testing, we hope to determine whether cisplatin chronotherapy can improve survival in cancer patients. Mubadala-led Investor Group and Sony Reach Agreement for Sony to Acquire All of Mubadala’s Interest in EMI Music Publishing
M
ubadala Investment Company (“Mubadala”) and Sony Corporation (“Sony”) recently announced that they have signed a legally binding memorandum of understanding (“MOU”) for the sale of the Mubadala consortium’s approximately 60% equity interest in EMI Music Publishing to Sony Corporation of America, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony, based on an enterprise value of $4.75 billion. As a result of the transaction, Sony will indirectly own approximately 90% of the equity interest in EMI Music Publishing and it will become a consolidated subsidiary of Sony. The closing of the transaction is subject to certain closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Kenichiro Yoshida, President and CEO, Sony Corporation said: “We are thrilled to bring EMI Music Publishing into the Sony family and maintain our number one position in the music publishing industry. I would also like to convey my gratitude to Mubadala, our equity partner in EMI Music Publishing, for sharing our longterm perspective on the potential success of music publishing and their support as we grew the business. The music business has enjoyed a resurgence over the past couple of years, driven largely by the rise of paid subscription-based streaming services. In the entertainment space, we are focusing on building a strong IP portfolio, and I believe this acquisition will be a particularly significant milestone for our long-term growth.” The original transaction and the investor consortium that partnered with Sony and the Michael Jackson Estate to acquire EMI Music Publishing from a whollyowned subsidiary of Citigroup Inc. were sourced and assembled by Mubadala Capital’s private equity business, which has controlled and managed EMI Music
Publishing on behalf of Mubadala and other third-party investors since 2012. Hani Barhoush, Head of Mubadala Capital, said: “EMI has been a successful investment for Mubadala and I would like to personally extend my appreciation to the leadership at Sony and Sony/ATV, who have been instrumental in administering the EMI catalog as well as shaping the music landscape on a global basis. They have been tremendous partners to us.” Adib Mattar, Head of Private Equity for Mubadala Capital and Chairman of EMI Music Publishing, said: “EMI Music Publishing represents one of the world’s largest and most diverse catalog of copyrights with iconic songs that span every decade over the last one hundred years. Writers and artists only stand to benefit under consolidated ownership and should feel proud to be part of the Sony family. The sale of our consortium’s interest in EMI Music Publishing represents a milestone for Mubadala and our private equity business.” While the final purchase price to be paid by Sony for all of Mubadala’s equity interest in EMI Music Publishing is subject to customary closing adjustments, the total cash consideration Sony expects to pay to consolidate EMI Music Publishing is approximately $2.3 billion. Sony will assume EMI Music Publishing’s existing gross indebtedness, which was approximately $1.359 billion as of March 31, 2018. Upon closing of the transaction, Sony expects to record in operating income a non-cash step-up gain of approximately 100 billion yen for the equity interest in EMI Music Publishing it currently owns. The step-up gain and the consolidation of EMI Music Publishing has not been included in Sony’s forecast of consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019, and Sony is currently assessing the impact of
this step-up gain and the consolidation of EMI Music Publishing on its consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019. Over the past six years, Mubadala and Sony have worked together as partners to create value alongside Sony/ATV Music Publishing (“Sony/ATV”), Sony’s music publishing arm, which has been administering the EMI Music Publishing catalog’s legacy of iconic writers and artists, reinvesting in existing writer relationships and growing the catalog by signing new writers on a 50/50 basis with Sony/ ATV. These actions, coupled with the global rise of streaming and paid streaming services, have led to an appreciation in value of the EMI Music Publishing catalog as millions of consumers have been provided access to innovative distribution channels to enjoy music like never before. EMI Music Publishing owns or administers over two million songs that include classics by Queen, Carole King and the Motown catalog along with contemporary songs from Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Drake, Sam Smith, Pink, Pharrell Williams, Calvin Harris, Fetty Wap, Hozier and Sia. Together with Sony’s 100%-owned music publishing company, Sony/ATV, and Sony’s 100%-owned music company, Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc., the Sony Group collectively owns more than 2.3 million copyrights, featuring the Beatles, contemporary superstars and the Leiber Stoller catalog. EMI Music Publishing generated revenue of $663 million, adjusted operating income of $181 million*, and adjusted EBITDA of $249 million* for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2018. *Adjusted to exclude certain non-recurring warrant expense and management incentive plan accruals.

COMMENTARY
Most Americans Say Trump’s Election Has Led to Worse Race Relations in the U.S. BY LISETTE GUSHINIERE
O
nce again, racism has reared its ugly head. Earlier in May, the tv sit-com “Roseanne” was abruptly canceled by ABC after the show’s star and co-creator Roseanne Barr posted a racist tweet. The tweet was directed at former President Barack Obama’s Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett, an African American woman who served throughout Obama’s presidency. Barr’s remark, which caused a Twitter storm read, if the “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” Barr later apologized blaming her actions on the sleep aid Ambien, but a company spokesperson for the drug later noted that, “while all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect,” of any of the company’s medications. So, if Ambien’s not a side effect or the cause of Barr’s racist behavior, could it be ‘The Trump Effect” instead? While comments like Barr’s aren’t anything new, where do Americans currently stand on the issue of race and does it matter who’s sitting in the Oval Office? A national survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2017 indicates that in fact, it does make a difference. The study, conducted between Nov. 29 - Dec. 2017, revealed that most Americans have a definite opinion. Gathering evidence on how they view racial relations under Trump verses under Obama, the results reveal stark differences between the two. Nearly a year into Donald Trump’s presidency, a majority of Americans (60%) said his election has led to worse race relations in the United States. Just 8% said Trump’s election has led to better race relations, while 30% say it has not made a difference. In 2008, according to the Center, voters were more optimistic about how Obama’s election would affect race relations than they were after President Trump’s victory. In November 2008, 52% said Obama’s election would lead to better race relations in the country. A year later, fewer Americans (36%) said race relations had improved, but only 13% said Obama’s election had made race relations worse. That was little changed from November 2008, when 9% of voters said Obama’s election would lead to worse race relations. Not only does the study show a difference in how Americans view race relations under the former and current president, it offers insight on where we are headed. Among the 1,503 adults surveyed in 2017 since Trump has been president, the majority (56%) said
race relations are generally bad, while 38% say they are generally good. Since May 2016, there has been an increase in the share of Americans who say race relations are getting worse – from 38% then to 44% today. But the tone of the country is set at the top and Americans have transitioned from, ‘No Drama Obama’ to a Trump presidency resembling episodes played out on a reality tv show. If the argument is that Trump’s highly charged rhetoric hasn’t made race relations worse, it certainly hasn’t made it better. From Trump saying publicly, ‘Look at my African American over there...’ referring to a black man whom he said “slugged” an alleged Klu Klux Klansman at one of Trump’s rallies to associating Mexicans with rapists, his comments have been just as disparaging as Barr’s. Many people were offended by Trump referring to the black man as “my African American” although the black male who Trump said came out to support him wasn’t offended at all. And who can forget Trump defending a group of white nationalist protesters after the melee in central Virginia, which ended in the death of
one woman and injuries to dozens of others saying there were, “some very fine people on both sides?” But let’s not get it confused, the bigotry and prejudice displayed by people like Barr and Trump aren’t the first acts of prejudice we’ve seen. The violent nature of both racist speech and hateful acts have long been a part of America’s shameful history. At the same time, the behavior displayed by people like Trump and Barr continues to polarize us all. Fortunately, Barr’s actions were met by a swift response from ABC. The only difference is Barr is not the leader of the free world. Likewise, when Trump makes statements like those made in the past, his behavior should be denounced as swiftly as Barr’s. And members of his own party should speak out, who for the most part have been silent. As president, Trump represents all Americans of every background regardless of color, class or creed. An “American First” philosophy is therefore exclusionary in nature and must be rejected since it fails to embrace the universal characteristics of our democracy. The reality must also set in that the
United States, first occupied by the Native Americans, has evolved into a different place. Today, it is a melting pot comprised of people who’s ancestors, including Trump’s, were immigrants who by choice or by force arrived in America. To top off a diminished perception as to how Americans perceive race relations today, a 2018 Ipsos Poll Conducted for Reuters reported that despite low unemployment numbers, only about one-third of Americans say the country is headed in the right direction, compared with 52 percent who say it’s on the wrong track. Unless Trump and his allies who’ve tried to paint a rosy picture of the economy can match up their rhetoric with reality, a victory for Republicans during the midterms might not be as easily won. Coupled with his constant swirl of controversy, chaos and divisiveness, in November, Trump may have to eat his words; and members of his party who have failed to denounce his bigotry, may be joining him for the last supper at the table. Judging a Book by Its Reviews, Not Looks: Brandon Frere Comments on the Changing Face of the Workplace
LOS ANGELES – Victoria’s
age, the overall appearance of the average worker is changing. Their faces will look younger each year, but their desire to prove themselves and do excellent work will be ever-present. Professional standards do need to be held, but what consists of a professional standard is changing with the generations. In a way, it is a bit of give and take between the older and newer generations. Brandon Frere, a successful entrepreneur and CEO of several companies, advises keeping in mind that as the times change it is important to judge an employee by performance and not appearance. Now, maintaining a dress code can help employees be in the right mindset to perform their best at work. But other appearance-based characteristics such as unnaturally dyed hair, piercings, and tattoos do not necessarily impede an employee’s ability to do work. Keeping in mind, though, how a consumer might perceive such appearances is still important. It’s a balancing act. “What is appropriate for one business may not be the same as another. A dealership will have different standards from, say, a typical office setting. It’s important to keep in mind what is best for your business, but that doesn’t also alienate current or potential employees,” says Frere. Different tactics can be used to maintain the balance of professionalism and an individual’s right to bodily autonomy. Allowing tattoos that can be covered when needed can be an easy halfway point. Piercings can be kept to only being gold or silver colored. There are many ways to accommodate a top-rated employee that has more than just academic decoration. Because in

The styling suite featured summer essentials from newly launched bra, lingerie and beauty collections including the new Cotton T-Shirt Bra Collection, Sexy Illusions, Dream Angels, Sexy and Casual Sleepwear, Bombshell Body Collection and Bombshell Summer Fragrance and Victoria Sport where editors and stylists were able to stop by to pull products for all their styling needs. Several events were held in the home hosted by Victoria’s Secret Angels where VIPs, influencers, stylists and more were able to check out the latest collections: The event kicked off with a cocktail party, “Logo A Gogo,” with Sara Sampaio and Sadie Newman. “Bombshell Body Spa” appointments with facials, spray tans, and manicures were also on the agenda. “Slay Then Rosé”

the end, time will keep moving forward. And if a business is to be in that future, the leaders of said business have to keep in mind the changing times and changing future generations. “Judging a book by its cover is an age-old reminder of what to avoid. If the best candidate for a job has a full arm covered in tattoos, so be it. The best thing an employee can have is a professional attitude and the right mindset to get the job done,” says Frere. About Frere Enterprises Brandon Frere is an entrepreneur and businessman who lives in Sonoma County, California. He has designed and created multiple companies to meet the ever-demanding needs of businesses and consumers alike. His company website, www.FrereEnterprises.com, is used as a means to communicate many of the lessons, fundamentals, and information he has learned throughout his extensive business and personal endeavors, most recently in advocating on behalf of student loan borrowers nationwide. As experienced during his own student loan repayment, Mr. Frere found out how difficult it can be to work with federally contracted student loan servicers and the repayment programs designed to help borrowers. Through those efforts, he gained an insider’s look into the repayment process and the motivations behind the inflating student loan debt bubble. His knowledge of the confusing landscape of student loan repayment became a vital theme in his future endeavors, and he now uses those experiences to help guide others through the daunting process of applying for available federal repayment and loan forgiveness programs.
London-Based Wires Glasses Lands Investor LONDON – Eyewear startup Wires
Glasses recently announced its seed investment from True Ventures along with the launch of its new collection of modular eyewear. The company was established in 2017 by Londonbased designer Yair Neuman and under the creative direction of Lily Cole. Each pair of glasses from Wires’ 2018 collection are crafted with a foundational wire frame that pairs with seven different designs of lens rims in various shapes and colors. The lens rims are interchangeable and can be switched out easily so the wearer can change the look of their eyewear without having to buy a whole new pair. Alongside its modular innovation, the 2018 Wires collection features a frame with a first-of-itskind invisible hinge mechanism, enabling the frame to fold as a result of geometry, not screws. Conscious of the environmental impact of the traditional eyewear
industry, Wires’ co-founders, among them the model, actor and activist Lily Cole and socially conscious entrepreneur Kwame Ferreira, are committed to sustainable design and production. By 3D printing the lens rims and using extruded metal wires, the company reduces the amount of waste that is usually created during eyewear production where rims and frames are cut from larger sheets of material. Additionally, Wires Glasses are handmade by a family-run business in the Italian Dolomites, the heart of Italy’s eyewear industry which is renowned for its quality of production and craftsmanship. When in need of a pair of sunglasses while on vacation, Neuman created what became the Wires Glasses prototype. An inventor with a passion for sustainable design, he constructed himself a pair using materials he had on hand, including a single piece of wire. “Wires is inspired by both ancient African wire artistry
and technological advancements like 3D printing,” said Neuman. “It’s art and science combined.” With this round of funding, Wires will focus on its direct-to-consumer strategy, including building out its ecommerce site and selling its eyewear in exclusive boutiques in the U.S. and Europe. “Wires is creating one of the freshest things I’ve seen in eyewear in a very long time,” said Tony Conrad, partner at True Ventures. “The collection is unique, and the co-founding team has this incredible mix of experience in design, fashion and sustainability. We also like that Yair is focused on designing products that are in line with how the modern consumer thinks.” Wires Glasses come in unisex shapes ranging from the avant-garde to on-trend. Complete pairs retail at $380 (£270) while additional interchangeable lens rims retail for $70 (£50). They are available for www.thechicagocitizen.com
Lily Cole, co-founder of Wires and British, model, actor and entrepreneur; and Ash Stymest, the British model, wearing the 180° from Wires Glasses 2018 collection.

This Second Career Keeps You Rolling! (NAPS)-By 2020, one in t h r e e Americans will be over age 50. If you or someone you care a b o u t expects to be among them, there's something you may want to consider-and it's electric. An electric bike, that is. In fact, a whole shop full of them. Owning an electric bicycle store is an increasingly popular second or third career for many. There are several good reasons: 1. The electric bicycle industry is booming. It's expected to grow 60 percent worldwide by 2025. Pedego, the No. 1 electric bike company in the U.S., has helped more than 100 career want-to-be entrepreneurs open a store. 2. The bikes practically sell themselves. You just have to create an environment where it's fun and easy to buy. 3. Owning a Pedego store is both enjoyable and fulfilling. People who own a store say it's surprisingly good to see the smiles on customers' faces or hear how riding an electric bicycle has changed their lives by expanding their social circles, helping them get fit or ditching their cars for green transportation. 4. The stores are NOT franchises. They're independently owned and operated. You're the boss-but you're not alone. The company offers dealer support and services at no charge and there are no licensing or royalty fees. 5. Opening a Pedego store can be good for your health and happiness as well as your pocket. The store owners tend to be a fit bunch thanks to all the bicycling. Plus, it's a great way to meet people and
have fun. While some retirees find their worlds shrinking as work relationships trail off, electric bike dealers develop new friendships with the customers who join them for group rides. Learn More For further facts and figures, go to www.pedegoelectricbikes.com.
