CHICAGO FRINGE FESTIVAL 2014

WELCOME TO THE 2014 CHICAGO FRINGE FESTIVAL “With a bittersweet emotion, I take the wheel for the last time.”* -Vincent Lacey Year 5 of the Chicago Fringe Festival. This milestone is truly incredible. Through sheer grit and perseverance we have carved out a niche in the Chicago performing arts scene. Even from year one, Fringe has set an ambitious goal: 50 shows, 200 performances. Only our dedicated team of volunteers could make the impossible possible. Our messaging this year is a succinct way of saying what we aim to bring you: “Weirder. Theatre.” Performances that push boundaries, bring you new flavors and experiences, and—at their best—just may change the way you think. We invite you to embrace the weird in this intimate, walkable, and pop-up community. Speaking of community, this year we have an expanded Fringe Central. Your contributions to our Kickstarter campaign made this possible! I call Fringe Central a magical spot—common at Fringe Festivals around the world—because when artists and patrons get together to hang out, beautiful things happen. Join us for a drink, a casual performance, and a really good time. More details in this program and announced throughout the Fest. This will be my last term as Executive Director and I have shared so many moments of sweet madness. Through it all, I was blessed with a great team. I could fill this program with stories, but for now I just say: THANK YOU. When you sign on to produce something like a Fringe, you never know how far the idea will take you or how long you can see out the project. That’s the nature of the art world. I am thrilled that this legacy will live beyond my era in Chicago, and I hope it does so for a long, long time. Nothing but Fringe Love, Vincent Lacey Executive Director *What’s Fringier than quoting a line I never actually said? Taking the intern to a tattoo parlor for a Fringe tattoo. Which is what I just did. CHICAGOFRINGE.ORG

CHICAGO FRINGE FESTIVAL 2014

ABOUT CFF

A LETTER FROM OUR BOARD PRESIDENT I was tired, smelly, and in need of a cocktail. It was August 2011, and I had been moving from Pittsburgh to Chicago for three days. A friend of mine called me up and invited me to see an acrobat show in Pilsen. Unsure of both my friend’s sanity, and whether or not I could actually stand long enough to get there, I said yes. I found my friend. We made our way toward a buzzing storefront. The bench on which I sat was uncomfortable, but I hardly noticed for the people and chatter. Light bulbs of various shapes and sizes were strewn across the ceiling. They dimmed and out came three healthy-looking people in acrobat uniforms. They began their act and I lost myself. Over the next couple of days, I explored more of this “Fringe Festival.” I randomly went to shows based on title alone. I met new people and drank beer at Fringe Central. And I continually got loved on by the fantastic volunteer staff. I had no choice but to join up with this magical band of weird theatre…ers. Cut to this year’s Festival: Jeff Park continues to be a welcoming and wonderful home, the Festival will produce more shows than ever before, and we still give 100% of the ticket revenues to the performers (to date, that’s about $120,000). We believe that Chicago deserves a theatre festival with artists from all over the world who might not otherwise have a chance to share their talents and stories. If you agree, we need your help. I invite you to join our weird theatre community and make a donation today by using the donation form on the next page. Whether this is your first Fringe or you’re someone who has bought unlimited ticket packs for each Festival, I encourage you to lose yourself. On behalf of the entire Board, I welcome you. We’re glad you’re here. And now that you are, go explore, mingle, ask questions, say hello, dance, eat, get lost, find a penny. Just be weird. We’ll be weird right along with you. Spreading sugar all around, Justin Fyala Board President CHICAGOFRINGE.ORG

SHOW DESCRIPTIONS AN EVENING WITH

Paper Stage, Chicago, Illinois This is the show I’m trying to pass off as Art/Comedy, but really it’s just my way of dealing with a terrible break-up and all of the self-destructive decisions I’ve made in the past two years, maybe three. Ages: Young adults, Adults

OUR FAIR CITY LIVE

HartLife, NFP Chicago, Illinois Our Fair City Live is a classic Noir radiodrama featuring music and live sound effects. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where the HartLife insurance corporation manages every aspect of life, this show skewers corporate values with subversive glee. You’ll tingle with anticipation, seethe with outrage...and laugh to keep from crying. Ages: Teenagers+

RE-ENTRY, A PLAY

Nicole Kearney Productions Indianapolis, IN George Jackson is an ex-offender who is attempting to re-store his family ties, re-build a new life and re-engage in society after spending almost half his life in and out of correctional institutions. George is representative of the ex-offender in re-entry. Those who the legal system fear with their return to society will raise crime rates (again), just as their incarceration helped bring it down. Ex-offenders are subjected to extensive post-release supervision. Generally, the preparation given to them pre-release is inadequate, hindering their ability to smoothly re-integrate back into society. It is mostly true that in re-entry, people are waiting for the ex-offender to fail. Ages: Teen+ Content: D
