REAL MEN CHARITIES USHERS IN A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERSHIP WITH NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND EXPANDED BOARD OF DIRECTORS
A
s part of an overarching mission to build on its legacy for decades to come, Real Men Charities, Inc.’s co-founders, Kofi and Yvette Moyo, have appointed 27-year-old Ayinde Cartman as Executive Director. An organizer and artist with extensive experience in revitalizing communities and schools, Cartman succeeds Ms. Moyo, who will remain as Associate Director. To illustrate its forward vision, the Charities’ board added a carefully-selected group of new trustees. These leaders, like Cartman, are inspired by the Founders’ commitment to Real Men Cook’s goals and its evolving service dynamic. At the same time, they bring their own vision of growth that will enable Real Men Cook to thrive well into posterity. Under the Moyos’ leadership, Real Men Charities has gained notoriety as one of the nation’s most successful organizations focused on building healthy families and communities. As executive director, Cartman is charged with building on the Moyos’ mission while expanding its youth reach, increasing its mentoring activities, and taking an even more active and consistent role in the community. Cartman, a graduate of Morehouse College, brings an impressive and diverse record of activism to his new role. He has almost a decade of experience organizing, mentoring youth and adults for a multitude of organizations and perfecting his talent as a performance artist. After graduation, Cartman held poetry and theater sessions through After School Matters, and continues to uphold the importance of the arts with his teaching position with Alternatives

Youth Services. As an organizer with Black Youth Project 100 (BYP 100), he was involved in street-team campaigns to raise the minimum wage for workers across the city, and cultivated strategies to build membership and involvement in community initiatives. He has also worked with Lawndale AMACHI Mentoring Program, building relationships with Black boys in need of guidance. Cartman’s participation in the All-African People’s Revolutionary Party (AAPRP) gave him a cultural and political foundation of the African diaspora. His wide array of experiences and his proven accomplishments have gained him valuable national networks and resources that will help him in his new role. He continues the dedication to Real Men Charities cultivated by his parents, who were longstanding members of Real Men Charities and supported the organization’s events and endeavors. Cartman gives particular credit to his late father Thabiti Cartman, a noted chiropractor, whose practice was devoted to wellness and healing. In making the announcement, the Moyos chronicled Real Men Charities’ journey that was incorporated in 2003. It was created to serve as a charitable-organization umbrella for Real Men Cook, which is now entering its 28th year. Driven by the Moyos’ leadership, this signature event has evolved from a one-day celebration that showcases responsible fatherhood, to a year-round movement. It has centered much of its expanded effort on health awareness including childhood obesity, prostate cancer, diabetes, heart disease, HIV AIDS and other community health challenges. Real Men Charities’ national focus includes work on the White
StoryCorps in Chicago is partnering with several Chicago community-based organizations for an upcoming event on March 11th, “Dismantling Barriers to Life: A speak out on mass incarceration”, to explore the impacts of mass incarceration within the Chicago community. Co-hosts for the event include Cabrini Green Legal Aid, Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation, Community Renewal Society, Growing Home, and Transformative Justice Law Project of Illinois. These organizations are among those in Illinois providing direct services to individuals and families impacted by mass incarceration. They have also partnered with StoryCorps in Chicago to record first-person accounts so that these experiences are preserved in
House Fatherhood and Male Responsibility initiatives. Like the organization he is charged to lead, and inspired by his father’s example, Cartman is committed to promoting a threefold platform centered around revitalizing the state of wellness in Black men. Cartman has committed to using REAL MEN Comprehend, REAL MENding and REAL MENtality to “suffocate Chicago’s gun-violence by providing youth-led opportunities.” In praising Cartman’s appointment, Moyo said: “Ayinde Cartman’s experiences make him uniquely qualified to seize the Real Men Cook reins while strengthening the Real Men Cook brand with an array of forward-thinking ideas.” Rael Jackson, whose team led the Real Men Cook events for nearly a decade and serves as a member of Real Men Charities’ board of directors, also applauded Cartman’s selection. The new members of the Real Men Charities’ board represent a cross section of leaders who are bound by their commitment to build a strong leadership foundation that will last for many generations. They join an existing board that has charted the organization’s growth. Each board member has a compelling story that underscores a passionate commitment to the community and to Real Men Cook. The complete list of board members and their bios can be accessed at http://www. realmencook.com/Board.html Moyo said that the selection of Ayinde Cartman as executive director and the new board “build on a strong tradition of increasing, uplifting and celebrating the roles of Black men in the community. I am confident that the new leaders will steer
this nation’s historical record. Some of these interviews have aired on WBEZ and are archived at StoryCorps, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Museum. The event is affiliated with the StoryCorps Justice Project (SCJP), Storycorps’ newest initiative, which aims to amplify and preserve the stories of people whose lives have been impacted by mass incarceration and the justice system nationwide. The StoryCorps Justice Project is a grant recipient of the Safety + Justice Challenge Network, an initiative of John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

GENERATE CAPITAL FOR YOUR BUSINESS IN TODAY’S ECONOMY
1
5 Ways to Raise Capital and Start a Business Raising capital to start a new business is not as easy as setting up a lemonade stand or selling Girl Scout cookies. A primary reason for the failure of start-ups is a lack of funding. There are plenty of great products and ideas that have never come close to making it to the public. Without American entrepreneurship, and the drive to just go for it, we would not have Apple, Google, Facebook, Starbucks, or countless other companies that are a part of our everyday lives. Here are five ways to generate capital for your business in today’s economy:
Innovative Cancer Imager Earns Illinois Tech Professor Prestigious NSF CAREER Award Chicago – Illinois Tech Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering Kenneth Tichauer has been awarded a prestigious NSF CAREER Award in the amount of $568,245 to perfect a medical imager that could lead to earlier detection/diagnosis and targeted drug development for cancer patients. According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.5 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed this year. Tichauer’s project, “Development of Enhanced Early Photon Tomography for Cancer Staging,” involves the ADEPT Cancer Imager, which will enable more accurate measures of the molecular environment of an individual’s cancer. Treatment strategies can then be tailored on a personalized level—a process known as personalized medicine. Tichauer and his ADEPT team are also the finalists of Illinois Tech’s Nayar Prize I, a $1 million prize package funded by the family foundation of an Illinois Tech alumnus. The team has built an imager prototype and has applied for a patent. Members are now collaborating with two cancer experts from the University of Chicago and Georgetown University on how to best bridge the gap between testing the ADEPT system and using it in hospitals. The NSF CAREER Award is one of the agency’s top honors given to junior faculty members. The award program supports faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research within the context of the mission of their organizations.
Generate capital for your business in today’s economy.
1
Friends and Family. A tried and true methodology, this has been a staple of start-up funding for hundreds of years. It is however, not without its risks, as a failed business could lead to strained relationships. or even the end of relationships.
2
SBA Express. The Small Business Association provides several avenues for borrowing money. SBA Express allows bankqualified business owners to borrow up to $150,000 without filing the typical SBA loan application. Plus, owners will receive a loan decision within 36 hours.
3
Community banks. Community banks actually have the capacity to be flexible with lending terms whereas large corporate banks do not. Find local lenders by reaching out to the Independent Bankers Association of America, which has access to 5,000 community banks.
4
Crowdfunding. Crowdfunding networks like Kickstarter and Indiegogo have raised some serious cash from individual investors. If you have an innovative idea or project, develop a reasonable
funding goal and timeline and see which investors support you and pledge funding. Remember, projects must meet their funding goals before the time runs out, or else no actual money is received. Also, be aware that a percentage of the money raised will be kept by the crowdfunding site as part of their fees.
5
DPOUSA. DPOUSA is an online financial platform providing client companies the opportunity to have 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year visibility of a direct public offering to a growing base of over 33,000 accredited investors and institutions representing over $500 billion in available capital. Unique to DPOUSA is the DPOUSA Special Council, a diverse cross-section of 50 professionals from various industries available to assist DPOUSA client companies. Visit www.DPOUSA. com for more information. Whatever the state of the economy, there will be those willing to invest in new businesses. New businesses create jobs, and power growth. There are sources to help with capital. So, once you find the sources, be ready with a great plan to show what you are going to do with the capital, and how the investor will benefit.
BLACKS RETURN TO THE LABOR MARKET AND FIND JOBS, BLS REPORT SAYS By Freddie Allen (Managing Editor, NNPA Newswire)
The Black unemployment rate continued to improve falling from 7.8 percent in December to 7.7 percent in January, according to the latest jobs report from the Labor Department. The labor force participation rate for Blacks, which is the share of workers who are employed or looking for jobs, increased from 61.8 percent in December to 62.4 percent in January. The employmentpopulation ratio (E-POP), the share of people who hold jobs compared to the total population, edged up from 57 percent in December to 57.5 percent last month. Compared to December, more Blacks entered the job market and found work in
January. The economy added 227,000 jobs in January. Retail trade, construction, and financial activities saw the greatest gains in jobs, the report said. Even though much of the data was collected before President Donald Trump took office, Trump Administration officials were quick to take credit for the solid jobs report. Economist Kate Bahn of the Center for American Progress, an independent nonpartisan policy institute dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans, said that the most recent jobs report was, “the final release of data that reflects how the labor market fared under President Barack Obama, with 227,000 jobs added—near the average for the past two years.”

Commentary
The Immigration Enforcement Police State is Here by Thomas L. Knapp
February 7: Muhammad Ali, Jr., returning to the US from a speaking engagement in Jamaica, is detained for two hours at Florida’s Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and questioned about his name and religious beliefs. February 22: Passengers disembarking from a domestic (San Francisco to New York) flight at JFK airport are held up by US Customs and Border Protection agents demanding their IDs. February 24: Jeffrey Tucker of the Foundation for Economic Education clears the usual security checks at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport en route to Mexico. Then, while actually boarding the plane, he and the other passengers on the flight are stopped by US Marshals demanding that they submit to retinal scans. You’re probably thinking that this is the point where I’ll take a break to blame Donald Trump. It isn’t. It’s the point where I’ll take a break to remind Americans who’ve been voting for politicians who promise to “secure the border” and other such authoritarian nonsense that THIS is exactly what they’ve been voting for. When advocating for the libertarian position on immigration (“open borders,” which
also happens to have been the position Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush both took in the 1980 Republican presidential primary debates) I usually prefer to stick to the moral argument. That argument, put simply, is that where peaceful people move to, settle or work is nobody’s business but theirs. But there are practical arguments against America’s increasingly draconian immigration laws too. Enforcement is expensive but, fortunately, almost certain to be ineffectual (if it worked, severe economic downturn would be the result). The most important of the practical arguments, in my opinion, is that a police state built to persecute immigrants will necessarily persecute everyone else as well. I’ve spoken with friends who traveled in the old Soviet Union and eastern Europe before the Berlin Wall came down. They see near-complete similarity between those regimes and the operations of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection and Border Patrol forces. The difference between pre-reunification East Germany and the 100-mile wide “constitution-free zone” along the US-Mexico border is the flag the agencies in question salute.
Recent administrations have worked to expand that zone to cover the entire country and the Trump administration seems bent on finishing the job. The near-total police state blossoming before our eyes is the inevitable result of America’s 70year romance with the astoundingly stupid idea that it’s the government’s business to monitor and control who travels, lives and works where. America had legally open borders for its first century as a nation, and nearly so for half a century after that. It wasn’t until after World War Two that one even needed a passport to enter or leave the United States. Open borders worked. Freedom worked. The subsequent seven decades of attempts at rigorous immigration control have irrefutably established that our choice is not between open borders and closed borders, but between immigration freedom or totalitarian government. And Americans’ time to stop the stampede toward the latter is running short. Thomas L. Knapp (Twitter: @ thomaslknapp) is director and senior news analyst at the William Lloyd Garrison Center for Libertarian Advocacy Journalism (thegarrisoncenter.org). Sanders Congratulates New DNC Chair LOS ANGELES – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders congratulated Tom Perez on Saturday after Perez was elected Chair of the Democratic National Committee. In a released statement, Sanders said, he was looking forward to working with Perez, adding, “At a time when Republicans control the White House, the U.S. House, U.S. Senate and two-thirds of all statehouses, it is imperative that Tom understands that the sameold, same-old is not working and that we must open the doors of the party to working people and young people in a way that has never been done before. Now, more than ever, the Democratic Party must make it clear that it is prepared to stand up to the 1 percent and lead this country forward in the fight for social, racial, economic and environmental justice.”

CELEBRATING “HERSTORY” DURING
WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
Entrepreneur, author and philanthropist,
HOLLY ROBINSON PEETE discusses juggling a multi-faceted life Continued from page 1 By N. Jayne Seward

eing glamorous and leading a ‘real’ life might seem like contradictory concepts, but it’s all a day in the life for actress Holly Robinson Peete. The multitalented actress, entrepreneur, author and philanthropist is currently shooting the second season of her family docu-series “For Peete’s Sake”with her husband, former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete, their four children and her mother, Dolores. The show gives a positive spin to reality TV by sharing their lives, everyday challenges and their journey with son RJ, who has autism. Being a mom, career woman and shooting a docu-series can be demanding, but Robinson Peete juggles her multi-faceted life in style. The actress recently launched a namesake clothing line, HRP by Holly Robinson Peete, exclusively available at EVINE Live. The collection, which she wears on her show, reflects her funky everyday “casual couture” look. In a photo shoot for the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA), Robinson Peete, who starred in the hit feature film “21 Jump Street,” and television series “Chicago Fire,” looked stunning in the spectacular jewelry designed by the 2016 Summer AGTA Spectrum Award™ winners. Robinson Peete wears simple jewelry such as gold and silver hoops as her “go to” daytime look, but glamorous jewelry and gemstones are very much a part of her lifestyle. “It’s funny because my line [HRP] is really about the casual mom, but listen, I’m on red carpets,” she said. “It’s really important to me to accessorize,” explained Robinson Peete who loves to dress up and wear dramatic gowns when she steps out in Hollywood. “When I step it up, I try to go all the way,” she said. “I’ve
been in this business for 30 years so I’ve seen all different types of jewelry and Diamonds, but what is so unique about the gemstones is that there’s a story behind everything and the colors are so bright and brilliant and different - and I get off on color,” said Robinson Peete. “When I did this photo shoot, every time they would hand me something else to put on, it was like each item gave you a certain feeling and put you in a certain mood. I loved them all.” During the shoot, Robinson Peete wore a spectacular platinum pendant featuring a 13.44mm golden South Sea cultured Pearl accented with Diamonds by Judy Evans, Oliver & Espig Gallery of Fine Arts, which won the “Best Use of Pearls” title at the AGTA Spectrum Awards™. The piece was complimented by other winning jewelry including Ricardo Basta, E. Eichberg, Inc.’s stunning “Honey” ring which features a Heliodor accented with Sapphires and Diamonds and won in the “Business/ Day Wear” category. “You know jewelry is spectacular when you want to plan an outfit around it,” said Peete. “Rarely do you build around jewelry, but these gemstones are so spectacular and so fun,” explained the actress who highlighted Citrines and Sapphires as two of her favorite stones. During the photo shoot, she wore a royal blue Caroline Herrera gown which was accented with jewelry from the AGTA Spectrum Awards™ “Evening Wear” category - a black Opal ring with Sapphires and Diamonds by Phillip Dismuke, Jewelsmith, Inc. that took second place honors and a stunning pendant by Robert Pelliccia, J.R. Dunn Jewelers featuring a boulder Opal accented with blue and pink Sapphires and Diamonds on a black Diamond bead necklace that captured third place in the category. While Robinson Peete has a wonderful family and many achievements, her life has

not been without challenges. When her father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, her world changed. “My dad [has] been gone for 14 years now, but his struggle with Parkinson’s led us to a life of service,” said Robinson Peete. Inspired to help those affected by Parkinson’s, she and Rodney founded the HollyRod Foundation in 1997. After their son, RJ, was diagnosed with autism they expanded the mission of HollyRod to also provide support and resources to families affected by autism. To help raise funds for the foundation, every year they hold events such as DesignCare - and fashion and entertainment are very much on the agenda.
While fashion is a highlight of DesignCare, HollyRod, most importantly, has been able to help many people thanks to the support of dedicated friends and sponsors. “We’re really blessed to have great partners,” said Robinson Peete. “One in 68 kids are affected by autism spectrum disorder. It’s on the rise and what happens is a lot of these children have no access to therapy services or any compassionate care and the same with Parkinson’s,” she said. “It’s really rewarding to give back.” she said. “We’ve been really blessed to be able to pay it forward.” For more information about DesignCare and the HollyRod Foundation visit www.hollyrod.org.

A Date with Destiny:
Video Games Teach Kids Life Lessons It’s an undeniable fact. Among cash, gift cards and the “toy of the moment,” kids want video games. Rail against it all you want, that’s the reality. But take heart, parents, today’s video games can teach kids valuable life lessons not learned in a classroom. For those that scoff at the idea that video games have value beyond hours of mindless entertainment, Sherry Turkel, a professor and researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology says, “think again.” “The games demand skills that are complex,” Turkel told The Washington Post in an interview. “There is learning how to learn? There is nothing mindless about mastering a video game.” One game that is getting attention for its complexity and teachable moments is Bungie and Activition’s Destiny games, a bold world of action and adventure where kids are a Guardian of the last safe city on Earth. If you’re a veteran and have followed the game from its inception, you may like the newest release, Destiny: Rise of Iron. If you’re a newbie, Destiny -- The Collection, contains five games in one collection, including the newest release from the award winning franchise. And best of all, it’s available for just $59.99. Still not convinced? The following skills are just a few underlying themes in the Destiny
franchise that teach kids lessons outside of simple distraction: * Astronomy. The game offers a futuristic fictional scenario of our Solar System, where humans colonized other planets but were mysteriously brought to the brink of extinction (with known survivors now living in and defending Earth’s last city from alien invaders). * Problem solving and creativity. In Destiny, players not only fend off alien antagonists, but must also solve mysteries, create their own avatar race and class, and complete multiple tasks. * Hand eye coordination. As a shooter-based game, Destiny features combat against an onslaught of alien enemy attacks from all angles. * Team work. The game contains threeplayer strikes and six-player raids, requiring communication and teamwork. * Socialization. Unlike other similar shooterbased games, Destiny does not have blood, gore, or adult content. Instead, the game is rated T for teen and focuses on sci-fi fantasy and discovery, making it a perfect game for parents and siblings as well. Currently Destiny -- The Collection and Destiny: Rise of Iron are both offered on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. For more information, visit www. destinythegame.com.
