Donnita Hathaway is the Founder of the Donny Hathaway Legacy Project. Her father’s legacy is something that she cares about a lot. Listening to music from other artists, she could see where Donny Hathaway’s music influenced theirs. Amy Winehouse was one of those artists. Winehouse covered Donnie Hathaway’s music and even referenced him in her song, “Rehab.”

ATTORNEY GENERAL RAOUL CALLS ON CONGRESS TO REQUIRE SURGEON GENERAL WARNING ON SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS
Chicago – Attorney General Kwame Raoul, as part of a bipartisan coalition of 42 attorneys general, is calling on lawmakers to pass legislation requiring a U.S. surgeon general warning on all algorithm-driven social media platforms. Raoul and the coalition issued a letter to Congress amid growing scrutiny of social media companies for their role in generational harm to young people’s mental health.
In the letter, Raoul and the coalition highlight growing bodies of research that link young people’s use of social media platforms to psychological harm, including depression, anxiety and even suicidal thoughts in children and teens. The attorneys general also note how platforms feature irresistible algorithm recommendations, infinite scrolling and a constant stream of notifications that are designed to keep kids relentlessly engaged on the platforms, even at the expense of taking breaks, engaging in other activities or sleeping.
This is Raoul’s latest action to hold social media platforms accountable for the harm they have caused young people. In 2023, Raoul joined a lawsuit against Meta Platforms Inc. (Meta), the company that owns and operates Facebook and Instagram, for its harmful business practices targeting children. Earlier this year, Raoul led a bipartisan coalition calling on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to update and strengthen the rules technology companies must follow under the federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
Despite these efforts to address the harms caused by social media platforms, Raoul and the attorneys general say the need for federal action is clear. The coalition said in the letter that more action is necessary because, “social media platforms have demonstrated an unwillingness to fix the problem on their own.”
Joining Raoul in submitting the letter are attorneys general of Alabama, American Samoa, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
‘When Amy Met Donny’ Features The Music Of Two Musical Geniuses
Continued from page 1
BY TIA CAROL JONES
Donnita Hathaway met Sally Blandon during a Donny Hathaway Tribute concert. Blandon, a musician, vocalist, educator and a mental health advocate, talked to Hathaway about working on a project that focused on mental health. Blandon had been doing an Amy Winehouse Tribute called Tears Dry On Their Own and came up with the concept of a concert that would explore what would happen if Amy Winehouse met Donny Hathaway and ‘When Amy met Donny” was born.
This is the second year “When Amy met Donny” took place at the Epiphany Center for the Arts. Donnita Hathaway called it a prayer realized. In the concert Blandon portrays Amy Winehouse and Lester Jay portrays Donny Hathaway. Blandon and Jay met in college at Columbia College Chicago. Blandon wanted to use the music of Amy Winehouse as a way to break the stigma of mental health and change the narrative around who she was and what her musical contributions were. Blandon described Winehouse as a generous musician and lyricist who was unapologetic, sincere and forthcoming about her feelings. She wanted to share stories of Winehouse that weren’t focused on her bad days. Blandon also wanted Winehouse fans to hear the music of Donny Hathaway if they weren’t familiar.
and unfortunately, it wasn’t her only experience. Donnita Hathaway founded The Donny Hathaway Legacy Project because she wanted to uplift her father’s legacy and wanted to give him the flowers he deserved. She also was continuing to see young people die by suicide. It was her hope that with her work she could help save other people. She is glad that mental health has become a hot topic and while more people are addressing mental health, Donnita believes society has a long way to go.
The Donny Hathaway Legacy Project uses the arts, music, therapy, nutrition and other tools that are readily available, while also offering culturally relevant resources while uplifting her father’s story.
Blandon hoped that the concert would be a healing and therapeutic experience for people. She wanted them to feel like they could have time and space to relate.
“I want them to understand that you are not defined by your mistakes, you are not defined by your illnesses, you’re not defined by maybe the shadows that might lurk in your life or in your spirits. Our struggles do not define us, and we all deserve a little grace,” Blandon said.
Blandon first experienced losing a friend to suicide when she was 15. It really changed her to her core and made her realize how ugly people can be when they don’t understand something like suicide. That experience was painful
Chicago
“I want everybody to be well and have the best quality of life possible. I think we can do that if, we on a daily basis can have a better understanding and address our own mental health. If we are able to do that, then we can see when someone else is suffering and hopefully be able to provide them with the same grace, space and resources to save them,” Donnita said.
Donnita hopes that people see that the songs Donny Hathaway created live on. She said events like “When Amy met Donny” help with that. She said what is so special about the concert is it features the music of two artists who suffered from substance abuse and shows that people need to change the way they look at people who suffer from substance abuse. So, they can get the help they need, without sensationalizing their disease. She wants people to check in with their family and friends and themselves and see how they are doing.
September is Suicide Awareness Month and Donnita said that while that is a heavy subject, the concert, the music and the arts have a way to not make it as heavy. On 53rd and Kimbark there is a mural, created by Richard Wilson, of Donny Hathaway with the lyrics to “One Day We’ll All Be Free,” and there is a QR Code that goes to a website with Chicago-based resources for mental health.

Public Schools Celebrates Safe Passage Program
CHICAGO – Mayor Brandon Johnson and Chicago Public Schools (CPS) CEO Pedro Martinez joined staff, and community members to celebrate the nearly 1,200 Safe Passage workers that support Chicago’s youth. The Safe Passage Program aims to improve student safety during daily walks to and from school and increase engagement through partnerships with community-based organizations. This year, 191 schools will be connected to Safe Passage routes.
“Ensuring the safety and success of young people in every neighborhood requires contributions at every level, and both inside and outside of school walls,” said Mayor Brandon Johnson. “Because our Safe Passage workers are parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, and residents of the communities they serve, they take special care to watch over our students and to make sure they know they are valued and loved. I am so grateful for the Safe Passage workers for their commitment and care every day for our students.”
Held at the UIC Forum, the Safe Passage Rally also honored 17 Safe Passage workers who were identified as going above and beyond in supporting their school communities. CPS launched the Safe Passage Program in 2009 with 35 schools.
“The Safe Passage program reflects the caring nature of our city, our community partners and Chicago Public Schools,” said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. “We want every child to feel safe inside and outside of school and that includes their walk to and from school. It’s not just about physical safety but also our collective hope that our students feel a sense of community and know in their core that we, as trusted adults, care about them and believe in them as they pursue and achieve their goals.”
Safe Passage workers are employed by community-based organizations that operate in the school communities that they serve. The CPS Office of Safety and Security provides training to each Safe Passage worker to ensure they are equipped with relationship-building skills, de-escalation strategies and safety protocols to support students during their daily commutes. CPS’ Office of Safety and Security works with school communities and organizations to incorporate feedback on an ongoing basis to ensure that routes are the most effective for our students.
Glenda Rivera became a Safe Passage Worker in 2018 and continues to work in the Hermosa Park neighborhood because she

8th Annual Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards Celebrates Young Writers Across Illinois
CHICAGO – Illinois Humanities, in partnership with Brooks Permissions, the Poetry Foundation, and the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, is proud to announce the winners of the 2024 Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards, an annual competition for Illinois poets in grades K–12. The 26 winners and 12 honorable mentions were chosen from a record 988 submissions representing over 150 schools from across the state — the most competitive awards to date. Two of this year’s recognized student poets are past winners, exemplifying the Awards’ opportunity to introduce young writers as well as witness their growth and enduring love for poetry through their education.
Gwendolyn Brooks began the Youth Poetry Awards in 1969 during her tenure as Illinois Poet Laureate and continued to administer the awards until her passing in 2000. The awards were born out of Ms. Brooks’s belief that a poet laureate “should do more than wear a crown — [she] should be of service to the young.”
Illinois Humanities revived the youth
poetry competition in 2017 to honor her tremendous legacy and to celebrate and amplify the words and experiences of young writers from across Illinois. In the years since the reignition of the awards, over 4,400 poems have been submitted from youth poets all across the state.
“The Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards are a testament to the profound creativity and imagination of our state’s youth,” said Gabrielle Lyon, executive director of Illinois Humanities. “Year after year, we receive hundreds of submissions, each carrying a unique story that reflects the backgrounds, experiences, and personalities of our young writers. It is both an honor and a privilege to carry on Ms. Brooks’s legacy and amplify the voices of the next generation of Illinois poets.”
Illinois Humanities Program Manager of Teaching and Learning, Margy LaFreniere reports that common themes in this year’s Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards poems were places with special significance to the poets, interpersonal relationships, and nature, including the climate crisis.

Caring for Someone With Alzheimer’s And Recognizing And Managing Caregiver Stress
Being a caregiver for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia can be incredibly rewarding but also highly demanding. Many caregivers report feeling overwhelmed and stressed, which, if left unaddressed, can take a toll on both the caregiver and the person receiving care. Understanding the symptoms of caregiver stress and knowing how to manage them can help prevent burnout and ensure a better quality of life for everyone involved.
10 Common Symptoms of Caregiver Stress
Caregiver stress can manifest in many ways. Here are some signs to look out for:
1. Denial: Refusing to accept the reality of the disease and its effects.
“I know Mom is going to get better.”
2. Anger or frustration: Directed at the person with Alzheimer’s because they can no longer do things they once could.
“He knows how to get dressed — he’s just being stubborn.”
3. Social withdrawal: Losing interest in activities and people that used to bring joy.
“Being a young person at this time in history can feel overwhelming. They have access to so much information, and not all of it is inspiring,” LaFreniere explained. “The poems this year had nuance that was often surprising for the poets’ ages.”
The Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards competition runs annually from November through May and is open to all Illinoisans in grades K–12. Winners of the 2024 Gwendolyn Brooks Youth Poetry Awards receive a monetary prize, publication in a chapbook, and the honor of participating in Brooks’s legacy.

knows she and her co-workers are making a difference. Rivera remembers she cried on her first day because it was so cold but has found that connecting with students and community members has made such challenges worthwhile.
“I love that students know they can come to me and I’m like a security blanket for them, they know they can come to me,” Rivera said. “Parents also feel comforted by the yellow jacket and they know we help protect their children. I like to make them feel that if anything is happening, they can come to me. It’s an important job that helps the community.”
Mayor Johnson, CEO Martinez and team, including CPS Chief Safety and Security Officer Jadine Chou honored
17 exemplary Safe Passage workers during Wednesday’s event. Chief Chou noted the dedication of workers who stand vigil every school day, through rain, snow, and heat. The program also reflects the District’s holistic approach to safety which means that students can connect, and identify with trusted adults, including community members.
“The Safe Passage Program is more than just a service or resource; it provides a very powerful and positive adult presence in school communities,” said Chief Chou. “These dedicated workers often identify and report situations before they ever become a safety concern, allowing us to support student safety and well-being in a proactive manner.”
If you notice any of these signs regularly, it’s important to take action. Stress can negatively affect your health and ability to provide care. Talk to your doctor if you’re feeling overwhelmed.

Mortgage rates are dropping: what it means for Chicago homeowners and homebuyers
SPONSORED BY JPMORGANCHASE
Homeownership is more than just a lofty American dream—it’s how many can build generational wealth. For the Black community, 90% of wealth gains come from homeownership, meaning that owning a home continues to be a crucial method for Black households to build and accumulate wealth.
And while the Chicago housing market has been competitive, home buyers who have been waiting on the sidelines for prices to become more affordable might see some relief soon. The Federal Reserve (the Fed), the U.S.’ central bank that dictates interest rates, continues to indicate that a potential rate cut is on the horizon. Not only can this impact affordability for prospective buyers, but it could be advantageous for current homeowners that are locked into higher interest rates.
But, what does this all mean? JPMorganChase answers some of your questions as it relates to prospective homebuyers and homeowners:
What role do interest rates play in buying a home?
Mortgages respond to market conditions, including the Fed’s monetary policy. As interest rates climb, so do the interest on new mortgages and mortgage payments. Conversely, if rates fall, so does the interest on mortgages. So, buying at a lower rate can save you money in mortgage payments.
Should I wait to buy a home once interest rates fall?
Timing the market perfectly is not only challenging, but near impossible to do. While we hope the Fed will cut rates this year, it’s never guaranteed. Lower interest rates can save you money, but they’re not the only factor affecting affordability. So, instead of focusing on perfectly timing the market, we recommend leaning into what you can control: being financially prepared to buy a home.
Outside of readying your finances for homeownership, you can look for options that can lower costs and promote savings such as low down payment mortgages, down payment assistance programs and grants. And don’t forget you always can buy a home now and refinance in the future
once rates drop.
How do I prepare myself to buy a home in this current environment?
We not only want consumers to attain homeownership but to sustain it. That’s why it’s important to understand what exactly you can afford before getting into the market. There are a variety of resources to help you prepare financially for buying a home to see how much you can afford in the areas you’re looking to buy, compare loan options and obtain a free credit score. You’ll also want to start compiling all of your necessary documents for pre-approval, such as W2s, bank statements, income documentation, etc.
What about the down payment? Do I need to have 20% of the home cost saved up?
Most first-time home buyers are singularly focused on saving for a down payment. However, long gone are the days of putting down 20% of the purchase price – low down payment loan options are available with some requiring as low as 3% down. Plus, there are a variety of incentives and grants that can lower your costs. For instance, Chase offers a homebuyer grant of up to $7,500, where eligible, to help with the interest rate, closing costs, and the down payment. These grants are offered in low- to moderate-income communities and neighborhoods that are designated by the U.S. Census as majority-Black, Hispanic and/or Latino.
offer that option for extra peace of mind.
I’m an existing homebuyer. How does a rate cut impact my situation?
It can be a good time to refinance when interest rates are going down, especially for those with rates above or at 7%. For current homeowners looking to refinance, we advise them to keep their end goal in mind as they consider whether refinancing makes sense for their personal situation. Work with your local advisor or using a Refinance Savings Calculator to understand when it makes sense for your specific situation to refinance. Why should I refinance when rates are lower?
When interest rates are lower, you may be able to refinance your loan for a shorter term without seeing much of a change in your monthly payment. Even if your payments are higher, you may see significant savings over the life of your loan by making fewer interest payments. For example, you may decide to refinance a 30-year loan into a 15-year loan. While it has higher monthly payments, you’ll pay the loan down faster and pay less in interest.
Should I only work with one lender for my mortgage?
Studies show that 45% of borrowers who shopped around for mortgages received lower offers. Make lenders compete for your business – many have varying fees and closing costs that can add up. Also, interest rates can fluctuate daily, so lock in your rate with your lender if they
Whether we’ll see a rate cut or not, there are many tools for first-time homebuyers and experienced owners to keep homeownership affordable and sustainable. 3,000+ Attend 124th National Black Business Conference as Liberian President Joseph Nyumah Boakai Delivers Keynote Address
ATLANTA, PRNewswire -- More than 3,000 attendees gathered at The National Business League’s 124th National Black Business Conference in Atlanta to hear a powerful keynote address by President Joseph Nyumah Boakai, the 26th President of the Republic of Liberia. This landmark event, co-hosted in partnership with the National Alliance for Black Business and its co-founders—the National Black Chamber of Commerce, The World Conference of Mayors, and their hundreds of Black-led member organizations— focused on enhancing economic partnerships and collaboration between Black American businesses and the African continent, with a particular emphasis on Liberia.
The National Business League
President Boakai’s participation in the conference is historically significant, drawing a direct line back to Booker T. Washington, founder of The National Business League, who played a crucial role in Liberia’s history. In
1907, facing the threat of annexation by European colonial forces, Liberia sought Washington’s diplomatic intervention. His successful efforts not only prevented foreign encroachment but also ensured Liberia’s survival and laid a foundation for Pan-Africanist relations. This connection underscores Washington’s enduring legacy in shaping African affairs, as detailed in the book “Booker T. Washington and Africa: The Making of a Pan Africanist” by Dr. Tyrene Wright, author and board member of The National Business League.
In his address, President Boakai emphasized the vast potential for economic collaboration between Liberia, the broader Pan-African community, and the U.S. private sector. He highlighted the need for stronger economic ties and expanded opportunities for Black businesses globally. The conference, presented by major sponsors such as Amazon, Comerica Bank, and Prosper Africa, attracted a diverse audience, including government officials, business leaders, and representatives from 32 Pan-African countries.
Announcing the 125th National Black Business Conference Quasquicentennial Celebration
Looking ahead, The National Business League is proud to announce the 125th National Black Business Conference Quasquicentennial Celebration, scheduled for August 2023, 2025, at the Hilton Atlanta Hotel in downtown Atlanta, GA. This historic milestone will be co-hosted by the National Alliance for Black Business, the National Black Chamber of Commerce, and The World Conference of Mayors. The event will bring together hundreds of Black-led organizations from across the nation to unite under a shared global Black business agenda, continuing the mission of fostering economic empowerment and growth among Black entrepreneurs throughout the Pan-African Diaspora.
Founded by Booker T. Washington, The National Business League held its first National Black Business Conference on August 23, 1900, in Boston, MA. Over the years, the conference has evolved into a global Pan-African event through partnerships with the National Alliance for Black Business, the National Black Chamber of Commerce, and The World Conference of Mayors. Together, these organizations are dedicated to advancing the success of Blackowned businesses in the United States and worldwide, making the National Black Business Conference one of the largest of its kind globally.

Inspired by Eastside Golf’s mission to inspire the culture, promote diversity and stay true to its authentic roots, the Everyone’s Game collection celebrates golf’s ability to inspire greatness. The collection aims to reach across the traditional golf landscape by positioning golf as a game for everyone to create a more welcoming and diverse sport. It features apparel, accessories and Nike footwear defined by Eastside Golf’s signature style, quality craftsmanship, functionality and versatility for pieces that fit on and off the course.
The Everyone’s Game collection marks key growth milestones from Eastside Golf, in a record growth year for the company, including:
The brand’s first footwear collaboration with Nike and release of a performance golf shoe;
Its first-ever experiential retail pop-up where visitors can see the brand-new collection and be among the first to pre-order the shoes;
family of brands. In 2021, Eastside Golf made history with the first collaboration on a Jordan Brand golf shoe and has released four collections with the Jordan Brand inclusive of footwear and apparel.
“Fashion, culture and community are at the heart of everything we do. We are out to change both the cultural conversation around golf and the perception of the sport to reinforce that this is a game where you can show up as your authentic self, no matter who you are or where you come from,” said Olajuwon Ajanaku, founder and creative director of Eastside Golf. “The Everyone’s Game collection reflects our belief that everyone should feel confident and welcome on the course. This is your game – remember that.”
The second-annual Eastside Golf Invitational, a golf event driving inclusivity and diversity within the game, and spotlighting golf programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU)
First Footwear Collaboration with Nike
A cornerstone of the Everyone’s Game collection is the release of two new Eastside Golf x Nike footwear models – the Nike Air Max 1 ‘86 OG’, a hybrid non-spiked golf shoe, and the spiked Nike Air Zoom Victory Tour 3, Eastside Golf’s first performance shoe. These limited-edition shoes will be available for purchase on October 4th via Eastside Golf’s app and later on Nike.com on October 7th.
“We are the brand that meets people where they are. Too often, initiatives within the golf industry simply invite people to the game – we’re here to do the opposite. We’re meeting people in the streets, walking alongside them to the course, and proving that this isn’t just talk. We’re leading by example with our pop-up in SoHo, culminating in events at the course,” said Earl Cooper, co-founder and CEO of Eastside Golf.
In a first for golf shoes from Nike, each model comes with a set of three double-sided removable Nike swooshes that can be popped on and off to customize the look of the all-white shoes. The six swoosh colors include maroon and white in a nod to Morehouse College, blue and white to nod to Spelman College, a mirrored swoosh to reflect how you see yourself in the game, a dimpled swoosh nodding to the dimples on a golf ball, a gold swoosh that represents the gold chain in Eastside Golf’s swingman logo, and a chenille swoosh reflecting Eastside Golf’s signature sweater designs. Each pair of shoes also comes with a pair of gold shoelaces embossed with “Everyone’s Game. Be Authentic.”
The collaboration with Nike marks a new era in Eastside Golf’s relationship with the Nike, Inc.
“No matter where you’re from, you can lace up a pair of Eastside Golf x Nike sneakers or wear something from our collection and feel empowered to be your authentic self – both on and off the course. That’s why the world’s biggest shoe company is working with us. We’re scaling, we’re making an impact, and we’re bringing true change to the game.”
Launched in 2019, Eastside Golf is actively transforming perceptions of the game through its apparel which has been embraced by golf professionals, celebrities, fashion influencers, and professional athletes including NBA stars Chris Paul and Jayson Tatum, NFL greats Patrick Mahomes and Victor Cruz, musician DJ Khaled and President Barack Obama. Its signature swingman logo, a young Black man dressed in a sweatshirt and jeans with a gold chain around his neck and a club in mid-backswing, is a depiction of Ajanaku, and is meant to convey that you can bring your authentic self to the game of golf, with full confidence.

Driehaus Foundation Preservation Awards are honoring rehabilitation and adaptive reuse projects in Alto Pass, Carterville, Chicago, Elgin, Rockford and Woodstock. The people behind these remarkable preservation projects will be honored at a public ceremony on Oct. 18, in Chicago. Details on the award winners and ceremony are below.

2024 AWARD RECIPIENTS
Havisham Bourbon, Brew & Spirits, Alto Pass Award for Adaptive Use
Nick and Jerri Schaefer brought their vision to life by restoring Alto Pass’ oldest commercial building to create a speakeasy-styled bourbon bar, private tasting room and overnight rentals. The husband-and-wife team fully restored the former flour mill built in the 1860s into a unique destination along the highly traveled Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in Southern Illinois.
Montgomery’s Place, Carterville Award for Rehabilitation
For her fourth major preservation project in her hometown, Carterville native Jennifer Spence imaginatively renovated the long-neglected Montgomery’s Place building to create a welcoming restaurant, event space, bar and coffee shop. Spence transformed what was once an eyesore in the Southern Illinois city’s downtown into a bustling local business and unique community gathering space that celebrates the building’s century-old original features and Carterville’s history.
Historic Lawson House, Chicago Award for Rehabilitation & Richard H. Driehaus Legacy Award
Holsten Real Estate Development Corporation and Holsten Human Capital Development, NFP, led a massive rehabilitation of the former Lawson House, a 24-story Art-Deco skyscraper in downtown Chicago originally built as a single-room occupancy facility for the YMCA. Today, the Lawson House provides more than 400 apartment units and social services for low-income residents, many of whom have previously experienced homelessness.
Ramova Theatre, Chicago Award for Adaptive Use
After sitting empty for nearly 40 years, the Ramova Theatre in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood has reopened following an extensive rehabilitation led by husband-and-wife team Tyler and Emily Nevius. The historic former movie theater, built in 1929, has been adaptively reused as a concert hall, craft brewery, taproom and grill to host live performances as well as educational programs for the community.
Salt Shed, Chicago Award for Adaptive Use
16 on Center, Blue Star Properties, R2 Companies and Sky Deck combined forces to lead the transforma-
tive reimagining of the former Morton Salt processing and distribution factory into a thriving music and events venue. The project brought back to life an iconic landmark along the Chicago River, sparking economic development, creating jobs and attracting people to a new part of the city long home to primarily industrial activity.
The Terminal, Chicago
Award for Adaptive Use
A sprawling former manufacturing campus in Chicago’s Humboldt Park is once again a hub of innovation thanks to a creative reuse of the historic buildings led by IBT Group. After sitting empty for decades, The Terminal has been reimagined into a state-of-the-art research facility providing office and lab space for Chicago’s scientists, researchers and technicians.
1212 Larkin, Elgin Award for Rehabilitation
The historic Larkin Center, built in 1912 and vacant since 2013, has been reactivated as the centerpiece of the affordable housing development, 1212 Larkin. The thoughtfully designed adaptive reuse project, led by Full Circle Communities, created 48 quality housing units that resemble Elgin’s characteristic historic architecture.
Midtown FAUST Company, Rockford Award for Rehabilitation
Brad and Sue Roos bought and renovated Rockford’s Midtown FAUST Building to bring economic development and energy to their historic neighborhood, which has long experienced disinvestment and low commercial occupancy. The couple led the complete rehabilitation of the 3,500-square-foot building constructed in 1920, focusing on quality craftsmanship and sustainability. Today, it houses a pottery studio, office space for

CHICAGO – Hilton Contemporary today announced a specially curated exhibition of new and archival images drawn from the works of world-renowned photographer Paul Nicklen. The exhibition, titled “Reverence,” calls on viewers to cherish our planet with the respect and sacredness it deserves. Nicklen’s close, intimate portraits of wildlife bring viewers face-to-face with pumas, wolves, whales and more, revealing their roles as integral parts of an ancient order of life 4 billion years in the making. “Reverence” will be spread across Hilton Contemporary’s two galleries in River North (716 N. Wells St.) and Bridgeport at the Morgan Arts Complex (3622 S. Morgan St.). The exhibition is free and open to the public and will be on-view through Nov. 9, 2024.
“We’re honored to have the opportunity to display the works of a photographer whose devotion to and love of nature is unmatched,” said Arica Hilton, owner of Hilton Contemporary galleries. “Paul’s tireless efforts to help pass legislation to protect our oceans and the life that resides within and on our earth, is an important part of our mission to exhibit works that pulsate with vitality and leave viewers with a heightened appreciation and understanding of our natural world.”
Recently featured in the National Geographic series “Photographer” alongside Mittermeier, Paul Nicklen’s new works on display feature pumas that Nicklen shot in a recent trip to Patagonia, Chile, in addition to landscape photos of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil.
Raised in the remote Arctic, Nicklen developed a deep love for wildlife at a young age, nurtured by the rugged landscapes of his home on Baffin Island and the influence of his predominantly Inuit community. His childhood passion for nature led him to pursue a career as a marine biologist before transitioning to photography, eventually leading to a 20-year career at National Geographic Magazine where he documented both the beauty and the plight of our planet.
Known for enduring extreme expeditions across the world’s most isolated environments, Nicklen’s photography quickly garnered international acclaim as a voice for the voiceless and vulnerable wildlife. His evolution through the intersection of art, conservation and science spans from the shores of Antarctica to the depths of the South Pacific. Through his visceral imagery, Nicklen challenges viewers’ perceptions of nature and encourages a shared sense of kinship among all life.
Nicklen has garnered more than 30 of the highest accolades given to any photographer in his field, earning a global following of celebrities, conservationists and fans. He has published more than 20 stories for National Geographic and has been the recipient of the BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award and the prestigious World Press Photo award for photojournalism. In 2016, Nicklen played an instrumental role in passing a groundbreaking piece of conservation legislation that designated vast portions of the United States’ Arctic Ocean as indefinitely off limits for future oil and gas leasing.
Accompanying Nicklen’s work will be photographs by Cristina Goettsch Mittermeier, also an acclaimed nature photographer who has been globally recognized as one of the most influential wildlife writers and conservationists, having been named a National Geographic Woman of Impact in 2018. Mittermeier recently debuted her solo exhibition at Hilton Contemporary in July 2024 to an overwhelming reception by collectors from around the world. The exhibition, “HOPE: A PRELUDE,” is onview at Hilton Contemporary through October 2024.
Hilton Contemporary River North is open Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Bridgeport location is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Reverence” is free and open to the public to view. To learn more about “Reverence” or Hilton Contemporary, visit hiltoncontemporary.com.

“All Illinoisans deserve the opportunity to succeed,” said House Majority Leader Robyn Gabel (D-Evanston). “The JTED program has helped thousands of people across the state and this funding will only build on its vast impact, supporting the individuals who need it most.”
“The JTED program is essential to helping grow Illinois’ outstanding workforce,” said Senator Mike Halpin (D- Rock Island). “When we give folks the tools they need to succeed, it not only creates a path of success for them and their families, it helps improve our state’s economy.”
The State’s JTED model boosts access to education, training and support services needed for vulnerable residents to successfully re-enter the labor force. Additionally, JTED offers flexible funding through Barrier Reduction services for individuals that have emergency costs for basic needs.
Through the first round of the JTED program, the State of Illinois invested $20 million in 44 community-based organizations that are currently serving 2,466 unemployed, underemployed, or underrepresented Illinoisans, with a special training focus on industries hardest-hit by the pandemic.

HEALTHY LIVING
Embracing a Healthy Lifestyle Powered by Protein
StatePoint) Protein is an essential part of a healthy diet. It works to build and repair muscles, is needed to carry oxygen to different parts of your body to give you energy, supports your immune system, and helps you feel full for longer.
Here’s how to get enough of this impor-
tant macronutrient so you can embrace a healthy lifestyle.
• Mix it up: According to registered dietitian and culinary nutritionist, Laura Ali, eating protein from different sources helps ensure you get a variety of essential vitamins and minerals like iron, zinc,
potassium, calcium, selenium, B vitamins and healthy fats. Getting some variety in your diet also makes life much more interesting so that healthy habits are easier to follow. Choose from lean proteins like lean beef, chicken, pork and of course seafood. And don’t forget to include proteins like beans, nuts, seeds, eggs and dairy products.
• Time it right: When you eat protein also matters. A protein-filled snack shortly after a workout aids muscle repair and recovery, says Ali, who also advises including some protein with each meal. Spacing protein consumption throughout the day gives you the constant supply needed to repair tissue, build hormones and carry oxygen.
• Make it easy: When it comes to healthy habits, convenience can help keep you on track, so look for sources of protein that can be prepared quickly or taken onthe-go. Committed to supporting consumers’ health and well-being, StarKist makes it easier than ever to get your daily protein intake. Known for its tuna, StarKist is becoming a leading protein provider with a lineup of convenient, ready-to-eat products that also includes salmon, chicken, and most recently, beef. Each fully cooked, ready-to-eat protein product provides 8-17 grams of protein per serving and comes in a convenient, portable pouch—ideal for busy, on-the-go lifestyles. With over 30 flavors, including Buffalo Style, Thai Chili and Lemon Pepper, it’s easy to add high-quality, delicious protein to any meal, anywhere.
• Celebrate your wins: Helping fuel everyday goals, protein-rich diets and success go hand-in-hand, and celebrating your wins as they come can keep the momentum going. Whether your goals include running a marathon, getting your daily walk in, or simply spending quality time with family, one way to highlight your personal victories and the strength you derive from your life and work is through the new #FlexWithStarKist campaign.
