FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW EV CHARGING STATIONS
SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today the second official notice of funding opportunity through the Illinois National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, which will provide up to approximately $24 million for the construction of charging stations across the state. The second funding opportunity aims to make approximately 20 awards, building upon the 37 awards from the first NEVI funding opportunity announced by IDOT in September and aligning with Gov. JB Pritzker’s goal to have 1 million electric vehicles on Illinois roads by 2030.
“Illinois is leading the electric vehicle revolution, and my administration continues to build on our momentum by investing in EV charging infrastructure across our state,” said Gov. Pritzker. “Through our Illinois NEVI Program, this second funding opportunity will support the construction of charging stations to provide convenient access to sustainable transportation for all Illinoisans. I highly encourage all eligible entities to apply to this funding opportunity.”
Applications for funding must be submitted by Dec. 17 at 11:59 p.m. All application materials can be found on IDOT’s website at idot.click/ drive-electric. Awards are anticipated to be announced in early 2025.
Selected locations will have at least four fast-charging ports, each of which can fully charge a typical EV in less than 30 minutes. When complete, these projects will provide access to fast charging at least every 50 miles along all Illinois interstates.
“Under the leadership of Gov. Pritzker, IDOT is committed to creating and supporting safe, reliable options for how people wish to travel,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Omer Osman. “The funding made available via our federal partners will help sustain a charging infrastructure that benefits drivers in communities large and small, while also providing economic opportunity by drawing travelers and generating revenue for local businesses.”

PRAIRIE STATE BOARD CHAIR NAMED GLENWOOD VILLAGE CLERK
Longtime community organizer and youth leader fills vacant role
A community organizer and decades-long Southland resident was recently sworn in as the new Village Clerk in Glenwood.
Camiella Williams began her new role after Mayor Ronald J. Gardiner appointed her to the position, which had been vacant since Sandra Washington stepped down in the summer.
Williams works as a mentor for GoodKidsMadCity, a Chicago-based anti-violence organization. She also serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Prairie State College and is a volunteer for U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly’s violence prevention task force.
As Clerk, Williams is responsible for maintaining village records, including village board documents, while also serving as a local election official and registrar for voters. She is also responsible for village licensing and compliance with state and federal regulations. The 37-year-old is a graduate of Governors State University who lives in Glenwood’s Forest neighborhood and is a longtime supporter of Glenwood Hawks basketball.
“Glenwood is my home and I want to invest not just my tax dollars, but my time and work together to build a better community,” said Williams, a mother of two who has one son at Prairie State and another at Hickory Bend Elementary. “I’m looking forward to getting more involved with community events, summer programs, job creation for our young people and just building a better community.”
She credits Rev. Michael Pfleger, Sen. Jackie Collins, Cook County Commissioner Monica Gordon and Rep. Kelly as mentors who have helped her gain experience in community organizing, intergovernmental relations and grant writing. She helped advocate for the Cook County Assault Weapons Ban before expanding to work with the Blair Holt Memorial Foundation and Brady United, among other anti-violence efforts.
Lyric Unlimited’s Artist-in-Residence Performs First Recital
Continued from page 1
BY TIA CAROL JONES
Slack, Lyric Unlimited’s Artist-in-Residence performed her recital “Of Thee I Sing! Songs of Love and Justice” in the Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Grand Foyer at Lyric Opera of Chicago on Tuesday, November 12. “Of Thee I Sing” was the first of three recitals Slack will present as part of her residency. The recital was curated by Slack in the height of the pandemic and after the murder of George Floyd.
“Curated by Miss Slack with intention and care, this impactful program features songs exploring the themes of love and justice, as it is a reminder to us all that no matter your race, ethnicity, politics, etc., we all are human,” said Afton Battle, Vice President of Lyric Unlimited and Artistic Operations. “This is a musical journey of soaring melodies and beautiful text, rooted in the shared un derstanding that without love there can never be liberty and justice for all.”
The recital also featured Langston Hughes’ 1938 poem, The Kids Who Die, set by American composer Scott Gendel. After a rousing standing ovation and calls for Encore, Slack sang “I Don’t Feel Noways Tired” by James Cleveland to finish out the recital.
“I never know what the response will be to this program, but tonight was no different than past performances. The sighs, the snif fles, the speechless greetings
from my beautiful audience with tears in their eyes is the norm. I find myself constantly fighting back the flood of emotions throughout the evening because my job is to tell the story and not be overcome by the emotion. With this power packed program of American songs, I do believe that my audiences leave the space changed. Understanding that everyone deserves justice and that LOVE IS THE FORCE necessary for the change we want to see,” Slack said in a statement.
The second recital, Dream Variations – Nina, Lena, and Tina, will take place on Feb. 26th at Northwestern University and a third, Beyond the Years, on June 14th. Slack will also present masterclasses at Northwestern and DePaul University, career talks at Merit School of Music and St. Philip Neri Catholic School, in the city’s South Shore community. Slack will debut a web series with Nicole Heaston and and Zoie Reams. Heaston is in the role of Claire in “The Listeners” and Perez is in the role of Mimi in “La Boheme” and Reams is in the role of the mother in “Blue.” For more information about Karen Slack, visit sopranokarenslack.com. Gov. Pritzker Joins U.S. EPA to Announce Clean Energy and Pollution Reduction Grants for Illinois
Climate Pollution Reduction Grant Program and Clean Ports Program propel Illinois towards a clean energy
CHICAGO - Governor JB Pritzker joined representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Illinois EPA Director James Jennings to celebrate funding for Illinois provided by U.S. EPA through the Inflation Reduction Act. The first grant, previously announced in July, was funded through the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) implementation program, totaling $430 million.
Illinois was also selected to receive two awards totaling $95 million through EPA’s Clean Ports Program, which was announced by EPA in late October.
“This unprecedented funding from the Biden-Harris administration will help build a greener, cleaner, healthier future for Illinois residents,” said EPA Region 5 Administrator Debra Shore. “EPA congratulates Gov. Pritzker for his leadership and innovative plans to fight climate change in Illinois and
future
power the state’s economy through zero-emission technologies and resources.”
The CPRG program is providing funding to implement projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Nearly 300 applications were submitted by entities nationwide for general CPRG implementation competition totaling nearly $33 billion in funding requests. U.S. EPA awarded 25 grants totaling $4.3 billion, with Illinois being the third largest award. This is the second phase of CPRG funding, and Illinois was initially awarded $3M for planning through CPRG Phase I in the summer of 2023.
U.S. EPA’s Clean Ports Program will support the deployment of zero-emission vehicles and infrastructure at water ports across Illinois. The program will also fund planning activities to build the

Add A Finance Conversation To Your Holiday Gathering This Year Might Be Wise
We are in the Holiday Season of the year, stretching from Thanksgiving through the New Year. It is during this time of year that families are most likely to come together for events that include food, folks, and fun. This year I suggest that you add another “F” to the list – family finances, a too often forgotten area of family functions.
Bren Sheriff
Too many Black families do not want to engage in conversations relating to the inevitable, aging and death. However, these are conversations that we should be having. Black families that do not plan for these life events are more likely to lose, unnecessarily, valuable family assets. Untold wealth is lost by Black families, due to our lack of planning for the inevitable.
In this Holiday Season of Thanksgiving, give thanks for all your blessings and express your good stewardship as scripture advises in Proverbs 13:22, create generational wealth.
May you and yours give thanks for the many blessings both big and small that you have experienced; Remember that it is your attitude of gratitude from which your blessings continue to flow. So, in all things be thankful, as Paul advised us in Thessalonians 5:18.
Have a blessed and happy Thanksgiving.
Bye for now, Bren

capacity of ports to transition to zero-emission operations over time. Illinois was selected for two grants through the program, a $92 million deployment award for zero-emission technology deployment, and a $3 million award for climate and air quality planning. In April, the Illinois EPA solicited projects through a competitive Call for Partners. Through that solicitation, the Illinois EPA partnered with the Illinois International Port District (IIPD), the Kaskaskia Regional Port District, the Rock Island County Metropolitan Mass Transit District (MetroLINK), the Shawneetown Regional Port District, and the Upper Mississippi River International Port District for the deployment grant. This $92 million zero-emission technology deployment award will fund zero-emission locomotives, drayage trucks, and other freight-handling equipment such as skid steers and forklifts, as well as electric vehicle chargers, hydrogen dispensers, solar power, and on-site battery storage.
“I’m thrilled that Illinois continues to benefit from the Inflation Reduction Act with this federal funding through EPA’s Clean Ports Program and Climate Pollution Reduction Grant,” said U.S. Senator Dick Durbin. “All Illinoisans deserve

clean air to breathe and clean water to drink, and these initiatives make that a reality for our communities that have long been overburdened by industrial pollution. With these significant investments, we will help protect the planet for the next generation by investing in climate-smart agriculture and decarbonization, reduce air pollution, and facilitate Illinois’ goal to reach 100% carbon-free power by 2045.”
In addition to funding freight-handling equipment, the zero-emission technology deployment grant will support the purchase of a battery-electric passenger ferry in the Quad Cities to replace a diesel-powered ferry currently operated by MetroLINK.
The planning grant will cover several port districts: Illinois Waterway Ports Commission (includes five port districts), the Mid America Intermodal Authority Port District, and the Upper Mississippi River International Port District.
Prior to the Clean Ports and CPRG selections, Illinois was already recognized as a national leader on climate following the implementation of the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, which puts the state’s power sector on the path to decarbonization.

‘Champions for Financial Legacy’ Program for HBCUs Launches
NEW YORK, PRNewswire -- The Shawn Carter Foundation, with generous support from Toyota Motor North America, is proud to introduce Champions for Financial Legacy (CFFL), a comprehensive financial education initiative designed to empower students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and surrounding communities.
Developed in collaboration with The Coalition for Equity and Opportunity at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, CFFL is modeled after Professor Keith Weigelt’s accredited curriculum at the Wharton School and Bridges to Wealth, a financial education and wealth-building program that Dr. Weigelt has offered to the Shawn Carter Foundation community of scholars and families since 2017.
CFFL is the latest initiative resulting from the ongoing collaboration between the Shawn Carter Foundation (SCF) and Toyota Motor North America, a long-time supporter of SCF’s annual HBCU Bus Tour. With Toyota’s generous support of CFFL, the vision to expand the program to HBCU students and local communities is made possible.
“We are excited to see our partnership with the Shawn Carter Foundation evolve to include this innovative initiative,” said Monica Womack, general manager, D+I and community engagement, Toyota. “One that not only provides resources to HBCU students but also reaches the heart of the community, through advocacy for financial literacy.”
CFFL aims to reduce the growing wealth gap by equipping students with the financial knowledge and skills needed for economic success and social mobility. Topics include budgeting, market risks and returns, mutual funds, credit scores, stock markets, and more. By fostering financial fluency and community engagement, the program seeks to change the trajectory of intergenerational wealth and build a more equitable future.
“Every day at the Shawn Carter Foundation, we dedicate ourselves to uplifting students and communities that are underserved,” said Dr. Gloria Carter, Shawn Carter Foundation CEO and Co-Founder. “To launch a financial education program that will reach more students and communities, along with dedicated partners like Toyota and the Wharton School of Business, is a vision we are finally seeing come to fruition. We are so excited to see the incredible impact of CFFL unfold and look forward to its growth.”
“One way to strengthen the resiliency of middle-class households is to increase their ability to generate wealth,” said Dr. Keith Weigelt, Marks-Darivoff Family Professor of Strategy at The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and Founder of Bridges to Wealth. “I thank both the Shawn Carter Foundation and Toyota for their foresight in addressing a long-neglected social disparity.”
The curriculum includes real-world applications and service-learning components, allowing students to apply their financial knowledge in community settings, thereby expanding the ecosystem of wealth-building and fostering local development.
“The Wharton Coalition for Equity and Opportunity (CEO) is pleased to partner with the Shawn Carter Foundation and Toyota in launching the financial legacy program with several HBCUs. This partnership will help us remain committed to closing the wealth gap through an evidence-based approach,” said Dr. Fareeda Griffith, CEO managing director.
The inaugural CFFL program will be implemented in Spring 2025 at Lincoln University, Norfolk State University, and Virginia State University, with plans to expand to other HBCUs. University-appointed faculty from each school will receive free professional development training, and trained student ambassadors will amplify the Champions for Financial Legacy course offerings on their respective campuses for enrollment.

8 Ways to Live Healthier in 2025
MISSION, Kan., PRNewswire -- (Family Features) The last decade has seen a surge in cardiovascular risk factors such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity, each of which raises the risks of developing heart disease and stroke. These trends are leading researchers to conclude that the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) will continue to rise.
More than 60% of U.S. adults will have some type of CVD by 2050, according to forecasted projections from the American Heart Association, which is celebrating 100 years of lifesaving service as the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all. Additionally, total costs related to CVD are expected to nearly triple in that time to more than $1.8 trillion.
The increase will be driven by an older, more diverse population, but these risk factors are rising even among children and adults.
“We recognize the landscape of cardiovascular health will change over the next three decades because of the coming tsunami of rising health care costs, an older population living longer and increasing numbers of people from under-resourced populations,” said American Heart Association volunteer Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA. “Yet these are still leading causes of death and disability in the U.S.”
While continued systematic changes are needed in science, policy and health care, the majority of CVD is preventable at an individual level. You can help turn the tide on the dire outlook of CVD while improving your own health by following and encouraging others to follow the American Heart Associa-
tion’s “Life’s Essential 8.” Eat better. Aim for an overall healthy eating pattern including whole foods, fruits and vegetables, lean protein, nuts, seeds and cooking with olive and canola oils.
Be active. Adults should get 2 1/2 hours of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week. Kids should have 60 minutes every day, including play and structured activities. Quit tobacco. Use of inhaled nicotine delivery products, which includes traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes and vaping, is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.
Get healthy sleep. Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Children require 1016 hours for ages 5 and younger, including naps; 9-12 hours for ages 6-12; and 8-10 hours for ages 13-18. Manage weight. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight has many benefits. Body mass index is a useful gauge. Optimal BMI is less than 25, but less than 18.5 is considered underweight. You can
calculate it online or consult a health care professional.
Control cholesterol. High levels of non-HDL, or “bad,” cholesterol can lead to heart disease. Your health care professional can consider non-HDL cholesterol as the preferred number to monitor, rather than total cholesterol, because it can be measured without fasting beforehand and is reliably calculated among all people. Manage blood sugar. Most of the food you eat is turned into glucose (or blood sugar) your body uses as energy. Over time, high levels of blood sugar can damage your heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves. Manage blood pressure. Keeping your blood pressure within acceptable ranges can keep you healthier longer. Levels less than 120/80 mm Hg are optimal. High blood pressure is defined as 130-139 mm Hg systolic pressure (the top number in a reading) or 80-89 mm Hg diastolic pressure (bottom number).

Helping Students With Disabilities Pay for College
(StatePoint) Every student deserves a fair shot. Fortunately, opportunities exist to help people with disabilities pursue the education and training they need to succeed in their chosen career path.
Since 2017, Wells Fargo has partnered with Scholarship America to award 253 renewable scholarships to students with disabilities. Recently renamed “The Stacey Milbern Scholarship” after the pioneering activist, the scholarships open doors to new opportunities and foster greater accessibility for all.
Stacey Milbern was a Korean American activist who helped create the disability justice movement and advocated for fair treatment of all disabled people. Born with congenital muscular dystrophy, a genetic degenerative disease, Milbern eventually became reliant on a scooter, a tracheostomy tube and a ventilator. Despite living with challenges, she found the strength to dedicate herself to disability justice from a young age. While she was still a student, she worked to have disability history added to the school curriculum and raised awareness of disability rights through her blog and other outreach efforts. In adulthood, she founded the Disability Justice Culture Club, helped organize protests, and worked to meet
the needs of disabled and unhoused people during the early days of the pandemic. She also brought her
unique perspective to corporate America, serving as Wells Fargo’s accommodations management consultant, and was an impact producer for the Netflix documentary “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution,” which centers on the lives and voices of disabled Americans. In 2025, Stacey’s legacy will be celebrated by the U.S. Mint along with Ida B. Wells, Dr. Vera Rubin, and other honorees as part of the American Women Quarters Program.
“Milbern passed away in 2020, but her achievements are honored in many ways, including in the Wells Fargo Stacey Milbern Scholarship. Wells Fargo was honored to receive an Irving Innovation Award from Scholarship America for its decision to rename our scholarship after her, and it serves as a testament to her legacy in advancing accessibility to education for students with disabilities,” says Andrew Holbrook, chief accessibility officer for Diverse Segments, Representation and Inclusion at Wells Fargo.
This year, the program will award renewable scholarships of up to $2,500 for full-time students and renewable scholarships of up to $1,250 for part-time students who plan to enroll at an accredited two- or four-year college or university in the United States for the upcoming academic year. For more information about the scholarship and to register to be notified when it is available in February 2025, visit scholarshipamerica.org. For more information about paying for college, visit collegesteps.wf.com.
“At a time when a college degree in the United States has never been more expensive, it is essential to create more pathways to success for students of all backgrounds,” says Holbrook.
