PUBLISHER’S LETTER: 2021 My 2020 Publisher’s letter talked about how intimidating it can be to visit a gallery. 2020 was going to be all about in person engagement with art, and people. Well, what a difference a year makes.

What is there to worry about?

I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to a new year more than I do now. That 2021 is finally here feels like a miracle, and so does the fact that CGN is still here too. The prospect of another fresh start, and our 5th annual Arts Guide, has made me reflect on what opportunities and realizations have come out of a scary and exhausting year.

I told an art colleague last spring that my conversations about the art world used to be so hopeful. He pointed out that something good and needed could come out of all of this. A reset will be OK. Several months later, I see that the absence of the mad– rush that was all around many of us pre–pandemic has at least given me the gift to re-focus. For CGN that means continuing to show collectors and others the art that’s in our community today and to share artists’ stories. It turns out a stay-at-home can’t lock down creativity or wipe out connection. It’s just the Grinch. Christmas comes anyway, stripped down to the essence it once was. You can close the museums and cancel the parties, but artists will still have something to say. I’ve heard from artists who’ve been busier than ever, with more time to work uninterrupted, and with more urgent messages to share. Undoubtedly there are struggles and personal losses, as well as missed opportunities and lost income. There are many artists, gallerists, and arts professionals who need your support. I try to remember that out of a bust can come a boom. Art is still our window to a world that’s changing faster than we can fathom, and art’s powerful, enduring messages may be found on boarded up windows, on streets that can’t really be shut. CGN’s summer 2020 issue, printed during the height of the spring lockdown, felt like a Hail Mary. This Arts Guide is hopefully more of a game plan for how to ride out the coming year and come out the other side better and even more grateful than before. I know you’ve each met your own challenges and upheavals that were not in the plan for 2020. I turned 40 during the collective freak-out of last spring. Instead of celebrating as planned, I learned how to sew face masks and home school, while supervising hand washing and worrying about my family as well as our art community. I’ve said to myself these past months, ‘You can’t worry about what you can’t control’ and, ‘The only way out is through.’ My favorite singer is the late, great diva Aretha Franklin. Her spontaneous words of wisdom, from a 1971 live performance in San Francisco, are posted above my desk: “Don’t put worry on you before worry gets to you. You’d be surprised what big bridges you can meet when you get there.” While I cannot see what will happen in 2021, I can hope. And I will try not to worry. – Ginny Van Alyea, CGN Publisher 15

THE YEAR’S CULTURE LIST 2020 saw swaths of carefully planned exhibitions cancelled. Several of those shows have been moved to 2021 and will take place alongside other dynamic shows opening around the city and surrounding area. At press time, full calendars for the year ahead were not yet available. We expect the exhibitions highlighted here to open on schedule and in person, or virtually if needed, but please check with each institution and space prior to visiting. Visit chicagogallerynews.com for highlights and previews throughout the year.

CHRISTINA QUARLES Christina Quarles’s ambiguous and evocative scenes feature figures whose limbs, torsos, and faces collide and merge with familiar domestic objects made strange through her color choices and experimental painterly gestures. The MCA brings together a selection of her work made over the last three years, as well as a new, large-scale installation. April 17–August 29, 2021 Museum of Contemporary Art • mcachicago.org

Christina Quarles, Can Yew Feel? Tha Days Are Gettin’ Shorter, 2018. Acrylic on canvas. 60×48×1” © Christina Quarles, Courtesy of the artist, Regen Projects, Los Angeles, and Pilar Corrias Gallery, London

The lush, overdetermined spaces in Hurvin Anderson’s new paintings reference touristic sites of simultaneous development and dereliction in Jamaica, his ancestral home. For the exhibition at The Arts Club of Chicago, Anderson pairs this new work with earlier paintings from his acclaimed Barbershop series, for which he won a nomination for the Turner Prize in 2017. TAKE CARE: EXPERT TIPS FOR MAINTAINING A COLLECTION People are still buying art, in spite of 2020’s challenges, and often in new ways. With this in mind I reached out to a few art world colleagues to ask what advice they would give to collectors when it comes to maintaining a collection and ensuring that it too weathers present and future storms. Each offered their expert tips and case studies for proper care of an art collection as well as what they consider to be overlooked aspects of maintaining it.

to any insurance provided. Have UCC filings (Uniform Commercial Code) on any art that is consigned, no matter how reputable the seller appears. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that the worst may happen, even when it seems unimaginable.

View CGN’s art service listings, starting on page 124, for more collection resources. – GV

PREPARE MORE THAN YOU THINK YOU HAVE TO.

Suzanne Lovell framed the works in this oceanfront home in ways to protect them from potentially harsh natural elements.

WHAT’S AROUND THE ART IS AS IMPORTANT AS THE ART

New collectors are sometimes overwhelmed and should not neglect the essentials in risk management:

SUZANNE LOVELL – Suzanne Lovell Inc.; Lovell Art Advisory

• Insure with an insurer who understands art and offers broad coverages such as loss in value and protection for changes in market value. The greatest risk to art is not when it is displayed at home but rather in transit and in storage. Be sure art is properly packed and stored.

• Select proper framing specifications for your art – museum quality glazing, for example, will allow the viewer to enjoy the artwork with minimal glare, and provide the best protection for the longevity of the piece. Always select archival framing to museum quality standards.

• Don’t assume the art is covered when consigning work for sale. Your own insurance should be secondary

• We commissioned Blow Up #7 by Ori Gersht for a collector’s oceanfront home. The C-print is mounted to

dibond, and the glazing is Optium museum acrylic in a custom black maple frame. The home environment is monitored to maintain proper and consistent humidity and temperature, and protective UV film is applied throughout the residence. Close the drapery when possible. • Maintain private access to your collection inventory and original records, with a digital copy available to share.

STAY UP–TO–DATE JOSEPH STANFIELD – Hindman Don’t overlook considering the value of works in your collection. Tastes are always changing and artists are constantly being re-evaluated. The value of certain works may increase a considerable amount and it may be time to discuss potentially selling works while the market is hot or update your insurance appraisal to reflect the most current values.

CLEAN YOUR ART DENNIS CALLAHAN – Callahan Art & Assoc. • Proper and regular dusting is simple and essential. Accumulated dust in conjunction with humidity develops into an aggregate which requires more force and specialized treatments to remove. • Watch the humidity. Ideally you want 50%. Too little can cause objects to shrink, crack, and dry out. Too much causes art to swell, grow mold, and corrode.

Kerry James Marshall, Past Times, 1997, acrylic and collage on unstretched canvas. The work is pictured when it was installed at McCormick Place prior to being sold at auction in 2018.

• As electronic media become more common collectors need to realize that they require ongoing, scheduled maintenance to run properly. Dan Flavin’s sculptures require replacement of bulbs & ballasts; Naim June Paik’s sculptures require new tubes and coils. Computers, monitors, and hard drives (copied and replaced) should be inspected every 7 years. • When we were the contracted Art Handlers for the collection at McCormick Place, they had a fantastic Kerry James Marshall work (Past Times) displayed in a very public space. Every month we checked on it, dusting and looking for any damage. Every year we appraised it for insurance purposes while the value quietly rose. Millions of people walked by it every year. Eventually it was loaned out for a major exhibition of the artist’s work. Before leaving, a Condition Report was executed, and it was found to be in excellent condition, despite its public placement. It sold shortly thereafter for over $21,000,000, due in part because of its condition. Had it suffered any damage, as many works in public spaces do, its value would have been diminished. 19

CHICAGO TRUBORN

WEST TOWN

Formally established in 2011, Chicago Truborn is a non–traditional gallery dedicated to supporting, often neglected, mediums of artistic creation with an emphasis on street/urban/graffiti. The gallery is known for providing collectors with affordable artwork in an approachable environment without sacrificing quality. Chicago Truborn works with local and international artists – predominantly those who paint with aerosol. At every exhibition’s opening, the featured artist paints two (site specific) murals – in store – to coincide with their body of work. This is just one contributing factor in having been repeatedly awarded the title “Best Gallery”. Chicago Truborn’s reputation has grown immensely through its vital role in the public arts scene and continued dedication to mural production. Gallery owner and mural facilitator Sara Dulkin has been instrumental in Chicago’s public arts renaissance as co-curator on projects like the Wabash Arts Corridor and the West Town Public Arts Initiative. Having curated and site managed over 50 public pieces in Chicago alone, Ms. Dulkin has partnered with numerous neighborhood groups as well as larger organizations such as the Chicago Bears & Nike. Enjoying artwork should not be intimidating, nor an experience reserved for the upper class. Please come in, ask questions, take pictures and #BecomeAcollector 1741 W. GOLDFINCH

GARFIELD PARK

Goldfinch is a commercial gallery that seeks to provide compelling physical, conceptual, and discursive frameworks for artists and contemporary visual practices. We do this through our exhibitions, artists’ talks, informal salon discussions, and publications. Located in East Garfield Park, Goldfinch is surrounded by dozens of artists’ studios. In keeping with this context, we strive to bring an experimental, studio-like sense of curiosity and play to our exhibition program. Goldfinch’s Flatfiles program aims to make original contemporary artworks available to a wider audience. It encompasses painting, drawing, collage, prints, photographs, mixed media pieces and any other flat work that can be housed in the drawers of our flatfile cabinet, the vast majority of which are priced at $1,500 or below — and many can be acquired for $500 or less. Works in the Flatfiles can be viewed online or by advance appointment during our open hours (Fridays and Saturdays 12–4pm when exhibitions are on view), and we are always happy to arrange alternative viewing appointments at your convenience.

ALAN KOPPEL GALLERY

RIVER NORTH

For nearly two decades, Alan Koppel Gallery has played a leading role in introducing contemporary international artists to American audiences. In addition to organizing extensive solo and group exhibitions of new work by gallery artists, the gallery maintains an inventory of select primary and secondary works by leading artists from the major movements in 20th Century American and European Art. Artists to first exhibit with us in Chicago include renown artists such as Robert Moskowitz, Bruce Conner and Jacques Villeglé, younger artists like Edward Lipski and Katharina Bosse, and the estate of Eugéne Leroy. In the mid-1990s, Alan Koppel’s successful private gallery turned public with the opening of his first space in Chicago’s John Hancock Center where the first solo exhibition was new work by Peter Halley. In 2001, the gallery moved and expanded its presence to a 4,000 square foot gallery in Chicago’s River North gallery district. The inaugural blockbuster exhibition paired new work by Jacques Villeglé with furniture by Jean Prouve. Past exhibitions include new work by artists Halley, Leroy, Villeglé, Lipski and Bosse, as well as shows highlighting recent acquisitions by Hiroshi Sugimoto, Vik Muniz, Philip Guston, Diane Arbus, Mark Tansey, Louise Bourgeois, Marcel Duchamp, Hans Bellmer, Robert Frank, Walker Evans, Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha. In 2012 the gallery moved to its current Dearborn Street location, transforming a turn-of-the-century greystone into an intimate gallery space dedicated to showcasing significant artworks from the 20th and 21st century.

The gallery works with and represents mainly diasporic, immigrant artists, LGBTQ-identified artists, and artists of color based in Chicago and in other parts of the country. We work tirelessly for the success of our artists to help their art practice thrive. The artwork on view at the gallery engages viewers to think, act, and to consider the work for their collections. Acquiring artwork produced by the artists represented at FLXST Contemporary supports and nourishes their creativity and continued artistic practice. We represent artists who are often underrepresented in the art world, even though they continue to work tirelessly to gain a foothold within it. We believe in their abilities to transform the art world to be more inclusive and forward-thinking.

Much of her work focuses on cityscapes: local, regional and international. She has Master Pastelist distinction from Pastel Society of America, Chicago Pastel Painters, and the International Association of Pastel Societies, who also named her one of their few Eminent Pastelists. Her work takes her around the world to paint on-site and to teach. Many of her workshops are currently on Zoom. The gallery also offers her work in print, along with an unlimited selection of cards of her paintings, as well as her signature pastel products for students. CHARLESTON

The Tarble Arts Center is the teaching museum on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. Artist-led and artist-run, the Tarble presents an annual program of rotating exhibitions that provide experiential encounters with art of international significance and local relevance. An onsite Education Lab, Design Lab, and Collections + Exhibitions Lab are hubs for interdisciplinary activity, positioning art as a primary tool for research, advancing knowledge, and interpreting the world we live in. The outcomes of this experimentation produce projects, publications, and opportunities that reach EIU students, community members, regional partners, and international collaborators both in the museum and wherever they are. The Tarble’s ongoing stewardship of a permanent collection of contemporary art, American Regionalism, and folk art provides opportunities for study and reflection to students of all ages. A division of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at Eastern Illinois University, the Tarble has received generous support from Newton E. Tarble and the Tarble Family Foundation, along with member support, annuitants, patrons, and EIU alumni. Since its opening in 1982, the museum has undergone two expansions to reflect its growth and dedication to the visual arts and arts education, receiving museum accreditation with the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) in 2000.

LILY PAD GALLERY WEST

Wisconsin: MILWAUKEE

Lily Pad Gallery West provides the finest quality realism, naturalism, impressionism, and abstract works of art. With over 300 works of art from 70 distinct artists, the gallery brings quality art from modern contemporary to art reminiscent of 19th century French and Dutch Masters. Owners Alan Perlstein and Terry Hamann decided to open Lily Pad Gallery West in Milwaukee in early 2015. Longtime appreciators of art, they started as collectors 40 years ago, with limited funds but a passion for art. Perlstein and Hamann’s friend and partner, Wivi-Anne Weber, had a great gallery in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, called Lily Pad Gallery, which the couple had supported for over 20 years as collectors. They decided they’d love to open a sister gallery in Milwaukee, which is how Lily Pad Gallery West came to be. Four times a year, the third weekend in January, April, July, and October, the city of Milwaukee hosts a city-wide gallery hop event called Gallery Night MKE. Lily Pad West participates in these events with an artist in residence for the weekend, a temporary showcase exhibition, and new work from many of our 70 distinct artists.

CHICAGO SCULPTURE EXHIBIT (CSE)

• GROUPS/ASSOC.

Looking for a safe, distanced art experience? The Chicago Sculpture Exhibit offers a richly rewarding experience, inherently appropriate to meet these times. Every facet of our lives has been affected this year. This includes the current Chicago Sculpture Exhibit, which saw a four-month delay in installing sculptures this year. Founded in 2001, CSE was first imagined to enhance and enrich the neighborhood by publicly exhibiting works of local sculptors. Over the past 19 years, the program has grown from eight sculptures to more than 50 sculptures in 2020. Today, artists from around the country participate in this annual effort to bring art to people in their everyday life. Midwestern artists are joined by artists from around the country to present large-scale sculptures perfect for viewing from any distance that feels appropriate. The artists represented have long histories of creating stunning, thoughtful and/or whimsical sculptures. All the sculptures in the CSE exhibit are located outdoors, where they are on temporary display for one year. The Chicago Sculpture Exhibit is happy to provide information to anyone interested in learning more about the artists, a particular sculpture in the Exhibit, or purchasing a sculpture. Many of the artists also work in other media and can scale to size if current sculptures are too large for personal consideration. The Chicago Sculpture Exhibit, an Illinois not-for-profit corporation, is funded by charitable contributions from both the private and public sectors. Whether you make a plan to visit all 54 sculptures or simply find yourself in front of one while venturing outdoors, we hope you enjoy this opportunity to embrace art on your own terms. Visit ChicagoScultpureExhibit.org or find us on Facebook, Instagram & Twitter. ADMISSION IS FREE.
