It is working to modernize and streamline registration and enforcement operations while bolstering investor education.

Giannoulias will serve alongside New Hampshire Secretary of State David Scanlan. The pair will serve until the conclusion of the NASS 2025 Summer Conference.

PhD Project Aims To Diversify Business Leadership

Continued from page 1

The PhD Project was founded in 1994 with a goal to diversify corporate America through diversifying business school faculty.

Its vision is to have a larger pipeline of Black, African American, Latino, Hispanic, Native American and Indigenous business leaders. Students who are interested in getting a doctorate in business receive assistance with the application process, receive support on campus through student groups and receive mentoring when they are faculty on college campuses. There also is the Tenure Project to help guide participants through the tenure process, as well as the Aspiring Leaders Group for those considering going into administration.

often isolating. Oftentimes students in PhD programs are one of two people in their cohort, and they might be the only person of color in their cohort. In addition to the challenges all PhD students face, there also are unique cultural things the students might face. Mason faced this during her PhD journey when she experienced the loss of her father. While her professor didn’t understand why she needed to go home to her family, the people in the PhD project did understand and she was able to rely on them for comfort. Senior faculty members were also able to advise her on how to engage her institution about her situation.

“Because I was in the PhD Project that I was able to navigate some of that stuff through the advice and counsel of senior faculty,” she said.

Dr. Stephani Mason is an Associate Professor of Accounting at DePaul University. She teaches advanced undergraduate and graduate accounting and valuation courses. Mason became involved with the PhD Project because she wanted to make a transition from her Wall Street career and was looking for something more meaningful. She attended the PhD Project Conference and knew getting a PhD was the path she wanted to take.

“So much was given to me as a doctoral student, this is the time that I am obliged by the grace that I’ve been afforded to be able to pay forward some of what was poured into me,” Mason said, adding that if it had not been for the Project, she might not have gotten to the point where she is in her career.

Mason said the journey toward getting a PhD is

When Mason sees her students of color going through the microagressions they are facing on campus, she recognizes things that have happened in her own life and is sensitive to life circumstances they might be going through and can support them through it. Also, as world events seep onto college campuses, Mason was able to provide safe spaces for her students to talk about how they were feeling. Members of the Project have been supporting each other so they can support the students.

Mason said that when students and parents are looking for colleges and universities, she advises them to look at who is on faculty and in the department where a student might major. She encourages parents and students to introduce themselves to faculty members. She said a faculty member can be the difference between a student thriving, surviving or leaving.

Gov. Pritzker Opens New Pace Campus in Markham

MARKHAM – Gov. JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Transportation were joined by community leaders and transit officials to celebrate the completion of Pace’s new Markham campus, a project that modernizes operations and strengthens the agency’s south suburban workforce while advancing safety and the use of more environmentally friendly electric buses. The Markham campus project was made possible by a $7.1 million investment from the governor’s historic, bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital program and an additional $27.1 million in state funding. These improvements further the record investments being made in transit by the state throughout the region.

“Not only does this project make Pace a more efficient and modern part of our transit system, but it also prioritizes clean and efficient energy growth—a win across the board,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “Rebuild Illinois is funding projects like this all across the state, making a stronger Illinois that works better for its people.”

A $40 million project involving federal, state and local funds, Pace’s new south campus includes expanded charging capabilities for the growing electric fleet

and a training section that allows drivers to practice in a contained area instead of on city streets. It also has space for the customer service and safety departments as well as a new facility for buses to be tested and repaired from other Pace garages.

In addition to the new Pace facility, Rebuild Illinois is fueling transformational investments in transit across the Chicago region. Since the passage of the governor’s capital program, Rebuild Illinois has generated $4.1 billion for capital investments by agencies under the Regional Transportation Authority: the Chicago Transit Authority, Metra and Pace.

Passed in 2019, Rebuild Illinois is investing a total of $33.2 billion over six years into the state’s transportation system, creating jobs and promoting economic growth. Rebuild Illinois is not only the largest capital program in state history, but also the first one that touches all modes of Illinois transportation: transit, roads and bridges, waterways, freight and passenger rail, aviation, and bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.

As a PhD Project Advisory Council member, Dr. Stephani Mason knows the importance of representation when students are pursuing a doctoral degree. PHOTO

4 Policy Resolutions Championed By Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller

Approved at NACo Annual Conference

Resolutions are focused on doula services, social media safety, CPR/AED training and environmental justice

COOK COUNTY, Ill. -- Four policy resolutions introduced by 6th District Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller were adopted as full policy resolutions at the National Association of Counties (NACo) conference. The conference, held this year in Tampa, Florida, brings together nearly 2,000 elected and appointed county officials to focus on federal policy issues that impact counties and their residents. Commissioner Miller’s four resolutions focused on maternal health, environmental justice, social media safety and CPR/AED trainings.

“I’m honored to be able to raise awareness of some of the most

pressing issues facing Cook County and ensure county officials across the country are working to address these crucial matters. I’m thrilled to see these four resolutions be adopted as full Policy Resolutions at NACo this year,” said Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller. “During my time in office, I’ve dedicated my work to advocating for increased awareness of cardiovascular health, accessible doula services, social media safety and environmental justice, and I’m glad to receive this recognition at the national level.”

Talking to Kids about Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Alzheimer’s is a disease that impacts the entire family, including children and teens. When a loved one is diagnosed, young people might have questions about what is happening. It’s essential to address these questions openly and honestly and share with them the changes the disease might bring, both now and in the future.

For parents, knowing when and how to talk to children about a loved one’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia can be challenging. To help navigate these conversations, the Alzheimer’s Association offers tips and resources on how to talk to children about Alzheimer’s and dementia, including:

Commissioner Miller’s Resolution in Support of Federal and Local Government Coordination to Advance Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Training and Implementation urges the federal government to increase funding for and work with counties and local community and government agencies to fund and coordinate more robust awareness and training campaigns in CPR/AED. Since she first took office in 2019, Commissioner Miller has made it a priority to use her background in the healthcare industry to educate residents on the risks of cardiovascular disease, how to prevent it, and how to improve outcomes of cardiac events through CPR training.

Commissioner Miller also introduced two interim resolutions that were first addressed at the 2024 NACo February Legislative Conference in Washington DC, including the Proposed Resolution in Support of Federal Funding for Social Media Safety Education and Training, which calls for the federal government to assist counties in educating youth on safe social media usage and its potential dangers, as well as parental outreach and support. The other, Proposed Resolution in Support of Federal Funding for Doula and Social Support Services Training, advocates for federal funds to go towards the implementation of doula services with the goal of addressing maternal mortality rates, which have historically been higher than the national average and disproportionately affect mothers of color. In recent years, Commissioner Miller has led efforts to improve maternal healthcare in Cook County by supporting doulas and raising awareness on the disparities in care.

1. Be open and honest. When a friend or family member has Alzheimer’s, children may feel upset, confused, or scared. It’s crucial to be honest and clear with them about what’s happening. If possible, include the person diagnosed in these conversations. This inclusion can help demystify the disease and foster a sense of involvement and understanding.

2. Learn about the disease. Educating children and teens about Alzheimer’s and dementia can help them understand what to expect and how to connect with the person they care about. The Alzheimer’s Association offers a Parent’s Guide: Helping Children and Teens Understand Alzheimer’s Disease (https:// bit.ly/3YkDV4e), which includes commonly asked questions and sample answers. This resource can be an excellent starting point for parents and caregivers to address the concerns of young people thoughtfully and accurately.

Both the CPR/ AED and the Justice40 resolutions first passed at the 2023 NACo conference, and were adopted again for the upcoming year.

The NACo resolutions process provides members with the ability to create national policies affecting county governments. Resolutions may be introduced at NACo conferences, including the Annual Conference, Legislative Conference or, in some cases, any other conference where the NACo Board of Directors convenes.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) unites America’s 3,069 county governments. Founded in 1935, NACo brings county officials together to advocate with a collective voice on national policy, exchange ideas and build new leadership skills, pursue transformational county solutions, enrich the public’s understanding of county government, and exercise exemplary leadership in public service.

For the first time in the region’s history, Rebuild Illinois created a dedicated funding stream for transit via the state motor fuel tax, which is generating an average of $250 million a year in sustained revenue through PayGo for projects and capital needs at the CTA, Metra and Pace long after the bonding capital program expires.

“Rebuild Illinois has been a gamechanger for transit in the Chicago area and our entire system of multimodal transportation in Illinois,”

said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “Under Gov. Pritzker, IDOT is proud to help deliver these important projects that ultimately make buses and trains safer, more reliable and accessible for the public.”

The Markham site is anticipated to spur additional economic development due to Pace hosting training at the new facility for its existing workers as well as recruiting new employees from the surrounding area.

3. Activities for connection: Spending time with a family member or friend with Alzheimer’s can be meaningful and enjoyable. Take your cue from the person with Alzheimer’s—What do they like to do? What are they able to do? What are they in the mood for today? The Alzheimer’s Association offers a list of activity ideas (https://bit.ly/3YkZ7Hg) that can help maintain a bond and create positive experiences. These activities can range from simple games to reminiscing about old photos, providing a way to stay connected and engaged.

4. Resources are available: The Alzheimer’s Association Kids and Teens (https://www.alz.org/ help-support/resources/kids-teens)section provides valuable information to help young people learn more about Alzheimer’s disease and how it affects the people they love. This section includes book selections, helpful resource links, and videos tailored to younger audiences. These resources can provide comfort and understanding, making the disease less intimidating.

Approximately one-quarter of the more than 11 million dementia caregivers are “sandwich generation” caregivers—those who care not only for an aging parent but also for children under age 18. This dual responsibility can be particularly taxing, making it even more critical to have open lines of communication within the family. By addressing the needs and questions of children and teens, caregivers can create a supportive environment that acknowledges everyone’s emotions and fosters resilience.

Alzheimer’s disease affects the entire family, and it’s essential to include children and teens in the conversation. By being open, honest, and informed, and by engaging in meaningful activities, families can navigate the challenges of Alzheimer’s together. The Alzheimer’s Association offers a wealth of resources to support families through this journey, ensuring that no one has to face it alone.

Surge Angels Program Awards $100,000 to Three Ventures Founded by Education Leaders of Color

CHICAGO, PRNewswire -- Surge Institute, a trailblazing organization that empowers leaders of color in education, recently awarded $100,000 in funding through its Surge Angels program to three early-stage ventures run by Black, Latinx, Asian and Pacific Islander education leaders. The awards were determined and announced on Friday, June 28, in Chicago during a special Pitch Night event, culminating in the intensive six-month Surge Angels entrepreneurial development program.

This year’s event celebrated the hard work, dedication and visions of 10 Surge Institute Alumni, culminating in a grand showcase where three founders were honored with substantial prize money. The event started with an introduction from Tiara Wheatley, Surge Institute’s Vice President of Alumni Impact. Chief External Affairs Officer Will Collins welcomed guests, founders and investors who were there in person and watching via livestream.

Overall Placement:

1st Place, with an award of $50,000: Marcus Wilson (DC22), Founder & CEO of The Village Network

2nd Place, with an award of $30,000: Cescily Phillips (KC20), Founder & Executive Director of Inspired Aesthetics

3rd Place, with an award of $20,000: Naomi Fierro Peña (OAK22), Founder & CEO of That Art Party

The Surge Angels program is designed to support the entrepreneurial aspirations of Surge Alumni, providing them with the resources, mentorship and capital necessary to bring their innovative ideas to life. Participants received intensive training in business fundamentals, strategic planning, financial management and marketing, preparing them to secure funding and incubate their innovative entrepreneurial ventures grounded in service to their communities. Additionally, each participant was paired with an executive coach experienced in entrepreneurship, ensuring tailored guidance and support.

The program culminates in Pitch Night, where each participant can present their venture plans to Angel investors in hopes of securing funding. On June 28, after considering pitches from the 10 founders in this year’s Surge Angels cohort, the panel of Angel investors funded the growth and development of the top three ventures.

The Village Network, based in Washington, D.C., is a collection of programming initiatives supporting youth and educational leaders’ diverse needs and interests. The organization believes in the inherent power of community and seeks to empower its communities through relationship, resource and capacity building. Wilson said he was overcome with emotion when he heard his name called and added that he must pour into Black and Brown youth the way people poured into him.

“I’ve been so fortunate throughout my life to be surrounded by genuine love, whether it’s family, friends, teachers, mentors or co-workers,” said Wilson, who went full-time with his venture in May. “The Surge Angels fellowship has allowed me to think about a business plan, a budget, marketing—all of these different things that will help not only the programming aspect but the administrative side of running an organization.”

Inspired Aesthetics envisions a community where young Black and Brown people who want to learn more about art, cooking or engineering have places within reach to do so—and can learn from people who look like them.

That Art Party combines Fierro Peña’s love of art and play with her professional skills to curate artistic experiences for BIPOC adults to nourish their inner child and play as a tool for liberation.

Other ventures in this cohort included youth wellness

solutions, a residential fellowship for Black high school students experiencing homelessness, a youth STEM education program and a program that increases the visibility of Black girls excelling in math.

“This year’s cohort of founders represents the brilliance that is our growing and dynamic Surge Alumni Community,” said Wheatley, also a 2020 Surge Chicago alumna herself. “These leaders are transforming lives, communities and schools for students nationwide. We are extremely proud of all of our founders and the work they’ve done to chase and accomplish their Freedom Dreams.”

The Surge Angels funding prizes will give the winning founders the capital needed to move their ventures toward more impactful implementation or growth. Surge Institute believes that by investing in these leaders, is not only supporting individual entrepreneurial journeys but also contributing to a broader movement of educational equity and excellence.

“Surge was always designed to support and elevate brilliant and bold leaders with big dreams to transform education,” said Surge Institute Founder and CEO Carmita Semaan. “The Surge Angels program is our opportunity and honor to continue that work with our alumni and invest directly into their visions. I am so inspired by what all 10 of these founders presented, and I am confident they will all take their work to the next level.”

Surge Institute is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that was established with a simple but important mission: To develop and elevate leaders of color who create transformative change for children, families and communities. Founded by Carmita Semaan in 2014, the organization was designed to empower emerging diverse leaders to change the landscape of education by providing them with a unique, authentic leadership development experience.

Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand Invest Over $8 Million in Black Community Commitment Grants

(Black PR Wire) Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand are announcing over $8 million in grants to 37 organizations through their Black Community Commitment (BCC). Created in 2020, the Jordan Black Community Commitment — a joint and equal 10-year, $100 million initiative of Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand — is focused on leading sustainable change to impact the fight against systemic racism and create more equitable futures for Black Americans.

Aligned across the BCC’s four key pillars (education, economic justice, narrative change and social justice), the most recent grants were distributed to 14 nonprofit institutional grantees and 23 grassroots organizations across the country leading solutions in their cities through the open-call Community Grants Program, which is inspired by the power of local decisions to create systemic change.

BET MUSIC NAMES RISING COUNTRY SENSATION TANNER ADELL AS THE ‘BET AMPLIFIED’ PRESENTED BY NISSAN ARTIST FOR JULY

(Black PR Wire) New York, NY – BET Music and Nissan are teaming up to shine a spotlight on rising Black stars in the music world, and they’re kicking things off with none other than the dynamic Cali-bred Country sensation, Tanner Adell. Fresh off of an electrifying debut performance on Nissan’s BET Amplified stage during Culture’s Biggest Night, BET Awards 2024, Tanner Adell also takes the BET Amplified Artist of the Month crown this July, bringing her fresh, unapologetic take on Country music to the forefront.

Tanner Adell burst onto the scene last year with her debut mixtape Buckle Bunny, earning major props from The New York Times, NPR, Billboard, MusicRow, and more. With hits like “I Hate Texas,” where she spills the tea on a messy breakup, to viral favorites like “Buckle Bunny,” Tanner’s got a knack for mixing raw honesty with infectious beats. Her unique sound is set to take her straight to stardom, and BET and Nissan are here for it.

Tanner’s roots are as diverse as her sound. From summers in Wyoming learning to drive four-wheelers and cars at a young age, to belting out Phantom of the Opera, her childhood was a blend of wild freedom and deep musical passion. And, Tanner’s humble beginnings have cultivated an artist whose musical prowess has taken her from the country all the way to Cowboy Carter, receiving the ultimate cosign singing on Beyonce’s blockbuster album of 2024.

BET Socials, and BET’s Official YouTube Page. Previous BET Amplified artists include 41, Ambré, Armani White, Asake, Big Boss Vette, BossMan Dlow, Coco Jones, Connie Diiamond, Fridayy, HDBeenDope, Kaliii, Lady London, Lakeyah, Larry June, Lola Brooke, Maiya The Don, October London, Skilla Baby, That Mexican OT and more!

Tanner Adell can now add BET Amplified Artists to her list of accolades. And, what better way to celebrate than performing on the BET Amplified stage on Culture’s biggest night, BET Awards 2024? Recently signed to Atlanta-based label LVRN, Tanner Adell is poised to continue taking her country roots outside the walls of Nashville and onto the world stage.

As a BET Amplified artist, Tanner Adell will receive BET Music’s support across multiple BET campaigns and platforms, including BET, BET Her, BET Jams, BET Soul, BET.com,

Tanner Adell is here to unapologetically pave her own lane in Country music. Brought up between the coast of Manhattan Beach, California and the rustic charm of Star Valley, Wyoming, the songstress lived a free-spirited childhood in the country, complete with cowboy boots and rodeos. Weaving the tales of her upbringing through her musical storytelling, Tanner’s lyricism keeps its roots in Country while infusing an addictive blend of pop vocals and hip-hop beats. Tanner spills out energetic tunes and honest ballads that draw upon her personal narrative as a biracial woman embracing the truest version of herself. Hear Tanner reclaim the power back for the girls with her July 2023 debut mixtape, Buckle Bunny, a first-ofits-kind in the Country genre, which earned praise from The New York Times, NPR, Billboard, MusicRow and more. As fans continue to discover and rave over Tanner’s unique style through her Buckle Bunny mixtape, she continues to have a huge 2024 of new music and touring while she graces the stage at some of the biggest domestic and international festivals including Faster Horses and Golden Sky, already checking off C2C, Stagecoach and Hangout Festival. Tanner continues to keep fans on the edge of their seat, pushing the genre boundaries yet again in the forthcoming pop-infused get-over-you anthem, “Whiskey Blues,” Twisters soundtrack feature “Too Easy,” and summer bop “Cowboy Break My Heart,” out now. She made her TV performance debut on the Jennifer Hudson Show earlier this year and most recently performed on the 2024 BET Awards. The rising star promises to keep reimagining music with unbridled innovation while making her mark on Music City and beyond.

MONEY

6 Scams Every Older American Should Know About (StatePoint) Amid technology advances enabling scammers to commit fraud, elders and their loved ones need to stay informed.

Typically, elder scams involve the transfer of money to a stranger or imposter for a promised benefit or good. In 2023, banks reported more than $27 billion in suspicious activity related to elder scams, according to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, and reports filed by the public to the Federal Bureau of Investigation indicated an average loss of more than $33,000 per case. And these numbers may be conservative, as elder fraud cases may be underreported.

Most scams targeting elders generally follow one or two main strategies: 1) elicit strong feelings and apply a sense of urgency to get someone to act quickly before thinking, and/or 2) entice someone with an offer that seems too good to be true, yet too alluring to pass up. Here are some of the more common types of elder scams:

Scams That Apply a Sense of Urgency:

• Tech Support. Someone will claim they need to remotely access the victim’s computer to fix a software problem, then use that access to steal personal or financial information.

• Government Imposter. The fraudster may tell the victim they owe a debt that must be paid immediately or face arrest, asset seizure or termination of benefits.

• Grandparent. An elaborate story is given by phone and sometimes involves a voice print of an actual grandchild, claiming a loved one is in trouble and needs money to be protected.

Scams That Offer Something Too Good to Be True:

• Investment. The scammer makes claims of a high-return investment to trick the victim into giving them money, often asking to be paid in an unconventional way, like cryptocurrency, where there’s little to no chance of recovering the funds.

• Romance. The scammer develops a fake identity and creates the illusion of a romantic relationship to manipulate or steal from the victim.

• Lottery/Sweepstakes. Scammers make contact by phone or mail to tell the victim they’ve won the lottery or a sweepstakes but claim the elder has to remit a processing fee before they can get their prize.

Take Protective Measures and Stay Alert

The most effective way of preventing fraud is to pause when being rushed and take time to verify the legitimacy of both the person making contact and their claims. To reduce the odds of your voice being cloned, experts suggest exercising caution when speaking on the phone with strangers. If someone unfamiliar contacts you, disconnect from the original communication channel, verify their identity, then attempt to make contact through a different channel. For instance, hang
