The Metropolitan Peace Academy now has a brick-and-mortar facility to hold its community violence intervention training. Metropolitan Peace Academy started in 2018 with eight community-based organizations that came together with the hope to reduce shootings and homicides in the city, as well as reclaiming safe spaces in neighborhoods. It also aimed to professionalize street outreach through the Metropolitan Peace Academy. The first cohort was 25 outreach workers who had lived experiences, and some were returning citizens. “We wanted to make sure we captured their expertise, but at the same time, provided another lift to the best practices and strategies and techniques on how they did their work,” said Dr. Vanessa DeReef the Chief Training Officer of Metropolitan Peace Academy. CHICAGO PUBLIC SCHOOLS AWARDED WITH 23 AP COMPUTER SCIENCE FEMALE DIVERSITY AWARDS

CHICAGO – Nearly two dozen Chicago Public Schools (CPS) high schools earned the 2023 College Board AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award for achieving high female representation in Advanced Placement computer science courses. The 2022-23 School Year also marked the fourth consecutive year that female and non-binary students comprised the majority of AP Computer Science Principles exam takers throughout the District. Schools honored with the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award maximized their commitment to computer science education by expanding girls’ access to AP computer science courses, specifically in AP Computer Science A (CSA) and AP Computer Science Principles (CSP). The following schools achieved either 50 percent or higher female representation in at least one of the two AP computer science courses, or the percentage of the female computer science exam takers met or exceeded that of the school’s female population during the 2022-23 school year: Alcott College Prep* Austin College & Career Academy High School* Chicago Academy High School* Chicago Mathematics and Science Academy Curie Metropolitan High School* DeVry Advantage Academy* Eric Solorio Academy High School* Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep Academy* Hubbard High School* Hyde Park Academy High School* Intrinsic Schools – Downtown Campus Jones College Prep High School* Lane Technical College Prep High School* Noble Street Charter School: Pritzker College Prep Northside College Preparatory High School* Perspectives Charter Schools: Calumet High School of Technology Perspectives Leadership Academy Phoenix STEM Military Academy* Thomas Kelly College Prep* Tilden Career Community Academy* Von Steuben Metropolitan Science Center* Walter Payton College Prep High School* World Language High School at Little Village Lawndale* *District-run schools are denoted with an asterisk. Giannoulias, Preston, Stava-Murray Move to Ban Harmful Food Chemicals In a push to ensure that Illinoisans eat safer, healthier food, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, State Senator Willie Preston (D-Chicago) and State Representative Anne Stava-Murray (D-Downers Grove) have initiated legislation to ban harmful chemicals in candy, soda and other ultra-processed, packaged foods sold here. The Illinois Food Safety Act – or Senate Bill 2637 – calls for prohibiting the use of brominated vegetable oil, potassium bromate, propylparaben, Red Dye No. 3 and titanium dioxide – all of which have been linked to serious health problems, including hyperactivity, nervous system damage, reproductive issues, hormonal damage and increased risk of cancer. Because of health concerns, the use of these chemicals in food items is already prohibited in the European Union and several other countries. Last fall, California enacted a law that banned four of the five additives, which takes effect in 2027, and New York is considering similar legislation. “Our goal with this legislation is to create a healthier marketplace for Illinois families,” Giannoulias said. “The purpose of this legislation isn’t to ban any products or take food off shelves; it’s to ensure food manufacturers update recipes to use alternative, safer ingredients that are already used in other places around the world, including soon in other parts of the U.S.” “People should be able to trust that the food they buy won’t lead to deadly diseases such as cancer. That’s why I’ve drafted and proposed SB2637 to ban Red Dye #3, Brominated Vegetable Oil, Potassium Bromate, Propylparaben, and Titanium Dioxide,” Preston said. “I want Illinoisans to be more confident when grocery shopping that they are not purchasing products that are laced with ingredients classified as toxic and harmful for human consumption. The European Union and California have already banned these harmful ingredients. Illinois must take the steps necessary to protect the health and wellness of our citizens.” “Illinois families should not have to worry that the food they buy for themselves and their kids may contain harmful substances that can cause neurological and reproductive symptoms, or even cancer,” Stava-Murray said. “When new scientific data casts doubt on whether an ingredient or additive is safe to consume, it’s im-

portant that that substance be removed from the food supply.” The advocates emphasized the law is aimed at protecting children, who are more likely to consume food products that contain these chemicals. Children are also at a greater risk to suffer the negative impacts from food additives because their developing organs are more vulnerable. As Secretary of State, Giannoulias oversees the state’s organ donation registry and stressed the importance of healthy organs for individuals suffering from life-threatening diseases or injuries who need transplants. In addition, the Illinois legislation calls on an Illinois-based university or research-focused institution to study the health risks associated with two other additives – butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), which would be subject to additional regulations if it is determined they pose a significant health risk. Additional support for SB 2637: “In keeping with our commitment to reducing the number of people waiting for a lifesaving transplant, we support the Illinois Food Safety Act,” said Kevin Lee, President and CEO of Mid-America Transplant. “Efforts to make food healthier enhance overall wellbeing and help prevent individuals from needing a transplant later in life. We believe this legislation will promote healthy lifestyles and reduce diseases that can lead to the need for transplant.” “The Food Safety Act protects the most vulnerable Illinoisans, particularly our children whose organs are still developing,” said Marion L. Shuck, Executive Vice President of Governmental and External Affairs at Gift of Hope Organ and Tissue Donor Network. “I urge our legislators to approve this proposal, which will keep our communities healthier and less frequently in need of live-saving transplants.” “The FDA has failed for decades to keep us safe from toxic food chemicals,” said Scott Faber, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit, non-partisan organization that empowers people to live healthier lives in a healthier environment. “In the absence of federal regulation, it falls to the states to keep us safe from toxic chemicals in

Gov. Pritzker Marks Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Decision with Chicago Abortion Fund Roundtable CHICAGO— Governor JB Pritzker joined the Chicago Abortion Fund on Monday, Jan. 22, to commemorate 51 years since the landmark “Roe v. Wade” Supreme Court Decision. Joining Governor Pritzker at the roundtable were CAF leaders, healthcare providers, and advocates for abortion services. The event highlighted the work providers are doing to keep abortion accessible, as well as the healthcare impacts in states where reproductive rights are in jeopardy since the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. “Here in the Land of Lincoln, we respect women. And we will give them their privacy, their autonomy, and their freedom,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “On the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, I am here to say that Illinois will remain a safe haven for women from all corners of the nation. I will continue to do everything in my power to expand access to reproductive healthcare and protect patients and providers alike — because like you, I know that abortion access is healthcare.” “Instead of celebrating national progress, women are again fighting for the right to govern their bodies. ELIZABETH “LIZZIE G” ELIE LICENSED REALTOR

is a stark reminder of what our daughters have lost, but we will never stop fighting to restore the light of freedom,” said Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton. “Illinois remains a safe haven for reproductive care, and we are committed to standing on the right side of history. We trust women.” The discussion focused on the statewide and national atmosphere since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, and the impact on abortion access and reproductive healthcare. Advocates emphasized Illinois’ status as a safe haven for reproductive rights in the Midwest, with many surrounding states restricting abortion access. The discussion emphasized the increased need for reproductive healthcare resources, education, and legislation across the United States, and the strides made by Illinois to protect abortion rights in a “postRoe world.” Though the national discourse shifted after the Dobbs decision, reproductive healthcare access has been a priority of the Pritzker administration since day one. Since taking office, Governor Pritzker has worked with the Illinois Legislature to: Pass the Reproductive Health Act ensuring autonomy in utilizing contraception, abortion, and maternity care, Repeal parental notification laws, Guarantee legal protections for providers who care for out-of-state patients, Increase insurance coverage for reproductive healthcare needs, And establish a Reproductive Health Public Navigation hotline to assist patients with locating healthcare, transportation, housing, and financial support. “At the University of Chicago, we are proud of the compassionate patient-centered and evidence-based care that we are able to provide to our patients, especially considering the current legal landscape,” said Dr. Neha Bhardwaj, Assistant Professor, Section of Family Planning, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Chicago. “In the face of these increased barriers to abortion care, we are so grateful to be a part of a strong coalition of Illinois sexual health providers, with a Governor that is committed to our efforts and the preservation of bodily autonomy, and at a University that supports and encourages comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care.” “On the 51st anniversary of Roe, people nationwide are experiencing more barriers to abortion than ever,” said Dr. Laura Laursen, Rush Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, CARLA Co-Director. “Access to this essential healthcare is inequitable and based on geography, income, and race. Illinois has been an innovative leader working to alleviate these disparities. Programs

like the Complex Abortion Regional Line for Access ensure all patients who need abortions are comprehensively cared for in Illinois with emotional, logistical, financial, and medical support.” “The Chicago Abortion Fund (CAF) provides financial, logistical, and emotional support for people seeking abortion care in Chicago, Illinois, and around the Midwest,” said Megan Jeyifo, Executive Director, Chicago Abortion Fund. “In the wake of the Dobbs decision, we experienced a staggering 92% increase in support requests from individuals spanning over 40 states, underscoring the pivotal role Illinois plays in the post-Roe landscape. The surge in demand underscores not just the barriers to abortion care but the extraordinary lengths people are forced to go in this new era. Navigating legal restrictions, logistical hurdles, misinformation, and financial obstacles, our callers and those seeking abortion care are facing a maze of complexities. The Chicago Abortion Fund remains unwavering in its dedication to assisting every caller, transcending the limitations set by Roe v. Wade. While we commemorate Roe today, our vision goes well beyond it, to a future where everyone, regardless of who they are, where they are from, or how much money they have can access compassionate abortion care in their own community. We must continue to fight for a future where this care is not just legal, but accessible to all, and provided with dignity and affirmation.” “CSSBC understands that the need for abortion care and access is not isolated from the need for culturally competent, safe, and accessible maternal health care,” said Jeanine Valrie Logan, Certified Nurse, Midwife, and Birth Justice Activist, Founder of the Chicago South Side Birth Center (CSSBC) Initiative. “These two issues are the same issue and limiting and/or denying access to abortion care will continue to exacerbate the devastating outcomes for birthing people; especially birthing people of color.” “In Illinois we know just how important it is to elect leaders that believe that abortion is healthcare, and treat it as such in their public policy decisions,” said Sarah Garza-Resnik, Personal PAC CEO. “Since the fall of Roe, our governor and General Assembly have taken the incredibly necessary steps to ensure that Illinois remains a safe haven for abortion care and reproductive rights. We at Personal PAC are proud to work alongside our elected leaders like Governor Pritzker and partners like Chicago Abortion Fund to ensure that Illinois is the leading example, and that we push even beyond the protections of Roe to ensure that abortion care is accessible to all who need it.”

Giannoulias, Preston...Continued from page 2 cereals, salad dressings, candy and other foods our families enjoy. We applaud the Secretary and Illinois lawmakers seeking to remove these additives from Illinois’ food supply.” The foods that our children consume starting from birth have a significant impact on their development and future health,” said Dr. Payal Adhikari, a pediatrician and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP) at Northwestern Children’s Practice, which specializes in healthy lifestyles. “We are excited to have

leaders who take initiative to make sure the safest options are available to our community.” “The Illinois Academy of PAs is committed to improving the health of Illinoisans by increasing access to health care and promoting healthier options for diet and lifestyle,” said Timothy Kinsey, DMSc, PA-C, President of the Illinois Academy of Physician Assistants. “We strongly support the Secretary of State, Sen. Preston and Rep. Stava-Murray’s efforts to improve nutrition for Illinois residents.”

FRIENDS OF THE PARKS ANNOUNCES INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Friends of the Parks’ interim executive director is a bicycle activist, transportation planner, educator, mental health advocate and proud product of the Chicago Public Schools. Chicago’s parks also have played important roles in all chapters of Gin Kilgore’s life—from cutting through Nichols Park on the way to high school, to getting married in Humboldt Park, to building sandcastles with her child at North Avenue Beach and training for the marathon by running along Daniel Burnham’s “emerald necklace” of boulevards. All of the assets Kilgore believes will serve her well as she steps into this new position at the venerable organization known for protecting Chicago’s lakefront, advocating for equity across the Chicago Park District and fighting for environmental justice. Kilgore was hired at FOTP in 2022 as deputy director. Since being at the organization, the former Hyde Park resident says she has learned a lot about “grass tops” advocacy. She came to the position thinking she would draw most heavily on her grassroots and policy backgrounds, but quickly discovered that the listening and facilitation skills gained from her time in classrooms have been equally valuable. “We can’t do ground level work in each of the over 600 parks across Chicago. Instead, we support and amplify the efforts of local “parktivists”—Park Advisory Councils and other stakeholders. The trends we see from across the city then guide our advocacy work at the policy level. Kilgore also appreciates the way FOTP holds space for complex, often messy conversations “When I first read about our Parks as Democracy? conferences, the English teacher in me raised an eyebrow. I now think our public discourse would greatly benefit if people used more question marks than exclamation points.” Before working at FOTP, Kilgore was a bicycle/pedestrian planner at the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and program director at Ride Illinois. She co-founded Bike Winter to show that cycling is a year-round form of transportation and was instrumental in the development of the Bloomingdale Trail, which was renamed the 606 Trail. She also served on the board of Break the Gridlock, an organization that was dedicated to reducing automobile dependence. When wearing her educator hat, Kilgore was a lead literacy teacher at a Chicago public elementary school, where she served on the Local School Counsel during a principal transition, served as LSC president at her child’s elementary school, and taught composition at Malcolm X College. “We’re happy to have Gin step into this new role. In addition to working with communities to protect our parks and ensure Chicagoans of all ages have access, equitable programming and funding, we continue to work on our signature projects, Nature Along the Lake and Earth Day. FOTP will play an active role in the Chicago Park District’s strategic planning process this year and we are looking forward to celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2025 with park lovers across the city,” says FOTP Board Chair Bronwyn Nichols Lodato.

BELT ANNOUNCES AVAILABLE FUNDING FOR GROCERY STORE EQUIPMENT UPGRADES

State Senator Christopher Belt is encouraging local grocers to apply for funding through the Illinois Grocery Initiative for the purchase of updated energy-efficient equipment. “There are many factors that play a part in operating a successful grocery store,” said Belt (D-Swansea). “Through the Equipment Upgrades Grant Program, our local grocery stores have the opportunity to receive funding to aid in purchasing necessary, updated equipment.” Rising energy costs lead to outdated equipment, which presents a major expense for small community grocers. Under the Equipment Upgrades Program, eligible grocers can apply for grants to upgrade heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment; refrigeration units and freezers; lighting systems; and other systems providing significant energy savings. Eligible grocers should apply online by March 25. In order to support the businesses most in-need, grocers must be independently-owned with fewer than 500 employees and no more than four grocery stores. Grocery stores located in food deserts as defined by the USDA map will be given priority. The Equipment Upgrades Program is the first program to be rolled out as a part of the Illinois Grocery Initiative’s efforts to address food insecurity by supporting local grocers and reducing food deserts. “We need to consider all that goes into functioning grocers and provide them with help in any way we can,” said Belt. “Upgrading store equipment is a step in the right direction to ensuring we have accessible grocers to help combat food insecurity.” The Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity will hold webinars to assist applicants on Jan. 31 at 10 a.m. and Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. Learn more about the Illinois Grocery Initiative here.

Nathan Cummings Foundation Opens Grant and PRI Opportunity for Racial, Economic, Environmental Justice NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- The Nathan Cummings Foundation (NCF) announced today that it is accepting proposals for grants and program-related investments (PRIs). This grant and PRI opportunity flows from the foundation’s strategic plan to activate the totality of its assets to support organizations driving people-centric impact outcomes toward racial, economic, and environmental justice (REEJ). “We are excited to have an open line for values-aligned organizations and innovators to reach us,” said NCF President and CEO Rey Ramsey. “They hold the keys to how we advance impact solutions. We will listen and learn from them.” The foundation has an approximately $17 million grantmaking budget for 2024 and will offer three new types of grants: Venture Grants: (up to $100K): These grants are shortterm and designed to provide expedited support to social entrepreneurs with breakthrough and innovative solutions. Advancement Grants: (up to $250K) These grants are designed to provide two-year support to project-based work and/or help scale organizations and promising solutions. Enterprise Grants: ($250k+) These grants are designed to provide multi-year, unrestricted funding to partners that have deep alignment across our REEJ focus areas and offer the most opportunity to use all our financial and nonfinancial resources to support their solutions. The PRI initiative is backed by the board’s recent decision to dedicate five percent ($22 million) of the foundation’s endowment in the coming years to provide low-interest loans and other forms of low-cost financing to organizations focused on REEJ. The foundations budget for the initiative’s first year is targeted at approximately $3 million. The deadline for submissions is April 30, 2024. NCF encourages applicants to review the “Apply for Funding” section of its website for guidance. For additional information about this announcement, please contact NCF’s Director of Communications Candice Wynter, at Candice. Wynter@nathancummings.org. Honor Rosa Parks, Not Through Words, but Action BY BAKARI HEIGHT

F

ebruary 4 is Rosa Parks’ birthday. It is also Transit Equity Day. These days are tied together because Rosa Parks is an iconic figure among many of the civil rights era who chose the tactic of refusing to give up her seat on the bus. And transit advocates, like myself, want to make the connection to this act of resistance to highlight the rights of all people to high-quality public transportation powered by clean and renewable energy and organized labor. But for far too long, policymakers BAKARI HEIGHT in Washington have prioritized highways and cars over public transit. This has devastating impacts not only for the climate crisis but on the budgets of local transit agencies and communities across the nation. A new piece of legislation introduced last month by Congressman Hank Johnson from the Atlanta area would change that. The bill titled, “Stronger Communities through Better Transit Act” will provide high-quality transit to communities across the country. The fact of the matter is the COVID pandemic and recovery forever changed how our communities function, work, socialize, and commute. It also dramatically showed that public transit is essential to our communities, local economies, and the lives of millions of people across the country. Essential workers depend on and operate transit, small businesses depend on transit, and historically marginalized communities depend on transit. Transit is a key component of economic recovery and a more environmentally sustainable society, and it’s a road to equity for disconnected communities—rural, urban, and suburban. The recently introduced legislation would create a new formula grant program available to all transit agencies to increase service frequency and dependability so that people don’t have to wait so long for the bus, to provide additional hours of service so that those who don’t work white-collar hours can still get to their jobs; and to add new, frequent service to underserved communities. For decades, the federal government has supported the cost of operating aviation through air traffic control and the cost of shipping through investment in ports and the management of locks and dams in the inland waterways. These are essential services for the movement of goods and people. Operating high-quality transit is just as essential to get people to employment and to give businesses access to talent and customers. And it is time for Washington to treat it as such. While Congress has taken vital steps in recent years to fund transit capital projects like the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the fact of the matter is that the lack of congressional action on operations funding, which this latest bill would provide, has led to critical funding shortfalls at numerous transit agencies and has left many in fiscal trouble.

This new legislation will help fix that.

The truth of the matter is that in communities throughout the country transit is a driver of economic growth, jobs, and opportunity for many residents. Nationally, tens of millions of people in the U.S.—from small rural towns to major urban centers—rely on public transit to get to work every day, generating trillions of dollars in economic activity. Every dollar

invested in transit offers a 5-to-1 return, and every $1 billion invested in public transit produces 50,000 jobs. Transit agencies are often among the largest employers in their cities. We also know the climate crisis is not coming; it is here now. And it’s getting worse by the day. We’ve seen it all around us on a near daily basis. It is impacting our economy and nearly every aspect of our daily lives. Investing in public transit is one of the top ways we can help address the climate crisis on the scale that is needed. In other words, an investment in transit by policymakers would be a win-win. A win economically and a win in our efforts to address the climate crisis. And it is far past time for Washington to ensure that public transit does not just recover from COVID but expands to create more-sustainable and -prosperous communities. We need to honor Rosa Parks not just through words, but through action. And that is what this bill will do.

Great Lakes Credit Union and Encurage Financial Network Credit Union Jointly Announce Intent to Merge Chicago, Ill. – Great Lakes Credit Union (GLCU) and encurage financial network credit union (encurage) are excited to announce their plans to merge pending regulatory approval and an encurage membership vote. If approved, the combined organization will operate under the unified brand name, Great Lakes Credit Union. The credit unions are targeting a close later this year as a legal effective date for the merger. Both boards have voted in favor of the combined merger. Early in 2023, First Financial Credit Union launched the encurage brand as a cooperative effort of four formerly independent credit unions (S & C Electric Employees CU, Win-Hood Co-Op CU, C & NW Proviso CU, First Financial CU) aimed at helping their members to keep their local legacy while providing each credit union with the tools to improve operations, maximize resources, and enhance member services by pooling and sharing knowledge. In today’s highly competitive and rapidly changing financial marketplace, it is becoming increasingly challenging to offer the wide range of products and services that members want. Attracting new members and new employees in this competitive market is also becoming increasingly difficult. By merging with Great Lakes Credit Union, encurage will be able to leverage even more resources and benefits in the form of additional products and services, new and robust technologies, an increased branch network, financial education/counseling services, and position its credit unions for continued growth. Both credit unions wanted to find a partner that matched their own passions, shared similar bonds, policy guidelines, and an overall philosophy that aligned closely with their own missions, as well as a shared dedication and loyalty to their teams, members, and communities. “When we announced the formation of encurage in early 2023, we also indicated that it was the first step of many to enhance services and benefits for our members. By joining with Great Lakes Credit Union, we will take collaboration and innovation to an even higher level,” says Michael Abraham, CEO of encurage. Upon closing, Abraham will become the Chief Strategy Officer of Great Lakes Credit Union. Abraham continues, “Since its launch, encurage has provided a wide range of services to its credit union network and, with this merger, we will find many more ways to create an even richer experience for our members and our communities.” Steve Bugg, President and CEO of Great Lakes Credit Union says, “GLCU chose encurage as a merger partner because they are committed, as are we, to member focus, leadership, community involvement, and a vision for the future. We share a mutual dedication to our members, employees, and communities. Great Lakes Credit Union welcomes the entire encurage financial network of credit unions to our organization and look forward to continuing the legacy and success these credit unions have become known for. Our intent is to ensure these partner credit unions continue their unique identity that is tied back to their originating sponsors. In doing so, we are committed in keeping their voices heard under the advisory councils to ensure we remain close to our members and communities.” As member-owned cooperatives, and under the guidelines of the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), full merger approval is contingent upon membership approval, along with regulatory approvals from the NCUA and Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation. As the merger process moves forward, both credit unions will provide information to their respective memberships via their websites (www.glcu.org and www.firstfcu.org/encurage) and through other applicable communication channels. Upon completion of the merger, encurage financial network will bring over more than 14,000 members, mostly in the greater Chicagoland area, and over $200 million in assets to the new organization to combine with GLCU’s 80,000 members and $1.3 billion in assets. The combined entity will serve 94,000 members and hold approximately $1.5 billion in assets. Founded in 1938 and headquartered in Northern Illinois, Great Lakes Credit Union is banking for a greater good. As a not-for-profit financial cooperative with over $1.3 billion in assets, GLCU is proud to serve 80,000 members in Chicagoland and surrounding areas, and to give back to its members and communities through education, volunteerism, and partnerships. Learn more about GLCU’s accounts, educational initiatives, and community development programs at www.glcu.org. encurage financial network credit union was formed in 2023 to provide collaborative solutions for the members of four small asset-size credit unions with legacies extending back as far as 1936. encurage has steadily expanded and grown, serving over 14,000 members and holding over $220 million in assets.

Mental health and confidence -

priorities for the girls of Generation Z NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- In a time when Gen Z has become the focal point for numerous brands, there is a prevalent assumption that we understand how these young individuals think and what matters most to them. Gen Z is driven by purpose and world change. They are socially conscious and aim for success. As an intimate health brand, INTIMINA wanted to find out more about what young girls and women need and want in the complex tapestry of their lives - and has asked them directly. The results gave us a peek into the perspectives of young women belonging to Gen Z (13-20 years old), showing us what’s important to them and their aspirations and providing valuable insights that might assist parents in better understanding and supporting their daughters. INTIMINA’s survey conducted on 2,003 girls aged 1320 in the UK, Italy, France and Spain, shows that the most important aspects of life for Gen Z girls are confidence (63%) and mental health (62%), followed by body image (47%) and successful career (45%). Mental health takes center stage for Gen Z girls, highlighting its significance in shaping their well-being and life experiences. For the surveyed girls, the best way of maintaining positive mental health is by talking to friends (60%), talking to family (51%), physical exercise (47%), and creative activities (art, writing etc.) (31%), seeking professional help when needed (22%) and talking to teachers, school counselors or mentors (14%).

Gen Z girls know they need many things to feel good about themselves. Whether it’s a confidence boost or embracing a positive body image, they’re looking for different sources to help them out. Mostly, they turn to friends (54%) and parents or family members (46%). Many find confidence in their personal achievements (38%) and positive affirmations (32%). Still, social media (26%) and role models (16%) play a significant role in helping girls feel confident and positive about their bodies, influencing how they perceive themselves in today’s interconnected world. Periods are a normal part of life, but there’s still a lot of hush-hush around them. For Gen Z girls, it’s essential to chat about how they feel talking about periods and break those taboos. INTIMINA’s survey shows that there is a general openness towards this topic for young women, and 22% of respondents say menstruation is openly discussed, and they feel comfortable talking about it with everyone. 19% say that sometimes it’s openly discussed, while other times, it’s considered taboo. Many respondents (19%) appreciate the openness about menstruation in their social circles and feel at ease discussing it. Still, 11% feel menstruation is a private matter and should be discussed discreetly, while 11% think there is room for improvement in breaking the taboo around menstruation. Only 6% say menstruation is still seen as a taboo in their circles, and open discussions are limited. Intimina’s survey also shows what kinds of content or

support girls find helpful in dealing with their current needs and concerns. 51% turn to conversations with family and friends, and 33% find support in personal stories and experiences others share. 31% use educational resources such as books, articles, short videos, or webinars. 27% use access to mental health resources and tools. 19% choose interactive workshops or events focused on well-being and self-development and 19% visit online forums and communities for open discussions. In conclusion, it is reassuring and comforting, especially for parents, to witness the awareness among young women regarding the significance of a positive attitude towards themselves, their bodies, and good mental health. This heightened self-awareness is a promising foundation for their growth into happy and confident individuals. Encouraging open discussions within families about the mental and physical changes that girls and young women undergo is crucial for maintaining mental health. Equally important are conversations with partners and fostering an environment that promotes communication. Furthermore, incorporating physical exercise and a healthy lifestyle is key to nurturing overall well-being. As we collectively embrace these principles, we contribute to a future where young women flourish with resilience, confidence, and a genuine sense of well-being. Censuswide conducted the research on behalf of Intimina with 2,003 girls, aged 13-20 in the UK, Italy, France and Spain in January 2024. Established in 2009, Intimina is Swedish brand complete line of products for women’s intimate well-being. With three care ranges - Menstrual Care, Pelvic Floor Strengthening, and Feminine Wellness - Intimina has products for women of all ages. Susan G. Komen® Pushing for Public Policies to Eliminate Disparities in Breast Care Access WASHINGTON, PRNewswire -- Susan G. Komen®, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, is committed to making health care more affordable and accessible to all, by passing state and federal legislation in 2024 to remove barriers that prevent people from receiving the timely and high-quality breast care they need. Breast cancer outcomes are still influenced by a person’s race, income and where they live, but they should not be. Black women are 40% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women – due to delays in care or genetic factors that make them more likely to have an aggressive and deadly type of breast cancer. Public policies that remove obstacles, such as the cost of care and when and where care is available, would make an immediate difference in mortality rates. In fact, about one-third of breast cancer deaths could be prevented if everyone received the high-quality care that exists today. Fortunately, legislation has already been introduced or will be introduced this year that removes barriers to care and gets us closer to achieving health equity. Susan G. Komen’s Center for Public Policy is committed to working alongside policymakers from both parties in states and in Washington, DC to enact new policies that make breast imaging and follow-up testing more available and affordable, make needed benefits and treatment available to people with advanced breast cancer and help us detect genetic risk factors earlier, when actions can be taken to hopefully save lives. Breast imaging, the most effective tool at detecting breast cancers, is available to most people yet is not accessible to all. At the federal level, the SCREENS For Cancer Act would support state and local programs that provide

no-cost breast and cervical examinations for people who are uninsured or underinsured through the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP). Since the program’s inception in 1991, the NBCCEDP has served more than 6.1 million people, detecting nearly 77,000 invasive breast cancers. The legislation is needed to expand access in under-resourced communities, where access to screening and diagnosis remains a key barrier. Diagnostic and supplemental breast imaging, a critical step when a screening mammogram detects an abnormality or for those considered to be at high-risk for breast cancer, is often inaccessible or unaffordable. These tests can range from hundreds-to-thousands of dollars, out of pocket, and people often forgo them due to cost. States and the federal government must pass legislation to eliminate out-of-pocket costs for everyone. Already in the 2024 legislative session, 11 states are considering legislation to eliminate the patient cost of this needed imaging, and more states are expected to introduce bills in the coming weeks. Twenty states have already enacted legislation. Federal action must also be taken, and the Access to Breast Cancer Diagnosis Act is pending and supported by lawmakers in both parties in the U.S. House and Senate. Metastatic breast cancer (MBC) affects more than 168,000 women and men in the U.S. As MBC cannot be cured, treatment focuses on extending life and maintaining quality of life, but the average life span is 3 years after diagnosis. Under current law, MBC patients are subject to a 5-month waiting period for Social Security Disability Insurance and a staggering 24-month waiting period for Medicare benefits. Patients cannot afford to

wait and many die before they receive any federal help. The Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act, backed with bipartisan support, is the only way to make benefits available right away to people living with MBC. At the state level, the Center for Public Policy is also leading legislation that would prohibit those living with advanced disease from being subjected to step therapy protocols, Step therapy, also referred to as “fail first,” requires a patient to first try a health plan preferred drug, have that drug fail them – meaning the treatment didn’t work for the patient – before they can use the treatment their provider prescribed. While breast cancer cannot be prevented, identifying and mitigating genetic risk, which accounts for 5-10% of cases, can save lives. Unfortunately, the testing needed to learn one’s genetic predisposition to breast cancer is expensive and not attainable by all. The Reducing Hereditary Cancer Act would require Medicare to cover testing for some individuals with a known hereditary cancer mutation and those with a personal or family history due to genetics. For those with an inherited gene mutation, Medicare would also cover follow-up testing and imaging and risk-reducing surgeries. The Center for Public Policy has worked with legislative champions in Illinois and Oklahoma to introduce bills that would eliminate financial barriers to clinically appropriate genetic testing and recommended screenings based on the results of that testing for state-regulated insurance plans (e.g. private group, state employees). (StatePoint) Building and managing your wealth is a lifelong process that can have major implications for you, your children and other beneficiaries. While your path to building wealth should be tailored to your circumstances, this three-pronged approach from Freddie Mac can help you plan for a stable financial future. 1. Understand your money mindset: Understanding your relationship with money can help you identify opportunities to create healthier spending and saving habits. A positive outlook toward money can provide you with a strong base on which to build wealth and achieve goals. Conversely, a negative outlook can make you reluctant to take the steps you need to establish a strong financial history. For example, being overly focused on displaying wealth can lead to overusing credit. Likewise, becoming preoccupied with financial success to the point of anxiety can prevent you from spending the wealth you do have on items you need and want to live comfortably. By recognizing the factors that influence how you spend and save, you can make new choices that better support your financial goals. 2. Set and manage goals: Establishing and maintaining a set of defined financial goals is the next step when building wealth. Think about what you would like to accomplish over the short-, medium- and longterm, and make a savings plan to help you get there. It’s also important to take actions to safeguard your accumulated savings. This includes being mindful of inflation, guarding your information from scammers, and planning for unforeseen circumstances and emergencies. 3. Be prepared: Building an emergency fund can help you maintain financial stability by putting you in a better position to weather unexpected financial circumstances, such as a loss of income, unplanned medical bills or property damage from a storm. Creating an emergency budget can help you gauge how much you need to save, but in general, you should save up enough money to
