HARRY POTTER PLAY

Ebony Blake began her theatrical journey in the sixth grade. But, being raised in the church and doing Christmas pageants and Easter speeches prepared her to speak in front of audiences.

THRESHOLDS CENTER FOR MENTAL

WELLBEING - SOUTH HOLDS RIBBON

CUTTING FOR EXPANDED MENTAL HEALTH CARE SERVICES

Organization will bring more accessible mental health services to Chicago’s south side; will help remove barriers to necessary care

Chicago, Ill. -- Thresholds, one of the largest mental health and substance use treatment providers in Chicago, held an official ribbon cutting and open house at its Center for Mental Wellbeing - South (Center) to announce the expansion of the Center’s accessible, person-centered, evidence-based, individualized care for community members and celebrate the new building expansion. In 2023, the Center received a grant to become a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), allowing them to offer expanded mental health care services, and making them one of just 19 clinics with the same designation in Illinois.

“We’re thrilled to be able to open the doors on the Thresholds expansion on the South Side, and we’re so thankful to our incredible staff, our inspiring and resilient members and our partners and donors who help make this work possible,” said Thresholds President and CEO Mark Ishaug. “There’s a need throughout the city, but especially here on the South Side, for comprehensive and accessible care. Thresholds is dedicated to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their income, housing or insurance status is able to receive the support they need to live fulfilling lives.”

Through the CCBHC designation and funding, the Center will now offer the following expanded services:

Individual and group therapy

Psychiatry

Medication Management

Substance Use Treatment

Care Coordination and Case Management

Crisis Services and Intervention

Psychosocial Rehabilitation

Peer Support Services

Primary Care Integration

The CCBHC model prioritizes coordinated, comprehensive health care and ensures person-centered treatment. Participants in the program provide outpatient mental health, substance abuse disorder and primary care screening services for individuals regardless of age, residency or ability to pay.

Thresholds currently has three other CCBHCs open in Illinois, including locations in Kankakee, McHenry and in Ravenswood on Chicago’s North Side. These clinics ensure access to crisis care at all hours, coordination with hospitals, law enforcement and schools, plus access to high-quality services including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to help stop the overdose crisis.

CONGRESSMAN DANNY K. DAVIS

HIGHLIGHTS KEY ISSUES ON MILWAUKEE RADIO SHOW AS SURROGATE FOR VP KAMALA HARRIS AND GOVERNOR TIM WALZ Chicago, IL – Congressman Danny K. Davis (IL-07) appeared on Milwaukee’s WNOV 860 AM, serving as a surrogate for Vice President Kamala Harris and Governor Tim Walz. During his live interview on the “Community Voice” radio show hosted by Keith Parris, Congressman Davis emphasized the importance of the upcoming election. He highlighted the stark differences between the Harris-Walz campaign and Donald Trump’s Project 2025 agenda.

Davis focused on Vice President Harris’ vision for a “New Way Forward,” which centers on expanding opportunities for all Americans, particularly the middle class and working families. He also addressed the risks of unchecked power that Donald Trump’s Project 2025 would bring, calling out Trump’s dangerous policies that prioritize billionaires and corporations over working people.

Davis also spoke about the Harris-Walz campaign’s robust efforts to engage Black voters, particularly in Wisconsin. He noted that the Democratic campaign infrastructure in the state has never been stronger, with over 50 offices in key areas and more than 250 fulltime staffers on the ground working to reach voters in both red and blue counties.

Harry Potter Play Continues Story 19 Years Later

Continued from page 1

She loved to study and memorize her lines and liked seeing the excitement on people’s faces in the audience.

Blake went to school for theatre in Dayton, Ohio and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre. She has been working in theatre since she graduated. Now, Blake is portraying Hermione Grainger in the touring production “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” which is in Chicago at the James Nederlander Theatre until Feb. 1st.

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” picks up where 19 years after the Harry Potter book series ends, with Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione’s children getting on the Hogwarts Express to begin their wizard journey.

Blake said the role of Hermione was interesting to her because she identified with the character.

“On the surface, she projects this intense confidence, she’s extremely intelligent. It seems like she has a mastery of every sort of situation, immediately. Right beneath the surface, there’s this deep need to be loyal to her friends and she loves her friends and family to a fault and there’s a fear of failure, fear that’s she’s letting people down,” Blake said.

As Blake read and re-read the books since she has been involved with the play, the recurring theme of Hermione’s character is the fear of failure, which is why she is such an overachiever, who turns to books and the library to fix things and find solutions. Blake prepared for the role by reading the books and approached it as she would any other play, she read the sides and threw herself into the snapshot of the situation. She was really taken with it, because she could feel the world within that and knew who Her-

mione was.

In the books and movies, Hermione is depicted as a white girl. As a Black woman playing Hermione, Blake said it feels like an immense honor. It is so exciting for her to see boys and girls who look like her come up to her after the show.

“They are just enthralled with the fact that they’ve come to see this immensely magical thing, because that’s what it is, theater itself is magic. Afterward, their parents say, ‘they didn’t expect to see you and they were so excited.’ So, it feels like an honor, but it also feels like a fun challenge to me,” she said.

Blake said everyone who comes to the play, knows the backstory of the Harry Potter and have their ideas of who Hermione is. She loves that everyone takes the journey together through the duration of the play and meet and at the end, she hopes theatergoers realize Blake is Hermione, too. She said, “there’s the movie Hermione, there’s the Hermione that I thought of in the books, but now I’m leaving the theater and I totally believe her as Hermione.”

Blake hopes people take away from the play the importance and magic of the community of the theater and having a shared experience. She hopes people take away the continuation of the Harry Potter story and find a place in their hearts for “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” with the stories they’ve known for so many years. She said there are easter eggs that have been incorporated into the play and it is faithful to the stories from the books and movies.

Tickets for “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” range from $49-$193. For tickets, visit www.BroadwayInChicago.com. Groups of 10 or more can book tickets by calling 312-977-1710 or emailing GroupSales@BroadwayInChicago.com.

CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE CENTER ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF MISSING MIDDLE INFILL HOUSING DESIGN COMPETITION

CHICAGO — The Chicago Architecture Center (CAC) announced the winners of its Missing Middle Infill Housing Design Competition. The contest challenged architectural firms to reimagine designs for “missing middle density” home categories—that fall between detached, single-family housing and high-density large, multi-family apartment complexes—to meet modern needs. Fifty-six firms were invited to submit designs for the competition, and a single winner was chosen in each of four categories: sixflats, two- and three-flats, rowhouses, and single-family homes.

This announcement coincides with the City of Chicago’s Department of Planning and Development’s (DPD) launch of the Missing Middle Infill Housing Initiative, a $75 million program that will offer 44 vacant, city-owned lots in North Lawndale for redevelopment. These lots, available for $1 each, are part of the city’s efforts to repurpose abandoned land and create affordable, middle density housing in underinvested areas. Future phases will be announced for this initiative with the potential to spread similar investment to other Chicago neighborhoods.

CAC is also unveiling a complementary Design Catalog featuring 32 short-listed participants of the competition, along with statistics and maps that provide a meaningful look at the need for more missing middle housing in Chicago. The catalog will be made available as a free downloadable resource for the public, and the CAC will serve as a connector between interested parties, community funders and the participating architecture firms.

“The CAC applauds the City’s commitment to addressing the shortage of affordable, middle density housing in Chicago,” said Eleanor Gorski, AIA, President and CEO of the Chicago Architecture Center. “By centering design in conversations about what to do with vacant land, we can create contemporary homes that meet the needs of residents and fit into our existing city neighborhoods. We hope developers take advantage of these incredible new infill designs and work with the architects who participated in the competition.”

The Winning Designs

The four winning designs stood out for their originality, functionality, sustainability, and buildability within Chicago’s cityscape.

Six-flat: “The Courtyard Shift” by ParkFowler Plus Two- and three-flat: “Chicago Switch-Flat” by Dirk Denison Architecture

Rowhouse: “Readymade Row” by Future Firm

Single family: “r_home” by Vladimir Radutny Architects

“The selected designs showcase a broad spectrum of current thinking in ‘missing middle’ housing and offer a glimpse into what these buildings could look like in Chicago’s future,” said Reed Kroloff, Jury Chair of the competition and Dean and The Rowe Family College of Architecture Endowed Chair at Illinois Institute of Technology..”We focused on entries that are both innovative and attainable for our communities, reimagining the traditional middle density homes from over a century ago with modern layouts, enhanced outdoor spaces, and sustainable features.”

“We designed the Chicago Switch-Flat to honor the traditional Chicago brick multi-family home, while meeting modern needs,” said Justin DeGroff, Managing Director, Dirk Denison Architects. “Our goal was to design a flexible home that can evolve with a family’s changing needs—whether expanding or downsizing—without requiring construction, while also providing the opportunity for rental income to help families build long-term wealth.”

“Regardless of scale or type, our architecture office is dedicated to innovative design solutions for every project, enriching the lives of those who inhabit the spaces we create,” said Vladimir Radutny, AIA, Principal at Vladimir Radutny Architecture. “Participating in this competition within our home city allowed us to envision a design that addresses today’s needs while planning for the future. Our proposal not only supports the needs of a growing family and aging in place, but also presents a sustainable model for living and building in Chicago. We believe deeply in the r_home design and are thrilled to be one step closer to bringing it to life.”

“Our entry in the competition was driven by a deep optimism—one that believes Chicago can lead the way in high-quality housing that is accessible to everyone,” said Ann Lui, AIA, Partner at Future Firm. “Our rowhouse design reimagines an industrial structural building system as a way to quickly and affordably build new housing. As a plus, it also adds design features that improve day-to-day life, such as a double-height central space for natural light and family gatherings.”

“This competition allowed us to use our firm’s expertise in designing for the resident experience. We wanted our entry to

Chicago Public Schools Celebrates Next Steps to Bolster Academic Offerings at North Lawndale Schools

CHICAGO – Chicago Public Schools (CPS) officials celebrated the next milestone in a District-community collaborative project to provide high-quality science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) programming at three North Lawndale schools.

Newly approved TIF funding –greenlighted last week by Chicago City Council – paves the way for a slate of STEAM-related academic enhancements and building renovations for Chalmers STEAM Elementary School, James Weldon Johnson STEAM Elementary School, and The Collins Academy STEAM High School. The planned improvements will further the District’s goals to provide students with a well-balanced education that deepens their knowledge in STEAM subjects, starting in elementary school and continuing through high school – yielding more graduates prepared for in-demand STEAM careers.

“This exciting new programming means our students will have more opportunities than ever to benefit from a well-rounded education that allows

them to fully explore their academic and creative potential,” said CPS CEO Pedro Martinez. “When I walk through the doors of these schools, I see hopes and dreams of our young people coming to life. It is an incredible reminder of the great work we are doing as a District to serve Chicago’s children and I am grateful for our many families and community partners who helped get us here.”

CEO Martinez, District and local officials, including Alderperson Monique Scott, Alderperson Jason Ervin, Cook County Commissioner Michael Scott Jr., and Community Action Councils members convened Tuesday morning at The Collins Academy STEAM High School to celebrate the recent City Council-approved $10 million in TIF funding, in addition to a $30 million allocation in the CPS Fiscal Year 2025 capital budget for an anticipated $40 million total for renovations at all three schools.

of college credit, an associate degree or advanced technical certifications through partnerships with City Colleges of Chicago, industry partners, and four-year universities.

Living With Alzheimer’s You Are Not Alone

Receiving a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia can feel overwhelming, but you are not alone. Every year, millions of individuals face this diagnosis, and while it may seem daunting, there are people who understand what you’re going through and are ready to help. There are also steps you can take in the early stages to better cope with the changes ahead. By staying informed and taking care of your well-being, you can navigate this journey with greater resilience and support.

A nearly decade-long collaborative effort among community partners drove this programming forward. In 2015, North Lawndale Community Action Council (NLCAC)/North Lawndale Community Coordinating Council (NLCCC) Education Committee developed a Quality-of-Life Plan that included the creation of the STEAM partnership. The group has advocated for investments to support stronger educational opportunities since 2017 with efforts increasing among the member organizations of the NLCAC/NLCCC and the District under the leadership of CEO Martinez and CedO Chkoumbova, said Dr. Betty Green, co-chair of the NLCAC with Dr. Leonard Moore.

“It is exciting to see all this come together after so many years of community planning and collaboration,” said Dr. Betty Green. “I want to thank CEO Martinez and CEdO Chkoumbova for bringing our collective vision to fruition. We are now one step closer to making sure that children in North Lawndale have equitable access to high-quality STEAM learning.”

Renovations at the schools are slated to begin in the summer of 2025 and be completed by the end of 2026. The renovations call for designing or improving on maker spaces, art and computer rooms, and science labs. At Collins, re-organized space will allow for expanded learning in areas such as cosmetology, automotives, and robotics. STEAM-centered design will be woven throughout modernized common areas, including: living museums to display students’ creative artwork; hydroponic gardens to grow plants, vegetables, and herbs; and even a 1,000 gallon aquarium that houses a variety of sea life to inspire and deepen student interest in science and ecosystems. The updates to the three sites will go beyond STEAM-specific improvements to address critical facility needs such as accessibility upgrades and roof, HVAC, plumbing and electrical replacements.

CPS is investing in STEAM staffing and supports, including professional development, at each school and will continue to build out the curriculum, tapping the many extraordinary partners across the city from world class museums to top architectural firms, and more.

A STEAM curriculum promotes creative and critical thinking, cross-disciplinary problem-solving, and gives students the opportunity to investigate, analyze, solve problems and work in teams. To ensure students are prepared for post-graduation, they will also have opportunities to earn college credit or an associates degree in high school, mentorship and paid internships, industry-approved certifications, and scholarships.

Understanding your diagnosis is a critical first step in managing the changes ahead. Learning more about Alzheimer’s disease, the progression of symptoms, and the available resources can empower you and your loved ones to plan for the future. The Alzheimer’s Association provides valuable information on everything from medical facts to practical tips, ensuring that you and your family can make informed decisions about your care and lifestyle. It’s natural to feel a range of emotions—shock, fear, sadness, or even anger—after receiving an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. The emotional impact can be significant, but there are ways to manage it. Many individuals find it helpful to seek counseling, support groups, or talk with others who are facing similar challenges. The Alzheimer’s Association offers guidance to help you come to terms with your diagnosis and offers coping strategies to maintain emotional wellbeing.

Deciding when and how to share your diagnosis with others can be a deeply personal choice. Many people living with Alzheimer’s have found that openly discussing their diagnosis with family, friends, and colleagues can create a network of support. While it may be difficult, being transparent about your condition can help others understand what you’re going through and how they can assist. Those who have faced this journey suggest starting with those closest to you and gradually expanding the conversation when you’re ready.

An Alzheimer’s diagnosis can also bring shifts in your relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. Some people may not fully understand your condition or may struggle with how to interact with you. This can be challenging, but many find that open communication helps. Letting your loved ones know how they can support you—and being patient with their learning process—can strengthen your relationships during this time.

Since the beginning of School Year 2024-25, the three schools have already started incorporating a number of enrichment experiences into its curriculum under the leadership of Chalmers STEAM Elementary Principal Romian Crocket, Principal Steve Fisher of James Weldon Johnson STEAM Elementary School and Principal LaKenya Sanders-Sharpe of The Collins Academy High School.

For younger elementary-age students, this can look like time to explore music, arts and technology from a STEAM lens, or exposure to animals and plants to better understand ecosystems. For high school students, the early STEAM college and career-connected learning can include digital media & film, coding, engineering, mechanical and technical trades, and biological sciences with the goal of all students graduating with a semester

Chicago

These opportunities are available due to Collins’ conversion into an early college STEAM high school, becoming one of 13 such Early College STEM/STEAM High Schools. Another 37 elementary schools offer STEM and STEAM programming across the District. Career forecasts show that 80 percent of jobs created in the next decade will require some form of math and science skills.

The efforts to bolster STEAM programming reflect CPS’ new five-year strategic plan, Success 2029: Together We Rise, approved unanimously in September 2024 by the Chicago Board of Education. The plan builds off of current practices and strategies over the past three years, including a concerted effort to double down on core instruction and interventions to help struggling students. It emphasizes a vision for strengthening neighborhood schools and improving the daily learning experience for all students, especially those who have been historically furthest from opportunity.

Self-care is crucial when living with Alzheimer’s. This means tending to your physical, emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing. Staying active, engaging in hobbies, maintaining social connections, and continuing to participate in activities you enjoy can all contribute to a higher quality of life. The Alzheimer’s Association offers tips and tools to help you maintain a sense of purpose and joy while living with the disease.

Stress can take a toll on your health and quality of life, especially after an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Taking steps to reduce stress—such as practicing mindfulness, engaging in physical activity, or participating in support groups—can improve your overall well-being. Finding ways to relax and manage stress will be key to maintaining balance as you face the challenges ahead.

Daily life may become more complex as the disease progresses, but there are strategies that can help. Establishing routines, using memory aids, and adapting your living environment can help you manage day-to-day tasks more easily. These coping strategies will allow you to maintain a sense of independence and control over your life for as long as possible.

As your family and friends adjust to your diagnosis, they may need guidance on how to best support you. You can help them by being open about your needs and preferences. The Alzheimer’s Association offers resources specifically designed to help your loved ones understand the disease and how they can be there for you during this time.

Remember, you are not alone on this journey. Help and support are available, and by taking proactive steps, you can live your life to the fullest while managing Alzheimer’s.

As families navigate these conversations and decisions, proactive planning and open dialogue can help ensure a smoother transition and promote safety for everyone involved.

DSU first HBCU to launch private merchandise label

(Black PR Wire) DSU’s private label will provide an expanded opportunity to control the design, quality, and variety of products that students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the community wear and purchase. The brand inventory will include various types of limited-edition merchandise that will only be available directly from the University, and 5 percent of the sales will support student success by funding scholarships.

Everything Collegiate, owned and operated by Terance Harmon for over 20 years, holds more than 85 brand licenses for colleges, societies, and fraternities. As a primary vendor to over 60 colleges, including 39 HBCUs, it provides thousands of custom collegiate products including apparel, shoes, and giveaway items.

“This partnership marks a significant milestone in our journey,” said Harmon. “Our goal has always been to support and uplift HBCUs, and working with DSU has been a fulfilling step in that direction. I am excited to work with DSU on this historic move.”

DSU initially partnered with Everything Collegiate on a launch of merchandise last year at the time of the University’s branding update.

“Thanks to our team, the designs were met with an overwhelmingly positive response,” said Dr. Dawn Mosley, Senior Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications. “Our students, faculty, staff,

and alumni were thrilled with the new products and kept asking for more. The key difference was that we had control over the design process, working closely to ensure it resonated with our brand and audience. It made perfect sense, as we best know what our audience wants.”

The partnership will begin with a select choice of merchandise for which Everything Collegiate will manage the distribution while continuing to assist DSU in growing its private brand inventory in additional retail spaces and online. This will allow the University’s products to reach a wider audience

while maintaining high standards of quality and authenticity.

“We’re no longer restricted to buying premade or mass-produced products that follow a standard design with our logo incorporated within,” Dr. Mosley said. “That’s not true ownership. We must protect what has taken over a century to build.”

However, existing relationships with retailers will continue to be a valuable resource for students and the campus community to purchase everyday branded items.

“We are not competing with our campus stores or partners who sell merchandise with our brand. We value their contributions and the royalties they generate,” Dr. Mosley said. “It’s simply smart business to establish our own revenue stream from custom products. This also creates an exciting opportunity for our students and alumni to share their unique design ideas, which can further support scholarships for our students.”

The first round of student scholarships from initial product sales will be awarded in spring 2025. Moving forward, new-arrival merchandise will now feature the Hornets (tm) private-label branding. For early sales, click here or visit https://hbcudsu. com.

Berite Labelle spotted at the Ritz Paris

Surrounded by the biggest French influencers for the pre-launch of her perfume brand, Blone

PARIS, PRNewswire

-- International model and actress Berite Labelle made a quick stop in the capital for the pre-launch of her new brand Blone Haute Parfumerie.

On this occasion, an exceptional dinner was organized in a private room at the Ritz, transformed by a spectacular floral decoration, paying homage to the natural raw materials used in the creation of her fragrances.

With an eye for detail, Berite also had the bar manager of the Ritz, Romain de Courcy, create a cocktail with floral notes.

Fostering a spirit of friendliness, elegance, and celebration, the evening, animated by the duo Doppelgänger, allowed guests to engage with Berite Labelle about her new haute perfumery brand, as well as her activities as a model and international influencer.

Learn How Reverse Mortgages Can Affect Estate Planning

Reverse mortgages are one of the most misunderstood financial tools directed to the elderly. It is my intent to help dissuade the negative opinion that people hold towards reverse mortgages. Too often disdain is based on myths and hearsay, not fact.

Here is a fact, a reverse mortgage is a financial tool, but it is not the right tool for every financial situation. When considering a reverse mortgage

There should be a planned outcome.

Here are some outcomes of getting a reverse mortgage:

-to lower monthly expenses.

-receiving tax free income from home equity.

-it allows a person to age at home

The myths that prevail are as follow:

-the ownership of homes is immediately transferred to the government

-a reverse mortgage NEVER has to be re-paid.

Elders, prior to receiving a reverse mortgage, must attend a training class. The training is to explain how a reverse mortgage works. However, it has been my experience that, even with the training, too often elders do not fully understand the terms of their reverse mortgage and how it affects their families.

In future columns, I will share scenarios of elders with reverse mortgages and what impact this may have on their estate plans.

Bye for now,

Bren.

GIRLS INC. AND #HALFTHESTORY

Announce National Education Partnership to Support Girls’ Healthy Relationships with Technology

NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- Girls Inc. and #HalfTheStory today announced a groundbreaking digital wellness partnership for girls. This innovative collaboration between the two organizations offers a unique opportunity to address the pressing issue of digital wellness for young girls at scale, reaching underserved communities across America.

For 160 years, Girls Inc. has served millions of girls across the United States and Canada—particularly girls from low-income communities and girls of color. #HalfTheStory is a non-profit dedicated to improving the next generation’s relationship with technology. Through this new education program, Girls Inc. and #HalfTheStory will work to equip girls with the tools needed to thrive in the digital age, fostering healthier, more balanced relationships with technology.

Compared to girls from middle and higher-income households, teens from lower-income households (<$50,000 annual family income) are more likely to use all social media platforms, especially TikTok and Facebook. Girls from lower socioeconomic status households may also be exposed to even more harmful effects of social media. (Pew Research Center, 2023).

Additionally, after #HalfTheStory was included in an Oprah Daily “Life You Want” episode focused on the teen mental health crisis this past May, the Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation made a contribution to support this new initiative.

The new digital wellness initiative will serve young girls in underserved communities across America.

Funding for this program was supported by Pivotal, a Melinda French Gates organization, and follows Melinda French Gates’ $1 billion commitment to women and girls. The partnership also received backing from The Archewell Foundation, co-founded by Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex, which named #HalfTheStory to its Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund in 2023. This follows The Duchess’ visit to Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara, where she engaged with young women on the importance of empowerment and responsible technology.

#HalfTheStory launched its education platform, Social Media U, to scale its impact to schools across the US, UK, and Canada. This educational intervention program helps mitigate the harms of technology while educating teens on how their digital habits impact their digital wellness. #HalfTheStory’s strength-based program with Girls Inc. will equip girls in the digital age with the skills they need by addressing key issues such as body image, friendships, healthy digital habits, and safety from sexual predators. Programming will emphasize online safety education, responsible social media engagement, and mental health support, equipping girls with the tools to navigate their environment confidently and resiliently. At launch, this partnership will focus on pre-teens, targeting prevention efforts to mitigate the harms of social media at a critical age. The organizations have an expansive vision to extend their impact, reaching girls from elementary through high school with additional resources and funding.

“As a young girl who nearly lost my life to social media, it’s a dream come true to bring #HalfTheStory’s work to the masses through Girls Inc.,” said Larissa May, founder and CEO of #HalfTheStory. “As #HalfTheStory celebrates its 10th anniversary this month, this partnership marks a pivotal moment in our mission to reach one million youth by 2030 and improve the next generation’s relationship with technology. We can’t save the world through fear—only through solutions.”

“It is an honor to partner with #HalfTheStory to bring digital health programming to girls across the Girls Inc. Network,” said Dr. Stephanie J. Hull, President & CEO of Girls Inc. “We believe that when girls develop the skills to leverage the digital space in healthy, positive, and productive ways, the benefits are limitless. They are stronger and more adept leaders who build solid social and emotional connections.”

Girls Inc. is a network of local organizations that works with schools and in communities across the United States and Canada. Through direct service and advocacy, Girls Inc. equips girls – particularly girls from low-income communities and girls of color – with the knowledge and skills to effect positive changes in their lives and to become leaders who will change the world. Professionally trained staff and volunteers provide mentorship, safe spaces, and programming that address the unique challenges girls face and are proven to help girls succeed. Together with partners and supporters, Girls Inc. is building the new generation of leaders. Join us at girlsinc.org.

#HalfTheStory is a non-profit dedicated to improving the next generation’s relationship with technology. As the first youth-led non-profit of its kind, #HalfTheStory focuses on progressing education and advocacy work surrounding social media and tech use. Through its evidence-based education program, Social Media U, young people across schools in the US, UK, and Canada are taught the skills needed to have a healthy relationship with their screens and are empowered to understand and advocate for their digital health. Larissa May founded #HalfTheStory after facing her own struggles with social media and has spent the past 10 years driving a global movement towards digital wellness. #HalfTheStory’s funders include Pinterest, Pivotal, The Oprah Winfrey Charitable Foundation, The Archwell Foundation, and The Born This Way Foundation. In 2023, #HalfTheStory was selected by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex as one of the 26 organizations named to the first-ever Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund.

PHILANDER SMITH AND SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY

win 6th annual Moguls in the Making entrepreneurial pitch competition

DETROIT, PRNewswire -- Philander Smith University and Southern University students took top honors in the sixth annual Moguls in the Making entrepreneurial pitch competition, where 50 students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) developed innovative and impactful solutions to address economic mobility challenges in Detroit.

The competition, held October 2-6, was hosted by Ally Financial (NYSE: ALLY) in collaboration with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF), the largest organization exclusively representing the Black college community. This year’s event took place in Detroit at The Icon building, home to the state’s only HBCU, and the nation’s only design-focused HBCU, Pensole Lewis College.

The Jennifer Hudson Show had something special prepared for the students early in the week. Everyone is encouraged to tune in on October 25 to see the surprise.

“These Moguls stand out among their peers – they’re hungry for new experiences, to learn about potential career paths, and to make a big impact in the community,” said Reggie Willis, chief diversity officer at Ally. “They always bring insightful ideas and perspectives to showcase in their pitches, and it’s exciting to see their growth in just a few short days.”

Fifty students – 10 teams with five students each – toured Detroit, Ally’s headquarters, to learn about the city’s rich heritage and community challenges with stops at Orchestra Hall, Motown Museum and Detroit Pizza Bar. They were then assigned industries and asked to develop a concept to support economic mobility in Detroit, creating business plans to put those ideas into action.

(StatePoint) Foot ulcers develop in about 15% of the 25 million Americans living with diabetes and are a top cause of hospitalization. These ulcers can lead to serious complications, such as infection and amputation. According to foot and ankle surgeons, there are steps you can take to prevent complications and keep your feet healthy, as well as breakthrough treatments that are saving limbs, restoring mobility and improving lives.

“The majority of lower-extremity amputations are preceded by a reoccurring foot sore or an ulcer that won’t heal,” says John S. Steinberg, DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and a Fellow Member and Past President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).

“Patients do best when they take charge of their foot health with the help of a foot and ankle surgeon.”

The surgeon members of ACFAS are sharing some important insights into preventing foot ulcers associated with diabetes and treating them if they do occur.

Make these precautions part of your foot care routine:

• Inspect feet daily using a flashlight and mirror to see the bottoms of your feet.

• Moisturize dry, cracking feet to prevent sores. Use powder to control moisture that can result in blisters.

• To prevent injury, wear protective, well-fitting shoes and socks at all times, even in the house. Change socks daily and more often if your feet get wet or sweaty. Avoid socks with holes or seams. Sometimes diabetic shoes are prescribed to avoid pressure and rubbing on the feet.

• Get regular foot exams from a foot and ankle surgeon, which can reduce amputation risk by 45-85%. The surgeon can also screen feet for loss of protective sensation.

• Manage your diabetes. Out-of-control blood sugar levels can lead to nerve cell damage, making it harder to detect foot problems.

Look for telltale signs that an ulcer may be developing:

• Swelling. The foot or ankle may look puffy or engorged and larger than the other.

• Temperature. Cold feet might mean a circulatory issue, whereas hot feet might mean infection.

• Color changes. Redness and even other colors might appear before an ulcer forms.

• Calluses. If a callus changes colors or develops dark, “dried blood” colored spots, it may be time to have a foot and ankle surgeon offer a proper diagnosis.

Ask your foot and ankle surgeon about innovative treatments:

If you do experience a non-healing ulcer, talk to your foot and ankle surgeon right away

about innovative technologies that stimulate healing.

Groundbreaking approaches include stem cell therapy, the use of bioengineered skin substitutes to accelerate growth of healthy skin, and negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) to promote healing and enable healthy, new tissue to grow. Today, foot and ankle surgeons rarely do a skin graft without NPWT. Skin grafting for foot ulcers has also advanced. Surgeons now use advanced reconstructive surgery and grafting techniques to promote wound healing and decrease wound recurrence.

The success rate of these advanced therapies is high, providing substantial improvement over treatments of the not-too-distant past, when doctors would clean and bandage the wound and hope for the best.

“Thanks to the many advances in diabetic foot care, patients today are having simpler surgeries, avoiding amputations, and getting back to everyday life sooner than ever before,” says Dr. Steinberg.

For more information or to find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, visit FootHealthFacts.org, the patient education website of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.
