GIANNOULIAS ANNOUNCES DIGITAL WALLET PAYMENTS AT DMVS
Illinois customers now have convenient, secure Tap to Pay option
DMVs throughout Illinois are now accepting contactless payments as part of the Secretary of State’s push to modernize technology and offer more convenient service for customers, Secretary Alexi Giannoulias announced.
“Allowing for digital wallet payments like Apple, Google and Samsung Pay reinforces our steadfast commitment to improving the customer experience at the DMV by leveraging new technology,” Giannoulias said. “Adopting digital wallets increases the accessibility and ease of purchase customers already enjoy at stores and restaurants they visit.”
Reports show that more than half of all Americans use contactless payment for everyday purchases from groceries to gas. The widespread adoption is attributed to people wanting a contactless payment method during the pandemic and the increased security offered by the technology.
Near-field communication (NFC) is safer than using a traditional credit card with a magnetic strip or chip due to the use of endto-end encryption to ensure maximum fraud protection.
“Illinois residents can rest assured that their payment and personal information is safe when they visit the DMV,” Giannoulias said. “The security surrounding the payment and the speed at which it is processed leaves no room for fraudsters to steal information.”
Customers may now use their digital wallets to pay at all 150 Illinois DMV locations across Illinois as well as the Secretary of State’s Business Services and Index departments.
SOUTH SUBURBAN COLLEGE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROGRAM HOSTS 2ND ANNUAL CAR SHOW
South Holland, Ill. – South Suburban College’s (SSC) Criminal Justice Program invites car enthusiasts, students, and community members to experience the 2nd Annual Criminal Justice Car Show on Tuesday, October 1, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM in the western portion of the staff parking lot.
The car show, hosted by SSC’s Criminal Justice Program, offers a unique look at the vehicles and technology used in law enforcement today. The event is designed to engage SSC students from all disciplines and the surrounding community with an interactive “touch-a-truck” experience, where attendees can explore the latest law enforcement vehicles up close.
“This event showcases the intersection of our Criminal Justice Program’s academic rigor and hands-on learning experiences,” said Prof. Becky Walters, J.D., SSC’s Criminal Justice Program Coordinator. “It’s a great opportunity for current and prospective students to see the practical applications of a career in criminal justice while enjoying an exciting, communityfocused event.”
SSC’s Criminal Justice Program offers comprehensive coursework for students pursuing careers in law enforcement, corrections, within the courts system, victim advocacy, and criminal justice administration. The program emphasizes real-world training and critical thinking to prepare graduates for a successful career.

Bank of America Engages Park Forest Community With Mobile Financial Services

The goal of the event was to provide convenient access to the banking services to the community. Associates and specialists were on site, from small business to home loans, as well as bankers and Operation Hope counselors, to bring a full suite of specialists’ resources to support the market.
As the Community Banking Executive for Bank of America, Shannah Stephens does programs that bring financial health resources into the communities that the financial institution serves across the country. Stephens said that the mobile financial center is being placed in communities where there is a brick-and-mortar financial center. That way, people in the community can take advantage of all of the resources and tools that were on hand while the mobile financial center was in the community.
The site where the Bank of America mobile financial center was located in Park Forest during the three-day event was adjacent to the OAI, Inc., office at 208 Forest Blvd. Stephens said that Bank of America wanted to partner with an organization in the Chicago market where participants could benefit from financial health resources.
Bank of America is a funding partner of OAI. The focus of the organization is to provide job skills training for people who are unemployed, underemployed, with low to no income. OAI’s mission is to provide them with the kind of job training that can help them get a decent wage job. The training people receive at OAI gets them into careers in healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, logistics and distribution.
Taunya Kennedy, Program Manager at OAI, said as part of OAI’s wraparound services, participants receive financial literacy education, as well an income support program.
“It just made for a great partnership with Bank of America because they have their Better Money Habits tool that
you can go online to use. We use it as part of our training for financial literacy to teach people about banking, and how to build credit and how to get ready to purchase a home,” she said.
Kennedy said when OAI found out that Bank of America had the mobile finance center, they wanted them to come to Park Forest to work with OAI so people in the community could learn more about the services Bank of America offers.
Stephens said the hope is that by being engaged in the community, Bank of America is bringing awareness about the financial institution and how it is available to aid in their financial health. Bank of America wants to showcase the tools and resources and let people know that inside many of their centers, Operation Hope and other resources are available for them to receive free one-on-one coaching to help people reach their financial goals.
“When you need that extra help and that extra one-onone guidance and those personalized plans, you don’t often think about the bank as the place to go and often, people don’t know where to go at all, so we want to make sure they are aware that Bank of America is that resource for them,” Stephens said.
All of the classes, which took place every hour, were strongly attended. Also, being located in a residential area provided the opportunity for people in the community to come and take part in the event. The most popular classes were the credit and money management and homeownership. Stephens said that people like to understand what they have to do to get into a home, as well as the grants and closing cost assistance that are available.
“We’re bringing financial resources to help boost the financial health of people in the communities that we serve,” Stephens said. She added that Bank of America is ensuring that it is pouring resources into the lower and moderate-income communities.

Giannoulias Warns Illinoisans of High-Tech Financial Scams
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is issuing a warning to Illinois residents that scammers are leveraging new sophisticated technology to gain access to personal information and financial accounts.
“Artificial intelligence (AI) has made it more difficult for people to determine if requests coming from an email, text, phone call or even a video message are legitimate,” Giannoulias said. “Voice cloning and deepfake videos, used to fraudulently gain access and trust, are becoming more prevalent. Our Securities Department has been tasked with educating and protecting investors against these advanced scam attempts.”
The Illinois Secretary of State regulates the securities and investment advisory industries in Illinois and pursues an enforcement program designed to pro-
tect Illinois investors from those engaged in unlawful investment-related activities. The office is planning to conduct a series of public meetings later this fall to provide more details on how to detect deceptive scams and how to avoid them.

Keeping People with Dementia Safe During Natural Disasters
Early fall is peak time for natural disasters, such as Tornadoes in Illinois. Having a disaster plan in place is particularly crucial to helping those living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Changes in routine, traveling and relocations necessitated by an emergency evacuation may increase the risk of dementia-related behaviors that can cause additional challenges during an emergency.
“Financial scams can be as damaging emotionally as they are economically because of the betrayal of trust and feelings of embarrassment,” said Securities Department Director Chet Taylor. “Not only have I witnessed people falling victim to these types of scams, but I hear stories everyday of people who have had their lives completely altered because they trusted the wrong person.”
Giannoulias is raising awareness about these scams and encouraging the public to approach these requests with a healthy amount of skepticism so they can avoid giving out their personal identifiable information (PII), losing money or inadvertently squandering their life savings. The most prolific scams include:
Deepfakes. Criminals have used AI to send dupe emails for several years, but recently have begun creating audio and video messages that impersonate real people to commit fraud. The visual and/or auditory likeness of senior bank officials, investment firm employees, government officials and even family members have been generated to deceive people into sending money to fraudulent accounts.
Validate Identities. E-mails, texts, phone calls and video messages can be used to manufacture identities to more easily gain access to personal or financial information. Prospective investors should always validate the sender’s identity and their claims of representing an organization or company. They should also ask questions that have answers that are not publicly available.
Check their Record. Prospective investors can make sure the person offering an investment opportunity is licensed by visiting BrokerCheck or Investment Adviser Public Disclosure to check their license status and disciplinary record.
Avoid Untrusted Sources. Clicking on links or opening attachments from suspicious or untrusted sources should always be avoided. Before clicking on a link, it is recommended that the user hovers over the URL or website address to determine if it is a legitimate link. If a person receives a call requesting money or personal information, they should ask to call back and take time to confirm the caller’s legitimacy. It is recommended that individuals call the claimed source’s trusted number, especially if it differs from the number that called them to request information.
“Living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias can make it hard to cope with disasters, particularly if an evacuation is necessary,” said Delia Jervier, Executive Director Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter. “People living with dementia may not understand what is happening or why an evacuation may be needed. They may not want to leave their current surroundings. Upsetting the person’s routine can make dementia-related behaviors worse – leaving the person feeling confused, agitated or withdrawn.”
During National Preparedness Month this September, the Alzheimer’s Association is offering these important tips for families facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias to prepare for natural disasters that may lie ahead: Be Prepared
w Check weather conditions regularly before leaving the house and adjust plans as needed.
w If the person with dementia lives in a residential building or attends an adult day center, learn about its disaster and evacuation plans.
wBe sure the evacuation plan takes special needs into consideration. For example, if oxygen is used, be sure there is access to portable tanks.
w Provide copies of the person’s medical history, a list of medications, physician information and family contacts to people other than the primary caregiver.

to Marginalized Culinary Businesses through Restaurant Business Development Grant Program
HOUSTON, Texas, PRNewswire -- According to the National Restaurant Association’s 2024 State of the Industry report, 98 percent of culinary business owners say higher labor and operations costs are an issue for their restaurant, 97 percent cite food inflation as a challenge, and 38 percent expressed their restaurants were not profitable in 2023.
Additionally, the report states competition is strong with 45 percent of operators expecting competition to be more intense than last year.
Since 2021, Feed the Soul Foundation has supported 100 marginalized culinary businesses nationwide.
Nearly half of consumers are increasingly cautious with their spending habits. This trend is particularly evident in the restaurant industry, where patrons are less likely to spend money unless they are enticed by compelling promotions or valuable dining experiences.
In its fourth year of service, Feed the Soul Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Black Restaurant Week and Latin Restaurant Weeks, continues to address these challenges and reintroduces their cohort program to support marginalized restaurant entrepreneurs financially and professionally through the Restaurant Business Development Grant Program – awarding more than $850,000 in 2024 with additional contributions from Stella Artois.

RON BASS UNVEILS NEW ART EXHIBIT AT JOHN F. KENNEDY INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT’S
JAMAICA, N.Y., PRNewswire -- The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and JFK Millennium Partners (JMP), the company that manages John F. Kennedy International Airport’s Terminal 7 and is currently building the airport’s new state-of-the art $4.2 billion Terminal 6, announced today the installation of a new public artwork exhibit by renowned Brooklyn artist Ron Bass in Terminal 7 that will elevate the travel experience for passengers by contributing to a uniquely New York sense of place.
The four wall murals in the departures and arrivals areas represent the first major art exhibition at the terminal, which is home to 13 domestic and international airlines serving some 2,000 passengers per day. Bass’ art exhibit at Terminal 7, selected by JMP, will be on view for a limited period until 2026, when the 54-year-old terminal is expected to be decommissioned to make space for the second construction phase of Terminal 6. The new Terminal 6 is a key component of the Port Authority’s $19 billion transformation of JFK airport into a world-class gateway. The historic project includes two new terminals, the modernization and expansion of two existing terminals, a new ground transportation center, and a new, simplified roadway network.
Ron Bass is celebrated for his eclectic and dynamic style that seamlessly blends elements of pop culture, street art and fashion. A native New Yorker, Bass is deeply influenced by the city’s rich artistic heritage and diverse cultural landscape. Over the years, Bass has made significant contributions to the art scene in New York City though the exhibit at Terminal 7 is his first in an airport setting. September 30 — Battleground States. We often hear that elections will be decided by the battleground states, often 4 to 5 states. We are going to those battleground states to hear from our community about how we mobilize to protect the rights of marginalized people.
October 7 — The Group Chat. Registering to vote is obviously important, but what if you also pledged to convince at least 5 people you know to also do the same? Now that is extending our community to seize back our power. Join us in a campaign to encourage every person you know to register to vote. And for the kicker, there may be a surprise gift in it for you.
October 14 — Early Voting. Forty-seven states and the District of Colum-
November 4—Get Out the Vote. On the eve of Election Day, we will host multiple virtual events to provide information and resources to voters and hear from them about their plans to vote. This robust schedule builds on the inaugural Paint the Polls virtual event that attracted more than 200,000 people and provided information, addressed misinformation and informed the public about registering for one of the most consequential elections in our lifetimes. Participants included world-renowned DJ D-Nice who started the event with a special pre-show DJ set; award-winning White House Correspondent and event co-moderator Ebony McMorris who spoke to the importance of access to affordable healthcare for Black women and families; Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett and Congresswoman Shontel Brown who paid tribute to the legacy of the U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee and addressed the political attacks on Black women in the media and the issues that will be on the ballot for Black women in the upcoming election, including the anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) movement and reproductive justice ; Author and Political Commentator Bakari Sellers who emphasized why Black men should reach out to other Black men across their network to ensure they’re engaged in the upcoming election; Award-winning media Personality Van Lathan who provided background information on voter turnout in his hometown, Baton Rouge, and how leaders in the area can engage the community to increase civic engagement on a local, regional, and national level; and NAACPAward Nominated Content Creator Lynae Vanee shared tools for Black voters who are interested in mobilizing other voters online and offline, including community volunteer opportunities, to protect the voting process.

The Reunion Project and National Working Positive Coalition Present: “Long-Term Survivors: Sharing Wisdom & Shaping Legacies”
CHICAGO, PRNewswire -- The Reunion Project, in collaboration with the National Working Positive Coalition (NWPC), the Chicago Department of Public Health, Loyola University Chicago, and the Third Coast CFAR, is pleased to announce the release of its comprehensive report on the recent town hall forum, “Long-Term Survivors: Sharing Wisdom & Shaping Legacies,” held on May 17-18 in Chicago.
The forum marked a significant homecoming for The Reunion Project, returning to its roots in Chicago, where the initiative first launched in 2015. This pivotal event brought together HIV long-term survivors (LTS), older adults living with HIV, and key stakeholders from across the region to share insights, network, and collaborate on improving the quality of life for this resilient community.
Highlights from the Report:
Health Equity as a Foundation: The forum underscored the critical need for health equity, defined as the attainment of the highest levels of health for everyone. Discussions revealed that systems and services must address disparities in access and outcomes, combat stigma, and be grounded in intersectionality.
Core Values Identified: The forum emphasized three essential characteristics for effective support systems:
Wellness: A comprehensive approach to well-being that encompasses physical, mental, and emotional health.
Wholeness: An integrated approach to care that addresses the entirety of an individual’s needs, promoting holistic support.
Personalization: Tailoring services to meet each individual’s unique needs and experiences, avoiding a one-size-fits-all model.
Findings and Recommendations: The forum highlighted the necessity of trauma-informed care and the importance of creating supportive environments where individuals feel valued and heard. The discussions also called for removing barriers to access and ensuring services are as accessible and comprehensive as possible.
