Chicago, Ill. –Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White released the following statement announcing his support for proposed gun reform bill HB5855, the Protect Illinois Communities Act:

“I am proud to stand with Illinois lawmakers as they work to pass life-saving gun safety legislation to protect our communities. As a veteran, I am acutely aware that our streets should not be flooded with weapons appropriate for a warzone. While I respect the rights of responsible gun owners, guns are falling into the wrong hands far too often, especially guns that are designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible. I urge legislators to come together and pass much needed reforms. It’s time to take action; the lives of Illinoisans depend on it.”

The Protect Illinois Communities Act, introduced by Rep. Bob Morgan earlier this month, includes legislation that would ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines, facilitate better implementation and efficacy of Illinois’s Firearm Restraining Order (FRPO) law, raise the minimum age to obtain a FOID card to 21, and address illegal gun trafficking in the state.

A poll released by Everytown for Gun Safety last week demonstrated that these gun safety measures have widespread support across the state. Overall, 52% of Illinoisans believe gun laws in Illinois should be stronger, including nearly three quarters of Black voters and 56% of Hispanic voters. A ban on assault weapons has the support of 58% of Illinoisans and two-thirds of voters support increasing the minimum age to obtain a FOID card from 18 to 21.

Cook County, Ill. – Donna Miller is joining a select group of county elected officials as part of the National Association of Counties’ County Officials advancing Racial Equity (CORE) in Justice Network for their commitment to identifying and eliminating racial and ethnic disparities in the local criminal legal system.

Donna Miller has led Cook County in efforts to understand disparities within the local criminal legal system and support programs, practices, funding and policies to advance racial equity. Their continued commitment helps improve outcomes for all community members, enhance public safety and ensure all residents have an opportunity to thrive.

As a participant of the CORE Justice Network, Donna Miller will engage with fellow elected officials from across the country who are building similar efforts in their jurisdictions. Midwest Health Equity Coalition aims to improve healthcare access

The Midwest Health Equity Coalition was created after a conversation between Eric Whitaker, MD, MPH, Founder and Executive Chairman of Zing Health, and the Healthcare Advisor Andy Slavitt, along with others in the healthcare industry. Slavitt, who is the former Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, expressed that he wished there were more clinical models and more data that would help support his agency’s desire to meet their health equity goals.

“As a policy maker, you need people who are close to the ground, and to see what they see, see what the challenges are, so you can work on policy that can improve the situation,” Whitaker said. The Midwest Health Equity Coalition health systems and health associations throughout the Midwest were contacted, with the idea to come together to reduce racial health disparities that affect seniors who have Diabetes and other Metabolic Syndromes to see if inroads could be made. The next topic the coalition would look at is behavioral health.

There will be six working groups, with the goal of being a thorough partner with the federal government around health equity. Those working groups include a clinical model, a data support model, a benefit design, a policy, a marketing and outreach and payment.

With the working groups, the aim is to shine a light on best practices so they can be implemented throughout the

country. For instance, because Whitaker’s Zing Health is a payer it can design benefits for people who have its insurance. At Zing Health, insulin is zero cost for those with Type 1 Diabetes. It is also covering the cost of Continuous Glucose Monitoring.

“This is an example of a technological inequity that we’re trying to solve. When new technology is introduced, it usually goes to the well to do initially, and over time, it makes it way to the more vulnerable population. This is an instance where, currently, there are no plans that are offering this at zero cost,” Whitaker said.

Whitaker believes if there are services that are not covered by other federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, health systems and healthcare centers should pay for things that are impactful, like the Continuous Glucose Monitoring. Zing Health is designing its benefits to meet the needs of seniors who need this kind of technology for their health.

Currently, Zing Health, CareJourney, Illinois Primary Health Care Association and Sinai are part of the Midwest Health Equity Coalition.

“There’s a lot of great work being done by the institutions in the Coalition and others, and we developed a compendium of best practices at these institutions as a living breathing document, that as new things are added, we can update the compendium,” Whitaker said. “This will allow other health systems, other FQHC (Fairly Qualified Health Care Systems) to replicate successes and learn from some of the work that’s already being done by some of our Coalition partners.”

SAMHSA Proposes Update to Federal Rules to Expand Access to Opioid Use Disorder Treatment and Help Close Gap in Care

Changes Would Make Permanent COVID-Timed Medication Flexibilities, and Update Decades-Old Definitions and Standards for Opioid Treatment Programs at a time when fewer than 1 out 10 Americans can access treatment for substance use disorder

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through its Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), is proposing to expand access to treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) at a time when more than 107,000 Americans lost their lives to an overdose last year. The proposal would update the federal regulations that oversee OUD treatment standards as part of HHS’ Overdose Prevention Strategy that supports President Biden’s National Drug Control Strategy – a whole-of-government approach to beat the overdose epidemic. Specifically, the proposed rule change would allow Americans to access the treatment by allowing take home doses

of methadone and the use of telehealth in initiating buprenorphine at opioid treatment programs (OTPs).

In its Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) to update 42 CFR Part 8, SAMHSA is proposing to improve Americans’ access to and experiences with OUD treatment, in particular through OTPs. The proposed changes reflect the widespread desire by many stakeholders for SAMHSA to provide greater autonomy to OTP practitioners, positively support recovery, and continue flexibilities that were extended at the start of the nation’s COVID-19 public health emergency.

“These proposed updates would address longstanding barriers treatment in regulations – most of which have not been revised in more than 20 years,” said Miriam E. Delphin-Rittmon, the HHS Assistant Secretary for Mental Health and Substance Use and the leader of SAMHSA. “I am committed to moving these forward as quickly as possible because we have heard from both providers and patients how urgent the need is for treatment.”

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data, more than 107,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2021, an increase of more than 15 percent from 2020. These updates could help reduce overdose deaths.

medications and who possesses a waiver under 21 U.S.C.823(g)(2).” During the COVID-19 public health emergency, this has been formally expanded to align with broader definitions of a practitioner (nurse practitioners, physician assistants, etc.), and OTPs reported that this change was essential in supporting workflow and access;

Adding evidence-based delivery models of care such as split dosing, telehealth and harm reduction activities;

Removing such outdated terms as “detoxification”;

Updating criteria for provision of takehome doses of methadone;

Strengthening the patient-practitioner relationship through promotion of shared and evidence-based decision-making;

Allowing for early access to takehome doses of methadone for all patients, to promote flexibility in creation of plans of care that facilitate such everyday needs as employment, while also affording people with unstable access to reliable transportation the opportunity to also receive treatment; likewise, promoting mobile medication units to expand an OTP’s geographic reach; and Reviewing OTP accreditation standards.

SAMHSA proposes to update Part 8 by removing stigmatizing or outdated language; supporting a more patient-centered approach; and reducing barriers to receiving care. For example, in March and April 2020, SAMHSA published flexibilities for the provision of take-home doses of methadone and for the use of telehealth in initiating buprenorphine in OTPs. Patients deemed stable by physicians have been able to take home up to 28 days’ worth of methadone doses; other patients – again, so determined by their physicians – received up to a 14-day supply. A recent study showed that patients who received increased take-home doses after federal flexibilities were enacted during COVID-19 saw positive impacts on their recovery, including being more likely to remain in treatment and less likely to use illicit opioids.

These flexibilities represented the first substantial change to OTP treatment standards in more than 20 years. Under the NPRM for Part 8, SAMHSA proposes to make these flexibilities permanent. SAMHSA’s proposed changes also would update standards to reflect an OTP accreditation and treatment environment that has evolved since Part 8 went into effect in 2001. Accordingly, SAMHSA proposes updates that reflect evidence-based practice, language that aligns with current medical terminology, effective patient engagement approaches, and the workforce providing services in OTPs, including:

Expanding the definition of an OTP treatment practitioner to include any provider who is appropriately licensed to dispense and/or prescribe approved medications. The current Part 8 rule defines a practitioner as being: “a physician who is appropriately licensed by the State to dispense covered

To facilitate expansion of access to care, SAMHSA proposes to update OTP admission criteria in Part 8. This includes removal of the one-year requirement for opioid addiction before admission to an OTP, in favor of considering a person’s problematic patterns of opioid use. In conjunction with updated standards that include extended take-home doses of methadone and access to telehealth, these changes are likely to expand access while also improving retention in treatment. The NPRM also proposes to eliminate the requirement that practitioners who have a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for up to 275 patients provide reports to SAMHSA on an annual basis.

The NPRM also promotes the chronic disease model of management, while removing barriers to providing individualized care. “Removing these barriers promotes patient trust and reduces the need for individuals to attend an OTP each day to receive treatment services,” said Assistant Secretary Delphin-Rittmon. “In this way, the proposed changes to Part 8 are focused on the individual and their treatment environment.”

OPERATION HOPE’S 1 MILLION BLACK BUSINESS INITIATIVE HAS SUPPORTED MORE THAN 155,000 BLACK BUSINESSES TO DATE

ATLANTA, PRNewswire -- Operation HOPE, the nation’s leading non-profit dedicated to financial empowerment for underserved communities, announced that its groundbreaking 1 Million Black Business (1MBB) initiative has supported more than 155,000 unique businesses to date through its HOPE Inside network and 1MBB partners. Starting at about 6 months, babies’ iron reserves are low and they need iron from food sources. Iron is essential for brain development and healthy immune systems, as well as overall growth. Heme iron from animal-based foods is absorbed better than non-heme iron found in plant foods, but you can increase the absorption of non-heme iron by offering meals that include a plant source of iron – found in foods like beans, legumes, quinoa, chia seeds, leafy greens, nuts, nut butters and tofu – and a vitamin C-rich food, such as broccoli, strawberries or cantaloupe. Vitamin B12

Important for development of the nervous system, vitamin B12 also plays a role in the prevention of anemia and affects some behavior and mood regulation. What Is RSV?

(StatePoint) While you may want to tone your abs, glutes and triceps in the new year, there’s one often-overlooked area of the body that deserves your attention too: your feet!

“A lot of people hit the gym or dust off their home exercise equipment in January,” says Danielle Butto, DPM, FACFAS, a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon and a Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). “But without proper precautions, a new exercise routine can cause foot and ankle injuries that could sideline you just as you’re hitting your stride.”

According to ACFAS, here’s what to know as you follow through on your resolution to get fit:

Common Injuries

• Don’t play through the pain of an ankle sprain. Avoiding treatment can not only cause further damage to the ligaments which may take much longer to heal or possibly require surgery, but you may be overlooking a more serious injury -- a stress fracture.

• A stress fracture may feel like an ankle sprain at first, but you’ll notice additional warning signs, such as swelling without bruising, and pain even during normal activities or when touching the area. If you have any of these symptoms, have your foot and ankle evaluated by a foot and ankle surgeon as soon as possible.

• Pain or swelling around your Achilles tendon after a workout could be indications of Achilles tendonitis. Untreated, a stretched or strained Achilles tendon may worsen over time, leading to stiffness and fatigue in your injured leg. Worse yet, untreated Achilles tendonitis could result in a ruptured tendon requiring surgery and a rehabilitation of several months.

• Heel pain that lasts for more than a day or two, or worsens when you stand after sitting for an extended amount of time, may be plantar fasciitis. This common condition is a result of inflammation of the tissue extending from your heel to your toes. If caught early, your foot and ankle surgeon can recommend athome conditioning. In late stages, plantar fasciitis is harder to treat and takes longer to resolve.

Prevention Tips

The good news? Many injuries are preventable. Foot and ankle surgeons offer five tips to help you keep your feet and ankles healthy:

1. Be smart. Consider consulting a personal trainer at first to ensure you’re

practicing good form, and to increase the duration and intensity of your workouts gradually and safely.

2. Stretch. Incorporate mobility and stretching into your fitness regimen, particularly before and after workouts.

3. Be footwear aware. Wear properly-fitting athletic shoes that support the arch of the foot, provide heel cushioning and are designed for the exercise in which you’re engaged. These measures can help you avoid plantar fasciitis and neuromas. Wear cotton or nonslip socks to help prevent painful blisters, which can become infected and cause more serious issues, especially if you have diabetes.

4. Guard against bacteria. Sweaty shoes, public showers, exercise equipment and the pool deck are breeding grounds for fungus, viruses and bacteria. Wear water shoes in public areas, and after workouts, and get your feet clean and dry quickly.

5. Book an appointment. Foot and ankle pain isn’t normal. It signals a problem that needs to be evaluated, diagnosed and treated by a specialist who fully understands this part of the body. To find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, use the “Find a Physician” search tool at FootHealthFacts.org.

“When you exercise, your feet and ankles do a ton of work holding you up and absorbing the shock of each step you take,” says Dr. Butto. “So, as you kick off your new fitness routine, don’t forget to protect them.”

Another boost in the fight against hunger
