DOLTON 149 STUDENTS MAKE SIGNIFICANT READING, MATH GAINS ON STATE TEST
Calumet City, Ill. — Students in Dolton School District 149 have made significant increases in reading and math performance on a key state test, according to district officials.
Student results on the 2024 Illinois Assessment of Readiness test compared to 2019 mark both a recovery from the learning disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and real reading and math growth from before the public health crisis that began in 2020.
According to the 2024 IAR test results, despite earlier experienced learning loss, there has been a steady increase in students meeting or exceeding grade level standards. The percentage of Dolton students that met or exceeded grade level in English Language Arts grew to 14.5% in 2024 compared to pre-covid’s highest performance of 12.7% in 2019. Likewise in math, the percentage of students who met or exceeded grade level in 2024 increased to a post pandemic record 6% compared to just 4.8% in 2019. These improvements show that Dolton 149 students have not only recovered some lost ground but also surpassed their pre-pandemic performance levels in those areas.
Dolton 149 Board of Education President Lolita Liggons praised the district’s educators and administrators.
The district’s approach to academic recovery included targeted interventions, expanded professional development for teachers, and enhanced support systems for students, according to Dr. White.

HBCU Honors Celebrates Black Excellence
Continued from page 1
BY TIA CAROL JONES
Recently, HBCU Honors hosted its 2nd Annual HBCU Honors Award Ceremony. Emmy-nominated filmmaker Will Packer, who graduated from Florida A&M University (FAMU), received the HBCU Honors Industry Impact Award, presented by Mielle. Dr. Lonnie Johnson, Tuskegee University graduate, former NASA engineer, and inventor of the Super Soaker, received the HBCU Honors Innovation Trailblazer Award, which was presented by Florida A&M University alum Marcos Purty, Vice President of Global Quality, Supplier Quality, and Operational Excellence at General Motors. Jewel Burks Solomon, a Howard University graduate, entrepreneur, and advocate for women and diversity in technology, was presented with the HBCU Honors Founders Award by Kelesha Armand, Spelman College Alumna, and General Counsel of Consumer Banking and Deputy General Counsel of Consumer & Community Banking at JP Morgan Chase.
Bailey talked to the Citizen Newspaper about what led her to create HBCU Honors and how her own experience attending Spelman College shaped her life.
Citizen Newspaper: Why did you want to develop HBCU Honors?
Michelle M. Bailey: HBCU Honors was born out of a deep desire to spotlight the incredible contributions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities and their alumni. These institutions have been the foundation of excellence and progress for generations, yet their stories often go untold.
In a time when the Black community’s contributions aren’t always valued or respected as they should be, it’s more important than ever to provide inspirational programming that uplifts and celebrates our culture. HBCU Honors is about showing the world the brilliance and resilience that defines us, while also creating a platform that inspires the next generation to dream bigger, achieve more, and feel seen and valued for who they are.
These leaders stand as living testaments to the transformative power of HBCUs, reminding us of all the boundless potential within our communities and inspiring others to dream and achieve beyond their limits.
Citizen: How integral was your own attendance at an HBCU to the success that you have now?
Bailey: Attending an HBCU was transformative for me. Spelman College was a game changer!! It instilled in me a sense of purpose, pride, and responsibility to give back. The nurturing environment, the sisterhood, coupled with high expectations, developed the confidence and skills needed to succeed in any arena. Like Will Packer said in his speech, at my HBCU I was made to feel that I can do anything! My HBCU experience is at the core of everything I do, including the creation of HBCU Honors.
Citizen: What do you see as the lasting legacy of HBCU Honors?
Bailey: The lasting legacy of HBCU Honors is the celebration of excellence, inspiration, and empowerment. It’s about honoring the rich history and enduring contributions of HBCUs while igniting a vision for a future filled with unlimited potential.
I am profoundly grateful to have partners who believe in this vision, like Expectant Media, and amazing sponsors like this year’s presenting sponsor, P&G, who make it possible to bring this dream to life. Together, we’re creating something that not only honors the past but also lights the path forward for the future.
Citizen: How important is it to celebrate people through the HBCU Honors Awards?
Bailey: It’s incredibly important. Supporting and recognizing others is not just something I do—it’s a core part of who I am. My mantra has always been to support and recognize others! Celebrating notables through HBCU Honors goes beyond mere recognition; it’s about validation, inspiration, and empowerment.
When we honor the trailblazers, visionaries, and change-makers from HBCUs, we’re sending a powerful message: “Your contributions matter, your work is valued, and your legacy will endure.” This celebration serves as a beacon of hope and motivation, especially for those who follow in their footsteps, showing the next generation what is possible when excellence meets opportunity.
It also reaffirms the significance of HBCUs as institutions that continue to shape our culture, drive progress, and create a lasting impact on society.
Citizen: What led to choosing the leaders for this year’s event?
Bailey: The leaders we selected this year truly embody the spirit of HBCUs: resilience, innovation, and a deep commitment to community empowerment. Each honoree and participant has not only achieved excellence in their respective fields but has also used their platform to uplift others and create pathways for future generations.
Our choices were guided by a heartfelt desire to showcase the incredible diversity of talent across industries while honoring individuals who reflect the very best of what HBCUs have to offer.
HBCU Honors preserves the stories that deserve to be told, amplifies the historic achievements of trailblazers who paved the way, and creates opportunities for continued growth and excellence within our communities. It stands as a bridge— connecting the legacy of resilience and progress with the aspirations of the next generation, ensuring that the impact of HBCUs is felt not just today, but for generations to come.
Citizen: What do you hope the next generation takes away from HBCU Honors?
Bailey: My hope is that the next generation feels a profound sense of pride, connection, and inspiration. We want them to see themselves reflected in the stories of excellence and resilience that define HBCUs and leave with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the transformative impact these institutions have had on our nation.
More importantly, we want viewers to feel empowered—to support HBCUs in meaningful ways, whether by attending, donating, or simply sharing their stories with others. By fostering this connection, we aim to ensure that the legacy of HBCUs continues to thrive, empowering future generations to dream bigger, achieve more, and honor the institutions that have been pivotal to our collective progress.
Citizen: What’s next for you and HBCU Honors going into 2025?
Bailey: Looking ahead to 2025, our vision is to expand the reach and deepen the impact of HBCU Honors. We’re dedicated to creating even more opportunities for collaboration, introducing fresh and dynamic programming, and ensuring the event continues to shine as a premier celebration of HBCU culture and excellence.
At the heart of our mission is a commitment to growth—not just for the platform, but for the communities we serve. We’ll continue exploring innovative ways to support education, provide scholarships, and uplift the next generation of leaders. 2025 marks a new chapter for HBCU Honors, and we’re excited to build on its legacy while amplifying its influence and importance on a national scale.
Citizen: Where can people go to find out more about you and HBCU Honors?

“Since day one, Aspen Dental practices have been ‘yes’ organizations, breaking down barriers so patients can access the care they so desperately need,” said Bob Fontana, chairman and chief executive officer at The Aspen Group. “Back in 2014, we saw an opportunity to make an even deeper impact by serving a group incredibly deserving of care: our nation’s veterans. That’s how the Healthy Mouth Movement was born, and it’s incredible to see how far we’ve come.”
To mark the 10-year milestone, Aspen Dental launched the Decade of Smiles initiative, where veterans in 10 communities nationwide are receiving free, start-to-finish smile makeovers.
From its beginnings with the Aspen Dental MouthMobile—a 42-foot mobile dental clinic that traveled more than 150,000 miles delivering care—to more recent initiatives such as Day of Service, Smile for Your Service, and overseas outreach trips, the program has transformed to meet the evolving oral health needs of the communities it serves. Most recently, the 2022 opening of the TAG Oral Care Center for Excellence in Chicago has further expanded access to free dental care for underserved individuals in Illinois, donating more than $10 million in free services in just two years.

Overseas Outreach: Aspen Dental care teams travel around the world to bring free dental care and education to patients in areas of high need.

The Aspen Dental MouthMobile: A mobile dental office that traveled 150,000 miles from 2014-2020 to provide care to veterans and other underserved communities.
“As we move into our second decade, we’re reimagining the future of this program to make an even bigger difference while staying true to the mission that has driven us from the start.” Fontana said.

UrbanGeekz Unveils 2nd Annual UrbanGeekz 50 List
Highlighting Leaders in Tech, Innovation and Entrepreneurship
ATLANTA, PRNewswire -- Independent Black-owned digital news outlet UrbanGeekz has unveiled its 2nd annual UrbanGeekz 50: Gamechangers in Tech, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship List, recognizing fifty outstanding leaders in tech, venture, entrepreneurship, and the innovation economy.
Drawing on UrbanGeekz’s work and recommendations from independent industry experts, UrbanGeekz 50 2024 celebrates trailblazing disruptors in various industries across three continents. Using a unique set of data points, honorees were assessed on the reach, influence, and significance of their work.
“We will continue to pay homage to disputers who provide community, mentorship, much-needed resources.”
The list celebrates brilliant technologists, founders who’ve raised millions of dollars, and exceptional leaders of Black-led unicorns: game-changers like Candace Mitchell, Shola Akinlade, Fawn Weaver, and Lamar Tyler, to name a few.
Once again, this year’s listicle is curated into ten verticals that highlight mainly, but not exclusively, tech. The categories are Software, Venture, FinTech, AI & Machine Learning, Digital Media, Food, Climate & Health, Business-to-Consumer, Community Builders & Ecosystem Warriors, Africa, and Europe.
“Most of our honorees are Black Americans,” said UrbanGeekz founder and CEO Kunbi Tinuoye. “However, as we extend our international coverage, we will continue highlighting Africa and Europe’s best and brightest minds.”
“Much like last year, Community Builders & Ecosystem Warriors is a prominent cohort,” adds Tinuoye. “We will continue to pay homage to disputers who provide community, mentorship, much-needed resources, and financial opportunities to help Black innovators thrive, often against the odds.”
“This year, we exclusively highlighted Black men in our Digital Media vertical. With so many skewed narratives centered around our brothas, we want to celebrate Black men’s contributions to reclaiming their narratives with nuanced storytelling that highlights the complexity and diverse aspects of Black culture.”
“One notable leader in our Digital vertical is
DéVon Christopher Johnson, CEO of BleuLife Media Group, a full-scale media company targeting a multicultural male audience. Johnson is also the co-founder of the Black Owned Media Equity & Sustainability Institute (BOMESI), a nonprofit organization quietly working behind the scenes to empower Black-owned media outlets to scale their operations.”
Some standout players on this year’s list include technologist Candace Mitchell, the gifted Georgia Tech alum who has diligently scaled her AI-driven hair brand into a global powerhouse for the better part of 12 years.
Other notable awardees include Asegun Henry, the founder and CTO of Fourth Power. He has spent the past decade developing new industrial-scale energy technologies to mitigate climate change. Henry’s research has led to multiple scientific breakthroughs that have redefined the limits of what’s possible.

MIT alum Sam Udotong is the co-founder and CTO of Fireflies.ai, which uses generative AI to make meetings easy for participants. The company has raised over $19 million and scaled significantly over the past year.
“This year’s sponsor is SL DeBarros Law Firm, which provides legal representation in business, labor & employment, and sports & entertainment.”
Dream Exchange Sponsors Fireside Chat in Chicago for Local Business Leaders and Entrepreneurs
CHICAGO, PRNewswire -- Dream Exchange, recently hosted a fireside chat at the Union League Club in Chicago with the local minority business community. The event took place on Tuesday, November 19th, 2024, and featured notable panelists Dwain Kyles, Managing Member of DX Capital Partners, LLC, and Lorri Dotson, a Dream Exchange investor, Founder/CEO of VISION Group Cleaning and President of Fleetwood Cleaning Services of GA Inc.
The central theme of the discussion was how the lack of access to capital for minority-owned businesses, can be overcome by the Main Street Growth Act (“MSGA”), a bill that, once enacted, will allow for the creation of venture exchanges. A venture exchange is a financial marketplace specifically designed for buying and selling securities of small and emerging companies, often in their early stages of development. The fireside chat provided a unique platform for members of the community and busi-
ness leaders to explore the future of public capital markets and Dream Exchange’s mission to create a more accessible financial landscape.
Dwain Kyles emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “We are committed to changing the financial landscape for minority entrepreneurs by creating a system that provides access to capital and resources that were previously out of reach. Fireside chats allow us to connect directly with stakeholders to let them know how Dream Exchange will help facilitate access to capital for business owners.”
Lorri Dotson added, “Dream Exchange is not only helping to reshape the current economic landscape in financial markets, but also leading a charge towards greater representation and equity in the business world. It’s an honor to be part of this groundbreaking initiative.”
Joe Cecala, Founder and CEO of Dream Exchange, remarked on the event’s importance,
“Our mission is to connect with the local Chicago business community, particularly those from underrepresented groups. By highlighting the MSGA, we are paving the way for a future where all entrepreneurs have equal access to opportunities and capital.”
This fireside chat is part of Dream Exchange’s ongoing efforts to engage with diverse communities and foster meaningful discussions about the future of entrepreneurship and financial empowerment.
The Dream Exchange has submitted a preliminary draft of its application to the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) to become the first minority-controlled company to operate a licensed stock exchange in the history of the United States and is in the process of responding to comments from the SEC, as well as preparing its operations for when it receives approval. In addition, Dream Exchange is championing the creation of a new type of stock exchange called a venture exchange, which will list and trade the securities of smaller, early-stage companies. Dream Exchange’s mission is to create equal access to a marketplace that instills ethics, humanity, and fairness into finance.

Each team member received several pairs of AND1’s performance basketball shoes — the “Attack 3’s” and the “Mad Game” line. Furthermore, AND1 designed a special Wilberforce player edition sneaker line that players will debut this season, highlighting the pride and spirit of the university.

AND1 Brand Director/ Head of Sports Marketing, Dexter Gordon, “We are honored to partner with Wilberforce University, a pioneer in education and a beacon of cultural heritage. When Coach Rachel

Seeing the excitement on the students’ faces as they received their new gear was incredibly rewarding for our team. We look forward to a successful partnership and many great moments on and off the court.”
The students at Wilberforce University were thrilled to receive their new gear, expressing their excitement and gratitude for the high-quality equipment and the opportunity to represent their university with pride. “I’ve never had a basketball shoot like that before for our team media day, and they truly made me feel like a star. Beyond a Diamond Lookalike, Discovering Zircon’s True Beauty
BY JOSEPH DENABURG, LEVY’S FINE JEWELRY
Once known as a “diamond impersonator” in the early 1900s, zircon has evolved into a celebrated gemstone of beauty and elegance. As one of December’s birthstones, zircon shines with vibrant hues and a rich history.
The most popular color of zircon is blue with a slight greenish tint, but it can also be found in red, pink, brown, yellow, hazel, black, or even colorless varieties. This diverse gemstone is mined worldwide in countries such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, Korea, Madagascar, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nigeria, Norway, Tanzania, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Zircon’s Eastern Roots
Zircon’s legacy stretches back centuries in Middle Eastern and Asian cultures. The name “zircon” is derived from the Persian word “zargun,” meaning “gold-colored.” In Hindu culture, poets often referenced the Kalpa Tree, an ultimate gift to the gods said to be adorned with gemstone fruits and zircon leaves.
Mystical and Healing Properties of Zircon
Throughout history, zircon has been valued for its mystical qualities. During the Middle Ages, it was believed to aid in sleep and bring prosperity and wisdom to its owner. It was even used to treat various ailments, from varicose veins to blisters.
Zircon and Earth’s Ancient History
Zircon’s scientific importance emerged recently with the discovery of a piece in Australia dated back 4.4 billion years, making it the oldest known piece of Earth’s crust. The stone’s oxygen isotope ratio suggests Earth may have been cool enough to sustain water—and potentially life—earlier than previously thought.
Fun Facts About Zircon
George Kunz, famed Tiffany & Co. gemologist, adored zircon and suggested renaming it “starlite” to emphasize its fiery brilliance.
Most blue zircons available today are heat-treated from brown stones.
Australia is the top producer of zircon, supplying 37% of the world’s annual demand.
With its fascinating colors and rich history, zircon is a treasured gem that goes far beyond its early days as a “diamond lookalike.”

Get Your House In Order
This time of year, is a convergence of cultural celebrations. My hope is that we focus on the unifying principles of these celebrations and bring unity to our community – Umoja.
My mother, Martha Collins, was a great teacher of biblical based principles for living mixed with southern witticism. My brother, Clarence Collins III and I enjoy trading off the many sayings that we were taught by both of our parents, but most especially our mom. You too may have heard and heeded these sayings and scriptures. It is my intent to remind you of the things you already know about, so you can bring them about to improve your world, your affairs, to better your circumstances and conditions to “get your house in order.”
Bren Sheriff
Make a resolution this year to act on what you know to do to bring unity between the generations in your family, especially as it relates to your family’s fiscal wellbeing. Here are a few reminders: “When you know better, you should do better.” “Don’t put off for tomorrow what you can do today.” “Procrastination is the theft of time.” “Study to show yourself approved unto God. 2 Timothy 2:15” “What you don’t know about, you can’t bring about.” “Hard heads make a soft behind.” “This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad (God Like All Day) in it. Psalms 118:24” “What you think about, you bring about.” “Kujichagulia – self determination”
These are just a few statements that may help you to frame your thoughts to support your decision to follow through on your new year’s resolutions. If so, Happy New You!!! It’s already alright. Bye for now, Bren.

Experian’s Legacy League Game Show™
Celebrates One-Year Anniversary of Empowering HBCU and HSI Students
(Black PR Wire) COSTA MESA, Calif. -- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Experian is celebrating the one-year anniversary of The Legacy League Game Show™, a groundbreaking, high-energy, interactive event designed to educate and engage young adults in financial literacy. The main program within the B.A.L.L. for Life™ initiative, the game show combines the excitement of trivia and audience participation in a competition where students face off against their peers from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), testing their knowledge about credit and money matters.
Forty percent of consumers under the age of 25 are credit invisible, which disproportionately affects communities of color (26% of Hispanic and 28% of Black consumers, compared to 16% of white and 16% of Asian consumers). The Legacy League Game Show™ fosters a deeper understanding of credit, debt management, and overall financial wellness. Close to 100% of attendees surveyed say they gained new knowledge from the experience.
“We’re thrilled to celebrate the one-year anniversary of The Legacy League Game Show™ and its positive impact on young consumers across the country,” said Raudy Perez, senior director of external diversity, equity and inclusion partnerships. “While I was growing up, we didn’t talk about money matters in my household; I know first-hand that normalizing and modernizing the conversation about money and credit for young people is key to financial literacy and generational wealth building. By blending the excitement of a game show with real-world financial lessons, we’ve created a unique experience that makes learning about credit and finances feel exciting and relevant to people’s everyday lives.”
The Legacy League Game Show™ marked its one-year anniversary where it debuted in 2023: at EntreprenUTSA at the University of Texas San Antonio, for which Experian was a lead sponsor. The show has traveled to 10 universities and events in the U.S. including the National Urban League 2024 convention, UnidosUS Education Summit, Morgan State and Shaw Universities. Special guests have joined the fun, including rapper and college basketball standout Flau’jae, comedian and actor Mike Merrill, Louisiana State University wide receiver Chris Hilton, Jr. and Grammy-nominated D Smoke.
“The Legacy League Game Show™, powered by Experian’s B.A.L.L. for Life program, has transformed how the National Urban League attendees engage with
financial literacy content,” said Kristian Buchanan Newman, vice president of Partnerships Activations for the National Urban League. “This dynamic, interactive experience has entertained and empowered participants to take control of their financial futures in a modern way. Experian has redefined how we talk about credit and wealth-building, creating lasting impact and meaningful connections for our movement.”
“The Legacy League Game Show™ is an amazing innovative, high energy, fun, impactful way to teach credit to young people, and the older generation as well. The integration of music, colors, entertainers, and games that students see on television, along with the prizes and the technical learning is extremely engaging and long lasting. This is a model for how to teach anything to Gen Z and other generations,” said Gwen Garnett, executive director of the Center for Financial Advancement at HomeFree-USA.
In 2025, The Legacy League Game Show™ will continue its tour at schools and events across the United States including:
#IYKYK Pitch Competition (If You Know You Know) in partnership with HomeFree-USA

Caregiving Stress Linked to High Blood Pressure in Younger Black Women
NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- A new analysis finds that the stress of being a caregiver is associated with an increased risk of developing hypertension in 21 to 44-year-old Black women, a group known to have a higher prevalence of the condition compared to women of other racial and ethnic groups. Caregiving has been linked by past studies to high blood pressure in middle-aged and older black women, but this relationship has been understudied in this younger group.
Published online recently in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension, the new study shows that, with an average follow-up of 7.4 years, 43.5% of all participants developed hypertension. The research team, led by researchers at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine, also found that 51.7 percent of study participants that reported having moderate or high caregiving stress developed hypertension versus 40.6 percent of those with low caregiving stress or none.
eral, Dr. Vivek Murthy, saying that parents and caregivers over the last decade have experienced much higher levels of stress and mental health issues than non-caregivers. Caregiving is a source of chronic stress that is particularly important for women as they make up the majority of informal caregivers, say the authors.
Study Detail
“Our analysis suggests that caregiver strain as a source of chronic stress may significantly contribute to the development of hypertension, a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, among reproductive-age Black women,” says corresponding study author Milla Arabadjian, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Foundations of Medicine at NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine.
Among younger Black women with hypertension, rates of uncontrolled blood pressure are high, and finding “addressable” risk factors (like caregiving stress) is important for tailoring prevention for this population.
The study finding was made even more relevant by an advisory issued recently by the United States Surgeon Gen-
The current study authors examined the links between caregiving stress, caregiving of high-needs dependents, and hypertension among reproductive-age women enrolled in the Jackson Heart Study (JHS). The new work is a secondary analysis of the JHS, one of the largest long-term (longitudinal), group studies focused on the cardiovascular health of Black adults. The JHS, which started collecting data in 2000, follows the health of more than 5300 Black adults from 3 Mississippi counties, with follow-up still underway.
Caregiving stress was assessed through patient responses to a key question within the global perceived stress scale, a standard measure where patients report on the stress affecting their lives. The caregiving stress question was: “Over the past 12 months, how much stress did you experience related to caring for others?” Responses were measured on a 4-point scale, ranging from (1) not stressful to (4) very stressful. To simplify the results, the team split responses into two groups reporting either no/low caregiving stress or moderate/high caregiving stress. JHS defines hypertension as systolic blood pressure above 140 mm Hg (milliliters of mercury, standard measure), diastolic blood pressure above 90 mm Hg, or self-report of taking antihypertensive medication at follow-up exams.
“Given the high lifetime risk of CVD especially among reproductive-age Black women, we need to better identify the root causes contributing to the strain,” says senior study author Tanya M. Spruill, PhD, associate professor in the departments of Population Health and Medicine at NYU Langone Health. “If a lack of affordable childcare is a source, then linkage to childcare resources could be one solution. If the source of strain is a communication challenge with a child or elderly relative, education might be tailored to help with that,” adds Dr. Spruill, who co-leads the Jackson Heart Study Hypertension Working Group, funding from which supported the current paper.
Another NYU Langone author was Yiwei Li, PhD, of the Division of Biostatistics in the Department of Population Health. Also making important contributions to the study were authors Calvin L. Colvin, MSPH, of the Mailman School of Public Health and Jacquelyn Y. Taylor, PhD, PNP-BC, RN, FAHA, FAAN, of the School of Nursing, both at Columbia University; Miriam A. Miles of Heersink School of Medicine and Paul Muntner, PhD, of the School of Public Health, both at the University of Alabama at Birmingham; Byron C. Jaeger, PhD, in the Department of Biostatistics and Data Science at Wake Forest School of Medicine; Jolaade Kalinowski, Ed.D, in the Department of Human Development and Family Sciences at the University of Connecticut; Lenette M. Jones, PhD, RN, FAHA, at the University of Michigan School of Nursing, and Kenneth R. Butler, PhD, of the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
The Jackson Heart Study is supported by grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and the National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities, both part of the National Institutes of Health. The JHS is conducted in collaboration with Jackson State University and through grant HHSN268201800013I. The current analysis was also supported by funding from the NHLBI grant R01HL117323.
The Skin Cancer Foundation Shares Sun Protection Tips for Winter Sports Enthusiasts
NEW YORK — As fall turns to winter, we start to experience cooler weather and fewer sunlight hours. It can be tempting to slack off on sun protection when we feel cold, but protecting yourself from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays is imperative year-round — especially if you plan to spend time outdoors skiing, snowboarding or engaging in another cold-weather sport.
“Frostbite and windburn are common concerns for winter athletes, but people often don’t realize that the sun’s UV rays can be just as damaging on the slopes as they are on the beach,” says Deborah S. Sarnoff, MD, president of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “The science shows that it’s important to practice proper sun protection all year, even in cold or cloudy weather.”
Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which lead to tanning, dark spots and wrinkles, remain constant throughout the year and can penetrate through clouds and fog. Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which are mainly responsible for sunburn, are the strongest in the summer. However, UVB rays can burn and damage your skin during winter too, especially if you’re around reflective surfaces such as snow or ice. Snow reflects up to 80 percent of the sun’s UV light, so the rays hit you twice, further increasing your risk of skin cancer and premature aging.
Skiers and snowboarders are at an even greater risk because these sports take place at a higher altitude, where the thinner atmosphere absorbs fewer of the sun’s rays. UV radiation exposure increases 4 to 5 percent with every
1,000 feet above sea level.
In addition to causing premature skin aging, unprotected sun exposure is also a serious risk factor for skin cancer. About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 86 percent of melanomas are associated with exposure to UV radiation from the sun, which is why it’s imperative to protect yourself no matter the season.
How to Protect Yourself When Enjoying Winter Sports
Your first line of defense against sun damage is clothing. Covering up is easier when it’s cold. However, your face, head and neck tend to remain exposed yearround, and this is where most skin cancers occur. Skiers and snowboarders are ahead of the game when they protect their scalps with a helmet, and their eyes with goggles. Almost all goggles available today are made of polycarbonate, which filters out 100 percent of UV rays. For the moments you’re not actively flying down the slope, don’t forget your UV-blocking sunglasses, which protect your eyes while also fighting snow glare, and a hat to protect your head and hairline.
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 or higher daily to all exposed skin, and make sure to cover often-missed spots like the tops of your ears, around the eyes and near the hairline. Consider choosing a moisturizing sunscreen with ingredients like lanolin or glycerin to combat dry winter skin. Finally, try to avoid the peak sun hours (generally between 10 AM
and 2 PM in the winter months), and seek shade when you can.
Winter is approaching, but that’s no reason to let up on the sun-safe habits you practiced during the summer. Continuing sun protection efforts through the colder, cloudier months of the year reduces your risk of premature skin aging and developing the world’s most common cancer.
The Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, saves and improves lives by empowering people to take a proactive approach to daily sun protection and the early detection and treatment of skin cancer. The Foundation delivers public education programs, provides patients with guidance and reassurance, engages medical professionals, awards research grants and leads advocacy campaigns that call for policy changes. As a service to consumers, the SCF grants its industry-recognized Seal of Recommendation to products that meet its criteria for safe and effective sun protection. SCF also operates Destination Healthy Skin, a program that works with local dermatologists in communities around the U.S. to provide free skin cancer screenings and education to those in need. Since its inception in 1979, the Foundation has recommended regular skin exams and following a complete sun protection strategy that includes seeking shade, daily sunscreen use and covering up with clothing, hats and sunglasses. (StatePoint) A new study reveals Americans’ relationship with charitable giving. While generosity is a core value for three-quarters of Americans, economic concerns have caused some to tighten their purse strings. Nevertheless, many Americans are open to advice for how they can prioritize philanthropy.
In a new national survey from Wells Fargo, 29% of Americans report that they have given less to charity this year compared to last and 51% feel they don’t have enough money to give to charity at all. Even so, 67% of Americans reported giving something in the past year, with 54% saying they give to charity even though they don’t have a lot of extra money.
The study found that economic concern is a significant factor in declined giving, with 52% of Americans reporting that their reduced giving is a direct result of the current economy.
“The data shows us that the pinch of rising costs is driving a moral dilemma. Many Americans are in a standoff between what they want to do and what they can do,” says Stephanie Buckley, head of Trust Philanthropic Services with Wells Fargo Wealth & Investment Management.
Despite this dilemma, the study reveals that among the two in three Americans who made a charitable donation this year, 53% still report giving the same amount to charity as last year and another 19% report giving more. In fact, 60% of these Americans are so committed to their giving that they list charity as part of their budget and 24% will go as far as to defer their own financial needs in order to give.
Happiness Drives Giving
Driving factors of American giving are largely altruistic. The most common motivations cited are that it makes them happy, it aligns with their personal values, and because they have a personal connection to a cause. Comparatively, financial benefits have very little to do with it, with only 10% of Americans giving for tax deduction purposes.
“There is a mistaken belief that many people give for selfish reasons, particularly among the affluent. In actuality, no matter the level of wealth, giving tends to almost always be driven by wanting to make an impact, “says Buckley. “In fact, anonymous giving continues to be a rising trend.”
Givers Want to Be Strategic
While 52% of Americans don’t get any advice about charitable giving, 57% want to be more strategic about it—a sentiment that could be amplified by the fact that almost half of Americans report being bombarded with donation requests. Philanthropic experts warn that not having a plan can lead to a “smear the peanut butter” approach, where you write checks and donate without thinking about how it aligns to what’s really important to you. Information about intentional giving can be
found by visiting wellsfargo.com.
“Whether you are giving money, time or talent, having a plan can block out some of the
