WTTW TO PRODUCE LOCAL CONTENT AND EVENTS FOR ‘MUHAMMAD ALI’ WTTW and its sister classical music radio station WFMT will produce and present special local content in connection with the upcoming fourpart documentary series from Ken Burns, MUHAMMAD ALI, at 7 p.m. beginning on Sunday, Sept. 19 on all WTTW platforms. Parts two, three, and four of the series will air on successive nights at 8:00 pm. MUHAMMAD ALI was directed by Ken Burns and written and co-directed by Sarah Burns and David McMahon. The film follows the life of one of the most consequential men of the 20th century, a threetime heavyweight boxing champion who captivated billions of fans with his combination of speed, agility, power in the ring, his charm, wit and outspokenness outside of it. At the height of his fame, Ali challenged Americans’ racial prejudices, religious biases, and notions about what roles celebrities and athletes play in our society, and inspired people all over the world with his message of pride and self-affirmation. Ali was a Chicago South Side resident from roughly the mid-1960s through the late 1970s, a defining period in his life. Having converted to Islam in 1964, he claimed conscientious objector status in refusing to serve in Vietnam. Ali was immediately stripped of his title, banned from boxing, and convicted of draft evasion, a felony for which he could have served five years in prison. While his case was on appeal, Ali made the city of Chicago his home, and became more involved with the Nation of Islam and the civil rights movement, married, started a family, and eventually staged a comeback. WTTW will explore these watershed moments in Ali’s life with a companion website, wttw.com/ali. WFMT will publish an interview on Tuesday, Sept. 21, with Jahlil Beats, composer of the score for MUHAMMAD ALI, on wfmt.com. WFMT will also air a November 1975 Studs Terkel interview with Ali from the Studs Terkel Radio Archive.

The National Black MBA Association will host its 43rd annual conference from Tuesday-Saturday, Sept. 14-18, at McCormick Place. The National Black MBA Association was founded in Chicago 51 years ago with a mission to create opportunities for Black people to advance in their careers and ensure that companies are looking for pipelines for Black talent. Joe Handy, president and CEO of the National Black MBA Association, felt a pull on him from a passion and a necessity in the community to help more people look at different career paths and wanted to join the organization. Throughout the years the organization has evolved to understand that not everyone takes the conventional way to a career. There are people who look at entrepreneurship as a career path. The goal of the National Black MBA Association is to help those who matriculate through college and those who are in a career who want to advance to a higher level, also entrepreneurs who are looking to develop themselves and build their business. “One of the interesting things we’ve discovered is 90% of Black

owned businesses are sole proprietors in the sense that they don’t have any employees. What we want to do is step into that space, and we want to help those individuals grow their business, because we know as Black businesses excel they’ll hire Black people,” Handy said. Helping black businesses grow so they will hire Black people creates an ecosystem where business owners are able to reach back and pull people up with them, it has a generational impact and ensures they are set up for success. The conference gives companies the opportunity to see the Black talent from the community and allows members of the organization and conference attendees to see companies that have made a commitment to hiring Black talent. Attendees can upload their resume prior to the conference and there are also opportunities to hire on the spot. “We have a number of successes in the sense of people that are now seasoned executives in their career that found their first job or started at that company by way of matching or getting that job at the conference,” Handy said. Attendees will receive information about the wraparound services available from the organization, scholarships it provides, and have the

opportunity to hear from speakers. In talking to the founders of the organization, Handy heard their commitment to Black people and they wanted to ensure Black people were getting looked at for job advancment. He added, in many cases Black people haven’t been in a position where they could advance, something that was prevalent 51 years and still is today. Handy said the organization wants to make sure companies live beyond the hashtag, after the tragic events of last year. Now, the organization needs to make sure those companies show the commitment to Black people they purported to have. Given the buying power of Black people, it is incumbent to make those companies fulfill their commitment. When it comes to what companies can do to improve, Handy said, they should do what they say and be authentic. “When you commit to advancing, when you commit to our community show it not only in a media schpeel, show it by the actions and elevation within your company,” he said. Interested in attending this year’s conference? Email media@nbmbaa. org. And also an email address will be selected at random to receive a complimentary registration.

Rep. Danny K. Davis Announce Approximately 1 Billion In Health And Human Services Grants CHICAGO - Rep. Danny K. Davis announced the grant awards for head start programs, healthcare services, mental health initiatives, and social programs, among other grants. This year alone, the United States Department of Health and Human Services has or will award $925,178,823 in grants to 62 organizations in the 7th Congressional District of Illinois. According to the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, these grants will fund existing programs, new initiatives, and research. Davis said, “Poverty continues to be a serious problem in the United States

and the 7th Congressional District. While the Child Tax Credit has relieved many families from the monthly ills of poverty, the grants totaling $131,148,197 received by social services agencies will continue to help families.” Organizations such as Proviso Leyden Council for Community Actions, Inc., YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, Henry Booth House, Easter Seals, Heartland Alliance, Loretto Hospital, and others received these grants. A significant area of concern includes mental health and substance abuse, and healthcare in the 7th Con-

gressional district. As a result, Over $5 million was awarded for mental health services in the 7th Congressional district within the last few months. Over $128 million was allocated for community health centers and health services and was received by Rush University Medical Center, Northwestern University, Lurie Children’s Hospital, Loyola University, City of Chicago Department of Health, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Lawndale Christian Health Center, PCC Community Wellness, Near North Clinic, and other entities.

While prostitution has not been prosecuted as a felony in Illinois since 2013, those with such convictions are still subject to all the penalties that come with a felony record. Included in the law is another provision that also allows defendants whose convictions may cause consequences under federal immigration law to file for a post-conviction hearing. “Our justice system must operate on the premise that a defendant is well-informed of their rights and the consequences of their choices. There have been numerous cases in which those who plead guilty are unaware of how it may affect their immigration status, and are not well-informed by their defenders,” Collins said. “This is a step toward rectifying that.”

Senator Hunter’s bill will increase regulation in prescription monitoring program State Senator Mattie Hunter (D-Chicago), led a proposal to increase regulations for the prescription monitoring program is now law. “Primary doctors must be aware of any prescriptions being prescribed or filled for their patients in addition to what they prescribe to ensure any unnecessary prescriptions can be eliminated,” Hunter said. “Opioid overdose rates have risen in Illinois over the last year, and I want to take all necessary precautions so that patients are not over-prescribed but get the help that they need.” Senate Bill 1842 allows the Prescription Monitoring Program to send automatic reports to prescribers and dispensers when medication shopping is detected from five identifications of a prescriber or pharmacy in a six month period. The Illinois Controlled Substances Act currently allows the PMP to issue an unsolicited report to the prescriber, dispenser, or designee informing them of potential medication shopping when a person is identified as having three or more prescribers, pharmacies, or both that do not utilize a common electronic file. This law will allow an unsolicited report to be sent, and changes the limit on how many prescribers or pharmacies a person can have from three to five. It also aligns Illinois law with the current federal Department of Centers for Disease Control guidelines. “Doctors need to know what other medications their patients may be taking so none of the medications incite a deadly interaction,” Hunter said. “The right treatment is necessary for helping someone overcome addiction, and saving their life.” Senate Bill 1842 is effective immediately.

Baby Dove Creates Black Birth Equity Fund Baby Dove Announces the Creation of the Black Birth Equity Fund, Sets Out to Close the Black Maternal Care Gap ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. PRNewswire -- Today, Baby Dove announces the creation of the Black Birth Equity Fund to provide Black expecting mothers with immediate financial access to doula services. The new fund is part of Baby Dove’s long-term

commitments to advance superior care, with and for, Black moms in partnership with leading advocacy groups like Black Mamas Matter Alliance (BMMA). Black expectant mothers face significant disparities in care before, during and after childbirth.

This gap in care has created a world where Black women are dying at 3-5x the rate of white women – and 60% of those pregnancy-related deaths are preventable.1 As a brand born to provide superior care to new families, Baby Dove is committed to accelerating efforts

to close the gap in care and health outcomes for Black mothers and their babies. “At Baby Dove, we believe Black moms have the right to superior care at every step of their journey. But for too long, Black moms have not received the care they deserve, and the consequences are significant -- we are committed to helping change that. Expanding access to doulas through the Black Birth Equity Fund is just the beginning and in partnership with organizations like Black Mamas Matter Alliance, we will work towards systemic change that will improve the birthing journey for Black moms and their babies,” explains Sally Brown, Global Brand Director, Baby Dove. Beginning today through the end of the year, Black birthing people - Black individuals who will be giving birth2 - can visit BabyDove. com/BlackMaternalHealth to apply for direct, one-time grants up to $1,300 through the Black Birth Equity Fund to help cover the cost of doula services. Doulas are on the frontlines with expecting moms and can help advocate for better care throughout pregnancy, at the birthing moment, and into the Fourth Trimester. Research shows that with the support of a doula, moms are two times less likely to experience birth complications, four times less likely to have a lowbirth-weight baby and are more likely to experience overall positive health outcomes during the birthing journey. “We are proud to see the Black Birth Equity Fund become available today to Black expectant moms and birthing individuals across the country,” notes Angela D. Aina, Co-Founding Executive Director at Black Mamas Matter Alliance and Baby Dove Strategic Advisor. “For Black and other traditionally marginalized communities, Doulas

have been proven to help reduce health disparities, as well as bridge language and cultural gaps between families and health providers. With notable support from global brands like Baby Dove, we will be able to raise greater awareness of Black maternal health, promote advocacy, and shift culture to support reproductive justice.” In addition to advancing care for Black moms, Baby Dove is on a mission to advance care for babies with melanin-rich skin and curly hair. In speaking with parents, Baby Dove recognized that products formulated to deliver the needs of moisture and nourishment for melanin-rich baby skin and curly hair are often unavailable within the baby aisles of mass retailers. In collaboration with Walmart, Baby Dove is proud to introduce the new Baby Dove Melanin-Rich Skin and Curl Nourishment Collection – a full range of skin and hair products specifically developed for babies with melanin-rich skin and coils, curls, and waves. The new Baby Dove collection will be available nationwide exclusively at Walmart and on walmart.com beginning this month. Alongside the new product range, Baby Dove collaborated with illustrator Keturah Ariel Nailah Bobo on a limited-edition gift set also available exclusively at Walmart and walmart.com, and 100% of profits will go to the Black Birth Equity Fund. Emergency Physicians: Do Not Take Ivermectin for COVID-19 WASHINGTON PRNewswire -- Emergency departments and poison control centers are seeing a spike in patients who are suffering from the consequences of using unproven “treatments” for COVID-19, such as ivermectin—a medication often used for treating parasites in livestock. The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) joins the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in warning people that taking any medication or treatment for COVID-19 that is not approved or authorized by the FDA can be harmful or deadly. Emergency physicians urge caution around unsourced information, bold claims, or instant cures made on social media or circulating among friends. Instead, seek information supported by data and backed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or other leading medical organizations. Based on the scientific data, the best way to protect yourself from the virus and prevent the spread is to get vaccinated and continue to practice safety measures

Coalition Calls For Global Pandemic Summit WASHINGTON, PRNewswire -- A coalition of 80 global leaders and over 25 organizations across corporate, philanthropic, civil society, advocacy, academic, and health sectors today called on world leaders attending the United Nations General Assembly this month to convene a global summit to ignite an urgent global action plan to end the pandemic. In a statement being sent to President Joe Biden, United Nations Secretary General António Guterres, and G20 leaders, the coalition called on world leaders to convene a global summit during this year’s United Nations General Assembly and commit to actions to make 7 billion doses of high-quality vaccines available before the end of 2021, and an additional 7 billion doses by mid-2022; ensure that every country is ready to implement equitable vaccination programs at scale by the end of this year; and to vaccinate 70 percent of the world’s population

by mid-2022. People everywhere should also have equitable access to tests, therapies, and other proven interventions so lives can be saved using all COVID-19 tools. The coalition includes former senior government officials, former heads of major multilateral organizations, public health experts, heads of major foundations, and other leaders in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, and Africa. “We need a comprehensive response to the current crisis, which will also strengthen health systems and preparedness for the next pandemic. We are in a race against time. Without immediate action, there will be millions more infections and deaths, and new variants could emerge and pierce vaccine immunity,” the statement said. back-to-school eats: 5 brain-boosting foods for kids (BPT) - As summer draws to an end, many families are gearing up for an exciting new school year. And while picking out new pencils and notebooks is a fun way to prepare, it's even more important to make sure your child is mentally ready to return to the classroom - whether that be virtually or in person.

"To help them stay focused and learn more efficiently, fuel your kids with foods that are scientifically proven to boost focus and improve brain performance," says Marissa Meshulam, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and founder of MPM Nutrition. Instead of stocking up on sugary cereals and processed meals, Meshulam shares her go-to foods for feeding little minds: 1. Berries Strong evidence suggests that blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and other berries have beneficial effects on the brain. Their high levels of antioxidants help protect and boost memory functioning. Try sending the kids off to school with a berry smoothie or pack a fruit cup with berries for lunch to help keep their minds sharp throughout the day. 2. Eggs A versatile and easy option for any healthy, filling meal, eggs contain a variety of nutrients such as choline and lutein that are essential for brain health. To ensure your family is getting the most out of their favorite egg-centric snack or recipe, choose Eggland's Best eggs. Compared to ordinary eggs, EB eggs contain more than double the Vitamin B12 and Omega-3s, which help regulate sugar levels in the brain and can improve memory function. 3. Nuts Most nuts have brain-boosting benefits, but walnuts are especially high in Omega-3s, Vitamin E, antioxidants and folate content. Nuts make a great snack and also pair well with fruit or as part of a granola. 4. Avocado Avocados have nutrients that protect the nerve cells in the brain that carry information. Try spreading avocado on a sandwich for lunch or mashing up with some garlic, salt, chopped tomatoes and lemon juice for a quick dip with chips or veggies for an after-school snack. 5. Leafy greens Leafy-green vegetables are rich in so many vitamins, including Vitamin K, lutein and beta-carotene, which all contribute to healthy brain functioning. If you have trouble getting your kids to eat fruits and veggies, try sneaking them into smoothies or blended soups. Looking for recipe inspiration? Try this nutrient-filled breakfast that will help fuel your kids for a successful day of learning at school.

3 tips to beef up your tailgate game

(BPT) - With football season excitement mounting, people are already planning what to make for their next tailgating event. While cooped up at home last year, you may have had time to beef up your current tailgate recipes or try out something new. Now that you can reunite with friends and family before the big game, it's time to put your best tailgate spread out on the 50-yard line. Like any star player, your tailgate platter isn't born a champion; it's made a champion. While it doesn't take much to score a touchdown with your pre-game food, with these tips from the experts at Beef. It's What's For Dinner. and the Beef Checkoff, you can take your all-star dish to the playoffs if: 1) It's easy to eat When it comes to tailgate recipes, finger foods will play a role in your winning strategy. So whatever you decide to bring, make sure it's mini and edible using your hands. From potluck-style roast beef sandwiches to beef pinwheels and beer-infused cheese spread sliders, it's easy to take your tailgate game to the next level. Plus, with minimal prep, recipes like these make sure you have time to step away from the kitchen and join in on the tailgating fun. 2) There's enough for everyone Stadium parking lots can open as early as 6 a.m., so between the time everyone gets there and kick-off, there's no doubt your crew will be hungry. When creating your game-winning tailgate cuisine, make enough of it so you don't run out. Get a proper headcount of everyone who plans to be there and make sure each person can have at least a few servings. If you end up with leftovers, give them to your fellow game day patrons or save them for lunch.

Panzanella:

3) It goes well with bourbon beef cheese dip Nothing makes for a winning tailgate quite like beef, bourbon and cheese - and why not put them together? "Not only is this dip delicious, but it's also easy, says Chef Alex Reitz, manager of culinary for the Beef. It's What's For Dinner. brand. "With simple ingredients like deli Roast Beef and cream cheese, this dip comes together quickly and packs in 8 grams of protein to keep your crowd happy and full of energy to cheer on the team!"

1/2 cup sliced strawberries

Beef is more than what's for dinner, it's the flavor of game day. If you're looking to add this dip to your roster, this recipe can get you started:

EDUCATION

Welcoming Our Students (BPT) - The classroom environment changed tremendously throughout the pandemic, with many children studying at home full- or part-time. This meant additional gear for many, such as tablets and workbooks, while some items like backpacks went unused while studying remotely. As millions of students head back to the classroom for the start of the 2021/22 school year, backpacks will be a necessity again, and experts have some advice to ensure a safer start to the school year. "With a focus on getting back in the classroom and returning to 'normal,' it's easy to overlook possible injuries caused by everyday school supplies," said American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons spokesperson Emily Dodwell, MD, MPH, FAAOS, a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. "Backpacks might not seem that high on the list of safety hazards for children, but if too heavy or worn improperly, they can cause pain or injury to muscles and joints. Some potential problems could include wearing the backpack on only one shoulder, or a small child carrying heavy objects like a textbook, tablet or computer." As part of its "Prevent Injuries America™" campaign, the AAOS is spreading the word that backpacks that are too heavy or are worn incorrectly can cause numerous problems. Improperly used backpacks may injure or overuse muscles and joints. This can lead to back, neck and shoulder pain, as well as posture problems. This is especially concerning for students in hybrid learning environments because they may need to carry more items back and forth to school and home throughout the week. Tips for selecting and using school backpacks Shopping for a backpack is a fun part of preparing to go back to school, but many kids will prioritize fashion over function. Caregivers can help guide children to choose a backpack they like that also benefits their well-being. AAOS recommends backpacks that are lightweight with a waist or chest strap and two shoulder straps that are wide and padded. Rolling backpacks are a good option as well. If your child resists using a traditional two-strap backpack, a well-structured crossbody bag may be a reasonable compromise. After you have a well-designed, high-quality backpack, the next

Back to learning: Tips to avoid a heavy load In addition to helping your student select a good backpack, continue to watch how they use it throughout the school year. If it's a struggle to put on and take off, you may need to step in. "If a child complains that his or her bag is too heavy or is hurting his or her back, it is a good idea to lighten the load or consider a wheeled backpack," said Dodwell. Whether your child returns to school full time or is on a hybrid schedule, remind them not to carry more than they need at one

time. If 5. Lift properly by bending at the knees when picking up a backpack.

step is to use it correctly. To prevent injury when using a backpack, encourage kids to: 1. Always use both shoulder straps when carrying the backpack. The correct use of both of the wide, wellpadded shoulder straps will help distribute the weight of the backpack across the back. 2. Ensure the straps are snug to keep the load closer to the back. Backpacks should not be too low and bouncing around while walking. 3. Organize the items inside so that heavier items are low and toward the center of the backpack. 4. Pack light, removing items if the backpack is too heavy. Carry only those items that are required for the day and, if possible, leave unnecessary books at home or school.

What if your child experiences pain? your student has a locker, encourage them to visit it when time permits throughout the day to swap supplies. In addition to back pain, watch out for numbness, tingling or discomfort in the arms or legs, symptoms which may also indicate poor backpack fit or too much weight being carried. Don't ignore any back pain in a child or teenager and reach out to your physician for evaluation. To learn more, visit www.OrthoInfo.org.

Creative Ways to Connect Kids to Science and Encourage STEM Learning (StatePoint) 3M Sponsored Content. The pandemic has deeply impacted learning experiences for students across America. As educators and students return to school this year, they will continue to navigate these challenges as they look for ways to redefine learning. The pandemic also put a stark spotlight on inequities in the sciences and science education, especially the lack of equal access. The good thing is that this has sparked an increased awareness and a desire for change to begin addressing these issues.

2. Connect Personal Passions to STEM Learning. When students lack confidence in a particular subject, it can feel intimidating. As a result, they can often have a hard time seeing themselves as successful in that subject or can lose interest altogether. As teachers and educators, we want to encourage our kids and show them they can be anything they want. One of the ways to do this is by connecting what they already love to something they are not as confident in. STEM is a perfect example of this. Show students how science can be applied to their other interests, including sports, music, dance, gaming, art, or anything else they may be passionate about. By helping connect the dots for students, they can turn their passions into something that can benefit the world around them.

With new norms of educational learning still being defined, we have a real opportunity to find creative and engaging ways to expose young and diverse thinkers to the vast world of science around them. One of the ways to do this is by connecting science to the things kids are already passionate about – sports, music, dance, art, gaming, or anything else they may be interested in.

3. Keep A Pulse on New Educational Resources. Stay updated on new resources and information that could positively impact your students. The great thing about this is that teachers and parents can both get involved. A few ways you can stay up to date are reading blogs, educational articles, and looking for resources on social media. One learning resource to check out is 3M’s Science at Home video series. This online library of DIY science experiments uses common household items to help make STEM learning fun and accessible while showing kids they can connect science to just about anything. Teachers will also note that the step-by-step resources include national science teaching standards for easy lesson planning.

America’s favorite rapping teacher, Dwayne Reed, shares creative ways educators and parents can help kids find a “way-in” to science that will ignite their passion for STEM learning and make science more approachable: 1. Extend STEM Beyond the Classroom. Show kids how to apply the scientific method in their day-to-day lives and activities. As individuals, we make observations daily and ask questions – or hypothesize – based on what we observe. Parents and educators can foster an inquisitive mindset by challenging kids to explore the world around them. This creates fun and relatable learning experiences inside and outside the classroom.

4. Challenge Kids to Try Something New. Challenge kids to put themselves into roles they may not naturally see themselves in. Provide encouragement, resources, and confidence to get them to the next level. With a bit of creativity, you can open their eyes to a whole world of opportunities they may not be thinking about. Make STEM learning feel relatable and fun – even if it’s new for them. It’s all about reframing the way students look at the world and giving them assurance and an opportunity to explore what’s around them. The importance of maintaining a stable and engaging learning experience for students remains a priority. And with just a few creative learning techniques and models, educators and parents can ensure their students are connected, actively learning, and feeling encouraged both in and out of the classroom. www.citizennewspapergroup.com
