Daily News… SPANIARDS PAY LAST RESPECTS TO FLAMENCO STAR DE LUCIA Spaniards from all walks of life flocked as devoted fans to a Madrid music hall on Friday to pay their final respects to flamenco guitar virtuoso Paco de Lucia. A stream of visitors ranging from politicians and music stars to ordinary citizens who only knew him from afar streamed past his closed coffin laid out on stage. «He was a genius, a genius in all aspects. In the way he composed, in the way he innovated, in everything,» said Pedro Benitez, 45, a lifelong fan who was the first in the line of people waiting in silence to pay their respects. «He is a Mozart of our times,» added Benitez as he stood at the entrance to the venue beside his wife Maria, who arrived there at 7:30 am to hold their place in the queue. Born Francisco Sanchez Gomez, the guitarist died of a heart attack aged 66 on Tuesday after feeling unwell while playing football on a beach with his eight-year-old son near the Caribbean resort of Playa del Carmen. His body arrived in Madrid on Friday and the coffin was displayed at the red-brick National Auditorium of Music for four hours. It was to be taken to his home town of Algeciras for a public wake overnight and burial Saturday. «Art unites people and this man was a flag-bearer of art. What’s more he went over all the world,» said Diego Moreno, a middle-aged man from Algeciras who wore a black bowler hat, queueing to pass by the casket. «So any of us who consider ourselves in the slightest bit artists have to be here. It is an obligation,» he added. Culture Minister Jose Ignacio Wert said the huge numbers of people who turned out to bid farewell to the musician showed «the immense affection» Spaniards had for him. «He has always been an ambassador of Spanish culture, a master, someone who took flamenco to the end of the world,» the minister said as he arrived at the music hall.

International News… ‘DEAD’ MAN WAKES UP A 78-year-old American man who was declared dead and taken to a funeral home dramatically woke up as he was about to be embalmed. Walter Williams was registered dead on Wednesday evening after medics failed to find his pulse. He was transported to the Porters and Sons Funeral Home in Lexington, Mississippi. However, a few hours later when workers were about to prepare his corpse they noticed Williams moving in his body bag. «He was not dead, long story short,» funeral home manager Byron Porter told, noting that he had never seen anything like it before.
PRISON MASSAGES Two female prison workers have been fired for compelling inmates at the facility to give them massages. The women, employees at a men’s prison in the port city of Guayaquil, were found out when security cameras captured one of them reclining, receiving a foot and shoulder massage from an inmate. The two employees, an educator and a social worker, made a habit of pressing inmates to give them massages. Ledy Zuniga, head of the federal office which oversees Ecuador’s prisons, told local television that the practice would not be tolerated as it «compels favors, then leads to corruption.»

Reefer Surf Club of AJOE The Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Posca will start with a brand new step on February 28th, March 1st and 2nd 2014 in Saint Barthélemy in the Caribbean. In association with Rip Curl St Barth and Reefer Surf Club of Ajoe.
In Europe, thanks to its partners, Smith, Gorilla, FCS and Posca, the edition 2014will host 1500 young surfers and surfers under 16 years-old in 14 competitions in France, Spain, Portugal and England. But also for the first time in the history of this event, in Holland and Italy. What’s the Gromsearch ? Rip Curl GromSearch started in Australia in 1999, offering the chance for young surfers under 16 years-old (girls and boys), to express their talents in an atmosphere of relaxed and friendly competition. Now in Europe for several years, the circuit GromSearch showed incredible talent in Europe as Leonardo Fioravanti (Italy), Francisco Alves (Portugal) or Cinnamon Bulard (Reunion island) and more recently Tim Bisso (West Indies). In each edition, Rip Curl invites winners under 16 years-old from each country to the « Grand European Finale» Somewhere… The location of the final is revealed at the last moment and decided based on wave conditions and weather. It takes place during the Thanksgiving holiday. The winners of the European Cup final will have the immense privilege to meet their counterparts from other regions where the same circuit also takes place (Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, USA…). In 2015, these young

talents will have the chance to compete on a mythical wave that will be revealed at the last moment. The GromSearch allowed current surfing stars such as Stephanie Gilmore, Matt Wilkinson, Gabriel Medina, Sally Fitzgibbons or Alana Blanchard and Tyler Wright, to become famous. Fifty percent of the winners are currently on the World Tour. Who will be next on the list ? On Saturday, March 1st at 7:30pm, the meeting is organized in Lorient in front of the surf shack to attend the screening on the beach and on a big screen, feet in the sand, of the new film « mising « of the 2014Surf World Champion Mick Fanning.
