Daily News… MORE THAN 1,000 CHOSEN FOR ONE-WAY MARS REALITY-TV MISSION The Hague — More than 1,000 candidates -- from 200,000 hopefuls -- have been chosen to train for a private Mars colonisation mission to be partly funded by a reality-TV show following their training and subsequent steps, organisers said Thursday. They are to be whittled down to just 24, who will be sent over six launches starting in 2024, according to Mars One, the Dutch-based non-profit group behind the audacious endeavour. The only catch is that the space-bound settlers will be on a one-way ticket to the Red Planet which lies a minimum 55 million kilometres (34 million miles) -- six months’ travel -- from Earth. Costs are too high to contemplate a return trip. Mars One said the selected 1,058 would-be emigrants to Mars, from 140 countries, were informed on December 30 they were the lucky few deemed to meet the criteria -- including an «indomitable spirit», «good judgement», «a good sense of play», disease- and drug-free, English-speaking -- to be interplanetary pioneers. «The challenge with 200,000 applicants is separating those who we feel are physically and mentally adept to become human ambassadors on Mars from those who are obviously taking the mission much less seriously. We even had a couple of applicants submit their videos in the nude,» said organisation co-founder Bas Landsdorp. The group’s chief medical officer, Norbert Kraft, said the candidates will now be called in for «rigorous simulations, many in team settings, with focus on testing (their) physical and emotional capabilities» over the next two years. The candidates will now be narrowed down in a number of phases starting this year. Mars One said that process was caught up in «ongoing negotiations» with media companies over television rights.

International News… PESSIMISM Leaders Cuba’s santeria religion warned in their annual message that 2014 will bring a period of personal and political strife. The high priests of the religion, which mingles aspects of Catholicism with African beliefs, urged Cubans in a New Year’s letter to be open to dialogue and reconciliation, warning that discord could even lead to armed conflict. The high priests of the Afro-Cuban religion issue their predictions each year with input from some 1,000 «babalawos» or spiritual elders. Santeria, said be Cuba’s most popular religion, has a widespread following among Cuba’s 11 million inhabitants.

WRONG PRESIDENT NEW YEAR MESSAGE Cyprus’s state broadcaster apologised on Thursday for transmitting the wrong presidential New Year message on December 31 and said an investigation had begun into what happened. Instead of putting out a message from President Nicos Anastasiades to welcome in 2014, it inadvertently transmitted a radio address by the man he replaced. A CyBC statement said an inquiry was under way after «the grave mistake of inadvertently transmitting for a few seconds a New Year’s message by former President of the Republic Mr Demetris Christofias».

Us names olympic hockey squads for Sochi
Marché U vous souhaite une bonne et heureuse année
The United States named 13 members of the 2010 Winter Olympic silver-medal squad to the roster for the Sochi Winter Olympics after the National Hockey League’s Winter Classic on Wednesday. A young and relatively inexperienced American squad lost to Canada in the Vancouver Olympic final when Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby netted the gold-medal goal for a home-ice triumph. The 25-man US roster for Sochi next month includes returning leaders, among them forwards David Backes, Dustin Brown, Zach Parise and Ryan Callahan plus defenseman Ryan Suter and Brooks Orpik and goaltender Ryan Miller. Centers Backes, Paul Stastny, Ryan Kesler and Joe Pavelski are back from Vancouver and joined by Derek Stepan, the top scorer for the 2010 world junior champion US squad. Other wingers include Patrick Kane, Phil Kessel, James van Riemsdyk, Blake Wheeler, Max Pacioretty and T.J. Oshie. «Any time you get a chance to represent your country, it’s great,» Kessel said. «I’m really excited.» Van Riemsdyk said «it’s going to be a huge thrill.» Orpik’s NHL backline partner for Pittsburgh, Paul Martin, is among the other Olympic defensemen, as are Kevin Shattenkirk, John Carlson, Justin Faulk, Cam Fowler and Ryan McDonagh.
Miller will be joined as an Olympic netminder by Detroit’s Jimmy Howard and Jonathan Quick, the Los Angeles goalie who won last year’s Conn Smythe Trophy as the NHL’s best goaltender. «It’s a tremendous honor,» Howard said. «Words cannot put it into perspective.» Among those not named to the US lineup were bobby Ryan and Jason Pominville, who rank third and fourth in goals this season among American NHL players. The deadline for naming rosters is next week, although nations may substitute for injuries after that. The United States will be in Group A with host Russia, Slovakia and Slovenia in the Olympic preliminary round. The Americans open February 13 against Slovakia. The US Olympic women’s hockey roster was also named. It included 11 Olympic veterans, with forward Julie Chu making her fourth Olympic appearance and becoming the oldest woman on a US Olympic hockey squad at 31. The US women’s lineup also includes last year’s US college player of the year, forward Amanda Kessel, the sister of Toronto Maple Leafs star forward and fellow Olympian Phil Kessel. The US women, who like the men lost to Canada in the 2010 Olympic hockey final, will open in Sochi on February 8 against Finland.

From 14th to 19th April 2014, St. Barth will be host to the fifth edition of the Voiles de SaintBarth. More than seventy boats and 1000 sailors are expected to attend the event, which in just four editions has become a must for those who enjoy racing in the Caribbean. Owners, sailors and partners have got it right. The historic partners will in fact be joined this year by Veuve Clicquot, the world famous champagne house. Once again, this year we can look forward to a fantastic line-up in St. Barth. Five months before the starting gun is fired, forty boats have already registered in the five classes that are available: Maxi yachts, Spinnaker class, Non Spinnaker class, IRC 52s and Multihulls. “This is clear progress, as usually at this time of year, we have only had around thirty boats registered. So I think it is quite reasonable to look forward to seeing more than seventy boats lining up this time,” declared François Tolède, the organizer of the Voiles de Saint-Barth alongside Luc Poupon. High performance sailing out on the water and a
friendly atmosphere ashore, and all within the magnificent setting of St. Barth. The concept attracts the world’s finest yachts, including Rambler, George David’s famous Maxi-Yacht, already confirmed to be returning to the event. Once again this year, we will be able to admire the elegance and speed of this Reichel-Pugh designed 90-foot boat. Selene, Wendy Schmidt’s Swan 80 will also be attending, as will Ocean Phoenix, the Spanish Humphreys 77 skippered by Juan Luis Serra Lalaurie. Staying with the Maxi yachts, for the first time we shall be able to enjoy the sight of Bella Mente, Hap Fauth’s mini-maxi (designed by Judel/Vrolijk) with her crew of 26, including Mike Sanderson and Dee Smith, the Volvo Ocean Race and America’s Cup heroes. One of their major rivals will be Caol Ila R, Alex Schaerer’s Mills designed 68-foot boat, a stand out performer last summer, when she won the Rolex Capri Sailing Week Volcano Race, achieving line honours and first place under corrected time ahead of thirteen other maxis.

All 52 passengers who spent Christmas and New Year trapped on an icebound Russian research vessel in Antarctica were airlifted from the ice Thursday in a dramatic rescue mission. A Chinese helicopter which landed on a makeshift landing pad next to the marooned ship ferried the scientists, tourists and journalists in groups of 12 to an Australian government supply ship, the Aurora Australis. The passengers had been stuck for 10 days in thick pack ice 100 nautical miles east of the French base of Dumont d’Urville after their vessel Akademik Shokalskiy became frozen in place. Three icebreaking ships had been unable to clear a path to it. «Aurora Australis has advised AMSA that the 52 passengers from the Akademik Shokalskiy are now on board,» the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said late Thursday. Expedition leader Chris Turney expressed his «great relief» that the complex operation, which had been fraught with setbacks and challenges, finally went off without a hitch. «We’ve made it to the Aurora Australis safe and sound. A huge thanks to the Chinese and the (government’s) Australian Antarctic Division for all their hard work,» Turney tweeted The Sydney Morning Herald, which has a reporter aboard the Aurora Australis, said many of those brought off the Russian ship were relieved, with one woman crying tears of joy. «It really has been an emotional rollercoaster,» Joanne Sim told the newspaper. Their ordeal began on December 24 when a southerly front and blizzard trapped the Shokalskiy in a dense ice field which several icebreakers -- the Australis, France’s L’Astrolabe and the Chinese-flagged Xue Long -- were unable to penetrate. Efforts to reach the Russian vessel by sea were abandoned on Tuesday in favour of an aerial rescue using the Xue Long’s helicopter, but heavy weather and sea ice stymied efforts until late Thursday. A window of favourable weather allowed the Chinese crew to begin ferrying passengers at around 5pm Australian time (0600 GMT), with groups collected from a landing pad stamped out in the ice beside the Shokalskiy and ferried to an ice floe near the Australis. SA confirmed that all passengers had reached the Australian ship at 10.16pm, some five
hours after Turney first announced that the mission was underway. Though they are free from the ice the group is not expected to reach dry land for several weeks yet, with the Australis having to travel back to the southern city of Hobart via Australia’s Casey Antarctic base to refuel. The Shokalskiy’s crew of 22 will remain on board until the ice breaks up and she can sail on under her own steam. The ship is well provisioned and those on board have not been in any danger. Turney posted a number of videos documenting the rescue, including the red helicopter’s first touchdown on the landing pad, the initial group of passengers trekking across the ice and a second load taking off towards the Australis. The initial plan had been for the helicopter to ferry the passengers back to the Xue Long, where they would board a barge to be transferred to the Aurora Australis, the Australian government’s Antarctic resupply ship. But sea ice prevented the Australis from launching its barge Thursday, forcing a rethink. In the end, the passengers were flown via helicopter from the stranded ship to an ice floe near the Aurora Australis, and then brought on board the Australian icebreaker in a rescue ship. AMSA had estimated the rescue would involve five trips of up to 12 passengers and another two flights for equipment and luggage. Passengers on the stranded ship -- an eclectic mix of scientists, tourists and journalists -- had been following in the footsteps of Australian Sir Douglas Mawson and his 1911-1914 expedition. The team has been carrying out the same scientific experiments that Mawson’s group conducted during their expedition, partly in an attempt to discover how quickly the Antarctic’s sea ice is disappearing. Board games, first-aid and other skills courses, movie marathons in the ship’s auditorium and walks on the ice have helped to pass the time. They even penned a theme song about their adventure and filmed themselves singing it on the top deck. Though they are in remote Antarctica the group dropped in on one of the world’s biggest New Year’s parties, broadcasting live to celebrations in New York’s Times Square from their marooned vessel.

Ornithologist Leblond Gilles has spent a week on the island to complete the dynamic followup of the population of Red-beak Paille-en-queue birds beginning in 2011. Over 70 nests were selected for the banding campaign to be conducted early 2014, once the eggs hatch. Because it is impossible today to band birds, they breed their nests in rock holes of the island. Thanks to this bird monitoring, the team could also discovered new bats caves, those species are protected and particularly sensitive. To be continued...
