Following a productive spring legislative session, state Rep. Kam Buckner, D-Chicago, cast his vote to pass a budget with support for working families, new proactive public safety measures and evidenced-based funding for education. He issued this statement: “After lengthy negotiations, we crafted a budget that mirrors the needs of the people of Illinois and puts our money where it’s going to do the most good, and I was happy to give my full support.”

“Public safety was also a priority this session, and I was pleased to see the proactive approach we took. Carjackings have been on the rise, and we allocated $48 million dollars to intervention programs, youth summer jobs programs and other positive methods of combating these crimes.”

“This budget also prioritized education funding, specifically evidence-based education funding. Money will go to schools and communities most in-need. As I said, in the budget negotiation process putting money where it will do the most good is important to me. By basing funding allocation on evidence and giving it to schools that need it for essentials, we will give our young people the resources they need to grow and develop in our education system despite where they may live.”

Most importantly, it will create more opportunities in communities where young people feel like they’re growing up with no options. At the end of the day, that’s our goal.”

HUNDREDS OF CHICAGO STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN A 3 DAY ENGINEERING COMPETITION

Project SYNCERE (Supporting Youth’s Needs with Core Engineering Research Experiments) will host its 5th annual ENpowered Games event on May 4th, 5th and 6th. This year there are two challenges; 1) Design and build Green Automations using Lego Roboticss, aimed at making homes more environmentally friendly and 2) Design a robot to play a unique game of shuffleboard. The ENpowered Games competition attracts hundreds of middle school students from across Chicago’s South and West sides, allowing them to showcase their knowledge and skills against other students, and may the best engineer win.

The ENpowered Games is the culmination of a 10-week program in which students have learned about engineering careers, how to apply the engineering design process and mastery of specific engineering skill. This year’s competition will bring together students from 9 Chicago area schools.

The first two days of the competition will consist of the students using their engineering skills to design and build a robot to play in a shuffle board competition. This challenge consists of designing, building and testing a robot that automatically finds cups on a playing field and pushes them into a series of zones to gain the most points. They will also present their Green Smart Home designs. The final day of the competition will serve as the closing ceremony and celebration of the student participants. On May 6th we will announce the winners of this year’s competition while highlighting the work that they accomplished over the year.

Doctor uses social media to educate community

Taylor is the medical director for congregate settings at the Chicago Department of Public Health. The goal of the show is to educate community members on the comorbid conditions that exist, something that was revealed during the pandemic as the reason why so many were susceptible to COVID-19. “I felt that it was really important that we start to have some conversations, in regards to how we can all achieve optimal health in the Black community,” she said.

The show launched on the CDPH’s Instagram on Thursday, April 21st. The first guest was Dana Divine, who talked about her breast cancer journey and the importance of early detection.

Divine is a community engagement manager with Equal Hope and hosts a show called Equal Health Equal Hope on WVON. The discussion was about mental health, nutrition, and resources CDPH offers. During the discussion, the audience had the opportunity able to ask questions and have some of those questions answered live.

Research showed that the CDPH had a good following on Instagram and utilizing Instagram Live as a means to reach people. Taylor would love to reach more people by possibly utilizing Facebook Live in the future. She also is open to doing Tik Tok. Taylor also wants to take the show to other locations as a way to highlight Black-owned businesses.

“My goal is to inspire, empower and to educate, then to mobilize. I think it is so important. I think we can have these talks, but then, we also have to think about what are the next steps.

How do we get people to mobilize and really take power over their health,” she said.

Another goal of the show is to provide the audience with tools so they can advocate for themselves when it comes to their health – enabling them to be the best stewards of their health.

Taylor believes that addressing health disparities begins with education, encouraging people to be informed about the importance of routine tests. Taylor pointed out that while Black people might not be diagnosed more often with certain health issues, they are the ones dying of those issues more often. She wants individuals who are uninsured or underinsured to have access to resources within the community. She would like to see more equitable healthcare for everyone.

“As a physician, as a Black woman from the South Side of Chicago, having a history of working in marginalized communities, I feel like it’s really important that we bring these issues to the forefront,” she said. “I think it’s really important for individuals to see trusted messengers that look like them, that resemble them, that they can relate to. I really think we need to continue to have these ongoing conversations. These conversations should be ongoing, it should not be a one and done.”

The show will air on Instagram Live at 6 p.m. every other Thursday on @ChiPublicHealth. During the next weeks the show will feature a discussion on Maternal Health, MICAH Baby Book, Doula, Postpartum Depression with guest Dr. Candice Robinson on May 5th; How Men Cry: Mental Health, Black Men’s Mental Health, Women’s Mental Health, Trauma with guests Jordan Spits and Dr. Wilnise Jasmin on May 19th; and Coffee Hip Hop & Mental Health with guest Chris LeMark on June 2nd.

Adult Literacy at South Suburban College: Free Learning Opportunities are Available and Volunteer Tutors are Needed SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill.– Illiteracy is an issue that can be debilitating in so many ways for adults who never received the proper instruction. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. South Suburban College is currently seeking tutors and participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program.

The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. SSC is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of the free program.

New tutor training sessions will take place at the Main Campus in South Holland on Tuesdays and Thursdays from through May 19th and from June 7th through June 23rd from 4:00 –5:30 p.m. The tutor training is a 12-hour program that culminates with literacy training certification. Online training is also provided. Tutors will continue to receive free professional development services throughout this program. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more.

Once certified, SSC’s volunteer literacy tutors visit their adult learners at locations within or near their neighborhoods. Tutoring sites have already been established at the following locations: Acorn Public Library, Oak Forest; Glenwood-Lynwood Library; Harvey Public Library; Phoenix Public Library; Calumet City Public Library; Grande Prairie Library, Hazel Crest; Homewood Public Library; South Holland Public Library; South Suburban College Library, Main Campus; Oak Forest Center Library, Oak Forest; Lansing Public Library; Dolton Public Library; Riverdale Public Library; Blue Island Public Library; Dixmoor Public Library; Tinley Park Public Library; Markham Public Library and Midlothian Public Library. Tutoring is flexibly scheduled based on the availability of the tutors, learners and tutoring sites.

SSC’s Office of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.

Landmarks Illinois releases 2022 Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois Landmarks Illinois announced the 2022 Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois at a virtual press conference this afternoon. This year’s Most Endangered list is a targeted call to action for historic and culturally significant sites in Cook, Will and Winnebago Counties that face a serious risk of demolition and/or are suffering significant neglect due to lack of maintenance or insufficient funding for repair.

“The 2022 Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois are prominent examples of how a lack of funding, planning, creative vision and political will to invest in our historic sites has a detrimental effect on our communities,” said Bonnie McDonald, President & CEO of Landmarks Illinois. “These endangered sites all have historic, cultural and economic value, and we want their preservation to serve as catalysts for hope and positive change. Demolishing or improperly redeveloping them would rob current and future generations of the chance to experience them and learn about their unique stories.”

Century & Consumers Buildings - Chicago, Cook County Two highly visible, early 20th-century commercial buildings at 202-220 S. State St., which sit within the National Register-listed Loop Retail Historic District, face demolition by the federal government. Previous redevelopment plans were halted due to security concerns by the adjacent federal courts, but demolition will leave a noticeable hole in the downtown State Street corridor.

Eugene S. Pike House - Chicago, Chicago County The picturesque, late 19th-century home once used as a “Watchman’s Residence” for the Forest Preserve District of Cook County sits at the southern edge of the Dan Ryan Woods and is part of the National Register-listed Ridge Historic District. The house is vacant and deteriorating and needs an outside user and investor.

Will County Courthouse - Joliet, Will County Built in 1969 and designed by Otto Stark of C.F. Murphy Associates in partnership with Krugel, Healy & Moore Architects, the Brutalist building is at risk of demolition due to Will County’s current lack of interest to explore reuse opportunities for the architecturally significant but vacant structure.

Elks Lodge No. 64 - Rockford, Winnebago County A former community meeting space built in 1912, the architecturally significant but long-vacant structure faces demolition by neglect. The building, which serves as an important gateway to the West Downtown Rockford Historic District where revitalization and reinvestment is booming, requires emergency repairs as well as a rehabilitation and reuse plan.

Gillson Park - Wilmette, Cook County A 60-acre, Prairie-style public park sitting along Lake Michigan that features naturalist landscapes and open space beloved by locals. However, the Wilmette Park District is considering changes to the 107-yearold park that would alter its passive design and remove greenery to add more roads and parking.

The annual Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois is Landmarks Illinois’ largest and longest-running advocacy program, beginning in 1995. The annual list aims to boost advocacy efforts and build support for each property’s eventual preservation.

For the first time in the program’s 27-year history, Landmarks Illinois has less than 10 sites on the Most Endangered list.

“We had a number of places come close to being included on the 2022 list, but thanks to partnerships with local and state government officials and the tireless dedication of local advocates and our staff, these places no longer face an imminent threat,” said McDonald.

“We think this year’s more compact Most Endangered list is proof our efforts are working to save Illinois’ historic places.”

GHOST GUNS TO BE PUT TO REST BY SENATOR COLLINS Illinois Senate Democrats will outline a plan to crack down on the growing threat of unserialized firearms with legislation banning the production and distribution of “ghost guns”–a measure filed by State Senator Jacqueline Collins (D-Chicago).

“My commitment to banning ghost guns and reducing violence in our state has not been, nor will it be, hindered by any obstacle, legislative or otherwise,” Collins said. “So long as we allow fatal gun violence to run rampant in our communities, we leaders do a disservice to the people we represent, and it is my goal to assure the state is tackling these issues at their source.”

With the alarming rise of gun violence in a number of Illinois communities, the existence of untraceable firearms has become a pressing public safety concern.

Ghost guns are firearms that lack serial identification, and they are growing in popularity because of their ease of accessibility. Not only can they be ordered online, but they can also be purchased absent a background check or a FOID card, which is required to carry either a firearm or ammunition in Illinois.

House Bill 4383, an initiative introduced by Senator Collins, would require all firearms –including 3D printed guns –to be serialized, effectively prohibiting the creation and sale of these weapons. Unserialized guns prevent law enforcement from thoroughly conducting their criminal investigations, which hinders their efforts to address the violence in our state. Illinois law enforcement has seen a 400% increase in these types of weapons in just the last five years.

“Our communities have become too accustomed to the tragedies of fatal gun violence,” Collins said. “Protecting our most vulnerable populations requires initiatives like this that stop the proliferation of deadly weapons, prevent crime and support people as they navigate through adverse circumstances.”

This initiative is especially pertinent for communities of color and low-income populations, which typically experience higher rates of armed violence than other communities. HB 4383 passed the General Assembly and goes to the governor for final approval.

LANDMARKS ILLINOIS ISSUES CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2022 LANDMARKS ILLINOIS RICHARD H. DRIEHAUS FOUNDATION PRESERVATION AWARDS Landmarks Illinois is now accepting nominations for the 2022 Landmarks Illinois Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Awards. Nominations for the annual awards program are due June 1, 2022, and can be submitted using Landmarks Illinois’ online nomination form found here.

The annual awards program, generously supported since 1994 through a grant from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, honors outstanding preservation projects in Illinois and/or individuals, organizations and advocacy efforts that demonstrate a strong commitment to protecting the places that are important to the people and communities of Illinois.

A jury of preservation professionals will review all nominations submitted and determine the winners of this year’s awards. Those selected for awards will be honored at a public ceremony in Chicago held in the fall and receive a cash prize as well as a custom-designed trophy.

Details on the event will be announced at a later date.

NOMINATION REQUIREMENTS Nominations submitted for the 2022 Landmarks Illinois Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Awards must be projects or people located in Illinois.

United Partners with OneTen to Help Create One Million Family-Sustaining Jobs for Black Talent Over 10 Years CHICAGO PRNewswire -- United Airlines announced a new collaboration with OneTen, a coalition of leading chief executives and their companies committed to creating one million family-sustaining careers for Black talent with opportunity for advancement over the next 10 years. The collaboration with OneTen comes as United has already hired more than 6,000 people since January and expects to hire an additional 8,000 this year alone – with the goal to add 50,000 people to United in the next five years.

ifteen years ago, at the age of 42, Israel Robledo was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Shocked, he spent the next nine months coming to terms with his diagnosis. “I was married. I had three girls at home. I was working as a schoolteacher. And I was thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, my life is over,’” he says. “I only knew about older people having Parkinson’s.”

But, after that first nine months, Robledo realized that being a victim didn’t suit him. So, he decided to be proactive and became a patient advocate for those with Parkinson’s disease, working to ensure transparency and diversity in clinical research. Robledo, who is Hispanic, is one of 18 members from underrepresented communities offering their experience to biotechnology company Biogen.

Community Feedback The Community Advisory Board (CAB) was established to serve as a bridge between Biogen team members and communities that have encountered a lack of education, awareness and access to clinical trials. This includes those who identify as Black or African American and Hispanic and/or Latino, and it has recently expanded to include Native Americans, Indigenous People, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

Further compounding these issues is the distrust of clinical trials due to historical events and injustices.

Robledo credits the company for its approach of making direct, immediate changes to communication materials based on CAB members’ input.

“I’ve been a patient advocate with many pharmaceutical companies, but none have been like Biogen,” he says. “When other companies ask for patient input, they say, ‘This is what we’ve done. Tell us if you like it or not.’ But Biogen says, ‘Tell us what we need to change so that it impacts the patient community the way it needs to.’”

The final products are, as Robledo says, “pretty darn good. I take pride in saying these materials are something that we came up with. Providing a voice is why I became a patient advocate.”

Looking to the Future The CAB and Biogen’s work towards building diversity, equity and inclusion into its clinical research is garnering industry attention, winning the 2021 Global Pharma Patient Champion Award.

And Biogen’s recent addition of voices from other underrepresented communities points toward its continued efforts to better understand the needs and challenges among various populations. The end goal: to better develop potential medicines that are safe and effective for all.

“It’s our way of ensuring that a diverse voice is heard and built into our clinical development and the way we approach drug development,” Wilson says. “When we look at the work ahead of us to really improve representation in our clinical trials, it’s so critical that we’re involving the diverse communities and voices in that process.”

Improving Representation in Breast Cancer Clinical Trials & Developing Better Medicines for All

T

he devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly on communities of color, has been a painful reminder of the racial and ethnic disparities that have long existed in our country. In the United States, Black people tend to have higher rates of chronic and progressive conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer, and face greater obstacles when it comes to prevention, detection, and treatment. This is especially true in the breast cancer space.

“Race, literacy, financial barriers, access, social, systemic and hereditary backgrounds should not be determinants of life and health equity,” said Maimah Karmo, President, Tigerlily Foundation.

Rep. Robin Kelly Introduces Health Equity and Accountability Act WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Tuesday, April 26, Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02), Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Braintrust, introduced the Health Equity and Accountability Act (HEAA). HEAA is a comprehensive and strategic legislative roadmap that aims to eliminate racial and ethnic health inequities. This is the only legislation that directly addresses the intersection of health inequities with race and ethnicity, as well as immigration status, age, disability, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, language, and socio-economic status.

“The Health Equity and Accountability Act will reduce racial and ethnic health inequities, address the maternal mortality crisis, strengthen health data collection & research, expand access to mental health care, target gun violence, improve language access in health care, diversify our health care workforce, and so much more,” said Congresswoman Kelly.
