CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND LEAP INNOVATIONS RECEIVE $14 MILLION IN GRANTS Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and LEAP Innovations, a nonprofit organization that works with schools and educators to implement personalized learning, announced recently that they received grants totaling $14 million from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) to meet the growing demand from schools looking to introduce or expand personalized learning instructional models. “Successful personalized learning starts with engaged and passionate teachers looking to support each student with an individualized path that helps them reach their goals,” said CPS CEO Dr. Janice K. Jackson. “This grant will allow more dedicated educators and administrators to receive training and resources to implement personalized learning and best meet the unique needs of their students.”

EXPANDING THE WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY FOR STROKE PATIENTS WITH IRAPID People who have suffered a stroke will benefit from new diagnostic software now being offered at OSF HealthCare hospitals in Bloomington, Peoria, and Rockford, Illinois. The iRapid software uses noninvasive CT imaging of the head that takes less than a minute to complete. “iRapid helps us determine who is going to benefit best,” said Ajeet Gordhan, MD, Interventional Radiologist with OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington. “The idea behind this is to give them a functional outcome and that’s the key. We are trying to rescue salvageable brain in patients who, in the past, may not have had that opportunity and although they might still have a deficit, the deficit may be not as profound and they may be able to attain some level of functional capability.”

CUNNINGHAM AND HURLEY MOVE TO STREAMLINE TAX DOLLARS TO CHICAGO FIRE DEPARTMENT SPRINGFIELD, IL – Rank-and-file Chicago firefighters
would have greater oversight and control of funding intended for their department under legislation passed by the Illinois Senate today. Sponsored by State Senator Bill Cunningham and State Representative Fran Hurley, House Bill 5197 would establish a Foreign Fire Insurance Board, an entity that will be entrusted with the expenditure of fire insurance fees collected exclusively from insurance companies whose corporate headquarters are located outside of Illinois. Currently, the City of Chicago receives about $5 million in fire insurance fees, which are directly deposited into the city’s general fund. HB 5197 would transfer control of those funds to a newly-established Foreign Fire Insurance Board and require the City of Chicago to turn over fire insurance revenue to the board. “The legislation streamlines the flow of tax dollars and allows the Chicago fire fighters to determine how revenue intended for their own department is used,” said Cunningham, a Democrat representing parts of Chicago and the Southwest Suburbs. “The funding will now go directly to fire suppression instead of being spread throughout the city budget.” Advocates of the legislation say it will improve Chicago Firefighter’s safety and effectiveness through enhancements in their equipment and training. Under current law, the Chicago Fire Department is the only fire department in the state that does not have a fire insurance board. HB 5197 now heads to the House for approval.
Renowned Humanitarian Will Serve a Three-Year Term with the Nonprofit LITTLE ROCK, AR – Heifer
International’s Board of Directors has announced the election of Ambassador Ertharin Cousin to its membership. As an at-large delegate, Cousin will serve a minimum three-year term for the nonprofit whose mission is to end hunger and poverty around the world while caring for the Earth. With more than 30 years of national and international nonprofit, government and corporate leadership experience, Cousin is globally renowned for her humanitarian work. “I have long respected Heifer’s commitment to fighting global hunger and am honored to join the Board,” Cousin said. “I am excited to lend my expertise to further maximize their new and innovative initiatives to help farmers feed their children, while securing their livelihoods and the caring for the planet.” From 2009 to 2017, Cousin served as executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme. As leader of the world’s largest humanitarian organization, she guided 14,000 employees serving 80 million beneficiaries in 75 countries meeting urgent food needs. An advocate for long-term solutions to food insecurity and hunger, Cousin increased funding for the Programme by more than $2 million in her passionate pursuit for a Zero Hunger World. In 2009, Cousin was nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate as the U.S. Ambassador to the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture in Rome. In her role, she represented the U.S. in discussions with global leaders around humanitarian and development activities. Cousin helped identify and catalyze the U.S. government’s investment in food security and nutrition activities supported by the USAID Feed the Future Program. Cousin currently serves as the Frank E. and Arthur W. Payne Distinguished Lecturer at Stanford University’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. New Book Discusses Policing, Prison, and Punishment in Chicago Continued from page 1 BY KATHERINE NEWMAN
A
recent panel discussion held at Adler University brought together three community activists to discuss War on Neighborhoods, a book that was released in April and explores policing, prison, and punishment in Chicago. The panel was led by Daniel Cooper, coauthor of War on Neighborhoods, and featured insight from three panelists who are currently working in their communities to create a better quality of life for residents. “I have read most of the book and it’s a great read. It really does highlight a lot of the issues that we are facing in Austin and on the West side altogether,” said Darnell Shields, executive director of Austin Coming Together (ACT) and
War on Neighborhoods panelist. ACT was created in 2010 and it is a group of community organizations who all work together and share a mission of creating a thriving Austin community. “Right now, we act as a backbone agency for a network of organizations that are committed to improving the quality of life in Austin. Together, we have formed four impact goals that we are really focused on achieving,” said Shields. The four goals that ACT has set are to improve the quality of early learning in the community, focus on living wage careers, improving neighborhood safety, and stabilizing the housing market. The book, War on Neighborhoods, argues that when the main investment in a community is policing and incarceration, instead of strengthening resources, that amounts to a
Van Pelt Advances Measure Prioritizing Funding for Communities with High Rates of Crime and Violence SPRINGFIELD, IL – A measure from Senator Patricia Van Pelt (D-Chicago) that
would require state agencies to prioritize funding for communities that have high levels of crime, incarceration and community violence advanced out of the Senate recently with strong bipartisan support. “It’s clear that business as usual isn’t enough to prevent crime and keep our neighborhoods safe,” Van Pelt said. “Neighborhoods hit hardest by crime and violence need special attention in order to address the root cause of violence. Prioritizing funding for areas with high levels of violence and crime is the best way to help struggling communities rebuild.” The Safe and Full Employment (SAFE) Zone Act creates a process to identify high-violence communities and prioritize state dollars to go to those communities to fund investment to address the underlying causes of crime and violence. “Violence is a public health crisis,” Van Pelt said. “In order to address this crisis, we need to make sure we’re strategically directing funds to communities that are hardest hit by violence. The SAFE Zone Act addresses the inequity in the distribution of funds and uses data to determine which neighborhoods are most in need of priority funding.” HB 5308 creates a board of state and local officials and agencies to coordinate and maximize existing state programs to implement the SAFE Zone Act. The measure calls for the development of an evidence-based, community-designed investment plan through local economic growth councils.

The authors have suggested that high crime in Chicago is the consequence of a broken public safety system and that city leaders have been attempting to create peace through punishment for decades and all it has done is cause disinvestment in neighborhoods. “We are investing lots of money in systems that actually can degrade human potential and communities. We have invested so much in these systems that we don’t have other viable systems in place when people need real intervention in their lives. We have degraded our school resources, our mental health resources, and our hospital and healthcare resources for many people. The only democratically, all-encompassing intervention that is available for everyone is a criminal justice intervention,” said Elena Quintana,
executive director of the Institute on Public Safety and Social Justice at Adler University and War on Neighborhoods panelist. The book tells the story of a Westside neighborhood that demonstrates the issues that many majority-black neighborhoods face across the country. Through diligent research and powerful stories, the book attempts to show that punishment will never create peace in neighborhoods and calls for a change in the way that public dollars are invested to create safe neighborhoods. “It is an ambitious attempt to transform our criminal justice system into something completely different than what we see now and that is not easy. The verdict is still out as to whether or not we are going to accomplish it,” said Clifford Nellis, executive director of the Lawndale Christian Legal Center and War on Neighborhoods panelist.
Three-Year Workforce Training Program Offers Real-World STEM Education Opportunities for CPS High School Students

n 2015 F.H. Paschen partnered with George Westinghouse College Prep (GWCP), a CPS selective enrollment high school in East Garfield Park, to support the school in developing a new engineering academy to improve students’ knowledge of and access to career opportunities in fields such as engineering and construction. The partnership resulted in the Paschen Engineering Scholars Program, which goes way beyond an average internship. Three years of STEM curriculum, summer internships, exposure to college engineering programs, construction site visits, classroom-to-site applications, and one-onone support ensure students have the opportunity to seek the STEM career of his or her dreams with confidence. On Thursday, May 31, F.H. Paschen held its annual “Hard Hat Ceremony” to induct new scholars into the three-year Paschen Engineering Scholars Program. Past scholars have worked on Chicago infrastructure projects such as the CTA’s 95th Street Redline Terminal Improvement Project and the new 41st Street Pedestrian Bridge over Lake Shore Drive. “At Paschen a key core value is for us to seek and provide opportunities for all. ERIS Brewery & Cider House Turns to ELAN of Nortek Security & Control LLC for Total Control of its Cavernous 14,000 Square Foot Venue
W
hen two Chicago-based women purchased a massive former temple built in 1910 with the goal of turning it into Chicago’s first brewery and ciderhouse, they turned to local integration firm, Buchan Consulting, to design and install a control and automation system to manage the technology in the cavernous space. The ELAN® Entertainment and Control system Buchan recommended and installed is now providing seamless control over the climate, audio, video, lighting and security in the ERIS Brewery & Cider House. “With a venue this large, we had a lot of specific needs and requests that we had to address,” said Doug Buchan, Owner of Buchan Consulting. “The brewery and ciderhouse founders asked us to recommend a robust and easy-to-use automation system that would give them to access all of the building’s technology through a single interface. Without hesitation, we suggested that the brewery rely on ELAN to control the multi-room AV system, surveillance, lighting and HVAC.” The two-phase project recently completed its first phase, which consisted of a gut renovation of the basement and first floor of the brewery and restaurant. During phase one, Buchan’s team started with an ELAN gSC2 Controller, accessible through the ELAN app installed on dedicated Apple iPads, to control and automate the venue’s lighting, security, audio, video and HVAC. An ELAN 6x6 HDBaseT AV Matrix was also installed, to distribute audio and video throughout the main restaurant and bar floor. For power distribution, Buchan and his team added a Panamax® D10-PFP power strip to the equipment rack, for a convenient way to power a rack full of equipment. office is now easy to manage for the owners and staff. Through the system, they’re now able to customize the climate, including both thermostats and ceiling fans, and adjust the audio and video needs of the separate areas, all with the swipe of a finger. The brewery’s owners sought to embrace
the industrial charm of the original building. To do this, they kept the original chandeliers, incorporating booths and tables made with reclaimed wood, and using repurposed radiators as railings for the new space. They were successfully able to transform the space so that the technology in no way takes away from the overall design, but helps to enhance it. “Through the ELAN system, we’re able to control and automate a unique and inviting environment that helps to fulfill our goal of making the ERIS Brewery & Cider House a gathering spot for the community. This system allows our staff to easily manipulate the everyday details of the space, all at the touch of a button,” said Michelle Foik, Owner
& Managing Partner of ERIS Brewery & Cider House. Another unique design element is the impressive Haiku fans, which were installed in the main dining space. The smart, WiFi connected fans, are controlled from the ELAN system, as are the Aprilaire® thermostats that run the building’s geothermal heating and cooling systems. Given the size of the space, security was another priority for the owners. To accommodate these needs, Buchan and his team installed five exterior cameras at the secondary entrances and two interior cameras at the main entrance, all of which are accessed and controlled through the ELAN system for easy triggering of building lights and push notifications when a security alarm is set off. “The security system that Buchan and his team installed is extremely comprehensive and instantly available to us through the ELAN app,” said Foik. “Having an extensive system gives me peace-of-mind when the brewery is shut down and closed at the end of each day.” According to Foik, “this system has been so easy to use. Our bartenders and managers can easily change the temperature, the channel on the TV, or crank up the volume at the bar, all through the ELAN app installed on the iPads we have throughout the space. Through this, owners can also remotely access the cameras and be notified of all happenings within the system, thanks to ELAN.” Phase two of the project will likely start in the summer of 2018 and will include the remodeling of the outdoor dining area, third floor event space and eventually rooftop dining. With the help of Buchan and their team of certified ELAN integrators, the technology involved in the expansion should be easy to deploy and even easier for the staff to use.

Cottage. Satellite events will be held at Trinity United Church of Christ in Gary, Indiana. A Real Men Cook gala will also be held in the South Suburbs, hosted by Fathers and Blessings. In making the announcement, Ayinde Cartman, executive director of Real Men Charities said this year’s celebration will mark the 29th anniversary of this iconic Father’s Day Celebration. Black Public Media Gets $40,000 NEA Grant NEW YORK – The Harlem-based
media arts organization Black Public Media (BPM) has been awarded an Art Works grant of $40,000 by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). The allocation, one of more than $80 million in approved grants by National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu as part of the NEA’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2018, will help fund BPM’s signature public television series, AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange. “NEA’s support for the AfroPoP series reinforces our belief that authentic stories about the African Diaspora are important to keeping the American public informed
and engaged about diversity of the AfricanAmerican and global African experience,” said BPM Executive Director Leslie FieldsCruz. For 10 years AfroPoP: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange has been bringing stories about people of African descent
around the world to television. Mubadala-led Investor Group and Sony Reach Agreement for Sony to Acquire All of Mubadala’s Interest in EMI Music Publishing
M
ubadala Investment Company (“Mubadala”) and Sony Corporation (“Sony”) recently announced that they have signed a legally binding memorandum of understanding (“MOU”) for the sale of the Mubadala consortium’s approximately 60% equity interest in EMI Music Publishing to Sony Corporation of America, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony, based on an enterprise value of $4.75 billion. As a result of the transaction, Sony will indirectly own approximately 90% of the equity interest in EMI Music Publishing and it will become a consolidated subsidiary of Sony. The closing of the transaction is subject to certain closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Kenichiro Yoshida, President and CEO, Sony Corporation said: “We are thrilled to bring EMI Music Publishing into the Sony family and maintain our number one position in the music publishing industry. I would also like to convey my gratitude to Mubadala, our equity partner in EMI Music Publishing, for sharing our longterm perspective on the potential success of music publishing and their support as we grew the business. The music business has enjoyed a resurgence over the past couple of years, driven largely by the rise of paid subscription-based streaming services. In the entertainment space, we are focusing on building a strong IP portfolio, and I believe this acquisition will be a particularly significant milestone for our long-term growth.” The original transaction and the investor consortium that partnered with Sony and the Michael Jackson Estate to acquire EMI Music Publishing from a whollyowned subsidiary of Citigroup Inc. were sourced and assembled by Mubadala Capital’s private equity business, which has controlled and managed EMI Music
Publishing on behalf of Mubadala and other third-party investors since 2012. Hani Barhoush, Head of Mubadala Capital, said: “EMI has been a successful investment for Mubadala and I would like to personally extend my appreciation to the leadership at Sony and Sony/ATV, who have been instrumental in administering the EMI catalog as well as shaping the music landscape on a global basis. They have been tremendous partners to us.” Adib Mattar, Head of Private Equity for Mubadala Capital and Chairman of EMI Music Publishing, said: “EMI Music Publishing represents one of the world’s largest and most diverse catalog of copyrights with iconic songs that span every decade over the last one hundred years. Writers and artists only stand to benefit under consolidated ownership and should feel proud to be part of the Sony family. The sale of our consortium’s interest in EMI Music Publishing represents a milestone for Mubadala and our private equity business.” While the final purchase price to be paid by Sony for all of Mubadala’s equity interest in EMI Music Publishing is subject to customary closing adjustments, the total cash consideration Sony expects to pay to consolidate EMI Music Publishing is approximately $2.3 billion. Sony will assume EMI Music Publishing’s existing gross indebtedness, which was approximately $1.359 billion as of March 31, 2018. Upon closing of the transaction, Sony expects to record in operating income a non-cash step-up gain of approximately 100 billion yen for the equity interest in EMI Music Publishing it currently owns. The step-up gain and the consolidation of EMI Music Publishing has not been included in Sony’s forecast of consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019, and Sony is currently assessing the impact of

age, the overall appearance of the average worker is changing. Their faces will look younger each year, but their desire to prove themselves and do excellent work will be ever-present. Professional standards do need to be held, but what consists of a professional standard is changing with the generations. In a way, it is a bit of give and take between the older and newer generations. Brandon Frere, a successful entrepreneur and CEO of several companies, advises keeping in mind that as the times change it is important to judge an employee by performance and not appearance. Now, maintaining a dress code can help employees be in the right mindset to perform their best at work. But other appearance-based characteristics such as unnaturally dyed hair, piercings, and tattoos do not necessarily impede an employee’s ability to do work. Keeping in mind, though, how a consumer might perceive such appearances is still important. It’s a balancing act. “What is appropriate for one business may not be the same as another. A dealership will have different standards from, say, a typical office setting. It’s important to keep in mind what is best for your business, but that doesn’t also alienate current or potential employees,” says Frere. Different tactics can be used to maintain the balance of professionalism and an individual’s right to bodily autonomy. Allowing tattoos that can be covered when needed can be an easy halfway point. Piercings can be kept to only being gold or silver colored. There are many ways to accommodate a top-rated employee that has more than just academic decoration. Because in

London-Based Wires Glasses Lands Investor LONDON – Eyewear startup Wires
Glasses recently announced its seed investment from True Ventures along with the launch of its new collection of modular eyewear. The company was established in 2017 by Londonbased designer Yair Neuman and under the creative direction of Lily Cole. Each pair of glasses from Wires’ 2018 collection are crafted with a foundational wire frame that pairs with seven different designs of lens rims in various shapes and colors. The lens rims are interchangeable and can be switched out easily so the wearer can change the look of their eyewear without having to buy a whole new pair. Alongside its modular innovation, the 2018 Wires collection features a frame with a first-of-itskind invisible hinge mechanism, enabling the frame to fold as a result of geometry, not screws. Conscious of the environmental impact of the traditional eyewear
industry, Wires’ co-founders, among them the model, actor and activist Lily Cole and socially conscious entrepreneur Kwame Ferreira, are committed to sustainable design and production. By 3D printing the lens rims and using extruded metal wires, the company reduces the amount of waste that is usually created during eyewear production where rims and frames are cut from larger sheets of material. CALENDAR Chicago Summer Theatre Festival
T
he Chicago Park District recently announced the schedule for the 66th season of Theater on the Lake: The Chicago Summer Theater Festival. In keeping with Theater on the Lake’s tradition of producing plays lakeside, the Summer Festival will return to Theater on the Lake’s Fullerton Street building, located at 2401 N. Lake Shore Drive, for the first time since 2013. This summer, two neighborhood parks will also host the off-the Loop theater festival: South Shore Cultural Center and Hamlin Park. The season will run June 19 through August 31.Performances will be held Tuesdaythrough Friday at 7 p.m.and Thursdays at 2 p.m. “With support from the Mayor, the Chicago Park District is pleased to launch the 66th run of Theater on the Lake and to feature an incredible breadth of work as part of the first summer back to the lakeside venue,” said General Superintendent and CEO Michael P. Kelly. “Theater on the Lake’s upcoming season will showcase Chicago’s outstanding theater companies and offer audiences a one-of- a-kind cultural experience along the lakefront.” Playwright Isaac Gomez is also returning as this season’s artistic curator. After a successful 2017 Theater on the Lake run, the Chicago-based dramatist originally from El Paso, Texas/Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, will once again contribute his theatrical insights to make this inaugural year memorable for theatergoers. “In this one year, art was front and center in Chicago’s beloved storefront theater community,” said Artistic Curator Isaac Gomez. “It is somewhere amidst reflection of our past to gain a better understanding of where we are now and, perhaps more importantly, where we can go, that the inaugural season of Theater on the Lake in its return to the Lakefront lives.” Each year, the artistic curator has the opportunity to select productions they feel exemplify the best and most relevant of Chicago’s rich theater community. Curators present these works to the Theater on the Lake audience with the intention engaging an active discussion around their choices. This year, in addition to curating Theater on the Lake’s season, Gomez‘s prolific contributions to the theater community are currently spread across the city. His play, Ofrenda, written in collaboration with Chicago Park District company
in Residence, The Albany Park Theater Project, is currently running at Eugene Field Park. In addition, the public can look forward to the world premiere of his play La Ruta at Steppenwolf Theater Company this fall. This year will also feature the first-ever play commissioned by the Chicago Park District in collaboration with the Chicago Dramatists organization Felons and Familias. Sandra Delgado, the actress and playwright, will return to her childhood park to present her workshop production at Hamlin Park. “I look forward to sharing this story of a Chicago family with Theater on the Lake audiences,” said playwright Sandra Delgado. “Every day, I am getting more excited for the workshop production of Felons and Familias and seeing my vision come to life with actors and designers is always an overwhelmingly joyful experience.” In 2017, Theater on the Lake launched its New Play Commission titled Theater on the Lake: In the Works. The initiative was devised to support the development of a new theatrical work by a Chicago playwright. Actress and playwright Sandra Delgado was chosen to develop Felons and Familias, a new work in conjunction with resources from the Chicago Park District and with the support of Chicago Dramatists.
