r NEWS OF THE WEEK

In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe. International Jazz Day is chaired and led by Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General, and legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who serves as a UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and Chairman of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. The Institute is the lead nonprofit organization charged with planning, promoting and producing this annual celebration, which began in 2012. International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact; raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual

understanding; and reinforce international cooperation and communication. Each year on April 30, this international art form is recognized for promoting peace, dialogue among cultures, diversity, and respect for human rights and human dignity, eradicating discrimination, promoting freedom of expression, fostering gender equality, and reinforcing the role of youth for social change. UNESCO and United Nations missions, U.S. embassies and government outposts around the world hosted special events for the first annual International Jazz Day on April 30, 2012 to honor this revered musical art form. Universities, libraries, schools, community centers, performing arts venues and arts organizations of all disciplines around the world marked the day through concerts, education programs, seminars, lectures, book readings, public jam sessions, master classes, photo exhibitions, dance recitals, film and documentary

r NEWS OF THE WEEK

“One must approach the hip experience with a lifetime of preparation” writes Ben Sidran in the liner notes to Don’t Cry For No Hipster. If ever there was an example of an artist who lives the song he sings, Sidran is that example, and he has indeed approached his latest recording with a lifetime of preparation. Hipster is his 35th solo record, and on this one, he delivers twelve new original songs.

Ben Sidran new release “don’t cry for no hipster”

available everywhere April 9 shows in nyc, Chicago, california

Upcoming Live Dates 4/11: Mill Valley @ Sweetwater 4/12: Sonoma, CA 4/14: San Francisco, CA 4/16: New York, NY 4/20: Chicago, IL 4/24: New York, NY CD Release at Jazz Standard

The contemporary concept of the Hipster, the counter-cultural, progressive pickler, self-styled “cat on the corner wearing the hat so small it makes his head look big” (as Sidran says), is largely associated with Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Sidran, who identifies himself with an earlier wave of Hipsters – those associated with bebop, philosophy and good smoke – decided to visit the epicenter of the current zeitgeist for the recording. He and his son, Leo, who played drums and produced the project, assembled a cadre of Brooklyn characters to record at The Bunker Studio in Williamsburg. The musicians, Tim Luntzel, Will Bernard, John Ellis, Orlando le Fleming, Mark Shim, and Moses Patrou, came to the music with a fresh enthusiasm and a classic sense of deep groove. r NEWS OF THE WEEK

Whether your source is the Bible or the Byrds, the notion is the same: “To everything there is a season.” On his debut as a leader, Songs From This Season, alto saxophonist and composer Tim Green recounts the many seasons of his own life on a stylistically diverse set featuring a host of established and rising jazz stars. Released via Green’s own True Melody Music label, Songs From This Season surveys a broad swath of the jazz landscape, from deftly swinging hard bop to fluid modernity to soulful gospel. The impressive list of sidemen on the session includes pianist Orrin Evans, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, guitarist Gilad Hekselman, drummers Rodney Green and Obed Calvaire, and several of Green’s collaborators in the thriving Baltimore/ Washington D.C. jazz scene. The disc marks not only the emergence of a strong new voice on the saxophone, already established by Green’s secondplace showing in the 2008 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition, but of a confident and versatile composer. Each piece on the album, Green says, reflects a certain period in his life and the emotion attached to it.

Green has recently come under the wing of one of his idols, saxophonist Kenny Garrett. While on the phone with mentor Mulgrew Miller one day, Green was shocked when the pianist handed the phone over to Garrett out of the blue. “I was really blown away because he’s a big hero of mine,” Green recalls. “Since then he’s been really supportive and just lets me know he’s on my side. He wants me to go all the way, and that’s really encouraging to me.”

More recently, Green has also gotten bandstand endorsements with several heavy hitters who have called upon him as a sideman. The list includes Miller, but also bassist Christian McBride, pianist Eric Reed, and the Carl Allen/Rodney Whitaker group.

Three of Chicago’s premiere vocalists pay tribute to the genius of Ella Fitzgerald. Howard Reich of the Chicago Tribune says “jazz singing is a profoundly sensual art, at least when Dee Alexander, Frieda Lee and Spider Saloff are standing before the microphones.” And Chicagoist writes, “Separately, each of these ladies has her own distinct voice, but together, they embody the heart-turning passion of the First Lady of Song, from her sensual, breathy tones to her pure, rich highs.”

JACK MOUSE RANGE OF MOTION

After decades of performing with some of the greatest names in jazz, drummer Jack Mouse finally gathered together a quintet of some of his longtime Chicago collaborators to put together this intriguing set of ten original compositions. With Art Davis on trumpet, Scott Robinson on woodwinds, guitarist John McLean, and two titan bassists splitting duties, Bob Bowman and Kelly Sill, Mouse’s well-seasoned group aesthetic receives a long overdue recording debut. Drummer Jack Mouse’s extensive background began when, upon graduating from college, he spent three years as featured soloist with the “Falconaires,” the official jazz ensemble of the U.S. Air Force Academy. He has since performed with such outstanding jazz artists as Stan Kenton, Clark Terry, Herb Ellis, Joe Williams, Carl Fontana, James Moody, Randy Brecker, Billy Taylor, Stefan Karlsson, Steve Erquiaga, Frank Wess, Kai Winding, Kenny Burrell, Bill Evans, Jon Faddis, Bob Mintzer, Red Norvo, Sammy Nestico, Marc Johnson, Scott Robinson, Chuck Israels, James Williams, Gary Bartz, Bobby Watson, Matt Harris, Steve Rodby, Dianne Reeves, Sheila Jordan, Janice Borla, Jay Clayton, Karrin Allyson, Judy Niemack, Roseanna Vitro, Kitty Margolis, Madeline Eastman, Judi Silvano, Suzanne Pittson, Cathy Segal-Garcia, Joshua Breakstone, and many more. As a member of the Janice Borla Group, Jack can be heard on Janice’s CDs Whatever We Imagine (P-Vine Records, Japan), Lunar Octave (DMP), Agents of Change (Blujazz) and her latest, From Every Angle (Blujazz), which DownBeat gave 4 stars and named as one of the “Best CDs of the Year.” Also a member of the Dan Haerle Trio, he is heard on The Truth of the Matter (Seagull Records), Standard Procedure (Blujazz) -included in DownBeat’s “Best CDs of 2005” -- and their current release Aspiration (Seagull Records). Jack’s multi-faceted career has been the subject of recent interviews in Modern Drummer and Jazz Improv magazines. He has authored articles for Percussive Notes and the IAJE-Illinois Newsletter. In 2005 he was a featured artist during the first online Virtual Percussion Festival presented at the University of Manitoba by the ALIVE Project (Accessible Live Internet Video Education). Currently Coordinator of Jazz Studies at North Central College, Jack has also served on the faculties of the American Conservatory of Music, Benedictine University, Saskatchewan School of the Arts, Clark Terry Great Plains Jazz Camp, National Stage Band Camps, Jamey Aebersold Combo-Improvisation Camps and Birch Creek Farm Academy for the Performing Arts. He has been a faculty artist member of the Janice Borla Vocal Jazz Camp since its founding in 1989.

KEN HATFIELD SEXTET: FOR LANGSTON

A supremely lyrical guitarist and award-winning composer with a deep love of literature, Ken Hatfield is always on the lookout for texts ripe for musical interpretation. He found an ideal muse in the great American poet Langston Hughes, whose rhythmically agile verse, marked by penetrating observations about love, life and politics, takes flight on For Langston, due out on Arthur Circle Music on February 1, 2013, Langston’s birthday. A chamber jazz work featuring a stellar cast of improvisers and the startlingly beautiful voice of Hilary Gardner, the album is a remarkable, deeply soulful achievement by a veteran jazz master whose name should be far better known. “The first thing I was looking for was someone who could sing in that register credibly as a jazz singer,” Hatfield says. “I needed a singer who could sing in soprano range, but not sound operatic. The first rehearsal I had with her, she knocked it out of the park.” For Langston encompasses many facets of Hatfield’s far-flung musical resume, though he initially connected with Hughes’ verse on a visceral level. He was particularly drawn to the way the poet’s phrasing and unsentimental sensibility can evoke the blues, both as a musical form and as an essential expression of African-American culture. Rather than trying to encompass the poet’s entire oeuvre, he carefully selected works that spoke to him musically. “As I’m reading them I’m hearing grooves and melodies and even chord changes,” Hatfield says. Navigating Hatfield’s music isn’t for the faint of heart. He called on his frequent collaborator Jamie Baum, a brilliant player whose husky alto flute often parallels Gardner’s soaring vocals. Percussionist Steve Kroon and drummer Jeff Hirshfield are both dynamically sensitive musicians who can swing with authority or play texturally as an arrangement requires. In many ways, the ensemble keys on the melodically inspired, rhythmically fluid bass of Hans Glawischnig, the Austrian-born master best known for his work with David Sanchez, Miguel Zenón and Bobby Watson. Structured as a song cycle complete with a stirring overture, the album flows together gracefully, despite drawing on numerous rhythms and forms. Hatfield’s musical concept keyed on assembling a consistent ensemble for the entire project, one capable of improvising with gusto while exploring delicately hued passages in support of Hughes’ verse and Hatfield’s gorgeously calibrated nylon-string guitar work. Exploring Hughes’ verse in a jazz setting seems so obvious it’s a wonder that so few composers have walked this path (though trumpeter Ron McCurdy revived the ambitious, unperformed jazz suite that Hughes wrote inspired by the civil rights struggle, Ask Your Mama). Hatfield’s nylon string caress and vivid rhythmic palette provide him with the ideal tools for unleashing the musicality inherent in the jazzy verse of Langston Hughes. While For Langston is rife with innovation, the album feels like a homecoming for a jazz poetry patriarch eager to return the music’s warm embrace.

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well. Photography by BRYAN THOMPSON

pat martino Pat Martino emerged from the jazz-rich Philadelphia music scene in 1961 and established himself over the subsequent fifty years as one of the most important and prolific jazz guitarists of all time. His work with legends like Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, Richard Groove Holmes, Chick Corea, Jack McDuff, and so many more link him to the very fabric of jazz history. He has recorded for every major record label, performed on every major jazz festival stage, and been nominated for the very top echelon of awards and readers polls and has been a MAJOR influence to at least two generations of guitarists. So as he entered his 50th year in the music profession, it became evident that these golden years should be spent touring with a guitar befitting a jazz legend – designed and built by Bob Benedetto.

FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

cBiggest Obstacles you have faced in your musical career?

Making a living in the music industry. Also, it is a challenge to balance the work of a busy performance schedule with doing the work of getting the work, along with promotion, marketing and trying to constantly grow as an artist and teacher. I am also trying to motivate myself to practice the piano regularly.

cGreatest Achievements in Music to this point?

Making a living in the music industry and hopefully inspiring my students. Also, I am happy that I feel I am constantly striving to continually learn and grow as a jazz artist. It is a never-ending endeavor, which is both daunting and inspiring to me.

cWho has inspired you over the years to continue with your musical career?

I have never really had a mentor (I wish I’d had one, I make lots of mistakes early on). I am very self-motivated; I try to continually find ways to inspire myself. I am regularly inspired by my colleagues and students as well, and just listening to a great jazz musician inspires me, whether it is a singer or instrumentalist.

cFavorite CD you are listening to right now?

I am obsessed with “Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Duke Ellington Songbook.” I listen to it ad nauseum. The arrangements are killer and the overall musicianship is incredible. I am about to perform a Strayhorn/Ellington concert, so I am also listening to “And His Mother Called Him Bill,” a tribute record that Ellington and the orchestra recorded after Strayhorn’s death.

cWhat are your future musical goals?

They are not very lofty, I don’t think. I want to continue to make a decent living performing and teaching, and I’d love to record another CD. I think I have grown a great deal since my last recording. I’d like to continue singing and teaching until my last dying breath.

cFavorite cuisine to cook at home?

When I do cook, which isn’t often, I use the crock pot a lot. I also make simple fish dishes, soups, and salads. I wouldn’t exactly call it cooking. It’s more like “assembling.”

cBeverage of choice?

Wine, Belgian and wheat beers in the summer and single-malt scotch and bourbon in the winter. I love a good Manhattan.

cLast book you’ve read?

I am re-reading the definitive Strayhorn biography, Lush Life, by David Hadju. When I am not reading, I actually feel a little lost and empty and I love historical fiction mostly.

cLast concert you have attended?

Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, a theater piece about Billy Holiday.

cFavorite TV Show?

. I love the shows, “The American Experience, Nova, Frontline and Independent Lens.” I also like to rent DVDs of episodic television shows, like “Breaking Bad, Dexter, and Downton Abby” and then watch them “marathon style” into the wee hours.

cFavorite place in Chicago to hang out?

I don’t “hang out” much anywhere. Since I am working in bars, restaurants and clubs, I want to be at home when I am not working. I am a homebody and prefer to “hang out” in my pajamas on the couch, frankly. Although, I used to like the old Pops for Champagne on Sheffield. It was close to my apartment. I could walk over and be around like-minded folks and I loved the staff.

getting to know

ELAINE DAME

I started taking piano lessons at an early age (6 years old) and began playing the flute in the 4th grade. My mom said I sang before I talked, so I guess singing has always been a passion. I took piano, voice and flute lessons all through high school and went to college on a classical voice and flute scholarship, majoring in theater. My parents also listened to music all the time (my mom listened to classical music and my dad was into the blues and R & B). About fifteen years ago, I started listening to jazz and was immediately drawn to the genre. I decided to shift my focus from theater to jazz singing and was greatly inspired by a book called, “The Artists Way.”

“Frank D’Rone is one of the few finer singers and

Frank was headlining the world famous “Copacabana” when Tony Bennett took over the microphone on opening night and told the audience, “A few years back, Nat “King” Cole said that Frank D’Rone was the finest singer around. Jim Sellers is a Chicago based jazz pianist, having

been lucky enough to have performed with some great musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Frank Catalano, Spider Saloff, Luba Mason, Ava Logan, Art Davis, Bill Yancey and many others. Jim’s interest in jazz began in grade school when he discovered Daddio Daley’s radio program on what was then WXFM. With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music – having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

LINDY ENDRES

Hw

For Lindy

CMF

Endres, music played a bit of a different

role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

Shawn Maxwell has the urge—a quality

fundamental to those who create improvised music on a nightly basis. In this way, it is not enough to simply create, but the need to innovate guides each note. His art lies in addressing the ordinary modalities of life in an extraordinary way, placing notes in their most complimentary places with precision and enthusiasm. Each harmony he creates is purposeful in form as well as function. After starting his professional career touring Internationally, across the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, Maxwell returned home to conquer the Windy City. With equal parts genius and toil, Maxwell has become one the preeminent performers in the Chicago jazz landscape. His multi-instrumental talents have been lauded by fellow musicians and critics alike.

THE HARRIS GROUP

Hw

CMF

The Harris Group delivers an approach

to progressive jazz that focuses on more than improvisation. Influenced by Joe Beck and Steps Ahead, The Harris Group offers jazz that will no doubt stand the test of time. Although it is the basis of their repertoire, The Harris Group knows the audience for their music is broad, not defined by jazz alone. The Harris Group knows how to please an audience that is looking for meat and blood rather than fleeting hits.
