PUBLISHER’S LETTER: 2023
My seven-yearold son thinks it’s fun to sit on my lap and use my computer, currently to browse for LEGO sets, while I am on deadline.
When I was working on this issue he looked at a page spread and asked why I had to make the magazine again if I’d already done it last year. (He also asks why I have to stay up so late.) I explained him that every year we have to update information from the year before. In a 168-page book filled with details, it’s important to stay up-to-date. Happy with my answer, we played spot-the-difference in these CGN pages and delayed LEGO shopping a little longer.
So much changes in a year–particularly in children, of course, but also the communities we spend time in. In our fall 2022 issue we spoke with many local art leaders, who each shared what the energy of Chicago’s 1980s art scene was like when CGN began as a four-page guide to the exhibitions and openings of 16 galleries in a single neighborhood, River North. In 2023 galleries continue to migrate to, or open in, new locations throughout the city; amidst an online world, physically relocating in proximity to other galleries fosters new art centers. West Town has established itself as a robust art district in just a few years. Creativity also thrives in Pilsen, Bridgeport, Ravenswood and Logan Square. We welcome galleries and museums from all corners of the city, as well as
Wisconsin, Southwest Michigan and, for the first time, Iowa. CGN’s history is definitely in Chicago, but I’m thrilled to follow this regional art expansion and appreciation that came out of our pandemic-grounding. It’s wonderful to be able to travel and explore the world once more, but there is so much art and creativity to enjoy close to home too.
We celebrated CGN’s 40th anniversary this past fall, and this is the 7th edition of our annual Arts Guide. Introducing the guide was a big change for us in 2017. Now it feels familiar. I think when updates are done correctly, you may not even spot the difference, it just seems like something’s always been there, just right. Though formats, schedules, information, addresses and details may change over time, the search for understanding in art is ongoing and constant.
I often think about how to best balance history, legacy and change at CGN. So far that has been to remain in print and serve as a consistent publication of record, while also maintaining a comprehensive digital means of following art. CGN will always aim to be a positive and informative resource for collectors, artists, galleries, students and others who love art. We strive to keep up with the changes and cover the best of what’s happening in Chicago, and well beyond.
Please enjoy this 2023 issue of CGN’s annual Arts Guide. Like each one before, it is the best one yet, but there are more to come.

There are also shows yet to be announced in the 100+ galleries listed in CGN.
SALVADOR DALÍ: THE IMAGE DISAPPEARS
Focusing on the pivotal decade of the 1930s, when Salvador Dalí emerged as the inventor of his own personal brand of Surrealism, this exhibition of 25 paintings, drawings, and surrealist objects considers Dalí’s work in light of two defining, if contradictory, impulses: an immense desire for visibility and the urge to disappear.

RUTH DUCKWORTH: LIFE AS A UNITY
This monographic exhibition—the first since a 2006 retrospective—makes use of art historical advances of the last several decades to examine Duckworth’s Chicago work in a new light. Duckworth referred to herself not as a potter or ceramicist, but as a sculptor with clay. The exhibition takes her at her word, foregrounding her sculptural production. Ruth Duckworth: Life as a Unity is part of Art Design Chicago, an initiative of the Terra Foundation for American Art.

CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE BIENNIAL
The Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB) is dedicated to creating an international forum on architecture and urbanism. CAB’s signature program stands as North America’s largest international survey of contemporary architecture, taking place every two years at the Chicago Cultural Center and sites across the city. CAB programming throughout the year engages global audiences. The Chicago-based collective Floating Museum takes the helm as the artistic team of CAB 5.

JESSI REAVES: ALL POSSESSIVE LUSTS DISPELLED
Reaves combines iconic modernist design with an irreverent aesthetic in sculpture that toys with functionality. Reaves often begins with found furniture, which she dismantles, converts, remakes, enhances, pads, and embellishes in ways that still allow the suggestion of physical contact or use. By breaking things open, she proposes that they be examined visually and in terms of their purpose in life. The exhibition at The Arts Club of Chicago centers on the work Personal Heat, 2021, a deconstructed étagère with accompanying video that explores themes of renovation and rebellion. The sculptural aspect features a pop punk aesthetic of hot pink animal stripes, as if Reaves had been locked in a room in her great aunt’s house with a can of paint, a saw, and some wood glue.

HECTOR GUIMARD: ART NOUVEAU TO MODERNISM
This exhibition explores the life and work of Hector Guimard (1867-1942), the French architect and designer whose name is synonymous with the French Art Nouveau movement. Bringing together furniture and design objects including jewelry, metalwork, ceramics, drawings, and textiles from collections worldwide, this is the first major American museum exhibition devoted to Guimard since 1970.
Guimard is best known for his designs for the Paris Métro entrances, but the exhibition aims to explore lesser-known aspects of the designer’s life.

OPENING RECEPTIONS
Opening night receptions traditionally take place on the first night of a new exhibition. Some galleries now have longer, open house style hours, while others open for a couple of evening hours, often with the artist present. While many openings happen in district clusters on a coordinated evening, on most weekends there is an opening happening somewhere, so be sure to check Chicagogallerynews.com often to find out what’s newly on view as well as what to look forward to.
KEY DATES
The art world follows a seasonal rhythm, whether in Chicago or elsewhere. Openings kick off in early January, then again in April during EXPO ART WEEK, followed by mid-summer walks in June and July, the start of the fall season in September, and typically early November before a break for Miami art fairs as we head into the holidays. In Southwest Michigan and Wisconsin during the summer high-season many popular vacation destinations offer art weekends and special events worth traveling for.

CHICAGO TRUBORN
Est in 2011, Chicago Truborn is a non–traditional gallery dedicated to supporting both emerging and established artists, with an emphasis on street art/graffiti. The gallery is known for showcasing affordable artwork in an approachable environment.
Chicago Truborn has repeatedly earned the title of “Chicago’s Best Gallery”. A defining feature of the gallery lies within the two site-specific murals that are painted with every new exhibition. This transforms the space and also allows viewers to actively experience each new show. Additionally, creating murals within the same space as the studio work allows the artist to express themself in a more robust way than the traditional gallery format can.
The gallery also plays a vital role in public art and mural production. Gallery director Sara Dulkin has been instrumental in Chicago’s public arts renaissance as a curator on projects like the Wabash Arts Corridor, the West Town Public Arts Initiative, and Tri-Taylor’s “Chicago’s Most Instagrammable Alley”.

INTUIT: THE CENTER FOR INTUITIVE & OUTSIDER ART
Intuit champions diverse artistic voices and pathways, inviting all to explore the power of outsider art. Founded in 1991, Intuit is a premier museum of outsider and self-taught art, defined as work created by artists who faced marginalization, overcame personal odds to make their artwork, or who didn’t, or sometimes couldn’t, follow a traditional path of art making, often using materials at hand to realize their artistic vision. By presenting a diversity of artistic voices, Intuit builds a bridge from art to audience. The museum’s mission is grounded in the ethos that powerful art can be found in unexpected places and made by unexpected creators.
Intuit offers world-class exhibitions; a collection of 1,300 artworks; the Henry Darger Room; resources for scholars and students, such as the Robert A. Roth Study Center; and educational programs for people of all interest levels and backgrounds.

ALAN KOPPEL GALLERY
For nearly two decades, Alan Koppel Gallery has played a leading role in introducing contemporary international artists to American audiences. In addition to organizing extensive solo and group exhibitions of new work by gallery artists, the gallery maintains an inventory of select primary and secondary works by leading artists from the major movements in 20th Century American and European Art. Artists to first exhibit with us in Chicago include renown artists such as Robert Moskowitz, Bruce Conner and Jacques Villeglé, younger artists like Edward Lipski and Katharina Bosse, and the estate of Eugéne Leroy.
In the mid-1990s, Alan Koppel’s successful private gallery turned public with the opening of his first space in Chicago’s John Hancock Center where the first solo exhibition was new work by Peter Halley. In 2001, the gallery moved and expanded its presence to a 4,000 square foot gallery in Chicago’s River North gallery district. The inaugural blockbuster exhibition paired new work by Jacques Villeglé with furniture by Jean Prouve. Past exhibitions include new work by artists Halley, Leroy, Villeglé, Lipski and Bosse, as well as shows highlighting recent acquisitions by Hiroshi Sugimoto, Vik Muniz, Philip Guston, Diane Arbus, Mark Tansey, Louise Bourgeois, Marcel Duchamp, Hans Bellmer, Robert Frank, Walker Evans, Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha.
In 2012 the gallery moved to its current Dearborn Street location, transforming a turn-of-the-century greystone into an intimate gallery space dedicated to showcasing significant artworks from the 20th and 21st century.

THE RICHARD H. DRIEHAUS MUSEUM
The Richard H. Driehaus Museum engages and inspires the global community through exploration and ongoing conversations in art, architecture, and design of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Its permanent collection and temporary exhibitions are presented in an immersive experience within the restored Samuel Mayo Nickerson Mansion, completed in 1883, at the height of the Gilded Age. The Museum’s collection reflects and is inspired by the collecting interests, vision, and focus of its founder, the late Richard H. Driehaus.
The Museum is located just steps from the Magnificent Mile. The exquisite building was saved twice, first by a collective of over 100 Chicago citizens in 1919, and then by philanthropist Richard H. Driehaus, who sponsored its restoration from 2003-2008.

FLXST CONTEMPORARY
FLXST Contemporary is a fine art gallery in the Motor Row District of Chicago. We exhibit exceptional artwork by emerging and mid-career artists. We also support and bring visibility to historically underrepresented artists. The artists the gallery shows work across all media and unabashedly locate themselves in BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and immigrant/diasporic communities in Chicago and other parts of the world. The spontaneity, humor, and critical projects that brought artists together from the U.S. and abroad during Fluxus Movement (the 1960s-70s) inspired the gallery’s name.
Since 2019, FLXST Contemporary has maintained an interdisciplinary, intersectional, and international art program, attracting the support of art patrons and art institutions worldwide. The roster of artists the gallery officially represents continues to grow, and so does the gallery’s footprint in the art world. The principles of transparency and equity in the art world have always shaped the gallery’s art program and the internal workings of the gallery since its founding. In addition to providing artists with well-deserved visibility in the commercial art landscape, the small team at FLXST Contemporary has integrated professional development as a critical component of working with artists through ongoing conversations and critiques. We work tirelessly for the success of all artists with the mission to amplify their artistic practices as intellectually and as accessibly as possible.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MEXICAN ART
The National Museum of Mexican Art defines Mexican culture as sin fronteras (without borders), and our programs and exhibitions capture the wide range of Mexican cultural expressions and art forms, from ancient to modern and on both sides of the border. We represent Mexican art and culture from our own point of view and in our own voice.
We believe in art as a bridge between communities, and we believe that art in education expands minds and breaks down barriers while preserving cultural heritages. The National Museum of Mexican Art offers a wide range of educational programs for children and families, teens, school groups, and educators.
From building a world-class institution in Chicago’s largely Mexican American neighborhood of Pilsen to creating groundbreaking exhibitions, the National Museum of Mexican Art has a history of being bold and activist in our approach and reach.

Specializing in Art on Paper
In 2001 the Lincoln Park Community Art Initiative was founded by former Alderman Vi Daley, and eight public sculptures were prominently displayed throughout Lincoln Park. With dedication, incredible artists, caring sponsors, and a passion to showcase public art in our neighborhoods, the program was transformed into the Chicago Sculpture Exhibit (CSE). For the past 21 years, this program has pursued its mission to install large-scale sculptures in neighborhoods throughout the city. CSE is proud to say that we have 43 sculptures in this year’s show, and we’ve installed a total of 600 sculptures to date!
We would like to thank our artists, sponsors, partners, contributors, neighborhood organizations, chambers of commerce, local businesses, individual residents, and cultural institutions whose assistance and support make CSE possible. Your dedication to improving our Chicago communities through public art is the heart of this program and we greatly appreciate your support.
CSE continues to offer a safe experience discovering public art that dot the myriad communities throughout Chicago. These magnificent sculptures bring communities together and spark the inner creativity in all of us to explore, imagine, inspire and marvel at the intersection of engineering and art. For anyone interested in learning more about the artists, a particular piece in the Exhibit, or in purchasing one of the sculptures at the close of the show, we are happy to provide more information. Please consider making a donation to CSE, and/or sponsoring a sculpture.
Each year it is an honor to share this unique exhibit with Chicago, and we look forward to many more years of showcasing public art with you.
We invite you to please visit our website, www.chicagosculptureexhibit.org, and social media channels. Also download the free Otocast app to find out more about each artist and their locations.
Remember, ADMISSION IS FREE.
