Aspire Center to improve access to resources for Austin community
Continued from page 1
BY TIA CAROL JONES
Once opened, the Aspire Center will house Austin Coming Together, Westside Health Authority, BMO Bank, as well as the Jane Addams Resource Corporation. It will be located at 5500 W. Madison, the former site of Emmett Elementary School.
Emmett Elementary School closed in 2013. The building was acquired by Westside Health Authority in 2018. Since then, Austin Coming Together and Westside Health Authority have been working through planning and fundraising efforts to be able to raise the resources needed to build the center in the way the community envisioned.
“The center is a space to be able to help community residents gain access to employment training, as well as other supportive services they would need to be successful along their career path,” said Darnell Shields, Executive Director of Austin Coming Together.
According to Shields, the Aspire Initiative is a cradle to career continuum to bring significant investment to a concentrated area within the Austin community, bound by Madison Street and Chicago, Central and Laramie Avenues. The goal is to ensure community residents have access to what they need in order to thrive from early childhood to aging in place. The Aspire Initiative includes an education and wellness campus, led by ‘By the Hand Club’, a reimagining of Austin High School campus and Aspire Housing in addition to the Aspire Center for Workforce Innovation.
“All four of these projects make available and accessible for community residents the types of resources they need simultaneously to give them the opportunity to thrive in their community,” Shields said. The Austin Forward Together Quality of Life Plan listed all of these things as areas they wanted to address.
The community in developing the plan, looked beyond investment in programs and took into consideration investments that leveraged the built environment in terms of facilities necessary to house the resources and programs. The hope is the facilities and resources will move the community forward and past their impediments.
The total for the project is a little less than $41 million. Construction on the Aspire will take place this month. It is estimated to take 14-16 months and the anticipated completion date is 2024. The Aspire Center for Workforce Development is the first project of the Aspire Initiative. The hope is that once this project gets going that it will help catalyze the launch and start of the other projects.
Shields said the vision for the Austin community is for it to be a thriving community for its residents in a place where they can have access to all the opportunities they need to live above the Federal poverty line, not be in fear of the threat of crime, to have a stable housing market where there is ownership and have access to high quality education. He added, these are also the things individuals that live in the City of Chicago need to live a high-quality standard of life. He said in order to have the vision come into fruition, people will have to stay united.
“We’re stronger together and that’s why we’re Austin Coming Together, because our strength is in being united. It’s really about continuous collaboration between all the different stakeholders, resource providers, government agencies, these philanthropic and corporate entities. All of the different sectors really have to work together in order to be able to bring about the transformation that is needed in the community, along with the community,” he said, adding that it should be done for the community, but with the community. ART ON THE MART’S SUMMER SEASON FEATURES
NEW COMMISSIONS BY DESIGN FIRM GENSLER AND THE CHICAGO BLACK DANCE LEGACY PROJECT
CHICAGO, Ill. – ART on THE MART, an innovative digital art project that transforms a Chicago architectural landmark into a largerthan-life canvas, will introduce two new commissions this summer. Building Light, a new projection by Gensler, the largest global design and architecture firm, will kick off the summer season on June 8, followed by a projection featuring new choreography from the Chicago Black Dance Legacy Project, an organization celebrating and archiving Black Dance, on July 6. Timed to Chicago Pride Fest (June 17 to 18) and the Chicago Pride Parade (June 25), ART on THE MART’s seasonal Pride celebration will return from June 1 to 28, followed by its annual Independence
Day projection, which illuminates the building in red, white, and blue, from June 29 to July 5. Projections during the summer season will be on view nightly from 9 to 10 p.m. CT.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Gensler, a world-class design and architecture firm, on a new projection and usher in this bold new chapter for THE MART. It’s also an honor, alongside support from the Walder Foundation, to provide a stage for the remarkable dance companies that constitute the Black Dance Legacy Project. At once celebrating the power of design, dance and their impact on our community, we continue our legacy of commissioning works that uplift the creatives shaping our city,” said Cynthia Noble, executive director of ART on THE MART.

Designed by Anna Nelson and Franklin Guttman of Gensler’s Chicago brand studio, Building Light, on view from June 8 to September 13, explores themes of discovery, urbanism, and change through four abstracted and time-lapsed vignettes. Aimed to evoke optimism and wonder, Building Light speaks to what design can do for our communities and its ability to find creative solutions to society’s biggest challenges. An original soundscape from Gilded Audio, composed by Andy Chugg and Nick Dooley, will accompany the piece. Gensler is also behind the next phase of THE MART’s evolution, reimagining key spaces in one of Chicago’s most iconic architectural buildings. Gensler’s transformation of the building will create a new experience for all who enter, and the projection, planned to align with NeoCon 2023 (June 12 to 14), reinforces THE MART’s role as a true global destination for design.
of its summer season from July 6 to September 13. The Chicago Black Dance Legacy Project, developed through a partnership between the Logan Center for the Arts and the Joyce Foundation’s Culture Program, is a multi-year project that seeks to celebrate and strengthen the impact of Black dance in Chicago and beyond. Created by Princess Mhoon, Director of the Chicago Black Dance Legacy Project, new media artist Liviu Pasare, and artists from 10 diverse dance companies of the Chicago Black Dance Legacy Project, the projection for ART on THE MART, titled The Big Bang: Movement Theory + the Black Dancing Body, will feature original choreography from its latest cohort. Told in three acts, the work takes audiences on a journey through the Black experience in America by way of dance. Juxtaposing forms ranging from ballet, modern, tap, traditional African dance, Chicago-born footwork, and more, the commission will deliver an incomparable demonstration of the depth and breadth of Chicago’s Black dance community.
SOUTH SUBURBAN SENATORS CELEBRATE NEW AIRPORT
Forty years in the making, the South Suburban Airport is a step away from becoming reality, thanks to State Senator Napoleon Harris’ steadfast leadership to hold the state accountable. Harris and other members from the South Suburbs will celebrate how the accomplishment will generate job creation and local revenue for residents across Southern Cook and Will counties.
Celebratory political leader includes: State Senators Napoleon Harris (D-Harvey), Michael Hastings (D-Frankfort) and Patrick Joyce (D-Essex), as well as Pat Devaney of AFL-CIO
LEADER LIGHTFORD CHAMPIONS MEASURE TO EXPAND FULL-DAY KINDERGARTEN OPTIONS
Senate Majority Leader Kimberly A. Lightford successfully passed a measure to require the option for full-day kindergarten across the state.
“It is important that we create equal access to education on every level,” said Lightford (D-Maywood). “This measure will ensure all families in Illinois are provided with the same opportunities for their children early on.”
Parents who live in districts without the option of full-day kindergarten are often faced with additional barriers to preparing their children for early elementary school. These barriers include, but are not limited to, mid-day transportation, loss of income due to being home with the child or finding additional childcare, and ensuring developmentally appropriate activities are being provided throughout the day.

“Design touches many aspects of the human experience, especially in urban environments,” said Anna Nelson, Senior Brand Designer at Gensler and Building Light organizer. “Our team wanted to celebrate the power of design by depicting how individual discovery can morph into exponential impact. We’re speaking to the city as a future-thinking center of design with an aim to inspire Chicagoans and NeoCon attendees alike.”
Continuing a legacy of spotlighting work by leading Chicago-based artists and collectives, ART on THE MART will also present a newly commissioned work by the Chicago Black Dance Legacy Project as part
The dance companies featured in The Big Bang: Movement Theory + the Black Dancing Body include: The Chicago Multicultural Dance Center & Hiplet Ballerinas; Deeply Rooted Dance Theater; The Era Footwork Collective; Forward Momentum Chicago; Joel Hall Dancers & Center; M.A.D.D. Rhythms; Move Me Soul; Muntu Dance Theatre; NAJWA Dance Corps; and Praize Productions. Chicago-based DJ Duane Powell will also collaborate on a new soundtrack for the projection inspired by House music. The work is made possible, in part, by a grant awarded to the ART on THE MART Foundation funded by the Walder Foundation for advancing the performing arts in Chicago.
ART on THE MART is free and can best be experienced from the jetty section of the Chicago Riverwalk on Wacker Drive between Wells Street and Franklin Street, where accompanying audio can also be heard. ART on THE MART is presented in collaboration with the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE).

Currently, it is optional for school districts to offer full-day kindergarten. Lightford’s measure would provide full-day kindergarten options with developmentally appropriate play-based learning opportunities for families throughout the state.
“Full-day kindergarten provides families with comprehensive, stable learning environments so children can be prepared for the demands of early elementary school,” said Lightford. “Families in all corners of the state deserve to have that opportunity and option available to them.”
House Bill 2396 passed in the Senate on Wednesday.
SENATE APPROVES BELT MEASURE TO ENSURE FAIR COMPENSATION FOR TEACHERS
State Senator Christopher Belt passed a measure out of the Senate Wednesday that aims to ensure fair compensation for teachers and protect school boards from undue financial burdens.
“This measure empowers our state’s educators and recognizes the invaluable contributions they make every day,” said Belt (Swansea). “Not only would this enhance the financial well-being of teachers, but it also would contribute to maintaining the high standard of education in our schools across the state.”
House Bill 300 would establish the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability as the agency responsible for adjusting the teacher minimum salary in accordance with annual increases in inflation rates.
The legislation also addresses concerns related to potential higher pension contributions resulting from increased minimum teacher salaries. It would ensure that school boards would not be penalized for fulfilling their obligation to provide competitive compensation to teachers.
“The elements in this measure promote fairness, stability and excellence in education,” said Belt. “By prioritizing fair compensation for our teachers and supporting school boards, we are making a profound investment in the future of our state.”
House Bill 300 passed the Senate.

Small Business Owners – Catalysts for Economic Growth
SPONSORED CONTENT FROM JPMORGAN CHASE & CO.
Almost half of all U.S. employees work for small businesses, defined as companies with fewer than 500 employees, and a staggering 99 percent of all U.S. companies fall under the “small business” designation, according to the Small Business Association. Entrepreneurship can be a steppingstone to wealth generation. In recent years, however, small business owners have faced many challenges, and that’s particularly true for those in majority Black, Hispanic and Latino communities. Fortunately, data is showing a strong trend toward improvement and normalization.
Many small businesses have more cash than they did before the pandemic, notably the smallest businesses with less than $100,000 in annual revenue. With more than two-thirds of small businesses expecting increased revenue and sales this year, they’re planning to put that money back into their workforce, to hire and retain employees by increasing wages and offering upskilling and training opportunities, according to JPMorgan Chase’s Business Leaders Outlook survey.
Black, Hispanic and Latino small business owners in particular say they’re optimistic about the year ahead, and the number of new businesses formed in cities like Chicago is at an all-time high – in Chicago, new business formation is up 64% over the last three years.
“Minority-owned businesses are fueling the U.S. economy – driving growth, innovation and job creation,” said Mikal Quarles, head of Chase Business Banking Racial Equity Strategies. “It’s important that we provide them with tools, resources and network capital to help them take their business to the next level and create and sustain wealth long-term.”
Citing access to capital as one of the top barriers for small businesses, banks play a critical role as catalyst in small business success. Over the last few years, JPMor-
gan Chase has doubled-down on its commitment to help minority-owned business succeed, including through its $30 billion Racial Equity Commitment that seeks to help close the racial wealth gap, such as through new mentorship programs, events, and expanded access to credit for business owners.
Small business owners have a plethora of resources and information available to help them at any stage of their business. Whether it’s looking for guidance on how to start or grow a small business, or access financial tools, here are some important steps to consider:
• Starting a business: Prospective owners can consider a few important foundational pieces, including writing a business plan, establishing a business bank account and applying for and filing the right permits and licenses. Also, prospective business owners should think through their business structure – will they be a sole proprietor, operate an LLC or choose another structure? Gathering funds and deciding where to do business are two more key steps to take before finally launching a company.
• Growing a business: As business owners continue to generate revenue, they can shift their focus to growing and scaling their business. Future financing plans could include applying for additional loans, grants or investor funding. Business banking accounts can be leveraged to help meet the goals of a business owner.
Forging ahead: If a business owner has a few years of success under their belt, they can discover new ways to optimize their business and streamline operations. That includes keeping cash flow healthy, continuing to build their customer base, and looking for digital tools to help simplify processes like invoicing and payments. Small business owners can also access new tools designed to help lower the barrier to entry to accessing capital and the tools needed to set them up for success. Last year, JPMorgan Chase introduced a Special Purpose Credit Program to help expand credit access in majority Black, Hispanic and Latino communities for business owners who otherwise might not be approved or receive it on less favorable terms.
JPMorgan Chase also expanded its free one-on-one coaching program to 45 trained senior business consultants in 21 U.S. cities, where they’re providing mentoring and advice to Hispanic, Latino and Black business owners within the community on everything from boosting creditworthiness to managing cash flow to effective marketing.
“We’re changing the lens of how we define business success by integrating new practices and products that drive more equitable outcomes,” said Carolina Jannicelli, head of JPMorgan Chase’s Community Impact division, which facilitates the firm’s Racial Equity Commitment. “Our commitment is simply a starting point that is transforming our overall work as a company, driving business and more inclusive economic growth.”

59FIFTY Day Celebrates Global Influence of New Era’s Iconic Cap
BUFFALO, N.Y., PRNewswire
-- It’s the official cap of Major League Baseball, the National Football League and National Basketball Association. It’s a cultural icon that has been celebrated in music, featured on screen and stage, and graced runways and red carpets.
New Era Cap released special caps in the week leading up to 59FIFTY Day in celebration of the iconic 59FIFTY. The releases will include New Era branded headwear, pins and clips along with special releases of retro 1954 designs, reflecting the year the 59FIFTY was invented and featuring select MLB, NFL and NBA teams.
“New Era took a simple piece of baseball uniform, the baseball cap, and created a globally recognized, iconic product that has become a staple in fashion, culture and sports,” said Mark Maidment, Senior Vice President Brand at New Era Cap. “Authentic to its core, the 59FIFTY fitted cap is a cultural touchpoint; it has been a canvas for creativity, self-expression and team affiliation for over half a century. The iconic nature of this product and the creativity it inspires has forged a fashion-forward movement that is changing the way we think about the influence of sport and its relationship to culture and fashion. This fitted cap, with its instantly recognizable gold visor sticker, has connected people in countries all around the world, building a 59FIFTY Cap community of followers, collectors and sport fans.”
It started in 1954 when Harold Koch, son of company founder Ehrhardt Koch, envisioned a more contemporary design for the original professional baseball caps. His innovative design included a 22-step production process that injected more style into the cap, including strengthening the visor stitching and creating stiffer crowns suited for more defined logos.
The 59FIFTY was born.
The result not only changed what ballplayers were wearing – it became part of the creative movement of streetwear, which adopted New Era’s design, incorporating the 59FIFTY into its fashion-driving, sneaker-pairing style.
Among those celebrating the iconic look is Set Free Richardson, the founder and force behind Compound, who directed a video for 59FIFTY Day.
“I wanted to create a spot that showed that we are all on a team! Either that’s a sports team, family, group or a job, we all play for someone,” Set Free said. “As we celebrate 59FIFTY, I wanted to show that all walks of life can celebrate their team with their own style!
New Jewelry Brand, ZAM Jewelry, Telling People To “Shut Up”
LOS ANGELES, PRNewswire -- Launched in March 2023, ZAM Jewelry is a black-owned, women-owned business creating bold jewelry in eye-catching designs inspired by a passion for expression and women empowerment. The Los Angeles-based brand prioritizes affordability, craftsmanship, and environmental business practices.
“I wanted to create a brand that allows women to be bold no matter what age they are,” said Esi “Magic” Mensah, ZAM Jewelry Founder. “There is this notion that once you become an adult, you’re supposed to tone down what you wear, how you dress, and even what you say. Essentially, you go from fun costume jewelry to boring higher-quality jewelry. I don’t believe in that, so I created ZAM Jewelry to be the exact opposite of that, bold and expressive but still with quality materials.”
ZAM Jewelry sells statement jewelry of earrings, rings, and necklaces such as the best-selling “SHUT UP” ring that has the right amount of bold, and the “CLAWS OUT” earrings representing the ability to be ready to use them.
The brand found the most skilled jewelry artisans to bring its vision to life partnering with jewelry artisans in Thailand to ensure the highest quality for customers. Thai craftspeople have been making desirable jewelry for centuries, and gold and silver jewelry manufacturing is a vital component of Thailand’s economy.
The brand leans into its mission to better protect the planet and create jewelry ethically by utilizing recycled sterling silver in its pieces to decrease the brand’s environmental impact; all materials meet safety standards and are free of dangerous chemicals. Available in gold and silver options, the 18K gold vermeil provides a striking yellow-gold look and is made with a plating thickness of 2.5 microns. Silver jewelry is plated with either Rhodium or an anti-tarnish solution to make it long-lasting.
Hats off to New Era for letting me tell a visual story in celebrating 59FIFTY Day!”
The caps in the 59FIFTY Day collection include five new New Era branded designs with special pins and clips available in stores and online.
New Era will also launch new MLB, NFL and NFL collections for 59FIFTY Day. The MLB and NFL caps feature historic logos of teams from the 1954 season – the year the 59FIFTY was born. The NBA collection features select current NBA logos on classic-colored caps, and a special MLB headwear collection delivers a 100 percent genuine leather cap design using MLB Cooperstown logos from select teams of the 1954 season.

Corporate Leaders, Environmental and Energy Experts Highlight Sustainability Challenges, Resources and Opportunities at Chicago Urban League’s 2023 SUMMIT
CHICAGO – On Tuesday, May 2, the Chicago Urban League convened nearly 350 business and civic leaders for its 2023 SUMMIT, a daylong conference focused on “Equity in Clean Energy and Water.” Over the course of the day, more than 20 industry experts and corporate leaders shared insights and useful information about addressing environmental and sustainability inequities ranging from access to affordable, renewable energy to safe drinking water, and employment diversity.
SUMMIT 2023 was the League’s first to focus on energy and environmental equity. The day’s agenda included three plenary conversations, along with six breakout sessions that focused on specific topics such as federal contracting, financing, and opportunities in water and infrastructure projects.
“Each year, our SUMMIT aims to lift up a policy issue that is of importance to the Black community. While those issues may also be of interest to the general community, we know there is often a greater impact for Black communities. Such is the case with environmental justice,” said Karen Freeman-Wilson, President and CEO of the Chicago Urban League. “This year, we set out to talk about access to clean air, clean water, and the opportunity to be engaged in workforce and business opportunities around tangible solutions.”
In addition to focusing on policy issues, SUMMIT is one of the Chicago Urban League’s major annual fundraisers. This year’s top sponsors included GCM Grosvenor and ITW. More information about upcoming programs and events from the Chicago Urban League can be found at ChiUL.org.

MGM+ Announces a Greenlight for the Docuseries ‘Hollywood Black’
Black PR Wire LOS ANGELES — MGM+, a premium linear channel and streaming service, announced a greenlight for the docuseries Hollywood Black, from Justin Simien’s Culture Machine, Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi’s Significant Productions, and the Academy Award-winning creative production company RadicalMedia. Based on the book by historian Donald Bogle, this four-part docuseries—directed by Justin Simien (Dear White People), whose upcoming Disney film Haunted Mansion will be released this summer—tells the epic story of the actors, writers, directors, and producers who fought for their place on the page, behind the camera, on the screen, and in the credits. It is a definitive chronicle of a century of the Black experience in Hollywood, and a powerful reexamination of a quintessentially American story—in brilliant color.
“We are thrilled to work with Justin Simien, Jeffrey Schwarz, RadicalMedia, and to expand our prolific creative partnership with Forest and Nina,” said Michael Wright, head of MGM+. “Hollywood Black, like other recent MGM+ docuseries, is an entertaining and thoughtful look at a vital part of American culture, examining the evolution of Black cinema and the talented artists who built it. It is a timely and relevant look at the Black experience in Hollywood.”
“Hollywood, like many American industries, was built on Black culture and Black talent, even though it excluded Black people from many of its origin stories,” said Justin Simien. “This series seeks to illuminate present-day controversies, from #OscarSoWhite to the almost regular
‘blackface reveal’ of prominent white celebrities, told through the lens of Black individuals throughout Hollywood history. It’s the most important story I’ve been able to tell to date, on such a large scale, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to tell it with this team.”
“We love collaborating with visionary filmmakers, so it’s an honor to team up with Justin Simien/Culture Machine and Radical Media on Hollywood Black, especially alongside such immense support from Michael Wright and MGM+,” said Forest Whitaker. “Through this meaningful exploration of Black history in cinema, we’re excited to celebrate its future.”
Culture Machine’s Justin Simien (Dear White People, Bad Hair) and Kyle Laursen, Significant Productions’ Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi (Godfather of Harlem), and RadicalMedia’s Dave Sirulnick, Stacey Reiss, Jon Kamen (Summer of Soul) and Jeffrey Swartz will all serve as executive producers. Amy Goodman Kass is showrunner, and Simien is set to direct. The docuseries will be internationally distributed by MGM.
Hollywood Black is the latest addition to MGM+’s library of acclaimed docuseries, including Amityville: An Origin Story, Murf the Surf, Emmy-nominated Laurel Canyon, Helter Skelter, Slow Burn, My Life as a Rolling Stone, NFL Icons, and Blumhouse’s Compendium of Horror.
Culture Machine is a production company dedicated to inclusive content from marginalized voices poised to disrupt, activate and electrify popular culture. Culture Machine produced all four seasons of Justin Simien’s GLAAD- and Gotham Independent Film award-nominated
series Dear White People on Netflix, adapted from Simien’s own Sundance Jury Prize-winning feature film. Culture Machine is currently producing the Flashdance series reboot for Paramount+ with Simien set to direct a contemporary take on the classic Paramount Pictures film. Culture Machine is also producing the series adaptation of Image Comics’ best-selling comic Geiger created by Geoff Johns & Gary Frank for Paramount. Their slate also includes Plan A from writer Steven J. Kung for Starz and with Lionsgate Television.
Co-founded by producing partners Forest Whitaker & Nina Yang Bongiovi, Significant Productions is committed to creating opportunities for underrepresented narratives and storytellers by championing films and television shows starring people of color, alongside diversified representation behind the camera.
Significant Productions has produced critically acclaimed, culturally significant motion pictures by auteur filmmakers, including Fruitvale Station (2013) by Ryan Coogler, Dope (2015) by Rick Famuyiwa, Songs My Brothers Taught Me (2015) by Chloe Zhao, Roxanne Roxanne (2018) by Michael Larnell, Sorry to Bother You (2018) by Boots Riley, and A Kid from Coney Island (2020) by Coodie & Chike. Passing, Rebecca Hall’s directorial debut (based on Nella Larsen’s novel of the same name) was released globally on Netflix in the fall of 2021, yielding four BAFTA nominations in 2022. Earlier this year, Significant launched Fancy Dance by Erica Tremblay and To Live and Die by Qasim Basir at Sundance, which both debuted to rave reviews. Notably, all eight narrative features produced by Nina & Forest premiered at Sundance Film Festival, and went on to garner over 90 wins and over 300 nominations throughout awards circuits.
Forest and Nina also serve as executive producers on the premium TV series “Godfather of Harlem,” which just aired its third season on MGM+, and the pair continues to support inclusive storytelling within the television realm through its first-look deal at Amazon Studios.

CCRM Fertility Establishes ‘Black Fertility Matters’ Fund to Advocate and Advance Fertility for Black Communities
DENVER, PRNewswire -- CCRM Fertility is proud to launch the CCRM Fertility Black Fertility Matters Fund – a program dedicated to providing impactful resources that will increase access and advocacy for Black women and families navigating their fertility journeys. Studies* show Black women may be twice as likely to experience infertility than White women, and that close to half of Black women report their physicians do not understand their cultural background when seeking fertility treatment. CCRM Fertility created this multi-year commitment to extend its world-class expertise and care to the Black community, and to break down cultural and historical barriers around Black maternal health and fertility through continued education, encouragement, and empowerment for years to come.
Since its founding in 1987, CCRM Fertility continues to provide the most advanced fertility research and treatments, and consistently invests in leading technologies and achieves some of the highest in vitro fertilization (IVF) live birth rates in the U.S. With deep expertise in IVF, fertility testing, fertility preservation, genetic testing, third-party reproduction, and egg donation, by bridging world-class care with exceptional convenience, its national network of leading fertility doctors offers a personalized approach to all patients.
“Through the Black Fertility Matters Fund, we are aiming to align ourselves with community advocates and organizations that are actively doing the work to shift the cultural narrative and stigmas associated with infertility and family-building with fertility treatments in the Black community,” says CCRM Fertility CEO Bob LaGalia. “As a global leader in fertility care and treatment, we want to do everything in our power to be a part of those efforts, and to extend our own resources to increase our reach and ultimately our impact in helping Black women and families achieve their family planning
goals and dreams.”
By offering meaningful support and making treatment more accessible to the Black community through the Black Fertility Matters Fund, CCRM Fertility will tap into their national network of leading fertility doctors, advanced fertility research and patient success stories to spark meaningful conversations around the social disparities impacting Black fertility.
“As a Black woman working in reproductive endocrinology, I have personally witnessed the challenges that many Black women and others in the BIPOC community face when navigating their own fertility journeys. These challenges range from mistrust of physicians to concerns about egg donor diversity and maternal health complications, to cultural and community stigmas that often make this topic taboo,” says Dr. Stephanie Thompson, a reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist at The Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science, a proud member of the CCRM Fertility network. “This is why I am so deeply passionate and excited about CCRM Fertility’s commitment to advocating and supporting fertility issues that directly impact the Black community. Within the virtual event, Lockley and Dr. Styer discuss how to empower yourself during your fertility journey, ways to navigate and demystify the process, disparities for women of color in fertility treatments and patient support for the diagnosis of infertility – and more.
