The Music Institute of Chicago presents its 22nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration Concert, a free performance on Sunday, January 19 at 3 p.m. at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue, Evanston. The performance also will be available via livestream.
For the first time, the Music Institute welcomes Evanston Interfaith Clergy and Leaders as a cosponsor of the event.
In the spirit of community with other music organizations and Evanston arts groups, Music Institute faculty and student musicians perform on a program that includes Dance Center Evanston; a newly commissioned work through the Hearing in Color Young Composer Residency; young artists from Chicago Musical Pathways Initiative and Ravinia’s Reach Teach Play program; and a visual art display coordinated by the Evanston Art Center. OF CHICAGO LAUNCHES SMART STREETS PILOT PROGRAM TO MODERNIZE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM USING CAMERA TECHNOLOGY
New pilot program uses camera technology to enforce illegal parking in bus and bike lanes downtown
CHICAGO— The City of Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Department of Finance (DOF) announced the launch of the Smart Streets Pilot program, an initiative using camera technology to enhance enforcement of parking and standing violations in bus and bike lanes. This pilot program aims to modernize the current system to protect vulnerable road users who are walking, biking and using transit while improving transit operations.
Starting November 4, the City began a 30-day warning period, during which registered vehicle owners will receive mailed warnings for infractions like parking in bike and bus lanes. Beginning on December 5, drivers will receive a warning notice for the first offense, with subsequent violations resulting in fines. In the near future, the program will also enforce violations of metered parking, ticketing vehicles that have not paid the parking meter.
Low-income drivers will continue to be eligible for vehicle-related debt relief through the Clear Path Relief Program.
The pilot will operate within the area from Lake Michigan to Ashland Avenue, and from North Avenue to Roosevelt Road. It will run for two years from the date the first citation is issued. Before the pilot concludes, CDOT and DOF will provide a summary report to City Council, evaluating the effectiveness of automated enforcement, fee collection technologies and operational practices in improving parking compliance and enhancing traffic safety across all modes of transportation.
The pilot will initially include eight City vehicles equipped with cameras to enforce parking violations. In 2025, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) will install equipment on up to six CTA buses on priority routes to further support the program’s goals of improving transit efficiency and safety. Currently, the CTA’s procurement process is underway.
The Smart Streets Pilot Program aims to protect our residents by addressing the danger of illegal parking and standing behavior for all road users, especially pedestrians and cyclists. Parking in bus-only lanes slows down buses, increases wait times for passengers, and disrupt traffic flow by forcing buses to merge in and out of traffic. By keeping bus lanes clear, we are enhancing the efficiency of Chicago’s growing bus priority network, reducing congestion and improving the experience for CTA riders, particularly those with disabilities who face challenges when buses cannot access the curb due to parked cars.

Equity and Transformation Chicago and Working Family Solidarity recently partnered on a series of Racial Unity Dialogues with the hope the discussions would build power and unity of the two groups.
Equity and Transformation Chicago was established in 2018 with the aim to uplift the voices and power of Black people in Chicago who engage in the informal economy -- economic activities, enterprises, jobs, and workers that are not regulated or protected by the state.
In 2023, Equity and Transformation Chicago launched the Chicago Future Fund, a pilot guaranteed income program for people who are impacted by the system and/or formerly incarcerated, primarily in West Garfield Park, Austin and Englewood that distributed $500 a month to those who were eligible.
Working Family Solidarity was founded with the mission to create economic stability for working families through outreach and labor rights education. The organization’s work includes building racial alliances among workers from different backgrounds.
Nicole Laport, Director of Communications for Equity and Transformation Chicago, said the organization noticed there was a narrative that migrant workers were coming and taking the jobs of the informal workers and wanted a way to have dialogues to bring unity to the groups and dispel the rumors that divide them. Migrant workers from Working Family Solidarity and informal workers from Equity and Transformation Chicago were invited to attend a series of six discussions, beginning in March and ending in October.
The topics discussed during the Racial Unity Dialogues ranged from housing, discrimination and how people with certain backgrounds are treated while looking for employment.
“The more people sat down and talked with each other and traded experiences, they actually found there was a lot in common with both sides,” Laport
said.
One of the things they discovered through the discussions was that migrant workers were being taken advantage of and being paid wages below a living wage. The conversations provided opportunities for people to get a different perspective and to see each other’s humanity. Laport said the goal was for people participating in the conversations to see the truth about the situation instead of the narratives that are meant to divide the communities.
It is Laport’s hope the Racial Unity Dialogues continue and are expanded to make them even bigger. She said she wants see the two communities – Black informal workers and migrant workers – build power and unity so they can work together and eliminate any preconceived notions they have about each other.
“They’re both faced with the same barriers, and they should build together because it’s a lot easier to deny people certain rights and privileges, employment and housing, if they’re divided. But, if we are together demanding the same things and we build momentum, we can change a lot of things in this city,” she said.
At the last session in October, there were about 100 people in attendance. Laport was encouraged to hear that people wanted to connect with each other and that they had a change in their point of view.

Chicago has one of the largest urban Native American populations in the United States, with over 65,000 Native Americans in the greater metro-
politan area and approximately 175 different tribes represented. Despite histories of displacement and erasure, Native Americans have always been vital contributors to Chicago’s art ecosystem.
Art Design Chicago’s partner exhibitions seek to showcase these contributions, offering diverse perspectives on Indigenous identity, tradition, and contemporary creative practices.
“Many artists want agency in the creation of their work, but we also want nuance in the interpretation of our works,” said artist Andrea Carlson (Ojibwe/ European descent), who is a co-founder of the Center for Native Futures and is exhibiting and contributing to several of these exhibitions. “If one listens to Native people talk about the content of our own work it becomes hard to paint us with the same brush, and that is a good thing. We are not monolithic, we are diverse, and complex.”
Each of these exhibitions was developed by and in close collaboration with Indigenous artists, historians, and community members, giving Indigenous artists decision-making authority for how their stories are told.
Much of the work in these exhibitions is reflective of the artists’ lived experiences and serves to imagine Indigenous futures free from colonial limitations.

New Survey Confirms Impact of Clean Slate Policies in Utah, Pennsylvania, and Michigan
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Clean Slate Initiative (CSI) announced the results of a groundbreaking survey that provides the first comprehensive confirmation of the effectiveness of Clean Slate policies in Utah, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. Conducted by YouGov, the survey polled 800 individuals with arrest or conviction records to assess how Clean Slate laws are transforming lives by sealing eligible arrest and conviction records.
The survey gathered responses from people who have a past arrest or conviction — a group rarely asked about their experiences in research or surveys, and the results show that Clean Slate policies are delivering tangible benefits. Notably, the survey found that over 40% of respondents whose records were sealed automatically reported improvements in their employment, personal finances, and access to public assistance. Additionally, 35% of these respondents reported better family relationships, and 34% noted improved mental health and self-esteem.
“These findings are the first confirmation that Clean Slate laws are working as intended—empowering people to rebuild their
lives without being held back by past mistakes,” said Dr. Laura Chavez, Director of Research and Data at The Clean Slate Initiative. “People who have earned a second chance should have a fair opportunity to fully participate in society. We will continue to evaluate the effectiveness of Clean Slate policies, and it’s promising that people reported noticeable benefits after state-initiated record sealing. With further study, we are confident that we’ll continue to see that removing barriers helps individuals, families, and communities thrive.”
Key Survey Findings:
Employment and Financial Stability: 42% of respondents with automatically sealed records reported improvements in employment and personal finances.
Family and Mental Health: 35% of respondents experienced improved family relationships, and 34% reported positive mental health and self-esteem changes.
Awareness Gap: Despite the success of Clean Slate laws, over half of eligible individuals in Utah, Pennsylvania, and Michigan were unaware of their state’s Clean Slate law—highlighting the need for broader outreach and educa-
tion.
Widespread Support: 78% of the sample, all of whom are directly impacted by the legal system, support Clean Slate policies, with support exceptionally high among Black respondents (88%).
Since the passage of Clean Slate laws in Pennsylvania (2018), Utah (2019), and Michigan (2020), millions of eligible records have been sealed without people having to navigate burdensome and costly petition-based processes. Instead, Clean Slate laws shift the burden from individuals to the state, providing relief to people who often face obstacles like expensive legal fees and complex processes.
“The survey underscores the transformative potential of these laws, but it also highlights a critical need for ongoing education and outreach to ensure more people benefit from record sealing,” added Sheena Meade, Chief Executive Officer of The Clean Slate Initiative. “As Clean Slate policies continue to build momentum in states across the country, we hope this research can help lawmakers understand the need for investing in public notification and awareness to maximize the
benefits for individuals, families, and communities.”
About the Survey:
The Clean Slate Initiative commissioned the survey, which YouGov conducted in collaboration with Dr. Nyron Crawford, Associate Professor of Political Science at Temple University, polled 800 individuals with arrest or conviction records in Utah, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. The respondents reflected diverse demographic backgrounds and were surveyed about their experiences with Clean Slate laws, employment, housing, mental health, and awareness of their eligibility for record sealing.

eligible records, these laws ensure individuals have access to meaningful opportunities to more fully participate in their communities and the workforce.
The Clean Slate Initiative is a non-profit organization that engages bipartisan support to pass and implement laws that automatically seal eligible records for people who meet the requirements. The organization works to build a future where people will no longer be defined by their records and have a fair opportunity to work, get an education, and achieve their full potential.
