ArticleII:Purpose

Section2.TheExecutiveBoardshallfaithfullyexecute The Maroon’spurposebyleadingthe paperwithdecorumandwithattentiontotheneedsofstaffers,theUniversitycommunity,and thecommunitiesconnectedtotheUniversity.

Section2.TheEditor(s)-in-Chief,ManagingEditor(s),ChiefProductionOfficer(s),andChief FinancialOfficer(s)shallmakeuptheExecutiveBoardof The Maroon.

Section1.Thepurposeof The Maroon shallbetoprocess,interrogate,andcommunicatetruths thatarerelevanttothediverseecosystemofcommunitiesconnectedtotheUniversityof Chicago. The Maroon knowsthatthetruthiseasytoassertbuthardtocapture. The Maroon is thereforecommittedtoajournalismofcontextualization,ajournalismthatapproachesthetruth fromasmanyperspectivesaspossible.Ourjournalismisguidedbyourstrongbeliefinthe positivepoweraccessibleinformationhasonfreeandequitablesocieties.

Section1.Allmembersof The Maroon mustbestudentsattheCollegeattheUniversityof Chicagoand/oranygraduateorprofessionalschoolattheUniversityofChicago.Everymember of The Maroon mustbeactivelyenrolledattheUniversity ofChicago.

Section2.Allmembersof The Maroon areresponsibleforupholdingthevaluesenumeratedin thestatementofpurpose.Tothisend,allmembersof The Maroon areentitledtothefollowing setofcapabilities:theabilitytodissentpubliclyfrom Maroon leadershipwithoutfearofreprisal whileupholding The Maroon’sbasicvaluesofjournalistethics,respect,anddecorum; reasonableaccesstotheattentionoftheExecutiveBoard;accesstorelevantinformation, includingbutnotlimitedtofinancialrecords,justificationforcertainexecutivedecisions,and relevantlegaldocuments.

Pursuanttoourcommitmenttotruth,thewell-beingofourcampusandlocalcommunities,and democracy, The Chicago Maroon anditsmemberspromisetoupholdthefollowingConstitution.

ArticleIII:Membership

Section1.Thenameofthisorganizationshallbe The Chicago Maroon,hereafterreferredtoas “The Maroon.”

Section3.Membershipin The Maroon mayberevokedbytheEditor(s)-in-Chief,theManaging Editor(s),ortherelevantHeadEditor(s)ofthemember’ssection(s).Removalfromthepaperis atthediscretionoftheaforementionedofficers.

Section1.TheEditor(s)-in-Chiefand/ortheManagingEditor(s)areresponsibleforhostingat leastonemeetingforalleditorsperquarter ThismeetingshouldincludetheentireExecutive Boardandallotherofficersorstudentswith“editor”intheirtitleoraneditorlevelposition;this doesnotincludeentrylevelcopyeditors.Alleditorsarerequiredtoattendthesemeetings. Consistentfailuretoattendthesemeetingsmayresultindemotionorremovalfromthepaper.

Section1. The Maroon shallhavethefollowingofficers:Editor(s)-in-Chief;ManagingEditor(s); ChiefFinancialOfficer(s);ChiefProductionOfficer(s);theHeadEditor(s)orthemostsenior Editorsofeacheditorialsection(Arts,Copy,Crossword,Design,GreyCity,News,Photo, Podcast,Sports,Video,Viewpoints);andthedirectorsofeachBusinessdivision.

Section2. TheEditor(s)-in-Chiefand/ortheManagingEditor(s)areresponsibleforhostingat leastonemeetingforallmembersof The Maroon atleastonceperquarter.Thismeetingmustbe reasonablyaccessibletoallmembers,withtimeallocatedformemberstoexpresstheirviews about The Maroon,itscontents,oranyeditorialdecisionsmadebyitsstaff.TheentireExecutive Boardisrequiredtoattendthismeeting.

Section4. The Maroon doesnotdiscriminateonthebasisofrace,ethnicity,religion,sexual orientation,gender,genderexpression,age,nationalorigin,ancestry,disability,maritalstatus,or militarystatus,inanyofitsactivitiesoroperations.

Section2.Thedutyoftheseofficersshallbetoupholdtheaforementionedmissionofpurpose andtoexecutetheresponsibilitiesoftheirrespectivesections.

Section5.Incaseofremovalfrom The Maroon,individualsareentitledtoanappealprocessin whichtheExecutiveBoardwilldetermine,byasimplemajorityvote,whethertheappellantwas wronglyremovedfromthepaper.Iftheofficer(s)responsibleforremovingthestudentare membersoftheExecutiveBoard,theywillbebarredfromvoting.Boththestudentwhohasbeen removedandtheofficer(s)whoremovedthestudentareentitledtoprovidethenecessary informationtomaketheircase.Thisprivilegeincludesaccesstoinformationnecessarytomakea rebuttal.

ArticleVI:Electing,Appointing,andRemovingOfficers

Section3.Allmemberswhohavebeeneligibletovoteforatleasttwoquartersareeligibleto runforexecutivepositions.CandidatesareprohibitedfromrunningforExecutiveBoard positionsif,duringtheirterm(thefollowingspring,fall,and/orwinterquarters),theyintendto studyabroad,takeanofficialleaveofabsencefromtheUniversityortakeatleastonequarteroff from The Maroon.AnymemberoftheExecutiveBoard whotakesaquarteroffbecauseof unforeseencircumstancesmustresignfromtheirposition.

Section6.Allothermembersof The Maroon areeligibletovoteiftheyhavebeenactive membersforatleastonequarterandholdapositionthatrequiresanapplication.

Section7.ExecutiveBoardmemberscanonlyberemovedwithatwo-thirdsvotefrom voting-eligiblemembersof The Maroon whoelecttovoteintheelection,or,inspecialcasesbya two-thirdsmajorityvotebytheDiversity,Equity,andInclusionBoard(thisprocessisoutlinedin thebylaws).AlettercallingfortheremovaloftheExecutiveBoardmembersignedbyatleast fivemembersof The Maroon mustbedeliveredtotheExecutiveBoard.TheExecutiveBoard,

Section1.ElectionsforExecutiveBoardpositionsmustbeheldatleastonceperyear.Barring extenuatingcircumstances,electionsshallbeheldinpersontheSaturdayfollowingthefifth weekofwinterquarter

Section2.UptotwopeoplemayrunforanyExecutiveBoardposition.However,iftwopeople runforEditor-in-Chief,onemustbedesignated“deputy.”

Section4.ThesittingEditor(s)-in-Chief,ManagingEditor(s),ChiefProductionOfficer(s),and ChiefFinancialOfficer(s)shallruntheelectionsfortheirrespectivepositions.Theymaynot voteexcepttobreakties.Votingshalloccurviaprivateballot.

Section5.Priortoelections,allcandidatesmustannouncetotheentirepapertheirintenttorun bytheendofthethirdweekofwinterquarter.Candidatesmustmakeawrittenplatform availabletoallmembersof The Maroon bytheendofthefourthweekofwinterquarter.

Section3.WiththeexceptionofExecutiveBoardmembers, whoarevotedintotheirpositions annually,allofficersshallbeappointedpursuanttotheirinternalsectionprotocol. The Maroon leavesthecreationandamendmentoftheseprotocolstoindividualsections.However,the Editor(s)-in-Chief,ManagingEditor,andExecutiveBoardmayinterveneandadjustinternal protocolsiftheydeemitnecessary.

Section2.Thedutiesofeachofthesesectionsshallbetoproduceorhelpproduceconsistent, high-qualitycontentpursuanttotheirrespectivescopes.Additionally,eachsectionisresponsible fordeterminingitsinternalmembershipstructure,promotionprocess,andoperationalnorms. WiththeexceptionofViewpoints,eachsectionisundertheultimateauthorityoftheExecutive BoardandtheEditor(s)-in-Chief.

Section8.Ifanelectedofficervacatestheirpostduringtheirterm,aninterimofficershallbe appointedbytheEditor(s)-in-Chief.TheEditor(s)-in-Chiefmaydecidetoholdaspecialelection tofilltherole,buttheyarenotobligatedtodoso.IftheEditor-in-Chief(s)areallremovedor otherwiseunabletofulfilltheirpositions,amemberoftheExecutiveBoardwilltaketheirplace. Theorderofsuccessionshallbe:DeputyEditor-in-Chief(ifapplicable),ManagingEditor,and DeputyManagingEditor(ifapplicable).IfnomemberofthesittingExecutiveBoardisableto fulfillthedutiesofthevacantposition,anemergencyelectionshallbeheld.Thiselectionshall followthesamerulesasaregularExecutiveBoardelection.Theofficersof The Maroon shallbe responsibleforcarryingoutthisemergencyelection.

ArticleVIII:Committees

uponreceivingtheletter,mustcirculatethelettertotheentirestaffof The Maroon andholda votewithinsevendaysofreceivingtheletter.Withtheexceptionoftheofficer(s)upfor impeachment,allmemberswhoareeligibletovoteinaregularExecutiveBoardelectionare eligibletovoteinanremovalelection.

Section9.AtthediscretionoftheEditor(s)-in-Chief,votesforscheduledelectionsand impeachmentmaybecollectedvirtuallyinordertoensureaquorumofeligiblevotersorifan in-personelectionisnotpossible.Votingprocedureshallremainotherwiseunchanged.

Section1.Thestandingsectionsof The Maroon shallbe:Arts,Business,Copy,Crossword, Design/Production,GreyCity,News,Photo,Podcast,Sports,Video,andViewpoints.Each sectionshallberunbyoneormoreHeadEditor(s)orSectionHead(s)whoshall,inadditionto runningthesectionasanofficer,serveasthemainliaisonbetweenthesectionandtheExecutive Board.

Section3.Viewpoints,astheopinionsectionof The Maroon,shallhavepartialeditorial independencefromtherestof The Maroon.Thisindependence entitlesViewpointstopublish contentwithoutfearofretributionfromtheExecutiveBoardonthebasisofideology. The Maroon shallbeabletoeditViewpointscontentfor clarity,grammar,andethicalandlegal standards.

ArticleVII:Sections

Section4.TheAdvisoryBoardshallprovidestrategic vision,advice,andoversightonbusiness, finance,leadership,management,journalisticstandardsandpractices,andeditorial decision-making.Aneditorialadvisor,distinctfromtheAdvisoryBoardbutamemberofthe Universitycommunity,willbeavailabletooffer The Maroon on-calljournalisticadvice.The AdvisoryBoarddoesnothavefinalsayovertheactionsof The Maroon withtheexceptionof budgetapproval.

Section6.TheAdvisoryBoardshallbecomposedof fivemembersoftheUniversityofChicago community,solicitedbytheExecutiveBoardandconfirmedbymajorityvoteofthe Editor(s)-in-Chief,theChairoftheAdvisoryBoard,and The Maroon’sCenterforLeadership andInvolvementAdvisor.

Section3.TheEditorialBoardshallproduceeditorials thatrepresenttheinstitutionalvoiceof The Maroon.

Section1.Bylawsof The Chicago Maroon shallbeestablishedandalteredbyamajorityvoteof theExecutiveBoard.Anymemberof The Maroon mayproposeabylaw.Inthecaseofatiein thevotingforabylaw,theEditor(s)-in-Chiefshalldecidewhethertoenactthebylaw.

Section1.Thestandingcommitteesof The Maroon shallbe:theDiversity,Equity,andInclusion Board(DEI);theEditorialBoard;andtheAdvisoryBoard.

ArticleIX:Bylaws

Section2.TheDiversity,Equity,andInclusionBoardshallensureequityin The Maroon’s internaloperationsbyensuringtransparentandfairpromotions,hearingharassmentand discriminationcomplaints,andstrengtheningoutreachpracticestoformamorediversestaff. Anymemberof The Maroon iseligibletoapplyfortheDEIBoard.

Section5.TheEditorialBoardshallbecomposedofnomorethantenvoting-eligiblemembers of The Maroon TheEditorialBoardshallberunby eithertheEditor-in-ChiefortheManaging Editor,whoshallberesponsibleforschedulingbi-weeklyorweeklymeetings,recruitingnew members,andensuringthateditorialsarepublishedconsistentlyandwiththehigheststandardof quality.MembersoftheEditorialBoardmustattendeverymeeting.Nomorethanthreemembers oftheEditorialBoardmaydissentfromapublishededitorial.Ifmorethanthreemembers dissent,theeditorialmaynotbepublished.Dissentersareentitledbutnotrequiredtoexplainthe reason(s)fortheirdissentattheendoftheeditorial.

ArticleX:Amendments

Section1.Anymemberof The Maroon mayrequestanamendmenttotheConstitution.

Section2.Inorderforanamendmenttoberatified,two-thirdsoftheExecutiveBoardmustvote affirmatively.

Section2.ThisConstitutionanditsbylawsshallbemadepublicandaccessibleon The Maroon’s website,on The Maroon’sSlackworkspace,andasaphysicalcopyinthe Maroon office.All amendmentsshallbeincorporatedintothisConstitutioninatimelyfashion(nolongerthantwo weeksfollowingratification).
