Chicago Fringe Festival 2013

Welcome to the 2013 CHICAGO FRINGE FESTIVAL Just after the 2012 Chicago Fringe Festival closed, an idea starting floating: We wanted more. More for our staff. More for our artists. More for our patrons. That desire kicked off my long winter of searching high and low for a new home for Chicago Fringe. People have asked me if organizing CFF 2013 felt like starting from scratch. In some ways it has, but in most ways—thankfully—it has not. You know those coming-of-age movies where the protagonist goes off on a quest? We all remember how it goes: She meets challenges along the way, fights the big fights and triumphs with skills she never knew she had. It was something like that ending up in Jefferson Park. After months of holding meetings, asking lots of questions, and peering through storefront windows, the prospect of moving still seemed intimidating. But we took the leap of faith, and it felt like the right thing to do. Where we once feared to tread, we now felt like old pros. We had the artistic content and organizational experience to move forward confidently, and Jefferson Park would help us upgrade to version 2.0: better transit, better venues, better events, better marketing and outreach—essentially a better overall Fringe experience. Most importantly, we have received an outpouring of enthusiasm from this community. From government to business to the arts, Jefferson Park has asked, “How can we help make Chicago Fringe successful?” And for that, we are grateful. We hope this comes to embody a new period of stability and growth for us, as we continue our mission of offering accessible and affordable theatre while empowering small artists. A quick word on our theme this year, “Pack a Lunch.” It’s a lighthearted way of saying: we hope you’ll spend some time with us. Like peanut butter and jelly, chicken and waffles, green eggs and ham, Chicago Fringe and Jefferson Park make a great combo. Take your seat, inhale the sweet aroma of 50 shows, and feast on Fringe. About the cover The 2013 winning design is by artist Alex Kostiw. Kostiw, originally from New York and now living in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago, is a freelance designer in editorial, book, poster/ad and web illustration. She also designs for print and apparel. Kostiw described her inspiration for creating the winning design; “The [Fringe Festival’s] ‘Pack a lunch’ theme wound up evoking this design for me. The Fringe Festival strikes me as nourishing, both for audiences and performers. I originally thought of a salad growing out of this guy’s neck, but the explosive flavor of oranges and their bright color and abundance seemed more fun— Fringe-like.”

a note from alderman john arena As Alderman of the 45th ward of Chicago I'd like to welcome both Chicago Fringe Festival and you, the audience and supporters, to our creative community. The talent, energy and commitment that Chicago Fringe Festival brings to Jefferson Park promises surprises, laughs and probably a few tears. The willingness of these actors to explore their craft without the psychological net provided by a familiar crowd in a familiar space deserves our encouragement. Thank you for coming to Jefferson Park and supporting them with your enthusiasm and applause, While in the neighborhood please enjoy the hospitality of our local sponsors and hosts, and let them know you are here for the Chicago Fringe Festival. Warm regards, John Arena, Alderman, 45th Ward
