Legislation Banning Junk Fees Passes out of the House
BILL NOW HEADS TO THE SENATE TO END DECEPTIVE JUNK FEES IN ILLINOIS
Springfield, IL – In a continued effort to push for stronger consumer protections and increased transparency around pricing, State Representative Bob Morgan (D-Deerfield) successfully passed HB 4629, out of the House. This bill was designed to eliminate so-called “junk fees” or hidden charges often found at the end of receipts or last point of sale. The bill marks a major step towards promoting transparent pricing and fair competition in the state.
State Representative Bob Morgan (D-Deerfield) emphasized the benefits for Illinois consumers: “This legislation will help every single consumer in Illinois. When this bill passes the Senate and becomes law, we will be ensuring consumers that the price they see is the price they pay, with no hidden fees, and no surprise charges at checkout. This is a win for consumers and a win for fair business competition.”
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reports that junk fees cost nearly $3,200 annually for an average family of four. This substantial impact on household budgets highlights the urgency of protecting consumers. HB 4629 will empower the Illinois Attorney General to crack down on junk fees using enforcement powers found in the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Practices Act. The new law would help level the playing field for honest businesses that have been transparent with their customers.
Junk Fee Ban initiatives have gained nationwide support, with more people becoming acutely aware that an extra dollar here and a dollar there are adding up. According to a survey by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, over 85% of Americans support measures to ban junk fees to ensure transparent pricing across all industries. This strong public backing reflects the widespread frustration with deceptive fees that can obscure the true cost of goods and services.
As the focus now shifts to the Illinois Senate, the bill’s passage would signal a significant advancement in consumer protections and positions Illinois as a national leader in setting standards for pricing transparency and fair business practices.

BY TIA CAROL JONESSLIPPAGE was founded by well-known dance scholar Thomas F. DeFrantz in 2002 on the campus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The initiative looks at performance and research.
DeFrantz was also interested in how technology could help people move beyond societal, cultural and personal issues.
SLIPPAGE’s work involves performance, research and how all these things interconnect. The initiative hosts conferences and symposiums. Its most recent research looks at Black social dance and regional dance practices in Chicago, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Houston and Los Angeles.
Dickson hopes people take away a sense of wonderment about the possibilities in their own life and take what materials they have at their disposal to use as technological tools for transformation.
Dickson said that oftentimes when she asks people what they do artistically, some people will say they do not do anything artistically, but upon asking further questions, she discovers they do something artistic, but the people don’t consider it artistic because of the way it is valued by society.
SLIPPAGE looks at how curators and museums approach addressing the needs of communities of color, and how those curators look at Black people who create art, in between traditional performance and visual arts, and how they program those shows.
SLIPPAGE Lab has moved from MIT to Durham, North Carolina and is now at Northwestern University, where it has been for two years. SLIPPAGE Lab came to Northwestern when DeFrantz became a professor there.
Shireen Dickson is the Managing Director at SLIPPAGE Lab. It does work on a national level and partners with local dance companies that include Red Clay Dance Theatre and M.A.D.D. Rhythms.
re-OrientationS will feature the work of DeFrantz, Kate Alexandrite, Ayan Felix and MX Oops coming together in a performance that showcases their different approaches to the arts and Black identity in different ways, with different mediums.
“I’m hoping that through the everyday, through simple devices that are at our hands and at our disposal, we can access other parts of ourselves, and other ways of how we relate to each other,” she said.
Dickson said there is an openness to authenticity and alternative ways to finding how that authenticity connects with other people now since the pandemic. She said re-OrientationS speaks to the urgency of wanting authenticity and community.
When it comes to SLIPPAGE Lab, Dickson said in Chicago there are so many different pockets of people doing the work around the performing arts and social justice in small enclaves. Those people are making it happen in neighborhoods across the city and that energy is dynamic.
“SLIPPAGE is really curious about placement and how they can support what is already happening in an environment where things are already going on. Here, we’re really interested in using this performance as a platform to understand a little bit more deeply about how Chicago moves and how we can support all of the ways Chicago is moving,” Dickson said.
Farragut Career Academy IB World School Renaming Gymnasium After Former Teacher/Basketball Coach William
CHICAGO— Farragut Career Academy IB World School honored a beloved coach and teacher with a ceremony to name its gym the “William “Wolf” Nelson Gymnasium.” Nelson, a Farragut alumnus, has taught math for 33 years and was the varsity and junior varsity boys’ basketball coach for 40 years, respectively. He retired following the 2022-23 school year.
District officials, elected officials, school alumni, former players, and community members convened Friday night to celebrate and honor Nelson, who coached Chicago Public League legends such as Basketball Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett, Ronnie Fields, Michael Dunigan, and Michael Wright.
Nelson was honored earlier this year at the Chicago Public League Basketball Championships at Credit Union 1 Arena, honoring his decades-long commitment to coaching and mentoring student-athletes.
“Coach Nelson embodies the true spirit of a Chicago Public Schools educator. He’s dedicated most of his life to teaching and coaching our students,” said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. “Our District is extremely fortunate to have him for as long as we did. Congratulations Coach Wolf on a job well done.”
Friday’s guests watched as Coach Nelson, affectionately known as “Coach Wolf,” became the recipient of several honors, some of which were a complete surprise to him.
Farragut Principal Virag Nanavati unveiled a new sign reading “William “Wolf” Nelson Gymnasium” situated above
the gym doors as well as a mural featuring Coach Wolf within the gymnasium. Alderperson Michael D. Rodriguez presented a resolution honoring Coach Nelson for his work within the 22nd ward, and former players and assistant coaches, including Emmanuel Little, Farragut’s current varsity boys basketball coach and school alumnus, offered a series of speeches to honor the beloved coach. Finally, the school presented a newly created “Coach Wolf Scholarship for Academic Achievement.” The scholarship recipients – two basketball players with the highest overall grade point average – will receive academic scholarships.
“It is incredible that Wolf’s legacy will continue to shape the next generation of Farragut students and student-athletes through this honor,” said David Rosengard, Executive Director of Chicago Public Schools Sports Administration. “Wolf’s impact on thousands of student-athletes’ lives is unparalleled and we are grateful for his unwavering commitment to CPS students and communities over the last 40-plus years.”
Nelson, the longest-tenured coach in school history, compiled a 541-307 record over 33 seasons leading the boys varsity team. His teams won eight conference championships (including three undefeated seasons), a Chicago Public League title (1995), two super-sectional championships and three Elite Eight finishes. CHICAGO – Chicago Public Schools (CPS), in collaboration with many community partners, is honored to announce the creation of a science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) programming in North Lawndale for the 2024-25 School Year. The partnership involves three current CPS schools; Chalmers School of Excellence, Johnson School of Excellence, and The Collins Academy High School, and promises to provide students with a well-balanced education that deepens their knowledge in STEAM subjects, starting in elementary school and continuing through high school –yielding more graduates prepared for in-demand STEAM careers.
CHICAGO -- Governor JB Pritzker joined Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle, the Department of Healthcare and Family Services, and advocates to highlight the State’s proposed $10 million investment to eliminate up to $1 billion in medical debt for 340,000 low-income Illinoisans. In partnership with Cook County, which already implemented a similar program for county residents, the event aimed to garner support for legislation that will fund a debt relief program statewide.

“We are excited to celebrate this strong academic opportunity in North Lawndale, which has been the result of years of community-led partnerships,” says CEO Pedro Martinez. “Our goal is to meet students and families where they are, investing in and strengthening our neighborhood schools and local communities. financial choices as the price tag on healthcare continues to increase,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “At a cost of around a penny for every dollar of medical debt we eliminate, we have the potential to eliminate billions of dollars of debt and help millions of Illinoisans. Working together with members of the General Assembly on this as we continue to negotiate and pass a balanced budget, this lowcost program to eliminate medical debt will alleviate a major burden on families across Illinois.”
“This new academic programming is a welcomed addition to our North Lawndale schools, enriching teaching and learning to support a stronger Chicago workforce for tomorrow,” said Chief Shontae Higginbottom who oversees schools in Network 5 on the West Side of the city. “Our collaboration with our dedicated community partners, families and staff reminds us again that we are better together.”
Lawndale - and 63 percent of high school students - travel outside of their community to access their education. This new STEAM Partnership will not only mean shorter commute times for students to access a high-quality education, but it is a model that may be used in other parts of the city to ensure greater equity in the CPS educational experience.

“In Cook County, our Medical Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI) has already assisted over 200,000 residents and eliminated nearly $350 million in debt. The stories of relief and gratitude we’ve received from participants underscore the impact the program is having on the lives of our residents,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “We commend Governor JB Pritzker and the State of Illinois for launching their own program aimed at medical debt relief. Medical debt is a leading cause of bankruptcy and government has an obligation to tackle the financial barriers that affect our citizens’ health and well-being. Medical debt relief is a crucial step, and it is part of a broader, equitable strategy to enhance the financial stability and support the holistic well-being of Illinois residents.”
Beginning in School Year 2024-25, students in the area will have access to a robust STEAM curriculum that will be integrated into the courses at these three schools. A STEAM curriculum promotes creative and critical thinking, cross-disciplinary problem-solving, and gives students the opportunity to investigate, analyze, solve problems and work in teams. To ensure students are prepared for post-graduation, they will also have opportunities to earn college credit or an associates degree in high school, mentorship and paid internships, industry-approved certifications, and scholarships.
A nearly decade-long collaborative effort among community partners drove this programming forward. In 2015, North Lawndale Community Action Council (NLCAC)/North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council (NLCCC) Education Committee developed a Quality-of-Life Plan that included the creation of the STEAM Partnership. The group has sought investment to support this new educational opportunity, and since 2017, member organizations of the NLCAC/ NLCCC and CPS have worked together to make the project a reality.
“It is exciting that the North Lawndale NLCAC/NLCCC Education Committee’s six-(6) year-vision of transforming two elementary schools and one high school into STEAM Partnership Magnet Academies, is becoming a reality in the North Lawndale Community,” writes Dr. Betty Green and Dr. Leonard Moore, co-chairs of the NLCAC. “This was a community-led process to develop the “Next Chapter” for the North Lawndale’s Quality-of Life-Plan.”
“Medical debt can be a crippling burden for families, and this proposed investment will alleviate a major financial strain so that people can focus on what’s most important: keeping themselves and their families healthy,” HFS Director Elizabeth Whitehorn said. “The proposed medical debt buyback program strongly aligns with the Department’s mission, and will complement our ongoing work to eliminate barriers that prevent people from accessing high-quality health care.”
These opportunities are available due to Collins’ conversion into an early college STEAM high school, becoming one of 14 such Early College STEM/ STEAM High Schools. Another 37 elementary schools offer STEM and STEAM programming across the District. Career forecasts show that 80 percent of jobs created in the next decade will require some form of math and science skills.
“While we need to take child abuse and mistreatment seriously, we must also remember that kids will be kids and accidents happen,” said Lightford (D-Maywood). “Cases of abuse and mistreatment must be thoroughly, accurately and transparently investigated before making a decision to remove a child from their home.”
Families across the state have faced wrongful allegations of child abuse or neglect due to medical conditions, birth injuries and normal childhood accidents that result in findings that are misinterpreted as signs of abuse.
Lightford’s measure would set forth a number of protections that must be provided to a parent or guardian at the center of an abuse or neglect investigation. Under the measure, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services would be required to notify the parent or guardian of an investigation and give them the opportunity to submit a second medical opinion to be considered in the investigation.
Further, if a medical professional examines a child for the purpose of providing an opinion to DCFS regarding whether the child’s injury or condition is suspicious for child maltreatment, they must identify that intent to the parent or guardian and alert them that they may be required to communicate with law enforcement and provide court testimony.
The STEAM Partnership will evolve over the next few years in instruction, course offerings and enrichment experiences including engineering, robotics, chess, coding, Spanish and French, book clubs, and more. The District will invest in STEAM staffing and supports, including professional development, at each school over the next five years. The District will consider long-term capital improvements as part of the District’s Educational Facilities Master Plan.
Of the 142,000 investigations of possible abuse or neglect investigated by DCFS, 98,000 were not substantiated.
“As a parent whose child is in the hospital for medical treatment, you have the right to know when the doctor’s role shifts from caring for your child and providing you with information to the dual capacity role of examining and diagnosing your child and sharing information with a government agency that could potentially take your child away,” said Lightford. “At the forefront, the measure is about transparency and humanity.” Senate Bill 378 passed the Senate Thursday and heads to the House for further consideration.

In his FY25 Budget Address, Governor Pritzker introduced a four-year plan to eliminate an estimated $4 billion in medical debt for over one million Illinoisans. The proposal includes a partnership with Undue Medical Debt (formerly known as RIP Medical Debt), a national nonprofit focused on abolishing financially burdensome medical debt and promoting systemic change for patients across the country. By working with Undue Medical Debt, the State will pay one penny (on average) to buy back and eliminate every one dollar of medical debt.
“We’re thrilled to see state and county governments coming together to support the unburdening of residents with un-payable medical debts,” said Undue Medical Debt CEO and President Allison Sesso. “Governor Pritzker and President Preckwinkle exemplify passionate, practical leaders who understand the importance of both helping people here and now with medical debt relief while also continuing to explore upstream, policy solutions to the medical debt crisis.”
The programming reflects the District’s focus on equity and commitment to strengthening neighborhood schools, which will be further outlined in the District’s next five-year strategic plan. Currently, 43 percent of all students in North

In Illinois, 14% of the population has medical debt in collections. However, communities of color are disproportionately impacted, with nearly 20% of the Illinois population in communities of color having accumulated medical debt in collections. Those struggling with the weight of medical debt face unique challenges, including an increased risk of bankruptcy, difficulties affording basic needs, and even pressure to forgo needed medical care.
SPRINGFIELD — To protect buyers, lenders and homeowners, State Senator Robert Marwick has advanced legislation that would lay out regulations for online foreclosure sales.
“Losing a home through foreclosure proceedings is one of the most difficult experiences a person can face,” said Martwick (D-Chicago). “This legislation both permits and sets regulations for online foreclosure sales, which can ensure the best possible outcomes for people facing this difficult financial stress.”
The measure would allow online foreclosure sales to be conducted online, in-person or both, and would require the method be included in the notice of sale. Further, the measure includes requirements for a proper online sale including allowable fees, registration and identification requirements, and the bidding procedure.
“Coach Wolf is possibly the most revered member of our school community. We’re completely elated that Farragut was able to recognize him for his accomplishments,” said Nanavati. “Coach Wolf will be missed, but his legacy will live on.”

In July 2022, the Cook County board approved President Toni Preckwinkle’s proposal to begin partnering with Undue Medical Debt and provide relief to residents. By utilizing a portion of the county’s American Rescue Plan Act Funds, Cook County has abolished nearly $350 million in medical debt to date, benefitting more than 200,000 people. Undue Medical Debt collaborates with providers like hospitals and physicians’ groups to acquire qualifying medical debts for abolishment.
Historically, judicial foreclosure sales take place at the local courthouse, but over the past few years, there has been a rise in online sales and unregulated third-party entities offering this service. This lack of regulation can result in bad actors manipulating the auction process and can endanger user’s data security.
Online sales can offer a number of benefits over in-person courthouse sales. These sales provide flexibility and transparency, allowing interested buyers to bid on their own schedule and in a more accessible way for those unable to travel to the courthouse. It also provides information to potential bidders beyond what can be provided in a newspaper advertisement, allowing bidders to conduct due diligence on the property.
“Online foreclosure sales will increase the number of bidders, which will provide a higher sale price for the property and reduce the possibility of debt remaining for the homeowner,” Martwick said.
Senate Bill 2919 passed the Senate Wednesday. It now goes to the House for further consideration.
ATLANTA, PRNewswire -- Award-winning digital news brand UrbanGeekz has teamed up with Black-owned ride-hailing app Moovn to share its content with passengers on the move.
The wide-reaching syndication deal gives riders across the globe direct access to UrbanGeekz content right in the comfort of Moovn ridesharing cars. Embedded in the interface design, the Moovn mobile app empowers passengers to read, watch, and engage with UrbanGeekz during trips.
“I’ve always been someone who thinks outside the box,” said UrbanGeekz founder and CEO Kunbi Tinuoye. “For years, I’ve had this huge vision to showcase our content to a captive audience of passengers sitting in the back seat of rideshares. We just needed to find alignment with the right partner, and that’s why we are so excited to collaborate with Moovn.”
The Partnership Is History in The Making
The first-of-its-kind deal is way ahead of the curve. This is the first time a Black-owned news platform has inked a content partnership pact on a ridesharing mobile application. Moovn now offers a unique opportunity for its passengers that the big players haven’t adequately explored.
“I’m very excited by this fantastic partnership between Moovn and UrbanGeekz,” said Moovn founder and CEO Godwin Gabriel, who holds an MBA from the Foster School of Business. “We believe this deal will add enormous value for our riders and Moovn users who can now gain direct access to UrbanGeekz content on-ride, or even not on-ride through our subscription and email marketing campaigns.”
The agreement will extend the reach of UrbanGeekz’s breaking news, feature stories, expert columns, analytical articles, product reviews, and original video content to riders around the world. “It will expand UrbanGeekz’s global footprint to our international audience and subscriber base,” added Gabriel.” It’s something that’s never been done before, and it just shows the respective growth of our brands. We (Moovn) have plans for even more growth as we continue to attract more investment dollars.”
Redefining The Ridesharing Experience in the U.S. and Africa
Moovn currently operates in several cities across the globe as it continues its ambitious plan to expand
in Western and emerging markets. Founded by Seattle-based, Tanzanian-born Godwin Gabriel, the ridesharing app operates in NYC, New York; Seattle, Washington; Los Angeles, California; and Vancouver, Canada. In Africa, Moovn operates in Nairobi, Kenya; Arusha, Tanzania; Lusha; Zambia; and four cities in Tanzania: Arusha, Dodoma, Mwanza, and Gabriel’s home city, Dar-es-salaam.
Moovn has a full-time team in its Seattle headquarters, with employees working out of its Nairobi regional office to support Sub-Saharan operations.
“Our Africa strategy has paid off very well, and we have increased our market exposure on the continent. We are now positioning ourselves to become the third ridesharing option in the United States. Part of our expansion strategy includes entering at least nine U.S. cities by the end of the year. We are currently piloting our services in Washington, D.C.; Atlanta, Georgia; Boston, Massachusetts; and San Francisco, California.”
Collaboration Aligns With UrbanGeekz’s
As UrbanGeekz solidifies its standing as a trusted source of information and inspiration for diverse audiences, this pioneering deal aligns with its vision to broaden its audience across major cities in the States and Africa.
“UrbanGeekz’s passion has always been to create premium business, technology, and innovation content from a diverse and multicultural perspective,” said Cambridge University alum Tinuoye. “Our goal is to educate, inspire, and entertain our users. So, for our content to now reach an even wider audience that’s not just in the West but across major hubs in Africa is something that makes me extremely proud.”
Moovn’s Driver-Centric Model Focuses On Fair Treatment Of Drivers
Ridesharing technology has boomed into a multi-billion-dollar industry over the past decade, with the dominant players being Uber and Lyft. However, Moovn offers several unique features that differentiate its offerings. Gabriel describes his company as a driver-centric business that offers one of the most attractive revenue-sharing splits for drivers in the industry. With this model, he adds, drivers can make more money, and the profit distribution is fairer. By prioritizing the well-being of drivers, Moovn offers a business model centered on a more equitable profit distribution.
“Moovn was founded on the principle of fairness and transforming lives within the communities we operate in,” said Gabriel. “We are driver-centric, and this is something ingrained in our mission, to put the driver first because we believe if they are treated fairly and compensated well, they will go the extra mile for our customers. The team cares deeply about passengers as well. Moovn has no ‘surge pricing,’ and riders can schedule trips well in advance, even up to a month.”
The app allows users to book rides instantly or ahead of time, selecting the type of vehicle they want. In addition to cars, Moovn offers options for tuk-tuks, three-wheeled taxis, and motorcycles in Africa. Another arm of the business is Moovn Rush, which allows users to request drivers to transport packages.
This pioneering partnership between UrbanGeekz and Moovn will support both brands as they continue disrupting their respective industries.

New York, NY -- In a world where innovation and modernity often take center stage, there’s a timeless allure to the vintage and antique. Stepping into a show dedicated to these treasures is entering a realm where every piece has a story to tell, and every glance reveals a glimpse into history’s elegant past. Cue the NYC Spring Jewelry and Object Show (NYCJAOS). After a successful inaugural autumn edition, the new KIL Promotions spring show recently launched at the Metropolitan Pavilion.
Konstantinos I. Leoussis, show founder, renowned antique and vintage dealer, and bench jeweler, says, “I founded the show with a vision to reignite the passion for vintage and antique jewelry while fostering a welcoming environment for both budding collectors and seasoned enthusiasts.” Leoussis continues, “In today’s jewelry market, smaller businesses often face challenges, and many are adopting direct-to-consumer models. However, I wanted to create a space where individuals could experience the magic of vintage pieces firsthand, without intimidation. Our show is designed to be inclusive and inviting, encouraging attendees to explore, learn, and indulge in the rich history and exquisite craftsmanship of timeless treasures.”

To me, it means the end consumer is more educated and has a strong desire to see all that they can before deciding on their purchases, which might be a little overwhelming, but ultimately why a show like this is so important.”
KIL Promotions’ inaugural autumn show hosted 31 exhibitors, while the recent spring edition had a bustling showcase featuring 71 exhibitors, more than doubling in size. The exponential growth in vendor participation underscores the interest in the show and its growing appeal among vintage, antique, and contemporary watch, and jewelry enthusiasts. “KIL Promotions put on an amazing show and went out of their way to bring in dealers from the West Coast and abroad, so I think it was an extraordinary opportunity for New York show goers to experience a really diverse curation of jewelry and objects,” says Alison Barry, Owner of Duvenay. “The attendees seemed less interested in trends, and more into special antiques, historical pieces, and treasure hunting one-of-a-kind finds.”
David Alvarez, General Partner of Jacob’s Diamond and Estate Jewelry, reported his team was impressed by the large crowds of mainly younger women in their 20s-30s— sophisticated shoppers, genuinely interested in antique jewels. With a focus on cultivating the next generation of collectors, KIL Promotions welcomed a diverse crowd, encouraging a range of pricing, appealing to first-time show goers and jewelry connoisseurs alike.
Renowned jewelry author, journalist collector and dealer, Beth Bernstein says, “Some visitors who were purchasing for themselves came with very specific pieces in mind, and many

Contemporary designers included: KIL N.Y.C., Heavenly Vices, Erica Molinari, Circa 1700, Alex Streeter, Lily Streeter, GiGi Ferranti, Anne Baker, and K8 Jewelry. The world-leading antique, vintage, watch, and estate dealers at the show included Jewels by Grace, Duvenay, Alpha & Omega, Keyamour, Thea Grant, Spare Room Antiques, Jogani, Ishy Antiques, Lowther Antiques, Steve Fishman, Woodcliff on the Hudson, Jacob’s Diamond & Estate Jewelry, Jack Weirs & Sons, Courtville Antiques, Be Jeweled and more.
Before the show opened to the public, a VIP Early Viewing Party was held, where KIL Promotions successfully raised $3,200 in scholarship funds, to support local jewelry designers in their studies. Uplifting emerging talent, the company is dedicated to supporting talent entering the industry.
This summer, the new Tokyo Jewelry and Object Show will debut in Japan, also hosted by KIL Promotions. With customer service as a focal point of their shows, the company is committed to delivering an outstanding experience for both vendors and visitors. Ismael Khan of Ishy Antiques says, “We had an amazing time at the NYC spring show. We were so happy to see so many of our favorite dealers exhibiting alongside us and the amount of footfall was incredible. The way we are looked after is second to none, and we can’t wait for the next show!”

As we enter National Foster Care Awareness Month, it’s essential to shed light on the transformative power of fostering and adoption. While many of us are familiar with the concept of foster care, there’s often a lingering stigma or misconception surrounding it. Some may view foster care as a last resort or a daunting responsibility, overshadowed by fear and uncertainty. However, I’m here to challenge that narrative and urge us all to choose love over fear when it comes to fostering a child.
Fostering a child is not just an act of kindness; it’s a profound opportunity to make a lasting impact on a young life. It’s about providing stability, support, and unconditional love to children who need it most. And contrary to popular belief, foster care isn’t just for a select few with special qualifications or resources—it’s for anyone willing to open their hearts and homes.
One of the most significant barriers to fostering a child is fear—fear of the unknown, fear of attachment, fear of not being enough. But what if we reframed that fear into an opportunity for growth and connection? What if we viewed fostering as an act of courage rather than a burden? By choosing love over fear, we can break down these barriers and create a more compassionate world for children in need.
Moreover, let’s make foster care cool. Let’s celebrate the rappers, actors, athletes, and celebrities
who have spent time in foster care and gone on to achieve greatness. From Tiffany Haddish to Ice T, Pepa to Greg Louganis, Seal to Cher, Colin Kaepernick to Steve Jobs, Eddie Murphy, and many more, these individuals have defied the odds and thrived despite their challenging beginnings.
Their stories remind us that foster care isn’t a sentence—it’s a chapter in a much larger story. It’s a testament to resilience, strength, and the power of love to overcome adversity. And if they can turn their experiences into sources of inspiration and motivation, so can we.
So, let’s challenge ourselves to step out of our comfort zones and embrace foster care as a cool and compassionate choice. Let’s educate ourselves, dispel myths, and support families who choose to foster. Together, we can create a world where every child has a loving and stable home—a world where love triumphs over fear.
This National Foster Care Awareness Month, let’s choose love. Let’s choose compassion. Let’s choose foster care.
Thank you for your commitment to creating a brighter future for children in foster care.

(Culinary.net) A sizzling steak is a surefire sound of summer, and the flavors achieved from one that’s perfectly grilled are hard to match. Before you fire up your grill, consider these five basics for cooking a chef-worthy steak:
Taste preferences (and prices) may differ among sirloins, ribeyes, T-bones and more, but the way you prepare steaks likely won’t change much from cut to cut. You’ll want to trim the thickness down to 1/2-1 inch for proper cooking, and setting the meat out ahead of time allows it to warm to room temperature before hitting the grill. Placing a refrigerator-cool slab on hot grates works against you in two ways: first, the cold meat instantly chills your previously warm grill, and second, the inner portion of the steak will take longer to grill.
Feel free to add any spices that you prefer, but remember a good steak typically doesn’t
require fancy seasoning – a pinch of salt works just fine. Add your salt anywhere between 30 minutes to a few hours before grilling time to help retain moisture and improve flavor.
Grilling a steak correctly actually isn’t just about maintaining a sweltering flame. A twozone fire is usually the way to go – one side of the grill should be hot (using direct heat) with the other side not quite as warm (indirect heat). This allows you to create a sear over direct heat before finishing cooking through –without burning – over indirect heat.
Sear and Slide
Speaking of searing: Cooking your steak over direct heat 1-2 minutes on each side is
normally about right for creating a proper sear. At this point, depending on the thickness of your steak, you’ll want to check for doneness. If it’s not quite to the temperature you’re looking to achieve, simply slide it over to the indirect heat for a finishing touch.
Keep in mind these general guidelines for doneness: 120-125 F is rare, 130-135 F is medium-rare, 140-145 F is medium, 150-155 F is medium-well and 160-175 F is well done.
Finally, as hungry as you may be at this point, resting steaks is an important last step before diving in. Giving your steaks 5-10 minutes (foil or no foil) allows flavors to redistribute and moisture to be retained in the meat. Find more cooking tips and recipes at Culinary.net.
(StatePoint) So you’ve recently graduated college.
The summer ahead is the perfect time to consider a career as a financial planner. At a time when new research reveals that more than half of fouryear college graduates are underemployed a year after they graduate, the financial planning industry is booming.
To give yourself a competitive edge when you’re just starting out, consider earning your CFP® certification. CFP® certification is the standard in financial planning and paves the way for an exceptional career.
Here’s what you need to know about a career as a financial advisor with CFP® certification, also known as a CFP® professional:
great communication skills and a high level of emotional intelligence to guide clients through the psychology behind their money management.
• You can forge your own path: Financial advising is not a one-size-fits-all career path. You can choose to specialize in a particular area of finance or take a holistic approach to your clients’ needs. Where you work is also up to you — you might work at a nationally known financial services firm, a small local firm or even a bank or credit union. Because of the commitment to professional excellence and high ethical standards it demonstrates, gaining your CFP® certification will unlock even more career opportunities. Many CFP® professionals even start their own business early in their careers.
• You’ll be helping others: CFP® professionals build trusted relationships with their clients, helping people achieve their life goals, whether that’s buying a home, paying for their children’s college educations or preparing for retirement.
• You can design your own schedule: After four years of scheduling classes to suit your needs, the idea of rigid working hours may not be appealing. Fortunately, financial advising can come with scheduling flexibility and a good work-life balance.
• You’ll enjoy job security: Many industries are experiencing widespread layoffs and instability, but financial planning is a career path offering job security and growth. That’s difficult to do in industries with low starting wages. While financial planning salaries vary, you can expect to earn $50-70K as a starting point. And there’s a lot of room for growth — experienced financial advisors earn $192,000 on average.
• You’ll find support along the way: As you work toward CFP® certification, you’ll have many opportunities for ongoing support. An online candidate forum offers opportunities to connect with others on their path to certification. Other resources include a progress tracker, exam preparation tools, financial aid and three mentorship cycles a year that align with the exams offered. Additionally, the CFP Board’s Career Center can help you find your footing after you get certified. For more information about becoming a financial planner, visit CFP.net.
