NEWS briefly EDUCATION COVID-19 VACCINE TO BE TESTED IN UIC CLINICAL TRIAL The University of Illinois at Chicago will soon test a vaccine for COVID-19. Expected to launch July 9, the trial — a phase 3 clinical study— will test the efficacy of a vaccine developed by biotech company Moderna. “We want to see if the vaccine will prevent people from getting COVID-19 or if it will prevent people from experiencing severe illness if they do get the disease,” said Dr. Richard Novak, lead investigator of the clinical trial at UIC. UIC is expected to be the only site in Chicago selected to launch the Moderna phase 3 trial, which is being administered by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. “UIC has a history of engaging diverse communities in our research programs and I believe our ability to reach the communities that have been hardest hit by the pandemic is one of the reasons that we were selected for this clinical trial,” Novak said. “We want to test this vaccine in people who are most at risk of experiencing complications and death due to the virus.” The UIC vaccine trial will be accessible through a number of clinical locations in the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System, or UI Health, including sites in Pilsen, Little Village and Hyde Park. Anyone interested in volunteering to participate in the vaccine trial should contact UIC researchers at 312-413-5897 or email ProjectWishDOM@uic.edu.

U.S. POSTAL SERVICE RELEASES DOG ATTACK NATIONAL RANKINGS The number of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) employees attacked by dogs nationwide fell to 5,803 in 2019 — more than 200 fewer than in 2018 and more than 400 fewer since 2017. According to USPS Safety Awareness Program Manager Chris Johnson, technology supports carrier safety in two ways: Mobile Delivery Devices, handheld scanners used by carriers to confirm customer delivery, include a feature to indicate the presence of a dog at an individual address. And the Informed Delivery service alerts customers to mail and packages coming to their homes, allowing them to plan for the carrier’s arrival by securing dogs safely. A total of 5,803 USPS employees were attacked by dogs in 2019. The top 20 rankings comprise 30 cities, as some cities reported the same number of attacks. In 2019, Chicago, Illinois ranked third on the list with 54 attacks.

“THE ECONOMIST US PRESIDENTIAL FORECAST” FINDS THAT JOE BIDEN CURRENTLY HAS 83% CHANCE OF WINNING AMERICA’S PRESIDENCY The Economist recently launched its first-ever statistical forecast of a US presidential election, calculating that Joe Biden currently has 83% chance of winning the presidency. https://economist.com/ us2020model The model, called “The Economist US presidential forecast,” was created by The Economist’s data team with help from Andrew Gelman and Merlin Heidemanns, political scientists at Columbia University. It estimates Joe Biden’s and Donald Trump’s probabilities of winning each individual state and the election overall. To produce these figures, it combines fundamental factors, such as economic conditions, presidential popularity and the amount of time one party has been in power, with polling data at both the national and state level. The model’s projections will be updated daily until the election to reflect the latest available data. G. Elliott Morris, data journalist at The Economist, said: “Among other innovations, The Economist US presidential forecast is the first of its kind to correct for partisan bias inherent in many presidential election polls. We are confident that it will be one of the most accurate forecasts available and will provide the US electorate with a true picture of the race.” The methodology for The Economist’s US election model is open-source and available to anyone here: https://projects.economist.com/us-2020-forecast/ president/how-this-works

Entrepreneur creates COVID-19 Vending Machine BY TIA CAROL JONES

Lolita Brown is an entrepreneur with a successful beauty business, Mental Beauty Supply. She is also an author and life coach. She found a way to offer products using a beauty supply vending machine that she repurposed. When COVID-19 hit, she saw a need for people to get products, which include masks, gloves and hand sanitizer. So, she created a COVID-19 Contactless Vending Machine. “I saw a need. So, I actually put masks and gloves and hand sanitizer in the vending machines with a credit card processor on it,” she said. “I have it over there on Madison at the Uncle Remus because it’s very busy over there.” Brown said the vending machine is important because a lot of businesses require people to wear masks to come inside. She said the community is often forgotten about when it comes to resources like providing masks or educating people on how to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Brown said she made it contactless to reduce theft from the machine. And, to reduce the people’s contact with touching money due to COVID-19. “I just thought it was neat to have something where they could just take their credit card or their debit card, put it up there and purchase it that way,” she said. A pack, with a mask and gloves costs $3. The hand sanitizer, with a wristband, costs $4. The hand sanitizer was purchased from a Black-owned company. Brown said she has five vending machines, which are available to purchase for $3,000. She said there is also an opportunity to franchise the vending machine or purchase a space in the

machine with their products for the COVID vending machine or the beauty supply vending machine. She said there have been people who have inquired about purchasing a vending machine. Brown said the response has been great. “Whichever one it is for the beauty supply vending machine or the COVID vending machine, it’s unbelievable. They can’t believe it, they’re just in awe,” she said. “They see the products.” Brown said she has been passing out flyers to let the community know there is a place where they can purchase clean masks for their health. “This is an innovative beauty company and we like to uplift our fellow Americans, and this is just a way to raise awareness,” and let them know we haven’t forgotten about them, she said. “We want to give them opportunities, as well, to put some money back into their communities. So, they can start their own business, put the idea out there to motivate and inspire them to do the same.” For more information about Mental Beauty Supply, visit mentalbeautysupply.com.

Congresswoman Karen Bass Says CBC Wants Federal Dollars to Aid the Black Press BY STACY M. BROWN NNPA Newswire Senior Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia

Congressional Black Caucus Chair Karen Bass (D-Calif.) joined the Black Press of America for a live interview to discuss the plight of African Americans during the coronavirus pandemic. Congresswoman Bass, the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), called the pandemic a “double-punch” to African Americans. She also called out President Donald Trump for what she stated was his lack of leadership as the virus has claimed more than 100,000 lives, including as many as 40,000 black people and the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd. Arbery, an African American Georgia resident, was shot and killed while jogging by a former law enforcement officer and his son.

Congresswoman Bass, the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), called the pandemic a “double-punch” to African Americans.

Floyd died after a police officer inexplicably and aggressively pressed his knee into the handcuffed Minneapolis resident’s neck. Bass also warned that Republicans led by Lindsay Graham (R-SC) are trying to get certain federal judges off the bench so that the GOP can shape the judicial branch for generations to come. She said the Trump administration’s failure to act and to lead during the

pandemic has damaged America’s reputation on the world stage and the president’s obsession with former President Barack Obama is in large part because Obama was superior in every way. “The man [Trump] has a very serious inferiority complex, I think he knows that President Barack Obama is superior to him intellectually, morally, physically, and I think that’s very troubling to him,” Bass stated. “How dare this black man be better than him. Obama’s popularity around the world is off the charts. Trump has never been able to arrive at the same standard, quality, effectiveness, honesty, moral character of Barack Obama.” During the 30-minute exclusive interview, Bass said the Black Press and local newspapers were essential, and she and the CBC continue to press for a financial set-aside for publishers. “It’s not only discussions,

and it was on our priority list. It still is,” Bass said of efforts to assist struggling African American newspaper publishers financially. “The best way to come at it is that the CBC has been calling for specific intervention in areas where COVID-19 specifically is killing black people,” Bass stated, adding that it’s a four-pronged effort. “One is testing, one is treatment, one is tracing, and one is a public education campaign,” she said. “The way we have packaged this; we think the public education campaign should provide direct resources to black newspapers, and that’s part of our plan. The Census needs to invest in our (blackowned) newspapers heavily. There’s no reason the federal government doesn’t do business with our newspapers. Of the billions of dollars they spend in advertising, some of it should be spent with our newspapers,” Bass stated.

Chicago Stimulus Payments Could Benefit College Students During COVID-19 Pandemic Continued from page 1 BY WENDELL HUTSON Contributing Writer

For the first time in three years, Brielle Hampton, a 20-year-old college student, has not had a summer job, thus limiting monies she normally would use to buy school supplies and engage in summer activities. “It feels strange not working for the summer. I am used to getting up in the morning to go to work, but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I am among the millions of people out of work at this time,” said Hampton, a Beverly resident.“ College students depend on summer jobs to help pay for school and to have some money in our pockets so we don’t have to ask our parents.” Hampton, a junior and cheerleader at Northwestern University in Evanston, along with countless college students, may be eligible to receive a $1,000 payment from the

Chicago Resiliency Fund. According to Erendira Rendon, vice president of immigrant advocacy for the nonprofit Resurrection Project, the fund was created as a way to help those who may not have qualified for a $1,200 federal stimulus check this year due to their immigration status or because they were claimed as dependents on someone else’s tax return. “The Fund has raised $5 million to provide economic relief to 5,000 individuals who qualify,” said Rendon. “The Open Society Foundations donated $1 million and an anonymous donor gave $4 million.” The Fund began accepting applications on June 22 and will continue processing applications on a first-come, first-serve basis until all funds are distributed, said Rendon, who added that checks would be mailed to applicants four weeks after they are approved. To apply, go online to resurrectionproject.org/ChicagoFund or call 312-880-1145.

And to be eligible, you must be a resident of Chicago, at least 18-years-old, did not receive a federal stimulus check, and your household income must be less than 300 percent of the poverty level. All applicants will have a phone interview and must provide proof of residency and household income. So, college students would need to provide their parents’ proof of income. Aside from college students, illegal immigrants and non-working spouses or partners who were claimed as dependents are also eligible to apply. The Fund is a partnership between the Mayor’s Office, the nonprofit Open Society Foundations and the nonprofit Resurrection Project. The Open Society Foundations donated $1 million and an anonymous donor gave $4 million, but none of the monies came from taxpayers, said Mayor Lori Lightfoot. “As part of my fight to mitigate the effects of economic hardship and poverty in Chicago, I know that what people struggling right

now need is money, and this fund will get them just that to make ends meet,” explained Lightfoot. “This fund serves as a critical resource for the thousands of Chicagoans who sorely need support and relief from the impact of COVID-19, but are unable to receive it through the federal government’s own stimulus channels.” But Hampton said the city of Chicago should have donated to the fund since it allocates monies to other areas. “I feel like the city of Chicago could have taken money away from the police department and put it into this fund. With Chicago being the third largest city in America, I’m sure it could have pinched a little bit here and a little bit there to shore up some money,” Hampton told the Citizen. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful 5,000 people will be helped, but in reality, that’s not a lot when you think about all the people that’s eligible to apply.”

New foster parent recruitment campaign strives to find loving homes for youth in care The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) recently launched a new social media campaign focused on foster parent recruitment. The campaign asks the simple question on behalf of youth in care: “Can you foster my future?” Youth are placed in the temporary care of DCFS by local courts when it is determined that their families cannot safely care for them. Today, there are just over 18,000 youth living in foster care in the state: 6,200 are living with foster families, 10,500 with relatives and 1,300 in group homes and institutions. “Youth placed in our care, like all youth, need a nurturing home – to grow up with their siblings, to communicate in their preferred language, stay in the same school and see their relatives and parents if it is safe to do so,” said Illinois DCFS Acting Director Marc D. Smith. “When foster families open their hearts and homes to a child who is experiencing what is certainly the most frightening and uncertain time in the child’s life, they are providing a safe haven, stability and paving the way for this child to

As the number of those living with dementia grows, experts offer advice on how to be a compassionate caregiver StatePoint - Dementia can be devastating for the people who live with it and their family members, and it’s a diagnosis more Americans will face as the U.S. population ages. In the next 20 years, the total number of those living with Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia in the U.S. is expected to approximately double from 7.2 million to nearly 13 million, according to the Milken Institute. “As the life a person always knew becomes increasingly unfamiliar, caregivers can play an important role in helping ease anxiety,” says Jennifer Sheets, president and chief executive officer of Interim HealthCare Inc., an in-home healthcare and assistance provider that takes a positive approach to caring for those with dementia. “With the right knowledge, a caregiver can help their loved one cope with the changes they are experiencing.” Dementia is caused by physical changes in the brain and while there any many kinds of dementia, Alzheimer’s is the most common. In recognition of Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, commemorated in June, Interim HealthCare recommends three

practical tips for compassionate caregiving: 1. Use the hand-under-hand technique: Hand-under-Hand is a technique that caregivers can use to reduce anxiety and calm a person with dementia. The base or heal of the hand is a highly sensitive area. Put slight pressure on that area by clasping your loved one’s dominant hand. This technique works best

if you put your hand underneath theirs. That gives them a feeling of control as well as calms them. 2. Acknowledge evolving tastes: A person living with dementia experiences a range of sensory and cognitive changes that can

Tripadvisor Releases Findings of a Staged Recovery Tripadvisor® recently released the findings of a multi-month study that analyzed consumer travel sentiment and first party behavioral data related to the ongoing pandemic. The report outlines a five-stage recovery for the travel and hospitality industry, inclusive of the period of decline created by the pandemic through the anticipated market recovery and the return of international travel. affect their appetite and food preferences. Indeed, your loved one’s favorite foods may now have a negative smell or taste to them. While maintaining good nutrition is essential, don’t force these foods or argue over them. Realize these preferences may change again. 3. Carve out time for art and music: Once a person is diagnosed with dementia, their ability to act independently greatly diminishes. However, artwork and music allow for freedom of expression, which over time, can be quite impactful in relieving anxiety. Remember, it’s about the creative process, not your loved one’s abilities. Los Angeles-based entrepreneur Elizabeth Faraut, who created a new category within the eyewear industry 20 years ago with the iconic LA LOOP, has created a new product, LA MASK, a hand-designed solution to today’s omnipresent need for one to wear a mask in public places and the difficulty of keeping track of them. The concept for LA MASK came when Faraut was faced with trips outside her home on weekly runs to the market and it was too easy to leave a mask behind. As the LA LOOP is the simple way to hang one’s eyewear around the neck, LA MASK performs the same function for masks. “As shelter-at-home became the new normal, it didn’t take me long to figure out that going grocery shopping early on Sunday morning was the way to go. And while I may have realized the best times to shop, there were snags along the way - when I would arrive at the market and realized I had forgotten my mask, creating LA MASK was a necessity,” says Faraut. LA MASK can be purchased with or without a mask. When worn with a mask, LA MASK can hang from one’s neck with the mask hanging against the chest so that it is at one’s fingertips ready to be put on at a moment’s notice. When the mask is removed (by unclipping the clasps) LA MASK is a necklace or can be wrapped around the wrist and worn as a bracelet. LA MASK is handmade in Los Angeles. The Vintage masks collection by LA MASK uses vintage fabrics like Guatemalan Indigo, seersucker blue and white pin striped cotton and Italian linens. The Classic collection masks are 100% cotton blend. All fabrics are pre-washed. Along with functionality, LA MASK is connecting consumers and communities. LA MASK customers are placing gift orders, asking their purchases to be sent directly to loved ones. Faraut is often handwriting gift notes with orders that read: “Stay safe and healthy. I love you.” LA MASK is being sold at retailers around the world and sold online at www.laloop.com.

ENTERTAINMENT NFL Continues Strong Social Justice Initiative with $250 Million Commitment BY STACY M. BROWN NNPA Newswire Senior Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia

Voltaren teams up with music superstar Paula Abdul (pictured) to inspire people everywhere to rediscover the joy of movement.

GSK Consumer Healthcare teams up with Paula Abdul for the launch of Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel GlaxoSmithKline (LSE/NYSE: GSK) has announced that Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel (diclofenac sodium topical gel, 1% (NSAID) arthritis pain reliever) recently became available over-the-counter (OTC) online and in stores nationwide, providing the over 30 million osteoarthritis patients across the country broader access to a leading pain relief option. To launch the OTC offering, Voltaren is teaming up with music superstar Paula Abdul, who uses Voltaren for her arthritis pain. Staying active is important for arthritis patients everywhere, and together, Voltaren and Paula Abdul will inspire people to “rediscover the joy of movement.” “I’m excited to partner with Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel to share my personal journey with arthritis and success using Voltaren,” Abdul said. “I’ve put my joints through a lot over the years. Dancing, jumping, flipping – it’s my heart and soul, but I’ve been pushing my joints to the limit for decades as a result. When I was diagnosed with arthritis, my doctor prescribed Voltaren, which made a huge difference in relieving my pain and helping me move with ease. I am so excited it’s now available OTC at stores nationwide.” Joint pain due to arthritis symptoms is a daily reality for millions of people in the United States, and with many people across the country staying at home more

often, finding arthritis pain relief is more important than ever. In a recent study of 1,000 U.S. adults aged 35+ suffering from joint pain conducted by Voltaren in partnership with Wakefield Research, 82 percent of respondents said their physical activity has decreased as a result of more time at home, and 92 percent of respondents report that their joint pain is the same or more severe during this time. “Stay-at-home orders led to a unique set of challenges for those with arthritis,” said Jissan Cherian, director, U.S. OTC Marketing at GSK Consumer Healthcare. “Now, more than ever, we need to offer solutions that help ease the challenge of joint pain and inspire arthritis patients to rediscover the joy of movement, even as we adapt to changing routines and a new way of life.” As an alternative to pills, Voltaren

treats joint pain by delivering medicine at the source, and is absorbed through the skin and not through the stomach and is applied directly to the site of pain. “As the world leader in pain relief, we have seen how Voltaren has helped people with osteoarthritis treat their pain and improve their quality of life” Cherian said. “The OTC availability of Voltaren Arthritis Pain helps to provide greater access to an effective topical treatment option for joint pain patients, so more people with osteoarthritis pain can find relief.” Voltaren Arthritis Pain Gel is now available online and at most major retailers nationwide.

The National Football League’s social justice initiative has continued to inspire change in underserved communities, including a $250 million commitment to bring awareness, dialogue, and a renewed direction to the conversation of racial and social inequality. On Thursday, June 11, officials revealed exclusively to Black Press USA, that the commitment includes dedicated financial resources from the league, clubs, and players to nonprofits. The commitment is also a league-wide amplification of inspiring stories of players making differences in their communities and society and deploying public policy and government affairs resources at the local, state, and national levels. In the 2019 season, NFL teams participated in or hosted more than 500 social justice events. Since 2017, teams have contributed $44 million from sources including social justice grants approved by the league’s players and owner’s workgroup; the NFL Foundation matching grants; an ongoing financial commitment to the Player’s Coalition; and as part of 32 teams’ social justice matching funds. “What inspired [the NFL] is the players lending their voices, their work, to issues of social injustice and racial injustice,” stated Anna Isaacson, the NFL’s senior vice president of social responsibility and community relations. “This work didn’t start yesterday. Around 2016 and 2017, Colin Kaepernick and other players raised their voices and protested and started a movement which then inspired the NFL and our ownership to launch our Social Justice Initiatives.” As a result of those efforts, continued discussions and dialogue, Isaacson said the NFL prioritized four key areas: education, economic

advancement, criminal justice reform, and community and police relations. Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers star quarterback famously took a knee during the playing of the national anthem to protest social and racial injustice. However, the Super Bowl quarterback’s protest was widely misconstrued and condemned by many, and teams have failed to sign the former star. In the wake of continued police violence against African Americans and the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the NFL recently issued an apology for failing to understand the scope of the injustice African Americans have faced. “Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been watching what’s going on, and there have been tons of discussions about what else we can do, how can we make it clear that this is an authentic and long-term commitment from the NFL,” Isaacson told Black Press USA. “That commitment is a standard $250 million over 10 years,” she stated. Isaacson noted that the league’s 100-year history hasn’t just been about football. “We’d be nowhere without our fans, and nowhere without our players and the communities that invest in us,” she pronounced. “We’ve always been about investing in our communities, and a lot of that investment has been in underserved communities, Black communities, and communities of color. Whether it be on cancerrelated work, health and wellness, physical activities, or domestic violence. What the NFL players have brought to the forefront over the past couple of years have been the importance of bringing community and law enforcement together. We’ve put our resources, money, and time into education and awareness. The NFL has stood for communities and giving back to communities, and particularly underresourced and underfunded communities.”

With the Help of our Ancestors We Can Heal and Say “We CAN Breathe! BY REV. MORRICE COVERSON Pastor, Church of the Spirit and President/ Founder, Institute for Positive Living

#BlackLivesMatter. This not just about the healing of the United States, but also the healing of the world. What we are experiencing now, is rooted in our past and will affect our future. Because our present experience is rooted in the past, we must think about the role of our ancestors, not only in the past, but the role they are playing now as they try to help with the healing. I can hear our ancestors, those people who have passed on many years ago. I can hear them saying, “I cannot breathe!” And I hear not only those in slavery. I hear those who fled to the north out of slavery. I can hear them saying, “I cannot breathe!” I can hear our ancestors who stayed in the south and lived during Jim Crow saying, “I cannot breathe!” And I can hear those who migrated north hoping for a better life saying, “I cannot breathe!”

destroying the spirits of the victims and the victimizers. It is time that all human beings are able to breathe. “Let us breathe!” #BlackLivesMatter is a tool that can help us realize that we are collectively one. By joining together in this movement, we are coming together to say, “Let us breathe!” I hear the ancestors saying, “Now is the time! It is time for the separatism that has been here since we were brought here as unpaid workers and slaves to cease. It is time for the separatism that caused lynchings during Jim Crow to go unpunished and race massacres like the one that destroyed the Black Wall Street district in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1921 to be forgotten, to cease. It is time for us to come together collectively as one and say ‘Let us breathe!’ It is time for us to come together and say: ‘Let us breathe!’ ‘Let us breathe!’ ‘Let us breathe! And continue to say this until each one of us can say, ‘I CAN breathe!’ And all of us together can say, “We CAN breathe!’” Our ancestors hold no animosity for the t

ransgressions of the past, which saw the European man refusing to understand and recognize the value of others. I hold no animosity. Instead, I heed their counsel. For I know, that with the help of our ancestors in spirit, we can find the healing that will help us all come together and say, “We CAN breathe!” It is with this hope and knowledge that the ancestors guide us. They tell us that NOW is the time to make changes that are good. For I know, that with the help of our ancestors in spirit, we can find the healing that will help us all come together and say, “We CAN breathe!” It is with this hope and knowledge that the ancestors guide us. They tell us that NOW is the time to make changes that are good. For every young person that walks in protest, there is an ancestor who walks with them, an invisible friend protecting and guiding them. Those who have caused havoc in our communities were not listening to the beat of the ancestors, but to the rage that is inside of them. Even though in America there have been 400 years of racism and 400 years of African Americans being killed, the ancestors do not condone the destroying of the community. Instead, they say that it is time for this ugly

And I can hear those who walked with Dr. Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights

Movement (some still living, some in the Spirit World). I hear them repeating Dr. King’s words: “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal’… I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” But I can also hear them say, “I cannot breathe!” And today, I hear too many of my Black brothers and sisters saying, “I cannot breathe!” In truth, we in the Black community were not ever able to breathe. That’s why #BlackLivesMatter is important. This does not negate the fact that all lives matter. It puts the spotlight on the fact that America is still infected with the Black Lives Don’t Matter virus that destroyed so many of our ancestors during slavery and Jim Crow. Yes! #BlackLivesMatter puts the spotlight on the fact that this Black Lives Don’t Matter virus is still infecting us today. And it is not only here in America. #BlackLivesMatter is putting the spotlight on people of color in countries around the world. They are raising their voices and joining us in America, saying, “I cannot breathe!” And we are all saying, “Let us breathe!” COVID-19 is a pandemic of the body. The body. The Black Lives Don’t Matter virus is a pandemic of the spirit. It is a virus that is

chapter of American history to be over. “It is over!” they say. “Let us recognize that we are all one! Let us turn ‘I cannot breathe’ into ‘I CAN breathe!’ Let us turn ‘We cannot breathe!’ into ‘We CAN breathe!” The ancestors know that the journey to welcoming African Americans to sit as equals at the table; to have a voice at that table, has been a long one. And they know that the journey is not done. They want us to know that they are with us every step of the way. They are whispering to our young people: “Keep going! Demonstrate, but don’t destroy!” George Floyd is one of the ancestors now. His death on earth created a movement that has the momentum to erase the stain of racism and write a new story, With the help of George Floyd and all the ancestors and theefforts of those who march for #BlackLivesMatter and do the hard work, we will march together into a society, a country, and a world, where each individual can say, “I CAN breathe!” and all of us can say “We CAN breathe!”

OPEN OPINION

Education is a Big Part of the Solution that if we were to somehow solve police

By Bernard Clay, Executive Director, Introspect Youth Services Member, Counting on Chicago Coalition The pain of George Floyd’s murder has sent shockwaves through our nation, including right here in Chicago. It was vicious and shocking but, sadly, not surprising. We are right to worry that the events of the last week will too easily pigeonhole the sweeping tragedy of racism in America into merely a matter of police conduct, as critically important an issue that is. The murder of young black men at the hands of police is one of the many terrible consequences of systematic and non-systematic racism that exists in America. But police brutality is not the problem itself; it’s a horrifying and agonizing symptom. We must all push back on any implication

misconduct that the issue of black disenfranchisement will be solved. Black Lives Matter, absolutely. But Black Well-Being Matters too. Black Economic Enfranchisement Matters. Black Health Care Matters. Black Education Matters. I’ve worked my whole life encouraging black youth on Chicago’s Westside to pursue post-secondary education as the first step to claiming what is rightfully theirs: economic opportunity in this, the wealthiest nation on earth. It is hard work. It starts by inspiring our youth to broaden their imagination of what their future can hold and setting aside their understandable intuition that the deck is stacked impossibly against them. It requires navigating a complicated testing, applications and admissions process. It requires swimming upstream against a post-secondary education landscape that favors the

www.citizennewspapergroup.com

financially well-off.

But success is not only possible, we see it every day at Introspect Youth Services, We have placed more than 40,000 young people into colleges and professional training programs since 1977. We’ve done a lot but there is so much more we should do as a society. This is an important moment in the long conversation over racial justice. We must use this energy and passion to address abject violence against African Americans. But, we also must use this moment to fortify our efforts to bring opportunity to black youth and to answer the call of the Counting on Chicago Coalition and complete the census, and, to ensure we get the funding we need for education in our communities.
