AETNA BETTER HEALTH PREMIER PLAN MMAI APPROVED TO EXPAND STATEWIDE TO SERVE DUAL ELIGIBLE MEDICARE-MEDICAID CUSTOMERS ACROSS ILLINOIS Aetna®, a CVS Health® company (NYSE: CVS), recently announced it has received approval to expand its existing Illinois Medicare-Medicaid Alignment Initiative (MMAI) demonstration health plan (Aetna Better Health® Premier Plan MMAI) to serve the entire state. The MMAI is a groundbreaking joint effort by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to reform the way care is delivered to individuals eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid services (“dual eligibles”). The statewide expansion is the result of extensive planning initiated in 2019 by HFS in collaboration with CMS, health plans and community stakeholders. The MMAI integrated delivery system and payment model aims to improve the quality, coordination and cost-effectiveness of care for dual eligibles. Aetna is the only health plan approved to operate the MMAI program across all Illinois counties.

G7 LEADERS UNITE AROUND AMBITIOUS GLOBAL CONSERVATION AGENDA Leaders of seven of the 10 largest economies in the world recently united in an ambitious agenda for the conservation of the planet, recognizing the critical role of nature in rebuilding the global economy in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. In a joint statement, the heads of state from the G7 nations agreed to conserve or protect at least 30% each of the land and ocean on earth by 2030 to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. The communique also included support for conserving the biologically rich waters of the Antarctic Southern Ocean, tackling marine plastic pollution, addressing unsustainable and illegal activities negatively impacting nature, and mobilizing sustained financing to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss. The G7 finance ministers pledged to approach these measures with a commitment to an “inclusive global recovery that builds back better and greener.”
Shore Community Services celebrates 70 years Continued from page 1 BY TIA CAROL JONES
For more than 70 years, Shore Community Services, Inc. has been servicing people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. This year, Shore Community Services will celebrate the milestone with a series of events. India Ehioba, CEO of Shore Community Services, said its goal is to provide whatever the people they service need to help them live as independently as possible, which includes job placement and training and housing assistance, as
well as therapeutic services. She said, in one form or another, Shore services 300 families. Ehioba said in the midst of COVID-19, Shore continued to provide services to those in residential care at the facility. “Last year, in March when this first came out, it was a scary time. Nursing homes were being hit hard. Group homes were right behind them. It did impact us, and we did lose several clients,” she said. “It affected us on a lot of levels but we still had to be the one to be there.” Ehioba said it took a lot of sharing of information. She said while there was a shortage of Personal Protective Equip-
ment, the community really stepped up. She said women in the community made masks that were distributed to staff. Ehioba served on the board of the Illinois Association of Rehabilitation Facilities, an advocacy organization for disability organizations across the State. Ehioba said Shore can be a source for people no matter where they are and can guide people to resources in their area. She said Shore knows the specialties of other organizations and can recommend them. She said Shore tries to stay abreast of what their peers are doing so that they can help refer families and individuals to the right resources.
Beware of texts, emails requesting personal info The Illinois Department of Transportation is reminding the public to be on the alert for text and email scams asking for personal information. Over the last several weeks, IDOT has been made aware messages sent fraudulently on its behalf, attempting to defraud the public. “If you receive a text or email that appears to be from IDOT asking for your personal information, you can be sure it’s a scam,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “Please know that we are aware of this issue and are working with the Illinois Attorney General’s office to protect you from these fraudulent schemes.” While the messages might look offi-
cial, IDOT will never request personal information, such as Social Security numbers or banking information, via text or email. If you receive such a message, delete it. Do not provide any information or click any links. Doing so could install malware on your device or computer. To protect your personal information, take the following precautions: • Delete unsolicited emails and texts requesting personal information or promising state driver’s licenses or IDs. Do not click on any links contained in such emails or texts, as they may place malware on your computer or devices. • Hang up on any calls, including robocalls, that ask you to take immediate
action or provide personally identifiable information. • Ask to use other types of identifiers besides your Social Security number. • Keep your software up to date, including operating systems and antivirus protection programs on your computer, phone and other devices. Most can be set to update automatically. Coalition behind the Empowering Communities for Public Safety ordinance blasts Lightfoot’s opposition to democracy and continued obstruction of police reform According to a press release by the Chicao Alliance Against racist and Political Repression, On Friday June 18, as she has done throughout her term, Mayor Lightfoot once again obstructed the democratic process of reforming Chicago’s troubled police department, instructing her allies in the Public Safety Committee to refuse to even consider a revised version of the Empowering Communities for Public Safety (ECPS) ordinance. Last Friday was supposed to be a capstone moment in Chicago’s years-long search for a solution to the endemic racism that haunts its police department, a search that culminated in the creation of the ECPS ordinance, around which hundreds of community organizations as well as dozens of labor unions, houses of worship, and all four caucuses in City Council have rallied.

Neighborhood beautification effort
Rather than meeting the weight of this historic moment and engaging in an open and democratic debate about a bill that, at its heart, is about democracy and its extension to police accountability, the Mayor’s allies engaged in a shameful display of procedural manipulation in order to thwart the democratic process and prevent the ECPS bill from even being debated in committee. “If it wasn’t clear enough that Mayor Lightfoot is against democratic police accountability for Chicago, her actions on Friday showed she is even willing to subvert our democratic process in order to make sure our rights to true police accountability don’t threaten her power,” said Jazmine Salas, co-chair of the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Repression. “Lightfoot has shown, once again, that she is the single greatest obstacle to police reform in Chicago.” The Mayor’s office has claimed it is close to reaching an agreement with the ECPS coalition on an ordinance. This is a lie. The ECPS coalition has met exactly once with members of the Mayor’s office – enough to make it clear to the coalition that Lightfoot does not believe communities have any role to play in the process of community oversight. “Our previous talks with the Mayor broke down because of Lightfoot’s disregard for communities and their need to have a say in their own safety,” said Desmon Yancy, Director of Community Organizing at the Inner-City Muslim Action Network. “As a coalition, we have no doubt that Lightfoot is totally unwilling to lead this city in the direction it is demanding to go – a future in which our communities are in charge of public safety. The city of Chicago has come together around that vision and this ordinance and we won’t stop fighting as a coalition for our right to democratic police accountability,” he added.
NeighborWorks Day is an annual event.
Members of the community recently joined Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago (NHS) in welcoming Guaranteed Rate volunteers to West Humboldt Park for a neighborhood beautification effort on Saturday, June 12. Those present participated in landscape work at the Ujima Community Garden located at 549 N. Central Park Avenue. (On the corner of Central Park Ave. and Ohio St.), according to a press release. “The programs and services we offer meet a variety of needs for those living in this community,” said NHS president and CEO Anthony E. Simpkins. “We’ve been working consistently in this area serving the people and we’re glad to have the
support of Guaranteed Rate in our mission to improve and create neighborhoods of choice for the city’s residents,” he added. “Guaranteed Rate is fully committed to improving our great Chicago neighborhoods,” said Guaranteed Rate National Diverse Segments Director Camilo Escalante. “As we work to build more diverse communities throughout the country, we are proud to be making a direct and positive impact on the communities we serve, especially in our hometown.” Each June, as part of National NeighborWorks Week (June 5th -12th) and to mark National Homeownership Month, NHS organizes and mobilizes volunteers,
Moving forward, the coalition has decided to split ECPS into two ordinances. One will create the Local District Councils and the Community Commission envisioned by the original bill to oversee police department policy and investigations of police misconduct through COPA. The other will place a referendum on the ballot to ask Chicagoans whether the Community Commission should be directly elected and include expanded powers.

business owners, elected officials and civic leaders for events designed to improve neighborhoods and create awareness of the unique amenities located within the communities they serve. NHS of Chicago is part of the national NeighborWorks network, an affiliation of more than 240 nonprofit organizations located in every state, the District of Columbia and
Puerto Rico. The NeighborWorks network was founded and is supported by NeighborWorks America, which creates opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen their communities. Funding for NHS’ 2021 NeighborWorks Day has been made possible through the generous sponsorship of Guaranteed Rate.

“The Black Caucus, Latino Caucus, Progressive Caucus, and Democratic Socialist Caucus all voted to endorse an ordinance that includes a referendum to empower Chicagoans to make a democratic choice about the Commission and its powers,” said Alderperson Carlos Ramirez-Rosa of the 35th Ward, Chairperson of the Democratic Socialist Caucus. He added, “In the face of a committee that is unwilling to even consider the change Chicago needs, we split the referendum from the original ordinance to ensure we uphold the rights of Chicagoans to decide on their public safety in a fair and democratic manner. We will be presenting the referendum in a standalone ordinance soon.” Alderman Roderick Sawyer of the 6th Ward, a lead sponsor of ECPS and a member of the Black Caucus, agreed. “Last Friday was a setback for the city of Chicago, but our coalition will go forward to ensure that our city’s Black and brown communities have police accountability and public safety that empowers them to become the solution to ending police misconduct.”

Redfin Reports Pending Sales Continue to Slow--Still Up 29% from 2020 The breakneck pace of the housing market is beginning to slow heading into June, according to a new report from Redfin (redfin.com), the technology-powered real estate brokerage. Leading indicators of activity are now mostly cooling off instead of continuing to heat up. Adjusted for seasonality, home purchase applications have been falling since late March and are now 7% below their average levels in January and February 2020, despite low mortgage rates and easing access to credit. The cooling market is also reflected in a four-week decline in pending sales and a drop in Redfin’s demand index, which is down 12% from its late-March peak. Taken as a whole, the data paints a picture not of a bursting bubble, but a clear change from the overheated spring market. “Homebuyers may have found a better way to spend Memorial Day weekend than touring homes, but
most have not exited the market entirely,” said Redfin Lead Economist Taylor Marr. “Buyers have faced a tough market this year and fewer feel it is a good time to buy as the allure of low rates has waned, so some are choosing to wait it out for now. With demand stabilizing, the housing market should become more balanced, allowing homebuyers to have a less stressful and challenging time finding and competing for a home.” “While the market has not come to a full stop, we are seeing signs of yielding,” said Westchester County, NY Redfin real estate agent Candice Smith. “Buyers are winning bidding wars with offers that are $60,000 or less over asking prices; just a month ago in similar situations they had to go $100,000 or more over asking. Bidding wars are still the norm, but
the number of competing offers have been cut in half from around 17 to about eight. Homebuyers still need to be strategically creative when submitting their highest and best offer, which involves methods like offering to cover an appraisal gap upfront, dropping the appraisal or mortgage contingency altogether or adding escalation clauses.” Key housing market takeaways for 400+ U.S. metro areas: Unless otherwise noted, this data covers the four-week period ending June 6. Redfin’s housing market data goes back through 2012. Data on homes listed and/or sold during the period: The median home-sale price increased 24% year over year to $358,749, a record high. Asking prices of newly listed homes hit a new all-time high of $364,725, up 14% from the same time a year ago. Pending home sales were up 29% year over year. Seasonally adjusted
pending sales are down 9.7% from their peak four weeks ago. The sudden slowdown in pending sales is likely due to more people opting to pause their home search and take advantage of the holiday weekend. New listings of homes for sale were up 9% from a year earlier. Active listings (the number of homes listed for sale at any point during the period) fell 37% from 2020, and have been relatively flat since late February. 56% of homes that went under contract had an accepted offer within the first two weeks on the market, well above the 43% rate during the same period a year ago. 43% of homes that went under contract had an accepted offer within one week of hitting the market, up from 31% during the same period a year earlier. Homes that sold were on the market for a median of 16 days, a new all-time low and down from 38 days a year earlier.

A record 53% of homes sold above list price, up from 25% a year earlier. The average sale-to-list price ratio, which measures how close homes are selling to their asking prices, increased to 102.1%—3.7 percentage points higher than a year earlier and an all-time high. Other leading indicators of homebuying activity: Mortgage purchase applications increased 0.3% week over week (seasonally adjusted) during the week ending June 4. For the week ending June 10, 30-year mortgage rates decreased to 2.96%. 35% of consumers said it is a good time to buy a home in May, according to Fannie Mae’s homebuying sentiment index, down from 47% in April and 52% in May 2020. Home tours as of June 6 were 26% above their level at the beginning of the year, compared to 40% at the same period in 2020, according to home tour technology company ShowingTime.

HOME & GARDENING
Is Your Roof Strong Enough To Endure Wicked Summer Weather? (StatePoint) The summer months are often accompanied by rough weather that can do a number on a roof if it’s not designed to withstand the elements. Experts say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. “Having a roof that exceeds code and is made from strong, high-quality products can make all the difference when a big summer storm blows through,” says Scott Lowe, sales manager, ProVia. “You are always better off taking preemptive steps to protect your home and family than making repairs and upgrades in the aftermath of a storm.” Here are a few key things to look out for in a roof: • Weather Performance: Your roof should meet or exceed third-party testing so you never have to worry about the next bad storm. This includes defense against wind uplift and a barrier system to protect against hail and sheeting rain. • Durability: The right roof will retain its structural integrity and appearance for years to come with little maintenance. To that end, be sure your new roof offers UV protection against chalking and weathering, as well as resistance to corrosion, mildew, algae and black streaks. • Cost Benefits: While a new roof might seem like a big investment, the right choice can actually help you save money over the long run, with some models offering substantial energy savings and reduced insurance premiums. • Beauty: A roof makes up 50-60 percent of a home’s appearance, so while performance is essential, don’t compromise on aesthetics. Updating a roof can add instant and dramatic curb appeal. • Resale Potential: If you intend to relocate at any point, think about how your roof may factor into a home sale. A beautiful, well-manufactured roof with a transferrable lifetime warranty can be a major selling point. • Materials: While traditional materials like asphalt, wood shakes and slate can present various issues like shorter life spans, damage concerns, maintenance issues and disposal problems, metal roofing can overcome these obstacles and provide significant advantages. Check out ProVia’s distinctive metal shake and slate roofing panels, which are manufactured with 10 percent more galvanized steel than industry standards, yet are up to three times lighter than asphalt shingles. Available in wood shake and slate styles, the manufacturer’s embossed metal roofing provides distinctive style and natural-looking details in a durable finish. Finally, ProVia metal roof systems are designed to ensure easy installation, and installers are trained and certified to ensure workmanship and maximum roof performance. To learn more, visit provia.com. The decision to reroof your home is a big one. For easier
maintenance and long-term performance through summer storms and all other kinds of extreme weather, be sure you understand all the aspects of the investment.
DIY Kitchen Makeover Ideas You Can Complete in a Weekend (StatePoint) Whether you’re putting down roots or putting your home on the market, kitchen upgrades make a huge impact. Not only do they have daily “good feeling” appeal for current homeowners, they can offer a great return on investment when it’s time to sell. So it’s no surprise that kitchens were the second leading site of home improvements made since the pandemic, according to Hippos’s recent “State of Homeownership Survey.” Boost your kitchen’s beauty and functionality with these DIY makeover ideas: 1. Countertops. Tired of boring countertops? When using the SpreadStone kit from Daich Coatings, an elegant new finish requires only the ability to paint, roll and sand. Working well on existing laminate, cultured marble, formica and other solid surfaces, the result is a dynamic stone finish that provides shimmering mineral accents and color highlights found in natural mined rock. The three-step process includes applications of a stone base coat, decorative stone coat and stone clear top coat. Finished countertops resist heat, stains, abrasion, impact and household cleaners. Available in 10 colors, including Oyster and Volcanic Black, each kit includes application tools and required coatings to complete 30 to 40 square feet of space. Kits are available online at The Home Depot and at daichcoatings.com. 2. Decorative boards. Add warmth to bars and kitchen islands, or an entire wall, by installing decorative wood boards. The ready-to-install S4S Decorative Boards from Ornamental Decorative Millwork provide a rich, clean appearance and are available in Ambrosia Maple, White Oak, Black Stained Aspen and Gray Stained Aspen profiles. 3. Track lighting. For a cool look that’s also highly functional, install track lighting above all areas of the kitchen where you slice, dice and sauté, or use it to highlight design elements. Kits make installation easy and are available in a range of designs complementing any style. Add specialty lighting in other areas of the kitchen to give the room a warm glow.
4. Floating shelves. Add floating shelves to keep spices handy, hold favorite cookbooks, stack plates or display decorative accent pieces. Lightweight and easyto-install in just minutes, those from Ornamental Decorative Millwork can be easily painted or stained to complement other design elements in the room. 5. Wood beams. Add architectural style and warmth to your kitchen (or any other room) with lightweight Rustic Beams from Ornamental Decorative Millwork. Whether it’s adding straight beams, creating a center beam with cross beams, or crafting a coffered ceiling, home design creativity knows no bounds with this DIY project. Made of real wood, these pre-stained U-shaped beams and wrought iron metal accent brackets are available at Lowe’s and come with everything needed for installation. 6. Outdoor kitchen. Building an outdoor kitchen is an amazing way to make better use of your backyard and enjoy fresh air as you cook and dine. Using VertiStone Roll-On Wall Texture, you can ensure the space is beautiful. Without prep work and in little time, you can use it to completely transform any drywall, block, masonry or concrete outdoor kitchen surface in such finishes as smooth polished marble, natural suede, parchment, dream lace and linen. Then, to protect the newly-coated surfaces, simply add Hi-Build Ultra Clear Coat, a tough coating that resists water, U/V rays, chemicals, impact and abrasion. 3 Safe Senior Exercise Options For Summer NAPS — Sunshine and warm weather have many people thinking about new workout options. If you’re ready to kickstart your fitness routine—but want to do so safely— consider these three simple tips: 1.Check in with your gym about its COVID-safe offerings. Many Americans who have been avoiding public places this past year are now looking to expand their horizons, including going back to a gym. Growing numbers of gyms now offer outdoor workout spaces that include many of the weight training and aerobics equipment choices you previously enjoyed indoors—treadmills, stair climbers, weight machines, free weights—and even outdoor classes. Outdoors or indoors, many gyms continue to maintain at least six feet between each workout station, require masks within the space, and provide free hand sanitizer, clean equipment assurances and other COVID-safe protocols. Give your gym a call or visit the location to find out what specific COVID-safe guidelines are in place there, so you

emotional well-being. Take yourself to a park to explore a new walking or hiking path. There are several apps that can locate hiking trails near you. Challenge a friend to a regular game of tennis, pickleball or bocce ball. Or dust

off your bicycles and enjoy the freedom of feeling the wind in your faces. Establishing a fun exercise routine with a friend can motivate you to keep it up and help lift your spirits. Older adults reported increased feelings of isolation last year. Exercising with a friend can help you shake off the loneliness blues. Being outdoors offers the added benefit of providing you with a dose of vitamin D. Your body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium and to enhance bone health and immune system function. Regularly spending time outdoors is the most natural way to get the recommended 10 to 30 minutes of sun exposure several times a week. Just don’t forget to put on sunscreen. 3.Augment your workout with home exercise classes. National guidelines recommend that you get at least 150 minutes per week of exercise. To make sure you’re meeting that, augment your workout routine with home exercise classes that you can view on your laptop, phone or other devices. For best results, mix things up. Incorporate cardio exer-
cise classes with strength training videos that use resistance bands or free weights. If you want to improve balance or flexibility, try a yoga or tai chi class. Popular options such as the Silver&Fit® Healthy Aging and Exercise program offer a wide range of free online classes specially designed for older adults. Classes premiere daily on Facebook Live from 8 AM to 4 PM Pacific time, 6 days a week. You can join the scheduled classes at https://www.facebook.com/ SilverandFit to enjoy engaging live with other online viewers. Or you can view the replays on YouTube at a time that’s convenient to you. You’ll find them at: www.youtube.com/ silverandfit. Now can be your time to get back into a fitness routine—or start a new one. Find workout options that you love and that motivate you to stick with them. Then make the most of the season. As always, before you start any new exercise routine, talk to your doctor to discuss your goals and what types of exercise might be safest for you.

An Easy-to-Make Summer Sweet (Culinary.net) When it’s beyond hot outside and the kids are begging for a delicious afternoon snack, sometimes it’s difficult to know where to turn. The pantry is full and the refrigerator is stocked, yet nothing sounds appetizing when it’s scorching outside. Combining three simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen can save the day and provide a refreshing and scrumptious snack. Try this 3-Ingredients Strawberry Ice Cream on warm days ahead. It’s chilled to perfection with fresh strawberries and fluffy whipping cream to create a creamy texture perfect for the kiddos. Start by pureeing 1 pound of fresh strawberries. Add 1 pint of whipping cream and sweetened condensed milk to a mixing bowl then beat until stiff peaks form. Fold the strawberry puree in with the whipping cream mixture. Pour into a loaf pan and freeze for 5 hours. Before serving, let ice cream soften for 5-10 minutes. It’s delicious, rich and has sweet strawberry flavor that can help satisfy nearly any sweet tooth. It’s a wonderful treat after long summer days spent playing outside, splashing in the pool or just relaxing, soaking up the sun. Find more summer dessert recipes at Culinary.net. A Fruity Sprinkle Surprise (Culinary.net) To kids, birthday parties are a big deal and only happen once a year. From the decorations to their friends and all the sweet, delicious treats to devour, it can be an overwhelming amount of excitement and awe. They receive gifts, get to have fun with their friends and family, and get to snack on treats they typically don’t have on a regular basis. This is part of what makes birthdays so fun. It can be a lot of pressure for parents, though. You want everything to be perfect and fall in line with expectations, especially when it comes to the food and treats served to everyone that day. At the next party you’re hosting, try this delightful Fruity Sprinkles Smoothie that fits the theme for nearly any colorful birthday bash. Mayor Lightfoot And Kennedy-King College Announce Tech Launchpad To Close Industry Equity Gaps World Business Chicago to Provide ThinkChicago Tech Program for City Colleges Students; Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership Connects Job Seekers to Tech Careers and Employers to a Skilled Workforce As part of Chicago’s effort to match thriving local tech firms with topnotch and diverse talent, Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot joined leaders from education, tech, and workforce development sectors and announced new and expanded programs to help close the tech industry’s equity gaps, including the creation of a new Tech Launchpad at Kennedy-King College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago. Housed in Kennedy-King College’s new technology lab, the Tech Launchpad will offer credit and non-credit academic programs, developed in partnership with leading local and global technology companies. At the event with leaders in the local tech economy, World Business Chicago announced that City Colleges would be the newest anchor partner for its ThinkChicago program designed to attract and retain STEM talent in Chicago. The Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership (The Partnership) will assist eligible Launchpad participants by covering training costs and reaching out to employers searching to build a much-needed talent pipeline. “We are bringing an array of resources to bear to connect employers with motivated Chicagoans to fuel a growing and inclusive tech economy,” said Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot. “City Colleges’ investment in Kennedy-King’s Tech Launchpad makes technology education accessible and affordable to all Chicagoans. Combined with the contributions of our city and county workforce partners, we are building equitable paths of entry into lucrative tech careers.” The Tech Launchpad and related city and county efforts are driven by two imperatives: social equity and workforce equity. According to an environmental scan conducted by Northern Illinois University, 23 percent of residents living in the neighborhoods surrounding Kennedy-King College lack access to a computer and another 14 percent with a computer lack internet service. In addition, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2018) reveals an underrepresentation of women, Black, and Latinx professionals working in the information technology industry. For example, among U.S. software developers, just 3.9% are Black, 5.3% are Latinx, and 19% are female. The Tech Launchpad represents a
clear part of a regional workforce strategy for the future, and a key component of the City of Chicago’s “Forward Together” plan, the first Covid-19 recovery effort of any major U.S. city. “We thank the many partners who have come together to build a robust tech talent pipeline in Chicago,” said Chancellor Juan Salgado. “The Tech Launchpad will serve as a cornerstone in the effort to prepare Chicagoans from every neighborhood for high-demand tech careers.” “The Launchpad offers a young person growing up on the South Side who loves video games the chance to learn how to design those games and it offers parents who care about keeping their kids safe online the chance to pursue their own careers in cybersecurity, close to home and at low to no cost,” said President Gregory Thomas. “Our knowledgeable faculty and supportive staff, combined with the industry insights of our corporate IT partners, will help ensure Kennedy-King becomes the educational home for the tech-curious and tech passionate alike.” Kennedy-King College is now an approved training academy for Fortinet, Amazon, and Cisco and partners with companies including Google, Apple, Cisco, and SDI Presence for customized training and tech boot camps. New and forthcoming credit programs include: a cybersecurity AAS degree and certificates (launching Fall 2021), a game design AAS de-
gree (launching Fall 2021), software development (launching Fall 2021), a web development AAS degree and certificates (launching Fall 2022), and a networking systems AAS degree and certificates (launching Fall 2022). Courses may be offered in-person and remotely. SDI Presence has made a $1 million gift to Kennedy-King College to support the Tech LaunchPad and support its efforts to increase equity in the tech field, and has provided more than 20 City Colleges students with work-based learning experiences in the technology field. “We are also committed to the goal of addressing inequity in the tech sector and are all-in as a partner to City Colleges in preparing Chicago students for tech careers,” said David Gupta, founder and CEO of SDI Presence. World Business Chicago, the City’s public-private economic development agency, named City Colleges as the newest anchor partner for ThinkChicago, Chicago’s STEM talent attraction, and retention effort, joining fellow anchor partners: the City of Chicago and the University of Illinois System. ThinkChicago will continue to grow their entire portfolio of student immersion events and create a new dedicated program track for City Colleges students to explore career opportunities within the city’s thriving tech and innovation ecosystem. “There is incredible momentum www.citizennewspapergroup.com
underfoot in Chicago in many industries and sectors, especially technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship,” said Michael Fassnacht, President and CEO of World Business, and Chief Marketing Officer, City of Chicago. “Chicago’s status as a leading global city continues to rise. Today’s news that City Colleges is joining our ThinkChicago program as a new anchor ensures CCC students have access to promising career opportunities with local companies and startups who are thriving right here in our city.” Kennedy-King College has created an easy-to-use online form for people interested in enrolling in this curriculum and employers seeking access to this skilled workforce, which can be found at http:// techlaunchpad.ccc.edu/. The Partnership, a longtime partner of City Colleges of Chicago, offers federally-funded tuition vouchers (Individual Training Accounts) for students seeking training and professional credentials in a variety of sectors. Job seekers and employers can reach The Partnership by texting “techworks” to 474747 for more information about the Tech Launchpad, training opportunities, and The Partnership’s network of delegate agencies and services. “The Partnership specializes in advancing career pathway opportunities for this region’s high growth,
high-demand sectors, including Information Technology,” said Karin M. Norington-Reaves, CEO of The Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership. “We partner with a variety of small and large employers with IT needs and ensure they have access to a robust diverse pipeline of talented. This new Tech Launchpad, and its focus on expanding equity in this workforce sector, is an important addition to IT training opportunities in Chicago and aligns beautifully with our efforts. We are proud to support this work.” The Tech Launchpad is centered at a new IT training lab on the Kennedy-King College campus in Englewood. The 1,500 square feet, $840,000 training lab includes 20 advanced graphics computers, modularized workstations for independent and small group collaboration, network server racks for instruction, and space for game development. To remove financial barriers for students, Kennedy-King College will offer the Tech Launchpad Scholarship in addition to the Statesmen and Star Scholarships, as well as debt forgiveness to qualified returning students through the Fresh Start debt forgiveness program. A number of programs have been offered completely free through generous grant support. For more information about the Tech Launchpad, go to http:// techlaunchpad.ccc.edu/. Registration is underway now for Fall classes.

MONEY Do You Believe in These Three Common 401(k) Misconceptions?

(StatePoint) If you contribute a portion of your income to a 401(k), you may think you’re all set for a comfortable retirement. Experts say it’s important to take a closer look at these savings. To help you get started, Lincoln Financial Group is breaking down three common misconceptions about saving for retirement revealed in a recent survey of U.S. employees by Lincoln Financial and CivicScience: • True or False: “Saving enough to meet the employer match is enough to keep me on track for a comfortable retirement.” This one is (most likely) false! An employer match (if offered) is a good place to start, but if you really want to make sure you have enough of a nest egg to retire when and how you want, a good rule of thumb is to save at least 10 to 15 percent of your salary. • True or False: “Paying down my student loan debt as quickly as possible is more important than saving for my retirement.” This can be true…or false, depending on your situation. While you should not delay saving for retirement, it’s a good idea to speak with a financial professional to determine how to strategize paying off debt while also planning for your future. You can also use free tools like the debt calculator found at LincolnFinancial.com to help you make a plan for paying off debt.
• True or False: “I’ve thought about moving money from an old employer’s 401(k) into my current employer’s 401(k), but it seems like it would be too much of a hassle.” This one is false! While it is important to consider all options of your 401(k) platform prior to making a decision, the process for a rollover is typically very easy and brings multiple benefits. Instead of tracking investment selections, performance or statements for multiple accounts, for example, you’ll only have to monitor a single account. “While there are certainly still some misconceptions when it comes to saving for the future, the majority of those surveyed understand the importance of not delaying saving for later in their careers,” said Aaron Moore, senior vice president, Retirement Plan Client Engagement, Lincoln Financial Group. “This is cause for celebration, as delaying saving for retirement can have a significant impact on future savings. This is another reason why we are focused on working with employers to educate their employees so they can achieve the retirement they envision.” If you’re looking for more ways to help set yourself up for a financially secure future – here are three tips to keep in mind: 1. Check your account. It might sound simple, but logging in regularly (try for at least once a quarter) can help ensure you’re on track with your savings goal. Be sure to use the calculators and projection tools your retirement plan offers. 2. Update (or create) a goal. When you have a goal to work towards, research shows you’ll be more likely to increase your contributions, and therefore, increase your savings. 3. Meet with a professional. If your employer offers retirement consultants, schedule a meeting, or consider speaking with a financial professional, who can help you understand the full picture of your savings and where to focus your efforts. For more resources, tools and calculators, visit LincolnFinancial.com/retirement. A comfortable financial future is achievable with a strategy.
