Daily News… ACTRESS LINKED TO HOLLANDE BARRED FROM PRESTIGIOUS JURY France’s culture minister on Wednesday blocked actress Julie Gayet from becoming a jury member of a prestigious French academy in Rome following revelations she was having an affair with President Francois Hollande. Investigative weekly Le Canard Enchaine revealed that the 41-year-old had been nominated before Christmas as a member of the 2014 jury for a French academy at the sumptuous Villa Medici, which every year selects a group of French-speaking artists for a 12- to 18-month residency. Jury members are tasked with auditioning candidates for the prestigious fellowship among writers, filmmakers, photographers, stage designers, art historians and others. But on Wednesday, the culture ministry said the actress -- whose affair with Hollande was revealed last week by glossy magazine Closer, prompting his devastated partner to check into hospital for stress -- would not be appointed as planned. «Her name was put forward by Eric de Chassey, director of the Academy of France in Rome-Villa Medici, but the minister decided not to appoint her,» the office of Culture Minister Aurelie Filippetti said. «I do not want to give rise to any controversy,» Filippetti later told journalists. «She was completely competent to be a member of the jury... but it was not helpful to add another controversial issue.» Gayet had been due to be part of the jury alongside other personalities such as French prima ballerina Marie-Agnes Gillot and Italian composer Lucia Ronchetti. She will now be replaced by screenwriter Emmanuele Bernheim, Filippetti said. De Chassey, meanwhile, told iTele television that he picked Gayet for «professional reasons», ruling out any favouritism. «She is a recognised cinema producer, a recognised actress, which has already enabled her to take part in juries, including important juries such as... in Cannes», he said.

International News… GOLDEN ASHES Thieves tried to steal the ashes of the founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud and his wife from a crematorium in London, severely damaging a 2,400-year-old urn that housed their remains. Detectives urged the public to help catch the «callous» people responsible following the attempted theft of the 4th century BC Greek urn sometime around New Year’s Eve. «Even leaving aside the financial value of the irreplaceable urn and the historical significance to whom it related, the fact that someone set out to take an object knowing it contained the last remains of a person defies belief» said Detective.

DOUSE THE ETERNAL FLAME A drunken man has been arrested for trying to douse the eternal flame at the landmark Arc de Triomphe monument in Paris, police said Wednesday. The man parked his car on Tuesday evening near the famed monument on the Champs Elysees, the city’s emblematic avenue, and rushed towards the flame with a fire extinguisher in hand. Police said the man, who was drunk, told them he wanted to extinguish the fire. He has been placed in custody. The flame burns in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which commemorates France’s dead in the two World Wars, at the base of the arch.

Poulenc’s Babar Monday the 20th of January 08:00AM & 10:00PM Catholic Church – Gustavia With the generosity of Nancy Latta Jean-Luc Tingaud, Piano, Guillaume Blanchard, Narrator In summer 1940, Francis Poulenc was staying with cousins in Brive-la-Gaillarde. Derisively, the children of the house lay The Adventures of Babar on top of his piano and ask him to add music to the story. Poulenc improvises freely around narrative situations that are proposed in the book. Over the following years, he reflects often to this magical moment. The History of Babar is born from the memories of his improvisations. The score is dedicated to the eleven children who inspired it : “for my small cousins Sophia, Sylvie, Benoît, Florence and Delphine Périer; Yvan, Alain, Marie-Christine and Marguerite-Marie Villotte and my friends Marthe Bosredon and André Lecœur; in memory of Brive.” It was first publicized on the radio June 14, 1946 by the composer and narrated by Pierre Bernac. “It is an unbroken sequence of pianistic images”.
