RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY MARKED $4.2 MILLION 154TH STREET RECONSTRUCTION COMPLETION

HARVEY, IL. — After months of closure to motorists and pedestrians, 154th Street officially reopened, marking the completion of a $4.2 million reconstruction project that transformed the roadway from Wood Street to Broadway. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place in late December at 154th and Broadway to celebrate this significant milestone.

The extensive project included the installation of new curbs, freshly laid gutters, and a fully reconstructed roadway, eliminating potholes and enhancing infrastructure. During construction, workers uncovered historic trolley tracks and original brick pavers, connecting the project to the area’s history.

The improvements were made possible through funding from Cook County, the Regional Transportation Authority, The Nature Conservancy, the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Additional support came from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Rebuild Illinois Funds, Invest in Cook Programs, and other infrastructure-focused initiatives.

Key goals of the project included:

Upgraded roadway conditions for safer travel.

Enhanced drainage and reduced street flooding.

Installed green infrastructure to improve water quality and manage runoff.

Incorporated enhanced safety measures for all users.

“This project not only improves the roadway but also addresses critical environmental and safety concerns,” said Mayor Christopher J. Clark. “It’s a testament to what can be achieved when the community, government, and organizations work together for the betterment of our neighborhoods.”

Members of the community, local officials, and representatives from the funding organizations attended the ceremony to celebrate this achievement. Speakers included Mayor Christopher J. Clark, U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, and Illinois State Rep. William Davis.

SHUCKED Blends Escapism And Country Music, With A Tale Of Acceptance

Now Abraham is portraying Lulu in the National Touring proNow Abraham is portraying Lulu in the National Touring production of SHUCKED. They were also part of the Broadway production of the Tony award winning musical, which tells the story of people in a town who love corn and have to find a way to save it.

SHUCKED is playing for a limited engagement through Sunday, Jan. 19th, at Broadway In Chicago’s CIBC Theatre, 18 W. Monroe St.

Abraham’s love of theater led them to do a reality TV show in Los Angeles, The Glee Project, and get a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting.

“It’s something that has been ingrained in me ever since I remember. I don’t remember a time that I wasn’t an actor,” they said.

What brings them joy about acting right now is the escapism that enables them to step out of what’s going on in the world for the duration of a performance. Also, with everything going on in the world, Abraham said that being able to provide a respite for communities and people to be able to come into a space and forget all the negative things that are happening, is special and cathartic to them. It is a privilege they hold carefully and it feels really good in their body right now.

another job. In 2022, they auditioned and booked it, and did the production in Salt Lake City and moved with it to Broadway in New York City, as a swing, where they understudied for all the female roles, including Lulu, who they are playing now. On the Broadway run, Abraham went on 58 times for Lulu and now is playing the role eight times a week.

Alex Newell who originated the role of Lulu and won a Tony award for it and Abraham joined the company at the same time in Salt Lake City. Abraham said getting to watch Newell and understudy them in the role feels precious and special to them.

Abraham described Lulu as the matriarch of the town, who knows everything about everyone and doesn’t take mess from anyone.

Lulu is the cousin of the hero of the show, Maizy, and works at the whiskey distillery in town. Abraham’s favorite song from the musical is “Best Man Wins,” because of the harmony and choreography. Their favorite song to sing is “Friends,” the duet that Maizy and Lulu sing. They said that duet is one of the most beautiful songs in the musical theatre canon and a beautiful country song and moment in the show.

Abraham hopes people take away from the show that life doesn’t have to be as serious as it seems all the time and that it is good to take a moment and laugh and find a common thread with the people around them. Another takeaway with the show is to welcome people into their lives they don’t think they need.

Abraham wanted to audition for SHUCKED, because country music was the genre they enjoyed the most, aside from doing musical theatre. They always had a dream of being a country music singer and also performed in country music competitions growing up in Kentucky. When they found out about SHUCKED, which is a country musical, it was the perfect combination of both of their loves.

“The fact that it is a country musical just kind of felt like, “oh, this is kismet, this is exactly what it’s supposed to be.’ And, it just felt like one of those rare moments in life where a puzzle piece fits in and you’re like, ‘oh, this is what was supposed to happen,” they said.

SHUCKED has been an integral part of Abraham’s life for several years. They auditioned for the first time in 2021, but took

“I think something that is really special about this show is that it highlights the beauty of going outside of your comfort zone and meeting people that maybe you didn’t think were going to be a part of your community and then you learn about them and you accept them into your community, when you realize you have more in common than you think,” Abraham said.

Abraham hopes people respond to the musical with openness and are willing to go along for the ride.

Tickets for SHUCKED range from $35-$125, with a select number of premium tickets available. Tickets are available now for groups of 10 or more by calling Broadway In Chicago Group Sales at 312-977-1710 or emailing GroupSales@BroadwayInChicago.com. Challenges for Employers and Employees

caregiving responsibilities can significantly impact workplace efficiency, leading to decreased productivity, delays, and errors. Employees managing caregiving duties or experiencing cognitive symptoms often require more sick days or personal time off, resulting in increased absenteeism. Additionally, caregiving employees may leave the workforce altogether, forcing employers to bear the costs of turnover and recruitment while investing in hiring and training replacements. The departure of experienced employees due to cognitive decline or caregiving responsibilities also results in the loss of valuable institutional knowledge, skills, and expertise. Furthermore, employees affected by Alzheimer’s or caregiving-related stress may require additional healthcare support, driving up insurance and benefits costs for employers. By proactively addressing these challenges, such as implementing supportive policies and resources, employers can better support their workforce, reduce turnover expenses, and foster a healthier, more inclusive workplace.

The Importance of a Dementia-Friendly Workplace

Creating a dementia-friendly workplace benefits both employees and employers. A supportive workplace culture encourages employees to disclose cognitive concerns, fostering open communication and enabling timely interventions. Accommodations tailored to the needs of affected employees can preserve their ability to contribute meaningfully while ensuring team cohesion and productivity.

By addressing cognitive impairment proactively, companies can:

• Retain valuable employees with historical knowledge.

Recommendations for Employers

To create a more inclusive and supportive environment for employees living with cognitive impairment, employers can implement the following strategies:

1. Training and Awareness:

Provide training to human resources personnel and supervisors on the warning signs of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Educate staff on disability law, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), to ensure compliance and understanding.

2. Health and Wellness Initiatives:

Encourage employees to seek medical advice for early diagnosis and treatment.

Promote healthy habits and wellness programs to support overall cognitive health.

3. Accommodations and Flexibility:

Offer tailored accommodations, such as simplifying job responsibilities, providing flexible hours, or incorporating technology-based reminders. Create “buddy” systems or additional supervision to support employees in their roles.

Involve trusted family members, physicians, or care team members in discussions about work adjustments when appropriate.

4. Policy Development:

Ensure disability benefits and retirement options are clearly communicated to employees.

Evaluate accommodations regularly to determine their effectiveness and make necessary adjustments.

dance should be about removing boundaries, not reinforcing them. Support employees transitioning out of the workplace due to cognitive impairment with dignity and respect.

Addressing Caregiving Challenges

In addition to supporting employees with cognitive impairment, companies must also recognize the needs of caregivers in their workforce. According to recent statistics:

• 6 in 10 caregivers were employed in the past year, working an average of 35 hours per week while caregiving.

• 57% of employed caregivers had to adjust their work schedules, such as arriving late or leaving early.

• 18% of caregivers reduced their working hours, and 9% left the workforce entirely.

Given these realities, flexible work options and caregiver support programs are essential to help employees balance their professional and caregiving responsibilities.

Future Directions for Corporate America

Employers can play a pivotal role in promoting dementia-friendly workplaces and communities. Hosting workplace events that build camaraderie and combat social isolation, offering work-from-home options, and fostering trusted relationships with employees are all strategies to support a diverse and inclusive workforce.

On a broader scale, legislative changes are needed to protect employees who are terminated for performance reasons but later found to have dementia. Simplifying processes for executing and utilizing power of attorney documents can also reduce the burden on families.

Dementia and mild cognitive impairment are no longer issues confined to the home; they are increasingly visible in the workplace. By fostering awareness, compassion, and practical solutions, employers can create an environment where employees feel safe acknowledging health challenges. In doing so, companies not only support their workforce but also ensure long-term organizational success, resilience, and inclusivity. AUDITORIUM PHILMS CONCERT SERIES continues with Marvel Studio’s Black Panther live in concert

One night only Saturday, January 18 at 7:30 PM at The Auditorium

With special guests Black Panther comics writer Eve L. Ewing and Senegalese tama drummer and Black Panther co-composer Massamba Diop who joins the Chicago Philharmonic in performance

The Auditorium, Chicago’s landmark stage at 50 E. Ida B. Wells Drive, and the Chicago Philharmonic present the latest installment in its Auditorium Philms Concert Series, a multi-media experience presenting iconic films brought to life with scores performed in concert, with the landmark superhero movie Marvel Studio’s Black Panther. The blockbuster film will play while a full orchestra performs the thrilling score composed by Ludwig Göransson -one of the most lauded and prolific composers working in film today- with in-sync dialogue and sound effects from the original film. Senegalese tama or talking drum player Massamba Diop will join the orchestra for the performance. Diop assisted Göransson with composing the score for the film and is featured heavily in the original recording. The one night-only presentation takes place Saturday, January 18 at 7:30 PM at The Auditorium, 50 E Ida B Wells Dr. Tickets start at $49.00 and are available at auditoriumtheatre.org or by calling The Auditorium’s Ticket Service Center at 312.341.2300.

Starring the late Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, the 2018 Marvel Studios’ Black Panther quickly became a global sensation and cultural phenomenon, showing a new dimension of what superhero films could be. Steeped in the aesthetics of afro-futurism, Black Panther follows T’Challa, the prince of a technologically advanced but self-isolating African nation called Wakanda. In addition to the high-octane action scenes familiar to superhero movies, Black Panther was revolutionary in its social commentary typically absent from other action movies.

Composer Ludwig Göransson (who is known for his work as producer to Childish Gambino in addition to composing for tv and film including Oppenheimer, Tenet, and The Mandalorian) crafted the score to Black Panther in collaboration with Senegalese musicians Baba Maal and Massamba Diop. The Academy Award and Grammy Award winning movie score combines traditional Senegalese music, Western symphonic scoring, and 21st Century digital production techniques to parallel the film’s Afro-futurist themes and create a sound that feels both futuristic and ancient. In a particularly inspired collaboration between Göransson and Diop, the film hero T’Challa is represented by three notes on the talking drum that sound rhythmically similar to the name “T’Challa.” This theme is repeated throughout the film, first by the talking drum and then the entire orchestra and is transformed depending on the scene.

“The Auditorium Philms Concert Series has been an exciting edition to our season at The Auditorium.” said The Auditorium CEO Rich Regan. “We’re looking forward to kicking off the new year with a thrilling evening of cinema and music with the Chicago Philharmonic.”

“When the Chicago Philharmonic first performed Black Panther live in concert in 2022, it was an experience unlike any other.” added Chicago Philharmonic Executive Director Terell Johnson. “Audience members in the sold-out crowd- many of whom came dressed up as characters from the film- were treated to an electric performance from Massamba and the members of the orchestra and discovered new dimensions to the beloved film. We are thrilled to revisit this amazing work of 21st century orchestration and bring this stunning experience to a new audience.”

Tickets are also now available for the recently

announced 2025 season of The Auditorium Philms Concert Series. Launching on February 22, 2025, with the futuristic classic The Terminator performed live in its U.S. Premiere, the series continues with The Goonies in its 40th Anniversary year, April 26; Toy Story in its 30th Anniversary year, June 14; The Nightmare Before Christmas, October 25; and The Holiday, December 20.

Founded by musicians of the Lyric Opera Orchestra in 1989, The Chicago Philharmonic Society is on a mission to reimagine the orchestra concert experience. With nearly 200 musician members and a unique system of musician governance, the organization is one of the most versatile, innovative, and ambitious orchestras in the country.

Chicago Philharmonic proudly collaborates with the greatest artists of our time, in every genre. Past collaborations have included The Joffrey Ballet, English National Ballet, Kishi Bashi, Lady Gaga, Tony Bennett, Joshua Bell, Tank and the Bangas, William Basinski, the American Ballet Theatre, Ryan Speedo Green, and more.

In 2021, Crain’s Business Chicago 40 Under 40 awardee Terell Johnson joined the organization as Executive Director. Since then, the orchestra has become a force for innovation and inclusion in the city’s performing arts ecosystem with a series of increasingly high-profile events. 2024 brought the orchestra’s debut at Lollapalooza Chicago with Icelandic jazz/pop sensation Laufey as the first orchestra to ever perform at the famed festival; a highly anticipated return to Ravinia Festival with a World Premiere tribute to Whitney Houston and a concert with the Violent Femmes; and and the World Premiere tour of An Evening with Sleeping At Last culminating in a sold-out debut at Carnegie Hall. MAYOR BRANDON JOHNSON SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER TO ESTABLISH TRANSFEMICIDE WORKING GROUP

CHICAGO – Mayor Brandon Johnson signed Executive Order 2024-2, establishing a Transfemicide Working Group to develop comprehensive strategies addressing violence against transgender women in our city. This Working Group represents a vital step in the Johnson administration’s commitment to implementing community safety approaches that address root causes of violence and ensure Chicago is safe for all residents.

“As transgender women continue to experience violence in our city at disproportionate rates, my administration is committed to uplifting our trans community and ensuring their safety,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “With establishment of the Transfemicide Working Group, the City of Chicago commits to protect our trans community through direct partnership with the communities most impacted. The solutions we develop will come from collaboration with community advocates and leaders who deeply understand the need to grow a city where every resident can live authentically and safely.”

In our work to ensure collaborative governance, this Working Group is critical to establishing evidence-based solutions that address the crisis facing our trans neighbors. Chicago has become the deadliest city in the nation for Black trans women, a somber reality that demands immediate action. This Working Group will strengthen support for organizations that have long championed this work while developing comprehensive solutions to end this pattern of violence.

Executive Order 2024-2 tasks the Commissioner of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations in collaboration with the Chicago Police Department with convening a Working Group by February 28, 2025. This Working Group shall include interdepartmental representatives across the City to review and recommend city policies, procedures, training and directives to change outcomes within the BIPOC transgender and gender-diverse community.

“We are sincerely grateful to Mayor Johnson’s Administration for the commitment to establish the Transfemicide Working Group through an official Executive Order 2024-3. This is big step forward to ensure our city government understands the unique challenges facing our transgender neighbors in Chicago,” said 35th Ward Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa. “This Working Group will inform our preventative measures and our field response to an emergent need in our community. We look forward to supporting the working group and the important conversations with the LGBTQ community and stakeholders including our LGBTQ Advisory Council.”

Through the partnership of the Commissioner of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations, Chicago Police, Chicago Department, Department of Family and Support Services and Chicago Department of Public Health, the administration continues to strengthen its approach to community safety and engagement, focusing on protecting our most vulnerable communities.

Get Your House In Order

AND the BEAT GOES ON…

My focus in this column has primarily been directed to the actions families must take to preserve their wealth for the next generations, in accordance to Proverbs 13:22. However, I have recently observed problems that families suffer when their businesses do not have a structured plan to continue operating profitably. So, here are guidelines to help you to begin to structure a succession plan for your business.

1. What is your business worth?

2. Who do you want to manage or control your business if you or your top manager becomes disabled or dies?

3. Who do you want to benefit from the “value” of the business after you are gone?

Your answers to these questions will help your attorney to structure your living trust, will, and power of attorney, assuring that your wishes for distribution and/or retention of all your business assets are honored.

In addition to the legal instruments that your attorney will prepare, you may also consider contacting your insurance agent for “Keyman Insurance.” This is an insurance policy that can provide your business the money needed to help compensate for the loss of leadership or management if you or top management persons becomes disabled or die.

If you own a business, you have already planted a seed for your family to prosper. The things that I have suggested that you do to establish a succession plan are essential to assure that your seed continues to produce a harvest. “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.”, Proverbs 16:3. And the beat goes on…. Bye for now, Bren.

From Canvas to Screen: “Legends of the Highway” Wraps Filming, Spotlights Florida’s Pioneering Highwaymen Art Collective

VERO BEACH, Fla., PRNewswire -- Triple Hibiscus Productions and BR Films are proud to announce the completion of principal photography on Legends of the Highway. Filmed on location in Atlanta, Georgia, Florida’s Treasure Coast, and North Carolina this groundbreaking film, distributed by Maverick Entertainment, brings to life the untold story of the Florida Highwaymen, a group of 26 self-taught African American artists who redefined art and entrepreneurship in the segregated South.

Written and directed by Marquand Ragland and loosely based on actual historical events, Legends of the Highway unveils the inspiring journey of eight pioneering members of the Florida Highwaymen, as seen through the eyes of Mary Ann Carroll, the official First Lady of the Highwaymen. The story explores how these artists, guided by the

mentorship of renowned landscape painter A.E. Backus and led by visionaries Alfred Hair and Harold Newton, created a legacy of breathtaking landscape paintings that captured the beauty of Florida while challenging the racial barriers of the 1950s and ‘60s.

The film features an exceptional ensemble cast led by Julian Horton (Netflix’s Beauty in Black), Kelvin Hair (Respect, BET’s Ruthless), Johnell Young (Hulu’s Wu-Tang: An American Saga), Ashani Roberts (Average Joe, Sweetwater), and Daniel Augustin (Rap Sh!t, How I Met Your Father). Also featuring John Dixon, Alec Adams, Jizzixious Bishop, and Christopher Thomas. Legends of the Highway delves into the ingenuity and resilience of the Highwaymen, who sold their vivid depictions of Florida’s landscapes from the trunks of their cars along highways, circumventing a traditional art world that excluded them. Alongside Alfred Hair and Harold Newton, the film highlights the

contributions of Roy “R.A.” McClendon, James Gibson, Livingston “Castro” Roberts, George Buckner, Alphonso Moran, and Al Black. Together, they defied the odds to carve out their place in history and leave an indelible mark on American art.

A Collaborative Achievement

Produced by Triple Hibiscus Productions and BR Films, the project celebrates the determination, talent, and legacy of these artists. “In Legends of the Highway, I set out to create a world of beauty where my lens became the brush, the actors were the paint, and the world was our canvas. said Ragland. “Through this story, I wanted audiences to see the world as the Highwaymen did—full of vibrant colors, endless possibilities, and the resilience of those who dared to dream.”

The film captures the essence of Florida’s natural beauty, a hallmark of Highwaymen art. Executive Producer Kenny Holmes, Florida native and one of the driving forces behind the project with Paul Barattini, brings a personal connection to the story, rooted in his close ties to many of the original Highwaymen.

Coming Soon Legends of the Highway will be released through Maverick Entertainment. Stay tuned for updates, including the official trailer and release date.

USPTO reaches historic milestone of 100 Patent and Trademark Resource Centers in libraries across the country, U.S. territories

WASHINGTON D.C. – The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently announced the addition of Tuskegee University and the University of the Virgin Islands to the Patent and Trademark Resource Centers (PTRC) network, officially marking the historic milestone of 100 PTRCs in libraries across the country and U.S. territories. The addition of Tuskegee University and the University of the Virgin Islands are the sixth and seventh Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to be designated as PTRCs.

PTRCs play an instrumental role in advancing the innovation ecosystem by offering free assistance to current and aspiring inventors, innovators, and entrepreneurs in communities across America. PTRCs connect these creators with specialized librarians in person on issues related to patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets. Each year, PTRCs assist thousands of aspiring inventors, creators, and small business owners on their innovation journeys, providing online resources, research consultations, and workshops to share information on the importance of intellectual property (IP) while also tailoring their services to meet the needs of the community. Last year alone, PTRCs helped nearly 6,000 individuals through their programs.

Partnering with PTRC-designated libraries is one of the many ways the USPTO equitably facilitates intellectual property (IP) protection for all innovators and entrepreneurs, contributing to the success of their ventures and their communities. According to a 2020 research study, a startup’s first patent leads to a cumulative 16 additional employees and $10.6 million in additional sales over five years.

As part of its National Strategy for Inclusive Innovation and a 2023 letter-writing campaign to more than 600 libraries spearheaded by USPTO Director Kathi Vidal, libraries across the country were invited to consider becoming PTRCs to assist their local innovators, creators, and inventors in communities where invention and entrepreneurship can help drive local economies. Since Director Vidal’s letter-writing campaign launched, more than 15 libraries signed up to be designated as a PTRC, including six HBCUs. HBCUs have played a critical role in advancing intergenerational economic mobility for Black families and communities throughout generations. Additionally, HBCUs have been instrumental in fostering innovation and intellectual property development.

“A 20% increase in PTRCs across the country in over a year – including a seven-fold increase in the number

of PTRCs at HBCUs – is proof of the desire for more communities to experience the tremendous economic and societal impacts innovation and entrepreneurship can have, and the incredible benefit of PTRCs’ free assistance to current and aspiring creators,” said Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property

and Director of the USPTO. “We want to ensure that everyone knows about and has access to the free resources that are available right at their fingertips to help them grow and protect their business.”

“The Tuskegee University Library System is pleased to be designated as a Patent and Trademark Resource

Center,” said Juanita M. Roberts, Director of Library Services. We look forward to working with university and community members to locate and access search tools needed to retrieve patent and trademark information.”

To find a list of PTRCs by state, please visit the USPTO’s official PTRC locations page.

3 Things to Know About Digital Mortgage Tools

With

To help ensure you’re a savvy loan applicant, Freddie Mac is providing answers to some commonly asked questions about digital mortgage tools: Why do lenders use digital mortgage tools? Lenders have traditionally relied on printed documentation that requires them to manually review your application before deciding if you qualify for a loan, including for how much and on what terms. This can be a time-consuming process for both the homebuyer and the lender. Digital mortgage underwriting tools allow lenders to expedite the process by using electronic documents and automation to more efficiently evaluate your loan application. Freddie Mac research has found that these tools can decrease the loan origination timeline and may also save you money in closing costs. In addition, the digital tools mortgage lenders use may help you qualify for a loan if you have a limited credit profile by looking at factors such as your history of on-time rent payments or the amount of money coming into and out of your bank account each month. This helps demonstrate your ability to pay your mortgage each month.

What information will my lender ask for? Not only will the way you provide documentation change, but in some instances the information your lender evaluates will change as well. For instance, you may be asked to provide access to digital accounts, such as your bank account, instead of providing printed bank statements. By using digital tools, lenders can get a more detailed view of your finances, which helps them lend to you if you are a harder-to-underwrite buyer. Specific requirements may vary by lender — some

Take the Life-Saving Step of Testing for Radon

(StatePoint) Radon—an odorless, tasteless and colorless gas found in homes and buildings at high levels throughout the United States—is the second leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for about 21,000 deaths each year, and the leading cause of lung cancer among people who don’t smoke.

The American Lung Association is partnering with Protect Environmental to educate and empower communities nationwide to take action to prevent lung cancer this January, which is National Radon Action Month, and throughout the year. As part of the campaign, they are answering some frequently asked questions about radon: What is radon? Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas emitted from the ground. Uranium in soil and rocks breaks down to form radium. As radium decays, radioactive particles (radon gas) are released into the air.

Why is radon found in buildings? Radon gas enters buildings through cracks in walls, basements, floors, foundations, and potentially, through water used in showers and faucets, trapping it inside.

Why is radon harmful? Radon gas particles can be inhaled in your lungs, attacking cells with dangerous, cancer-causing radiation. Radon exposure has no immediate symptoms; however, the long-term threat of health problems, including lung cancer, is serious.

How is radon detected? The only way to know the radon level in your home and workplace is to

What if I’m not comfortable providing my information? Though your lender will have a more detailed look at your finances through a fully-digital process, keep in mind that digital documents often provide a higher level of security than printed documents. If you still prefer not to share digital access to your personal information, your lender should understand your concerns and be willing to work with you on an alternative solution. If not, you can find a different lender who is willing to accommodate a loan application process that is not digital. In either scenario, you should always take steps to ensure your personal information is protected and remain vigilant against potential fraud. You can help mitigate your risk of fraud and identity theft by researching lenders and working only with reputable companies that take steps to protect their customers’ information. Learn more about the mortgage application process with Freddie Mac’s step-bystep guides to homebuying and refinancing, which are available at myhome.freddiemac.com.

As the housing finance industry continues to modernize, you can expect a faster, easier home loan process. Staying knowledgeable about these new tools can ensure there are no surprises when

conduct a radon test. Dangerous radon levels have been found in every state, so every building should be regularly tested. Testing is the first step in reducing risk of radon-induced lung cancer and is recommended every two to five years, even if you have a mitigation system. The Lung Association and Protect Environmental are offering free radon test kits to homeowners in select communities across the United States. Visit Lung.org/protect-environmental to learn more and check your eligibility for receiving a test kit.

What should I do if I detect high radon levels? Radon gas is measured in picocuries per liter (pCi/L) of air. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends taking action to reduce radon if levels are 4.0 pCi/L or greater, and to consider similar actions when the radon level is between 2.0 and 4.0 pCi/L. If you discover high radon levels in your home, a radon mitigation system should be installed to reduce the amount of radon to a safer level. Just be sure you work with a professional who is certified in radon mitigation. Using unqualified professionals may lead to faulty installation, which can cause property damage and even increase indoor radon levels.

The American Lung Association’s campaign to raise awareness on the importance of radon testing is supported by Protect Environmental. For more information, visit Lung.org/protect-environmental.

“I’ve been to too many homes where no one knew to test for radon until someone in the home got the devastating diagnosis of lung cancer,” says Kyle Hoylman, chief executive officer of Protect Environmental. “Taking action to reduce radon through mitigation and regular testing is an investment in the lung health of everyone in the building and could be a lifesaving improvement.”
