Have baby, will travel Travelling with a baby or small child can often be stressful and many parents worry about how they will manage holidays and long journeys with a young family. Here, Jo Middleton explains why breastmilk makes the perfect food on the go. The beauty of breastfeeding is that it provides a constant for your baby – no matter where you go or how strange your surroundings, your breasts are a familiar and secure source of comfort. Journeying with a breastfed baby is so simple and convenient in fact that many women consciously decide to keep breastfeeding if they know they have holidays or long journeys coming up. There are a few things it is worth bearing in mind when thinking about breastfeeding on the move:
Before you leave
The great thing about breastfeeding is that it takes such a lot of the pressure off – no need to fret about water quality, how you are going to make up bottles or how to carry all the supplies you will need. Your baby’s meals are always readily available and unaffected by climate, surrounding or issues of hygiene. If you are going somewhere where you need vaccinations it is a good idea to talk to your GP about the fact that you are breastfeeding. Most guidance suggests that both live and inactivated vaccines are safe to have while breastfeeding but do discuss this with a health professional.
On the move
Before you go, think about how you are going to transport your baby and consider how you will deal with the practicalities of getting about. If you don’t already have one it might be worth considering investing in a sling. Travelling with your baby in a sling can make navigating airports, train stations or unfamiliar places much simpler and calmer. You can even position your baby in a sling so they are able to breastfeed at the same time, meaning you are hands free to check in your luggage, deal with older children or find your way across a strange city.
Air travel
Being able to breastfeed your baby during a flight is so useful, as it is a great way to keep your baby calm and help them sleep. It is particularly helpful during take off and landing as it can help to alleviate the ear pain associated with changes in cabin pressure. Some airlines are more family friendly than others so do try and get recommendations from friends and family if
6
you can, or talk to your travel agent or the airline directly about the support and facilities they will be able to offer you and your family.
Milk supply
It is useful to bear in mind that you may experience some temporary drop in milk supply when travelling. This may be caused by dehydration due to long flights or illness and is nothing to worry about. Keep yourself topped up with plenty of fluids, breastfeed regularly and milk levels will soon settle back to normal levels. If you experience any kind of serious illness while you are travelling this doesn’t have to mean an end to breastfeeding. So long as you keep up your fluids to maintain a good supply you should be able to continue to nurse as usual.
When in Rome…
Be culturally sensitive when travelling abroad. Some countries have different attitudes towards breastfeeding in public and it is wise to find out beforehand what is locally acceptable. Check with the tourist board or your travel agent before you leave so you can be prepared to feed discreetly or in private if necessary. If you out and about and are unsure of what to do you can always diplomatically ask a local mother.
Do I need to supplement?
For exclusively breastfed babies there is no need to supplement. Even in very hot climates there is no need to give extra drinks of water as breastmilk is designed to satisfy thirst as well as hunger. In hot weather you will probably notice your baby taking more of a ‘little and
www.chichestergrapevine.co.uk
summer 2010 thechichesterfamilygrapevine often’ approach as they will need to have frequent short drinks. Do make sure you drink plenty of fluids yourself to avoid dehydration.
Travelling stories
For Nicky, a 30 year old mum of one, being able to breastfeed her daughter Megan in Greece was a godsend. “Megan was just under 18 months when we took her to Greece and I purposely continued to breastfeed until then because I knew how useful it would be while travelling. It was great to be able to breastfeed her in the plane, especially during take off when she became unsettled. I don’t know how I would have kept her occupied during the flight if I hadn’t been breastfeeding! “While we were in Greece it was reassuring to be able to breastfeed when we weren’t sure about water quality. We went up from our usual two feeds a day to four a day. It was such an easy thing to do – there were lots of women topless on the beach anyway so no one was looking at me at all and Megan was very happy with it! I always fed her after lunch and she would then sleep in her pushchair on
La Leche League (LLL) Breastfeeding Support in Chichester For friendly mother-to-mother breastfeeding support from pregnancy through to weaning, just say 'la lay-chay' Hello! I’m Lois Rowlands and I’m an LLL Leader, which is what we call our LLL breastfeeding counsellors. LLL is a worldwide charity that for over 50 years has offered accurate breastfeeding information backed by warm, caring, mother-to-mother support so that new mothers (whatever their place or circumstance) can gain the confidence they need to breastfeed their babies. We support mothers by phone and e-mail and through monthly meetings. Perhaps you’ve never heard of us? Well we don’t campaign— we just focus on the important job of quietly helping mothers and babies get the information they need to breastfeed for as long as they want to. If you’re breastfeeding, or thinking about it, why not give us a try at The Children and Family Centre in Tangmere Primary
the beach for an hour or so, giving me chance to have a nice rest on my sun lounger and read a book!” Lucy, mum to Ella, 6, and Josie, 3, had a similar experience when travelling to Spain. “I deliberately didn’t wean Josie until she was about 18 months old because we were going to Spain to stay with family. Breastfeeding was the only way I knew to guarantee to get her to sleep and I wouldn’t have been able to manage the flight without it! As it was I breastfed on take off and she slept all through the flight. Perfect!” Jo Middleton is a breastfeeding counsellor, freelance journalist and enthusiastic mummy blogger. You can read her popular parenting blog, capturing the highs and lows of family life, at www.slummysinglemummy.wordpress.com
School every other Thursday from 10-12? You don't need to have a breastfeeding problem to come to our meetings! Breastfeeding mothers, pregnant or new mums and those who have been breastfeeding for longer are all welcome. Some people come to find out more about adjusting to life as a mother, infant sleep, starting solids, going back to work or stopping breastfeeding. We can help with all those too. Meetings are a really nice opportunity to be with other breastfeeding mothers and it’s a particularly good idea to come along when you're pregnant—you can find out so much more about feeding your baby from mums who are already doing it. Our meetings are very informal though not drop-ins. I usually have in mind a particular theme we might discuss, such as early days, introducing solids, or feeding an older baby, but we always address questions and concerns that mums arrive with first. You can bring along your baby and toddler and LLL welcomes older children too, though we’re not a playgroup so they might well find it a bit boring, especially if you’re enjoying listening and talking! I’m part of the LLL West Sussex Group and we organise meetings in other areas too. You can read more about us, check meeting dates and times and link to our national and international websites at www.LLLwestsussex.org.uk. We have a vast lending library of books and leaflets on breastfeeding and parenting—ones you don’t generally see in the bookshops and libraries—and a sling library too. Check out the list on our website to see if anything interests you. And if you can’t get to a meeting or you have an urgent breastfeeding concern, you can call or email me direct on 01243 532807 or lois@LLLwestsussex.org.uk. Hope to see you soon.

The Ultimate Balancing Act Juggling both children and work commitments can be a difficult task for any parent. So how can you make it work for you?
O
ften we feel we are being pulled in so many different directions, and that there aren’t enough hours in the day to achieve all we set out to. When returning to work following maternity leave, many parents experience the same anxieties about spending time with their children, and partner, as well as maintaining family finances and achieveing that much needed ‘Me Time’. So how can we achieve that all important Work / Life balance? Flexible working opportunities can benefit everyone employers, employees and their families. Most employers now recognise that it makes good business sense to provide flexible working opportunities for their staff, and you have a right to request a flexible working pattern if you have parental responsibility for a child under 16 years of age. What is it? ‘Flexible working’ is a phrase that describes any working pattern adapted to suit your needs. Common types of flexible working are:
Part time: working less than the normal hours, perhaps by working fewer days per week Flexi time: choosing when to work (there’s usually a core period during which you have to work) Annualised hours: your hours are worked out over a year (often set shifts with you deciding when to work the other hours) Compressed hours: working your agreed hours over fewer days Staggered hours: different starting, break and finishing times for employees in the same workplace Job sharing: sharing a job designed for one person with someone else Homeworking: working from home Remember, this list is not exhaustive and there may be other forms of flexible working that are better suited to you and your employer. For more information, and to find out if you have the right to request a flexible working pattern, visit www.direct.gov.uk Covering the cost of Childcare All three and four year olds in England are entitled to a free early learning place. If you are a working parent, lone

parent or a student you may be entitled to extra help with the costs of early learning and childcare. From September 2010, all Local Authorities are offering 15 hours of free early education a week, delivered over a minimum of 3 days. You may also be able to get Child Tax Credits to help with the cost of looking after your children. If you are on a low income, you may also qualify for Working Tax Credits. This could mean getting back up to 80 per cent of your childcare costs up to a limit of £140 a week for one child and £240 a week for two children. You need to use a registered or approved childcare provider for this to apply. To find out whether you qualify, or for more information, visit www.hmrc.gov.uk/taxcredits or call 0800 300 3900. Some employers offer a childcare allowance or vouchers as part of a ‘salary sacrifice’ scheme. It is worth asking your line manager, personnel or human resources department whether your employer runs a scheme like this. For more information and advice on different types of childcare and what funding is available to help you cover the cost, please visit www.hants.gov.uk or www.westsussex.gov.uk or call your local Childrens Information service at the County Council. Alternatively, we are beginning to see a new generation of ‘Mumpreneurs’ who are turning their ability to multitask and their creative ideas into flexible, home-based businesses, many of which are centred around the needs of their children. But which option is best for you? Here we explore the opinions and experiences of three working mums who are tackling the Balancing Act in different ways...

ouise Gibbs, runs Baby Signing Mummy, and has been nominated for the Mumpreneur Awards 2010. “I have worked full time as a paediatric nurse for almost 10 years and I have always loved the job. I love working with children and their families and being able to help and care for them when they are unwell or in need of support and advice. Three years ago my world changed when I had my own gorgeous daughter, I continued to work full time and my daughter was in the hospital nursery. It took it’s toll on us both, she would cry at being left and as she grew older she would tell me ‘mummy I missed you all day’ and ‘mummy is it please a mummy day today?’ It broke my heart! At the start of this year I was diagnosed with pneumonia and was unwell for several weeks. It was this final straw that made me and my partner seriously look into starting my own business - I had researched and baby signed with our daughter from 5 months of age, I loved it, and so did our daughter! I am convinced her advanced sentence structure is down to this early communication and bond that we built up through the signing. From that early research I knew there was no one place that parents could access an unbiased and balanced view of baby signing, coming from a scientific background I wanted evidence! Thus Baby Signing Mummy was born and since February it has just grown at a phenomenal rate. I cannot believe just how much happier we are as a family, I have managed to cut right down on my hours at the hospital and spend quality time with our daughter and at home. It is incredibly hard work, but I am so determined to make this work, I feel that I have missed out on so much quality time with Isabella and I love just being able to fit the business around time spent with her at the Park, or taking her on walks and just enjoying listening to her playing and telling me what she has been doing at preschool. This has so far been the best thing we could ever have done as a family, I feel so more like a mummy now, rather than a nurse that has a daughter but is out of the house 12 hours a day. I hope Baby Signing Mummy can become a great resource for all parents and give others the encouragement to start signing with their little ones either with me or any company! It might even help other mummies realize working for themselves is a fabulous idea!” For more information please contact Louise at louise@babysigningmummy.com
