September 2012 E-Newsletter National President's Message Welcome to Fall 2012! It is always exciting to see new students begin their graduate education in the fields of psychology and behavioral sciences, to welcome back current students, and to pause and thank our remarkable faculty and staff who continue to help The Chicago School of Professional Psychology thrive. Together, we are starting the new semester with the continued emphasis on academic excellence; on finding new and innovative ways to bring quality mental health services to individuals, families, and communities; on reaching out to underserved populations; and on staying ahead of advocacy efforts to ensure the needs and rights of those seeking mental health care are never forgotten and protected. As we celebrate the beginning of a new academic year, I challenge the TCSPP community to start each workday thinking about how we can excel in our profession to meet the challenges facing many communities and the mental health profession. Directly related, I encourage you to think through how we can better prepare our students to meet those challenges over the course of their careers as the profession evolves. We all know today’s student is very different. While many continue to take a traditional career path, more and more are starting graduate school in the middle of a career, some are changing careers, an ever growing number have significant responsibilities outside of the classroom and are juggling work, raising a family, caregiving, and school all at the same time. As we train our students for excellence in their careers, let’s never forget we are here to support the mission of The Chicago School of Professional Psychology and to invest deeply in meeting the educational needs of our students along the way. Warm regards, Michele Nealon-Woods National President

Los Angeles Campus Students Train at the Los Angeles Mission Thanks to a new partnership with the Los Angeles Mission, a 75-year-old, faithbased organization dedicated to helping the homeless in downtown Skid Row, students at the Los Angeles campus will provide much-needed mental health services to homeless women at its Anne Douglas Center for Women. The clients at the Center are particularly vulnerable, having experienced severe trauma from physical and sexual abuse. Students from Clinical Psychology, Forensic Psychology and Marital and Family Therapy programs will work under the supervision of licensed psychologists to develop assessment and treatment plans. The learning experience will be invaluable to TCSPP students, who will have the opportunity to participate firsthand in the process of recovery – and see the opportunity for growth, hope and dignity along the way.
