I am pushing 40, mum to Elf, a 5 year old boy, and work parttime for both sanity purposes and to get a decent lunch hour.

efore Elf started school, I wanted to be a playground Yummy Mummy. I’d have lost that stone or three by then, so I’d be in my Yummy Mummy uniform of cool jeans, heels, “natural” makeup and immaculate hair. I was not going to be a Jeans’n’Fleece mum. Jeans’n’fleeces have their place, just not teemed with bedhead, no makeup, porridge on your chin and your other half’s coat slung over the top. Jeans’n’Fleece mums are not Yummy Mummies. Fast forward to school. I only drop off on Fridays, but pick up three days when I’ve been to work - so I look alright. Working Mummy - not quite Yummy Mummy but good enough. Friday is my day off with an extra hour in bed. I usually lounge around and have a bath after drop-off – a bit of me-time. So what do I end up looking like in the playground on a Friday morning? Hair scraped back into a ponytail showing greasy roots, no makeup, jeans and – yes – a fleece. Why do I do it every week? Because me-time on my day off is, unbelievably, more important than looking like a Yummy Mummy in front of all the other mums who, to be quite honest, all scrub up well but are really just normal mums like me.” CS

A New Arrival What About Me? Preparing your children for the arrival of a sibling can be an exciting yet daunting task, especially if they are younger children, used to receiving your full attention and still achieving milestones of their own. Your child’s initial reaction to the introduction of a baby brother or sister may be one of joy, anger, or seemingly no reaction at all - all of which are completely normal. The reactions mainly depend on the age of the child, and whether they understand the changes that may take place in the family dynamic, but learning about their evolving feelings and how they react to them is a big part of a preschooler’s emotional development. Here are some tips on ways to get your child ready, and hopefully excited, about the new arrival... Share the news - it is important to bear in mind that most under 5’s struggle to understand time, so using the seasons may be a good way to explain when their baby brother or sister will arrive. You may be faced with a series of questions, especially as your bump continues to grow, but preschoolers will generally only be looking for literal answers, like “the baby comes from inside mummy’s tummy”.

Recommended titles include ‘There’s a House Inside My Mummy’ by Giles Andreae and Vanessa Cabban, ‘What’s in Your Tummy Mummy?’ by Sam Lloyd, ‘I’m Important Too!: A New Baby (New Experiences)’ by Jen Green and Mike Gordon, and ‘Mummy, Mummy, What’s In your Tummy?’ by Sarah SimpsonEnock and Linzi West, and ‘Annie Rose Is My Little Sister (Alfie)’ by Shirley Hughes, all with colourful illustrations and simple, positive language. Keep some focus on the older sibling - spend quality time together doing their favourite activities and talk about what a great helper they will be when their baby brother or sister arrives. As you decorate the nursery, think about introducing something new for their room too. Perhaps you could present the older sibling with a gift from the new baby when it is born. Reassure - younger children may associate doctors and hospitals with being poorly. Reassure them by taking them along to an antenatal appointment or scan, where they may be able to see the baby or hear the heartbeat. Let them know that doctors and midwives are there to help mummy. Talk to friends - especially those who have gone through this process with their own children, as they may have some valuable advice, and it will also help to inspire conversations with your child about their friends and their siblings. For the icing... 500g icing sugar 40g unsweetened cocoa powder 30g unsalted butter 170ml milk 270g dessicated coconut 1. Grown-up Helper! Preheat the oven to 180ºC (350ºF/Gas 4). 2. Grease a shallow 23cm square cake tin and line the base and sides with baking paper 3. Sift the flour and cornflour into a bowl. Add the vanilla, butter, sugar, milk and egg. Using an electric whisk, beat for 3 minutes, and then pour into the tin. 4. Grown-up Helper! Bake for 50-55 minutes, or until lightly golden, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool. 5. Grown-Up Helper! Using a knife, trim the crusts from the sides, and cut the cake into 16 squares. 6. To make the icing, sift the icing sugar and cocoa into a heatproof bowl and add the butter and milk. Grown-up Helper! Stand over a saucepan of simmering water and stir until the icing is smooth, then remove from the heat. 7. Place 90g of the coconut in a bowl. Using two forks, roll a piece of cake in the chocolate icing, then hold over the bowl to allow the excess to drain. 8. Roll the cake in coconut, then place on a wire rack. Repeat with the rest of the cakes.

Nana’s Tip - Slice the lamingtons in half and serve with a spoonful of whipped cream in the centre. Yummy!

wo friends have recently returned from spa breaks. I am jealous. I couldn’t justify spending money which should go instead on furnishing our new home, but I am tired, grouchy and could really do with a spa break. But if I really thought about it, what I actually need now is a whole lot simpler than that. And cheaper. Here are my guidelines for an ideal minibreak. 1. Book a day off work during the week, or if you are at home, book child into before/ after-school clubs or nursery all day. 2. Have an already tidy, clean house so there are no distracting or guilty thoughts of “I must tackle that ironing pile/wash up/rehouse those lost toys.” 3. Pre-arrange a trip to the supermarket, not to buy loo rolls or washing powder, but some healthy, nutritious food to eat on your mini-break. Croissants for breakfast. Falafels with salad, fruit and yogurt for lunch. Your choice. 4. Then do what you want - I’d get up after the boys have gone to work/school. A little lie in, counteracted by a refreshing stroll around the shoreline near my house. Get some exercise. Then a

luxurious bath overflowing with bubbles. Time to pamper with that nice gift set that I got for Christmas (from one of the friends returning from that spa break!). Paint my nails. Relax until lunch time, reading my magazine or book on the sofa. Or just spending the time thinking - about how I can squeeze in a bit of me-time each day. Or how I can revamp my weekday recipes as we are all boring of Monday pasta, Tuesday casserole, Wednesday pie.
