NEWS briefly EDUCATION

ILLINOIS STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF CACFP FOR FISCAL YEAR 2019 The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) recently announced the availability of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) for fiscal year 2019. CACFP is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by ISBE as part of a suite of programs to provide children and families access to healthy meals. “The Child and Adult Care Food Program ensures children in day care and after-school programs who may not otherwise have regular access to healthy food are getting the proper nutrition they need to fuel their developing bodies and brains,” said State Superintendent of Education Tony Smith, Ph.D. “More than one in 10 people in Illinois, a third of them children, are food insecure. Physical health and nutrition affect our ability to learn, focus, and grow. ISBE is proud to administer nutrition programs that help ensure all children have what they need to thrive.”

DENTAL MISSION OF MERCY BRINGS SMILES TO THOSE IN NEED The Illinois State Dental Society Foundation opened its doors to a giant, two-day free dental clinic at the Bank of Springfield Center in Springfield recently, with the goal of treating underserved patients in dire need of dental care. At the Mission of Mercy, or “MOM,” more than 600 children and adults each received around $1,000 worth of free dental treatment on day one of this charitable event. During the two-day free clinic, more than 1,000 volunteers from Illinois provided basic dental care to patients in need. The team of volunteers included dentists, hygienists, dental assistants, dental students, pharmacists, and a large group of other volunteers. Both adults and children received care. LAW & POLITICS

DUCKWORTH, MURRAY AND 20 COLLEAGUES INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO END THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S PRACTICE OF DETAINING AND SHACKLING PREGNANT WOMEN U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) and 20 of their colleagues introduced the Stop Shackling and Detaining Pregnant Women Act this week to protect the health and well-being of pregnant and young women in custody by establishing new standards of care and transparency and prohibiting the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from shackling pregnant women in its custody. “The Trump Administration’s practice of shackling and detaining pregnant women must stop immediately,” said Duckworth. “This policy puts mothers and their infants at risk while also denying these women the essential maternal care they deserve. I’m proud to join Senator Murray and 20 colleagues in introducing this legislation that will set new standards for the treatment of pregnant and young women in detention.” In May, the Illinois legislature passed a similar bill to keep pregnant women out of jail while awaiting trial for nonviolent offenses.

Summer BizCamp Comes To A Close For Chicago Teens Continued from page 1 BY KATHERINE NEWMAN

The Network For Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) recently concluded their Summer BizCamp for Chicago’s youth. The two-week program, held at the Illinois Department of Innovation and Technology in the Loop, focused on developing the students’ soft skills and opening their minds to many different entrepreneurial opportunities and ideas. NFTE is a non-profit with offices across the country including one in Chicago. The organization operates with the goal of helping young people from under-resourced communities activate their entrepreneurial mindset and builds business skills. The Summer BizCamp focuses even further on this goal by helping students to develop entrepreneurial skills, like how to build and grow and business, and soft skills, like communication and problem-solving, that will be useful through every walk of life. “As an organization, our focus is on building soft skills, and I would actually

prefer to call them power skills. Its a huge aspect to what we do at NFTE and we spend a considerable amount of time and resources studying successful entrepreneurs, how they think and how they become successful,” said Scott Nasatir, senior director of programs for NFTE Chicago. There are eight pillars, or skills, of the entrepreneurial mindset that the Summer BizCamp was focused on. The pillars include initiative and self-reliance, flexibility and adaptability, communication and collaboration, creativity and innovation, critical thinking and problem solving, future origination, opportunity recognition, and comfort with risk. “All these characteristics that we believe are essential for you to be college and career ready and if we are alba o build these skills and build capacity around these skills we really think that it’s something that is going to catapult them in whatever they are going to do in their life,” said Nasatir. Over the course of the two-week BizCamp students are transformed into young businessmen and women and the program ends with students presenting

their own business plans that they have been researching and building over the course of the camp. “The students have come a long way from not knowing what an entrepreneur is to learning how to operate a business and I find that pretty interesting because in just two short weeks kids learn so much information that they can use here in the BizCamp and that they can take to the real world,” said Danny Gray, NFTE Summer BizCamp instructor. Now that the BizCamp is over, students are able to return to their communities with an activated entrepreneurial mindset and a better understanding of how to get from point A to point B when it comes to owning and operating a business. “The most valuable and interesting thing I learned from the camp, and basically how I’ve grown from it, is how to take leadership and I’ve learned about my financial problems,” said Michael Riddle, a 15-year-old student who participated in BizCamp. “I can use all the things I learned and put them together to make something new and make a change that will make my whole community a better place.”

Progress On Construction Announced Related Midwest recently joined the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) and Chicago Public Library (CPL) to announce the record construction progress and topping out of Taylor Street Apartments and the Roosevelt Branch Library— an innovative co-located housing and library development. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) and developed by Related Midwest, with W.E. O’Neil as a construction partner, the Taylor Street Apartments and Roosevelt Branch Library will marry the two hubs of community and enrichment by bringing them under one roof. “We are extremely proud of the progress we’ve made to bring the Taylor Street Apartments and Roosevelt Branch Library to the Near West Side neighborhood with the speed, rigorous attention to detail and quality this important project deserves,” said Related Midwest President Curt Bailey. “The synergy between affordable, modern housing and access to educational resources will help strengthen the community. We’re honored to work with the Chicago Housing Authority and the Chicago Public Library to create a space where families can live, learn and thrive.” With two distinct civic services in one building, the Taylor Street Apartments and Roosevelt Branch Library is envisioned as a new community focal point for the neighborhood. Staggered on the site along West Taylor and Ada Streets, the building will provide rooftop

green space, communal areas, and floorto-ceiling windows for residential units. The library will offer soaring open spaces designed for children, teenagers, and adults, bringing vital public space to the city’s Near West Side. “The Chicago Housing Authority is proud to be part of this innovative partnership with Chicago Public Library that will provide residents of all ages with quality housing options and community anchor of world-class design,” said CHA CEO Eugene E. Jones, Jr. “As these beautiful structures move toward completion under the leadership of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, CHA continues to be focused on providing housing and other opportunities that enhance the lives of our residents while helping to build strong, vibrant neighborhoods.” The Taylor Street Apartments and Roosevelt Branch library will offer a range of traditional library programs, such as book clubs for seniors and cultural programming, as well as technology and digital literacy courses in order to prepare Chicago communities for a changing skill market. Computer classes and one-on-one coaching from CyberNavigators to build technology skills for adults and seniors will be available to all residents. Staff will be trained to connect job-seekers to best in-class career services provided by workforce development organizations and educational institutions. CPL will continue to partner with expert

workforce organizations to deliver trainings on additional skills, such as resume writing, interview prep and industry-specific skills. Children and families will access early childhood learning spaces, the Teacher in the Library program and the YOUmedia program, which provides teens with access to technology, resources, and classes that inspire exploration, creativity and learning. “Libraries serve as community anchors, making knowledge and learning accessible for everyone,” said CPL Commissioner Brian Bannon. “This new development, combining a public library with affordable housing will help to sustain this strong neighborhood, and provide a place for all community residents to gather, share and succeed.” “This project fusing housing and a library is an incredibly invigorating milestone for our community,” said 28th Ward Alderman Jason Ervin. “The impact of this of this investment is paramount as it demonstrates to our community members that your zip code or income level is not a barrier to accessing quality housing options and educational community resources.” The Taylor Street Apartments and Roosevelt Branch Library continue the redevelopment of the Roosevelt Square mixed-income community, bringing a total of 73 apartments, including 37 CHA units, 29 affordable units and seven market rate units.

Surgeons and their surgical teams from across Illinois are calling on Governor Rauner to sign SB 2419, which will insure national certification is maintained when surgical first assistants and surgical technologists renew their licensure with the State of Illinois.

Surgeons and their teams call on Rauner to sign SB 2419 Surgeons and their surgical teams from across the state are calling on Governor Rauner to sign SB 2419, which will insure national certification is maintained when surgical first assistants and surgical technologists renew their licensure with the State of Illinois. “Surgical first assistants act as the right hand man to a surgeon, in a role historically filled by another physician or resident. As more complex surgeries began being performed at community hospitals and the number of hours overtime hours a resident worked became more restricted, the demand for highly trained surgical assistants exploded,” explained Illinois Surgical Assistant Association James Presley. Many surgical assistants, like Pressley, are veterans who received their initial training as surgical assistants while working as medics in the military. Surgical assistants and technologists have been regulated through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation since 2003. In order to obtain a state license, an individual has to have graduated from an approved medical education program and be certified by a

national accrediting body in surgical assisting or surgical technology, which requires them to complete so many hours in surgery, complete an approved medical education program and pass a national exam. “However there was a glitch in the law, in that the original intent was that surgical assistants and technologists have to be certified to obtain their initial license AND to maintain that certification in order to renew the license, however the renewals process was set by administrative rule and maintaining that certification is not currently required by the State, which could put patient safety at tremendous risk,” said State Representative Dan Burke (D-Chicago), who sponsored the original legislation to regulate the professions and is the house sponsor of SB 2419. “To not require a profession, that has such intricate patient contact and requires such complex skills, to stay abreast of their field, is bad public policy. Surgical robotics has evolved exponentially over the past 15 years and I rely on surgical assistants to perform my most complicated cases,” said Dr. Francisco Garcini, who performs robotic gynecologic procedures at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

“Without proper sterilization techniques in the operating room, patient infections can easily occur can quickly escalate. Surgical technologists prepare the operating room (including the sterile field) along with the surgical instrumentation and supplies, as well as pass instrumentation and prepare and manage surgical equipment during surgery,” explained Chris Topel, Director of the Surgical Technology Program at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield. “However once they pass their initial certifying exam, technology continues to change and it is important that surgical technologists continue to learn throughout their careers. The continuing education that ongoing certification requires will insure this, otherwise, without it, the State is just attesting to the fact that they paid for their renewal, with no enhanced knowledge.” “Surgical skill is of great importance with assistance in surgical cases, as unforeseen complications can develop quickly. I have had many difficult procedures that likely wouldn’t have ended as well if it had not been for the skill of my surgical assistant. We urge the Governor to sign SB 2419,” said Dr. Tracy

www.thechicagocitizen.com

Vera, an OB/GYN who uses surgical assistants on a variety of cases at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, including cesareans, and gynecologic surgeries such as laparoscopies and hysterectomies. “The general public can’t pick their surgical assistants and they should be certified regularly as are other medical specialties. They are a key component of the medical care team,” added Dr. Rebecca Kuo-Ryan, an orthopedic spine surgeon who practices at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and Morris Hospital. “People only come in contact with Surgical Assistants when they or their loved ones are unconscious during surgery,” said chief sponsor of SB 2419, Sen. Pamela Althoff (R-Crystal Lake), “We need to insure that the whole surgical team is up to speed on the latest technological advances.” About ISAA The Illinois Surgical Assistant Association (ISAA) was formed in 1998 for surgical assistants to have a voice at the state government level. However, since that time, ISAA has grown to become a source for surgical assistants looking for additional educational and networking opportunities.

How Many Americans are Finding Affordable Housing With the cost of housing continuing to rise faster than wages, it’s no wonder that many Americans nationwide are struggling to make ends meet. Luckily, solutions already exist to address the affordable housing shortage, say experts. For example, more than 22 million people in the U.S. now live in manufactured housing -- homes built to a federal standard in factories and placed on a homeowner’s land or on rented lots in manufactured home communities, according to the Manufactured Housing Institute (MHI). In many parts of the country, homes like these are the least expensive kind of housing available without a government subsidy. The cost to buy a manufactured home averages about $70,600, compared with $286,000 for a single-family site-built home, not including land costs. In response to

growing market demand, almost 93,000 new manufactured homes were built in the U.S. in 2017, an approximate 15 percent increase over 2016, according to MHI, but this is still not nearly enough to meet the nation’s affordable housing needs, according to experts. Advocates say that zoning restrictions and other rules and regulations in many areas are preventing manufactured housing from closing the gap -as certain jurisdictions only allow manufactured housing in locations far from town centers and

other jurisdictions have considered banning them altogether. “Part of this bias may be based on the negative stereotype of earlier generations of manufactured housing, however, today, our homes are built with quality construction materials to meet rigorous federal standards for safety, installation and construction,” says Richard Jennison, president and CEO of MHI. What’s more, today’s manufactured housing includes features that today’s homebuyers want, such as luxury bathrooms, vaulted ceilings and

FASHION Back-to-School Shoe Shopping: Finding the Right Fit As children all over the country count down the last days of summer, parents are checking off their to-do lists to make sure everyone is ready to head back to school. While binders, calculators and combination locks may be required, new shoes are almost always at the top of the list to accommodate growing feet and new fashion trends. According to Laryssa Grant, women’s buyer for national family footwear retailer Rack Room Shoes, this season’s sneaker styles give nod to classic designs and are sure to complement any school wardrobe. Here, Grant shares how back-toschool fashion trends can translate to different age groups: • Preschool: Key factors in finding footwear for preschoolers are comfort and function. Shoe to Try: Adidas Baseline sneakers are available for the tiniest of feet -- in infant sizes and up — and also have Velcro fasteners for easy-on

and easy-off. The traditional design, white with three black signature stripes, has been updated with new accent colors, from metallic gold to mint green. Styles are available in children’s and adult sizes so Mom and Dad can match their mini me. • Elementary School: Children entering elementary school tend to start expressing their preferences through clothing and footwear. And many are keen to sport their favorite color through accessories and outfits. Shoe to Try: The Nike Tanjun offers a plethora of kids-only colors, from coral to navy, in this popular and functional style. With many options to choose from, children will be able to coordinate favorite outfits with ease, while allowing their personalities to shine. • Middle School: Middle school students may not be ready to embrace adult styles, but many may have grown out of character designs. So, jeans and denim accessories are always a great fashion choice, offering lots of versatility.

Shoe to Try: Classic sneaker styles from PUMA and Converse can help pull together a fashion-forward athletic look that might include a favorite pair of jeans or a denim jacket layered over a jersey top. • High School: By high school, many teens are eager to incorporate the latest pop culture trends, such as bold and bright hues, metallic accents and ice cream pastels. Shoe to Try: For those seeking an effortlessly cool style, Vans is a great go-to brand. PUMA RS-100 Roland and RS-0 Roland drop globally on #808DAY Roland Corporation has teamed up with the global sports brand PUMA to unbox a second new TR-808-inspired sneaker, the PUMA RS-100 Roland. Roland’s partnership with PUMA kicked off earlier this year with the unveiling of their first sneaker collaboration, PUMA’s RS-0 Roland, also inspired by the legendary 808 drum machine. PUMA’s RS-100 Roland follows the story of reinvention—inspired by the past, shaped by the colorful histories of both brands and reimagined for the future. While the RS-0 Roland is a complete reboot of PUMA’s classic ‘80s R-System line of running sneakers, the new RS-100 Roland retains a more retro look but decked in modern materials. The upper of the RS-100 Roland features a vibrant orange suede Formstrip with white reflective edges amidst a combination of white-red pebble leather, black ripstop nylon panels and yellow suede. PUMA and Roland branding can be found on the tongue label, the footbed and the anodized metal hangtag. “Rhythm Composer TR-808, Computer Composer” is printed on the heel. A PUMA and Roland logo is

printed on the footbed while the outsole features lines that mimic the lights on a synthesizer. All colors and detailing represent ‘80s retro hues found on a Roland TR808 drum machine. Unveiled last spring, the RS-0 Roland, also inspired by the gamechanging TR-808 drum machine, features premium leather black upper, micro perf vents, 6mm flat, reflective laces, reflective midsole details and signature TR-808 colors – red, orange and yellow – on the Formstrip. Familiar notes like “Rhythm Composer” and “Bass Drum” accent the midsole while the orange hue continues to the translucent rubber outsole. PUMA and Roland branding can be found on the tongue label, footbed and the anodized metal hangtag. This exciting collaboration extends Roland’s commitment to innovation and continuing

to shape the sound of modern music, setting the standards in music technology for the world to follow. For PUMA, it continues to enrich their stories of reinvention by partnering with influential and creative brands, individuals, and institutions that strive to push culture forward through innovation in design, style, technology, and more. Both the RS-0 and RS-100 Roland sneakers drop globally on August 8, 2018, internationally known as #808DAY. The iconic TR-808 drum machine is celebrated for its legendary status and credited by many as the spark that lit the flame of hip-hop music worldwide. RS-0 and RS-100 sneakers can be purchased starting August 8, 2018, at PUMA.com, at PUMA stores and through leading retailers.

Every procrastinator is familiar with the downsides of last-minute shopping — parking woes, stress-induced headaches and paying premiums for needed items. But these hassles and expenses are avoidable, say experts. “It’s all about being prepared to shop from your mobile device at any time to jump on amazing time-limited deals,” says Sarah Ward, lead editorial stylist at online retailer, zulily. “In fact, we found that 51 percent of people purchase gifts one to three months in advance.” Now, with so many shopping options, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. To manage your everyday as well as special gift-giving occasions, get savvy with these shopping tips from Ward. • Mobilize yourself. Download favorite shopping apps so they’re easily accessible. The next time you have five minutes of downtime, browse for items you’re inspired by and will want to gift down the line. • Be an in-the-know techie! Most retailers offer channels for staying in-the-know on the next big deal, helping you take advantage of special finds when the price is right. Pop onto your favorite retailers’ Facebook pages and subscribe to their Facebook Live notifications. For instance, online retailer zulily encourages its shoppers to sign up for daily emails, mobile push notifications and Facebook Messenger alerts tailored to their personal shopping desires. The site also allows you to “heart” brands so you get alerted the next time a sale runs featuring the brand you love, and its “notify me” feature lets you know when a desired product is back in-stock. • Keep a gift closet. When it comes to meaningful gift giving, you can never be too on-the-ball. While shopping, always keep in

www.thechicagocitizen.com

mind your nearest and dearest, even if their birthdays or special occasions are months away. When you encounter an item that’s particularly unique or especially “her” or “him” -- whether it’s llama salt and pepper shakers, a new blender for her famous margaritas, a STEM toy or emoji slippers – it’s always worthwhile to buy the gift while it’s available at a great price, and then stash it until the time is right. This is especially true of personalized gifts that may require advance planning. “I love purchasing gifts for my nieces and nephews from zulily in advance of Halloween and the holidays, since I can shop great deals before they’re traditionally available,” says Ward. • Shop aggressively. Leverage special events offering deals on fashion, kitchen and home supplies and fun finds for kids that you want and know you’ll need down the line. For example, happening July 23-27 is the inaugural zulily Thrill Week, the retailer’s biggest sale of the year. For five days, the site and mobile app will feature extreme daily deals, such as a new wardrobe for the price of a scarf, as well as “Dashes for the Deal” -- timelimited savings on products such as designer sunglasses for $29.99 or a luxurious cashmere shawl for $19.99. In culmination of Thrill Week, on July 28, zulily will award a total of 100 shopping sprees worth $150 to randomly selected winners. Since the site launches over 100 sales a day, typically lasting 72 hours, they can offer great products at incredible prices. So, you can prepare ahead and be cool, calm and collected before the next big event while friends and family are last-minute-shopping. Save time, money and avoid stress. Let new tech tools help you become a year-round savvy shopper.

EVENT DETAILS: What: Antique Tool Show & Sale When: August 5th from 9am to 1pm Who: Garfield Farm Museum Cost: $6 adult/$2 children under 12. Where: GPS only: 3N016 Garfield Road Campton Hills, IL 60175 Members of the Early American Industries Association (EAIA) and the Mid-West Tools Collectors Association (M-WTCA) will be holding their annual Antique Tool Show and Sale at the Garfield Farm Museum on Sunday, August 5th from 9am – 1pm. This is the only joint show by these two organizations in the mid-west open to the public. Typically, over 30 different collectors will have their tools on display and for sale. Garfield Farm Museum established this annual show to help educate the public with the realities of America’s founding. Hand tools were what built and shaped America. In the 1840s as factories arose, handcrafted items became massed produced but not in the way mass production is envisioned today. The hand tools that individual craftsmen used simply transitioned to the early factories. Waterpower might have made it possible for a number of lathes to be powered at once but hand tools were used to make any turnings. Blacksmiths were becoming old school in the mid-19th century, as the profession of mechanic became the high tech of its day. Mechanics for the steam age to manufacture as well as maintain locomotives and lake and ocean going steamers needed even more specialized hand tools to produce the precision needed. Tool and die makers became the top hand tool workers of the 19th and early 20th century. Their inventiveness and skills would create the power tools that society depends upon today. Appropriately, some of the most avid collectors one can meet at the Antique Tool Show are retired highly skilled tool and die makers. Many are the last generation to use hand tools and the first to use computerized machines to make the complex machines of mass production today. Yet fine craftsmanship has not disappeared as thousands of hobbyists that enjoy working with wood, avidly seek out antique tools. Such tools that might be made of higher quality materials than what can be found on the market today or are no longer made but are still needed to reproduce certain designs or affects in furniture. The Antique Tool Show is thus an opportunity to talk with such experienced individuals who might have worked with the type of tool one purchases. The public is invited to bring a tool they cannot identify as many of the collectors will know the answer. Opportunities at the show to become a member of the organizations will give access to their regional and national meetings. Tours of the 1846 teamster inn and tavern begin at 11 a.m. and continue after the show until 4 p.m. Light refreshments will be available. Admission for adults is $6 and $2 for children 12 years and under. Garfield Farm Museum is a historically intact former prairie farmstead and teamster inn being restored by volunteers as a 1840s working farm. The museum is located 5 miles west of Geneva, IL off ILL Rt. 38 on Garfield Road. For more information call (630)584-8485. E-mail info@garfieldfarm.org or visit our website at www.garfieldfarm.org
