GUZZARDI PASSES BILL TO RETURN STATE LAND TO PRAIRIE BAND

POTAWATOMI PEOPLE

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A state park recognized as the land and ancestral home of indigenous people will be returned to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation under legislation backed by state Rep. Will Guzzardi, D-Chicago, transferring the Shabbona Lake State Park to its rightful owners 175 years after it was taken.

“We are correcting a nearly 200-year-old injustice today by returning this land to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation,” Guzzardi said. “Forcibly ejecting the indigenous population from the state began generations of trauma still felt today. I am proud to join indigenous advocates and members of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation in committee and on the House floor to pass this bill. We’ve got a lot more work to do to correct the egregious wrongs of past generations, but sending this land back to its rightful inhabitants is one step closer to honoring and supporting the fight for indigenous rights and protections.”

Since 1829, treaties between the United States government and indigenous people have recognized nearly 1,300 acres of land surrounding Lake Shabbona in DeKalb County as the land of Chief Shab-eh-nay and his people, now known as the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. In 1849, the federal government sold the land in violation of the treaty, after members of the Band temporarily left to visit the reservation of other Potawatomi who had been forcibly relocated to Kansas. In 1969, the land became a state park.

The Guzzardi-backed Senate Bill 867 will return the park to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, who have worked for decades to reclaim their land. Under agreement with the Prairie Band, the lake will remain open for public recreation.

ANDRADE TO CHAMPION PUBLIC SAFETY, COST OF LIVING ISSUES IN NEW TERM IN ILLINOIS HOUSE

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Jaime Andrade, D-Chicago, returned to Springfield to be sworn in for a new term in the Illinois General Assembly on Wednesday and issued the following statement:

“With the start of a new General Assembly and New Year, we have the unique opportunity to reset and revitalize our commitments to the kitchen table issues facing every Illinoisan in every city, village and community across our state. Our class of colleagues features both returning members and many new, fresh faces who will surely help us craft thoughtful solutions to address record high grocery and rent bills, unattainable college education and a tight job market.

“My commitment to securing our streets from violent, vehicular and property crime remains unchanged and as firm as ever. We cannot allow carjacking, wrongful death and destruction of property from high-speed motorists and other crimes to go unaddressed. I’m proud of my work to tirelessly meet these issues with smart policies like banning high-tech carjacking tools and securing neighborhood schools and parks in high-speed intersections, and more.

“I plan to move legislation forward to better safeguard our construction workers in high speed highway work zones. Too many workers are killed in high-speed collisions, because we haven’t done enough to reduce speeds. This has to, and will, change.

“Public safety will not be secured without tackling the cost of living issues that everyone in Illinois faces. Last year’s budget included vital cost-saving measures that allowed us to get serious about property tax relief, return more dollars to people’s pockets and local governments. Continuing to serve my community in Springfield has been a great honor, and I look forward to getting back to work.”

Catholic Youth Organization Continues To Provide Safe Spaces For Sports

When she graduated from University of Illinois, her mentor asked if she would be interested in working at CYO. It was her dream job. She met some of her best friends through CYO sports, doing track and field or cheerleading.

“I love everything about CYO. We get to travel to all of these different schools and parishes and meet all of these different kids,” Williams said. She added that she loves what she does.

The Maryville CYO began in 1930 as a way to get young people off the streets and give them access to opportunities that would get them off the streets, with the hope they could turn their lives around. Maryville sponsors and directs CYO on behalf of the Archdiocese of Chicago. The program services about 3,000 young people ages 8 years old to 19 years old.

In June 2024, Maryville opened the Maryville Youth Center at 5022 W. Madison Ave.Having the center enables CYO to offer open gym all year round, in addition to offering its sports programs. The sports that are offered through CYO include basketball, track and field and cross country. Cheerleading is also offered, with Williams going to schools to do workshops and clinics. There is also a golf program which is run by a golf professional.

need. For high school students, the CYO basketball teams gives students who, for whatever reason, didn’t make their high school team, the opportunity to play and hone their skills. There are 28 CYO basketball teams that practice once a week.

Grade school students enroll in the sports programs through their schools, with the schools helping them out with what they

“I’m always interested in keeping kids out of trouble and off the streets. I think the more they are in the gym, the less they are in the streets,” Williams said.

Williams said that there are times when there are 75 young people at the Maryville Youth Center in the gym after school. Those students also get an opportunity to utilize the computers to complete their homework. She said a lot of the times, the students who attend the center just want to see a friendly face and have an adult to talk to.

Williams said that with the center, CYO will start to create leagues and teams for those students who come in for open gym, so they can do cheerleading and basketball, basketball or dance teams. There are coaches who are available to help them hone their skills.

Williams said that people can help support the work CYO is doing by donating money to Maryville. She said they are always looking for donors and donations.

“We need as much monetary support and community support as we can get,” Williams said. Those interested in donating to CYO and the Maryville Youth Center can visit www.maryvilleacademy.org and select nonrestricted funds for CYO or the Youth Center.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns to The Auditorium March 7-9

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, one of the world’s most popular dance companies, returns to The Auditorium, Chicago’s landmark stage at 50 E Ida B. Wells Drive, in four performances only, Friday-Sunday, March 7-9, as part of a coast-to-coast 2025 United States tour in a season celebrating the life and legacy of Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison (1943-2024). Led by Interim Artistic Director Matthew Rushing, the passionate spirit and extraordinary technique of Ailey’s dancers will be showcased in two exciting programs featuring a trio of Chicago premieres alongside compelling new productions and beloved Ailey Classics, including Alvin Ailey’s must-see signature masterpiece Revelations. Tickets start at $39 and are now available at auditoriumtheatre.org or by calling the Auditorium’s Ticket Service Center at 312-341-2300.

Chicago’s own Vernard J. Gilmore will celebrate his farewell hometown engagement with Ailey, taking his final bow after 28 seasons with the Company. Currently the longest tenured Company member, the Englewood native began his professional dance training at Curie Performing and Creative Arts High School before receiving a scholarship to The Ailey School, performing with Ailey II, and joining Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1997.

In addition to the inspiring finale of Revelations for all performances, the programs for the 2025 Chicago engagement of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater are as follows:

Friday, March 7 at 7:30pm & Sunday, March 9, at 3pm

· Grace (1999, Chicago Premiere of 25th anniversary production) Set to Duke Ellington’s classic “Come Sunday,” Peven Everett’s hit “Gabriel,” and the irresistible pulse of Fela Kuti’s Afro-Pop, Ronald K. Brown’s spellbinding work depicts individuals on a journey to the promised land, expanding from a single angel-like figure in white to the fireball intensity of 12 powerful dancers. Here, the secular and sacred meet in a tour-de-force connecting African and American dance.

· Finding Free (2024, Chicago Premiere) by former Company member Hope Boykin who returns to explore personal freedoms in this collaboration with pianist Matthew Whitaker who is composing an original score. This insightful work uses Boykin’s movement-language and Whitaker’s jazz- and

gospel-influenced music to examine the challenges and restrictions throughout life’s peaks and valleys that propel the journey forward.

*Friday only: Special Opening Night excerpt of Cry as a tribute to Ms. Jamison.

· Cry excerpt (1971) Alvin Ailey choreographed the solo ballet, Cry, as a birthday present for his mother; it went on to become an enduring work of American art. First danced by the legendary Judith Jamison, an excerpt of this powerful work dedicated to “all black women everywhere - especially our mothers” will be performed on the opening night program (Friday, March 7) as a tribute to Ms. Judith Jamison, the beloved Company dancer and Artistic Director Emerita who passed away in late 2024.

Saturday, March 8 at 1pm & 7:30pm

· Sacred Songs (2024, Chicago Premiere) by Matthew Rushing features music used in the original 1960 premiere of Alvin Ailey’s seminal Revelations but later omitted when the piece was edited into the current version that has captivated audiences for decades. Drawing inspiration from the roots of Mr. Ailey’s most venerated and consummate creation, this stirring new work will resurrect and reimagine those spirituals—with the collaboration of musical director Du’Bois A’Keen—as an offering to our present need for lamentation, faith, and joy.

· Treading (1979, Chicago Premiere of new production) by Elisa Monte is a sculptural, mesmerizing duet featuring fluid, intricate movements that combine with Steve Reich’s evocative music to create an aura of mystery and sensuality.

· Many Angels (2024, Chicago Premiere) by Lar Lubovitch in his first premiere for the Company, features the native Chicago choreographer’s renowned lush choreography and musicality set to Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. Many Angels is inspired by a question posed by 13th century theologian St. Thomas Aquinas, “How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?,” illustrating that some questions have no logical response but are understood as a question of faith.

The Maryville Youth Center, on the city’s West side, holds open gym where young people can play sports, engage in activities and use the computers to complete their homework.

Gov. Pritzker Announces $43 Million Federal Award to Illinois Department of Transportation

Funding via Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Rail Crossing Elimination Program will improve infrastructure for Southwest Chicago and suburbs

CHICAGO — Governor JB Pritzker announced the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) will receive $43 million in federal funding for the Chicago Region Environmental and Transportation Efficiency’s (CREATE) 65th & Harlem Avenue rail project. The project will create an overpass for travel over Belt Railway of Chicago’s (BRC) tracks via 65th street each day, improving efficiency for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians in Chicago and neighboring Bedford Park, Summit, and Garfield Ridge, as well as allowing faster travel for freight trains heading into and out of BRC’s Clearing yard.

“This sort of smart, people-focused infrastructure investment exemplifies the best in what federal/state funding partnerships can do—present a solution that will make the daily commutes of Chicagoans and their neighbors and the daily movement of freight more efficient, making everyone’s day a little easier,” said Governor

JB Pritzker. “I’m grateful to CREATE for identifying and supporting these projects, and to President Biden’s administration for making such substantial investments in our roads and bridges under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Federal dollars in partnership with IDOT have made a major impact on Chicago’s south side in recent years, from this project to the Red Line Expansion grant funding which was allocated this week as well.”

Nearly 10,000 vehicles and 200 buses travel through the 65th St crossing each day, and an additional 17,500 vehicles travel through the adjacent intersection on Harlem and 63rd St, many of whom are slowed or stopped due to train crossings. This project will eliminate daily to over 1,100 vehicles daily, giving Illinois drivers 644 hours of time back per day. This crossing, designated a “911 Critical Crossing,” will also have easier access for emergency vehicles needing to enter the area and will improve emergency response times throughout the area.

to deliver a total of 70 projects to improve the flow of goods, services and people over roads and rails throughout the region. The funding will rebuild track infrastructure, add tracks, fix or replace 14 aging bridges and viaducts as well as implement mobility improvements on surface streets in target areas. Through his historic Rebuild Illinois capital program, Governor Pritzker’s administration has made record investments in infrastructure, committing more than $1 billion in funding for the rail network, with $600 million supporting passenger rail and $450 million supporting the CREATE program since he took office in 2019.

BECOME AN ADVOCATE: HELP THE ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION DRIVE CHANGE

The Alzheimer’s Association is calling on passionate individuals to join its network of advocates and help make Alzheimer’s and other dementias a national priority. By sharing personal stories, contacting government officials, and engaging in flexible, impactful ways, advocates play a vital role in driving legislative action and improving the lives of millions affected by the disease.

Advocates Making a Difference

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Alzheimer’s Association advocates, critical legislation has been passed, and federal research funding has seen significant increases. However, the fight is far from over. The Alzheimer’s Association needs dedicated volunteers to help build on these successes and amplify the movement in Congress and state capitals across the nation.

In addition to the grade separation elevating 65th St over the BRC, the project will also include infrastructure improvements at area intersections, elevation of 65th St’s intersections with Harlem Ave (IL 43) and Old Harlem Ave; intersection improvements on IL 43 at 63rd St and 65th St, new multi-use path and sidewalk connections, and drainage and lighting improvements in the area. Cars will be able to cross rail tracks regardless of train passage, reducing vehicle delay and improving rail crossing safety numbers.

The $43 million grant will be supplemented by $25 million in federal National Highway Performance Program funds and $13 million in IDOT matching funds, as well as $4.3 million in matching funds from private partner railroads.

“Today’s funding is a major investment in Chicago’s future. This federal funding will help reduce vehicle delay due to gate-down time, improve railroad crossing safety, promote mobility and connectivity, and advance sustainability and resiliency within Chicago’s neighborhoods,” said Senator Dick Durbin. “I’m proud to have worked with Sen. Duckworth to help secure more than $800 million for CREATE Program projects and will continue to ensure that our state has the federal resources to improve and expand its infrastructure.”

“Bedford Park is one of the most important transportation hubs not only in Illinois, but in the United States,” said Rep. Sean Casten. “I’m proud to see this federal funding invested in the 6th Congressional District that will improve our local infrastructure, increase railroad crossing safety, reduce traffic congestion in the area, and reinforce the Chicago region’s essential role as a national transportation center.”

“Advocates are the heartbeat of our mission,” said Lionell Martin Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter. “Every letter written, phone call made, or personal story shared brings us one step closer to a future without Alzheimer’s.”

Flexible Ways to Get Involved

The Alzheimer’s Association welcomes advocates with all levels of availability and experience. Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or new to advocacy, there’s a way for you to make a difference:

• Share Your Story: Caregivers and those affected by Alzheimer’s can connect with elected officials to share their personal experiences and highlight the need for legislative support.

The CREATE program has been a key driver of federal funding to Chicago-area transportation projects. In October, Governor Pritzker and IDOT announced $290 million in grants for the 75th St Corridor Improvement Project, the largest piece of the CREATE program, a partnership between federal, state, and local partners, as well as the freight and passenger railroads,

“The Chicagoland region is home to one of the busiest freight rail hubs in our country, and the residents and stakeholders of the region know how critical freight rail is to our economy,” said Congressman Chuy García. “This investment will enhance railroad crossing safety, reduce traffic, improve supply chain efficiency, create jobs, and much more. As a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I am proud to have played a key role in securing these funds for my community.”

Alvin Ailey...Continued from page 2

Culminating each program will be Alvin Ailey’s must-see American masterpiece Revelations, acclaimed around the world for sending hearts soaring and lifting audiences to their feet with its perfect blend of reverent grace and spiritual elation. Since its debut in 1960, Revelations has been moving audiences with its powerful storytelling and soul-stirring music, evoking timeless themes of determination, hope, and transcendence. An intimate reflection of Mr. Ailey’s childhood memories of growing up in the South and attending services at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Texas, Revelations pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of the African American community and explores the emotional spectrum of the human condition.

• Write Letters to the Editor: With just a few minutes, you can draft a letter to your local newspaper, encouraging readers to contact their representatives.

Why Advocacy Matters

Advocates not only bring attention to the challenges of Alzheimer’s but also influence policymakers to act. Increased research funding, better caregiver support, and the development of new treatments depend on legislative action fueled by the voices of those who care deeply about the cause.

Ammons Shares Policy Accomplishments, Priorities Ahead

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Continuing her efforts to advancing equity-driven policies across Illinois, state Rep. Carol Ammons, D-Urbana, is outlining her priorities for the upcoming legislative session while reflecting on significant accomplishments from the past year, including over 30 new Ammons-backed laws that took effect on January 1, 2025.

“Last year, we made incredible strides to support our communities, from expanding assistance for low-income households to introducing tax credits that help families raising young children,” said Ammons. “These investments reflect the values of equity and opportunity that guide my work. But as we enter this new legislative session, I’m eager to tackle the challenges still facing our residents — especially the rising costs that are putting undue pressure on families. We need bold, transformative policies to deliver real relief.”

As chairwoman of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus and an integral member of several key com -

mittees, Ammons has spearheaded impactful legislation benefitting residents statewide. Notably last session, Ammons was instrumental in advancing birth equity protections for women of color and safeguarding reproductive rights, slashing healthcare costs for working families, and securing funding to combat homelessness.

With a focus on equity, inclusion, and transformative solutions, Ammons remains committed to ensuring that Illinois works for all its residents, especially those who have been left behind.

“I’m deeply honored to serve as a voice for the Urbana-Champaign community and for historically excluded communities across Illinois, particularly Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) populations,” said Ammons. “This year, I will continue prioritizing safe communities, equitable access to high-quality education, and expanding economic opportunities for every Illinoisan.”

Delgado Delivering Bold Solutions for Illinois’ Public Transit and Communities

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Representative Eva-Dina Delgado, D-Chicago, began her new term with a powerful call for action to address critical issues impacting Illinois residents. Taking the oath of office on Wednesday, Delgado pledged unwavering dedication to improving public transit, reducing cost of living, and ensuring affordable housing.

“In taking this oath, I reaffirm my commitment to the promises we made to our communities: creating tangible solutions for rising living costs, combating crime, and delivering a public transit system that truly works for every Illinoisan,” said Delgado.

Public transportation remains a cornerstone of Delgado’s legislative agenda. Drawing from insights gained during her recent visit to Germany, where she studied their world-class transit infrastructure, Delgado emphasized the urgent need for reform.

“Over the past year, I have not

only listened to the families and commuters who depend on our transit system but also sought innovative solutions globally,” Delgado stated. “Germany’s integrated, efficient transit model offers invaluable lessons. It is time we apply expert-driven strategies to modernize and unify our own fragmented system, restoring public trust in buses and trains.”

Delgado also outlined her vision for fostering community-driven approaches to crime reduction and economic relief. “Our solutions must be rooted in the lived experiences of those who face these challenges daily. Together, we can create safer, more affordable, and connected communities for future generations,” she added.

As the new legislative session begins, Delgado calls on her constituents to join her in shaping the future. “It is an honor to serve this incredible community. Your voices fuel my fight in Springfield. Together, we can build a stronger, more equitable Illinois.”

Walsh Lays Out Legislative Session Priorities

JOLIET, Ill. – Reducing costs for families and improving critical resources are among the top priorities this legislative session for state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., (D-Elwood), who will work toward propelling policy that alleviates everyday struggles, including his key sponsorship to remove the senior driving test requirement.

“This session, I’ll continue my focus on fueling growth and making our communities more livable,” said Walsh. “Rising costs in Illinois and across the country are making everyday life harder for our families. We must think ahead by prioritizing workable solutions that will pour more back into our communities — initiatives that focus on creating jobs, improving infrastructure,

and expanding services.”

“This session, I’ll continue my focus on fueling growth and making our communities more livable,” said Walsh.

During his tenure, Walsh has supported slashing costs and holding government spending accountable to ensure funding and resources to help those in need, especially working families and seniors living on fixed incomes. Last year, Walsh pushed for essential property tax relief for seniors and also led initiatives to expand affordable housing, improve critical resources for first responders, and protect workplace rights.

“Economic opportunity is the foundation of a thriving community. By making smart investments and working across the aisle, we can support working families and build a stronger future for everyone,” said Walsh.

Pay Yourself First

Get Your House In Order

“Pay yourself first!” is one of the first and the most important lessons to be learned from a financial advisor. Yet, it is not a lesson well known or followed in Black communities. Why? For decades too many of our Black families have lived a hand-to-mouth existence and experienced a long history of being overworked and underpaid. It is no surprise that many families in our communities have worked on jobs that have only had Social Security as a retirement option.

Scripture tells us in in Hosea 4:6, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” So, I am determined in this column to share my knowledge and information to help somebody. Then my living and this column will not have been in vain.

If you work on a job that does not offer a retirement plan, guess what? The State of Illinois may have a retirement savings plan for you. Illinois is one of twenty states that has enacted a Work and Save Program for its residents. It is called Illinois Secure Choice. It is an IRA (individual retirement account) operated by the state. For additional information call: 855-650-6913 (employers) 855-650-6914 (workers) or go to their website clientservices@ilsecurechoice.com You now have a way to pay yourself first through Illinois Secure Choice.

Bye for now, Bren.

FROM HOMELESSNESS TO HOLLYWOOD:

The Johnson Family’s Inspiring Journey of Faith, Unity, and Triumph

ATLANTA, PRNewswire

-- The Johnson family’s rise from homelessness to national acclaim is a testament to resilience, faith, and unity. Their documentary, Embracing the Dream, debuts January 26, on Amazon Prime Video, capturing their extraordinary journey of overcoming challenges and building a legacy in entertainment.

Dasha and Takela Johnson, founders of Fresh Oil Apostolic Center in 2002, stood firm in their faith despite homelessness, public judgment, and strained family relationships as they supported their sons’ creative aspirations. Their story demonstrates how love and perseverance can transform even the direst circumstances into platforms for greatness.

Their sacrifices fueled extraordinary success. Dontrell became an award-winning songwriter and singer, while Caleb flourished as a young entrepreneur. Aaron, who began his career at age 9, emerged as a visionary storyteller. By 13, Aaron was producing videos for Grammy-nominated artist Betty Wright, and by 18, he had secured a production deal with Wendy Williams Productions. At just 15, Aaron spoke in place of Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders

for the Diversity Conference in Vermont. At 17, he represented the United States at a major film festival in London, winning for his acclaimed feature LOST. That same year, Miami’s Mayor Francis Suarez and the City of Miami honored him with his own day and

a proclamation celebrating his achievements.

Aaron’s journey includes sharing stages with luminaries like the late Oscar winner Harry Belafonte, and he has earned numerous accolades, including the 365 Black Award, where he was honored alongside icons like Ava DuVernay and Marvin Sapp. A four-time author, Aaron’s story reflects a global impact, inspiring audiences with a message of perseverance and faith.

Embracing the Dream showcases the Johnson family’s incredible resilience and offers a behind-the-scenes look at how they turned obstacles into opportunities. Accompanying the documentary is their book, A Family Guide in Faith & Entertainment, now available on Amazon. The book provides insights into balancing faith and ambition while navigating life’s challenges.

“This story is for every dreamer,” Aaron shares. “It’s proof that faith, love, and unity can overcome anything.”

Embracing the Dream premieres Jan. 26, on Amazon Prime Video, celebrating the power of faith and family to inspire audiences worldwide.

Navigating Changes as a Family

(Family Features) Every family experiences changes. Some are planned, others are unexpected. Some are joyful, others are marked by pain or uncertainty.

Whether it’s divorce, the death of a loved one, welcoming a new sibling or moving to a new home, these events impact every member of the family. For young children, even small changes can feel monumental, and how adults talk with them affects how they respond and cope.

Dr. Lauren Loquasto, senior vice president and chief academic officer at The Goddard School, shares this guidance to help families navigate change.

Why Transitions Matter to Young Children

To understand why transitions affect children so deeply, it’s important to remember children see the world differently than adults. Their routines, relationships and surroundings establish a sense of security and safety. Their families and role within them form their initial identities. Any disruption, big or small, can shake their foundation. Children can handle change, but adults must help

them process it.

Children are naturally perceptive. When something changes, they notice. When they lack the language or understanding to ask questions, they express their feelings through behavior. It’s how young children express, “I’m feeling something, but I don’t have the words for it.”

When children become clingier after a new sibling is born or struggle with meltdowns in a

new classroom, they’re trying to process the changes in their lives. These behaviors signal, “I’m not sure what to do with all these feelings.”

View Changes Through Children’s Eyes

Everyone experiences changes differently. Even within the same family, adults and children may perceive and respond to the same event in unique ways. An adult may see moving to a new home as an exciting fresh start while children may see it as leaving behind the only bedroom they’ve ever known.

Approaching changes through a child’s lens helps reframe what’s happening. Instead of minimizing feelings, adults can acknowledge the shift children are experiencing and guide them with care.

Proactively Communicate

When families face big changes, one of the most common questions is, “What do we tell the kids?” There’s often a struggle between wanting to protect children from overwhelming emotions and offering them enough information to make sense of what’s going on.

The HBCU Executive Leadership Institute at Clark Atlanta University Announces Record-Breaking Number of 2025 Community of Fellows

“This sort of smart, people-focused infrastructure investment exemplifies the best in what federal/state funding partnerships can do—present a solution that will make the daily commutes of Chicagoans and their neighbors and the daily movement of freight more efficient, making everyone’s day a little easier,” said Governor JB Pritzker.

This project will eliminate daily to over 1,100 vehicles daily, giving Illinois drivers 644 hours of time back

per day. This crossing, designated a “911 Critical Crossing,” will also have easier access for emergency vehicles needing to enter the area and will improve emergency response times throughout the area.

The CREATE program has been a key driver of federal funding to Chicago-area transportation projects. In October, Governor Pritzker and IDOT announced $290 million in grants for the 75th St Corridor Improvement Project, the largest piece of the CREATE program, a partnership between federal, state, and local partners, as well as the freight and passenger railroads, to deliver a total of 70 projects to improve the flow of goods, services and people over roads and rails throughout the region. The funding will rebuild track infrastructure, add tracks, fix or replace 14 aging bridges and viaducts as well as implement mobility improvements on surface streets in target areas. Through his historic Rebuild Illinois capital program, Governor Pritzker’s administration

has made record investments in infrastructure, committing more than $1 billion in funding for the rail network, with $600 million supporting passenger rail and $450 million supporting the CREATE program since he took office in 2019.

As a senior member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I am proud to have played a key role in securing these funds for my community.”

prompting

an IRS official threatening some punitive action, claiming the victim committed a violation and needs to contact them to resolve the situation.

Filing support scams. Similar to tech support scams, criminals offer to help create IRS accounts to assist with the online filing process. Frequently posing as tax preparers, scammers will go through the motions of gathering the victim’s personal information for tax forms they never intend to file.

Social media scams. Social media serves as a great place for criminals to find potential victims and carry out tax scams, fraudulently claiming to offer different types of services or possessing unique knowledge or access.

Recovery scams. Once a victim is scammed, criminals will try to strike again –believing the victim is gullible. Exploiting a time of vulnerability, they’ll contact the victim with promises of helping them recover their losses and will leverage this as an opening to commit additional crimes.

While it is not always easy to pick out a scam, here are indicators to watch for:

• Promise of a big pay-out. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Request for your account information. The IRS will never ask for your credit or debit account information over the phone.

• Random contact. The IRS contacts taxpayers by mail first and will never contact via random phone calls or digital means. The IRS will not leave prerecorded, urgent, or threatening voicemails.

• Demands or threats. The IRS can’t revoke your driver’s license, business licenses or immigration status and cannot threaten to immediately bring in local law enforcement. Taxpayers are allowed an appeals process, so any message of “now or else” won’t come from an official channel.

• Request for you to click a weblink. Odd or misspelled web links can take you to harmful sites instead of IRS.gov.

The IRS recommends these best practices to protect against tax fraud:

• Get an early start. File early so criminals have less time to impersonate you.

• Set up a verified account. Set up your own IRS account before someone else can and use an Identity Protection PIN – a six-digit number known only to you and the IRS.

• Wait for written notice. Do not respond to any supposed communications from the IRS if you haven’t first received official notification through U.S. mail. If you get a call from someone claiming to be the IRS, hang up and call the official number on the website before engaging. Further, never click a link sent digitally as initial contact.

Apply good cyber hygiene. Do not use public Wi-Fi when filing your tax returns. Do use strong passwords, secured network connections and multi-factor authentication. Run all software updates and keep systems current.

If you fall victim to a tax scam, report it to the IRS. For more scam protection tips, visit PNC’s Security & Privacy Center at pnc.com.

One wrong click can cause tremendous damage that ends up earning bad guys a windfall. However, a little caution can go a long way in helping you avoid a costly tax scam.
