r NEWS OF THE WEEK

les paul exhibit “the wizard of waukesha” opens june 9 The city of Waukesha, Wisconsin has some big bragging rights regarding the history of music: it is the birthplace of the legendary Les Paul, the highly influential musician, entertainer and inventor. To commemorate the upcoming June 9th opening of Les Paul: The Wizard of Waukesha exhibit at the Waukesha County Museum, the museum produced a music video featuring fellow Waukesha native Sam Llanas, along with images of Les and his guitars, and the hometown they proudly share. In the video, Sam strums Les Paul’s first professional Gibson L-5 guitar that Les bought at the Gibson factory in 1933. The museum recently acquired this priceless guitar and will showcase it - along with many other guitars and rare personal artifacts - in the new exhibit. Parts of the video were filmed in Waukesha’s famed Club 400, a tavern once owned by Les’ family and the location of Les and Mary Ford’s first live performance. Other locations featured in the video include Cutler Park, downtown Main Street, and Les Paul’s burial site at Prairie Home Cemetery. A private VIP opening will be held on Saturday, June, 8, 2013. For more information or to order tickets, please call (262) 521-2859 or visit www.lespaulexperience. org or www.waukeshacountymuseum.org.

chicago opera theater 2014 Season includes duke ellington Chicago Opera Theater (COT) General Director Andreas Mitisek has announced programming for COT’s 2014 season, including two operas and a double-bill of one-acts. Mitisek comments, “It’s a season that is 100% 20th century and 150% COT. New, rare and with contemporary relevance for a curious audience that is hungry for new theatrical experiences.” The season opens with the Chicago Premiere of Duke Ellington’s Queenie Pie, February 15 – 23, 2014. In the spring, COT presents a double-bill of Carl Orff’s Die Kluge and Viktor Ullmann’s Der Kaiser von Atlantis, May 31 – June 8, 2014. The season wraps in the fall with the Chicago Premiere of Ernest Bloch’s Macbeth, September 13 – 21, 2014. Duke Ellington’s only opera and one of his fairly unknown and rarely performed works, Queenie Pie, blends big band sound and clever lyrics with the musical styles of opera, jazz and musical theater. The title character, Queenie Pie, was inspired by the life of Madam C. J. Walker, the first African American self-made woman millionaire, who developed and sold a line of hair and beauty products through innovative mail orders and door-to-door sales. Individual tickets go on sale January 6, 2014. Subscriptions and tickets may be purchased through Chicago Opera Theater at www.chicagooperatheater.org or by phone at 312-704-8414.

natalie cole “en espanol” to be released june 25 Multiple GRAMMY Award-winner Natalie Cole’s first Spanish-language album, “Natalie Cole en Español” will be released June 25 on Verve/Universal. The album finds Natalie personally inspired by both the bilingual recording legacy of her father Nat King Cole, and a growing passion for the timeless romanticism of the great Latin music composers. Produced by Rudy Pérez (“Latin Music Producer Of The Decade” – Billboard), “Natalie Cole en Español” will reintroduce a new generation of fans to many of Latin Music’s most romantic standards – with both new interpretations of Spanishlanguage classics previously recorded by Nat King Cole, and Natalie’s own personal selections of songs that have touched her heart and make this album truly her own. This wonderful balance of both old and new classics is perfectly illustrated by the special vocal collaborations that highlight the album, with Natalie joining Juan Luis Guerra on the Dominican Maestro’s own “Bachata Rosa,” while looking further back with Andrea Bocelli on the eternal “Bésame Mucho.” But without question, the most emotional pairing of the album finds Natalie joining her father in a heartfelt duet of “Acércate Más” (Come Closer to Me) - utilizing the same technique as their Grammy winning, globally multiplatinum recording of “Unforgettable.” For more information, please visit www.nataliecole.com.

new release of the week PAT METHENY TAP/JOHN ZORN’S BOOK OF ANGELS VOL.20

NONESUCH RECORDS

TZADIK RECORDS

Pat Metheny adds his contribution to John Zorn’s ambitiously expansive Masada Book Two with Tap: The Book of Angels, Volume 20. This album is the first collaboration between the two artists, considered among their generation’s most innovative musicians. Besides his frequent collaborator, drummer Antonio Sanchez, Metheny plays all other instruments—guitars, sitar, tiples, bass, keyboards, orchestrionics, electronics, bandoneón, percussion, flugelhorn, and more—himself. Beginning in the 1990s, Zorn wrote 500 songs inspired by traditional Jewish music; they came to be known as two volumes of the Masada Book. He performed the first 200 songs of Book One with the rotating members of the Masada ensemble for a decade before writing Book Two’s 300 tunes in just three months. Over the past eight years, the songs from Book Two have been recorded as volumes of The Book of Angels by a stellar group of musicians, including the Masada Quintet, Masada String Trio, Medeski Martin & Wood, and Marc Ribot. Zorn says of Metheny’s recording, “Pat is of course a living legend—one of those rare lights in the universe. His incredible facility and dedication, indefatigable energy and focus, imagination, and never-ending curiosity have distinguished him as truly one of the greatest musicians on the planet.” He continues, “Tap is a showcase for Pat’s remarkable imagination, technique, passion, and love for the world. No matter how many times I listen to this recording I am hit with that same sense of exhilaration that hit me the very first time.” Metheny, who recently won his 20th Grammy Award, adds, “I have admired John Zorn since the late ’70s and have followed his amazing output every step of the way. A few years ago, after contacting me to write some notes for one of his Arcana publications, John and I began an inspired e-mail connection. (As hard as it is to believe, we had never met in person over the years.) I mentioned that I had followed his Book of Angels series from the start and felt like I might be able to contribute something unique to the collection. With his enthusiastic encouragement, he gave me some suggestions as to which tunes were still unrecorded, and I picked the ones that jumped out and spoke to me. Over the next year, in between breaks from the road, I recorded them one by one in my home studio whenever I got a chance.”

CK DEJOHNETTE Now in its 30th year, the Keith Jarrett Trio is widely considered, as the NY Times recently remarked, to have set “the gold standard” for jazz groups, and this sparkling concert recording from 2009 is issued to mark a milestone anniversary. The “Somewhere” in which the ‘Standards’ trio find themselves is Lucerne, Switzerland with a performance both exploratory and in-thetradition. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung headlined its review of the show “Kontrollierte Ekstase” – controlled ecstasy – an apt metaphor for a set that begins in improvisational “Deep Space” modulates into Miles Davis’ “Solar”, soars through the standards “Stars Fell On Alabama” and “Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea” and climaxes with an extended romp through “West Side Story”, as Bernstein’s “Somewhere” and “Tonight” are bridged by the freely associative Jarrett original “Everywhere.”

Jazz Jam Sessions

Chicago A jam session is a musical event, process, or activity where musicians play (i.e. “jam) by improvising without extensive preparation or predefined arrangements. Jam sessions are often used by musicians to develop new material, find suitable arrangements, or simply as a social gathering and communal practice session. Jam sessions may be based upon existing songs or forms, may be loosely based on an agreed chord progression or chart suggested by one participant, or may be wholly improvisational. Jam sessions can range from very loose gatherings of amateurs to sophisticated improvised recording sessions intended to be edited and released to the public. Here are a selection of a weekly Jazz Jam Sessions in Chicago and in the area to check out.

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. That’s why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well. Photography by BRYAN THOMPSON

The Chicago Jazz Festival has long been celebrated as the first of the lakefront music festivals, and as it marks its 35th year, the event will move to Millennium Park from festival grounds in Grant Park, August 29-September 1. Performances will also happen in the Chicago Cultural Center. (78 E. Washington) The festival is presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. (DCASE) and programmed in partnership with the Jazz Institute of Chicago. The first evening of the Chicago Jazz Festival, Thursday, August 29, will once again coincide with the final evening of Made in Chicago: World Class Jazz. Then on Friday, three stages will come alive with entertainment in Millennium Park (including the north and south ends of the Chase Promenade) as the festival begins that day at 2 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday hours will also be extended from previous years, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and an additional stage will feature live performances, resulting in the festival providing the most hours of free jazz music than it has in recent years. As is the tradition of the festival, the 2013 Artist in Residence is Chicago drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake.

Drake moved to the Chicago area in the early sixties, living on the same street as Fred Anderson who would mentor the pre-teen drummer. By the early seventies, Drake joined Anderson’s band, playing with him on stage at the inaugural Chicago Jazz Festival in 1979. His Artist Residency affords Chicagoans the rare opportunity to hear him in several contexts over the course of one weekend, and his appearance at the Chicago Jazz Festival – 34 years after he first played this event – encompasses the festival’s entire history.

GERALD CLAYTO

“Individually and collectively, (the Gerald Clayton Trio’s) performance was at a stunningly high professi feeling of exhilaration in everything they played.” -Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times Over the course of eight years, with three albums as a leader, several studio projects as a sideman, and countless worldwide performances, pianist and composer Gerald Clayton has established himself as a leading figure in the up-and-coming generation of jazz artists who are fluent in the range of styles that make up today´s jazz lexicon. Hailed by The New York Times for his “huge, authoritative presence,” Clayton is well on his way toward etching his own enduring mark in the long and rich tradition of jazz. Never has this been more apparent than in Life Forum, his latest recording on Concord Jazz and his most ambitious project to date. Life Forum, set for release in April 2013, “might be the most ambitious album yet,” states Clayton. “Conceptualizing the music for a group of eight musicians was a new experience for me, and it required more preparation than I was accustomed to. With the addition of lyrics to three of the tunes, as well as some other post-production work, this project has been a departure from my previous two. I´m doing more writing now than I´ve ever done before, and working with Ben Wendel, who produced the record, was very helpful.

I really admire his playing and his writing. He and I got together prior to the sessions to talk about the music and map out what I needed to do to get it recorded. In that sense, it was more demanding than the previous records.” “What comes after Life Forum is anyone´s guess,” says Clayton, who does not want to be defined by any one musical tradition: “I prefer to ignore the boxes, the genre distinctions,” he says. “I focus on creating honest musical expressions and collaborating with people whose ideas resonate with my own.”

FitzGerald’s has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900’s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950’s and early 60’s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

San Francisco’s Fillmore District of the 1960s is known worldwide as the birthplace of psychedelic rock. But it was also a hotbed of modern electric blues, and it was the place where one of the genre’s top musical trailblazers, Joe Louis Walker, was born, raised and schooled. The award-winning guitar slinger, deeply soulful vocalist and gifted songwriter has been releasing groundbreaking music since 1986, but his career goes all the way back to the mid-1960s. As a 16-yearold, he was the house guitarist at San Francisco’s famed musical playground, The Matrix, where he played with or opened shows for everyone from Lightnin’ Hopkins (who once threw him off the stage) to Jimi Hendrix to Thelonious Monk. These ear-opening surroundings explain the ease with which Walker blends blues, rock, gospel, jazz and country, making it seem as if the walls between the styles never existed in the first place. The New York Times raves, “Walker is a singer with a Cadillac of a voice. He delivers no-nonsense, gutsy blues. His guitar solos are fast, wiry and incisive, moaning with bluesy despair.” According to Living Blues, he is “one of today’s modern musical masters.” Rolling Stone simply calls him “ferocious.”

Six and a half feet of raw emotion and sweat, with one leather boot planted in gutsy R&B, the other in taut minimalist grind. Snarling at the crowd beneath an afro pompadour, while indulging in a sly wink, singing to you directly, and here to make you dance. What does post-punk soul look like? It looks like JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound. The Uptown Sound has attracted a true-blue grassroots following, with MOJO Magazine identifying them as “one of the hottest US soul acts”. Since unleashing their Bloodshot Records debut “Want More” (“A lively set of gritty old-school soul and funk injected with raw garage-rock aggression” - KEXP), they’ve barnstormed North America and Europe relentlessly, while burning up NPR and AAA radio with their stomping cover of Wilco’s “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart” (which they performed with the song’s composer, Jeff Tweedy, at Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival).

The Smooth Jazz Cruise welcomes George Benson and Boney James, two of the most influential contemporary jazz musicians of the decade, to The Chicago Theatre on Friday, June 21, in an encore of 2012’s sell out performance. At various points along the four-decade continuum of George Benson’s career, he has been heralded as a jazz guitarist of unparalleled chops, a vocalist with great emotional range and sophistication or a combination of both. “It’s a very simple equation,” the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Master says of the longevity of his career and the ten Grammy Awards that have punctuated it along the way. “In the end, it’s about the songs and the stories. That’s what keeps the music fresh for me.” Boney James has four Gold albums, three Grammy nominations, a Soul Train Award and an NAACP Award nomination to his credit. He is currently touring to support his brand new hit cd The Beat. In 2010 Billboard Magazine named him “The No. 3 Top Contemporary Jazz Artist of the Decade.” Even so, James says, “I am just a saxophone player whose music has several different influences. Jazz is only one of them.”

FRANK D’RONE

Hw

CMF

“Frank D’Rone is one of the few finer singers and

performers around and creates great vibes with his audiences.” This quote, from Leonard Feather, one of the world’s foremost music critics, probably best describes Frank and his talents today. It takes a while to achieve words of this sort. Frank’s nique and rare gift has taken him before the spotlights of virtually every major nightclub in the United States. Frank was headlining the world famous “Copacabana” when Tony Bennett took over the microphone on opening night and told the audience, “A few years back, Nat “King” Cole said that Frank D’Rone was the finest singer around. Tonight he has proved that Nat was right!”

With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music – having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. He went on to earn a Master of Music degree from DePaul University in Chicago.

LINDY ENDRES

Hw

For Lindy

CMF

Endres, music played a bit of a different

role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the ‘dancer’, never the ‘singer’. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindy’s flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

THE HARRIS GROUP

CMF

The Harris Group delivers an approach

to progressive jazz that focuses on more than improvisation. Influenced by Joe Beck and Steps Ahead, The Harris Group offers jazz that will no doubt stand the test of time. Although it is the basis of their repertoire, The Harris Group knows the audience for their music is broad, not defined by jazz alone. The Harris Group knows how to please an audience that is looking for meat and blood rather than fleeting hits.
