Homewood, Ill. -- Emerging artist Vanessa Abron will unveil her captivating art collection at EOS House, 18148 Martin Ave, Homewood, IL 60430, on Thursday, November 21st, from 5-8 p.m. Born and raised in Chicago, Abron’s artistic journey began in her youth, nurtured by a family immersed in music and creativity, and further cultivated during her studies at Dillard University in New Orleans. Living Room Sessions blend artistry and conversations
Continued from page 1
BY TIA CAROL JONES
The inaugural Living Room Session will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7th, at the Kehrein Center for the Arts, located at 5628 W Washington Blvd.
Washington said because the Kehrein Center for the Arts is a beautiful space, it only felt right to use it as a place to pay homage to the literary, musical and artistic renaissance that was present during the Chicago Renaissance, by bringing current artists into the space.
“Many of those artists who were a part of the Chicago Renaissance, that Renaissance took place in their living rooms,” she said.
Graham Washington said the other reason why she wanted to develop the Living Room Sessions, was to harken back to a time when families on the West side of the city would get together in the living room on Saturday mornings, whether it was to watch Soul Train and dance, or to clean the house.
She said it was a way to celebrate what it meant to be family and community while connecting to Black culture and Black music. She said on Soul Train, Don Cornelius would interview the artists who performed on the show, which enabled audiences to not only experience the music and see the performances, but to also hear from the artists themselves.
“We were able to hear about our heritage and our culture, from our leaders,” she said.
The inaugural Living Room Session will celebrate Anjanette Young, an activist and leader whose work led to police reform. Young, who is a licensed Clinical Social Worker, has a nonprofit organization called the I Am Her Foundation. The
foundation provides access to therapeutic services for Black women and girls who need a safe space to speak about racial inequities and trauma without judgement. At the Living Room Session, creatives who have developed art that celebrate Young, and her leadership will be performing and exhibiting their work. Young will be there and be interviewed during the event.
Graham Washington said it is important to have brave spaces, spaces where people don’t have to hold their narrative in order to “keep majorative culture people safe.” She said in brave spaces, everyone is willing to enter the space and to show up as their unapologetic, authentic selves, while recognizing it might ruffle feathers, but there is a commitment to stay present and work through whatever differences or discord might come, be present to the grief that might show up and get to a space of authentic joy as a result of the committment to maintaining a brave space.
Graham Washington hopes that people are informed and get to learn about the work of Young, while being inspired by the artistry, which will always be part of the Living Room Sessions. She also wants the community to be more exposed to the beauty of the arts and leadership that exists on the West side of Chicago.
Also, on Dec. 7th, there will be a Holiday Bazaar, featuring local vendors, as well as health and wellness resources for the community.

Alzheimer’s Association Urges Dementia Caregivers to Prioritize Their Health During National Family Caregivers Month
November is National Family Caregivers and National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month
As part of National Family Caregivers Month and National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month this November, the Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter is shining a spotlight on the critical importance of caregivers’ well-being, encouraging dementia caregivers to make their own health a top priority.
The demands of dementia caregiving can be immense, impacting both physical and emotional health. With over 11 million Americans currently serving as dementia caregivers, the Alzheimer’s Association emphasizes the need for caregivers to maintain their own health as they support loved ones.
“The Race & Health Equity Awards is a celebration of outstanding individuals who have contributed significantly to the fight against racial disparities in healthcare,” said HSI President and CEO Donald Dew.
“They have led the charge to ensure that our healthcare systems have better quality, access and more equity for Black and brown people,” he said.
The following will be recognized for their exemplary work toward race and health equity:
Congressman Danny K. Davis, Member of Congress, 7th District-IL
Dr. Terry Mason, Former Chief Operating Officer, Cook County Department of Public Health
Dr. Vijay Prabhakar, Chairman, Global Strategic Alliance Inc., USA
“We also will highlight our theme, ‘Honoring the Legacy of Historically Black Community Based Organizations,” through a new documentary. So many of our impactful organizations have closed, been forgotten about and need strategies for sustainability, but we have come together to share insights, strategies, build capacity, resources, and visions for improving quality of life for individuals in our communities,” Dew said.
The Race and Health Equity Awards will feature the premiere of the documentary “Heading West 2: If the Lions Don’t Tell Their Story.” Co-produced by Double D Productions, and Habilitative Systems, Inc., the documentary chronicles the enduring impact of Historically Black Community-Based Organizations (HBCBOs) in Chicago, shedding light on their pivotal role in the fight for social justice, mental health, community empowerment, and systemic change across generations.
“While caregiving can be incredibly rewarding, it also brings high levels of stress that can affect a caregiver’s health,” said Delia Jervier, Executive Director Alzheimer’s Association Illinois Chapter. “Caregivers should not feel alone on this journey. The Alzheimer’s Association offers support, resources, and encouragement to help caregivers take care of themselves as they care for others.”
Caregivers of those living with Alzheimer’s often report high levels of stress and face significant health challenges. More than half of dementia caregivers experience elevated emotional and physical strain, with 74% expressing concerns about maintaining their own health.
To help caregivers balance their own health needs with their caregiving roles, the Alzheimer’s Association offers these vital tips:
• Take Time for Yourself: Caregivers often feel guilty stepping away, but a short break can recharge energy and reduce stress. Seek support from friends, family, or respite care services.
• Educate Yourself on Dementia: Understanding the progression and challenges of dementia can empower caregivers to navigate changes and manage their expectations.
• Build a Support Network: Support groups and online communities like ALZConnected can connect caregivers with others who understand their journey.
• Prioritize Physical Health: Balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and quality sleep are essential for caregivers’ health and stamina.

• Be Mindful of Burnout: Prolonged stress can lead to burnout, a state of physical and mental exhaustion. The Alzheimer’s Association offers a Caregiver Stress Check to help caregivers assess their well-being.
• Accept Changing Needs: As dementia progresses, care needs intensify. Proactively researching care options can help families prepare for these transitions.
“ Staying connected and reaching out for support is crucial,” Jervier added. “Caregivers who care for themselves first are often better equipped to provide quality care.”
To honor the invaluable contributions of dementia caregivers, the Alzheimer’s Association invites everyone to share messages of support and thanks at alz.org/nadam during National Family Caregivers Month.

Meet The Founder of a Black-Owned Digital Marketing Agency Devoted to Helping Black Businesses Thrive Online
Today, EraBright stands as a dedicated partner for Black-owned companies, committed to fostering a stronger Black economy and a more inclusive online marketplace through impactful digital strategies and accessible education.
(Black PR Wire) JaMichael Mitchell, the founder of EraBright, has been a force in digital marketing since 2011. With over a decade of experience working for some of the nation’s top agencies and managing campaigns for globally recognized brands, JaMichael took a leap in 2016 to build something of his own. Inspired by his passion for empowering Black-owned businesses, he resigned from his corporate role to launch EraBright—a Black-owned digital marketing agency committed to helping Black businesses succeed in today’s competitive digital landscape.
Education and Credentials
JaMichael’s journey began with his education at Fayetteville State University, a prominent HBCU, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. He furthered his expertise with a Master’s in Internet Marketing from Full Sail University and holds various digital marketing certifications, including Google Analytics, Google Ads, and HubSpot, among others. These experiences and credentials have deepened his understanding
of digital marketing and fueled his dedication to driving positive economic change within the Black community.
Understanding the Challenges Black Businesses Face Online
After witnessing firsthand the challenges Black-owned businesses face in reaching and resonating with their audiences, JaMichael was motivated to create solutions specifically tailored to their needs. Many traditional agencies lack the cultural insight necessary to market effectively to diverse communities, often causing Black businesses—and those with primarily Black clientele—to pay more for quality leads and conversions.
Since its founding, EraBright has bridged this gap, helping over 200 Black-owned businesses, including local enterprises, startups, tech companies, and more, achieve measurable success. Through specialized brand awareness and lead generation strategies—such as search engine optimization, social media marketing, and targeted online advertising—EraBright creates campaigns that genuinely
connect with the unique audiences Black-owned businesses aim to reach, empowering them to thrive in today’s digital landscape.
EraBright Academy: Helping Black DIY Entrepreneurs
Recognizing the growing interest in self-guided digital marketing, JaMichael recently launched EraBright Academy, a learning branch offering courses and webinars for DIY entrepreneurs. Through this initiative, EraBright Academy equips Black entrepreneurs with the knowledge and skills to manage their own digital marketing, empowering them to grow their businesses independently.
Today, EraBright stands as a dedicated partner for Black-owned companies, committed to fostering a stronger Black economy and a more inclusive online marketplace through impactful digital strategies and accessible education.

Meet Citrine, November’s Golden Gemstone
Citrine, one of November’s birthstones (alongside topaz), radiates warmth and is known for its sunny spectrum from pale yellow to smoky brown. The gem belongs to the quartz family and is a symbol of warmth and affection.
Historically, deep red citrines were highly valued, though today, vibrant yellow and orange hues are more desirable. Unique bi-colored stones, known as ametrine, form when citrine develops alongside amethyst or smoky quartz. Interestingly, much of the citrine available today is created by heat-treating amethyst to achieve its golden color.
Named after the French word citrin, meaning “lemon,” Brazil remains the largest citrine producer, although this gemstone is also found in Argentina, Bolivia, France, Madagascar, Myanmar, Namibia, Russia, Scotland, Spain, Uruguay, and Zambia.
A European History of Citrine
Originally known as “gold topaz,” citrine gained popularity in Europe, especially as the only naturally golden gemstone available at the time. Its vibrant hue was celebrated by a society with an appetite for one-of-a-kind jewelry.
Citrine’s Rise in America
Citrine reached new heights of popularity in the U.S. during the Art Deco era of the 1920s and
1930s, set in elaborate platinum and the newly popular white gold designs. Hollywood icons like Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford championed large citrine rings, fueling its appeal. After WWII, large citrines paired beautifully with pink or rose gold in statement pieces that defined the Retro period. Today, this gemstone continues to make a statement, with designers like David Yurman and Tiffany & Co. incorporating it into fashion-forward jewelry.
Mystical and Healing Properties
Citrine has long been dubbed the “success stone” and “merchant’s stone” for its association with prosperity and abundance. Shopkeepers often place citrine in cash registers to attract wealth. Believed to stabilize emotions and boost confidence, citrine is also said to alleviate depression, self-doubt, and mood swings. It has a long history in holistic treatments, thought to aid the stomach, thyroid, kidneys, heart, liver, and digestion, while promoting restful sleep.

What You Don’t Know About Reverse Mortgages That Might Hurt You
Let me tell you what the lack of knowledge may cost a family that lives in Chatham. Ms. B had two children that preceded her in death, leaving her to raise the son of her deceased son. When her grandson turned eighteen, Ms. B put his name on the deed of her mortgage free four flat building in Chatham.
Bren Sheriff
Ms. B passed and the grandson believed that he was now the owner of the four-unit building. About a month after his grandmother’s death, a letter addressed to the ESTATE OF MS B arrived. He got the shock of his life when he opened the letter and learned that his grandmother had secured a reverse mortgage on their building. The letter was a demand for payment in full of over $200,000. Hopefully, the fact that Ms. B had been diagnosed with dementia at the time she signed the reverse mortgage may be the grandson’s saving grace.
The grandson has retained an attorney to represent him against the mortgage company. I will report updates as they occur.
Bye for now,
Bren.

On November 5, Illinois voters delivered a resounding 60% landslide victory for the Illinois Property Tax Relief Amendment Referendum marking the first time in state history that voters had a direct referendum chance to vote on a specific measure to fund property tax relief for over 3 million households in Illinois.
The advisory referendum which was placed on the ballot by the General Assembly and Governor asked “Should the Illinois Constitution be amended to create an additional 3% tax on income greater than $1,000,000 for the purpose of dedicating funds raised to property tax relief?”
The property tax burden is a major factor in the cost of living for more than 3 million Illinois homeowners who pay more than $23.2 billion in residential property taxes every year.
After New Jersey, Illinois has the second highest property taxes in the nation and eight Illinois counties - Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, Kane, McHenry, Kendall, and DeKalb - are among the highest property tax counties in America.
Voters in each of these eight counties approved the property tax relief referendum by wide margins as well as voters in Champaign, Rock Island, Peoria, Winnebago, McLean, Madison, St. Clair, Sangamon, Vermilion, Macon, LaSalle, Kankakee, Jackson, and Saline counties. The referendum was approved in urban, suburban, and rural areas across the state.
“The people of Illinois have spoken in a
language that every public official in the state should understand - it’s time for a constitutional amendment mandating relief from unfair and back-breaking property taxes,” said former Illinois Governor Pat Quinn.
The Illinois Department of Revenue has estimated that a millionaire surcharge of 3% on individual annual income over $1 million would generate $4.5 billion for property tax relief.
According to most recent data, Illinois has 77,323 millionaires who declare more than $1 million in net income on their annual income tax returns. Millionaires in Illinois currently have a lighter income tax rate burden than millionaires in 26 states and the District of Columbia. The Illinois tax code is considered one of the 10 most unfair codes in the country.
In 2019, the General Assembly and Governor enacted legislation creating the Illinois Property Tax Relief Fund as a special fund in the state treasury. The law calls for annual property tax rebates to be given to each of the state’s more than 3 million households eligible for the household exemption.
“The Property Tax Relief Fund law is an administratively simple and straightforward mechanism to distribute annual property tax rebates to more than 3 million Illinois households from the billions of dollars generated by a 3% income tax surcharge on the state’s 77,323 millionaires,” said Quinn.

Westside, Southside, No side: the disappearance of Chicago’s black population and its political influence
November 6th was a door opening to a new reality. While the worst of the cruelty of the incoming administration will be muted for Chicagoans we must fortify ourselves and communities for what is to come. According to the 2020 Census, Chicago’s Black population declined by approximately 10% from 2010 to 2020, following a 17% decline from 2000 to 2010. Black residents now make up around 29% of Chicago’s population, down from 37% in 1980. Westside communities; Austin, West Garfield Park, and North Lawndale are among the areas with significant population loss. Southside neighborhood; Englewood, Roseland, and Greater Grand Crossing similarly are facing decline particularly Englewood where the population decreased by over 25% from 2000 to 2022. These statistics convey the reality of emptying neighborhoods where entire blocks sit vacant, locally owned businesses are rare, and there is a palpable sense of desertion. This is the position from which our communities must face the next four years of economic, policy, and environmental shifts. This is not a position of strength. At stake in this particularly vulnerable moment is inevitability a corresponding decline in the Black power base in Chicago. That is a haunting thought as we prepare to weather the shifting landscape.
Community, cohesion, and coalition building are our pathways through. Inside our neighborhoods we must unify around neighborhood advancing strategies. Across our communities we must organize our leaders and institutions to craft and advance a city-wide black agenda. The Black power movements that gave us liberty, desegregation, voting and civil rights relied on the development and execution of an approach to community survival that had a broad base of support. Westside, southside, our side or no side.
New in 2025, all Medicare plans will include a $2,000 cap on what you pay out of pocket for covered prescription drugs.
The cap only applies to drugs that are covered by your plan, so it’s more important than ever to review your plan options to make sure your drugs are covered.

The Property Tax Relief Amendment will need three-fifths approval from the members of the Illinois House and Senate by May 3, 2026 to go on the 2026 general election ballot for referendum approval by Illinois voters.
In 1980, Quinn spearheaded the initiative petition and referendum drive that won passage of the Cutback Amendment, a constitutional amendment which reduced the size of the Illinois House from 177 members to 118.

Thousands of Cook County property owners who owe less than $1,000 risk having their tax debt auctioned at an Annual Tax Sale that begins Tuesday, Dec. 10, Treasurer Maria Pappas said today.
To find out if your property is on the Annual Tax Sale list:
• Go to cookcountytreasurer.com
• Use the purple box on the home page labeled “Your Property Tax Overview” and search using an address or Property Index Number (PIN)
• A banner with an urgent warning will appear if your property is on the Annual Tax Sale list
The four-day Annual Tax Sale that begins Dec. 10 is for Tax Year 2022 bills that were due in 2023. By law the Annual Tax Sale is held within 13 months of the Second Installment due date, which was Dec. 1, 2023 for Tax Year 2022.
Owners of 51,811 properties owe more than $207 million in taxes that were due in 2023. Of those, 28,541 owe more than $1,000 while 23,270 owe less than $1,000, including owners of 16,181 properties in Chicago and 7,089 parcels in suburban Cook County.
“The threat of hav-
ing your delinquent taxes auctioned at the Annual Tax Sale should be a powerful motivator to pay your bill,” Pappas said. “Once a tax buyer acquires your debt you must redeem your delinquent taxes or you could lose your home.”
The Treasurer’s Office sent certified letters to owners of properties on the Annual Tax Sale list. However, each year the U.S. Postal Service returns thousands of certified notices because property owners have not kept their mailing addresses up to date or because a property is vacant or abandoned.
If an owner does not redeem taxes sold at the Annual Tax Sale a tax buyer could take possession of the property itself. The process takes about two and a half years for residences and about a year for commercial properties.
In addition to certified mailings the Treasurer’s Office published lists of properties with delinquencies tax lists in local newspapers. A list of properties on the Annual Tax Sale list is posted at cookcountytreasurer.com.

NAACP Launches Innovative $200 Million Fund of Funds to Transform the Venture Capital Landscape
(Black PR Wire) WASHINGTON – Recently, during a dealmaking summit for investors, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs in New York City, the NAACP, the nation’s largest civil rights organization, announced the launch of NAACP Capital, a fund of funds that will invest in fund managers and startups that are focused on closing gaps facing communities of color. The fund, which seeks to raise $200 million, was conceptualized in partnership with Kapor Capital and Kapor Center, along with a team of nine venture fund managers.
NAACP President & CEO, Derrick Johnson released the following statement in celebration of the Fund’s launch:
“As an ever-evolving legacy organization, the NAACP knows that innovation is borne out of inclusivity. Impact investing has the power to drive historic financial returns and uplift overlooked communities. Right now, deeply entrenched systemic barriers are curtailing the innovative progress necessary to breed healthy competition in a global economy. We’re seeking to change that. Investment is the backbone of impact, and impact investing will shape socioeconomics for generations to come. It’s time to invest in fund managers who share a forward-looking vision that invests in innovation and technology, ensuring the economy works for everybody, not just a select few.”
For over 115 years, the NAACP has led the fight for equal rights and opportunities. As part of the #KeepAdvancing campaign – a modernized approach to civic engagement – NAACP Capital is a natural extension of the Association’s deep heritage in the fight for social justice and a more inclusive economy. Many of the important issues that the NAACP has long fought for, from education to healthcare to financial access, are growing markets for startup innovation. By investing in fund managers focusing on these markets and startups directly, NAACP Capital will stake the NAACP into the technology and venture capital ecosystem.
To lead NAACP’s bold new venture, the Association has hired Jay Lundy as Managing Director of NAACP Capital. Jay Lundy is an experi -
enced venture capital investor and management consultant who started his career in education and impact investing.
“The NAACP and community engagement have long played a role in my family, which makes me even more excited to lead this pivotal effort and launch this historic fund,” said Jay Lundy, managing director of NAACP Capital. “Through this fund, we have an opportunity to invest and capitalize the next generation of managers and founders who will work to bring technology and innovation into our communities. Our investment strategy will target the intersection of generational impact and tech innovation and we believe that this holistic approach will allow us to drive both impact at scale and generate top returns on investment.”
NAACP Capital will operate as a standard fund of funds and co-investing strategy that will seek to make the venture ecosystem more equitable. In addition to capital, NAACP Capital will provide additional resources and support to the managers and founders it invests in to close racial equity gaps and increase the representation of people of color across the tech ecosystem. (StatePoint) As the holiday season approaches, many consumers are planning to kick off their shopping earlier this year, aiming to lock in low prices, take advantage of promotions, and ensure all their gifts arrive on time. A recent survey by Sensormatic Solutions reveals key insights that can guide both shoppers and retailers during this busy time.
According to the survey, 52% of respondents plan to start their holiday shopping earlier than last year, and while shoppers are looking for deals, 48% plan to spend more than they did last year.
“Understanding consumer trends is critical for both shoppers and retailers alike,” said Christa Anz, global marketing leader, Sensormatic Solutions. “This survey highlights important considerations that can enhance the shopping experience and inform retail strategies.”
Here are some of the survey’s top findings:
• Early Shopping Trends: Over half (54%) of shoppers plan to begin their holiday shopping before November. This trend indicates a shift towards early planning to secure deals and avoid the rush of the season’s busiest shopping days. Early shopping also helps lock in the best prices and ensure stock availability.
• Preferred Pickup Options: This year, 42% of shoppers plan to use Buy-OnlinePick-Up-in-Store (BOPIS), and 35% will opt for curbside pickup. However, 29% of respondents are concerned about possible long wait times, suggesting to retailers the importance of efficient customer service during peak hours and the need to provide several pick up options.
• Spending Management: While nearly half of shoppers plan to spend more this year, 52% of respondents noted they are creating a shopping list to avoid impulse purchases. In fact, 64% of younger shoppers have used recent deal days and flash sales to maximize their spending.
• Prioritize Safety: Safety is key to a productive holiday shopping season. In fact, 69% of consumers feel safer with visible security measures such as security personnel, surveillance cameras, and Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) tags, and 34% of them consider these features essential for in-store shopping. This aligns with performance data that suggests such visual deterrents can effectively reduce theft and organized retail crime. Retailers should prioritize safety features, such as surveillance cameras and security personnel, to foster a positive shopping environment. For more holiday shopping insights, visit sensormatic.com.
This holiday season presents an opportunity for both consumers and retailers to adapt to evolving shopping behaviors. By understanding these insights, retailers can better meet customer expectations, while shoppers can enjoy a more informed and relaxed shopping experience.
