STEAM Summer Camp Hosted On The West Side In Partnership With The Park District Continued from page 1 BY KATHERINE NEWMAN

Ladies of Virtue, a local non-profit organization, is currently hosting its STEAM in Action Leadership Summer Program at Douglas Park in North Lawndale. The summer program is being held in partnership with the Chicago Park District and is being funded in part by the Safe and Peaceful Communities Fund through a grant which Ladies of Virtue recently received. Ladies of Virtue has been partnering with the Chicago Park District and Douglas Park for five years. Ladies of Virtue chose to use the grant money they received from the Safe and Peaceful Communities Fund to strengthen the partnership they had with the park district and enhance the programming that they collectively provide during the summer. “[The Chicago Park District] mentioned to us that they didn’t have resources to take students on field trips and didn’t have a lot of creative activities that related to STEAM so

when we won the Safe and Peaceful Communities Fund grant, we really thought that this would be a phenomenal way to enhance our partnership with them by providing the students with new opportunities,” said Jamila Trimuel, founder and CEO of Ladies of Virtue. Ladies of Virtue is a non-profit organization that typically works with young women from ages 9 to 18 and prepares them for college, careers, and to become leaders in their communities. Typically, Ladies of Virtue works specifically with young women but the STEAM in Action Leadership Summer Program is open to both boys and girls. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math and the summer program aims to give the students exposure to all five of those career areas through handson activities and field trips. Students also participate in a weekly job readiness program where they learn about leadership, interview preparation, business etiquette, networking,

public speaking and work ethic, according to information provided by the Safe and Peaceful Communities Fund. “One thing we know is that 40 percent of our jobs in the future will be replaced by technology,” said Trimuel. “Oftentimes, our students, particularly our black and brown students, are being left behind on the training and the exposure when it comes to STEAM careers and even just on having the chance to be excited about math, science, and technology. So, that’s what we’re doing now, we are exposing them to those things that they would not have had the chance to do before.” Trimuel said she is a firm believer in early exposures for young people and that’s why field trips are a key aspect of the STEAM in Action Leadership Summer Program. Through the program, students are exposed to high paying career opportunities and STEAM concepts that they typically wouldn’t have access to. U.S. Department of Labor Awards Foundation $4.5 Million to Train Justice-Involved Young Adults for Restaurant Jobs The National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) recently announced it has been awarded a $4.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) to develop pathways from the justice system to employment for young adults. The grant is the largest in the history of the NRAEF and will launch the Foundation’s HOPES program (Hospitality Opportunities for People (re)Entering Society). To prepare and train young adults reentering society, the NRAEF will partner with Departments of Corrections, community-based organizations and state restaurant associations. These partner organizations will utilize an NRAEF training framework with individuals at participating correctional facilities as well as after release and during parole. Once a HOPES participant completes training, the individual will be placed in a local restaurant and/or foodservice position. Hospitality apprenticeships will also be available to participants who want to further advance their careers through such training. Funds from the grant will be used by the NRAEF to develop programs in Boston, Massachusetts; Chicago, Illinois; and the Richmond and Hampton Roads, Virginia area. All funds from the grant will develop pathways from

the justice system to employment for young adults. The NRAEF is already active in these cities with its Apprenticeship, Restaurant Ready and ProStart programs. With nearly one million unfilled jobs, the restaurant industry is well-suited to support the USDOL’s reentry initiative and has a long history of being both a first job opportunity for people from all backgrounds and of offering second chances to countless others. “We are honored to be part of

a national effort to create positive employment opportunities for young adults involved with the justice system,” said Rob Gifford, president of NRAEF. “The program fits perfectly with our mission to attract, empower and advance today’s and tomorrow’s restaurant workforce and is an excellent way for anyone seeking to get back on track to becoming a productive and responsible member of society.” The Prison Policy Initiative

found the unemployment rate for formerly incarcerated people is nearly five times higher than the unemployment rate for the general United States population. In late 2017, the USDOL also awarded the NRAEF a contract to develop the restaurant industry’s first registered restaurant management apprenticeship program. Currently more than 1,000 employees are enrolled nationwide. To learn more about the NRAEF, visit ChooseRestaurants.org.

14 Organizations Come Together For Summit in Chicago To End Childhood Hunger More than 13 million American children are at risk of going hungry on the weekends. That is one in six children who struggle to access food for the 65 hours they are not at school. Backpack programs across the country are sending thousands of children home with food for the weekend and making a positive impact in the lives of children, families and communities. For the first time, 14 organizations dedicated to ending childhood hunger in the U.S. came together at the ‘Great Minds Think Alike: Weekend Food Program Summit’ to share knowledge, resources and best practices to eliminate childhood hunger on the weekends. “The goal is to take a holistic approach to tackle childhood hunger on the weekends,” said Brooke Wiseman, Blessings in a Backpack. “By coming together, we can ensure that children in all communities across the country are getting the food they need to learn and grow.” Conversations were focused around meeting the nutritional needs of children, raising money and stewarding donors, and empowering volunteers for greater success. However, the grand takeaway from the Summit was the importance of making sure children have food to eat on Saturday and Sunday. “When people are skeptical, we remind them: It’s never wrong to feed a child,” said Chris Sloan, Second Harvest of Spokane, Washington. “No matter the circumstance, it’s out of the child’s control.” The Summit is a result of a thriving partnership between Blessings in a Backpack and Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. “There’s an obvious natural synergy between

the work that the No Kid Hungry campaign does in increasing access to school breakfast, lunch, after school, and summer meals and the work that backpack programs do to provide nutrition over the weekends,” said Emily Pia, No Kid Hungry. “We were proud to support the ‘Great Minds Think Alike’ Summit because we know we have a greater collective impact when we all join hands

and work together. Each of us has a strength to share in the fight to end childhood hunger.” Organizations in attendance at the ‘Great Minds Think Alike’ Summit include: A Child’s Hope International, At the Core, Blessings in a Backpack, Completely KIDS, End 68 Hours of Hunger, Food For Free, Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes, KidsPak, No Kid Hungry, Nourish Inc.,

Operation Food Search, Second Harvest, Snack Pak 4 Kids, and The Sheridan Story. “Kids can’t learn if they’re hungry, but they can change the world if they’re full,” said Dyron Howell, Snack Pak 4 Kids. Transformative 5G Technology Arrives BY STACY M. BROWN NNPA Newswire Correspondent @StacyBrownMedia

The next wave of technological evolution has arrived in the form of 5G, a new generation of mobile networks where at least four major telephone carriers in America – AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint – have put forth plans to introduce this year. Reportedly, AT&T has even started trials with 5G mobile hotspots in 12 cities. “The first generation was all about being able to just talk on the phone where ever you were,” said Candice Brackeen, the co-founder and executive director of Hillman Accelerator, which supports women and minority led tech companies in Cincinnati to provide them with access to education, seed funding, mentorship, and networks. “And then we had 2G that allowed us to use a little bit of text messaging.

Then, 3G was faster, we had the smartphone and suddenly everybody had it in their hand,” Brackeen said. “Then, we had 4G and now, the fifth generation is super-fast and responding in real time and we now have the ability to have devices speaking to each other,” she said. The technological advances are transformative and can significantly change what it means to be connected, Brackeen said. She noted that it can transform communities and also reshape the digital economy. Experts said when compared to 4G, 5G means far faster downloads, significantly reduced response times, and a massive impact on how everyone lives, works, and plays. “So, the internet is now going to work the way we all want it to work in a mobile version,” Brackeen said. “That’s kind of where we’re going. The ability for your car to really under-

stand what’s happening as we all aspire to have self-driving cars … those cars now will be able to interact with those around them and make real decisions,” she said. The importance of providing African Americans and others with information on 5G was underscored in June when Washington Informer Publisher Denise Rolark Barnes hosted a news forum without any grant or funding. Rolark Barnes said the said she held the forum because “this issue is important” and residents across the city, especially in the predominately African American communities that lie east of the Anacostia River, needed the information. The early reviews for 5G include CNET’s description: “On its surface, 5G is about astounding speeds and almost zero latency – the lag time between when your phone pings the network and when it responds. But on a global scale, www.thechicagocitizen.com

it represents political dominance and economic might.” Earlier this year, Samsung’s first 5G smartphone in the U.S. became available exclusively on Verizon for a limited time. According to a news release, Verizon revealed the names of 20 cities that join Chicago and Minneapolis where customers will get access to its 5G Ultra-Wideband network this year, with more to come throughout 2019. Those cities, which include Washington, D.C.; Charlotte; Boston; Atlanta; Cincinnati; Cleveland; Columbus, Ohio; Des Moines, Iowa; Denver; Detroit; Houston; Indianapolis; Kansas City; Little Rock, Arkansas; Memphis; Phoenix; Providence, Rhode Island; San Diego; and Salt Lake City; are the world’s first to get Verizon’s 5G Ultra-Wideband mobility service. The bottom line is that everyone should be excited about 5G, Brackeen said.

“I’ve got children. And for me, when the internet is slow, sometimes I don’t have happy children in the house when the internet is slow – we’re not learning, homework doesn’t get done,” Brackeen said. “So we can all be excited about reliability. And I know that I just upgraded my house within the last 60 days to 5G. And, you know, the video games work faster. My streaming services work faster. And I’m not having any downtime,” Brackeen said. “I can work from home versus working from my office where there is fiber. And so the reliability is what I think is what we should all be excited about. I think that’s what we should be most excited about is the reliability,” she said. To celebrate the transformative new technology, officials have launched “Faces of 5G” with the hopes of educating the public on the innovations already taken place today and the possibilities of tomorrow

A Comfy and Functional Closet Helpful tips from Fashion Consultant Christie Grays of I Am CHIC Your home should be your happy place. Whether it’s coming to that nice plug-in scent you love, your comfortable sofa, or all those carefully hand-picked throw pillows on your bed, you are happy to be home. It should give you solace and peace. Fingers crossed that this is true for you. Even if you don’t have your dream home yet, parts of your home should certainly give you comfort, one place being your closet. We go to our closet every day, and that’s typically when we are getting our day started. Wanting to start each day with positive vibes, let’s ensure we have a comfy and functional closet. You should not spend more than one (1) minute determining what you will wear each day...your clothes should speak (not literally, of course) to you. “Hi, wear me,” said an awesome shirt and pant combo. In order for your clothes to speak to you, they need to see you and you, them. Here are 5 steps to achieve this. #1 - Remove everything you don’t wear. #2 - Remove everything you can’t wear. #3 - Remove everything that is discolored or with stains. #4 - Remove everything that isn’t attire related...hair dryers, towels, weights, etc. #5 - Be thrilled with how much space you’ve regained!!! Now, what do you do with the items you removed? #1 - Sell online. I average $100+ a month in online sales of items I simply don’t want anymore. #2 - Sell online. I’m clearly a big fan of this. However, if you are 1 size, (just 1 size) away from getting back into a size, develop a strategy to get back into them, but keep them out of your closet until then. #3 – Recycle as a dust cloth. #4 - Find a better home within your home. #5 - Be thrilled to see your clothes!

Brutus and Butch hair products is giving back a portion of its natural and organic product sales to the LGBTQ and the at-risk youth community struggling with gender identity issues. “My years in the industry has compelled me to support the people in the LGBTQ community, who have made a major impact on my life,” said Brutus Butch founder Gwen Lonigro. “It’s a thank you and acknowledgement to their continuous contributions over the years and a vehicle for change. “After 30 years in the industry and now as a salon owner, I decided to create a unique hair care product line that I’m proud of and helps people have the strength to be unique individuals.” Frustrated with polymer-heavy commercial products she encountered – Lonigro was inspired by the pure essential oils used by her Indonesian parents. Brutus & Butch’s products were conceived and includes a Clean Shampoo, Clean Conditioner and Gembira Oil Elixir Vitae, which is the company’s best seller. All products are a formulation of green, vegan, natural and organic ingredients with no fillers. “You only need a small drop to have incredible results. The more you use, the better your hair looks. It

replenishes with essential nutrients. It’s light, doesn’t leave a residue, not oily and creates a better hair shaft, especially for people with aging or chemically damaged hair.” Brutus and Butch has two main goals – give clients gorgeous hair using products that are safe and make donations to the LGBTQ community on a local and national level. “I believe giving nourishes the soul. I really want to help create love, peace and tolerance for all, and hope my hair care line of products help to achieve this goal. My hair care products serve the LGBTQ community with the tag line, ‘because we are who we are’, says it all,” remarks Lonigro. Her line of products can also be used on your skin, face, arms or legs. So far, the company has loyal customers in England and across the U.S. For more information about Brutus & Butch, or to order products, please visit brutusandbutch.com.

Thank you, Erica, for being brave enough to want to tackle this issue in a way that we all can understand.” Believing in Myself enlightened the message for children to embrace their beauty from within and outside. Despite obstacles, Believing in Myself motivates and encourages little girls to be all they can be, regardless of their features or where they plan to go in life. I am America’s Most Wanted aligns with Believing in Myself for boys of color. “It is one of the 1st books for little boys and young men to flip the stereotype of “America’s Most Wanted” from a negative to a positive. I truly believe that my books help to build up the confidence, inspiration, and dreams of our young African American leaders to change and alter how they see themselves and drive change in a country ruled by stereotype and misperception. Considering all the negative factors and outside attacks that people of color face (like what the world witnessed as we watched “When They See Us” on Netflix), we have no choice

but to ensure that our young leaders grow to know that they are America’s Most Wanted and they should always Believe in Themselves,” Pullen said. Pullen uses every tool at her disposal to make her stories come alive and matter. Coupled with colorful and exuberant illustrations, she hopes that, through the magic of children’s books, children will be inspired in the most positive and powerful ways. Furthermore, society at large can glean from Believing in Myself and I am America’s Most Wanted the opportunity to embrace all children, oust negative stereotypes and instill hope and love for a better world. About the author Author, national public speaker, and entrepreneur Erica Pullen has a unique perspective into what it takes to build a successful career in self-publishing. CALENDAR Black Enterprise Is Bringing Black Men XCEL To Miami Aug. 28-Sept. 1

27th Annual Antique Tool Show and Sale Sunday, August 4, 2019 9AM – 1PM Members of the Early American Industries Association (EAIA) and the Mid-West Tools Collectors Association (M-WTCA) will be holding their annual Antique Tool Show and Sale at the Garfield Farm Museum on Sunday, August 4th from 9am – 1pm. This is the only joint show by these two organizations in the mid-west open to the public. Typically, over 30 different collectors will have their tools on display and for sale. Garfield Farm & Inn Museum looks at the settlement era of northern Illinois, that was a time traditions arose around the seasonal cycle of farming. In that spirit, Garfield Farm’s calendar of events has created its own traditions that are approaching nearly 30 years or more in age. The Antique Tool Show is just such an annual tradition paying tribute every first Sunday in August to the craftsmanship and inventiveness of Americans since the 1700s. These collectors value and marvel at the simple hand tools many whose design endured for centuries. Garfield Farm Museum established this annual show to help educate the public with the realities of America’s founding. Hand tools were what built and shaped America. In the 1840s as factories arose, handcrafted items became massed produced but not in the way mass production is envisioned today. The hand tools that individual craftsmen used simply transitioned to the early factories. Waterpower might have made it possible for a number of lathes to be powered at once but hand tools were used to make any turnings. Blacksmiths were becoming old school in the mid-19th century, as the profession of mechanic became the high tech of its day. Mechanics for the steam age to manufacture as well as maintain locomotives and lake and ocean going steamers needed even more specialized hand tools to produce the precision needed. Tool and die makers became the top hand tool workers of the 19th and early 20th century.

Members of the Early American Industries Association (EAIA) and the Mid-West Tools Collectors Association (M-WTCA) will be holding their annual Antique Tool Show and Sale at the Garfield Farm Museum on Sunday, August 4th from 9am – 1pm.

Their inventiveness and skills would create the power tools that society depends upon today. Appropriately, some of the most avid collectors one can meet at the Antique Tool Show are retired highly skilled tool and die makers. Many are the last generation to use hand tools and the first to use computerized machines to make the complex machines of mass production today. Yet fine craftsmanship has not disappeared as thousands of hobbyists that enjoy working with wood, avidly seek out antique tools. Such tools that might be made of higher quality materials than what can be found on the market today or are no longer made but are still needed to reproduce certain designs or affects in furniture. The Antique Tool Show is thus an opportunity to talk with such experienced individuals who might have worked with the type of tool one purchases. The public is invited to bring a tool they cannot identify as many of the collectors will know the answer. This is the only joint meeting in Illinois of the EAIA and M-WTCA that the public is invited to attend. Opportunities at the show to become a member of the organizations will give access to their regional and national meetings. Tours of the 1846 teamster inn and tavern

HOME When Temperatures Get High, Keep Your Bills Low (StatePoint) Do higher temperatures have to mean higher energy bills? The answer is no. There are numerous ways to keep your home cool and bills low in summer. After a few months of disuse, it is vital to check that your air conditioning system is still working in an efficient and optimal manner. If you have a central air conditioning system, for peace of mind, you might want to have your system checked by an HVACR professional. In order to save, be sure to shop around for special deals, which are not difficult to find for seasonal preventive maintenance. Understand however, that the proficiency of HVACR technicians varies greatly. When searching for the right HVACR technician for your home, one way to make certain that the job will be done properly and effectively is by hiring a professional certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE), the nation’s largest certification body for HVACR technicians. NATE-certified technicians are qualified to properly install and service equipment, which means maximum home comfort and energy savings. Once a technician has inspected your system for efficiency, there are a number of things you can do to keep energy bills low: • Clean your air filters. Check them every couple of weeks and change them at least twice in the season, or as directed by the manufacturer. • Don’t obstruct airflow around air conditioner units -- keep them clear of plants and debris. • Raise the thermostat about 5 degrees. Each degree you raise the thermostat will save you a percentage off your cooling energy bill. • Compare energy bills from last year. If your costs have significantly increased, simply contact a qualified HVACR technician -- he or she can help determine the source of the problem.
