PUBLISHER’S LETTER: 2020

Could this be CGN’s publisher, Ginny Van Alyea?

The caption for the photo shown on the left reads, “Ginny made a fool of herself in the art gallery by admiring the fire alarm.” A friend gave it to me as a custom birthday card several years ago, and I have it framed and hanging in my office, mostly because it makes me laugh, but also because it’s a reminder that the art world can seem so intimidating to some people that they never fully explore it. For more than 35 years CGN’s mission has been to poke holes in that very perception. Art is about looking, which is why CGN truly wants readers to know that they are always invited to view art and to ask questions about it, and they are encouraged to seek out those who make art as well as champion it.

There are currently many situations in our society where people worry about being perceived the wrong way or that what they think may be unpopular. As far as art is concerned, the enigmatic market influences of money, taste, and access can, understandably, lead people to assume that eye-popping auction prices or art fair name dropping mean that the average person could make a fool of himself if they don’t have the right knowledge or connections. I’ve been part of this community since 2002, and I’m honestly still figuring it out. Plenty of things, places and people continue to intimidate me, but I am committed to continually learning about what I like and don’t like as well as what’s current, even when it makes me feel uncomfortable or awkward. Ultimately, my experience, beyond market headlines and in the real world, is among a community of earnest and welcoming artists, dealers and collectors eager to connect through art, regardless of how it is personally interpreted. I’ve become more confident that it doesn’t matter so much what I think, relative to the prevailing consensus, but it matters that I observe and participate, and that I don’t hide out. I don’t even have to wear all black! The Art Institute of Chicago’s fall 2019 exhibition spanning decades of Andy Warhol’s career demonstrated that artists often see things before others, and we can be the beneficiaries of knowledge offered through their vision. Warhol elevated the mundane to art. He also knew that what you see matters as much as being seen. We live in an intensely visual culture. Nearly everyone today has the tools to create and share their own images, while messages are relayed more rapidly and subject to the collective culture of ‘likes.’ It’s important to see art in person and for yourself – whether in a gallery, museum, or sculpture park – in order to take a break from the content bombardment and to participate in a deeper visual conversation. This is the fouth edition of our CGN Arts Guide, a 164 page invitation to go see art for yourself all year long, from Andy Warhol, to the artist who isn’t a household name yet. Maybe admiring that fire alarm – whatever form it takes – means I am not a fool, I am just slowing down to notice something in an every day detail. After all, everyone is a work in progress. – Ginny Van Alyea 21

During Claude Monet’s lifetime, Chicago was the American city that most aggressively acquired his work. This exhibition is the first to explore Chicago’s pioneering connection to the great Impressionist artist. Among the more than 65 paintings—from the Art Institute’s holdings and Chicago-based collections—are beloved major works as well as rarely seen still lifes, figural scenes, seascapes, and landscapes.

CARL HAMMER GALLERY

RIVER NORTH

Carl Hammer Gallery represents both modern and contemporary art from the 20th and 21st centuries. The gallery’s reputation, recognized worldwide, was established by its leadership for discovering and representing historically significant artists within the “Outsider” and self–taught genres. Today, artists from both the “Monster Roster” and the Chicago “Imagist” traditions are an integral part of the gallery’s programming. Renowned for this unique blending of artists, visions and backgrounds, Carl Hammer Gallery has carved out a unique niche among 21st century contemporary art galleries and is known for having pioneered much of the scholarship and connoisseurship leading to inclusion of Outsider artists like Henry Darger, Bill Traylor, Joseph Yoakum, Eugene Von Bruenchenhein and others into international art importance. The dialogue between mainstream and Outsider artists is influential in determination of both our exhibition criteria and artist representation. ALAN KOPPEL GALLERY

RIVER NORTH

For nearly two decades, Alan Koppel Gallery has played a leading role in introducing contemporary international artists to American audiences. In addition to organizing extensive solo and group exhibitions of new work by gallery artists, the gallery maintains an inventory of select primary and secondary works by leading artists from the major movements in 20th Century American and European Art. Artists to first exhibit with us in Chicago include renown artists such as Robert Moskowitz, Bruce Conner and Jacques Villeglé, younger artists like Edward Lipski and Katharina Bosse, and the estate of Eugéne Leroy. In the mid-1990s, Alan Koppel’s successful private gallery turned public with the opening of his first space in Chicago’s John Hancock Center where the first solo exhibition was new work by Peter Halley. In 2001, the gallery moved and expanded its presence to a 4,000 square foot gallery in Chicago’s River North gallery district. The inaugural blockbuster exhibition paired new work by Jacques Villeglé with furniture by Jean Prouve. Past exhibitions include new work by artists Halley, Leroy, Villeglé, Lipski and Bosse, as well as shows highlighting recent acquisitions by Hiroshi Sugimoto, Vik Muniz, Philip Guston, Diane Arbus, Mark Tansey, Louise Bourgeois, Marcel Duchamp, Hans Bellmer, Robert Frank, Walker Evans, Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha. In 2012 the gallery moved to its current Dearborn Street location, transforming a turn-of-the-century greystone into an intimate gallery space dedicated to showcasing significant artworks from the 20th and 21st century.

JACQUELINE MOSES

Texas: Border Patrol, 2030

Recent world and personal events have strongly influenced the content of my work. Technical developments and alterations have had a strong influence on our lives and ways of living. The use of robots to replace human workers is one result of these changes. The imagery presented in my paintings is reflective of our times, as is the technique used. Many works are a combination of photographic transfers and oil on canvas. All are derived from my photography and are juxtaposed to create the desired image.

THE RENAISSANCE SOCIETY

HYDE PARK

The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago presents contemporary art exhibitions, events, and publications. “The Ren”—as we are known by many—is an independent, non-collecting museum driven by an uncompromising commitment to artists and their ideas. We offer artists the time, space, resources, and freedom that are vital for ambitious experimentation and risk-taking. Our work with artists frequently results in newly commissioned art, and their presentations in our 3,000 square foot gallery spur further scholarly and creative reflections in our publications and public programs. Visitors to the Ren find a uniquely intimate platform for encountering artistic expressions that give form to, challenge, and complicate currents in contemporary thought. Events—including artist talks, lectures, screenings, concerts, readings, and more—offer further opportunities for discovery and discussion.

LILY PAD GALLERY WEST

Wisconsin: MILWAUKEE

Lily Pad Gallery West provides the finest quality realism, naturalism, impressionism, and abstract works of art. With over 200 works of art from 70 distinct artists, the gallery brings quality art from modern contemporary to art reminiscent of 19th century French and Dutch Masters. Owners Alan Perlstein and Terry Hamann decided to open Lily Pad Gallery West in Milwaukee in early 2015. Longtime appreciators of art, they started as collectors 40 years ago, with limited funds but a passion for art. Perlstein and Hamann’s friend and partner, Wivi-Anne Weber, had a great gallery in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, called Lily Pad Gallery, which the couple had supported for over 20 years as collectors. They decided they’d love to open a sister gallery in Milwaukee, which is how Lily Pad Gallery West came to be. Four times a year, the third weekend in January, April, July, and October, the city of Milwaukee hosts a city-wide gallery hop event called Gallery Night MKE. Lily Pad West participates in these events with an artist in residence for the weekend, a temporary showcase exhibition, and new work from many of our 70 distinct artists.

STUDIO 215 Studio 215 offers professional art instruction at affordable prices. The classes are taught by Sarah Kaiser-Amaral, a professionally-trained artist with an MFA from the University of Chicago (2003), and over 15 years of college-level teaching experience. Classes offered include figure drawing and painting, oil painting, watercolor painting, beginning drawing, and private lessons. Studio 215 is located in the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, an historic Daniel Burnham building in the heart of Evanston near the purple line and the Northwestern University campus.

CHICAGO SCULPTURE EXHIBIT (CSE)

• GROUPS/ASSOC.

Founded in 2001 as the Lincoln Park Community Art Initiative, this project was created by then Alderman Vi Daley to enhance and enrich the neighborhood by publicly exhibiting works of local sculptors. Over the past 18 years, the program has grown from eight sculptures the first year, to 59 sculptures in 2019. Installations can be seen as far north as Edgewater and Edgebrook, as far south as Back of the Yards and the Major Taylor Bike Trail, from the lakefront on the east, to the Lawndale, Humboldt Park, and Avondale neighborhoods on the west. CSE is proud to boast that artists come from every corner of the U.S., and this year celebrated the first international artist in the show, from Colombia, South America. All of the installations are outdoors where they are on temporary display for one year, and are returned to the artists at the completion of the show. For anyone interested in learning more about the artists or about a particular piece in the Exhibit, or in buying one of the sculptures at the close of the show, CSE is happy to provide contact information. Many of the artists also work in other media and can scale to size if the sculptures are too large for personal consideration. The Chicago Sculpture Exhibit is an Illinois not-for-profit corporation funded by charitable contributions from both the private and public sectors. Success is possible thanks to the many sponsors including neighborhood organizations, chambers of commerce, local businesses, individual residents, and cultural institutions. Their dedication to improving Chicago communities through public art is the heart of this program. Thank you to the artists, sponsors, partners, and contributors, whose assistance and support make CSE possible. Chicago’s communities are that much stronger because of their participation. Visit the Chicago Sculpture Exhibit website and download the Otocast app to find out more about each artist and the locations of all the installations in the neighborhoods. Please enjoy this opportunity to experience these 3D sculptures that capture the imagination and allow us to marvel at the intersection of engineering and art.
