Daily News… FRENCH ADVERTISERS HAVE A LAUGH OVER PRESIDENT’S AFFAIR As French President Francois Hollande wades through the fallout of revelations he has been having an affair with an actress, companies are looking to drum up business by having a laugh at his expense. Hollande has had a rough two weeks both personally and politically since glossy magazine Closer published pictures of him hopping off the back of a motor scooter, his head clad in a large black helmet, for an apparent rendezvous with actress Julie Gayet at an apartment near the presidential palace. While most French voters say the president’s love life is his own business, news of the affair has trended on social networks, prompting businesses to seek to tap in on the issue in their ads. A car-hire company, Drive, ran a newspaper ad with a map tracing the route from the Elysee presidential palace to the apartment where Hollande’s tryst ocurred -- and pricing the trip at five euros. «Unseen. Unknown. Private cars, tinted windows. At prices this low, you should choose discretion,» it said. Another rental car company, Sixt, made a similar crack in a newspaper insert telling Hollande: «Mr President, next time avoid the scooter. Sixt rents cars with tinted windows.» The company, which is headquartered in Germany, is known for picking on French presidents. It also had a go at Hollande’s diminutive predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy, after he divorced his wife and married actress, singer and fashion model Carla Bruni. «Do like Mrs Bruni and opt for a small French model,» it told customers in a German ad. Online dating site Be2 tapped into sympathy for Hollande’s partner Valerie Trierweiler. «Dear Valerie, the time to change is now,» it said on its homepage. Virgin Radio for its part compared the president’s motorbike helmet to those worn by French electronic music duo Daft Punk. «Mr President, we know you’re a fan. Daft Punk is on the Virgin Radio playlist,» it said.

International News… UNDER THE CARRIBEAN SUN Two 16-year-olds who ran away from a top British boarding school have been found safe and well in the Dominican Republic. Edward Bunyan and Indira Gainiyeva disappeared from the highly-regarded Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, northwest England, on January 13. They took a taxi to Manchester Airport, swapping the English winter weather for the Caribbean sun. A Lancashire Police spokesman said: «The students have thankfully been located safe and well at a hotel in the Punta Cana area of the Dominican Republic,» a beach resort popular with tourists.
WHEN VODKA BECOME A POLITICAL AFFAIR Actor Hugh Laurie prompted an outcry in Russia with a Twitter proposal to boycott vodka : «I’d boycott Russian goods if I could think of a single thing they made besides the rest of the world depressed. Russian vodka is OK if you need to clean the oven. For drinking, it must henceforth be Polish.» Laurie said he was reacting after reading Putin’s comments that gay people should «leave children alone». But his boycott suggestion became one of the most discussed topics on Russian-language Twitter. «Hugh forgot one thing: Russian money could very easily boycott him,» said journalist Stepan Chaushyan.

ONLINE PAYMENT FOR YOUR CAR TAX The payment campaign for the tax on motor vehicles has started on Thursday, Jan. 2nd, it will end as planned on March 31st. From now on, no need to queue to pay your car tax, no more sticker to stick to your vehicle. From January 15th, 2014, you can pay your car tax online 24/7 by going directly to the collectivity’s website: www.comstbarth.fr . In the beginning of 2014, all the services of the collectivity are improved. The arrival of new technologies and modernization initiated by the administration are improving this progress every day. As a consequence, the Road Traffic Service opens «the ballet of e-administration» with TIPI, the Cashing Service of Titles via Internet with online payment of vehicle tax for 2014. No more sticker... TIPI (Title Payable via Internet), as it is called, is a secure online payment of certain taxes on the territory of the collectivity, in particular online payment for your CAR TAX: this is a fast, simple and secure service for everyone. TRAFFIC IN FLAMANDS From Monday, January 20th, 2014 until Tuesday, January 28th, 2014 included, the traffic of all vehicles will be on one half of the road # 210 in Flamands, because of construction.
