We are not a civic club, a charitable organization, or department of city government. We are a private, non-profit, taxpaying corporation focused on improving the community and businesses of Belle Fourche. BELLE FOURCHE HISTORY
In 1935, the state of South Dakota passed a law allowing municipalities to operate their own liquor stores. Belle Fourche immediately proposed that the city do so in June. In the meantime, the state attorney declared that law to be unconstitutional The city of Belle Fourche held an election to see if their citizens supported the city own ing/operating the liquor store. That election supported the city owned story by 502 to 298. So the city challenged the state’s attorney’s ruling and won, with Mayor and lawyer Dan McCutcheon arguing the case.
The city named former mayor Dan Hickey as the liquor store manager with the store being located at the old Cash and Carry meat store.
The recent quarterly (Aug 3, 1935) profits bring to $67,419.66 the total profit earned by the liquor and beer stores and the amount collected from private beer licenses since the city went into the hard drink business July 1, 1935.

LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR
Budget Time!! Definitely not my favorite time of year but we all know it is very crit ical to have. Not sure if you are aware that the Chamber of Commerce was looking at closing their doors roughly five years ago due to financial struggles. When I start ed working for the Belle Fourche Chamber our funds were okay but not where the Chamber could stand on their own. Over the past two years I have been working very hard and figuring out ways to bring more funds into the Chamber without hav ing to ask our members for more money. Just this year we went to a tiered structure with more benefits, started a foundation so we can apply for grant money, increased
our sponsorship funds and helped start the new Belle Fourche Magazine.
Looking at our budget for the upcoming year has been very stressful as we are needing funds to keep our doors open. I can say that we are not in the red, but we are nowhere near where we need to be. We have requested funds from the County ($20,000) and the City ($38,841.40) this year to help us get on our feet and move forward as we continue to build memberships, programs, advertising materials, and the founda tion. Our goal is to become self-sufficient. Without the City and County’s help with funds, the Chamber will be forced to close its doors by March of 2023.
We ask that if you are available, please attend the City allocation meeting on October 12th at 5:30pm to support the Chamber in receiving the funds that we have requested. We would greatly appreciate your support! As a side note: We have heard back from Butte County and they will be awarding the Chamber $12,500. We greatly appreciate their support for our upcoming year.
