‘The Forge’ Shows The Power Of Mentorship, Forgiveness And Discipleship
BY TIA CAROL JONES
“The Forge” comes from the Kendrick Brothers, the creator of “Overcomer,” “Courageous,” and “War Room.” Isaiah is a 19-year-old who gets employed at Moore Fitness and meets the owner introduces him to a group of men who can change his life.
Priscilla Shirer, who plays the mother Cynthia, also was in “War Room.” Shirer has such admiration for the Kendrick Brothers and said they have so much integrity in their writing.
“They really want to unapologetically honor the Lord and they write good stories. So, I wanted to be a part of it because I appreciate their integrity in that way,” Shirer said.
She also wanted to be part of “The Forge” because when she read the script, they wanted her to play the part of a mother with a 19-year old son. Shirer has three sons who are 22, 20 and 15 and so it felt very personal to her. While Shirer has raised sons, she had questions that she asked other women because she wanted their vantage point and perspective how they dealt with their sons and daughters in the transitions of the end of teenage years to adult years. She also wanted to know about the impact other people had in the transition for those children.
“As parents, we do what we can, but you can say the exact same thing that a coach says or a teacher says or an influential person says and somehow they absorb it differently,” Shirer said.
Aspen Kennedy, who plays Isaiah, said it was very personal to him. Working with the Kendrick Brothers and seeing how they honor the Lord, resonated with him. Kennedy grew up without his father and seeing what he went through in script form playing Isaiah really sparked his heart. He was grateful to be part of the movie. To prepare for his role, Kennedy did a lot of praying and training with his coach. He dived in and got his heart ready.
Kennedy said the prevailing themes of the movie are discipleship, forgiveness, keeping Christ at the center and truly having faith in God. Shirer added, the power of mentorship is another prevailing theme of the movie. She said the value placed on mentorship is being lost.
“It mattered when an adult looked a kid in the eyes and vice versa and that young person felt valued because they
were listened to, someone cares enough about them to ask them questions, and to correct them, to challenge them, to offer them some discipline and insight,” Shirer said. She added, there is so much strength when someone with more wisdom, strength and maturity really invest in the life of someone who is younger than them.
Kennedy said the prayers of his mother changed his life because it showed him who God was in his life. No matter what they did not have, his mother gave her best. The first example of prayer came from his mother. It is something he has kept with him on his journey.
Shirer who has been married for 25 years and her husband’s mother prayed that her two sons would be different than their father, uncles and grandfather. Those men hadn’t been faithful to God or their families.
“Miss Mary, my mother-in-law, who is now in heaven, prayed that her sons would be different and the result of that prayer is that I’ve been married for 25 years to a man who has character and has integrity and he has broken the generational line of their family line. That means everything to me because now we have three sons, who have an entirely new legacy because one woman decided to shift the trajectory of her family,” Shirer said.
Kennedy said he wants people to take away from the film what happens when you truly forgive someone, trust the Lord, when people pour into other people, without expectations, and just truly want to help people. Shirer said there is a strong lesson in what it means to be a disciple of Christ. She said it is one thing to be a believer, it is another thing to be a disciple; it is a higher cost than being a believer, which is a free gift. Being a disciple, Shirer said, requires sacrifice and surrender.
Kennedy hopes people who see the film will start their own “forges” and allow the Lord to pour into them so they can pour into someone else. Shirer said when people see the representation of the men’s discipleship group, they will form groups where men and women who are more seasoned will connect with those who are less experienced and come alongside them and share what they’ve learned.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE CONTINUES EFFORTS TO REDUCE GUN VIOLENCE THROUGH FOCUSED FIREARM ENFORCEMENT DETAILS
SPRINGFIELD – To help ensure those who are prohibited by law from having a firearm, and who pose a threat, do not have guns in their possession, the Illinois State Police (ISP) conducted numerous firearm enforcement details in counties across the state from June 24 through July 19, 2024. The enforcement details focused on individuals who have become the subject of a Firearms Restraining Order or Clear and Present Danger, or received a criminal conviction, among other reasons.
“Firearms Restraining Orders and Clear and Present Danger reporting are two highly effective tools for getting firearms out of the hands of someone who poses a significant threat to themselves or others,” said Brendan F. Kelly. “As the use of these tools increases, so does the need for law enforcement to be able to safely conduct these arduous, intensive enforcement details.”
From July 2023 through June 2024, ISP received approximately 11,300 Clear and Present Danger reports, of which more than 10,800 were affirmed. While not all
of those 10,800 individuals are out of compliance with state law, law enforcement is able to take action on those who are to bring them into compliance, thereby making communities safer.
During the recent ISP focused enforcement details, ISP officers completed 192 details and brought 673 people into compliance with state law. As a result of these efforts, 318 individuals transferred firearms out of their possession. ISP has been conducting firearm enforcement details since May 2019. From that time through July 2024, ISP has conducted 2,303 details and placed 5,549 individuals into compliance with the law.
In addition to its own efforts, ISP provides grants to local law enforcement agencies to help protect the public by transferring firearms out of the possession of a person legally prohibited from having a firearm and who is a danger to themselves or others.

Gov. Pritzker Signs Veteran’s Consumer Fraud Bill
SB3479 expands protections for veterans in Illinois seeking services
CHICAGO -- Governor JB Pritzker signed SB3479 into law, also known as the Veteran’s Consumer Fraud Bill. The legislation broadens the definition of “veteran or military benefits services” to include any consultation services that would assist in obtaining, changing, or appealing benefits decisions. The bill also targets predatory “claim sharks,” or nonVA accredited individuals or companies that charge for consultation and filing services. These services are offered for free through government and non-profits across Illinois.
disclosure orally and in writing at the outset of a business relationship is an unlawful practice. Under current law, all private businesses must inform potential clients that consultation services are provided for free by local, state and federal governments.
The new legislation goes into effect January 1, 2025.
Fighting for a different future
The Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter is thrilled to announce the Alzheimer’s Association Chicago Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Soldier Field’s Southeast Lawn.
“Our state’s veterans and military members always deserve clarity and protection when navigating the social services process,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “With these amendments to the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act, we can ensure claim sharks are prevented from charging Illinoisans hefty fees for services that are offered for free statewide. I want to thank my partners in the General Assembly, especially this bill’s chief sponsors: Senator Mike Porfirio and Representative Stephanie Kifowit, for their dedication to getting this bill passed.”
The legislation makes three substantive changes to the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act:
Adds language to the definition of “veteran or military benefits services” to include “consulting or coaching in the preparation, presentation, or prosecution of claims or other attempts to obtain benefits” as a service.
“IDVA has heard unimaginable stories from veterans who have lost thousands of dollars of their earned benefits to services taking advantage of them, often at their most vulnerable,” said IDVA Director Terry Prince. “We are grateful to the bill’s sponsors Senator Mike Porfirio & Representative Stephanie Kifowit, and Governor Pritzker for advocating for veterans by securing these important protections. We encourage veterans to contact IDVA Veterans Service Officers positioned around the state and equipped to help them navigate their benefits and services, free of charge.”
At the Alzheimer’s Association, we’re fighting for a brighter future—a future without Alzheimer’s. For families facing the disease today, for more time with loved ones, and for groundbreaking treatments, we are closer than ever to stopping Alzheimer’s. But to reach this goal, we need you. Join us for the world’s largest fundraiser to fight Alzheimer’s and all other dementias.
“This is a pivotal moment in the fight against Alzheimer’s. There are now treatments that change the course of the disease,” said, Mary DeMars, Alzheimer’s Association Walk Director “We hope that everyone in our community can join us by starting a team to help the Alzheimer’s Association raise awareness and funds for families facing the disease today, take more steps toward treatments and finally ending this disease.”

Adds disclosure language to ensure veterans and military members are better informed about the services offered to them. Additionally, all county veteran service officers must now be VA accredited.
Adds language to clarify that failure to provide a veteran’s services
“I want to thank Governor Pritzker for signing this important piece of legislation, and I applaud Attorney General Kwame Raoul and the outstanding team at the Military and Veterans Rights Bureau in the Office of the Attorney General for their help and support on this legislation and all they do every day to protect and serve veterans in the state of Illinois. It is our duty to protect and respect our nation’s veterans, not make them a victim to predatory practices,” said State Senator Mike Porfirio (D-Lyons Township). “The enactment of this law ensures those who offer veteran and military benefits are held to the highest standards, safeguarding our military heroes from exploitation. The benefits they earned through their service and sacrifice should go into the pockets of veterans themselves so they can pursue the American dream for which they fought and served.”

In Fiscal Year 2024, ISP awarded almost $1 million in firearm enforcement grants to 16 law enforcement agencies across the state. During that time, local law enforcement agencies completed 7,048 compliance checks and brought 2,101 people into compliance with state law by transferring all firearms out of their possession and documenting that transfer with a Firearm Disposition Record. ISP awarded another $1.5 million in grants to 21 law enforcement agencies in Fiscal Year 2025.
Law enforcement agencies that are members of the Violent Crime Intelligence Task Force are eligible to
receive grants from the State Police Enforcement Fund. Funding helps agencies conduct firearms enforcement details and ensure firearms are turned over to a person who is legally allowed to possess firearms, or to law enforcement.
Funding for the enforcement grants comes from the State Police Enforcement Fund and were made possible through Public Act 1020237.
Along with enforcement details, between 2020 and the end of June 2024, ISP stopped more than 139,000 unlawful attempts to obtain a firearm through firearm eligibility checks.

Hebru Brantley to Unveil New Permanent Commission at THE COLLECTION: Where Art Meets Fashion at Fashion Outlets of Chicago
ROSEMONT, Ill. – THE COLLECTION: Where Art Meets Fashion, the multifaceted contemporary art program located within Fashion Outlets of Chicago, with support from the Village of Rosemont, today announced the program’s newest site-specific installation, Midnight Blue, by celebrated Chicago-native artist Hebru Brantley featuring his iconic Flyboy character. The permanent work will make its debut at the center on Friday, Sept. 20.
“When we established THE COLLECTION, we set out to provide Fashion Outlets of Chicago shoppers with an unparalleled, yet approachable visual art experience,” said Katie Walsh, Senior Marketing Manager at Fashion Outlets of Chicago.
“With the addition of this incredible work by an artist as iconic as Hebru Brantley, we are demonstrating our commitment to providing world-class, museum-quality work to the public in an unexpected, unique setting.”
Enigmatic and abstract, Midnight Blue draws inspiration from the world of Jazz, particularly the atmosphere created in the classic tune, “Round Midnight.” The focus of the work is on capturing a feeling – a state of being lost in the moment, carried away by the interplay of colors and shapes. These colors themselves become a dreamscape, inviting the viewer to surrender to their own interpretation. Using shapes that hint at camouflage, the work introduces a layer of tension, reflecting the artist’s desire to create a
work that resonates on an emotional level, similar to the power of music, all while existing in a dynamic relationship with its environment.
“Ultimately, Midnight Blue is about setting a mood, a vibe, just as a great Jazz piece can transport the listener,” said Brantley. “This commission by Fashion Outlets of Chicago was an incredible opportunity to create a work that is simultaneously unexpected and immersive. I’m thrilled to join my colleagues and friends represented in THE COLLECTION and I can’t wait for visitors to engage with Midnight Blue for years to come.”
Known for his distinctive, narrative-driven work that revolves around conceptualized characters, Brantley utilizes the characters to address complex ideas while exploring color palettes, motifs and the characters themselves to create an air of innocence around his layered and multifaceted works.

ATTORNEY GENERAL RAOUL ANNOUNCES MULTISTATE SETTLEMENT WITH CAMEO FOR VIOLATING CONSUMER PROTECTION LAWS
Chicago – Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced a settlement with Baron App Inc. (Cameo) resolving an investigation into Cameo’s violation of consumer protection laws by not providing appropriate disclosures to consumers who purchased video business messages using the popular personalized video service.
As part of the agreed settlement announced by a bipartisan coalition of 30 attorneys general, Cameo will establish and maintain programs and policies to help ensure its website and mobile applications users comply with all applicable state and federal laws, including the FTC’s Endorsement Guides. Cameo will also implement a watermark system for paid advertisements, implement a system for legal disclosures to and acknowledgements from all celebrities and consumers and monitor paid advertisements for compliance and establish reporting mechanisms for non-compliant Cameo videos.
“Today’s settlement ensures Cameo is held accountable after the company failed to follow state and federal laws intended to protect consumers,” Raoul said. “I will continue to work with fellow attorneys general to protect Illinoisans and consumers across the nation from fraud and deceptive business practices.”
Raoul and the coalition’s investigation found potential violations of states’ consumer protection statutes and the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) Endorsement Guides’ paid advertiser disclosure requirements. Raoul and the coalition allege that Cameo failed to provide appropriate disclosures to consumers purchasing personalized video business messages that an endorsement of a product is a paid endorsement. Additionally, the investigation showed Cameo failed to refund users who paid for the business Cameo feature but mistakenly signed up for the less-expensive personal message Cameos.
Joining Raoul in announcing today’s settlement are the attorneys general of Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
Op-Ed: Embracing a New Era: Whittney Smith’s Vision for the Future with Kamala
Harris
As Deputy Director and Counsel for Lawndale Christian Development Corporation, I am filled with excitement at the groundswell of energy for Kamala Harris’ candidacy for President. LCDC does not endorse any candidate for public office, however, the policies VP Harris supported during her career largely align with our mission.
Reverand Dr. Marshall Hatch
Sr. preached on July 28th that “America was about to find out {that} Black women have long been the life blood of this country.” This was evidenced when VP Harris’ candidacy announcement was immediate followed by a fundraising video call dubbed #WinwithBlackwomen.
This momentum shifting effort began a trend that raised over $100 million dollars in 2 days. The power and innovativeness of Black women as decisive change makers for the betterment and longevity of our democracy was on full display.
VP Harris’ potential presidency represents more than just a historic milestone. It embodies a vision that resonates deeply with our mission at LCDC to organize with local leaders to revitalize North Lawndale through economic development and community empowerment. While VP Harris has undoubtedly risen to the moment, this moment’s lasting legacy will be the steadying influence and impact of collective action. Likewise, it is community power that has aided LCDC in harnessing over $120 million of real estate investment to improve the lives of residents.
At LCDC, we are driven by the belief that every community deserves a chance to flourish. VP Harris’ leadership could usher in a new chapter of growth and resilience. As we celebrate her achievements and anticipate her impact, we at LCDC remain firm in our commitment to serve our community. Together, we can turn our aspirations into reality and ensure that every neighborhood thrives.

Unlocks the Secrets to Strong Relationships in Latest Book, “Lazy Love”
HOUSTON, PRNewswire -- Pastor Keion Henderson, bestselling author, spiritual leader, and renowned pastor of The Lighthouse Church and Ministries in Houston, announces the release of his latest book, Lazy Love: Recognizing and Reversing the 4 Threats to any Successful Relationship, a profound exploration of the ways in which we often fall short in our relationships. The book is set to inspire readers to break free from negative patterns within personal relationships and find deeper satisfaction through learning to love better. This release marks the second title from Pastor Henderson, following the successful 2020 release of his book, The SHIFT: Courageously Moving From Season to Season.
Lazy Love addresses the common pitfalls that prevent us from experiencing the deep, soulful fulfillment that comes from loving well. “Humans are meant to love and be loved, but so often we fall short at loving well,” says Pastor Henderson. “We take others for granted. We make assumptions. We forget to show our affection. We grow lazy. This prevents us from being fully known and enjoyed by those around us and stops us from giving who we are without expecting anything in return.”

Seventy HACC Youth Graduate from Summer Jobs Program in the Forest Preserves of Cook County
High school students learn skills to serve them for the future
(South Holland, IL) – A summer of learning, outdoor exploration and service culminated this morning in a graduation ceremony for 70 Cook County youth at South Suburban College in South Holland. Now in its ninth year, the Forest Preserve Experience (FPE) is a collaborative program coordinated by Friends of the Forest Preserves and the Forest Preserves of Cook County, with generous support from the Cook County Bureau of Economic Development, the Housing Authority of Cook County (HACC), the Forest Preserve Foundation, and others. “This program would not be possible without the hard work and partnership of these organizations, who work tirelessly to provide the youth with incredible opportunities to explore potential careers paths as well as experience Cook County’s natural beauty,” said Cook County Board and Forest Preserves President Toni Preckwinkle. “I am also grateful that the Cook County Bureau of Economic Development was able to once again provide additional funding to the Forest Preserve Experience thanks to the American Rescue Plan Act.”
For five weeks this summer, young people ages 14-19 who live in households that receive services from HACC worked in crews at several Forest Preserves sites in the south and southwest suburbs, learning about environmental conservation and contributing to the health and beauty of the preserves.
“The youth participating in the Forest Preserve Experience did incredible things this summer; at five different sites, they completed more than 2,000 hours of conservation service. They helped restore land to ecological health, and they learned about
" jobs in the environment and conservation fields, as well as career readiness skills like teamwork, communication skills and more,” said Forest Preserves Interim General Superintendent Eileen Figel.
We consider it an honor to work with the next generation in caring for our forest preserves and our planet," said Radhika Miraglia, Program Director of Friends of the Forest Preserves. "The FPE program nurtures a connection between young p eople and nature, while training them in job skills such as teamwork, goal-setting, diversity and inclusion, financial
literacy, and more."
Most crew members worked at Forest Preserves sites near their homes, allowing them to engage in projects that their families and communities would most easily be able to enjoy. In addition to career and life skills workshops, the summer included a variety of recreational outings and activities, ranging from kayaking local waterways to visiting Brookfield Zoo.
“Every year this program takes a proactive stance to ensure that our youth are exposed to the County's green spaces. Which enables these bright young minds to expand their future career aspirations and options," said HACC Executive Director Danita Childers. "This breathtaking opportunity is possible thanks to our relationship with the Forest Preserves and the Friends of the Forest Preserves.”
A special element of the Forest Preserve Experience is the opportunity to develop leadership skills. Crew members work and learn under the guidance of crew leaders, many of whom are themselves former crew members, and many of the youth return for multiple summers.
"The Foundation is committed to keeping the Preserves and communities healthy. One way we accomplish this is by investing in the next generation of environmental leaders," said Forest Preserve Foundation President and Executive Director Debra Walker Johnson. “The Program provides young people with a great opportunity to learn about nature and help protect the environment. We are pleased to make a difference in the futures of young people and are grateful to them for contributing to our planet's future."

America’s High School Students to Descend Upon Walt Disney World Resort f or HBCU Week Foundation College Fair in October
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., PRNewswire --
The HBCU Week Foundation is bringing its college fair to Walt Disney World Resort for the second time, continuing Walt Disney World’s support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
The HBCU Week Foundation is a nonprofit organization that encourages high school age youth to enroll into HBCUs, provides scholarship dollars for matriculation and sustains a pipeline for employment from undergraduate school to corporate America. It’s a two-day event that takes place every other year and is happening Oct. 23-24 this year at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, which last hosted the event in 2022.
The event will feature a reception along with a college fair that’s expected to draw nearly 8,000 high school students from across the Southeast and beyond, making it one of the foundation’s largest-ever. On hand will be more than 40 representatives from the nation’s HBCUs, some of whom will be granting on-the-spot admissions and four-year scholarships worth millions of dollars.
And there will be lots of Disney magic sprinkled throughout the event, including appearances by beloved Disney characters, entertainment, music and some special surprise moments that can only happen at The Most Magical Place on Earth.
The 2022 event at Walt Disney World featured more than 8,000 attendees and over $11 million in scholarships, which were both event records at that time.
“I am incredibly grateful to Walt Disney World Resort for its unwavering support in providing high school students with the opportunity to participate in one of the largest college fairs in the nation,” says Ashley Christopher, founder
of HBCU Week Foundation. “Their commitment not only opens doors to HBCUs, but also paves a path towards a debt-free education for these bright young minds. Together, we are shaping a future where dreams know no financial barriers.”
Walt Disney World’s support of the HBCU Week Foundation College Fair is part of an ongoing collaboration between the foundation and Disney on the Yard, an initiative focused on deepening Disney’s engagement with HBCUs. By working closely with HBCUs, Disney aims to continue building a long-term
pipeline for HBCU graduates through the development of student internships, mentorship opportunities, career and employee spotlights, scholarships and more.
“It’s incredibly heartwarming to see the smiles and excitement on these students’ faces when they receive acceptance letters and scholarships,” says Avis Lewis, executive champion of Disney on the Yard. “This kind of joy fuels Disney’s commitment to supporting this event and Disney on the Yard. We want to provide these students with the chance to attend college and pursue successful careers, and we view this as just the beginning of their journey.”
Likewise, the HBCU Week Foundation plans to deepen its commitment to supporting HBCUs through a recent $1 million grant, which will assist in expanding the foundation’s ongoing efforts to advance HBCU enrollment, offer academic scholarships and guide students through successful transitions from university life to professional careers.
For more information about the HBCU Week Foundation College Fair and for students to register for the college fair, visit www.HBCUWeek.org.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT ACTING SECRETARY ADRIANNE TODMAN
ADDRESSED THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REAL ESTATE BROKERS 76th ANNUAL CONVENTION
NEW ORLEANS – Delivering the keynote speech at the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) Annual Convention, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Acting Secretary Adrianne Todman applauded NAREB for policies and practices advancing Black wealth. She also cited HUD’s many accomplishments during the Biden-Harris administration, such as “helping hundreds of thousands of families keep their home when times were tough during the pandemic.”
Acting Secretary Todman praised her predecessor, HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge, saying, “People kind of forget what it was like when we entered our jobs in 2021. But it wasn’t pretty, was it? No. So we stood up programs” that supported families.
Further, she cited improvements in the housing counseling services. “We did common sense changes in our hard homeownership process. Things like when interest rates went up, it was our Vice President (Kamala Harris) who announced cuts in HUD’s mortgage fees…cuts that today has netted over $800 million in savings for homeowners. Just in the past year, we changed the way that we looked at our underwriting. We got smart about how we looked at student loan debt and making if someone who is becoming a homeowner for the first time, the only thing they have to show is how they’ve paid their rent.”
Acting Secretary Todman congratulated NAREB for working to help families build generational wealth. “I applaud you, and given the partnership that you have with not just HUD but the Biden-Harris administration, I bring you greetings from our president, Joe Biden, and I bring you warm greetings from the fierce and fearless Vice President Kamala Harris.”
Calling NAREB President Dr. Courtney Johnson Rose an “extraordinary leader,” she said, “I met her for the first time last year, and she is rocking and rolling, hasn’t she? Yes, absolutely. So proud of her work. And I also want to thank Renee Wilson for the great job that she has been doing to lead this organization. Thank you, Renee. For decades you have helped generations of Black people restore their faith in the American Dream. You’ve helped them build and rebuild wealth through home ownership and retain hope that our children and grandchildren can have the bright and successful future that they deserve. Your commitment to pursuing Democracy in Housing has endured despite the obstacles, redlining and discrimination, predatory lending.”
Also appearing at the opening session on August 1 were New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, who welcomed NAREB members to New Orleans; Percy Miller (Master P), Business Tycoon and Music Mogul; Ewunike Brady, Head of Home Lending, African American Segment, for Wells Fargo; and Ashley Thomas, NABJ’s 1st Vice President.
“The city of New Orleans is thankful to you for hosting your 76th conference in a city that matters,” said Mayor Cantrell. “I can’t think, think of anyone else that I would wat to be in the trenches with moving this country, moving our communities along, then being with you.”
Over four days, NAREB hosted a series of comprehensive panels, sessions, and workshops providing its members, known as Realtists, with data, counsel, and information that will better prepare them to assist consumers, particularly Black families, and individuals, with selling and buying homes, and building Black wealth, for instance.
NAREB is committed to increasing Black homeownership, the leading driver of Black wealth. The BlackWhite wealth gap is so expansive in the United States that the 400 wealthiest Americans control the same wealth as all 48 million Blacks living in the country. The wealth imbalances perpetuate the racial disparities in housing, education, employment, income, and health that create inequitable environments nationwide.
Last fall, NAREB launched a Building Black Wealth Tour that has hosted events in more than 100 cities around the country, where NAREB and its partners host classes, workshops, and one-on-one counseling on homebuying, investing, credit, and careers in real estate. There are two million African Americans who are mortgage-ready but are not homeowners.
“Our convention arms our Realtists with the knowledge and tools they need to work with Black consumers to increase Black homeownership,” said Dr. Rose. “Increasing homeownership and closing the racial wealth gap is essential for achieving true racial equality in America.”
NAREB was formed in 1947 to secure equal housing opportunities regardless of race, creed, or color. NAREB has advocated for legislation and supported or instigated legal challenges that ensure fair housing, sustainable homeownership, and access to credit for Black Americans. Simultaneously, NAREB advocates for and promotes access to business opportunities for Black real estate professionals in each real estate discipline. From the past to the present, NAREB remains an association that is proud of its history, dedicated to its chosen struggle, and unrelenting in its pursuit of the REALTIST®’s mission/vision embedded goal, “Democracy in Housing.”

Safe Sharps Disposal: Keeping Students Healthy at School
(StatePoint) Back to school can be overwhelming for students and families. With new classes, new friends and sometimes new schools, students have a lot to balance. Additionally, changing routine can be challenging for students managing health conditions, including allergies, diabetes and others that require using and safely disposing of needles, syringes, or epinephrine autoinjectors at school. Parents and school faculty can help promote safe sharps disposal so students and staff can better focus on a happy and healthy year using the following tips and resources from SafetyIsThePoint.org.
Safe Sharps at School and at Home For many, learning about safe medical sharps disposal starts at home. Free, educational resources help answer questions like “How do I safely dispose of medical sharps?” and “What are the disposal rules in my area?” The SafetyIsThePoint.org website features a clickable map and ZIP code finder to check local disposal regulations and find nearby disposal sites. Resources can be used by school nurses and other staff, who can share safe sharps disposal information and show students and families how to properly dispose of used medical sharps.
Teachers and other faculty play an important role in educating about safe sharps disposal. Posters and fact sheets can be downloaded and printed for easy integration into lesson plans or displayed in classrooms and offices.
Safe Sharps at School Teachers and other faculty play an important role in educating about safe sharps disposal. Posters and fact sheets can be downloaded and printed for easy integration into lesson plans or displayed in classrooms and offices. materials both educate about proper medical sharps disposal and raise awareness of health conditions that require the use of sharps. For schools and districts that use social media, sample posts can be downloaded and shared online to reach students and their families. Schools can incorporate the messages and materials into newsletters.
Ensuring a Safe and Healthy School Year Parents, teachers and other school staff play a crucial role in ensuring students arprotecting and preventing themselves and others from getting hurt. Household sharps disposal rules vary by state, so it’s important to check local requirements as some prohibit disposing of sharps in household trash or recycling. Some states require sharps to be dropped off at a collection center in an approved container.
The basics about sharp disposal are as easy as knowing these three steps:
1. Place used sharps in a strong, plastic container like an empty laundry detergent or bleach bottle.
2. When the container is 75% full, seal it tightly with duct tape and label it clearly with “Do Not Recycle.”
3. Place the sealed container in regular household trash, if permitted in your area.
You can learn more about safe sharps disposal this back-to-school season and beyond at SafetyIsThePoint.org.
By arming your children, their teachers and yourself with the latest safety information, you can help make the school year a safer experience for everyone.
