NICOR GAS EXPANDS PROGRAM TO HELP FAMILIES PAY THEIR NATURAL GAS UTILITY BILL

Naperville, Ill. -- Nicor Gas is making an additional $1 million available to The Salvation Army’s Shield of Caring program to help assist customers in need who may be struggling in the wake of rising energy prices and inflation that have been further strained by global conflicts. In October 2021, Nicor Gas contributed $5 million to The Salvation Army to help those still being impacted by the global health and financial crises. Legislation improves access to healthcare and removes barriers Continued from page 1 BY TIA CAROL JONES

Samantha Olds Frey, CEO of the Illinois Association of Medicaid Health Plans, talked about the Telehealth package that was passed in Illinois last year. The legislation was a culmination of things learned from the pandemic and public health emergency to ensure people have coverage for telehealth, on the commercial side and on the Medicaid side. Now, there is a focus to define what types of professions can provide telehealth. Before the pandemic, Illinois Medicaid had a restrictive telehealth benefit, especially regarding mental health. It was expanded during the pandemic. IAMHP anticipates some changes to areas of the telehealth legislation, more on the operational side. Those changes include having safe and secure HIPAA compliant telehealth platforms. For things like physical therapy and speech therapy, telehealth was done during the height of the pandemic, but it isn’t the best way to provide services. Healthcare providers have found safe ways to transition patients back to a physical setting. Medicaid is the largest payer of maternal health and mental health. The hope is that with support of HB5053 and SB3962, access to healthcare will improve outcomes and address disparities in Black and Latino communities. With the legislation in regard, it addresses challenges of someone in need of inpatient services for mental health

treatment or substance use disorder treatment not being able to find a location. The bill will allow and require bed availability to be posted and updated on a website each day. “It is critical because just like you and I wouldn’t call or try to make a reservation at a hotel that says they have no vacancies … this is the same for inpatient substance use disorder or mental health treatment. It allows you to focus your resources where there’s availability,” Frey said. This legislation also is building upon the Illinois Doc Assist program, which allows Primary Care Physicians to call on another doctor to get help when they have resource challenges. The legislation would expand the program beyond Primary Care Physicians to doctors and clinicians within substance use disorder and mental health providers, so they can get assistance. It allows every health care provider to get assistance and enables them to practice at the top of their license. “We want to make sure that patients with mental health and substance use disorder needs are treated in a comprehensive manner. Because, when they’re not treated in a comprehensive manner, we see adverse outcomes, like overdoses,” Frey said. “So, the more we can support our community-based providers to make sure they’re connecting members to care, to support them in treating members, we believe we will see improved outcomes and a decrease in overdoses.”

BBB issues warning for Department of Workforce Development Scam NORTHERN INDIANA – The BBB serving Northern Indiana has issued a warning to consumers about a new text message scam posing as the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. In previous years, scammers have preyed on individuals who had applied for unemployment benefits. In the new text scam, reported to BBB in March, consumers receive a text from DWD claiming to have a $3,800 payment available for returning to work, as part of a program called “Back2Work.” The message claims that the money will be direct deposited once the user clicks the link in the text message. The texts come from an out-of-state area code but contain a link that looks as if it’s from the State of Indiana. The links may contain malware, which could access sensitive information on your device and result in possible identity theft. The DWD confirmed they will not ask to verify information via text. Instead, users will be prompted to verify their information using the state’s ID.me portal. They encourage those who receive this text not to click on any links and delete any text claiming to be from DWD. If the link is clicked, it is possible the scammer will have access to information on the user’s device which could allow access to take over an unemployment claim or other personal information.

you to text “STOP” or “NO” so you won’t receive future texts. In reality, your reply tells them they have a real, active phone number and could open you up to future attacks. If a text message seems suspicious, don’t reply. Block the number and erase the message. Look for spelling and grammar errors. A large number of fake texts originate with offshore companies where they may be crafted by someone who isn’t completely fluent in the English language. Some scammers are highly skilled in English and it may even be their first language, so not every fake text you receive will follow this rule. If a website looks real, check again. If you do click on a link in a suspicious text message and it appears to take you to an official business website, don’t immediately let your guard down. Scammers can create a carbon copy of a legitimate website and if you login on the fake site they can steal your username and password. Check the URL carefully to make sure you are on the official website before you navigate within it. Keep your antivirus software up to date. Antivirus software can alert you to fake and unsafe websites if you happen to click on a link in an unsolicited text message. Keep the software installed and up to date to protect yourself against scammers. If you spot a scam, whether you’ve lost money or not, report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker at BBB.org/ScamTracker and the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Use BBB’s tips to avoid text scams: Watch out for suspicious links. Most scam text messages contain a link for you to click on. Scammers hope their message will cause you to feel so scared or excited, you’ll click the link without thinking. Some of these links could download malware onto your device. Others may lead you to lookalike websites where scammers hope to harvest your personal information, login ID, and passwords. If you spot a scam text, don’t reply. Some scammers ask

Awarded by the Health Resources & Service Administration (HRSA), the Opioid-Impacted Family Support Program (OIFSP) is now offered at Malcolm X College. These community and behavioral health training programs in opioid use disorders (OUD) and other substance use disorders (SUD) will work to expand the number of Peer Support Specialists and Community Health Workers available in Chicago and in Illinois. “Our city must have a robust pipeline of behavioral health specialists to address the traumas negatively impacting many of our communities,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “These certifications will strengthen our trained behavioral health workforce helping us to fight the opioid crisis and foster thriving communities. I commend Malcolm X College for deepening health education with the implementation of this program.” “Malcolm X College is a leader in health education with broad roots in our communities. We are excited to provide people from learners across the city and the state, the opportunity to work in behavioral health and expand the workforce dedicated to fighting opioid and substance use disorders,” said David A. Participants will be trained to work in teams, providing services to children whose parents are impacted by OUD and SUD, and other family members also impacted. The work has a special focus on children, adolescents and transitional aged youth in high need areas. “The peer-to-peer support model has been proven to be beneficial to individuals in recovery along with their loved ones. The focus on growing this workforce is intentional and essential. The need has never been greater than now,” said Veronica Sek, Director of Medical programs at Malcolm X College. Awarded in December 2021 by the IL Department of Human Services, the grant supports Malcolm X College’s Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) and Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) pathways at no cost to the student.

Collectively these two grants offer a pathway to earn multiple credentials in the Community Health Worker program with a specialization in SUD/OUD and recovery support. The Opioid-Impacted Family Support Program Focus (OIFSP) can be completed in 18 months; tuition and the cost of book are included. Those interested in helping fight the opioid epidemic will have to complete two levels of academic and in-field training. HUNTER MEASURE TO CREATE TASK FORCE TO RESOLVE DISCRIMINATION IN THE HOUSING INDUSTRY

Legislation sponsored by State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago) to create the Real Estate Valuation Task Force to combat discrimination in the housing industry passed the Senate Thursday. “Discrimination in the housing industry goes back decades, and it has yet to be rectified today,” Hunter said. “Black and Brown people won’t have a fair chance at renting and owning a home until discrimination is addressed on a systemic level.” The Real Estate Valuation Task Force is a response to an unresolved history of federal housing agencies, including the Federal Home Owners’ Loan Corporation and the Federal Housing Administration, discriminating against Black and Brown people when underwriting real estate loans. Both agencies devalued property or refused to make loans secured by property in communities of color. The harmful consequences of this discrimination is still evident today. “This is more than a historical issue – people are still being denied housing opportunities because of their skin color,” Hunter said. “I am confident that the task force will identify trends so we can put an end to housing discrimination in Illinois.” Anyone who has experienced housing discrimination can file a complaint with the Illinois Department of Human Rights. House Bill 4410 moves to the House for concurrence.

IN-HOME PATIENTS TO RECEIVE EQUITABLE CARE UNDER HARRIS’S LAW

To ensure patients needing home health services receive adequate care, State Senator Napoleon Harris, III (D-Harvey) advanced legislation to require all state health insurance plans to offer coverage. “Home care offers individualized services that are tailored to the client’s health care needs and finances,” Harris said. “By ensuring all state insurance plans cover home services, Illinois can play a tremendous role in protecting the most vulnerable among us, including older residents, the chronically ill and individuals with disabilities.” House Bill 5585 will require all health insurance plans governed by state law issued on or after Jan. 1, 2024, to provide coverage for access to home health services for the duration of medically necessary care. Home health services will be offered to any individual at their residence to treat significant illnesses or conditions diagnosed by a licensed physician. House Bill 5585 passed the Senate and now heads to the governor for further review.

SIMMONS SPONSORS MEASURE TO STRENGTHEN LEAD MITIGATION PROCEDURES PASSES SENATE

To protect communities across Illinois from the deadly impact of lead, State Senator Mike Simmons (D-Chicago) is leading a measure to strengthen lead mitigation procedures. “Virtually every community across the state is affected by lead in our water supply,” said Simmons. “This bill provides a systemic response to a problem that is systemic in nature, is decades in the making, and often does the most injury to Black and Brown communities.” House Bill 4369 would require the Illinois Department of Public Health to follow up on lead mitigation notices by carrying out inspections to ensure the work has been completed. The current law merely permits an inspection, while this legislation will require and enforce lead mitigation efforts. Lead is a heavy metal and suspected carcinogen that was frequently used in paint, plumbing materials, and many other items before the 1980s. Today, it is mostly found in aging water pipes, contaminated soil, and peeling paint found on windows, baseboards, trim, and doors. No amount of lead exposure is considered safe for children or adults. “Removing lead from all housing and facilities is long overdue and is critical towards overall health equity and racial equity across Illinois,” Simmons said. “I am hopeful we can continue to work together on this systemic solution that ensures the people of Illinois can have access to clean drinking water.” House Bill 4369 passed the Senate and awaits further consideration.

The new equipment will be part of CSU’s state-of-the-art Health Sciences Simulation Lab, which will train thousands of students for jobs in the medical profession. The College of Health Sciences and the College of Pharmacy at CSU are critical to sustaining a pipeline of underrepresented professionals by educating a caring and competent, and diverse student body. CSU graduates have 100 percent job placement in nursing and occupational therapy and the College of Pharmacy is first in the Midwest for graduating underrepresented students with doctoral degrees. “The COVID-19 pandemic magnified alarming disparities in our healthcare system and exacerbated workforce shortages. Chicago State University has been leading the way in training students to address these challenges. That’s why I secured this new federal investment in CSU’s Health Simulation Lab to help train a diverse, highly-skilled workforce of medical professionals,” said U.S. Senator Dick Durbin. “The Health Sciences Simulation Lab will provide top-level training to our students and supply the diverse leadership needed in the health profession,” said Zaldwaynaka (“Z”) Scott, Esq., President of Chicago State University. “Located in the heart of Chicago’s South Side, CSU is uniquely positioned to be the center of training for Health Sciences professionals that represent the patients they serve.” Chicago State University (CSU), founded in 1867, is the oldest public university in the Chicago Metropolitan area. The University’s five colleges offer over 70 undergraduate and graduate degree-granting and non-degree programs. CSU is committed to equity in education, serving as the only U.S. Department of Education-designated four-year Predominantly Black Institution in Illinois and ranked by a Harvard economist in the top 4% of public and private universities nationwide in supporting our graduates’ economic mobility. The University serves as a prominent civic space on the greater South Side of Chicago by hosting a multitude of athletic, educational, cultural, and recreational activities. The University is located near public transit that provides convenient access to the campus. Visit www.csu.edu.

Seven Tips for Managing Caregiver Stress During National Stress Awareness Month This April Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Offering Helpful Information to Family Caregivers

NEW YORK (March 31, 2022)— Stress can damage your health if you do not manage it properly—especially if you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia-related illness. As part of National Stress Awareness Month this April, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) is providing seven tips to help caregivers manage their stress. “Stress management and self-care are essential for every Alzheimer’s caregiver. Untreated stress increases the risk of caregiver burnout and can cause high blood pressure, heart problems, anxiety, depression, and numerous other health issues,” said Jennifer Reeder, LCSW, AFA’s Director of Educational and Social Services. “Being proactive in dealing with stress has both short-term and long-term benefits for caregivers’ physical, mental, and emotional health, which is why it’s something that they should prioritize.” AFA suggests the following tips for Alzheimer’s caregivers to prevent and manage their stress: • Flexibility helps. A caregiver’s attitude plays a huge role in stress levels—if the caregiver is calm and relaxed, it helps the individual living with Alzheimer’s to be as well. Conversely, an angry, agitated caregiver increases the chances that the person for whom they are caring will be angry and agitated too. Be adaptable, be positive, and aim for constructive solutions to changing situations. • Deal with what you can control. You cannot control every stress-causing factor, but you can control how you react to them. Focusing on finding solutions to the problem can help reduce the stress it’s causing. • Mind your health. Inadequate rest, poor diet and lack of exercise can all exacerbate stress (and create other health prob-

lems as well). As best you can, prioritize getting sleep, eating right, drinking plenty of water and being active. You cannot provide quality care to a loved one if you don’t take care of yourself. • Clear and refresh your mind. Exercise, yoga, meditating, listening to music, walking, or even taking a few deep breaths can all help relax the mind and reduce stress. Find something that works for you and do it regularly! • Take things one day at a time. Resolving everything at once is both impossible and unrealistic—don’t hold yourself to that unreasonable expectation. Prioritize, set practical goals, do your best to achieve them, and take things one day at a time. • Stay in touch. There are so many ways to stay socially connected with family and friends—visits, FaceTime, phone calls, text messages, and emails, just to name a few. Disconnecting from your support structure and staying bottled-up increases stress. • Be open with your feelings. Sometimes just talking about your stress can help relieve it. Whether it’s with someone in your support structure, a professional or even a stranger, don’t be reluctant to open up. AFA’s Helpline has licensed social workers available for caregivers seven days to provide support or even just listen. The AFA Helpline is available seven days a week to help provide information and support regarding caregiver stress and other caregiving questions. Connect with a licensed social worker by calling 866-232-8484, web chatting at www.alzfdn. org or sending a text message to 646-586-5283. The web chat and text message features can serve individuals in more than 90 different languages.

JOHNNIE WALKER TAPS BRITTANY HOWARD AND TIA P. TO CREATE OFFICIAL ANTHEM FOR ANGEL CITY FC NEW YORK PRNewswire -- Johnnie Walker, the most popular Scotch Whisky brand in the world, has announced the launch of First Strides, a long-term initiative that aims to celebrate, inspire and enable those people and organizations that are taking bold steps towards progress, and pushing boundaries to move culture forward for all. To kick off the program with a special nod to strides being made for women’s progress, Johnnie Walker and partners at the National Women’s Soccer League’s LA-based Angel City Football Club tapped five-time Grammy Award-winning artist Brittany Howard and LA-based artist Tia P. to create “Running with the Angels,” the first original anthem for a U.S. women’s professional sports team and the official anthem for the ACFC team. The song is an ode to the team’s trailblazing spirit, as the world’s first majority women-founded, owned and operated pro-soccer team, and will serve as a celebratory anthem for the team and fans as they take the field for their first season next month. “This anthem is a celebration of women, of Angel City FC, of the city of Los Angeles, and of everyone around the country doing bold things to create positive change in the world,” said Brittany Howard. “I’m proud to continue creating meaningful work with Johnnie Walker that hopefully inspires people to keep walking together towards a more equitable future.” Along with the anthem release, Johnnie Walker will enable more people to take bold steps towards progress through a series of First Strides grants. Anyone 21+ can apply for a First Stride grant but the brand will continue to dedicate funding to communities where inequality exists. Through a partnership with the go-to funding

marketplace for women-owned businesses IFundWomen, Johnnie Walker will continue to support women entrepreneurs and fuel women-owned businesses. The brand is also introducing a grants and mentorship program with first-of-its-kind streaming service Blacktag, who is changing the model for pay equity among Black creators. Particularly inspiring and impactful first strides will be identified by the ‘Walkers’ – a diverse group of thought leaders and cultural changemakers. This network includes powerhouse writer and producer Kenya Barris, actor, producer, and activist Sophia Bush, and comedian and creator Lilly Singh. “Progress is the core of Johnnie Walker’s DNA, which is why we are committed to celebrating and propelling the people and organizations taking bold steps to move culture forward,” said Sophie Kelly, Senior Vice President of Whiskies at Diageo North America. “Our partners at Angel City FC, IFundWomen and Blacktag are doing just that - breaking the mold and creating more equity - and we are proud to continue partnering with them and others to fund and toast First Strides.” The Johnnie Walker First Strides initiative builds on the impact of the brand’s ‘First Women’ campaign, launched in 2020 to celebrate the many women breaking glass ceilings to achieve monumental firsts. The campaign also highlighted the brand’s ongoing support of constitutional equality for women via partnership with the ERA Coalition, which continues today. Improve Your Home and Its Value (Family Features) Home upgrades happen for different reasons but enhancing your home’s curb appeal and value are often at the top of the list. These projects can make it easier to enjoy your home knowing they carry a return on investment of up to 92%, according to the Remodeling 2021 Cost vs. Value Report published in “Remodeling Magazine.” Plus, you’ll have the added benefit of knowing you’re making a sound investment should you decide to sell down the road.

high-ROI ideas to increase the value of your house

Stone Veneer Stone veneer is an upgrade that adds warmth and texture with the look of natural stone, but without the expense. It’s also a durable product that is low maintenance, so you don’t have to worry about sealing or painting. With the variety of styles and colors available, it’s easy for homeowners to mix and match to create a custom look. Mortarless options like ClipStone are designed to be installed with screws and common tools, making them accessible options for both professionals and DIYers. With a built-in water management system, overlapping edges to minimize gaps, reversible outside corners and a variety of accessories, mortarless options allow homeowners to achieve the look of traditional masonry without the hassle. Garage Doors Exterior features often bring a big return on investment because a home with strong curb appeal can make a great first impression on potential buyers. The garage doors are no exception. If you think of your garage doors as a purely functional element of your home, you may be surprised to learn garage door replacement is actually the best home upgrade you can make, according to the report. Garage doors aren’t just functional; they can be a focal point of your home’s exterior design, completely transforming the exterior. Depending on the style and features you choose, an updated garage door is also a smart strategy for managing climate and adding security to your home. Windows Windows are another smart investment for numerous reasons. Not only do they provide a sophisticated presence that can greatly enhance curb appeal, upgraded windows play a major role in energy conservation. Homeowners also rely on windows to make a bold statement. For example, Simonton black exterior windows and patio doors can help perfect a wide range of architectural styles including farmhouse, modern, industrial and contemporary designs. This award-winning line of vinyl windows offers homeowners a

variety of styles and colors to customize both their home’s interior and exterior spaces. The windows are AAMA Gold Certified, passing some of the industry’s most stringent quality assurance testing for air leakage, water penetration and wind pressure – resulting in low-maintenance windows with lasting durability, weather resistance and energy efficiency.

Deck Additions Adding a deck is an easy way to improve your home’s exterior appeal and increase your livable space. Wooden decks rank in the top 10 for ROI, according to the report. An attractive deck situated off the living room or kitchen can make those rooms feel larger, especially when you’re entertaining, and guests can circulate freely between indoor and outdoor spaces. A well-constructed deck also serves as a transition point from the home to the backyard, where you may invest in even more outdoor living features. You’ll achieve the greatest ROI by designing your deck to integrate seamlessly with your home and landscaping and even stone accents. Also take functional features into consideration, including privacy and protection from the wind and sun. Depending on your climate, it may be beneficial to design a deck for maximum shade during the warm months or to make the most of sunlight during the cool seasons. Features like built-in kitchens, stone accents, TV mounts and access to water features all lend high-end custom touches that also boost ROI. Siding If you’re considering updating your home’s color and trim, re-siding is a great way to transform its curb appeal while also earning a hefty return on the investment and giving yourself (or a future owner) the gift of lower maintenance living. With 15 different collections, Ply Gem Mastic has an array of solutions to help homeowners transform their living spaces such as board and batten, hand-split shake shingles, traditional Dutch lap siding and more. Each is available with detailed wood grain texture in a variety of rich, ontrend colors, including increasingly popular dark options. Entry Doors One of the simplest projects in the report, a new entry door can also make a big impact because it’s one of the first things potential buyers see. Not only can a steel door help make a good first impression, it also serves as an updated security feature and can offer additional insulation, which makes for a good investment if you live in an area that experiences extreme weather.
