2 NEWS briefly MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY ENCOURAGES FAMILIES TO CELEBRATE SCIENCE ALL SUMMER LONG

The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago (MSI) is continuing its long-standing tradition of supporting summer learning and encouraging excitement in science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STEAM) outside of classroom with the distribution of 5,000 curiosity kits at 150 locations. Each Curiosity Kit will include four or five curated hands-on activities for children ages 8 to 13, with instructions in English and Spanish, that will encourage them to engage with and explore STEAM content. The first set of kits, “MSI Curiosity Kits: Observation” are designed to encourage scientific observation with observation journals and mindfulness activities. The kits will be available in late June at roughly 150 locations, primarily in the city of Chicago within geographic areas that have been underserved. These locations include all 81 branches of the Chicago Public Library and select Chicago Park District locations. The Park District will also be using these kits in their summer programming. “The Curiosity Kits are a great way spark interest and excitement in STEAM subjects outside of the classroom during summer break, said Rex Babiera, ITW Director of Professional Learning. “Our goal is to find ways, like the curiosity kits, to bring science to kids, wherever they are, and help them hit the ground running once school is back in session.” To help build bridges between youth and science inside and outside of the classroom each summer, MSI’s team of science educators design fun, hands-on experiments for kids of all ages using items commonly found at home to encourage curiosity along with the kits. Last year, MSI was able to distribute a total of 3,400 Summer Brain Games kits at 120 locations throughout the city, with 87% of pick-up sites being on Chicago’s South, Southwest and West Sides. For more information on the kits, including pickup locations, and ideas for hands-on learning at home, families can contact Rex Babiera at scienceclubs@ msichicago.org.

BEAUTY FOR ASHES: THE BEAUTY OF BRONZEVILLE RISES

QCDC has been building commerce and a stronger community in the Bronzeville neighborhood for 19 years As headline news focuses on gun violence in Chicago, Illinois, and across the United States, Chicago’s Bronzeville community recently witnessed beauty for ashes with the grand openings of CBQ Facial Beauty Bar, the Sarah Kuenyefu Collection and Fourtune House Art Center, as they joined the newly opened Bronzeville Winery. This beauty was experienced with the tantalization of all five senses - sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch - as one approached the 4400 Block of South Cottage Grove, beautiful aromas permeated the atmosphere with the added bonus of the one-year anniversary celebration of the Haji Healing Salon. QCDC Executive Director, Rhonda McFarland declared, “QCDC is proud to have successfully recruited and curated a set of strong community-based African and African American business owners for the 4400 Retail Collective, which is now a national model for mixed-use development.” The intergenerational business owners are visible examples of Chicago’s Black Excellence and not just community development, but a village steeped in cultural pride and community sustainability. The soft openings of CBQ Facial Beauty Bar and Sarah Kuenyefu Collection, and the millennial and GenZ program and panel on Arts and Culture hosted by Fourtune House Art Center were nothing short of phenomenal! “CHICAGO MOVES” PROVIDES RELIEF TO NEARLY 45,000 RESIDENTS IN FIRST TWO WAVES OF LOTTERY SELECTIONS CHICAGO — Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot has announced that approximately 10,000 gas cards have been distributed or are awaiting pickup at City Hall. An additional 25,000 transit cards and 10,000 gas cards will soon be in the hands of qualified applicants in the coming weeks. The cards are distributed through Chicago Moves, a financial assistance program aimed at providing financial relief for Chicago residents struggling with transportation expenses. “The robust response to our Chicago Moves program demonstrates the vast need for this kind of assistance,” said Mayor Lightfoot. “People are experiencing economic hardship due to the skyrocketing inflation and the cost of gas, but the City is committed to providing continued financial relief to combat these challenging times. I’m grateful for all of the work that went into Chicago Moves helping our residents to make a living, enjoy our summer, and keep Chicago moving.” Just over a month after Mayor Lightfoot launched Chicago Moves, the City’s $12.5M transit relief response to spiking gas costs and rising inflation, 90,000 Chicagoans have already submitted applications to receive a gas or transit card. Selected participants have the choice to receive their card through the mail or to pick it up from a designated

location. William Bullion, a director for a local theatre company, received the first Chicago Moves gas card, valued at $150, during a visit to the 39th ward by Mayor Lightfoot and Jennie Huang Bennett, Chief Financial Officer at the City of Chicago. The next round of recipients will be selected during a lottery scheduled in the first week of July. Previous lottery recipients were selected the first week of May and June. To be eligible Chicagoans must be at least 18 years old, meet average or below average income criteria, have a valid email and live in the City of Chicago. Gas card applicants must also have a valid and current city sticker. If an eligible applicant is not selected, their entry is carried over and included in each subsequent gas or transit card lottery. Applications will be accepted through September 1st and Chicago residents can apply online at chicago.gov/ChicagoMoves, or fill out a paper application at any Chicago Public Library, although online application will allow for faster processing. Applicants can only apply for one of the prepaid gas cards or prepaid transit cards, and applications are limited to one per household. Residents can select whether they would like their card mailed or made available for pick-up at City Hall.

POLITICAL AFFAIRS

FOSTER INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO REDUCE STUDENT LOAN FINANCIAL BURDEN ON PARENTS

Recently, Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) introduced the Parents PLUS Loan Fairness and Responsibility Act. This legislation would allow students to take over the student debt that was incurred on their behalf, providing a sensible solution for parents facing multiple financial burdens. Specifically, the legislation would allow parents to transfer Parents PLUS loans to the student with the consent of the parent, student and lender, provided the student meets the credit requirements for the PLUS loan program and is at least six months removed from leaving school. After transfer, the loan would be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. “As college costs and economic burdens continue to rise, federal law should allow families to determine financial liability for PLUS loans in a way that accommodates their financial situation,” said Foster. “This legislation would provide a common-sense solution by allowing a child, if they’re willing, to take financial responsibility for the loans that allowed them to go to college.” The Parents PLUS Loan Fairness and Responsibility Act is endorsed by the National Education Association.

NEW BELT LAW BANS BURNING TOXIC CHEMICALS IN ILLINOIS

Burning toxic synthetic chemicals will be banned thanks to a measure sponsored by State Senator Christopher Belt that was signed into law Wednesday. “PFAS can harm people and the environment,” said Belt (D-Swansea). “This initiative stems from concerns that our neighbors have surrounding the waste incinerator in Sauget, which puts Metro East residents at risk of exposure to these harmful substances.” The new law bans incinerating materials covered under the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Toxic Release Inventory that contain perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as PFAS. Thermal oxidation for the purposes of pollution control, combustion of gases at landfills, medical waste incinerators and byproducts generated by municipal wastewater treatment facilities are exempted.

MARTWICK KICKS OFF SUMMER READING PROGRAM TO KEEP STUDENTS ENGAGED

Chicago - To encourage young people to continue learning during the summer, State Senator Robert Martwick is launching a Summer Reading Club for students on Chicago’s Northwest side. “The love of reading when I was young helped me get to where I am today,” said Martwick (D- Chicago). “Even though the school year will soon be over, participating in this reading club will keep kids sharp and creative during their summer break.” Students should fill out the brochure with the books they’ve read throughout the summer that they’ve checked out from their local library. Students from the library with the most entries will win a pizza party. Senator Martwick’s office will also be dropping off brochures at local libraries. The deadline to mail or deliver completed brochures to Senator Martwick’s district office is August 11. “We are fortunate to have amazing public libraries in our communities,” Martwick said. “This summer reading club will encourage families to take their kids to visit our public libraries in Chicago and in the Northwest suburbs and take advantage of the wonderful books they have to offer.” Visit https://senatormartwick.com/ to download and print the form. Parents can also call Martwick’s district office at 773 286-1115 to pick up a print copy or learn more information. The Veolia Environmental Services waste incinerator in Sauget will now be prohibited from incinerating firefighting foams, a product that often contains PFAS chemicals. “I’d like to thank Leader Greenwood for championing this in the House,” Belt said. “We worked on this measure for over a year and I’m proud that we are able to prioritize Metro East residents.” The new law takes effect immediately.

LĀ SOL Collective Launches a Bold New CLEAR Zinc Sunscreen NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., PRNewswire -- Are you worried about toxic chemicals in the sunscreen you use for your yourself and your family? Did you know that sunscreens can be harmful to your health and also to the environment? Two moms from Orange County, CA are looking to change all that with a product they’ve designed that is clearly a step above other mineral-based sunscreens. LĀ SOL Collective is now accepting orders. “It took me two years to find the right lab and formula that had all the attributes: made in the USA, non-toxic, clean ingredients, non-greasy, minimal white cast, all while also being paraben-free, gluten-free, fragrance-free, and cruelty-free,” said Staci Barrett, co-founder of LĀ SOL. “For too long, I’ve worried about the sunscreen available to my family – and became very frustrated when my kids refused to use traditional mineral-based sunscreens that left a heavy white cast.” So, why mineral sunscreen? Simple. It’s better for you! Unlike toxic chemical sunscreens, which absorb into your skin and then absorb the sun’s rays, mineral sunscreens sit on the surface of your skin, deflecting the sun’s rays like a shield. Also, did you know… 14 tons of sunscreen ends up in the ocean each year? Mineral-based sunscreen excludes toxic chemicals like Oxybenzone, which has been LĀ SOL Collective known to absorb into coral reefs causing bleaching and harming marine life. Various US states and foreign countries have, or are considering, banning sunscreens with harsh chemicals. LĀ SOL sunscreen protects your skin from the sun’s harmful rays in a healthy way for you AND the environment. Why LĀ SOL? The main drawback of zinc sunscreens has always been in the application and texture of the product – typical mineral-zinc sunscreens leave a heavy white cast on your skin. LĀ SOL CLEAR sunscreen works for all skin tones, gives your body the protection it needs, plus goes on like a smooth cream, leaving your skin feeling natural, not greasy. LĀ SOL Collective is committed to clean, good-for-you ingredients – that are equally good for the environment… it’s a win-win. “My boys would run away from me when I pulled out the sunscreen before their soccer games,” said Angela Dunning, co-founder of LĀ SOL. “No one wants to have a sticky, white film that drips down their faces during sports games and other activities. I needed a sunscreen that they would put on themselves without parental supervision.” For additional information and full ingredient list, visit our website: www.lasolcollective.com.

Having launched her own hair care company, PATTERN, in 2018, Ross will amplify the non-profit’s mission of helping other Black Woman owned businesses flourish through a community of support and resources. On Friday, June 10, Ross and BFABW Founder Nikki Porcher sat down together at H&M’s Los Angeles showroom to have a candid discussion about the challenges and successes Black Woman encounter as business owners. Joined by members of the Buy From a Black Woman (BFABW) community and surrounded by a display of products from member businesses, Ross

and Porcher delved into topics such as starting your own business, strengthening a network of Black women business owners, and how Black women are often called to create their own path to fill a need that is often unrecognized by corporations. Ross, herself a talented multihyphenate with years of experience in entertainment and business, gave words of wisdom and advice to young Black women seeking to achieve their own goals in a world where they may not always be seen. “I am proud to help support Buy From a Black Woman and the incredible network of business owners they’ve brought together,” says Ross. “Black women and their contributions are often overlooked, which is why it’s crucial for us to come together to build, strengthen and create our own opportunities for success.” Buy From a Black Woman is a non-profit organi-

zation founded in 2016 by Nikki Porcher that connects hundreds of Black Woman-owned businesses across the United States and provides a community of support with the goal of helping their businesses flourish. Throughout 2021, H&M sponsored events like the Buy From A Black Woman Inspire Tour and the BFABW Holiday Market which ran November through December 2021 at H&M’s Times Square location. These events, which saw products from over 50 Black Woman owned businesses sold at H&M locations across the country, exposed new customers to these Buy From a Black Woman member businesses and business owners. “It’s hard to describe in words what it means to have Tracee Ellis Ross as an ambassador for Buy From A Black Woman. This year we are celebrating and showing the world that Black Women are living examples.

Citizen’s 2022

Primary Endorsements The Primary Election in Illinois is next Tuesday, June 28, 2022, and it is a pivotal one in our history. Choosing proper representation is important in an environment where we face pandemics, drug epidemics, gun violence, car jackings, food shortages and health disparities. Now is the time for us to act and make the changes that we so desperately need. Over the past several weeks we have utilized our podcast and newspaper platforms to introduce some newcomers and for other candidates making an appears we simply wanted to remind you of their track records. Although some of the candidates featured were first timers in the political arena, their ideas of changing issues that plague our neighborhoods was enough to sit down and listen to what they had to say. During that same process we talked to candidates who have already served in some political compacity and have a track record that will not only qualify them for the seat they seek but it shows they will go to work on day one for their constituents. During this election process we must keep in mind the works and promises of those we elected and re-elect to represent us. If they don’t work replace them, and that is what an election season brings. We must hold them accountable. On Tuesday, get out to the polls and vote your choice and be the change that you want to see We encourage you to put in the work necessary to elect the best candidate who can and will go to work on day one. With that said we gladly present our 2022 Primary endorsements in several races.

Governors’ Choice for Illinois

JB PRITZKER

Pritzker has served as Governor of the State of Illinois since January of 2019. In his tenure as Governor, he made the largest investment in state history to upgrade Illinois infrastructure rebuilding and replacing roads, bridges, rail, broadband and schools. Each year Governor Pritzker has been able to pass a balanced budget and canceled out a billion-dollar bill paying backlog. He improved the states credit rating, created jobs, and made secondary education more affordable to anyone desiring to further their education. The governor signed into law in 2020 one of the country’s highly debated issues, “The Illinois Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act making Illinois the 11th State in the Union to legalize the sales of medical and recreational Marijuana. Also, in 2020 the country was hit by the largest healthcare crisis ever seen on American soil, COVID. The Governor shut down the state to keep the residents across the State of Illinois safe. Did all agree to the shutdown “No”, but fewer lives were lost because of those measures. We understand that setting a plan for what you will do if elected is just part of the race. But when an elected official takes office and executes and deliver on most of the plans promised then that is a clear sign

that they are willing to seriously work for all people and not a few select. We are happy to say that we are endorsing the incumbent in the race for Governor in the State of Illinois and believe that he will finish what he promised. If not he and anyone running must be held accountable.

Cook County Board President

TONI PRECKWINKLE Preckwinkle is no stranger to County government. Although, during her last term she faced much opposition from voters and even from County board members within her own administration about a bill she sponsored implementing a surge of taxes to be added on sugary drinks. Shortly after the customers started to see the increase at the checkout counter, the failed sugar tax became a thing of the past. In her power as President of Cook County Board Toni has worked to improve County government so it works for the people. Here’s what she’s done lately as the current Cook County Board President: Allocated resources to the community from the $1 billion CARES ACT that Cook County received from the Federal Government. The Guaranteed Income Pilot, which consists of a two-year investment in individuals and families and is believed to be the largest guaranteed income program in the country. The Cook County government is putting $12 million in helping people take care of medical debt. In addition to that there will be a $240 million investment in Provident Hospital. Funds will allow for upgrades of the existing facility, investing in a new emergency room and medical equipment. The Black and Brown communities across the County face many challenges and disparities and this investment speaks to the issue of change. Although there’s much work to be done, this gesture shows that the current administration is listening and willing to move the needle on improving the quality of life for the people in the County. Now we know that the County government is listening to our voices, and they are putting in the work that shows change. We think that Toni Preckwinkle deserves a 4th term as Cook County Board President.

Secretary of the State of Illinois –

DAVID MOORE Moore has been an Alderman for the 17th Ward since 2015. Moore wants to do his part to fight crime after becoming the next Secretary of the State of Illinois if elected. He will add digital license plates, which could curb carjackings as the technology would record the car’s location and mark the car as stolen for other drivers to see. He also wants to create Secretary of State satellite offices at libraries to alleviate crowding at its current facilities. Moore wants to create 122 youth engagement offices at every Driver’s facility throughout the State of Illinois giving them access to jobs and other related resources. He believes whether as a private citizen or public official, that there is no job is too small or too large for him to tackle to improve the lives of neighbors and constituents—both locally and statewide.

Cook County Commissioner, 5th District –

VERNARD L. ALSBERRY, JR. Alsberry has been the President of the Village of Hazel Crest for almost nine years. Alsberry began his political career as an elected official in Hazel Crest serving as a trustee for eight years. In 2018, South Suburban Hospital built a $98 million surgical center in Hazel Crest. Alsberry has been able to build relationships with other municipalities, as well as leaders on the State and Federal level. Those relationships are important for growth as the Southland’s economic development opportunities continue to expand. Alsberry’s track record has earned him this endorsement. Her ability to pass important legislation and secure money for the areas she represents are key things that translates into her readiness to work for the people in Congress. Dowell believes she is the only candidate in the race that has real direct results for people. She thinks of herself as an action-oriented, results-driven person, someone who wants to see movement forward from one place to another. That is something Dowell believes is necessary in a place like the 1st District, which has not seen its fair share of federal resources and has been marginalized in many cases. MCA CHICAGO ANNOUNCES NEW EXHIBITION FEATURING CHICAGO-BASED ARTIST GREGORY BAE CHICAGO – The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is thrilled to announce the opening of Chicago Works: Gregory Bae. The exhibition will be on view from Tuesday, June 28, through Sunday, Jan. 29, in the Sternberg and Rabin galleries on the museum’s third floor. A public opening reception will take place at the museum from 1 to 3 p.m . Saturday, July 9. The exhibition is organized by Nolan Jimbo, Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow. Bae’s kinetic sculptures, drawings, and videos undertake the romantic yet futile project of pausing time, imagining the possibility of resisting the forces of aging, decay, and separation. Throughout the exhibition, everyday objects loop, stutter, or fail: a tire spins atop a treadmill, clocks tick in place, and acrylic frames preserve torn sheets of paper. Meticulously rendered landscapes also appear within Bae’s work, which attempts to overcome distances both physical and cultural. In particular, translation and travel between the United States and South Korea are recurrent themes throughout the show. “Chicago Works: Gregory Bae gathers a focused selection of Bae’s work, which melds the language of conceptual art with urgent discussions related to race and the limits of representation. While the artist’s work speaks in the broadest terms of time and space, it subtly alludes to his personal experience as a first-generation Korean American, moving seamlessly between the universal and the culturally specific,” says Nolan Jimbo, Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow. The first solo museum presentation of Bae’s work, the show is part of the MCA’s Chicago Works exhibition series, which spotlights Chicago-based artists who are shaping the local contemporary art scene. “Over the past decade, the Chicago Works series has served as a platform for the city’s most experimental artistic practices, reflecting the diversity of Chicago’s artist communities and the rigor of the work made here. Chicago Works: Gregory Bae spotlights Bae’s meticulously crafted conceptual projects, which contemplate the poetics of time and distance through

a diasporic lens. In light of the artist’s recent passing, we hope this exhibition will both acknowledge Bae’s lasting impact on artists in Chicago and build awareness of the poignant work he left behind,” says René Morales, James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator. Gregory Byungho Bae (b. 1986, Salt Lake City, UT; d. 2021, Chicago, IL) received a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he also served as a lecturer. In 2021, he founded Chicago API Artists United (CAAU) in response to anti-Asian sentiment in the United States. In 2018, he co-founded exhibition space Bill’s Auto, Chicago. Solo exhibitions of Bae’s work were presented at table, Chicago (2019); 4th Ward Project Space, Chicago (2018); Federico Luger Gallery, Milan (2017); The Mission Projects, Chicago (2017); Chicago Urban Art Society (2015); and Opsis Art, Seoul (2015). He received awards from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, New York; Chicago Artists Coalition; and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, New York. The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. The museum is generously supported by its Board of Trustees; individual and corporate members; private and corporate foundations, including the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation; and government agencies. Programming is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. Museum capital improvements are supported by a Public Museum Capital Grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The MCA is a proud member of Museums in the Park and receives major support from the Chicago Park District. The MCA is located at 220 E. Chicago Avenue, one block east of Michigan Avenue. The museum and sculpture garden are open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm and Tuesday from 10 am to 8 pm. The museum is closed on Monday. Tuesdays are Com-

munity Free Days with free admission for Illinois residents. Suggested general admission is $12 for adults and $7 for students and seniors. Children 12 years of age and

under, MCA members, and members of the military are admitted free. Tickets are available on the MCA website. Information about MCA
